Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (2D TMDs) have been demonstrated as one of the most outstanding materials not only for fundamental science but also for a wide range of photonic applications. However, an efficient way to control their excitonic properties is still needed for advanced applications with superior device performance. Here, we show that the exciton lifetime of WSe2 monolayer can be prolonged using metamaterials. We observe a ∼100% reduction in the electron-hole recombination rate of WSe2 monolayer placed on a hyperbolic metamaterial substrate and demonstrate that such a remarkable change results from the destructive image dipole interaction with the in-plane exciton transition dipole. Furthermore, this substantial increase in exciton lifetime leads to order-of-magnitude (10-fold) enhancement of photocurrent in the 2D WSe2-based hybrid photodetector with metamaterials. Tailoring the optical transition properties of 2D TMD materials with specially designed metamaterials, demonstrated here, will pave the way for developing 2D material-based optoelectronics.

Higher-order optical harmonics entered the realm of nanostructured solids being observed recently in optical gratings and metasurfaces with a subwavelength thickness. Structuring materials at the subwavelength scale allows us toresonantly enhance the efficiency of nonlinear processes and reduce the size of high-harmonic sources. We report the observation of up to a seventh harmonic generated from a single subwavelength resonator made of AlGaAs material. This process is enabled by careful engineering of the resonator geometry for supporting an optical mode associated with a quasi-bound state in the continuum in the mid-infrared spectral range at around λ = 3.7 μm pump wavelength. The resonator volume measures ~0.1 λ 3 . The resonant modes are excited with an azimuthally polarized tightly focused beam. We evaluate the contributions of perturbative and nonperturbative nonlinearities to the harmonic generation process. Our work proves the possibility to miniaturize solid-state sources of high harmonics to the subwavelength volumes.

We propose an efficient alignment method for liquid crystals (LCs). A brush-coating method handles film deposition and LC alignment treatment simultaneously herein, meaning a reduction in the conventional alignment layer treatment process steps. A lanthanum yttrium strontium oxide (LaYSrO) film prepared by the sol–gel process was used for the alignment layer. Topographical details of the brush-coated LaYSrO films (compared with spin-coated films) were investigated by atomic force microscopy. Spin-coated LaYSrO meant that the film formation alone without orientation treatment represented an isotropic surface. On the other hand, the 270 °C-cured brush-coated LaYSrO showed nano/microstructure with directionality. It indicates that brush-hair sweeping induced shearing stress on the sol state of the LaYSrO, which results in surface anisotropy for LC alignment. The uniform LC alignment state was confirmed by polarized optical microscopy and pretilt analysis. The brush-coated LaYSrO shows fine optical transparency compared to plain and indium-tin-oxide coated glasses, and thermal stability up to 150 °C for LC alignment. Competitive electro-optical performances of the brush-coated LaYSrO were verified in a twisted-nematic LC system compared to those of the conventionally used polyimide layer. Consequently, we expect that the brush-coating process can be an innovative technology for LC alignment.

Historically, nanophotonics deals with a control of light at the nanoscale being closely connected with the rapid advances in plasmonics – the physics of surface plasmon polaritons supported by metal–dielectric interfaces. Properly engineered nanostructures allow the subwavelength propagation of light and its strong confinement in nanowaveguides and nanocavities, making possible the field enhancement and lasing. Spaser was suggested as a special type of nanolaser with a very small footprint that can be modulated quickly thus becoming a good candidate for on-chip optical data processing. However, recent developments in the physics of high-index dielectric nanoparticles and resonant dielectric metasurfaces allowed to advance the field of nanophotonics and introduce novel nonplasmonic nanostructures and nanolasers empowered by topology and interference effects. Here we present first some examples of experimentally realized spasers, and then discuss the recent developments in the cutting-edge high-index dielectric nanostructures employed for nonplasmonic nanolasers based on Mie resonances, anapole states, bound states in the continuum, and the physics of topological phases.

We study active dielectric metasurfaces composed of two-dimensional arrays of split-nanodisk resonators fabricated in InGaAsP membranes with embedded quantum wells. Depending on the geometric parameters, such split-nanodisk resonators can operate in the optical anapole regime originating from an overlap of the electric dipole and toroidal dipole Mie-resonant optical modes, thus supporting strongly localized fields and high-Q resonances. We demonstrate room-temperature lasing from the anapole lattices of engineered active metasurfaces with low threshold and high coherence.

Wavelength-scale lasers provide promising applications through low power consumption requiring for optical cavities with increased quality factors. Cavity radiative losses can be suppressed strongly in the regime of optical bound states in the continuum; however, a finite size of the resonator limits the performance of bound states in the continuum as cavity modes for active nanophotonic devices. Here, we employ the concept of a supercavity mode created by merging symmetry-protected and accidental bound states in the continuum in the momentum space, and realize an efficient laser based on a finite-size cavity with a small footprint. We trace the evolution of lasing properties before and after the merging point by varying the lattice spacing, and we reveal this laser demonstrates the significantly reduced threshold, substantially increased quality factor, and shrunken far-field images. Our results provide a route for nanolasers with reduced out-of-plane losses in finite-size active nanodevices and improved lasing characteristics., Though laser action has been reported for optical bound states in the continuum (BIC) cavities with high quality factors, these BIC lasers lacked practical applicability. Here, the authors report an ultralow-threshold super-BIC laser featuring merged symmetry-protected and accidental BICs.

The development of a multifunctional device that achieves optogenetic neuromodulation and extracellular neural mapping is crucial for understanding neural circuits and treating brain disorders. Although various devices have been explored for this purpose, it is challenging to develop biocompatible optogenetic devices that can seamlessly interface with the brain. Herein, we present a tissue-like optoelectronic mesh with a compact interface that enables not only high spatial and temporal resolutions of optical stimulation but also the sampling of optically evoked neural activities. An in vitro experiment in hydrogel showed efficient light propagation through a freestanding SU-8 waveguide that was integrated with flexible mesh electronics. Additionally, an in vivo implantation of the tissue-like optoelectronic mesh in the brain of a live transgenic mouse enabled the sampling of optically evoked neural signals. Therefore, this multifunctional device can aid the chronic modulation of neural circuits and behavior studies for developing biological and therapeutic applications.

Single-photon emitters, the basic building blocks of quantum communication and information, have been developed using atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs). Although the bandgap of TMDCs was spatially engineered in artificially created defects for single-photon emitters, it remains a challenge to precisely align the emitter's dipole moment to optical cavities for the Purcell enhancement. Here, we demonstrate position- and polarization-controlled single-photon emitters in monolayer WSe2. A tensile strain of ∼0.2% was applied to monolayer WSe2 by placing it onto a dielectric rod structure with a nanosized gap. Excitons were localized in the nanogap sites, resulting in the generation of linearly polarized single-photon emission with a g(2) of ∼0.1 at 4 K. Additionally, we measured the abrupt change in polarization of single photons with respect to the nanogap size. Our robust spatial and polarization control of emission provides an efficient way to demonstrate deterministic and scalable single-photon sources by integrating with nanocavities.

High quality factor and small mode volume in nanocavities enable the demonstration of efficient nanophotonic devices with low power consumption, strong nonlinearity, and high modulation speed, due to the strong light-matter interaction. In this review, we focus on recent state-of-the-art nanocavities and their applications. We introduce single nanocavities including semiconductor nanowires, plasmonic cavities, and nanostructures based on quasi-bound states in the continuum (quasi-BIC), for laser, photovoltaic, and nonlinear applications. In addition, nanocavity arrays with unique feedback mechanisms, including BIC cavities, parity-time symmetry coupled cavities, and photonic topological cavities, are introduced for laser applications. These various cavity designs and underlying physics in single and array nanocavities are useful for the practical implementation of promising nanophotonic devices.

Electrophysiological recording technologies can provide critical insight into the function of the nervous system and other biological tissues. Standard silicon-based probes have limitations, including single-sided recording sites and intrinsic instabilities due to the probe stiffness. Here, we demonstrate high-performance neural recording using double-sided three-dimensional (3D) electrodes integrated in an ultraflexible bioinspired open mesh structure, allowing electrodes to sample fully the 3D interconnected tissue of the brain.

Multiphoton processes of absorption photoluminescence have enabled a wide range of applications including three-dimensional microfabrication, data storage, and biological imaging. While the applications of two-photon and three-photon absorption and luminescence have matured considerably, higher-order photoluminescence processes remain more challenging to study due to their lower efficiency, particularly in subwavelength systems. Here we report the observation of it five-photon luminescence from a single subwavelength nanoantenna at room temperature enabled by the Mie resonances. We excite an AlGaAs resonator at around 3.6 um and observe photoluminescence at around 740 nm. We show that the interplay of the Mie multipolar modes at the subwavelength scale can enhance the efficiency of the five-photon luminescence by at least four orders of magnitude, being limited only by sensitivity of our detector. We study multiphoton photoluminescence from several types of nonlinear resonant metaphotonic structures. We develop a general theoretical approach to describe such nonlinear effects and confirm our predictions in experiments with perovskite metasurfaces and AlGaAs nanoantennas.

We design and fabricate individual subwavelength AlGaAs nanoantennas supporting Mie resonances in the mid-infrared spectral range. Near the resonant modes, we observe five-photon upconversion photoluminescence in the visible spectral range.

We demonstrate vortex and anti-vortex nanolasers with the unity orbital angular momentum based on topological disclination states. The lasing modes with unique topological features are identified by measuring both polarization states and interference patterns.

Recent advances in technology and physics offer new possibilities for efficient control of nanolasers, to enable faster information processing at lower powers.

Photolithography is the prevalent microfabrication technology. It needs to meet resolution and yield demands at a cost that makes it economically viable. However, conventional far-field photolithography has reached the diffraction limit, which imposes complex optics and short-wavelength beam source to achieve high resolution at the expense of cost efficiency. Here, we present a cost-effective near-field optical printing approach that uses metal patterns embedded in a flexible elastomer photomask with mechanical robustness. This technique generates sub-diffraction patterns that are smaller than 1/10th of the wavelength of the incoming light. It can be integrated into existing hardware and standard mercury lamp, and used for a variety of surfaces, such as curved, rough and defect surfaces. This method offers a higher resolution than common light-based printing systems, while enabling parallel-writing. Bound states in the continuum (BICs) represent localized modes with energies embedded in the continuous spectrum of radiating waves. BICs were discovered initially as a mathematical curiosity in quantum mechanics, and more recently were employed in photonics. Pure mathematical bound states have infinitely-large quality factors (Q factors) and zero resonant linewidth. In optics, BICs are physically limited by a finite size, material absorption, structural disorder, and surface scattering, and they manifest themselves as the resonant states with large Q factors, also known as supercavity modes or quasi-BICs. Optical BIC resonances have been demonstrated only in extended 2D and 1D systems and have been employed for distinct applications including lasing and sensing. Optical quasi-BIC modes in individual nanoresonators have been discovered recently but they were never observed in experiment. Here, we demonstrate experimentally an isolated subwavelength nanoresonator hosting a quasi-BIC resonance. We fabricate the resonator from AlGaAs material on an engineered substrate, and couple to the quasi-BIC mode using structured light. We employ the resonator as a nonlinear nanoantenna and demonstrate record-high efficiency of second-harmonic generation. Our study brings a novel platform to resonant subwavelength photonics.

Two-dimensional transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD) crystals are a versatile platform for optoelectronic, catalytic and quantum device studies. However, the ability to tailor their physical properties through explicit synthetic control of their morphology and dimensionality is a major challenge. Here we demonstrate a gas-phase synthesis method that substantially transforms the structure and dimensionality of TMD crystals without lithography. Synthesis of MoS2 on Si(001) surfaces pre-treated with phosphine yields high-aspect-ratio nanoribbons of uniform width. We systematically control the width of these nanoribbons between 50 and 430 nm by varying the total phosphine dosage during the surface treatment step. Aberration-corrected electron microscopy reveals that the nanoribbons are predominantly 2H phase with zig-zag edges and an edge quality that is comparable to, or better than, that of graphene and TMD nanoribbons prepared through conventional top-down processing. Owing to their restricted dimensionality, the nominally one-dimensional MoS2 nanocrystals exhibit photoluminescence 50 meV higher in energy than that from two-dimensional MoS2 crystals. Moreover, this emission is precisely tunable through synthetic control of crystal width. Directed crystal growth on designer substrates has the potential to enable the preparation of low-dimensional materials with prescribed morphologies and tunable or emergent optoelectronic properties. Synthesis of MoS2 on a silicon surface pre-treated with phosphine enables the growth of one-dimensional MoS2 nanocrystals with tunable dimensions and optical properties.

It is well known that the physical and electro-optical properties of liquid crystals can be controlled by doping with nanoparticles. In this study, we investigated the electro-optical properties of homogeneous aligned liquid crystal devices doped with various titanate nanoparticles, such as TiSiO₄, BaTiO₃, SrTiO₃ and mixtures of BaTiO₃ and SrTiO₃. Doping liquid crystals with titanate nanoparticles decreased the threshold voltages of the liquid crystal mixture cells. In particular, the liquid crystal cells doped with SrTiO₃ nanoparticles exhibited the lowest switching amplitude of 0.643 V. The high performance of the liquid crystal cells doped with various titanate nanoparticles indicates that the proposed liquid crystal devices have strong potential for use in materials for advanced liquid crystal displays.

We investigated a photon-triggered nanowire transistor with near-infrared spectral photoresponse. To understand the mechanism of operation of the nanowire transistor consisting of crystalline Si and porous Si segments, we performed a qualitative analysis of trapped carriers in the porous Si and modeling of a transistor operated by photon gating. We then fabricated a photon-triggered transistor device with a nanowire diameter of 200 nm and a porous Si length of 400 nm. Systematic measurements and analyses demonstrate that the wavelength dependence of the photon-triggered current generation is caused by a broad range of energy levels for the localized trap states of the porous Si segment. We believe that these results pave the way for simplification of the fabrication and operation of ultracompact nanoprocessors and development of efficient nanoscale photodetectors for high-resolution imaging.
