The recent COVID-19 pandemic created an unpredictable environment regarding the safety operations of sport and recreation organizations. This study was designed to examine how safety climate and organizational innovativeness could promote preferred organizational behavior outcomes in college campus sport and recreation centers. A total of 227 sport and recreation employees were recruited through the National Intramural and Recreational Sports Association. With the collected data, we employed structural equation modeling to assess the research hypotheses. The results indicated that safety climate and innovativeness positively influenced job engagement, therefore leading to enhanced safety compliance and employee innovativeness, which ultimately resulted in higher levels of organizational performance. Peer safety compliance was also found to be a moderator in the relationship between job engagement and safety compliance. Safety literature has traditionally focused on identifying and managing risk factors that lead to safety outcomes (e.g., injuries, accidents, death) at work. The current study takes a new perspective on employee safety and proposes that safety‐related experience has more general work implications. Drawing on theories of stress coping and workplace anxiety, we test a mechanism on how employees' daily experiences of safety threats are related to their work behavior via negative emotional reactions. Specifically, we focus on employees' experiences of safety violations on the way to work and at work during the ongoing struggles with COVID‐19. Our daily diary study (Level 1 N = 778, Level 2 N = 84; office workers in South Korea) shows that experiencing safety violations during the daily commute and at work is associated with increased state health anxiety at work, which then translates into work withdrawal on that day. Furthermore, we introduce organizational safety climate as an important mitigating factor of this stress‐coping process, as such a climate can emphasize management's commitment to safety. This study highlights the positive impact of a stock market listing on workplace safety. We find that workplace injuries in publicly listed firms are lower than those in comparable private firms, and this effect relates to heightened monitoring by the media and regulators. The media pays more attention to public firms' safety issues than to those of private firms, and the reduced media scrutiny due to local newspaper closures leads to greater increases in injuries in public firms. Ultraviolet C (UV-C) light technology employs a particular wavelength within the ultraviolet spectrum to deactivate microorganisms, utilizing radiation as its method. UV-C light possesses germicidal properties, effectively disrupting the DNA of microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses and various pathogens, thereby impeding their ability to replicate and induce illness. Additionally, UV-C could enhance the production of phytochemicals and prevent contamination in agricultural applications. However, overexposure to UV-C can cause safety issues, especially for operators handling its utilization in germicidal or sterilization applications. This study investigated the destructive effects of UV-C light on the morphology and chlorophyll content of lettuces exposed to various durations, aiming to assess the risks associated with prolonged exposure. The results showed that prolonged UV-C exposure affects morphological and chlorophyll content changes. The most damaging effect on lettuce morphology and chlorophyll content was found in the 2 h of UV-C exposure treatment. In the 2 h of UV-C exposure treatment, lettuce length was reduced from 6.01 ± 0.80 cm on day 2 to 5.55 ± 0.78 cm on day 3. The lowest fresh weight of lettuce was also found at 2 h of UV-C exposure treatment (4.32 ± 0.94 gr). In addition, the lowest total lettuce stomata aperture was found in 2 h of UV-C treatment (41 units). Furthermore, on day 4, after 2 h of UV-C exposure treatments, the chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b and total chlorophyll content in lettuces were found to be 1.59 ± 0.02 mg g−1 FW, 0.93 ± 0.02 mg g−1 FW and 2.52 ± 0.04 mg g−1 FW, respectively. Therefore, the most destructive effect of UV-C was found during 2 h of UV-C exposure treatment. These findings indicate the dangers of long-term UV-C exposure to lettuce. With the rapid development and application of hydrogen in the chemical and energy industry, the safety of hydrogen industrial facilities has been widely concerned. In this study, the safety of hydrogen accidently released from a high-pressure tube storage system (tube diameter:10 mm, storage tank volume:4 L) was explored experimentally. The combustion behavior of the transient hydrogen jet and explosion overpressure under self-ignition and electric spark induction were investigated. Besides, the explosion overpressure and jet flame evolution laws of the hydrogen cloud induced by the release of unsteady turbulent hydrogen jets into the open environment were analyzed. The results revealed that the peak value of hydrogen self-ignition explosion overpressure was higher than that of electric spark ignition overpressure. Compared with spark ignition, hydrogen self-ignition flame structures can be maintained for longer time. However, spark ignition at low release pressures was more likely to cause hydrogen ignition and explosion compared to self-ignition. Finally, the combustion behavior and potential hazards of the ignited free transient hydrogen jet under different ignition modes were analyzed. Ensuring workplace safety for healthcare workers is vital considering the important role they play in various societies which is to save life. Healthcare workers face different risks when performing tasks in various departments within hospitals, hence there is a need to assess work safety analysis procedures among healthcare workers. As a result, this study aims to assess the effectiveness of work safety analysis procedures among healthcare workers at Muvonde and Driefontein Sanatorium rural hospitals in Chirumanzu district. The research applied the descriptive cross-sectional design, combining quantitative and qualitative data collection methods. A questionnaire with both closed and open ended questionnaire was used for data collection among 109 healthcare workers at Muvonde hospital and 68 healthcare workers at Driefontein Sanatorium hospital. Secondary data sources, observations and interviews were also included as data collection methods. Quantitative data collected during the study was analysed using SPSS version 25. Braun and Clarke (2006)'s six phase framework was applied for qualitative data analysis. Ethical approval form was obtained from the District Medical Officer and Midlands State University. Findings of the study indicated that risks identified at Muvonde and Driefontein Sanatorium rural hospitals are classified as ergonomic, physical, chemical, psychosocial and biological risks. Respondents specified that these risks occur as a result of inadequate equipment, poor training, negative safety behaviour, poor management and pressure due to high workload. Safety inspection, safety workshops and monitoring of worker's safety behaviour were mentioned as measures to manage risks. However, the strengths and weaknesses of the current safety procedures need to be assessed to highlight areas for improvement to reduce occurrence of risks within the hospitals. In the era of Industry 5.0, there is a significant gap in addressing ergonomic risks and imprecise task times in manufacturing systems. This study aims to fill this gap by extending the ergonomic assembly line balancing problem with worker assignment. It employs a novel two-phase framework combining a constructive heuristic for feasibility with a unique ergonomic assessment method developed through a fuzzy expert system. Validated using 96 synthesized numerical instances, the proposed method addresses the scarcity of fuzzy and ergonomic-oriented data in benchmarks. Then, computational results are thoroughly analyzed to evaluate the method’s performance and identify potential areas for further research. The proposed optimization method provided high-quality solutions with a majority demonstrating low ergonomic risk and high worker safety, contributing to an overall improvement in ergonomic conditions. The construction industry substantially contributes to the economic growth of a country. However, it records a large number of workplace injuries and fatalities annually due to its hesitant adoption of automated safety monitoring systems. To address this critical concern, this study presents a real-time monitoring approach that uses the Internet of Things and ensemble learning. This study leverages wearable sensor technology, such as photoplethysmography and electroencephalography sensors, to continuously track the physiological parameters of construction workers. The sensor data is processed using an ensemble learning approach called the ChronoEnsemble Fatigue Analysis System (CEFAS), comprising deep autoregressive and temporal fusion transformer models, to accurately predict potential physical and mental fatigue. Comprehensive evaluation metrics, including mean square error, mean absolute scaled error, and symmetric mean absolute percentage error, demonstrated the superior prediction accuracy and reliability of the proposed model compared to standalone models. The ensemble learning model exhibited remarkable precision in predicting physical and mental fatigue, as evidenced by the mean square errors of 0.0008 and 0.0033, respectively. Objective: This study evaluates the level of radiation safety awareness and adherence to protective practices among pregnant female radiographers in the United Arab Emirates, aiming to identify gaps and develop targeted interventions for enhancing occupational safety. Methods: Employing a cross-sectional design, the study surveyed 133 female radiographers using a self-developed questionnaire covering demographics, awareness and knowledge, workplace practices, communication, and satisfaction. Results: The survey showed high awareness among radiographers, with 97% acknowledging radiation risks during pregnancy, although 42.9% had not received formal training. Concerns over long-term health effects were significant, with 66.2% of participants worried about potential impacts. Despite these concerns, 83.5% had been informed about radiation risks and protective measures, indicating active information provision in many workplaces. However, inconsistencies in information dissemination across different work settings were noted. Conclusions: The findings highlight the need for standardized radiation safety protocols for pregnant radiographers. The variability in safety training and information dissemination suggests the importance of establishing uniform safety practices. Recommendations include developing comprehensive education and training programs for pregnant radiographers, ensuring open communication for radiation safety and pregnancy-related concerns, and enforcing clear guidelines for workplace accommodations. Drawing on qualitative focus groups and interviews, this paper draws on participatory and relational approaches to explore how prospective and very new workers in their early teens in Canada talk about and navigate workplace safety. We foreground our young participants' discussions and safety management strategies to discuss their shared and sometimes narrow understanding of unsafe work; their mixed, and often limited, experiences of safety training; and the individualized avenues they prioritize to deal with potential and concrete safety issues. Countering our participants' inclination towards individualized solutions, we focus on how these young workers are embedded in relationships with others as well as the material world, including workplace cultures; networks and hierarchies of people; specific materials, time and time pressures; and safety‐related policies. Such a relational lens can in turn guide how we think about fostering workplace safety in ways that challenge more individualized approaches, specifically through recognizing interdependencies that shape how young people think about workplace safety; expanding beyond unidirectional, individualized educational strategies; and favouring shared self‐advocacy, especially with older workers, including through unionization. Introduction: Corporate social responsibility (CSR) practices refer to the deliberate actions and strategies implemented by a company or organization to generate positive outcomes for its stakeholders beyond the sole objective of profit maximization. Internal CSR is a significant management and investment concept within enterprises, such as hospitals, that enhances organizational performance excellence. Objectives: The article aims to trace how hospitals thrive in nurses' job performance by leveraging internal CSR practices. Methods: Cross-sectional design quantitative research through structured questionnaire interviews on 215 nurses in Vietnam. Data collection was conducted from May 2023 to August 2023. Partial least squares structural equation modeling was applied to test the hypotheses. Results: The study has proven that a hospital's internal CSR practices impact nurses' job performance. Income and benefits, human resource training and development, and work-related quality of life directly and significantly impact three dimensions of a nurse's job performance (competence to practice patient care, attitude to performance work, and management and professional development capacity). Connection and trust in the workplace and health and safety at work significantly affect two dimensions of a nurse's job performance (namely, competence to practice patient care and attitude to performance work). Diversity in the workplace impacts nurses' competence in practicing patient care and their management and professional development capacity. Demographic variables did not correlate statistically significantly with dimensions of internal CSR and nurses' job performance. Conclusion: The study presents significant findings on the influence of internal CSR on nurses' job performance within the hospital management theory of an emerging market. The results of the present study contribute to a better understanding of the benefits of hospitals' socially responsible actions and contribute further to resource management in hospitals, especially nursing. If the nursing staff positively perceives the hospital's internal CSR practices, they will be more able to perform their job, impacting the hospital's overall performance. Bearings are essential in machinery. Damage to them can cause financial losses and safety risks at industrial sites. Therefore, it is necessary to design an accurate diagnostic model. Although many bearing fault diagnosis methods have been proposed recently, they still cannot meet the requirements of high-accurate prediction of bearing faults. There are several challenges in this: 1) In practical settings, gathering sufficient and balanced sample data for training diagnostic network models proves challenging. 2) The damage to bearings in real industrial production sites is not singular, and compound faults are also a huge challenge for diagnostic networks. To address these issues, this study introduces a novel fault diagnosis model called EMALKNet that integrates DCGAN with Efficient Multi-Scale Attention (EMAGAN) and RepLKNet-XL, enhancing the detection and analysis of bearing faults in industrial machinery. This model employs EMAGAN to explore the underlying distribution of raw data, thereby enlarging the fault sample pool and enhancing the model's diagnostic capabilities; The large kernel structure of RepLKNet-XL is different from the current mainstream small kernel and has stronger representation extraction ability. Background: Patient safety (PS) is a core competency for registered nurses. However, there is a gap between the PS competence of nursing students and their clinical experience in PS. This study explored the effect of PS competence levels on the occurrence of adverse events (AEs) among nursing master's students in China. Methods: A sequential mixed methods design was used, with a purposive sample across seven colleges. A total of 327 graduate nursing students, aged 22 to 38, participated in the survey, and 15 participated in qualitative interviews. The Health Professional Education in Patient Safety Survey (H-PEPSS) assessed the students' competence levels in PS. The respondents also reported any AEs that they had been involved in over the past year. Results: A total of 78 AEs occurred in the past year, with 17.7% of the participants involved 1 to 3 AEs. The most common AEs were medication administration errors (30.77%) and improper use of medical equipment/supplies (28.20%). Students acquired more competencies from the clinical setting than from the classroom setting. Three competencies learned from classroom settings were associated with clinical AEs: low clinical safety skills [OR = 0.61], inappropriate identify, response to and disclosing AE and close calls [OR = 0.454], and low confidence in working in teams with other health professionals [OR = 2.168]. Qualitative data analysis revealed five themes: recognizing AEs, reducing harm by addressing immediate risks to patients and others involved, promoting safe medication and clinical practice, managing members' authority and team dynamics, and dealing with inter-professional conflict. In the construction industry, most safety culture studies are limited to a single country, with minimal attention to cross-country studies. This limits creating a foundation for a robust framework and reliable safety culture scale. This study addresses this gap by studying safety culture in 10 countries, including those without previous studies. The survey instrument, completed by 311 construction employees, identified seven key factors measuring safety culture, with content and construct validity ensuring the reliability and validity of survey findings. Results indicated that work experience, education level and employment status have significant impacts on employees’ safety culture. Additionally, similarities and differences in these factors across countries were investigated, and the fatalism and optimism factor and the work pressure and priority factor are the most significant contributors to the weakening of safety culture in the construction industry. Background The public order and safety (POS) sector remains susceptible to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) outbreaks, as workplace attendance is typically compulsory and close physical contact is often needed. Here, we report on a SARS-CoV-2 outbreak with an attack rate of 39% (9/23), which occurred between 19 and 29 June 2021 among a cohort of new POS recruits participating in a mandatory 18-week training programme in England. Methods The COVID-OUT (COVID-19 Outbreak investigation to Understand Transmission) study team undertook a multidisciplinary outbreak investigation, including viral surface sampling, workplace environmental assessment, participant viral and antibody testing, and questionnaires, at the two associated training facilities between 5 July and 24 August 2021. Results Environmental factors, such as ventilation, were deemed inadequate in some areas of the workplace, with carbon dioxide (CO2) levels exceeding 1,500 ppm on multiple occasions within naturally ventilated classrooms. Activities during safety training required close contact, with some necessitating physical contact, physical exertion, and shouting. Furthermore, most participants reported having physical contact with colleagues (67%) and more than one close work contact daily (97%). Conclusions Our investigation suggests that site- and activity-specific factors likely contributed to the transmission risks within the POS trainee cohort. Potential interventions for mitigating SARS-CoV-2 transmission in this POS training context could include implementing regular rapid lateral flow testing, optimizing natural ventilation, using portable air cleaning devices in classrooms, and expanding use of well-fitted FFP2/FFP3 respirators during activities where prolonged close physical contact is required. Previous studies have investigated the health hazards caused by exposure to the noise of heavy equipment used at construction sites. Korea's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport operates a registration system for construction machinery, and regular safety inspections are mandatory. Although workers inspecting construction machinery vehicles are exposed to unwanted noise, no noise exposure assessment has been made regarding these workers in Korea. The time-weighted average (TWA) daily average noise exposure level among construction machinery inspectors at 18 inspection centers was 75.3 dB(A). Among the inspection steps, the exhaust gas inspection step was found to exhibit the highest noise exposure level, up to 100 dB(A). In Korea, if the noise level of a workplace exceeds 85 dB(A) as a TWA, workers are required to undergo special medical examinations. This study found that special medical examinations were required for two of the 18 target inspection centers (approximately 115 workers) as the 8-hour TWA noise level exceeded 85 dB(A). Therefore, regular noise exposure assessment and special medical examinations for noise are required to prevent inspectors from developing hearing disorders due to noise exposure. The utilization of machine learning (ML) for rockburst assessment is hindered by an incomplete problem formalization in prior studies, which have focused more on predictive accuracy and less on factors such as explainability and uncertainty quantification. Despite achieving commendable accuracies, practitioners remain apprehensive about real-time implementation due to concerns surrounding transparency and validity, particularly when dealing with challenging or unfamiliar rock samples. This uncertainty may result in arbitrary predictions which are mostly incorrect. Establishing trust in ML applications, particularly in critical domains like rockburst assessment, requires models to provide transparent reasoning, communicate uncertainty, and exercise caution when making assertive predictions with unfamiliar data. This paper addresses these concerns by introducing a novel framework that combines interpretable ML techniques specifically Shapley additive explanation (SHAP), with adaptive conformal prediction (CP), built atop extreme gradient boosting to establish a transparent and reliable predictive framework. The validity of the proposed framework was rigorously assessed using conformal metrics, including marginal coverage, conditional coverage, and average prediction set size. Additionally, the SHAP technique was employed to elucidate explanations for predictions flagged as unreliable through CP. The results justify the framework's high effectiveness in generating valid predictions for rockburst grades, concurrently providing corresponding confidence levels and insights into the underlying mechanisms that drive these predictions. The proposed framework facilitates the identification of unreliable predictions, ensuring that only reliable predictions inform decision-making. This not only enhances user confidence in the predictive model but also contributes to the overall safety of underground engineering projects. Highlights: A framework that combines conformal prediction and interpretable machine learning for rockburst assessment is proposed. The proposed framework guarantees marginal coverage and, in most cases, conditional coverage on the test dataset. The conformal prediction identifies several predictions as unreliable, which require expert verification for decision-making purposes. This article provides an overview of the mental health challenges faced by pilots and air traffic controllers (ATCs), whose stressful professional lives may negatively impact global flight safety and security. The adverse effects of mental health disorders on their flight performance pose a particular safety risk, especially in sudden unexpected startle situations. Therefore, the early detection, prediction and prevention of mental health deterioration in pilots and ATCs, particularly among those at high risk, are crucial to minimize potential air crash incidents caused by human factors. Recent research in artificial intelligence (AI) demonstrates the potential of machine and deep learning, edge and cloud computing, virtual reality and wearable multimodal physiological sensors for monitoring and predicting mental health disorders. Longitudinal monitoring and analysis of pilots' and ATCs physiological, cognitive and behavioral states could help predict individuals at risk of undisclosed or emerging mental health disorders. Utilizing AI tools and methodologies to identify and select these individuals for preventive mental health training and interventions could be a promising and effective approach to preventing potential air crash accidents attributed to human factors and related mental health problems. Based on these insights, the article advocates for the design of a multidisciplinary mental healthcare ecosystem in modern aviation using AI tools and technologies, to foster more efficient and effective mental health management, thereby enhancing flight safety and security standards. Objective: This study analyzed Ohio workers' compensation data to identify potential prevention strategies for common oil and gas extraction industry claims. Methods: Claim rates for 2001-2018 were calculated per full-time equivalent employee. Descriptive analyses on free-text descriptions of lost-time (LT) claims (>7 days away from work) identified common characteristics among claims and injured workers. Results: Among 3134 claims, 860 (27%) were LT. The industry group, drilling contractors, experienced the highest LT claims rate, whereas the cost from servicing contractors was the highest. Contact with objects and equipment caused the highest LT claims rate. The most frequent LT occupation was roustabout, and the most frequent LT work activity was material handling. Transportation incidents caused most fatalities and hospitalizations. Over half of LT claims were from short-tenured workers. Conclusions: Both proven and innovative approaches are needed to reduce severe workers' compensation claims in this industry. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Airborne respirable crystalline silica (RCS) has been a widely recognized hazard in the United States for nearly 100 years, yet it continues to pose a risk to construction tradespersons, among others. RCS exposures vary widely depending on site conditions and tools and materials used. The proper use of engineering, administrative, and personal protective equipment (PPE) controls can effectively reduce exposure to RCS. Historically, others have reviewed available RCS exposure data among construction trades and reported that there were considerable data gaps and variability that needed to be addressed. This current assessment aimed to synthesize available peer-reviewed exposure studies to determine potential RCS exposures during the use of common construction materials and evaluate to what extent data gaps and variability persist. Twenty-eight studies were identified that reported RCS exposure during construction tasks. After conversion to the unit of µg/m3, reported measurements from samples collected for varying durations ranged from 6.0 to 75,500 µg/m3 for work with concrete, 80 to 4,240 µg/m3 for work with brick, <59 to 10,900 µg/m3 for work with mortar, 90 to 44,370 µg/m3 for work with engineered stone, and 70 to 380 µg/m3 for work with roof tile. To better facilitate pooling data across studies, future researchers should report their sample duration, clarify how time-weighted average (TWA) exposure data are calculated, report the silica content of the material being manipulated, and specify whether samples were collected while the task was performed in isolation or on a worksite where other silica-containing materials were also actively handled. When reporting results as respirable quartz, it is important to note whether any other polymorphic forms of silica were detected. It is ultimately the employer's responsibility to train employees and monitor and control RCS exposures on construction worksites. This study aimed to evaluate and design masks against viruses, especially SARS-CoV-2 associated with COVID-19. A continuum filtration model was developed where the rate of particle deposition and "sticking" on the filter fibers is a critical term in the mass transfer, together with permeation velocity, filter porosity, tortuosity, and Brownian diffusion. CFD simulations of the airflow during respiration lead to the recommendation that the filter permeability should be above 4 × 10−11 m2 to direct the airflow for effectiveness against virus particles; otherwise, low filter permeabilities cause the unfiltered air to flow preferentially through the leak gaps between the mask and the headform. Different mask filters with microstructural and geometry data from the literature are assessed via filtration simulations for breathability and filtration efficiency. The results demonstrate that a surgical mask of 25% porosity, pore size of 150 µm and permeability of 4.4 × 10−11 m2 can achieve 100% minimum efficiency while demonstrating high breathability, complying with the criteria of FFP3, N95, and surgical Class II and IIR masks. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health recommends the use of nitrile gloves with a minimum thickness of 5.0 ± 2.0 mil [0.127 ± 0.051 millimeters] in situations where it is suspected or known that fentanyl or other illicit drugs are present. However, there is limited data available on fentanyl permeation through gloves. Current test methods used to measure fentanyl permeation do not consider the effect of glove fit and flexion. Furthermore, first responders need to have PPE readily available in the field, and storage conditions may affect the protective performance of the gloves. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of glove stretch and storage temperatures on glove durability and barrier performance against fentanyl. Nine nitrile glove models previously shown to be resistant to fentanyl permeation were selected for this investigation. These nine models were stretched 25% in one linear direction, to consider glove fit and flexion, and tested against fentanyl hydrochloride permeation. Additionally, four of the nine glove models were stored at 48 °C, 22 °C, and −20 °C, and evaluated for tensile strength, ultimate elongation, and puncture resistance after up to 16 wk of storage and fentanyl permeation after up to 8 wk of storage. At least one sample for six of the nine tested models had maximum permeation over the test method fail threshold when stretched. The tested storage temperatures showed no effect on glove tensile strength, ultimate elongation, and puncture resistance. The findings of this study can be used to inform PPE recommendations, with consideration to storage practices and proper sizing for first responders with potential exposure to fentanyl and other illicit drugs. The results of this study can be used to assess the need for new standard test methods to evaluate the barrier performance of gloves and shelf-life determination with consideration to glove fit. The article highlights two 90-minute events at an art museum in Boston, Massachusetts to test the use of visual art sessions as an intervention to enhance nurse leader self-care and well-being and teamwork outside the acute care setting. It presents results of the General Medicine Service divisional leader event which utilized the pedagogic technique of Visual Thinking Strategies, as well as the second group activity which was a reflective writing exercise called Paint Chip Poetry.

Drawing on social exchange theory, we proposed a dual-stage moderated mediation framework to examine the impact of abusive supervision on employee safety behavior in high-risk industries. We conducted a survey of 652 frontline employees from 32 chemical establishments in southwest China using scales assessing abusive supervision, burnout, employee safety behavior, and trait mindfulness. Our results revealed that abusive supervision had detrimental effects on employee safety behavior, with burnout partially mediating this relationship. Trait mindfulness emerged as a mitigating factor that attenuated the negative influence of abusive supervision and subsequent burnout on employee safety behavior. The findings shed light on the harmful consequences of abusive supervision within the transitional Chinese chemical industry landscape and provide valuable insights for enhancing leadership quality and promoting mindfulness-based employee initiatives. Funeral workers (FWs) work within increasingly medicalized and commodified death-management systems. This study explored Worker Health and Safety (WHS) impacts in contemporary death management on Australian and Irish FWs. Mixed methods combined a survey and interviews. Survey data were descriptively summarized, interviews thematically analyzed, and a schematic systems model developed of the combined results. Survey participants (n = 45) reported psychosocial hazards from work pressures, competition, and fatigue. Psychosocial hazards were more frequently reported than physical hazards by Australian FWs. Physical hazards were of greater concern to Irish FWs. Themes from 11 interviews were: Personal Attributes, Work Demands, and Socio-Cultural Context. All FWs reported conflicts between individual capacities, work demands, and resources, resulting in hazardous personal states including difficulty sleeping and stress. Respectfully manually handling human remains and "event management" demands for increasingly elaborate funerals created negative WHS impacts. Given the enormous scale of the COVID-19 pandemic affecting the healthcare sector, limited human resource capacity, and efforts to prevent the spread of COVID-19, occupational health protection could not escape changes. The aim was to identify and compare the regulations regarding the provision of medical occupational check-ups (MOCs) during the pandemic in all European Union member states (EU MS). The study employed the Delphi method, involving experts from EU MS to assess MOC regulations between January 2020 and May 2021. Experts were queried regarding the existence and specifics of MOC regulations, particularly for entrance and periodic MOCs at hazardous and non-hazardous workplaces. Out of the 27 EU MS surveyed, 13 EU MS did not regulate MOCs, while 14 EU MS (51.6%) regulated the provision of MOCs. The regulations were changes in the way MOCs were provided, modifications (postponement in time, alternative provision, e.g. using telemedicine or online connection, or replacing the medical certificate of fitness to work based on the MOC with a declaration by the worker), or interruption without compensation, even for hazardous works. The regulations were in effect for different lengths of time and varied in some countries during the study period. The cumulative duration of MOC interruptions in all EU MS during the study period was 137 months (7.5% of the cumulative study period of 1836 months). This study surveyed Asian American healthcare workers to examine the impact of discrimination on workplace stress during the COVID-19 pandemic. Workplace stress was measured by utilizing the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10), and discrimination experienced by healthcare workers was measured using the Everyday Discrimination Scale. This research reported several key findings. Healthcare workers who were not married at the time of the survey experienced the most discrimination, followed by those who worked less than five years. Those who were married experienced the least discrimination. Healthcare workers with less than five years of work experience felt the most workplace stress, followed by those who were not married, while those who were married experienced the least workplace stress. Healthcare workers who experienced greater discrimination also reported higher workplace stress. As hypothesized, workplace discrimination emerged as the most influential predictor of Asian HCWs' workplace stress during the pandemic. Feeling safe at work and being married contributed to less workplace stress among healthcare workers during the pandemic. Why do elite professionals leave hard-earned, privileged corporate careers? This article examines an underappreciated case of employee turnover, white-collar opt-out, which involves resignations that may not immediately lead to a similar job or life experience, but are instead followed by alternatives to fast-track careers, including seeking another occupation, stay-at-home parenting, or pursuit of leisure and self-exploration. Drawing on 70 in-depth interviews with Turkish professional-managerial employees of transnational corporations located in both Istanbul and New York City, I examine their narratives about the quality of working life and their decisions to opt out through the lenses of worker consent and alienation. I identify the lack of work-life balance and fulfillment with one's labor as drivers of opting out, showing how these push factors, combined with various pull factors of non-working life and safety nets, encourage elite workers to overcome status anxiety and abandon corporate careers. The article extends labor process theory insights into high-paying corporate occupations, illuminating how so-called "good jobs" may produce a relatively low quality of working life. It also exposes the inherent limits of resource-centered approaches to inequality, showing how alienating work can undermine the quality of life of even upwardly mobile, high-skilled workers. Background: The rising prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal disorders has numerous physical, financial, and mental repercussions for surgeons. This study aims to establish whether the use of a wearable posture device can improve the operating time spent in suboptimal, high-risk postures. Methods: Surgeons were recruited in Phase 1 of this prospective randomised study and baseline postural data was obtained. In Phase 2, participants were randomised to receive either a traditional educational workshop or intraoperative vibrations from the device to correct postural lapses. During minor elective day cases, intraoperative postural data was collected and stratified by forward flexion angle, into five risk categories (negligible to very high). Participants' experience with the sensor was also assessed. Results: A total of 100 surgical procedures (Phase 1: n = 50; Phase 2: n = 50) were performed by eight surgeons of varying seniority. Exposure to the educational intervention increased time spent in suboptimal posture (Phase 1 vs. Phase 2); 47.5% vs. 67.8%, p = 0.05. However, the vibrational intervention significantly reduced this time; 50.0% vs. 20.7%, p = 0.005. Procedure type didn't influence posture although, laparoscopic interventions spent most time in negligible-risk postures; 47.7% vs. 49.3%, compared to open procedures. Surgical consultants spent less time in suboptimal posture compared to fellow/registrars; 30.3% vs. 72.6% (Phase 1) and 33.8% vs. 65.3% (Phase 2). Conclusion: Vibrational intervention from the device significantly decreased the time spent in suboptimal, high-risk postures. As procedure type wasn't correlated with postural changes, surgeon-specific factors in regulating posture are paramount. Background: The COVID-19 pandemic placed a huge strain on healthcare services around the world, including community services. Students also faced substantial disturbance to educational programmes. Student district nurses are usually employed members of staff and can be recalled to the workforce, whereas pre-registration students cannot. Aims: This paper explores the feelings and experiences of student district nurses during the first UK national lockdown of the COVID-19 pandemic. An interpretative phenomenological approach was taken. Method: A semi structured 1:1 interview and focus group was held via zoom in July 2020. A total of eight student district nurses, who were all registered adult nurses, took part. Data was analysed using the Braun and Clarke model to identify themes. Results: The findings related to their experience of being a community adult registered nurse on the frontline, while also being a student district nurse. Three themes were identified from the analysis: anxiety and uncertainty, management of risk and teamwork. Conclusion: This study highlights the contribution that community nurses made in the clinical response to the COVID-19 pandemic. It adds to a paucity of literature available from this clinical setting and specifically from the viewpoint of a student district nurse. There is much written on the strains on hospital care, but it should be remembered that district nursing is the service that never shuts its doors because it has reached capacity. This study found that a lack of communication and uncertainty about their future as students contributed to heightened stress and anxiety. Teamwork and camaraderie are a vital aspect of any team and one that can support resilience in times of heightened stress. Since 2017, the #MeToo movement has highlighted gender-based violence and harassment in the comedy industry, where those comedians affected have little to no workplace infrastructure to lean on. Because comedy clubs are described as venues rather than sites of work, comedy workers are not technically employees and are not protected by workplace safety laws nor supported by professional organizations or unions. We argue that the lack of a formal workplace and its related precarity exacerbates violence against women, queer, transgender, disabled, and/or workers in the Canadian and American comedy industries, pushing comedy workers to enact do-it-yourself workplace safety strategies to protect themselves and one another. We describe these protective, caring activities as akin to Brenda Parker's "double killjoy," and push our understanding of creative work into places of public resistance and life-making. Welding defects can pose significant safety risks in the industrial production. Accurate detection of these defects is crucial for ensuring the industrial production safety. Traditional computer vision methods rely on operator experience and knowledge and are time-consuming. In addition, manual feature extraction and classifier definition become more difficult for complex images or unknown defects. In contrast, deep learning can automatically extract features from raw data and build classifiers with higher accuracy. Additionally, deep learning models have stronger generalization ability and can identify a wider range of defects, without being limited by feature engineering. Consequently, we proposed a welding defect detection model based on multiscale feature enhancement and aggregation based on the advanced deep learning model YOLOv7. The model is composed of a wavelet multiscale attention (WMA), a parallel sampling module (PSS), and a path expansion aggregation network (PEANet). We compared the model with a variety of excellent object detection algorithms. Experiments show that the proposed model can effectively identify welding defects. Compared with the original model, the mAP has increased by approximately 1.2%, the average recall has increased by approximately 5.3%, the parameter volume has increased slightly, and the Flops has decreased by approximately 62.6%.. Aim: To explore the career decisions and aspirations of early‐career registered nurses in New Brunswick, Canada. Design: A qualitative study using an interpretive description approach was conducted. Methods: Semi‐structured one‐on‐one interviews were conducted with a purposive sample of nurses (n = 22) currently working in New Brunswick, Canada, with up to 5 years of experience from February to April 2022. Results: Participants described diverse career paths and aspirations. Personal factors affecting these included the desire for meaningful work, career satisfaction, work‐life balance, spending time with family, working in a preferred location, and finances. Professionally, working conditions were the dominant factor influencing early‐career nurses' career decisions and aspirations. Participants described how short staffing, safety, support, and scheduling influenced their day‐to‐day work, mental and physical health, job and career satisfaction, and intent to leave. Conclusion: The findings highlighted the abundant and diverse career opportunities available to nurses early in their careers. Early‐career nurses are interested in finding nursing positions with a high degree of person‐job fit and value opportunities for ongoing professional education and growth. Aim: To explore Remote Area Nurses' experiences of the implementation of workplace health and safety policies and risk mitigation strategies in Australian very remote primary health clinics. Design: This qualitative study used online semi‐structured interviews, with participants purposively sampled to maximize variation in work location and service type. Data were analysed using a reflexive thematic analysis approach. Coding was carried out inductively, with NVivo 12 aiding data management. Setting: The interviews were conducted from 24 Februrary 2021 to 06 March 2021 with Remote Area Nurses from very remote primary health clinics in Australia. Participants: Fifteen Remote Area Nurses participated in the study. Results: Thematic analysis revealed varied approaches to workplace safety among the different health services and regions. While the spread of 'never alone' policies in many clinics addressed one of the significant risks faced by Remote Area Nurses, gaps remained even for hazards specifically highlighted in existing work health and safety legislation. Meaningful collaboration with staff and the community, local orientation, preparation for the role and providing quality care were protective factors for staff safety. Understaffing, unsafe infrastructure and inadequate equipment were common concerns among Remote Area Nurses. Conclusion: Health services need to prioritize workplace safety and take a continuous quality improvement approach to its implementation. This will include ensuring safety strategies are appropriate for the local context, improving infrastructure maintenance, and establishing sustainable second responder systems such as a pool of drivers with local knowledge. Implications for the Profession: Poor personal safety contributes to burnout and high turnover of staff. Nurses' insights into the barriers and enablers of current workplace safety strategies will aid policymakers and employers in future improvements. The safety of practitioners working in the area of domestic abuse is a current subject of research and practice concern, as services endeavour to better understand constantly evolving tactics of violence and abuse and respond appropriately. This paper reports on a subset of findings from a practice‐led research project focussed on capacity‐building workers and their organizations to address domestic abuse, which highlighted the ongoing concerns expressed by practitioners—particularly female practitioners—about their own physical, emotional, and professional safety. Ethnographic notes were taken of Community of Practice discussions in four regions of New South Wales, Australia, involving 69 senior health practitioners from a range of service streams: specialist domestic abuse, mental health, substance use, and child protection. Themes identified through thematic analysis included the following: a tailored approach to practising safely; attending to physical safety; threats to professional identity; promoting emotional well‐being; documentation to support worker safety; and attending to cultural safety. These themes are encapsulated in the practitioner question: Who's got my back?—highlighting the importance of legislation, policy, and practices that provide an environment in which safety and support are embedded in a culture of care at every organizational level. Objectives. To identify appropriate interventions to prevent injury, we conducted a qualitative study among commercial shrimp fishermen in the Gulf of Mexico. Methods. Using qualitative and participatory research methods, including interviews, photovoice, and workplace observations in southeast Texas and the Rio Grande Valley in Texas, we examined the social‒structural dimensions that contribute to physical and psychological injury. Results. We found that multiple layers of vulnerability and danger exist among shrimpers with interacting themes: (1) recognizing risk, (2) precarious employment, and (3) psychological distress. Conclusions. Our results add to the growing body of knowledge that emphasizes the negative health impacts of underregulated, high-risk, and physically demanding work performed primarily by im/migrants. What are the implications for practice?: This study completes the development of Safewards Secure, designed to foster collaboration, address issues pertinent to forensic mental health settings to enhance implementation and acceptance of the model and reduce conflict and containment. Introduction: Safewards is a model developed for acute mental health settings designed to reduce conflict and containment; however, it requires adaptation to forensic mental health settings. Aim: To develop the Safewards Secure model, a model to assist forensic mental health services to reduce conflict and containment. Method: A literature review was conducted to elicit possible modifiers and adjustments to the interventions. A Nominal Group Technique was then used to engage forensic mental health experts who had experience implementing Safewards (n = 12) to seek feedback about the suggestions and reach consensus on the Safewards Secure model and interventions. Data were thematically analysed. Results: Experts reached consensus on all suggestions, however, did recommend minor additions and modifications. Two themes were also interpreted: Safewards Secure is just as much for staff as it is for consumers, and the proposed additions encourage more meaningful staff to consumer collaboration. Discussion: This study identified key challenges experienced by nurses working in forensic mental health settings, however, these challenges were not seen as insurmountable. The Safewards Secure model offers prompts and suggestions to encourage reflection, collaboration and a humanistic approach to care in forensic mental health settings. Implications for Practice: Addressing reactions to offending behaviour and encouraging more collaboration might assist in ensuring a more person‐centred approach to forensic mental health nursing care. The global concern over fatigue in construction professionals, leading to diminished attention, unsafe behaviors, and even accidents, has escalated. Existing research on the impact of fatigue on attention has predominantly focused on qualitative behavioral aspects, relying extensively on self-reported measures and subjective assessments, resulting in interpretations with strong subjectivity and occasionally inconsistent findings. This study bridges this gap by adopting a neural perspective, utilizing a comprehensive quantitative measurement approach that integrates EEG (electroencephalograms), behavioral tests, and subjective rating scales. This interdisciplinary approach attempts to explore the neural mechanisms underlying the impact of fatigue on the attention of construction professionals, considering the regulatory effects of effort. Twenty participants from the construction sector were enlisted to undertake a 60-min Oddball cognitive task. The results indicate that as cognitive fatigue intensifies, the pattern of attention decline exhibits a slow-fast-slow trajectory. Initially, the dominance of effort is observed, which transitions to a stage where resource consumption takes precedence. In the later stage, participants tend to prioritize expediency over accuracy. The study synthesizes these outcomes to delve into the neural mechanisms of fatigue's impact on attention, addressing the distinct phases, underlying mechanisms, and functions of attention. Moreover, it provides actionable recommendations to elevate attention levels and enhance safety in the construction industry, serving as a valuable guide for practical applications and further research in construction safety management. Practical Applications: This study underscores the effect of cognitive fatigue on the attention of construction professionals, directly impacting on-site safety. With increasing fatigue, the attentiveness and response precision of these professionals diminish, escalating accident risks. The short-term rockburst prediction in underground engineering plays a significant role in the safety of the workers and equipment. Due to the complex link between microseismicity and the rockburst occurrence, prediction of short-term rockburst severity is always challenging. It is, therefore, necessary to develop an intelligent model that can predict rockbursts with high accuracy. Besides the predicting capability, it is essential to understand the model's interpretability regarding the decisions to ensure reliability, trust and accountability. Accordingly, this paper employs the knowledge of explainable artificial intelligences (XAI) by proposing a novel glass-box machine learning model: explainable boosting machine (EBM) to predict the short-term rockburst. Microseismic (MS) data obtained from the underground engineering projects are utilized to build the model, which is also compared with the black-box random forest (RF) model. The result shows that EBM can accurately predict the rockburst severity with high accuracy, while providing with the underlined reasoning behind the prediction from the global and local perspectives. The EBM global explanation reveals that MS energy followed by MS apparent volume and the MS events is the most contributing factor to determining the Rockburst severity. It also gives insights into the relationship between MS factors and rockburst risks, delivering how various MS parameters impact the model predictions. The local explanation extracts the understanding of wrongly predicted samples. The interpretability and transparency of the proposed method will facilitate understanding the model's decision which adds effective guidance evaluating the short-term rockburst risks. Background: Occupational violence (OV) is a priority issue that significantly affects the safety of nurses, leading to staff burnout and poor retention issues. Security personnel are common in inpatient settings, yet there is limited research on their role, function, and impacts. The study aims to qualitatively evaluate a novel security role to reduce OV in inpatient settings. Methods : This qualitative study was conducted in a tertiary hospital in Brisbane, Queensland. A novel security role (Ambassador) was piloted in three inpatient wards over 6 months in 2020 to mitigate OV risk. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted. All interviews were audio recorded. Interview transcripts were transcribed. Deductive analysis based on the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR) was used to identify the experiences and perceptions of the participants. Findings : 17 participants were interviewed. Five themes were identified including program characteristics, internal drivers, external drivers, individual experience, and implementation process. An Ambassador proactively engages with patients and visitors and employs behavioral strategies to de-escalate or redirect persons of concern. Participants considered Ambassadors to be important members of the health care team who supported the provision of patient and family-centered care. Successful implementation was said to require collaboration between clinical and security services and a small agile project team with authority and autonomy. Conclusion/Application to practice : This study provides many insights into the successful implementation of a novel security role in acute hospital settings. Background: Workers' reporting of work-related injuries or illnesses is important for treatment and prevention, yet research often focuses on reporting barriers. This study aimed to identify factors related to work-related musculoskeletal disorder (WRMSD) reporting attitudes and their connection to reporting intention and behavior. Methods: We analyzed data from 377 direct care workers employed in 19 long-term care facilities in South Korea. A self-administered questionnaire collected demographics, job characteristics, physical and psychosocial factors, musculoskeletal symptoms, reporting attitudes, and WRMSD reporting intentions and behavior between May and August 2022. We used a generalized linear mixed model with a random intercept by employers to identify factors influencing reporting attitudes. To explore the relationship between reporting attitude and reporting intention and behavior, simple logistic regression was also conducted. Results: We achieved an 86% response rate. The majority of the study participants were female (87.2%), married (95.9%), and non-immigrant (72.8%). Of the study participants, 48.9% had no intention to report WRMSDs, and 44.3% held negative reporting attitudes. Among 200 workers with WRMSDs, 86.5% did not report them. Attitudes were associated with work duration, safety training, management safety priority, WRMSD experience, and symptom severity and frequency. Management safety priority did not moderate this relationship. Significant links existed between attitudes and reporting intention and behavior. Conclusions/Applications to Practice: This study highlights the vital influence of workers' attitudes on reporting work-related injuries and illnesses. Occupational health providers should employ strategies, such as tailored safety training and management commitment, with a focus on addressing the unique needs of long-tenured and musculoskeletal-exposed workers. Despite advancements in technology, safety equipment, and training within the construction industry over recent decades, the prevalence of fatal and nonfatal injuries and accidents remains a significant concern among construction workers. Hard hats and safety vests are crucial safety gear known to mitigate severe head trauma and other injuries. However, adherence to safety protocols, including the use of such gear, is often inadequate, posing potential risks to workers. Moreover, current manual safety monitoring systems are laborious and time-consuming. To address these challenges and enhance workplace safety, there is a pressing need to automate safety monitoring processes economically, with reduced processing times. This research proposes a deep learning-based pipeline for real-time identification of non-compliance with wearing hard hats and safety vests, enabling safety officers to preempt hazards and mitigate risks at construction sites. We evaluate various neural networks for edge deployment and find that the Single Shot Multibox Detector (SSD) MobileNet V2 model excels in computational efficiency, making it particularly suitable for this application-oriented task. The experiments and comparative analyses demonstrate the pipeline's effectiveness in accurately identifying instances of non-compliance across different scenarios, underscoring its potential for improving safety outcomes.
