Existing forest roads that are the base infrastructure foundation for forest management have been built with a focus on structural stability rather than ecological impact. In recent, however, the concerns on the ecological and environmental impacts on the forest road construction has been increased with the emphasis of sustainable forest management and the improvement of public awareness. Especially, the cut slopes that occurred on the forest road construction are known to affect the movement and habitat of wild animals living in the forest. This study aims to establish environmental and structural standards for the cut slopes by identifying the effect of forest road cut slopes on the movement of wild animals based on a survey of national forest roads in South Korea (30 km in total). Seven factors associated with forest road cut slopes, including cut slope length, cut slope gradient, soil type, longitudinal position, crossing position, aspect, and vegetation coverage, as well as wildlife tracks were investigated. As a result of statistical analysis using cross tabulation to determine the correlation of wildlife tracks with each cut slope factor, five factors (soil type, cut slope gradient, cut slope length, vegetation coverage, and crossing position) were significantly identified. Using these five factors, a prediction model to predict whether wildlife move or not on the cut slope was developed, and the discriminant hit ratio was 76.0%. Thus, using such models, there is a need to develop the guidelines of forest road installation considering the wildlife movement and of ecological corridor installation for more eco-friendly forest road construction and design in the future.

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has been regarded as one of the most important n-type two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenide semiconductors for nanoscale electron devices. Relatively high contact resistance (RC) remains as an issue in the 2D-devices yet to be resolved. Reliable technique is very compelling to practically produce low RC values in device electronics, although scientific approaches have been made to obtain a record-low RC. To resolve this practical issue, we here use thermal-evaporated ultrathin LiF between channel and source/drain metal to fabricate 2D-like MoS2 field effect transistors (FETs) with minimum RC. Under 4-bar FET method, RC less than ∼600 Ω·μm is achieved from the LiF/Au contact MoS2 FET. Our normal 2-bar FET with LiF thus shows the same mobility as that of 4-bar FET that should have no RC in principle. On the basis of these results, ultrathin LiF is also applied for transparent conducting oxide contact, successfully enabling transparent MoS2 FETs.

Massive death of cardiomyocytes is a major feature of cardiovascular diseases. Since the regenerative capacity of cardiomyocytes is limited, the regulation of their death has been receiving great attention. The cell death of cardiomyocytes is a complex mechanism that has not yet been clarified, and it is known to appear in various forms such as apoptosis, necrosis, etc. In ischemic heart disease, the apoptosis and necrosis of cardiomyocytes appear in two types of programmed forms (intrinsic and extrinsic pathways) and they account for a large portion of cell death. To repair damaged cardiomyocytes, diverse stem cell therapies have been attempted. However, despite the many positive effects, the low engraftment and survival rates have clearly limited the application of stem cells in clinical therapy. To solve these challenges, the introduction of the desired genes in stem cells can be used to enhance their capacity and improve their therapeutic efficiency. Moreover, as genome engineering technologies have advanced significantly, safer and more stable delivery of target genes and more accurate deletion of genes have become possible, which facilitates the genetic modification of stem cells. Accordingly, stem cell therapy for damaged cardiac tissue is expected to further improve. This review describes myocardial cell death, stem cell therapy for cardiac repair, and genome-editing technologies. In addition, we introduce recent stem cell therapies that incorporate genome-editing technologies in the myocardial infarction model.

A photothermal conversion of sol precursor by selective laser sintering (SLS) process has opened a novel patterning way for advanced electronic applications. The SLS process bases on the photo-thermal-chemical effect and features for high precision, fast processing, and room temperature processability without inert gas. Therefore, the effectiveness of the interaction between the nanomaterials and laser has examined on the various conductive metal nanomaterials such as gold, silver, and copper. Although the laser sintering process has shown many achievements on the metal nanomaterials, it has rarely studied for the interaction for the metal oxide nanomaterials. In this study, WOx thin film layer employs the SLS process for post-processing which enables patterning and annealing simultaneously with inducing photochemical redox reaction as well as photothermal effect. The SLS-processed WO3 thin film has shown similar electrochemical performances for the electrochromic application to the thermal annealed WO3 thin film. We have demonstrated a facile and fast fabrication of the electrochromic device (ECD) with the SLS-processed WO3 thin film layer.

To dope 2D semiconductor channels, charge-transfer doping has generally been done by thermal deposition of inorganic or organic thin-film layers on top of the 2D channel in bottom-gate field-effect transistors (FETs). The doping effects are reproducible in most cases. Evolution has decided to gift an articular structure to vertebrates, but not to invertebrates, owing to their distinct survival strategies. An articular structure permits kinematic motion in creatures. However, it is inappropriate for creatures whose survival strategy depends on the high deformability of their body. Accordingly, a material in which the presence of the articular structure can be altered, allowing the use of two contradictory strategies, will be advantageous in diverse dynamic applications. Herein, spatial micro‐water molecule manipulation, termed engineering on variable occupation of water (EVO), that is used to realize a material with dual mechanical modes that exhibit extreme differences in stiffness is introduced. A transparent and homogeneous soft material (110 kPa) reversibly converts to an opaque material embodying a mechanical gradient (ranging from 1 GPa to 1 MPa) by on‐demand switching. Intensive theoretical analysis of EVO yields the design of spatial transformation scheme. The EVO gel accomplishes kinematic motion planning and shows great promise for multimodal kinematics. This approach paves the way for the development and application of smart functional materials., In this paper, a strategy that manipulates micro‐water of hydrogel in reversible, selective, and on‐demand manner is reported. It realizes instant switching between a transparent and homogeneously soft gel and an opaque and heterogeneously rigid solid with a monolithic mechanical gradient. These two mechanical dual modes mimicking the characteristic of invertebrate and vertebrate demonstrate multi‐modal kinematics.

Stem cell-based therapy is one of the most attractive approaches to ischemic heart diseases, such as myocardial infarction (MI). We evaluated the cardio-protective effects of the human umbilical cord blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hUCB-MSCs) stably expressing lymphoid enhancer-binding factor 1 (LEF1; LEF1/hUCB-MSCs) in a rat model of MI. LEF1 overexpression in hUCB-MSCs promoted cell-proliferation and anti-apoptotic effects in hypoxic conditions. For the application of its therapeutic effects in vivo, the LEF1 gene was introduced into an adeno-associated virus integration site 1 (AAVS1) locus, known as a safe harbor site on chromosome 19 by CRISPR/Cas9-mediated gene integration in hUCB-MSCs. Transplantation of LEF1/hUCB-MSCs onto the infarction region in the rat model significantly improved overall survival. The cardio-protective effect of LEF1/hUCB-MSCs was proven by echocardiogram parameters, including greatly improved left-ventricle ejection fraction (EF) and fractional shortening (FS). Moreover, histology and immunohistochemistry successfully presented reduced MI region and fibrosis by LEF1/hUCB-MSCs. We found that these overall positive effects of LEF1/hUCB-MSCs are attributed by increased proliferation and survival of stem cells in oxidative stress conditions and by the secretion of various growth factors by LEF1. In conclusion, this study suggests that the stem cell-based therapy, conjugated with genome editing of transcription factor LEF1, which promotes cell survival, could be an effective therapeutic strategy for cardiovascular disease. Transparency in electronics can provide extra functionality and esthetic impression. Transparency plays an important role in accurate soft robot control because one can directly observe target surface condition that is usually blocked by a robot's body. Nowadays, demand for soft actuators has been rapidly increasing because soft robots have attracted much attention recently. However, conventional soft actuators are usually nontransparent with simple isotropic bending, limited performance, and limited functionality. To overcome such limitations of current soft robots, we developed a novel soft shape morphing thin film actuator with new functionalities such as high transparency and unique directional responses to allow complex behavior by integrating a transparent metal nanowire heater. A figure of merit was developed to evaluate the performance and derive an optimum design configuration for the transparent actuator with enhanced performance. As a proof of concept, various transparent soft robots such as transparent gripper, Venus flytrap, and transparent walking robot were demonstrated. Such transparent directional shape morphing actuator is expected to open new application fields and functionalities overcoming limitations of current soft robots.

Cancer research studies using next-generation sequencing have revealed a number of genes of which aberrant expression is associated with various cancers. Recently, long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) has been highlighted due to its tissue-specific expression and cell cancerization functions, such as the regulation of key tumor suppressors. In this study, we suggest a very efficient approach to survey lncRNAs putatively associated with breast cancer. We targeted lncRNAs linked with breast cancer associated genes (BCAGs) and analyzed their expression pattern in human breast cancer cell lines. A total of 337 BCAGs were retrieved from literature review and the existence of 121 lncRNAs were identified from the 15 kb up- and downstream regions of the list of genes. Twenty lncRNAs' expression were detectable in human breast cancer cell lines with different expression patterns. Interestingly, the expression of three lncRNAs, two up-regulated (RAD51C v.4, LOC105371849) and one down-regulated (LOC102724064), were closely correlated with adjacent BCAGs (RAD51C, HEATR6 and BRMS1) in breast cancer cell lines. We thus demonstrated association between the lncRNA and its adjacent BCAG using LOC105371849-HEATR6, of which the function and regulation in breast cancer are still unknown. Knockdown of LOC105371849 by siRNA decreased the expression of HEATR6 mRNA in the MCF7 human breast cancer cell line. In conclusion, this study provides a better understanding about the biological roles of lncRNAs in breast cancer and may be useful in the investigation of proper targets for diagnostic and/or therapeutic breast cancer markers using public databases.

Flexible micro/nano metal grid transparent conductors emerged as an alternative to the fragile/rigid indium tin oxide electrode. They are usually fabricated by the combination of the conventional photolithography and the vacuum deposition of regular metal grid patterns, however, seriously suffer from moiré and starburst problems induced by periodic regular pattern structures. In this paper, we demonstrated flexible and imperceptible random copper microconductors with an extremely high figure-of-merit (∼2000) by the thermal conduction layer-assisted photonic sintering of copper nanoparticles without damages in the plastic substrate. This process can be easily applied to complicated structures and surfaces including a random pattern which is imperceptible and free of interferences. As a proof-of-concept, a transparent windshield defogger in a car was demonstrated with a Cu transparent random conductor at an extreme and reversible fogging state.

Two integrated harvesting methods have been primarily applied to increase the opportunity for forest biomass utilization. In Korea, small shovels with a carrier for cut-to-length harvesting (CTL system) and tower yarders for whole-tree harvesting (WT system) are commonly used for the transportation of tree assortments (i.e., sawlogs and logging residue). No previous studies are available in South Korea that have compared and highlighted the operational performance and yield of logging residues between the CTL and WT harvesting systems. Thus, our study’s main objectives were to (1) evaluate the productivity and costs of the two harvesting systems through a standard time study method and (2) estimate the amount of harvesting logging residue at the landing. The productivities of the CTL and WT systems were 1.45 and 2.99 oven-dried tons (odt)/productive machine hour (PMH), at a cost of 86.81 and 45.41 USD/odt, respectively. In the WT system, the amount of logging residue (2.1 odt/ha) collected at the landing was approximately four-times larger than that of the CTL system (0.5 odt/ha). Our results suggested that the WT system is a less expensive and more suitable system when there are markets demanding logs and biomass, whereas the CTL system remains a less expensive option for stem-only harvesting. Furthermore, these results are important for estimating the economic and environmental amount of residue that could be potentially recovered and utilized from the forest types included in the study.

Research on sustainable and high-efficiency energy devices has recently emerged as an important global issue. These devices are now moving beyond the form of a bulk, rigid platform to a portable, flexible/stretchable format that is easily available in our daily lives. Similar to the development of an active layer for the production of next-generation energy devices, the fabrication of flexible/stretchable electrodes for the easy flow of electrons is also very important. Silver nanowire electrodes have high electronic conductivity even in a flexible/stretchable state due to their high aspect ratio and percolation network structures compared to conventional electrodes. Herein, we summarize the research in the field of flexible/stretchable electronics on energy devices fabricated using silver nanowires as the electrodes. Additionally, for a systematic presentation of the current research trends, this review classifies the surveyed research efforts into the categories of energy production, storage, and consumption.

This review focuses on the state of research on the microbial resources of Dokdo, Korea, as a strategy for securing national microbial resources. In the Korean peninsula, studies aimed at securing microbial resources are carried out across diverse natural environments, especially in the Dokdo islands. Until 2017, a total of 61 novel microbial genera, species, or newly recorded strains have been reported. Among these, 10 new taxa have had their whole genome sequenced and published, in order to find novel useful genes. Additionally, there have been multiple reports of bacteria with novel characteristics, including promoting plant growth or inducing systemic resistance in plants, calcite-forming ability, electrical activation, and production of novel enzymes. Furthermore, fundamental studies on microbial communities help to secure and define microbial resources in the Dokdo islands. This study will propose several tactics, based on ecological principles, for securing more microbial resources to cope with the current increase in international competition for biological resources.

In Korea, mitigation measures for traffic noise at schools are implemented during urban planning to meet the acceptable level (less than 65 dBA at a building facade) stipulated by the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). Meanwhile, traffic noise at schools is managed to satisfy the acceptable level (less than 55 dBA in a classroom with open windows) indicated by the School Health Act (SHA). This variation indicates the possibility to exceed the acceptable SHA level for EIA-approved schools if noise reduction through open windows is less than 10 dBA. Thus, this study carried out onsite measurements for noise reduction through classrooms’ open windows at 19 schools to suggest the appropriate EIA level to meet the acceptable SHA level. The building dispositions were categorized into four types as; (1) Parallel disposition between road and classroom (P type), (2) Perpendicular disposition between road and classroom (V type), (3) Cross-sectional disposition between road and classroom (PV type), and (4) Parallel disposition between road and hallway (H type). The results showed different noise reduction through open windows according to the type of building dispositions in the order of H (16.9 dBA), V (9.2 dBA), PV (8.4 dBA), and P (6.7 dBA) types, attributed to the change in incidence angles between the road and open windows, confirmed by measurements using a speaker. In conclusion, the acceptable noise level on SHA could be exceeded especially for the P, PV, and V types, indicating the need for different noise mitigation measures according to building dispositions.

Atherosclerotic plaques within the vasculature may eventually lead to heart failure. Currently, cardiac stenting is the most effective and least invasive approach to treat this disease. However, in-stent restenosis is a complex chronic side effect of stenting treatment. This study used coronary stents coated with stem cells secreting angiogenic growth factors via an inducible genome-editing system to reduce stent restenosis and induce re-endothelialization within the artery. The characteristics of the cells and their adhesion properties on the stents were confirmed, and the stents were transplanted into a swine model to evaluate restenosis and the potential therapeutic use of stents with stem cells. Restenosis was evaluated using optical coherence tomography (OCT), microcomputed tomography (mCT) and angiography, and re-endothelialization was evaluated by immunostaining after cardiac stent treatment. Compared to a bare metal stent (BMS) or a parental umbilical cord blood-derived mesenchymal stem cell (UCB-MSC)-coated stent, the stents with stem cells capable of the controlled release of hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) successfully reduced restenosis within the stent and induced natural re-endothelialization. Furthermore, UCB-MSCs exhibited the ability to differentiate into endothelial cells in Matrigel, and HGF and VEGF improved this differentiation. Our study indicates that stents coated with UCB-MSCs secreting VEGF/HGF reduce the restenosis side effects of cardiac stenting with improved re-endothelialization.

Based on its outstanding mechanical, thermal, and chemical properties, a Polyimide (PI) is useful in a wide range of applications. Its usage in biomedicine is drawing great attention owing to the recent confirmation of the biocompatibility of various PIs. However, the conventional patterning of a PI, based on photolithographic methods, which is expensive and time-consuming, hampers the rapid advancement of research-oriented fields that require frequent design changes. To resolve this problem, we introduce the method of the monolithic digital patterning of PI up to the quasi-three-dimensional (3D) structures at the microscale resolution by laser-induced jetting of highly porous Laser-induced graphene (LIG) from the PI matrix. Pyrolytic jetting of the LIG is dependent not only on the laser-induced temperature but also on its temporal and spatial gradients. However, the surfaces of the remaining PI can be exceptionally smooth at the optimum laser condition, comparable to the pristine surface at the microscopic level, as confirmed by Raman spectroscopy and Atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurements. On-demand microfluidic channels and multilevel imprinting molds are created in a single step using the proposed method as a proof-of-concept, substantiating its potential application in relevant research.

In Korean residential buildings, floor impact sounds were reduced over the past few decades mainly through a floating floor system. However, ceiling constructions for impact sound reduction have not been applied actively because of a lack of useful information. This study focuses on the effects of wall-to-wall supported ceilings (WSC), which are designed with construction discontinuities between concrete slabs and ceilings, and the damping caused by porous absorbers for impact sound insulation. To examine the impact sound insulation according to ceiling conditions, measurements were performed in 25 floor–ceiling assemblies. The results indicate that ceiling treatment is mostly useful in reducing the floor impact sound. The floor impact sound owing to the WSC decreased by 2–7 dB and 2–8 dB in terms of the single number quantity for the tapping machine and rubber balls, respectively, compared with representative existing housing constructions wherein ceilings were attached on wooden sticks. Furthermore, the reduction effect of the WSC appeared to be more profound when it was applied to the floor–ceiling assembly with poor impact sound insulation. Thus, the WSC can be used to enhance the impact of sound insulation of existing housings without major repairs of floor structural layers.

Spatial Micro‐Water Manipulation An octopus with homogeneously soft structure can easily hide in rocks, where an athlete can throw javelin in precisely controlled manner thanks to the articular structure. Nature designed these distinctive structures by adjusting the amount of water inside. Future electronics are expected to develop into wearable forms, and an adequate stretchability is required for the forthcoming wearable electronics considering various motions occurring in human body. Along with stretchability, transparency can increase both the functionality and esthetic features in future wearable electronics. In this study, we demonstrate, for the first time, a highly stretchable and transparent electromagnetic interference shielding layer for wearable electronic applications with silver nanowire percolation network on elastic poly(dimethylsiloxane) substrate. The proposed stretchable and transparent electromagnetic interference shielding layer shows a high electromagnetic wave shielding effectiveness even under a high tensile strain condition. It is expected for the silver nanowire percolation network-based electromagnetic interference shielding layer to be beyond the conventional electromagnetic interference shielding materials and to broaden its application range to various fields that require optical transparency or nonplanar surface environment, such as biological system, human skin, and wearable electronics.

The development of hydrothermal growth enabled facile growth of ZnO nanowire over a large area at mild environments, yet its usage in actual electronic devices has been restricted due to poor spatial selectivity in the growth and a difficulty in the integration to other components. We introduce a local thermochemical growth of ZnO nanowire branches on Ag nanowire backbone percolation networks by electrical current induced local resistive heating in liquid environment for easy fabrication of metal–semiconductor hierarchical nanowire structure. Through vacuum filtration transfer and laser ablation process, patterned conductive network composed of ZnO nanoparticle functionalized Ag nanowire percolation network was prepared as a conductive network for localized resistive heating. Upon the application of proper bias voltage, highly localized temperature field was generated in the vicinity of the patterned Ag nanowire network heater to induce the selective growth of ZnO nanowire from the Ag nanowire backbone. Objectives The objective of this review is to propose an appropriate course of action for improving the guidelines followed by food handlers for control of infection. For this purpose, previous epidemiological reports related to acute gastroenteritis in food service businesses mediated by food handlers were intensively analyzed. Methods Relevant studies were identified in international databases. We selected eligible papers reporting foodborne infectious disease outbreaks. Among primary literature collection, the abstract of each article was investigated to find cases that absolutely identified a causative factor to be food handlers' inappropriate infection control and the taxon of causative microbial agents by epidemiological methodologies. Information about the sites (type of food business) where the outbreaks occurred was investigated. Results A wide variety of causative microbial agents has been investigated, using several epidemiological methods. These agents have shown diverse propagation pathways based on their own molecular pathogenesis, physiology, taxonomy, and etiology. Conclusion Depending on etiology, transmission, propagation, and microbiological traits, we can predict the transmission characteristics of pathogens in food preparation areas. The infected food workers have a somewhat different ecological place in infection epidemiology as compared to the general population. However, the current Korean Food Safety Act cannot propose detailed guidelines. Therefore, different methodologies have to be made available to prevent further infections.

Herein, a new type of smart glass fabricated by using a thermoswtichable salt hydrate with a microheater is reported. The supersaturated sodium hydrate solution is clear and transparent at the liquid, however, it turns solid and opaque state after mechanical impact. The nanomaterial-based transparent micro heater is suitable for flexible applications and it consumes low electrical energy due to its high electrical conductivity and high-efficiency of electrothermal effect. Considering the solubility of the sodium acetate in water and chemical properties such as water of crystallization, a phase transition from the liquid state to solid occurs in few seconds with rapid crystal growth of sodium acetate trihydrate. Therefore, it quickly blocks an intense sunlight and provides privacy protection. In reverse, the phase transition from the solid-state to the liquid is simply controllable within a few minutes by the microheater. Finally, we demonstrate a practical application of mechano-thermo-chromic (MTC) device by constructing a system, which operates by an external environment condition such as intense UV light.

We demonstrated a reversible transparency-changing smart glass that can be operated by mechanical impacts and heat., Active control of transparency/color is the key to many functional optoelectric devices. Applying an electric field to an electrochromic or liquid crystal material is the typical approach for optical property control. In contrast to the conventional electrochromic method, we developed a new concept of smart glass using new driving mechanisms (based on mechanical stimulus and thermal energy) to control optical properties. This mechano-thermo-chromic smart glass device with an integrated transparent microheater uses a sodium acetate solution, which shows a unique marked optical property change under mechanical impact (mechanochromic) and heat (thermochromic). Such mechano-thermo-chromic devices may provide a useful approach in future smart window applications that could be operated by external environment conditions.

Human umbilical cord blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hUCB-MSCs) exhibit potency for the regeneration of infarcted hearts. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is capable of inducing angiogenesis and can boost stem cell-based therapeutic effects. However, high levels of VEGF can cause abnormal blood vessel growth and hemangiomas. Thus, a controllable system to induce therapeutic levels of VEGF is required for cell therapy. We generated an inducible VEGF-secreting stem cell (VEGF/hUCB-MSC) that controls the expression of VEGF and tested the therapeutic efficacy in rat myocardial infarction (MI) model to apply functional stem cells to MI. To introduce the inducible VEGF gene cassette into a safe harbor site of the hUCB-MSC chromosome, the transcription activator-like effector nucleases system was used. After confirming the integration of the cassette into the locus, VEGF secretion in physiological concentration from VEGF/hUCB-MSCs after doxycycline (Dox) induction was proved in conditioned media. VEGF secretion was detected in mice implanted with VEGF/hUCB-MSCs grown via a cell sheet system. Vessel formation was induced in mice transplanted with Matrigel containing VEGF/hUCB-MSCs treated with Dox. Moreover, seeding of the VEGF/hUCB-MSCs onto the cardiac patch significantly improved the left ventricle ejection fraction and fractional shortening in a rat MI model upon VEGF induction. Induced VEGF/hUCB-MSC patches significantly decreased the MI size and fibrosis and increased muscle thickness, suggesting improved survival of cardiomyocytes and protection from MI damage. Two dimensional (2D) p-MoTe2 channel-based nonvolatile memory transistors with ferroelectric P(VDF-TrFE) polymer has been studied using a bottom-gate device architecture, which is introduced to dramatically reduce both of the switching and drain voltages to minimum 8 V and 10 mV, respectively. In fact, most of 2D-channel ferroelectric FETs with the same P(VDF-TrFE) polymer have used top-gate architectures, utilizing high switching pulse voltages over 20–25 V due to the existence of dead layer, which is unavoidably formed at the interface between P(VDF-TrFE) and thermal-deposited Al top gate. Key effects to realize such a low 8–13 V switching thus originate from the bottom-gate architecture. On the one hand, keys to obtain the low operation/drain voltage come from anneal-free Ohmic contact which is obtained using H2O2 solution. Thanks to the low operation voltages of 10 mV, consuming power in the nonvolatile FETs can be minimized to ~a few pW for OFF/Erase state and ~a few hundred pW for ON/Program although it eventually becomes ~nW and ~30 nW for OFF and ON states in a practical circuit operation to switch organic light emitting diodes. Our approaches of bottom-gate architecture and H2O2 contact nicely work even for transparent nonvolatile memory FET.
