The rotational lightcurves of the Pluto-Charon system were previously believed to be solely attributed to their surfaces. However, a proposed scenario of haze cooling \citep{2017Natur.551..352Z} suggests that the atmospheric haze of Pluto could significantly contribute to mid-infrared emission, which calls for a revisit of previous analyses. In this study, we employ a Bayesian retrieval approach to constrain the haze emission from the rotational lightcurves of the Pluto-Charon system. The lightcurves were observed by the Spitzer and Herschel telescopes at 24 and 70 $\mu$m, and were combined with the latest surface albedo maps of Pluto and Charon from the New Horizons spacecraft. Our results show that including the haze emission is consistent with all current observations, with the best-fit haze flux around 1.63 mJy. This is in agreement with the composition of Titan-like tholins. However, the ``surface only" scenario, which excludes the haze contribution, can still explain the observations. We conclude that the current data at 24 $\mu$m cannot constrain Pluto's haze emission due to the degeneracy with Charon's surface emission. Regardless, some surface properties of Pluto are well constrained by the shape of the lightcurves, with a thermal inertia of approximately 8--10 MKS and a relatively low CH$_4$ emissivity of 0.3--0.5. We suggest that observations by the JWST telescope at 18 $\mu$m, which can resolve Pluto from Charon, could directly probe the haze emission of Pluto due to the low surface emission at that wavelength., Comment: Accepted by ApJ

At least two active plumes were observed on Neptune's moon Triton during the Voyager 2 flyby in 1989. Models for Triton's plumes have previously been grouped into five hypotheses, two of which are primarily atmospheric phenomena and are generally considered unlikely, and three of which include eruptive processes and are plausible. These hypotheses are compared, including new arguments, such as comparisons based on current understanding of Mars, Enceladus, and Pluto. An eruption model based on a solar-powered, solid-state greenhouse effect was previously considered the leading hypothesis for Triton's plumes, in part due to the proximity of the plumes to the subsolar latitude during the Voyager 2 flyby and the distribution of Triton's fans that are putatively deposits from former plumes. The other two eruption hypotheses are powered by internal heat, not solar insolation. Based on new analyses of the ostensible relation between the latitude of the subsolar point on Triton and the geographic locations of the plumes and fans, we argue that neither the locations of the plumes nor fans are strong evidence in favor of the solar-powered hypothesis. We conclude that all three eruption hypotheses should be considered further. Five tests are presented that could be implemented with remote sensing observations from future spacecraft to confidently distinguish among the eruption hypotheses for Triton's plumes. The five tests are based on the: (1) composition and thickness of Triton's southern hemisphere terrains, (2) composition of fan deposits, (3) distribution of active plumes, (4) distribution of fans, and (5) surface temperature at the locations of plumes and/or fans. The tests are independent, but complementary, and implementable with a single flyby mission such as the Trident mission concept. One of the most striking and curious features of the small Kuiper Belt Object (KB), Arrokoth, explored by New Horizons, is the bright, annular neck it exhibits at the junction between its two lobes. Here we summarize past reported findings regarding the properties of this feature and report new findings regarding its dimensions, reflectivity and color, shape profile, and its lack of identifiable craters. We conclude by enumerating possible origin scenarios for this unusual feature. New results include a new measurement of the observed neck area of 8+/-1.5 km2, a total neck surface area of 32 km2, a 12.5:1 ratio of neck circumference to height, a normal reflectance histogram of the observed neck, and the fact that no significant (i.e., >2 sigma) color units were identified, meaning the neck's color is generally spatially uniform at the 1.5 km/pixel scale of the best color images. From orbit, the visibility of Titan's surface is limited to a handful of narrow spectral windows in the near-infrared (near-IR), primarily from the absorption of methane gas. This has limited the ability to identify specific compounds on the surface -- to date Titan's bulk surface composition remains unknown. Further, understanding of the surface composition would provide insight into geologic processes, photochemical production and evolution, and the biological potential of Titan's surface. One approach to obtain wider spectral coverage with which to study Titan's surface is by decreasing the integrated column of absorbers (primarily methane) and scatterers between the observer and the surface. This is only possible if future missions operate at lower altitudes in Titan's atmosphere. Herein, we use a radiative transfer model to measure in detail the absorption through Titan's atmosphere from different mission altitudes, and consider the impacts this would have for interpreting reflectance measurements of Titan's surface. Over our modeled spectral range of 0.4 - 10 micron, we find that increases in the width of the transmission windows as large as 317% can be obtained for missions performing remote observations at the surface. However, any appreciable widening of the windows requires onboard illumination. Further, we make note of possible surface compounds that are not currently observable from orbit, but could be identified using the wider windows at low altitudes. These range from simple nitriles such as cyanoacetylene, to building blocks of amino acids such as urea. We outline a flagship-class mission concept focused on studying Titan as a global system, with particular emphasis on the polar regions. Investigating Titan from the unique standpoint of a polar orbit would enable comprehensive global maps to uncover the physics and chemistry of the atmosphere, and the topography and geophysical environment of the surface and subsurface. The mission includes two key elements: (1) an orbiter spacecraft, which also acts as a data relay, and (2) one or more small probes to directly investigate Titan's seas and make the first direct measurements of their liquid composition and physical environment. The orbiter would carry a sophisticated remote sensing payload, including a novel topographic lidar, a long-wavelength surface-penetrating radar, a sub-millimeter sounder for winds and for mesospheric/thermospheric composition, and a camera and near-infrared spectrometer. An instrument suite to analyze particles and fields would include a mass spectrometer to focus on the interactions between Titan's escaping upper atmosphere and the solar wind and Saturnian magnetosphere. The orbiter would enter a stable polar orbit around 1500 to 1800 km, from which vantage point it would make global maps of the atmosphere and surface. One or more probes, released from the orbiter, would investigate Titan's seas in situ, including possible differences in composition between higher and lower latitude seas, as well as the atmosphere during the parachute descent. The number of probes, as well as the instrument complement on the orbiter and probe, remain to be finalized during a mission study that we recommend to NASA as part of the NRC Decadal Survey for Planetary Science now underway, with the goal of an overall mission cost in the "small flagship" category of ~$2 bn. On January 1st 2019, the New Horizons spacecraft flew by the classical Kuiper belt object (486958) Arrokoth (provisionally designated 2014 MU69), possibly the most primitive object ever explored by a spacecraft. The I/F of Arrokoth is analyzed and fit with a photometric function that is a linear combination of the Lommel-Seeliger (lunar) and Lambert photometric functions. Arrokoth has a geometric albedo of p_V = 0.21_(-0.04)^(+0.05) at a wavelength of 550 nm and ~0.24 at 610 nm. Arrokoth's geometric albedo is greater than the median but consistent with a distribution of cold classical Kuiper belt objects whose geometric albedos were determined by fitting a thermal model to radiometric observations. Thus, Arrokoth's geometric albedo adds to the orbital and spectral evidence that it is a cold classical Kuiper belt object. Maps of the normal reflectance and hemispherical albedo of Arrokoth are presented. The normal reflectance of Arrokoth's surface varies with location, ranging from ~0.10-0.40 at 610 nm with an approximately Gaussian distribution. Both Arrokoth's extrema dark and extrema bright surfaces are correlated to topographic depressions. Arrokoth has a bilobate shape and the two lobes have similar normal reflectance distributions: both are approximately Gaussian, peak at ~0.25 at 610 nm, and range from ~0.10-0.40, which is consistent with co-formation and co-evolution of the two lobes. The hemispherical albedo of Arrokoth varies substantially with both incidence angle and location, the average hemispherical albedo at 610 nm is 0.063 +/- 0.015. Kuiper belt object (KBO) Eris is exceptionally bright with a greater visible geometric albedo than any other known KBO. Its infrared reflectance spectrum is dominated by methane, which should form tholins that darken the surface on timescales much shorter than the age of the Solar System. Thus one or more ongoing processes probably maintain its brightness. Eris is predicted to have a primarily nitrogen atmosphere that is in vapor pressure equilibrium with nitrogen-ice and is collisional (not ballistic). Eris's eccentric orbit is expected to result in two atmospheric regimes: (1) a period near perihelion when the atmosphere is global (analogous to the atmospheres of Mars, Triton, and Pluto) and (2) a period near aphelion when only a local atmosphere exists near the warmest region (analogous to the atmosphere of Io). A numerical model developed to simulate Eris's thermal and volatile evolution in the local atmosphere regime is presented. The model conserves energy, mass, and momentum while maintaining vapor pressure equilibrium. It is adaptable to other local, collisional, sublimation atmospheres, which in addition to Io and Eris, may occur on several volatile-bearing KBOs. The model was applied for a limiting case where Eris is fixed at aphelion and has an initial nitrogen-ice mass everywhere equal to the precipitable column of nitrogen in Pluto's atmosphere during the New Horizons encounter (the resultant mass if the Pluto atmosphere collapsed uniformly onto the surface). The model results indicate that (1) transport of nitrogen in the local, collisional, sublimation atmosphere regime is significant, (2) changes of Eris's albedo or color from nitrogen transport may be observable, and (3) uniform collapse of a global, nitrogen atmosphere likely cannot explain Eris's anomalous albedo in the present epoch. Saturn's moon Enceladus offers a unique opportunity in the search for life and habitable environments beyond Earth, a key theme of the National Research Council's 2013-2022 Decadal Survey. A plume of water vapor and ice spews from Enceladus's south polar region. Cassini data suggest that this plume, sourced by a liquid reservoir beneath the moon's icy crust, contain organics, salts, and water-rock interaction derivatives. Thus, the ingredients for life as we know it-- liquid water, chemistry, and energy sources-- are available in Enceladus's subsurface ocean. We have only to sample the plumes to investigate this hidden ocean environment. We present a New Frontiers class, solar-powered Enceladus orbiter that would take advantage of this opportunity, Testing the Habitability of Enceladus's Ocean (THEO). Developed by the 2015 Jet Propulsion Laboratory Planetary Science Summer School student participants under the guidance of TeamX, this mission concept includes remote sensing and in situ analyses with a mass spectrometer, a sub-mm radiometer-spectrometer, a camera, and two magnetometers. These instruments were selected to address four key questions for ascertaining the habitability of Enceladus's ocean within the context of the moon's geological activity: (1) How are the plumes and ocean connected? (2) Are the abiotic conditions of the ocean suitable for habitability? (3) How stable is the ocean environment? (4) Is there evidence of biological processes? By taking advantage of the opportunity Enceladus's plumes offer, THEO represents a viable, solar-powered option for exploring a potentially habitable ocean world of the outer solar system., Comment: JPL Summer School 2015

Ethane is expected to be the dominant photochemical product on Titan's surface and, in the absence of a process that sequesters it from exposed surface reservoirs, a major constituent of its lakes and seas. Absorption of Cassini's 2.2 cm radar by Ligeia Mare however suggests that this north polar sea is dominated by methane. In order to explain this apparent ethane deficiency, we explore the possibility that Ligeia Mare is the visible part of an alkanofer that interacted with an underlying clathrate layer and investigate the influence of this interaction on an assumed initial ethane-methane mixture in the liquid phase. We find that progressive liquid entrapment in clathrate allows the surface liquid reservoir to become methane-dominated for any initial ethane mole fraction below 0.75. If interactions between alkanofers and clathrates are common on Titan, this should lead to the emergence of many methane-dominated seas or lakes., Comment: Accepted for publication in Icarus
