The mid-infrared lightweight stratospheric hygrometer, "Pico-Light H2O", the successor of Pico-SDLA H2O, is presented and its performances are evaluated during the AsA 2022 balloon-borne intercomparison campaign conducted at CNES Aire-sur-l'Adour (AsA) balloon launch facility and the Aeroclub d'Aire-sur-l'Adour. The Pico-Light instrument primarily been developed for sounding of the upper troposphere and stratosphere. Though, during the AsA 2022 campaign we expand the range of comparison including the lower troposphere additionally. Three different types of hygrometers and two models of radiosonde were flown, operated by the French Space Agency (CNES) and the NOAA Global Monitoring Laboratory (GML) scientific teams: Pico-Light H2O, the NOAA Frost Point Hygrometer (FPH), the micro hygrometer (in an early phase of development), M20 and iMet-4 sondes. In this frame, we intend to validate measurements of Pico-Light H2O through a first intercomparison with the NOAA FPH instrument. The in situ monitoring of water vapour in the UT-LS keeps being very challenging from an instrumental point of view because of the very small amounts of water vapour to be measured in these regions of the atmosphere. Between the lapse rate tropopause (11 to 12.3 km) and 20 km, the mean relative difference between water vapour mixing ratio measurements by Pico-Light H2O and NOAA FPH was (4.2 ± 7.7) %, mean tropospheric difference is was (3.84 ± 23.64)%, with differences depending on the altitude range considered. In the troposphere, relative humidity over water (RH) comparisons leads to an agreement between both Pico-Light and NOAA FPH of -0.2% on average, with excursions of about 30% RH due to moisture variability. Expanding the comparison to meteorological sondes, the iMet-4 sondes agree well with both Pico-Light and FPH between ground and 7.5 km (within ± 3% RH) and so does for M20 sondes, up to 13 km, which are wet biased by 3% RH and dry biased by 20% in case of saturation. Satellite data records of stratospheric water vapour have been compared to balloon-borne frost point hygrometer (FP) profiles that are coincident in space and time. The satellite data records of 15 different instruments cover water vapour data available from January 2000 through December 2016. The hygrometer data are from 27 stations all over the world in the same period. For the comparison, real or constructed averaging kernels have been applied to the hygrometer profiles to adjust them to the measurement characteristics of the satellite instruments. For bias evaluation, we have compared satellite profiles averaged over the available temporal coverage to the means of coincident FP profiles for individual stations. For drift determinations, we analysed time series of relative differences between spatiotemporally coincident satellite and hygrometer profiles at individual stations. In a synopsis we have also calculated the mean biases and drifts (and their respective uncertainties) for each satellite record over all applicable hygrometer stations in three altitude ranges (10–30 hPa, 30–100 hPa, and 100 hPa to tropopause). Most of the satellite data have biases <10 % and average drifts <1 % yr -1 in at least one of the respective altitude ranges. Virtually all biases are significant in the sense that their uncertainty range in terms of twice the standard error of the mean does not include zero. Statistically significant drifts (95 % confidence) are detected for 35 % of the ≈ 1200 time series of relative differences between satellites and hygrometers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Stratospheric aerosol plays an important role in Earth's radiative balance. Systematic measurements of stratospheric aerosol number concentration and size are needed to characterize their baseline values and variability, improve understanding of aerosol microphysics, and assess the representation of stratospheric aerosol processes in global models. In situ measurements of particle size distribution provide insight into the responses of stratospheric aerosol processes to perturbations from volcanoes and wildfires, anthropogenic emissions from rockets and aircraft, or intentional injections related to climate intervention. The Baseline Balloon Stratospheric Aerosol Profiles (B2SAP) project uses compact, lightweight payloads carried by meteorological balloons to measure aerosol number density and size distributions, water vapor, ozone, and meteorological data from the surface to the middle stratosphere. The long‐term goal for the B2SAP project is to produce climatologies of aerosol number and size distributions into the middle stratosphere at latitudinally distributed measurement sites. Since March 2019, B2SAP payloads have been launched from Boulder, CO, USA once to twice per month and four to six times per year from Lauder, NZ. These measurements provide a new record of in situ stratospheric aerosol observations and are being used to help validate satellite‐based estimates of stratospheric aerosol size distributions. Here we present 50 vertical profiles from Boulder, CO, from March 2019 to March 2022, to build a NH mid‐latitude climatology of stratospheric aerosol and its variability and investigate the impact of natural perturbations on stratospheric aerosol microphysics. Plain Language Summary: Particles in the stratosphere play important roles in chemistry and climate. Lightweight instruments carried by weather balloons can provide systematic measurements of the particle number and size, atmospheric water vapor and ozone (two gases that also influence atmospheric chemistry and climate) to inform these areas of research. Without weather in the stratosphere, the sources and sinks of particles are few, and concentrations of particles change slowly over time, in the absence of powerful volcanic eruptions or large wildfires, which can inject or loft material into the stratosphere. Particularly in these cases, balloon‐borne observations can be critical to validating satellite retrievals and improving global climate models. As part of the Baseline Balloon Stratospheric Aerosol Profiles (B2SAP) project, weather balloon launches with the instruments described above have taken place from Boulder, CO, USA and Lauder, NZ since March 2019. Here we present 50 vertical profiles from Boulder, CO from March 2019 to March 2022, which are used to provide a new record (to produce a climatology) at midlatitudes in the in the northern hemisphere and investigate the impact of volcanic eruptions and large wildfires within this period. Key Points: Balloon‐borne measurements are used to build a northern hemisphere (NH) midlatitude climatology of stratospheric aerosol number density and sizeVariability of NH midlatitude stratospheric aerosol number density exhibits a minimum of a factor of ∼2 near 22 km altitude (θ = 550 K)NH Stratospheric aerosol perturbations during 2019–2022 are detected and characterized using aerosol microphysical properties [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Approximatley 1000 whole air samples were collected and assayed for selected C2-C5 hydrocarbons during the 6-week Arctic Boundary Layer Expedition (ABLE 3A). Transit flights enabled latitudinal (40°N to 83°N) and longitudinal (70°W to 155°W) profiles to be obtained for altitudes between 4000 and 6000m yielding summertime background mixing ratios for ethane, ethyne, propane and n-butane of 1050±200, 100±40, 120±80 and 10±8 pptv, respectively. Drilling associated with oil exploration in the Alaskan North Slope area is suggested to be a probable source of the enhanced levels of alkanes observed in the Arctic region within a radius in excess of 300km from Prudhoe Bay, Alaska. A significant number of pollution plumes were encountered which could be attributed to wildfires. Factors describing the emissions caused by biomass burning relative to ethane for ethyne (0.40) and propane (0.08) were determined. -from Authors

Nitrous oxide (N
2 O) is the fourth most important greenhouse gas in the atmosphere and is considered the most important current source gas emission for global stratospheric ozone depletion (O3 ). It has natural and anthropogenic sources, mainly as an unintended by-product of food production activities. This work examines the identification and quantification of trends in the N2 O concentration from the middle troposphere to the middle stratosphere (MTMS) by in situ and remote sensing observations. The temporal variability of N2 O is addressed using a comprehensive dataset of in situ and remote sensing N2 O concentrations based on aircraft and balloon measurements in the MTMS from 1987 to 2018. We determine N2 O trends in the MTMS, based on observations. This consistent dataset was also used to study the N2 O seasonal cycle to investigate the relationship between abundances and its emission sources through zonal means. The results show a long-term increase in global N2 O concentration in the MTMS with an average of 0.89 ± 0.07 ppb/yr in the troposphere and 0.96 ± 0.15 ppb/yr in the stratosphere, consistent with 0.80 ppb/yr derived from ground-based measurements and 0.799 ± 0.024 ppb/yr ACE-FTS (Atmospheric Chemistry Experiment Fourier Transform Spectrometer) satellite measurements. The significant climate feedback of stratospheric water vapor (SWV) necessitates quantitative estimates of SWV budget changes. Model simulations driven by the newest European Centre for Medium‐Range Weather Forecast reanalysis ERA5, satellite observations from the Stratospheric Water and OzOne Satellite Homogenized data set, Microwave Limb Sounder, and in situ frost point hygrometer observations from Boulder all show substantial and persistent stratospheric moistening after a sharp drop in water vapor at the turn of the millennium. This moistening occurred mainly during 2000–2006 and SWV abundances then remained high over the last decade. We find strong positive trends in the Northern Hemisphere and weak negative trends over the South Pole, mainly during austral winter. Moistening of the tropical stratosphere after 2000 occurred during late boreal winter/spring, reached values of ∼0.2 ppm/decade, was well correlated with a warming of the cold point tropopause by ∼0.4 K/decade and can only be partially attributed to El Nino‐Southern Oscillation and volcanic eruptions., Plain Language Summary: Water vapor is an effective greenhouse gas. Human‐induced climate change has led to warmer air in the troposphere, which consequently can hold more moisture, thus enhancing the greenhouse effect. The long‐term change in stratospheric water vapor (SWV) is less clear and currently under debate. Using satellite observations, balloon soundings and model simulations, we find an increase of SWV after 2000. This moistening occurred mainly during 2000–2006 and the stratospheric moisture content then remained high over the last decade. The increase of SWV is stronger in the Northern than in the Southern Hemisphere. Over the South Pole, a weak decrease was found. Moistening of the tropical stratosphere occurred mainly during late winter and spring, and was in line with warming of the tropical tropopause, the coldest region that separates the troposphere and stratosphere. Natural causes such as volcanic eruptions cannot completely explain this stratospheric moistening., Key Points: Stratospheric moistening after 2000 is clearly detectable in ERA5‐driven simulations, satellite and in situ observations. Hemispheric asymmetry is found with strong positive trends in the Northern Hemisphere and weak negative trends over the South Pole. Moistening of the lower tropical stratosphere is only partially caused by El Nino‐Southern Oscillation and volcanic eruptions., https://doi.org/10.5067/Aura/MLS/DATA2508, https://doi.org/10.5067/GLOSSAC-L3-V2.0

Nineteen limb-viewing data sets (occultation, passive thermal, and UV scattering) and two nadir upper tropospheric humidity (UTH) data sets are intercompared and also compared to frost-point hygrometer balloon sondes. The upper troposphere considered here covers the pressure range from 300–100 hPa. UTH is a challenging measurement, because concentrations vary between 2–1000 ppmv (parts per million by volume), with sharp changes in vertical gradients near the tropopause. Cloudiness in this region also makes the measurement challenging. The atmospheric temperature is also highly variable ranging from 180–250 K. The assessment of satellite-measured UTH is based on coincident comparisons with balloon frost-point hygrometer sondes , multi-month mapped comparisons, zonal mean time series comparisons, and coincident satellite-to-satellite comparisons. While the satellite fields show similar features in maps and time series, quantitatively they can differ by a factor of 2 in concentration, with strong dependencies on the amount of UTH. Additionally, time-lag response-corrected Vaisala RS92 radiosondes are compared to satellites and the frost-point hygrometer measurements. In summary, most satellite data sets reviewed here show on average ∼30 % agreement amongst themselves and frost-point data but with an additional ∼30 % variability about the mean bias. The Vaisala RS92 sonde, even with a time-lag correction, shows poor behavior for pressures less than 200 hPa. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Various rigging configurations for multiple-payload radiosonde soundings have been used when characterizing different radiosonde instruments, when changing the radiosonde model at operational radiosonde sites or when flying specially developed scientific sensors together with a radiosonde. This paper describes such rigging configurations currently in use at sites of the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS) Reference Upper Air Network (GRUAN) or having been used during recent international radiosonde intercomparison campaigns. The advantages and potential issues for each configuration are discussed in detail. Though it is difficult to provide one single recommendation for all conditions, the paper aims at providing all the key information relevant to the multiple-payload configurations towards the future determination of the best-practice guidance for GRUAN and other sites.

Meteorology And Climatology - Abstract
Balloon sonde measurements of tropical water vapor using the Cryogenic Frostpoint Hygrometer were initiated in Costa Rica in July 2005 and have continued to the present day. Over the nine years through July 2014, the Ticosonde program has launched 174 CFH payloads, representing the longest-running and most extensive single-site balloon dataset for tropical water vapor. In this presentation we present a seasonal climatology for water vapor and ozone at Costa Rica and examine the frequency of upper tropospheric supersaturation with comparisons to cloud fraction and cloud ice water content observations from the Cloud Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP) on the CALIPSO mission. We then make a critical comparison of these data to water vapor measurements from the MLS instrument on board Aura in light of recently published work for other sites. Finally, we examine time series of 2-km altitude averages in the upper troposphere-lower stratosphere at Costa Rica in light of anomalies and trends seen in various large-scale indices of tropical water vapor.

Nineteen limb viewing (occultation and passive thermal) and two nadir humidity data sets are intercompared and also compared to frostpoint hygrometer balloon sondes. The upper troposphere considered here covers the pressure range from 300-100 hPa. Water vapor in this region is a challenging measurement because concentrations vary between 2-1000 parts per million volume with sharp changes in vertical gradients near the tropopause. The atmospheric temperature is also highly variable ranging from 180-250 K. The assessment of satellite measured humidity is based on coincident comparisons with frostpoint hygrometer sondes, multi month mapped comparisons, zonal mean time series comparisons and coincident satellite to satellite comparisons. While the satellite fields show similar features in maps and time series, quantitatively, they can differ by a factor of two in concentration, with strong dependencies on the amount of H
2 O. Additionally, time-lag response corrected Vaisala-RS92 radiosondes are compared to satellites and the frostpoint hygrometer measurements. In summary, most satellite data sets reviewed here show on average ~30 % agreement amongst themselves and frostpoint data but with an additional ~30 % variability about the mean. The Vaisala-RS92 sonde even with a time-lag correction shows poor behavior for pressure less than 200 hPa. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published
