- Abstract

Palabras clave: Hugo Blair, Manuel Casamada, bello, sublime, estética Abstract In early nineteenth century, the writers of the capital of Spain were divided into two factions: one conservative and one progressive. These ideological positions were transferred to literature. The progressives used as flag a rhetorical text of the Scottish preacher Hugh Blair (1718-1800), the conservatives, a text of the French esthete Charles Batteux (1713-1780). Blair’s use represents one route of introduction of liberal English thought and the popularization of Edmund Burke, work of particular interest to the opposition between the beautiful and the sublime. Until then, the concepts of beauty and the sublime understood as linked concepts. In Catalonia, Blair's influence is seen in the work of the Liberal priest Manuel Casamada (1772-1841) and in the speech, unedited, who spoke at the Real Acadèmia de Bones Lletres de Barcelona(1837), which has been included, transcribed and annotated, in this article. Key words: Hugh Blair, Manuel Casamada, beautiful, sublime, aesthetic

One of the essential elements of the muchadmired accommodation of the Jesuits was their dedication to the study of the Chinese language. However, this orientation is not exclusively to the Jesuits. The other religious orders also showed the same orientation from the first moment. Although following the imperial guidelines of Nebrija evangelization should be done in Spanish, the friars who left for America and Asia were focused from the first moment to learn the local languages. Following the line of sixteenthcentury Mexican dictionaries and languages, the translation of texts between Spanish and Chinese already had a clear representation in the Philippine Islands with the work of Juan Cobo. Throughout the XVII several vocabularies, grammars and language arts would appear while the work of the Dominican Domingo Fernández de Navarrete would include a very brief dictionary. This interest of mendicants by the local languages would culminate in the work of the Dominican Francisco Varo. Starting from the original sources —manuscripts and printed— of the seventeenth century, this communication will analyze in detail the linguistic accommodation of the mendicant orders with special emphasis on the Franciscans and the Dominicans.

- Abstract
In adults, the possibility to control stressors has been deeply studied and induces a protective effect in front of the negative consequences of stress. However, the stress controllability effects in early life have not been extensively studied. In the present work the endocrine and behavioral effects of stressor controllability during the adolescent period have been studied. Subjects were exposed to repeated stress (electric foot-shock) in the adolescence (approximately from day 33 to 57) during 8 sessions. Sprague Dawley male rats were divided into three experimental groups: (i) control (naive) group that was exposed to a shuttle-box without any shock or specific stimuli; (ii) master (controllable) group, exposed to foot-shock with the possibility to avoid/escape in a two-way active avoidance task in a shuttle-box, and (iii) yoked (uncontrollable) group, exposed exactly to the same shocks than master group but their behavior was not contingent on the end of shocks. Days or weeks after, the animals were exposed to different stressors or behavioral tests to evaluate the short- and long-term impact of stress. In response to repeated exposure to shocks during adolescence, yoked subjects showed a higher endocrine response than master ones in the last session of stress, indicating that stress controllability is able to buffer the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis response (ACTH). Considering the lack of changes in body-weight, food intake and adrenal and thymus weight, the adolescent treatment was not a high intensity stressor, not affecting either master or yoked rats. In the short-term, yoked subjects showed a higher hypoactivity in novel environments, which reflects an increase in the cognitive generalization of fear to other contexts not related to the context previously associated with the shocks. In the long-term

- Abstract

The entry of the Manchus in the Chinese Empire introduced a new subject matter into the works about China that had been circulating in Europe until that time. In the second half of the XVII century, the Jesuits inundated the European scene with different publications centred on this historical event. In Spain, there were also texts that covered the changes in the Chinese dynasty right from the start. Specifically, information about the fall of the Ming dynasty basically came from three sources: the text by Bishop Juan de Palafox y Mendoza, Historia de la conquista de China por el Tártaro (1670, posthumous edition); the Hechos de la Orden de Predicadores en el Imperio de China (1667), by the Dominican Victorio Riccio, and the news collected by another Dominican, Fernández de Navarrete, in his Tratados históricos, políticos, éticos y religiosos de la monarquía de China (1676). The objective of this essay is to present these three authors and their works, analysing the information that they offer about the entry of the Manchus in China and the relation between them.

In a previous study, a new ceramic material (Bioeutectic ® ), prepared by slow solidification through the eutectic temperature-composition region of the wollastonite-tricalcium phosphate system, was found to be bioactive in static-simulated body fluid. The eutectic material reacts by dissolving the pseudowollastonite phase and forming a hydroxyapatite-like porous structure by a pseudomorphic transformation of the tricalcium phosphate lamellae, which in turn mimics porous bone. Later, a hydroxyapatite-like layer is formed by precipitation on the surface of the material. In the present study, the bioactivity of the Bioeutectic® material was assessed in dynamic simulated body fluid in order to improve the ingrowth of new bone into implants (osteointegration). Samples of the material were soaked for 2 weeks in a dynamic simulated body fluid (1 mL/min) at 37°C. The experiment showed that there is no precipitation of hydroxyapatite-like layer on the surface of a the material. Otherwise, a complete transformation of the eutectic material takes place, giving rise to a hydroxyapatite artificial porous bone. The dynamic model used in this study may be better than the usual static immersion model in imitating the physiological condition of bone-like apatite formation.

The percentages of patients with positive nodes in the ELD and LLD groups were 35% and 5.47%, respectively (p.001). The overall complication rate at 90 days was 35.5% (33 patients). In the ELD group, 12 patients (60%) had complications, compared with 21 patients (28.8%) in the LLD group (p=.016), with no significant differences in severity according to the Clavien scale (p=.73).In our series, the detection of metastatic nodes was significantly greater with ELD. ELD increases the number of complications, with no differences compared with LLD in severity according to the modified Clavien scale.

The work examines the influence of the microstructure on the in vitro bioactivity of two glass-ceramics with the same chemical composition in the SiO 2 –CaO system. Ceramizing a glass, via powder technology route (W1), and by sol–gel method (W2), formed two glass-ceramics composed of the same crystalline phases, but differed in microstructure. Both glass-ceramics were soaked in simulated body fluid up to 4 weeks using the same conditions. An hydroxyapatite (HA)-like layer formed on the surfaces of both samples but a different formation rates yielded differences in the microstructure. The W2 glass-ceramic showed faster HA-like formation because its smaller crystalline grains dissolved more readily. In addition, the thicker glassy phase at the grain boundaries facilitated a faster formation of silanol groups on the surface of the amorphous SiO 2 interlayer, a reaction that is considered to be a prerequisite for HA-like formation. Comparison of glass-ceramics synthesized by the two preparation methods was carried out. The interfacial reaction product was examined by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Both instruments were fitted with energy-dispersive X-ray analyzers. Additional changes in ionic concentration, using inductively couple plasma atomic emission spectroscopy, were determined.

This is an open access article distributed under the Creative Commons Attribution License which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited. (CC BY 4.0). Cushioning is an important aspect in hydraulic cylinder performance. The piston has to be decelerated before it strikes the end cap in order to avoid stresses in the cylinder components and reduce vibration that can be transmitted to the machine. One of the least-studied methods is internal cushioning by grooves in the piston. In this method, the flow is throttled with adequately designed grooves when the piston reaches the outlet port position. The purpose of the present work is to present a method to estimate the pressure-drop coefficients for a certain design of piston grooves in order to provide a model to develop a dynamic system simulation of the cushion system. The method is based on a computational fluid dynamic simulation of flow through piston grooves to the outlet port for each piston’s static position. The results are compared with experimental measurements, and a correction, based on Reynolds number, is proposed. Good agreement, below 16%, was obtained for all the positions but particularly for the last grooves, for which the numerical result’s deviation to the experimental measurements was less than 10%. In general, the numerical simulation tended to underestimate the pressure drop for the first grooves and overestimate the calculation for the last grooves.

- Abstract

- Abstract
Los efectos protectores del MPH se observan no solo a nivel fisiológico sino también conductual en una tare, Previous studies evidenced in rats that amphetamine administration immediately after the exposure to different stressors decreases the activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA), as well as the hyperglycemia (index of activation of the sympathetic medullary adrenal axis) caused by exposure to stress. The effect is located at the CNS level. The purposes of the present Thesis have been to extend the study of the interaction between stress and amphetamine and specially to demonstrate that methylphenidate (MPH), the most used stimulant in the treatment of the attention deficit- hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), is also able to reduce, at relevant therapeutic doses, the biological and behavioral response to emotional stress. The studies have been conducted in male adult rats (2-3 months of age), except in one experiment aimed to compare the effects of MPH in young and adult animals. Results with amphetamine indicate, in agreement with previous data, that the drug reduces in a dose-dependent way, the physiological response to the forced swim. But, moreover, this negative interaction between both stimuli also acts in the opposite manner, in a way that the exposure to stress reduces the HPA activation caused by amphetamine. In a series of experiments conducted with MPH we have demonstrated that the drug by itself does not modify the HPA axis, but, in the same way than amphetamine, is able to reduce the physiological response to stress (forced swim) when the drug is given immediately before stress. The effect is evidenced at the CNS level (CRF gene expression, the main factor that regulates the HPA axis), is observed in both young and adult animals and it is also detected when the drug is administered 30 min before exposure to stress. The protective effects of MPH are observed not only at the physiological level but also at the behavioral level in a two-way active avoidance/escape task, with an improvement in the learning and with lower levels of contextual fea

- Abstract
Our studies were conducted in adult male Sprague-Dawley rats, distributed into four groups in function of cocaine injection and exposure to immobilization (IMO). Animals were injected with saline or cocaine (30 mg/kg, ip) immediately before 1 h of IMO. Results indicated that exposure to IMO induced a prolonged increase in plasma ACTH and corticosterone levels, whereas cocaine only increased corticosterone with a less potent magnitude. Cocaine administration decreased ACTH levels (but not corticosterone) only at the end of IMO, reflecting a mild negative synergism. The long-term anorectic effects of IMO were partially blocked by cocaine injection (negative synergism) which itself also decreased food intake but only transiently and in non-stressed animals. Both IMO and cocaine reduced body-weight gain, although the decrease in weight gain induced by cocaine was delayed more in time and not explained by changes in food intake. The long-term anhedonic-like effects of IMO (measured by the intake of saccharine solutions) were not affected by cocaine administration that itself had no effect. Exposure to IMO induced, twenty-four hours later, an anxiogenic-like effect in the EPM test, accompanied by a decrease in motor activity. Here again cocaine was not able to modify this behaviour alone or concomitantly with IMO. The active behavior in the FST (struggling) was not affected neither by cocaine nor by IMO, but IMO modestly increased mild swimming in non-cocaine injected animals. IMO was able to induce a sensitization of the HPA axis in response to two different heterotypic stressors, although the effects of cocaine in sensitization were not consistent. The exposure to IMO produced an anxiogenic-like effect in the ASR test, effect that vanished after twenty-four hours, and cocaine injectio

A 33-year-old woman sought medical attention for a painful swelling of the left ankle. Plain radiographs revealed an osteolytic lesion involving the left distal tibia. An excisional biopsy provided the diagnosis of leiomyosarcoma in the tibia. A staging work-up was performed and an abdominal CT showed 4 liver hypodense lesions in both lobes with peripheral contrast enhancement. A liver biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of epithelioid hemangioendothelioma of the liver. No association between these two entities has been described before. This case introduces the importance of the pathological confirmation of apparent metastatic lesions in low grade sarcomas and provides a review of the literature of both tumours.

- Abstract

Background Study results demonstrated that IFN augments BEV activity and improves median PFS in pts with mRCC. Thus, combination BEV + IFN is a standard first-line treatment option for mRCC. Combining BEV with the mTOR inhibitor EVE may be an efficacious and well-tolerated treatment option. The open-label, phase II RECORD-2 trial compared first-line EVE + BEV and IFN + BEV in mRCC. Patients and methods: Therapy-naive pts with clear cell mRCC and prior nephrectomy were randomized 1:1 to BEV 10 mg/kg IV every 2 weeks with either EVE 10 mg oral daily or IFN (9 MIU SC 3 times/week, if tolerated). Tumour assessments were every 12 weeks. Primary objective was treatment effect on progression-free survival (PFS) per central review based on an estimate of the chance of a subsequent phase III trial success (50% threshold for phase II success). Results In EVE + BEV (n = 182) and IFN + BEV (n = 183) arms, median age was 60/60 years, 76/72% of pts were men, MSKCC risk was favourable/intermediate/poor in 36/57/7% and 36/57/7% of pts, and 43/46% of pts had >2 organs involved, respectively. For EVE + BEV and IFN + BEV, median treatment duration was 8.5/8.3 months, respectively; 23/26% of pts discontinued due to AEs. In EVE + BEV and IFN + BEV arms, median PFS by central review was 9.3/10.0 months (HRIFN/EVE, 0.91; 95% CI, 0.69-1.19; P =0.485), respectively; probability of subsequent phase III success was 5.1%. Results of central and local PFS analysis were consistent. Objective response rate was 27/28% in EVE + BEV and IFN + BEV arms, respectively. Median overall survival (OS) was not reached in the EVE + BEV arm and was 25.9 months (95% CI: 21.1, 30.2) in the IFN + BEV arm. Most frequent AEs (%) were stomatitis (63), proteinuria (49), diarrhoea (39), hypertension (38), and epistaxis (35) in EVE + BEV arm and decreased appetite (45), fatigue (41), proteinuria (37), and pyrexia (35) in IFN + BEV arm. Conclusions In RECORD-2, PFS and tolerability were similar for first-line EVE + BEV and IFN + BEV. Final OS analysis will occur after 2-year follow-up. Disclosure A. Introduction Sunitinib is a standard treatment for kidney cancer, however in some patients response is lacking. Molecular predictors of outcome could deeply impact patient care. Methods We conducted an observational, prospective study in 15 institutions members of the Spanish Oncology Genitourinary Group (SOGUG). Inclusion criteria were patients with confirmed advanced clear cell renal cell carcinoma with no prior treatment, planned to receive sunitinib according to local practice. From paraffin embedded tumor samples a Tissue MicroArray (TMA) was constructed and evaluated independently by two pathologists, also blinded to clinical data. Expression of Carbonic Anhydrase IX, P-glicoprotein, Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF), VEGF-Receptor 1,2 and 3 (VEGFR1,2 and 3), Platelet-Derived Growth Factor Receptor (PDGFR-Beta), Hypoxia-Inducible Factor 2 alpha (HIF2α) and Von Hippel-Lindau protein (pVHL) was assessed. In addition the presence of VHL gene mutations was studied. Results 101 patients were recruited from 2007 to 2010. TMA was constructed from 69 tumor samples. In multivariable analysis, HIF2α (HR 0.17 (0.05-0.64) p = 0.0083) and PDGFRβ (HR 0.042 (0.003-0.70) p = 0.028) overexpression correlated with progressive disease (PD) as best response. A similar trend in PFS and OS was observed for HIF-alfa but did not reach statistical significance. Progression free survival (PFS) was longer in cases with high VEGFR3 expression (HR 0.42 (0.21-0.83) p = 0.013). Interestingly, low levels of this protein strongly correlated (r = -0.441 P = 0.0003) with the presence of a germline SNP (VEGFR3 rs307826) that has been previously identified as a sunitinib resistance predictor by our group. Finally overexpression of VEGF (HR 4.6 (1.5-13.6), p= 0.0063), and VEGFR1 (HR 6.2 (1.2-32.2) p = 0.031) were associated with poor overall survival (OS). VHL gene alterations could only be determined in 30 cases, with 20 (66%) presenting a pathological mutation. No association with outcome could be established. Conclusion Expression of some proteins involved in neoangiogenesis pathway could play a role in sunitinib sensitivity and resistance. A significant association between low expression of VEGFR3 and one SNP in such gene, both correlated with poor outcome, deserves further investigation. This study has given evaluation of a new pneumallergen diagnostic test CIS Allergen Screen I in comparison with Pharmacia Cap System and intradermal skin test. Five allergens (Mite (DPT) D1, Mite (DF) D2, Cat E1, Dog E2, Orchard grass G3) have been studied with in vitro tests (CIS Allergen Screen I Cap System) and the results obtained gave on patient to patient comparison a sensitivity of 91%, a specificity of 100% and on allergen comparison a sensitivity of 84%, a specificity of 99% and an accuracy of 93%. Compared with intradermal skin test for two allergens (Mite (DT) D1 and Orchard grass G3), CIS Allergen Screen I have good results to G3 but less specificity and sensitivity to D1. These results could be to depend on different standardisation between allergen extracts especially for Mite.
