Nest failure for coastal marsh bird species is primarily caused by predation and nest flooding. As sea level rise makes nest flooding more likely, the threat of nest predation will constrain the potential adaptive responses of marsh nesting species. Thus, understanding the predictors of nest predation is important for the conservation of salt marsh-dwelling bird species, such as the Seaside Sparrow (Ammospiza maritima). Predator activity may be influenced by landscape features (particularly habitat edges), potentially making nest predation predictable. We aimed to understand the predictability of Seaside Sparrow nest predation relative to two major landscape features: roads and tidal rivers, as both of these edges may be entryways or attractants for predators in marshes. In coastal Georgia, USA, we assessed mammalian predator activity relative to the two features of interest, and hypothesized that mammalian predator activity would be greater close to roads and tidal rivers. We also recorded Seaside Sparrow nest locations and nest predation events and hypothesized that nest predation events would increase with increasing predator activity. Consistent with our first hypothesis, mammalian predator activity increased close to roads and tidal rivers, but mammalian predator distribution did not explain the spatial variation in Seaside Sparrow nest predation thus not supporting our second hypothesis. Seaside Sparrows also placed their nests in locations with high mammalian predator activity, indicating that the ability to avoid nesting in high-risk areas may be constrained by habitat or resource limitations. Additionally, mammals may not be the primary nest predators, as we found that one bird species--Marsh Wren (Cistothorus palustris)--contributed substantially to nest predation rates. Understanding the predictability of mammalian predator distribution can allow for focused predator management efforts, such as exclusion, to habitat edges where we found the highest mammalian predator activity, which could relax the constraint of nest predation on Seaside Sparrow's ability to respond to the intensifying threat of sea level rise. Agent-based models can be used to better understand the impacts of lifting restrictions or implementing interventions during a pandemic. However, agent-based models are computationally expensive, and running a model of a large population can result in a simulation taking too long to run for the model to be a useful analysis tool during a public health crisis. To reduce computing time and power while running a detailed agent-based model for the spread of COVID-19 in the Republic of Ireland, we introduce a scaling factor that equates 1 agent to 100 people in the population. We present the results from model validation and show that the scaling factor increases the variability in the model output, but the average model results are similar in scaled and un-scaled models of the same population, and the scaled model is able to accurately simulate the number of cases per day in Ireland during the autumn of 2020. We then test the usability of the model by using the model to explore the likely impacts of increasing community mixing when schools reopen after summer holidays. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Seventeenth-century readers were fascinated by marvellous tales of people known as the noctambuli who rose up in their sleep, performed daily chores and attempted dangerous feats, such as clambering onto rooftops. On account of their uncanny nature, commentators noted that sleepers could be mistaken for spectres or those who had been bewitched. Depictions of the noctamubli were also influenced by the Malleus Maleficarum, which had argued that they were acting under the influence of demons and would fall if their Christian name was called. Medical texts explained this behaviour in terms of the escape of hot vapours within the body, the powers of the imaginative faculty, and the impairment of common sense during sleep. While this explanation was widely accepted, in the 1650s it was challenged by alternative views from esoteric writings, which conceptualised the movements of sleepers in terms of mystical powers within the body. Long‐term datasets are required to understand the response of long‐lived organisms (e.g., gopher tortoises [Gopherus polyphemus]) to management actions, such as prescribed burns. Our objective was to estimate the effects of prescribed burning on gopher tortoise population dynamics over decadal time frames at Fort Stewart Army Reserve, southeastern Georgia, USA. We captured and marked adult tortoises from 1994–2020. In addition, since the early 1990s, managers at Fort Stewart collected spatial records of prescribed burns; thus, we could compare demography of the population to prescribed burning. We used a Bayesian hierarchical model (open population Jolly‐Seber model) to estimate population parameters (emigration and survival, immigration and recruitment, and adult abundance) and their relationships with years since burn. We observed opposing responses to years since burn at 2 sites: abundance and the probability of staying (survival plus not emigrating) increased within 1 site when it had been more recently burned (F zones), but abundance and probability of staying in a second site increased when it had been longer since the site was burned (E zones). Some of these effects were weak but indicative of different responses to burning between the sites. Although the sites experienced similar burning regimes, they differed substantially in other habitat features: the F zones had almost twice the tree cover and lower soil sand composition, indicating that tortoise population responses to burning depend on habitat context. We inferred that the primary mechanism for demographic responses to years since burn was likely emigrating adults, which indicates the need for more detailed movement data. Our results demonstrate that gopher tortoise population responses to prescribed burning are complex, context dependent, and primarily influenced by tortoise movements. Therefore, prescribed burn plans may best accommodate spatially dynamic tortoise populations when they create spatial heterogeneity in burn ages within the range of typical tortoise movements. © 2021 The Wildlife Society. Background: In order to be prepared for an infectious disease outbreak it is important to know what interventions will or will not have an impact on reducing the outbreak. While some interventions might have a greater effect in mitigating an outbreak, others might only have a minor effect but all interventions will have a cost in implementation. Estimating the effectiveness of an intervention can be done using computational modelling. In particular, comparing the results of model runs with an intervention in place to control runs where no interventions were used can help to determine what interventions will have the greatest effect on an outbreak.Methods: To test the effects of a school closure policy on the spread of an infectious disease (in this case measles) we run simulations closing schools based on either the proximity of the town to the initial outbreak or the centrality of the town within the network of towns in the simulation. To do this we use a hybrid model that combines an agent-based model with an equation-based model. In our analysis, we use three measures to compare the effects of different intervention strategies: the total number of model runs leading to an outbreak, the total number of infected agents, and the geographic spread of outbreaks.Results: Our results show that closing down the schools in the town where an outbreak begins and the town with the highest in degree centrality provides the largest reduction in percent of runs leading to an outbreak as well as a reduction in the geographic spread of the outbreak compared to only closing down the town where the outbreak begins. Although closing down schools in the town with the closest proximity to the town where the outbreak begins also provides a reduction in the chance of an outbreak, we do not find the reduction to be as large as when the schools in the high in degree centrality town are closed.Conclusions: Thus we believe that focusing on high in degree centrality towns during an outbreak is important in reducing the overall size of an outbreak. Background: Early recognition and diagnosis of allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) is critical to improve patient symptoms, and antifungal therapy may prevent or delay progression of bronchiectasis and development of chronic pulmonary aspergillosis. Objective: A recently commercialized lateral flow assay (Aspergillus ICT) (LDBio Diagnostics, Lyons, France) detects Aspergillus-specific antibodies in <30 minutes, requiring minimal laboratory equipment. We evaluated this assay for diagnosis of ABPA compared to diseased (asthma and/or bronchiectasis) controls. Methods: ABPA and control sera collected at the National Aspergillosis Centre (Manchester, UK) and/or from the Manchester Allergy, Respiratory and Thoracic Surgery research biobank were evaluated using the Aspergillus ICT assay. Results were read both visually and digitally (using a lateral flow reader). Serological Aspergillus-specific IgG and IgE, and total IgE titres were measured by ImmunoCAP. Results: For 106 cases of ABPA versus all diseased controls, sensitivity and specificity for the Aspergillus ICT were 90.6% and 87.2%, respectively. Sensitivity for 'proven' ABPA alone (n = 96) was 89.8%, and 94.4% for 'presumed' ABPA (n = 18). 'Asthma only' controls (no bronchiectasis) and 'bronchiectasis controls' exhibited 91.4% and 81.7% specificity, respectively. Comparison of Aspergillus ICT result with Aspergillus-specific IgG and IgE titres showed no evident immunoglobulin isotype bias. Digital measurements displayed no correlation between ImmunoCAP Aspergillus-specific IgE level and ICT test line intensity. Conclusions: The Aspergillus ICT assay exhibits good sensitivity for ABPA serological screening. It is easy to perform and interpret, using minimal equipment and resources; and provides a valuable simple screening resource to rapidly distinguish more serious respiratory conditions from Aspergillus sensitization alone. Conservation translocation projects must carefully balance multiple, potentially competing objectives (e.g. population viability, retention of genetic diversity, delivery of key ecological services) against conflicting stakeholder values and severe time and cost constraints. Advanced decision support tools would facilitate identifying practical solutions.We examined how to achieve compromise across competing objectives in conservation translocations via an examination of giant tortoises in the Galapagos Islands with ancestry from the extinct Floreana Island species (Chelonoidis niger). Efforts have begun to populate Floreana Island with tortoises genetically similar to its historical inhabitants while balancing three potentially competing objectives – restoring ecosystem services (sustaining a high tortoise population size), maximizing genome representation of the extinct C. niger species and maintaining a genetically diverse population – under realistic cost constraints.We developed a novel approach to this conservation decision problem by coupling an individual‐based simulation model with generalized additive models and global optimization. We identified several incompatibilities among programme objectives, with quasi‐optimal single‐objective solutions (sets of management actions) differing substantially in programme duration, translocation age, incubation temperature (determinant of sex ratio) and the number of individuals directly translocated from the source population.Quasi‐optimal single‐objective solutions were able to produce outcomes (i.e. population size and measures of genetic diversity and C. niger genome representation) to within 75% of their highest simulated outcomes (e.g. highest population size achieved across all simulations) within a cost constraint of c. $2m USD, but these solutions resulted in severe declines (up to 74% reduction) in outcomes for non‐focal objectives. However, when all programme objectives were equally weighted to produce a multi‐objective solution, all objectives were met to within 90% of the highest achievable mean values across all cost constraints.Synthesis and applications. Multi‐objective conservation translocations are likely to encounter complex trade‐offs and conflicts among programme objectives. Here, we developed a novel combination of modelling approaches to identify optimal management strategies. We found that solutions that simultaneously addressed multiple, competing objectives performed better than single‐objective solutions. Agent-based models are a tool that can be used to better understand the dynamics of an infectious disease outbreak. An infectious disease outbreak is influenced by many factors including vaccination or immunity levels, population density, and the age structure of the population. We hypothesize that these factors along with interactions of factors and the actions of individuals would lead to outbreaks of different size and severity even in two towns that appear similar on paper. Thus, it is necessary to implement a model that is able to capture these interactions and the actions of individuals. Using openly available data we create a data-driven agent-based model to simulate the spread of an airborne infectious disease in an Irish town. Agent-based models have been known to produce results that include the emergence of patterns and behaviours that are not directly programmed into the model. Our model is tested by simulating an outbreak of measles that occurred in Schull, Ireland in 2012. We simulate the same outbreak in 33 different towns and look at the correlations between the model results and the town characteristics (population, area, vaccination rates, age structure) to determine if the results of the model are affected by interactions of those town characteristics and the decisions on the agents in the model. As expected our results show that the outbreaks are not strongly correlated with any of the main characteristics of the towns and thus the model is most likely capturing such interactions and the agent-based model is successful in capturing the differences in the outbreaks. Prairie dogs (Cynomys spp.) are important ecosystem engineers in North America's central grasslands, and are a key prey base for numerous predators. Prairie dogs have declined dramatically across their former range, prompting reintroduction efforts to restore their populations and ecosystem functions, but the success of these reintroductions is rarely monitored rigorously. Here, we reintroduced 2,400 Gunnison's prairie dogs (C. gunnisoni) over a period of 6 years to the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, in central New Mexico, U.S.A., a semi‐arid grassland ecosystem at the southern edge of their range. We evaluated the population dynamics of prairie dogs following their reintroduction, and their consequent effects on grassland vertebrates. We found postrelease survival of prairie dogs stabilized at levels typical for the species (ca. 50%) after approximately 1 month, while average annual recruitment was ca. 0.35 juveniles per female, well below what was required for a self‐sustaining, stable population. Extreme drought conditions during much of the study period may have contributed to low recruitment. However, recruitment increased steadily over time, indicating that the reintroduced colony may simply need more time to establish in this arid system. We also found well‐known associates of prairie dog colonies, such as American badgers (Taxidea taxus) and burrowing owls (Athene cunicularia), were significantly more common on the colonies than off. After 7 years, we have yet to meet our goal of establishing a self‐sustaining population of Gunnison's prairie dogs in this semi‐arid grassland. But despite the uncertainty and challenges, our work shows that reestablishing keystone species can promote ecosystem restoration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives Co-occurring chronic diseases are associated with functional limitations, particularly for the aging population ≥50 years old. Aging offenders (individual who are imprisoned) tend to have greater prevalence of chronic, mental health, and substance use disorders compared to non-imprisoned populations. Our primary aim was to determine patterns of co-occurring conditions associated with functional limitations among aging offenders. Materials and methods We included all male offenders from one correctional system who were ≥50 years old (n = 2270) and extracted diagnoses for chronic diseases, mental health, substance use disorders, and functional limitations from an electronic health record. We performed a principal factor analysis (PFA) to identify patterns and chi-square to determine if the multimorbid population (≥3 diagnoses) differed from peer groups in regard to functional limitations. Results Three patterns (chronic diseases, geriatric conditions, and mental health/substance use) emerged from PFA. Functional limitations were associated with the chronic disease pattern ( p  = .03) where the multimorbid group compared to non-multimorbid peers had 1.5 odds, 95% CI [1.0, 2.1], for having a physical impairment. The geriatric ( p  = .10) and mental health/substance use disorders ( p  = .07) patterns were not associated with having a functional limitation compared to the population without multiple diagnoses. Controlling for multimorbidity, functional limitations, and overlapping patterns, increasing age was the only significant factor ( p  = .02) associated with having a physical impairment. Conclusion The chronic disease pattern was consistent with investigations that included non-imprisoned populations. However, the geriatric pattern was not significant, which was unexpected. Environmental heterogeneity is increasingly being used to select conservation areas that will provide for future biodiversity under a variety of climate scenarios. This approach, termed conserving nature's stage (CNS), assumes environmental features respond to climate change more slowly than biological communities, but will CNS be effective if the stage were to change as rapidly as the climate? We tested the effectiveness of using CNS to select sites in salt marshes for conservation in coastal Georgia (U.S.A.), where environmental features will change rapidly as sea level rises. We calculated species diversity based on distributions of 7 bird species with a variety of niches in Georgia salt marshes. Environmental heterogeneity was assessed across six landscape gradients (e.g., elevation, salinity, and patch area). We used 2 approaches to select sites with high environmental heterogeneity: site complementarity (environmental diversity [ED]) and local environmental heterogeneity (environmental richness [ER]). Sites selected based on ER predicted present-day species diversity better than randomly selected sites (up to an 8.1% improvement), were resilient to areal loss from SLR (1.0% average areal loss by 2050 compared with 0.9% loss of randomly selected sites), and provided habitat to a threatened species (0.63 average occupancy compared with 0.6 average occupancy of randomly selected sites). Sites selected based on ED predicted species diversity no better or worse than random and were not resilient to SLR (2.9% average areal loss by 2050). Despite the discrepancy between the 2 approaches, CNS is a viable strategy for conservation site selection in salt marshes because the ER approach was successful. It has potential for application in other coastal areas where SLR will affect environmental features, but its performance may depend on the magnitude of geological changes caused by SLR. Our results indicate that conservation planners that had heretofore excluded low-lying coasts from CNS planning could include coastal ecosystems in regional conservation strategies. Purpose:Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is prevalent in Kentucky and comes with a high cost in care and quality of life for individuals and caregivers affected. Many people living with the condition of TBI have unmet needs. Research among people living with TBI in rural areas is limited. The purposes of this study were to (1) increase understanding of the lived experience of people with TBI and caregivers in rural regions of Kentucky across the continuum of their care and (2) provide their perspectives on barriers and facilitators of optimal function and well-being. Methods:A qualitative descriptive interview study was conducted by a multidisciplinary team. Content analysis was completed with data-derived coding and iterative modifications to analysis, coalescing codes into categories and themes. Results:Thirteen people with TBI and six caregivers participated in the interview. Categories that emerged in analysis included the experiences under each locus of care; themes included relationships, functional competence, and participation in meaningful activity. Conclusion:Relationships represented both barriers and facilitators of well-being. Major unmet needs persisted in terms of medical problems, support for caregivers, community linkages, and participation in meaningful activities. Recommendations are made regarding avenues for addressing unmet needs.Implications for RehabilitationPeople with TBI are living with chronic conditions and may need intensive rehabilitation after the injury and intermittent rehabilitation throughout life to develop and maintain functional competence.Rehabilitation providers need to understand the unique aspects of the rural home environment to which a patient will be discharged (e.g., mountainous terrain, lack of transportation, dimensions of home) and communicate with rural providers directly.Rehabilitation providers need additional focus on improving patient’s and caregiver’s abilities to advocate for themselves.Patients with TBI should be referred to vocational rehabilitation as soon as possible to make the transition to meaningful activity at home more of a possibility. Sea-level rise (SLR) threatens the nesting success of salt marsh breeding birds, Including Seaside Sparrows (Ammodramus maritimus), by Increasing the magnitude and frequency of extreme high tides that flood nests. However, the threat to nesting success from tidal flooding Is Intertwined with that of predation because the threats are connected through a trade-off along a nest height gradient. Therefore, to understand the risk to nesting success from SLR, It Is necessary to consider predation threats simultaneously. I used an Individual-based model of Seaside Sparrow nesting behavior, calibrated using empirical data on nest success rates and nest-site selection behaviors, to project the effects of SLR conditions on the relative Importance of predation and flooding threats In affecting nesting success, and to Investigate whether nest-site selection along a gradient of nest height can modulate the risk of SLR. Outputs from the model revealed that present-day levels of predation risk pose as great a risk to nesting success as tidal flooding under simulated SLR conditions with extreme flooding risks. Nest success rates could become very low under extreme SLR scenarios, especially when predation risk Is very high. The risks of failure from either threat are linked through nest-slte selection behaviors; In hlgh-predatlon-rlsk seasons, failure probability from flooding Is greater than It would be under lower predation risk, due to the predation avoidance behavior of nesting closer to the ground. Therefore, management actions to reduce the risk of excessive failures from predation could reduce the risk of failures from both threats--a potentially useful management strategy, given that controlling predation Is more tractable than controlling Increased flooding from SLR at a local level. The threatened Mojave desert tortoise (Gopherus agassizii) exhibits temperature-dependent sex determination, and individuals appear externally sexually monomorphic until sexual maturity. A non-surgical sex identification method that is suitable for a single in situ encounter with hatchlings is essential for minimizing handling of wild animals. We tested (1) whether plasma testosterone quantified by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay differentiated males from females in 0–3 month old captive hatchlings, and (2) whether an injection of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) differentially elevates testosterone in male hatchlings to aid in identifying sex. We validated sex by ceolioscopic (laparoscopic) surgery. We then fit the testosterone concentrations to lognormal distributions and identified the concentration below which individuals are more likely female, and above which individuals are more likely male. Using a parametric bootstrapping procedure, we estimated a 0.01–0.04% misidentification rate for naïve testosterone samples, and a 1.26–1.39% misidentification rate for challenged (post-FSH injection) testosterone samples. Quantification of plasma testosterone concentration from small volume (0.1 mL) blood samples appears to be a viable, highly accurate method to identify sex of 0–3 month old hatchlings and could be a valuable tool for conservation measures and investigation of trends and variation in sex ratios for in situ wild nests. Habitat selection trade-offs between avoiding predation and gaining energy are well studied, but similar trade-offs resulting from multiple threats to survival remain poorly understood. We studied how seaside sparrows, Ammodramus maritimus , approach nest site selection decisions to avoid threats to nesting success from predation and tidal flooding. Along a nest height gradient, nest site selection to avoid tidal flooding (i.e. placing nests higher) may make seaside sparrow nests more vulnerable to predation, and selection to avoid predation may make nests susceptible to flooding. We monitored nesting success rates and nest site selection decisions of breeding seaside sparrow pairs at five sites near Brunswick, Georgia in April–July of 2013–2015. We found that seaside sparrows encountered a nest site selection trade-off along a gradient of nest height. Nest height had an effect on survival probability during each of our study years, with positive effects of nest height on predation probability and negative effects of nest height on flooding probability observed in some years. Sparrows dealt with this trade-off by altering their nest site selection in relation to a threat's predictability; low within-season variability in predation risk and high information about predator presence in open marshes make predation risk more predictable than the magnitude of tidal flooding, which is governed by unpredictable and variable winds. Sparrows responded to predictable predation threats by nesting at lower nest heights in years with higher predation risk, but sparrows responded to unpredictable flooding threats by placing nests higher off the ground but only following nest failure from flooding. Symbiosis is one of the most important evolutionary processes shaping the biodiversity on Earth. Symbiotic associations often bring together organisms from different domains of life, which can provide an unparalleled route to evolutionary innovation. 1–4 The phylum Apicomplexa encompasses 6,000 ubiquitous animal parasites; however, species in the recently described apicomplexan family, Nephromycidae, are reportedly non-virulent. 5,6 The members of the genus Nephromyces live within a specialized organ of tunicates, called the renal sac, in which they use concentrated uric acid as a primary nitrogen source. 7,8 Here, we report genomic and transcriptomic data from the diverse genus Nephromyces , as well as the three bacterial symbionts that live within this species complex. We show that the diversity of Nephromyces is unexpectedly high within each renal sac, with as many as 20 different species inhabiting the renal sacs in wild populations. The many species of Nephromyces can host three different types of bacterial endosymbionts; however, FISH microscopy allowed us to demonstrate that each individual Nephromyces cell hosts only a single bacterial type. Through the reconstruction and analyses of the endosymbiont bacterial genomes, we infer that each bacterial type supplies its host with different metabolites. No individual species of Nephromyces , in combination with its endosymbiont, can produce a complete set of essential amino acids, and culture experiments demonstrate that individual Nephromyces species cannot form a viable infection. Therefore, we hypothesize that Nephromyces spp. depend on co-infection with congeners containing different bacterial symbionts in order to exchange metabolites to meet their needs. • Nephromyces is a diverse apicomplexan that can harbor three bacterial endosymbionts • Each individual Nephromyces contains only a single bacterial species • No bacterial endosymbiont completes the metabolic needs of Nephromyces • Nephromyces with different endosymbionts must likely exchange metabolites Paight et al. demonstrate that the members of the apicomplexan genus Nephromyces can host three different types of highly reduced bacterial endosymbionts; however, none produce all necessary metabolites. The gopher tortoise ( I Gopherus polyphemus i ) is a burrowing tortoise endemic to the sandy uplands of the southeastern United States Coastal Plain, and its range spans from eastern Louisiana to southwestern South Carolina to southern Florida. In McKee et al. (2021), the authors estimated apparent survival rates of waif tortoises (tortoises displaced by human collection) translocated to the Aiken Gopher Tortoise Heritage Preserve, South Carolina, at the extreme northern extent of the range. Restoration of extirpated species via captive breeding has typically relied on population viability as the primary criterion for evaluating success. This criterion is inadequate when species reintroduction is undertaken to restore ecological functions and interactions. Herein we report on the demographic and ecological outcomes of a five-decade-long population restoration program for a critically endangered species of “ecosystem engineer”: the endemic Española giant Galapagos tortoise (Chelonoidis hoodensis). Our analysis of complementary datasets on tortoise demography and movement, tortoise-plant interactions and Española Island’s vegetation history indicated that the repatriated tortoise population is secure from a strictly demographic perspective: about half of tortoises released on the island since 1975 were still alive in 2007, in situ reproduction is now significant, and future extinction risk is low with or without continued repatriation. Declining survival rates, somatic growth rates, and body condition of repatriates suggests, however, that resources for continued population growth are increasingly limited. Soil stable carbon isotope analyses indicated a pronounced shift toward woody plants in the recent history of the island’s plant community, likely a legacy of changes in competitive relations between woody and herbaceous plants induced by now-eradicated feral goats and prolonged absence of tortoises. Woody plants are of concern because they block tortoise movement and hinder recruitment of cactus–a critical resource for tortoises. Tortoises restrict themselves to remnant cactus patches and areas of low woody plant density in the center of the island despite an apparent capacity to colonize a far greater range, likely because of a lack of cactus elsewhere on the island. We conclude that ecosystem-level criteria for success of species reintroduction efforts take much longer to achieve than population-level criteria; moreover, reinstatement of endangered species as fully functioning ecosystem engineers may often require large-scale habitat restoration efforts in concert with population restoration. Loss of native herbivores and introduction of livestock in many arid and semi-arid ecosystems around the world has shifted the competitive balance from herbaceous to woody plants, leading to biodiversity loss, reduced plant productivity, and soil erosion. To restore functions of these ecosystems, ecological replacements have been proposed as substitutes for extinct native herbivores. Here we predict how an ecological replacement giant tortoise population ( Chelonoidis spp.) would interact with woody plants on Pinta Island in the Galápagos Archipelago, where a small group of replacement tortoises was introduced in 2010 to initiate restoration of the island's plant community. We developed an individual-based, spatially explicit simulation model that incorporated field-derived tortoise behavior and tortoise-plant interaction data to test whether tortoise introductions could lead to broad-scale changes in the plant community and, if so, at what tortoise densities. Tortoises reduced vegetation density in most (81%) 50-year-long simulations if the tortoise density was at least 0.7 per hectare, a value well below typical densities. In a smaller proportion of simulations (30%), tortoises increased local vegetation patchiness. Our results suggest that even moderate-density tortoise populations can reverse woody plant encroachment. Deployment of ecological replacement giant tortoises may therefore be a viable approach for restoring other arid and semi-arid ecosystems where a native herbivore that previously had strong interactions with the plant community has gone extinct. That suicide was a damnable sin in Reformation England has been emphasized so far in the historiography of self-killing, but in practice the clergy were equivocal over the question of whether all self-killers were damned. This article re-examines English Protestant beliefs about suicide and salvation from the mid-sixteenth to the mid-seventeenth century. It suggests that clerical statements about the damnableness of suicide need to be understood in the context of the threat posed by Stoic philosophy. Religious writers rejected the notion of noble suicide and reiterated Augustinian theology that premeditated self-killing was a form of murder. However, the harsh rhetoric was mitigated by a number of factors that brought into question the idea that all suicides were destined for Hell. These included changing medical opinion about mental states, evidence of the good character of many suicides, belief in the overpowering influence of demonic forces and basic Christian charity and compassion. Loss of key plant-animal interactions (e.g., disturbance, seed dispersal, and herbivory) due to extinctions of large herbivores has diminished ecosystem functioning nearly worldwide. Mitigating for the ecological consequences of large herbivore losses through the use of ecological replacements to fill extinct species' niches and thereby replicate missing ecological functions has been proposed. It is unknown how different morphologically and ecologically a replacement can be from the extinct species and still provide similar functions. We studied niche equivalency between 2 phenotypes of Galápagos giant tortoises (domed and saddlebacked) that were translocated to Pinta Island in the Galápagos Archipelago as ecological replacements for the extinct saddlebacked giant tortoise (Chelonoidis abingdonii). Thirty-nine adult, nonreproductive tortoises were introduced to Pinta Island in May 2010, and we observed tortoise resource use in relation to phenotype during the first year following release. Domed tortoises settled in higher, moister elevations than saddlebacked tortoises, which favored lower elevation arid zones. The areas where the tortoises settled are consistent with the ecological conditions each phenotype occupies in its native range. Saddlebacked tortoises selected areas with high densities of the arboreal prickly pear cactus (Opuntia galapageia) and mostly foraged on the cactus, which likely relied on the extinct saddlebacked Pinta tortoise for seed dispersal. In contrast, domed tortoises did not select areas with cactus and therefore would not provide the same seed-dispersal functions for the cactus as the introduced or the original, now extinct, saddlebacked tortoises. Interchangeability of extant megaherbivores as replacements for extinct forms therefore should be scrutinized given the lack of equivalency we observed in closely related forms of giant tortoises. Our results also demonstrate the value of trial introductions of sterilized individuals to test niche equivalency among candidate analog species. Caretta caretta (Loggerhead Sea Turtle) is a globally threatened sea turtle species that nests on United States Atlantic coast beaches. While several environmental factors influence egg incubation and hatching success, maternal identity may also play an important role and has been overlooked. New molecular advances, such as ongoing genetic capture-recapture using eggshells, allow the identification of individual females using fresh eggshells, which can then be used to track nesting and hatching success across individual females. Across 2 consecutive nesting seasons, we monitored 170 nests for environmental conditions as part of a larger Georgia Department of Natural Resources monitoring program. Mothers had been identified using molecular data and classified as either neophytes or remigrants. We identified 34 of the nests as belonging to neophyte Loggerhead mothers, which exhibited a 61% hatching success rate, compared to only 46% success for remigrant mothers (P < 0.01). Further analysis suggested no differences in environmental parameters between neophyte and remigrant nests. Thus, while it is possible that different-aged mothers make different nesting-site choices that could affect the nest environment, it is likely that Loggerhead reproductive biology, such as maternal investment, may change over time. More data are required to fully investigate maternal effects on hatching success and to elucidate the mechanisms, both within this species and across multiple species of sea turtles. Connecting the continuum of post-acute care stroke services may be important for easing patients' transition between settings and facilitating recovery and community reintegration. The use of outcome measures is suggested as one means of connecting the continuum. The purpose of this qualitative case study is to describe administrators' and physiotherapists' perceived value of an outcomes program across the post-acute care stroke continuum at a rehabilitation hospital. Data were collected through individual interviews and focus groups with 18 participants. Three themes emerged on the value of the outcomes program: 1) enhanced communication; 2) supports clinical decision-making; and 3) value of objective data. These findings lend support for the use of standardized outcome measures by physiotherapists in stroke rehabilitation. Findings from this study may be useful for organizations and physiotherapists who wish to integrate outcome measures into practice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article describes results from a qualitative study that explored the role and function of legacy in the lives of women cancer survivors. Legacy emerged as the passing on of values and beliefs. The results were derived from information gathered from in-depth interviews with 14 women aged 31-81 years, diagnosed with cancer. The interviews collected information related to what the women wanted their legacy to be, and how and to whom they hope to transmit it. Analysis of the interviews was guided by a typology of three distinct but overlapping categories of legacy: Legacy of Belongings, Legacy of Body, and a Legacy of Being (Hunter & Rowles, 2005). One recurring theme from the interviews was the hope that family members would learn from the experiences of the participants and would adopt positive health behaviors and cancer screening. The findings suggest that addressing legacy interests and opportunities may be an important tool for addressing needs of cancer survivors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: This article explores the understudied phenomenon of legacy as a component of the aging experience. Against a backdrop of almost exclusive prior focus on transmission of material possessions as the primary form of legacy, the concept is critically examined in developing an expanded, theoretically and empirically grounded perspective. In-depth interviews conducted with 14 adults, ranging in age from 31 to 94 and representing diverse marital, parental and health statuses, reveal multiple dimensions of leaving a legacy in terms of content, creation and transmission. A typology of three distinct but overlapping categories of legacy was identified: biological legacy, material legacy and a legacy of values. Sub-types were identified within each category. Each participant clearly articulated and identified with at least one form of legacy and the majority expressed all three types but with varying degrees of intensity and with the legacy of values viewed as more important than other forms of legacy The findings suggest the need and potential for developing deeper insight into a component of the aging experience that may assume particular significance toward the end of life. It tells about the author's meeting with Bert Frothingham, daughter of book editor Maxwell Perkins. Perkins was the editor of the manuscripts of American author Thomas Wolfe.

Objectives. This study had three aims: (1) to independently replicate the future thinking effect, that parasuicides, when compared with controls, show a deficit in positive future thinking but no increase in negative future thinking; (2) to determine whether positive future thinking and socially prescribed perfectionism discriminate general hospital parasuicides from controls beyond measures of affect and; (3) to explore the relationship between future thinking and perfectionism. Design. A cross-sectional design was employed. Three groups of participants took part: hospital parasuicide patients (N = 22), hospital controls (N = 22) and community controls (N = 21). Methods. Parasuicide patients admitted, via accident and emergency, to a general hospital were matched with hospital and community controls and assessed on measures of hopelessness, depression, anxiety, perfectionism, and future thinking. Results. There was evidence to support the future thinking effect. A discriminant function analysis revealed that social perfectionism and positive future thinking did indeed discriminate parasuicides from controls beyond the effects of hopelessness, depression, and anxiety. Exploratory relationships between perfectionism and positive future thinking were also reported. Conclusions. The results reinforce the importance of future thinking in parasuicide. Moreover, the role of social perfectionism in the suicidal process was elucidated and ought to be replicated within a prospective design. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary Climate change has been implicated as driving shifts of hybridizing species’ range limits [ 1, 2 ]. Whether and how much hybrid zones move depends on the relative fitness of hybridzing species under changing conditions [ 3, 4 ]. However, fitness is rarely linked to both climatic conditions and movement of hybrid zones, such that the relationship between climate change and hybrid zone dynamics remains tenuous [ 5 ]. Here we report how interactions between climate (seasonal precipitation) and competitor densities result in steep differentials in survival, which in turn drive hybrid zone movement for two woodrat species ( Neotoma fuscipes and N. macrotis ) in central California, USA. Using 6 years of capture-mark-recapture data, we found that the smaller-bodied species, N. macrotis , and hybrids had survival advantages over the larger-bodied N. fuscipes in the contact region during dry winters and wet springs. This pattern of differential survival, with N. macrotis having a consistent advantage over N. fuscipes during our study period, matched the spatial dynamics of the hybrid zone, which moved steadily north into N. fuscipes territory, with its estimated center moving ∼150 m north in 6 years. Our findings provide a unique demonstration of range movements emerging from a complex interplay between climate and competition. Although all study site areas experienced the same climatic conditions, competitive effects created a complex spatial pattern of survival differentials, which in turn influenced hybrid zone movement. Characterization of fitness differentials derived from replicated demographic studies of contact regions between competitors should greatly improve our ability to understand and forecast climate-driven range dynamics. We document the first recorded instance of a fish depredating a hatchling bird while in the nest. Some coastal marsh-nesting avian species, such as the Seaside Sparrow (Ammospiza maritima), experience tradeoffs between the threat of nest predation and nest flooding. Nesting too low may result in nest flooding during the twice-daily high tides and increasing nest height increases the risk of nest predation. However, not much is known about how nest height affects exposure to different predators. We observed a mummichog (Fundulus heteroclitus) enter a Seaside Sparrow nest during a nest flooding event and depredate a hatchling. This observation expands our understanding of the predator–prey relationships experienced by coastal marsh-nesting birds, and the potential detriments of intensifying sea level rise on their nesting success. Objectives: To explore the experiences of diagnostic disclosure and disclosure to others in adolescents with Turner syndrome (TS) and their parents/guardians. In addition, we sought to examine the impact of TS on girls with TS and their family's lives. Design: A qualitative method utilizing interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) was employed. Methods: Five girls with TS and one parent/guardian of each girl completed dyadic and individual semi‐structured interviews. Interviews were audio recorded and analysed verbatim. Data were analysed in accordance with IPA guidelines, with a focus on the dynamic interactions within dyads. Results: Analyses identified three superordinate themes across the 10 participant accounts: communication and support, stigmatization of TS, and psychological consequences. Ten related subthemes are described alongside relevant quotations, highlighting a gradual process of diagnostic disclosure within families and wider health care systems. Both girls and their parents appeared to express a general desire to conceal TS from others, indicating possible TS‐related stigma. The results also demonstrate the varying impact TS can have within families. Conclusions: The findings provide insight into the lived experience of receiving a diagnosis of TS and the possible difficulties around disclosure to others. Potential recommendations for clinicians and parents include ensuring direct conversations about infertility occur within treatment and facilitating open, honest communication. The purpose of this study was to investigate how the environment influenced the intervention choices occupational therapists made for patients recovering from a stroke in an inpatient rehabilitation hospital. Three occupational therapists were observed providing intervention for six patients over a 16-month period. Treatment spaces included a therapy gym, gym with kitchen combination, and a home-like space. Furniture was added to the therapy gym to be more home-like midway through the study. Observations included therapist selection of treatment location and interventions, and observational data of the environment and interactions among therapists and patients. This study found that inpatient rehabilitation environments did influence interventions. The occupational therapists provided therapy in the standard therapy gym environment most often, whether it was enhanced to be more home-like or not, and predominately used preparatory methods. Aims: To better understand occupational therapists’ clinical decision making processes as they selected which rehabilitation environment to work in, and how the therapists perceived the environment impacted their choice of intervention.Methods: Focus group and individual interviews were conducted following observation of three occupational therapists providing interventions for 16 months with 12 clients following a stroke at an inpatient rehabilitation hospital stroke unit. Therapists could chose from three different environments for interventions: a therapy gym, homelike space, or a combination space.Results: Three themes emerged that revealed therapists’ habits influenced their clinical reasoning; the environment influenced therapists’ intervention choices; and therapists felt safer treating in the gym environment.Conclusion:The environment influenced the therapists’ intervention choices as well as their clinical reasoning. A study was conducted to explore occupational therapists' perceptions of rehabilitation environments and the influence of these perceptions on practice and occupational interventions. Traditionally, inpatient occupational therapists have a choice of intervention environments, ranging from a gym-like to a more home-like setting. Choosing to provide interventions in these different environments can have an impact on occupational performance. In this qualitative exploration, 21 occupational therapists participated in focus groups designed to explore their perceptions of practice environments. Analysis of the transcribed data revealed that therapists felt rehabilitation environments should offer choices and be flexible, that environments influenced intervention strategies, and that the practice environment had an impact on professional identity. On the basis of this data, a conceptual matrix of the intersection of environmental setting and occupation-based interventions is presented to highlight the importance of these two aspects of therapy. Oysters (Crassostrea virginica) provide multiple ecosystem services to coastal habitats. Due to their declines, numerous restoration efforts target oysters, making it critical to explore factors that might limit recovery. Biotic stressors, such as pea crabs and boring sponges, can negatively affect oysters, and may interact with abiotic stressors like tidal exposure. In this study, boring sponge and pea crab distribution patterns were explored across an intertidal gradient on oyster reefs in Georgia (32.002° N, − 080.920° W) in the summer of 2016, while considering the effects of both stressors on oyster condition. Boring sponges and pea crabs were both most abundant on the lower intertidal of reefs (15% and 6% prevalence, respectively) and decreased with increasing tidal exposure (~ 1% prevalence of both pests in the upper intertidal). Pea crabs had a more negative effect on oyster condition in the upper intertidal zone (27% difference), whereas boring sponges caused the greatest condition reduction in the lower intertidal zone (30% difference). Pea crabs were more abundant in sponge-infected oysters than uninfected oysters. An observed negative relationship between oyster density and sponges suggests that higher sponge prevalence may drive low oyster density in the lower intertidal zone. Since biotic stressors on oyster reefs can affect oyster population structure and reef function, understanding their distribution and interactions is important for management and restoration. While sponges and pea crabs are not likely to be eliminated by restoration efforts, careful attention to location within the tidal prism can minimize their impacts on restoration efforts, particularly in the southeastern USA. Background: Experimental evidence shows postnatal exposure to anesthesia negatively affects brain development. The PDZ2 domain, mediating protein-protein interactions of the postsynaptic density-95 protein, serves as a molecular target for several inhaled anesthetics. The authors hypothesized that early postnatal disruption of postsynaptic density-95 PDZ2 domain interactions has persistent effects on dendritic spines and cognitive function.Methods: One-week-old mice were exposed to 1.5% isoflurane for 4 h or injected with 8 mg/kg active postsynaptic density-95 wild-type PDZ2 peptide along with their respective controls. A subset of these mice also received 4 mg/kg of the nitric oxide donor molsidomine. Hippocampal spine density, long-term potentiation, novel object recognition memory, and fear learning and memory were evaluated in mice.Results: Exposure of 7-day-old mice to isoflurane or postsynaptic density-95 wild-type PDZ2 peptide relative to controls causes: (1) a long-term decrease in mushroom spines at 7 weeks (mean ± SD [spines per micrometer]): control (0.8 ± 0.2) versus isoflurane (0.4 ± 0.2), P < 0.0001, and PDZ2MUT (0.7 ± 0.2) versus PDZ2WT (0.4 ± 0.2), P < 0.001; (2) deficits in object recognition at 6 weeks (mean ± SD [recognition index]): naïve (70 ± 8) versus isoflurane (55 ± 14), P = 0.010, and control (65 ± 13) versus isoflurane (55 ± 14), P = 0.045, and PDZ2MUT (64 ±11) versus PDZ2WT (53 ± 18), P = 0.045; and (3) deficits in fear learning at 7 weeks and memory at 8 weeks (mean ± SD [% freezing duration]): Learning, control (69 ± 12) versus isoflurane (52 ± 13), P < 0.0001, and PDZ2MUT (65 ± 14) versus PDZ2WT (55 ± 14) P = 0.011, and Memory, control (80 ± 17) versus isoflurane (56 ± 23), P < 0.0001 and PDZ2MUT (73 ± 18) versus PDZ2WT (44 ± 19) P < 0.0001. The isoflurane induced decrease in mushroom spines was preventable by introduction of a nitric oxide donor.Conclusions: Early disruption of PDZ2 domain-mediated protein-protein interactions mimics isoflurane in decreasing mushroom spine density and causing learning and memory deficits in mice.
