A debate has arisen over a plan to build the Bakun hydro-electric dam in Borneo, Malaysia. Critics argue that Malaysia would be better served by using gas reserves to produce electricity, while supporters argue that the plant makes sense in financial terms and will produce green power without contributing to global warming. The dam's lifespan has been estimated at 50 years and a large area of forest has to be felled in addition to the flooding of a valley. The dam is preferable to a nuclear power plant and reduces dependence on scarce gas reserves.

China has started construction of the $29 billion Three Gorges hydroelectric dam project which will be completed by 2011. The project has been criticised by environmentalists who argue that a number of smaller dams would be more efficient. There is concern that the large dam could trap human and industrial waste, and will destroy archeological treasures. The dam's seismological impact is not predictable. The project also involves resettling over 1.2 million people. The power plant will provide for around a tenth of energy demand in China.

The $4 billion Xiaolangdi dam being built on the Yellow River, China, has been hailed as a model project by the World Bank. Unlike the controversial Three Gorges project on the Yangtze River, the Xiaolangdi project has the backing of several international lending bodies, including the World Bank. The bank will lend some $1 billion to China for the project, making it the bank's largest commitment to the country. The Xiaolangdi dam, due to be completed in Jun 2001, will have a long-term storage capacity of over 5 billion cu mt, and will drive turbines with a capacity of 1,800 MW.

The National Trust has invested almost 1 million pounds sterling in renovating Aberdulais Falls in West Glamorgan, which now has a new 28 ft water-wheel. Water power has been used on the site for more than 400 years, and ruins of the nineteenth century tin-plate works can still be found there. The new water-wheel is the largest of its kind in Europe, and produces 25kW per hour. The site also features an underground turbine, a hydraulic lift and a fish-pass.
