We report the discovery of a surprising binary configuration of the double-mode Cepheid OGLE-LMC-CEP-1347 pulsating in the first (P_1=0.690d) and second overtone (P_2=0.556d) modes. The orbital period (P_orb=59d) of the system is five times shorter than the shortest known to date (310d) for a binary Cepheid. The Cepheid itself is also the shortest-period one ever found in a binary system and the first double-mode Cepheid in a spectroscopically double-lined binary. OGLE-LMC-CEP-1347 is most probably on its first crossing through the instability strip, as inferred from both its short period and fast period increase, consistent with evolutionary models, and from the short orbital period (not expected for binary Cepheids whose components have passed through the red giant phase). Our evolutionary analysis yielded a first-crossing Cepheid with a mass in a range of 2.9-3.4 Msun (lower than any measured Cepheid mass), consistent with observations. The companion is a stable star, at least two times fainter and less massive than the Cepheid (preliminary mass ratio q=0.55), while also redder and thus at the subgiant or more advanced evolutionary stage. To match these characteristics, the Cepheid has to be a product of binary interaction, most likely a merger of two less massive stars, which makes it the second known classical Cepheid of binary origin. We characterize the extreme heartbeat star system MACHO 80.7443.1718 in the LMC using TESS photometry and spectroscopic observations from the Magellan Inamori Kyocera Echelle (MIKE) and SOAR Goodman spectographs. MACHO 80.7443.1718 was first identified as a heartbeat star system in the All-Sky Automated Survey for SuperNovae (ASAS-SN) with $P_{\rm orb}=32.836\pm0.008\,{\rm d}$. MACHO 80.7443.1718 is a young (${\sim}6$~Myr), massive binary, composed of a B0 Iae supergiant with $M_1 \simeq 35 M_\odot$ and an O9.5V secondary with $M_2 \simeq 16 M_\odot$ on an eccentric ($e=0.51\pm0.03$) orbit. In addition to having the largest variability amplitude amongst all known heartbeats stars, MACHO 80.7443.1718 is also one of the most massive heartbeat stars yet discovered. The B[e] supergiant has Balmer emission lines and permitted/forbidden metallic emission lines associated with a circumstellar disk. The disk rapidly dissipates at periastron which could indicate mass transfer to the secondary, but re-emerges immediately following periastron passage. MACHO 80.7443.1718 also shows tidally excited oscillations at the $N=25$ and $N=41$ orbital harmonics and has a rotational period of 4.4 d., 21 pages, 16 figures. Submitted to MNRAS

We present a survey of MgII absorbing gas in the vicinity of 380 random galaxies, using 156 background quasi-stellar objects(QSOs) as absorption-line probes. The sample comprises 211 isolated (73 quiescent and 138 star-forming galaxies) and 43 non-isolated galaxies with sensitive constraints for both MgII absorption and Ha emission. The projected distances span a range from d=9 to 497 kpc, redshifts of the galaxies range from z=0.10 to 0.48, and rest-frame absolute B-band magnitudes range from $M_{\rm B}=-16.7$ to $-22.8$. Our analysis shows that the rest-frame equivalent width of MgII, $W_r$(2796), depends on halo radius($R_h$), $B$-band luminosity($L_{\rm B}$) and stellar mass ($M_{\rm star}$) of the host galaxies, and declines steeply with increasing $d$ for isolated, star-forming galaxies. $W_r$(2796) exhibits no clear trend for either isolated, quiescent galaxies or non-isolated galaxies. We present vanadium (V) abundances for 255 metal-poor stars, derived from high-resolution optical spectra from the Magellan Inamori Kyocera Echelle spectrograph on the Magellan Telescopes at Las Campanas Observatory, the Robert G. Tull Coud\'{e} Spectrograph on the Harlan J. Smith Telescope at McDonald Observatory, and the High Resolution Spectrograph on the Hobby-Eberly Telescope at McDonald Observatory. We use updated V I and V II atomic transition data from recent laboratory studies, and we increase the number of lines examined (from 1 to 4 lines of V I, and from 2 to 7 lines of V II). As a result, we reduce the V abundance uncertainties for most stars by more than 20% and expand the number of stars with V detections from 204 to 255. This compilation is the fourth data release from the $R$-Process Alliance (RPA) search for $r$-process-enhanced stars, and the second release based on "snapshot" high-resolution ($R \sim 30,000$) spectra collected with the du Pont 2.5m Telescope. In this data release, we propose a new delineation between the $r$-I and $r$-II stellar classes at $\mathrm{[Eu/Fe]} = +0.7$, instead of the empirically chosen $\mathrm{[Eu/Fe]} = +1.0$ level previously in use, based on statistical tests of the complete set of RPA data released to date. We also statistically justify the minimum level of [Eu/Fe] for definition of the $r$-I stars, [Eu/Fe] $> +0.3$. Redefining the separation between $r$-I and $r$-II stars will aid in analysis of the possible progenitors of these two classes of stars and whether these signatures arise from separate astrophysical sources at all. Applying this redefinition to previous RPA data, the number of identified $r$-II and $r$-I stars changes to 51 and 121, respectively, from the initial set of data releases published thus far. In this data release, we identify 21 new $r$-II, 111 new $r$-I (plus three re-identified), and 7 new (plus one re-identified) limited-$r$ stars out of a total of 232 target stars, resulting in a total sample of 72 new $r$-II stars, 232 new $r$-I stars, and 42 new limited-$r$ stars identified by the RPA to date., 17 pages, 7 figures, 6 tables; accepted to ApJS

Zechmeister et al. (2009) surveyed 38 nearby M dwarfs from March 2000 to March 2007 with VLT2 and the UVES spectrometer. This data has recently been reanalyzed (Butler et al. 2019), yielding a significant improvement in the Doppler velocity precision. Spurred by this, we have combined the UVES data with velocity sets from HARPS, Magellan/PFS, and Keck/HIRES. Sixteen planet candidates have been uncovered orbiting nine M dwarfs. Five of them are new planets corresponding to radial velocity signals, which are not sensitive to the choice of noise models and are identified in multiple data sets over various timespans. Eight candidate planets require additional observation to be confirmed. We also confirm three previously reported planets. Among the new planets, GJ 180 d and GJ 229A c are super-Earths located in the conservative habitable zones of their host stars. We investigate their dynamical stability using the Monte Carlo approach and find both planetary orbits are robust to the gravitational perturbations of the companion planets. Due to their proximity to the Sun, the angular separation between the host stars and the potentially habitable planets in these two systems is 25 and 59 mas, respectively. They are thus good candidates for future direct imaging by JWST and E-ELT. In addition we find GJ 433 c, a cold super-Neptune belonging to an unexplored population of Neptune-like planets. With a separation of 0.5 as from its host star, GJ 433 c is probably the first realistic candidate for direct imaging of cold Neptunes. We use photometric and spectroscopic observations of the eclipsing binary E32 in the globular cluster 47 Tuc to derive the masses, radii, and luminosities of the component stars. The system has an orbital period of 40.9 d, a markedly eccentric orbit with e = 0.24, and is shown to be a member of or a recent escaper from the cluster. We obtain Mp = 0.862 ± 0.005 M, Rp = 1.183 ± 0.003 R, Lp = 1.65 ± 0.05 L for the primary and Ms = 0.827 ± 0.005 M, Rs = 1.004 ± 0.004 R, Ls = 1.14 ± 0.04 L for the secondary. Based on these data and on an earlier analysis of the binary V69 in 47 Tuc, we measure the distance to the cluster from the distance moduli of the component stars, and, independently, from a colour – surface brightness calibration. We obtain 4.55 ± 0.03 and 4.50 ± 0.07 kpc, respectively – values compatible within 1 σ with recent estimates based on Gaia DR2 parallaxes. By comparing the M–R diagram of the two binaries and the colour–magnitude diagram of 47 Tuc to Dartmouth model isochrones we estimate the age of the cluster to be 12.0 ± 0.5 Gyr, and the helium abundance of the cluster to be Y ≈ 0.25., Erratum published in volume 494, issue 1, pages 846-9, May 2020. We derive relative proper motions of stars in the fields of the globular clusters M12, NGC 6362, M4, M55, M22, NGC 6752, NGC 3201, M30, M10, NGC 362, M5, and 47 Tucanae based on data collected between 1997 and 2015 with the 1-m Swope telescope of Las Campanas Observatory. We determine membership class and membership probability for over 446 000 objects, and show that these are efficient methods for separating field stars from members of the cluster. In particular, membership probabilities of variable stars and blue/yellow/red stragglers are determined. Finally, we find absolute proper motions for six globular clusters from our sample: M55, NGC 3201, M10, NGC 362, M5, and 47 Tuc. An electronic catalogue of the derived proper motions is publicly available via the internet.

DS Tuc Ab is a Neptune-sized planet that orbits around a member of the 45 Myr old Tucana-Horologium moving group. Here, we report the measurement of the sky-projected angle between the stellar spin axis and the planet's orbital axis, based on the observation of the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect during three separate planetary transits. The orbit appears to be well aligned with the equator of the host star, with a projected obliquity of lambda = 2.5 +1.0/-0.9 deg. In addition to the distortions in the stellar absorption lines due to the transiting planet, we observed variations that we attribute to large starspots, with angular sizes of tens of degrees. We present the discoveries of KELT-25b (TIC 65412605, TOI-626.01) and KELT-26b (TIC 160708862, TOI-1337.01), two transiting companions orbiting relatively bright, early A-stars. The transit signals were initially detected by the KELT survey, and subsequently confirmed by \textit{TESS} photometry. KELT-25b is on a 4.40-day orbit around the V = 9.66 star CD-24 5016 ($T_{\rm eff} = 8280^{+440}_{-180}$ K, $M_{\star}$ = $2.18^{+0.12}_{-0.11}$ $M_{\odot}$), while KELT-26b is on a 3.34-day orbit around the V = 9.95 star HD 134004 ($T_{\rm eff}$ =$8640^{+500}_{-240}$ K, $M_{\star}$ = $1.93^{+0.14}_{-0.16}$ $M_{\odot}$), which is likely an Am star. We have confirmed the sub-stellar nature of both companions through detailed characterization of each system using ground-based and \textit{TESS} photometry, radial velocity measurements, Doppler Tomography, and high-resolution imaging. For KELT-25, we determine a companion radius of $R_{\rm P}$ = $1.64^{+0.039}_{-0.043}$ $R_{\rm J}$, and a 3-sigma upper limit on the companion's mass of $\sim64~M_{\rm J}$. For KELT-26b, we infer a planetary mass and radius of $M_{\rm P}$ = $1.41^{+0.43}_{-0.51}$ $M_{\rm J}$ and $R_{\rm P}$ = $1.940^{+0.060}_{-0.058}$ $R_{\rm J}$. From Doppler Tomographic observations, we find KELT-26b to reside in a highly misaligned orbit. This conclusion is weakly corroborated by a subtle asymmetry in the transit light curve from the \textit{TESS} data. The radial velocity method plays a major role in the discovery of nearby exoplanets. To efficiently find planet candidates from the data obtained in high precision radial velocity surveys, we apply a signal diagnostic framework to detect radial velocity signals that are statistically significant, consistent in time, robust to the choice of noise models, and not correlated with stellar activity. Based on the application of this approach to the survey data of the Planet Finder Spectrograph (PFS), we report fifteen planet candidates located in fourteen stellar systems. We find that the orbits of the planet candidates around HD 210193, 103949, 8326, and 71135 are consistent with temperate zones around these stars (where liquid water could exist on the surface). With periods of 7.76 and 15.14 days respectively, the planet candidates around star HIP 54373 form a 1:2 resonance system. These discoveries demonstate the feasibility of automated detection of exoplanets from large radial velocity surveys, which may provide a complete sample of nearby Earth analogs., 30 pages, 20 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in ApJS

In the era of precision cosmology, it is essential to empirically determine the Hubble constant with an accuracy of one per cent or better. At present, the uncertainty on this constant is dominated by the uncertainty in the calibration of the Cepheid period - luminosity relationship (also known as Leavitt Law). The Large Magellanic Cloud has traditionally served as the best galaxy with which to calibrate Cepheid period-luminosity relations, and as a result has become the best anchor point for the cosmic distance scale. Eclipsing binary systems composed of late-type stars offer the most precise and accurate way to measure the distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud. Currently the limit of the precision attainable with this technique is about two per cent, and is set by the precision of the existing calibrations of the surface brightness - colour relation. Here we report the calibration of the surface brightness-colour relation with a precision of 0.8 per cent. We use this calibration to determine the geometrical distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud that is precise to 1 per cent based on 20 eclipsing binary systems. In this first paper of the series we describe our project to calibrate the distance determination method based on early-type binary systems. The final objective is to measure accurate, geometrical distances to galaxies beyond the Magellanic Clouds with a precision of 2%. We start with the analysis of two early-type systems for which we have collected all the required spectroscopic and photometric data. Apart from catalog publications, these systems have not been studied yet, and it is the first time the modeling of light and radial velocity curves is performed for them. From the analysis we obtained precise physical parameters of the components, including the masses measured with precision of 0.6-1% and radii with precision of 0.4-3%. For one system we determined the $(V-K)$ color and estimated the distance using the bolometric flux scaling method (DM=18.47 $\pm$ 0.15 mag), which agrees well with our accurate determination of the distance to the LMC from late-type giants. For the same system we determined the surface brightness of individual stars using our model, and checked that it is consistent with a recent surface brightness -- color relation. We compared our results with evolution theory models of massive stars and found they agree in general, however, models with higher overshooting values give more consistent results. Earth-sized planets in the habitable zones of M dwarfs are good candidates for the study of habitability and detection of biosignatures. To search for these planets, we analyze all available radial velocity data and apply four signal detection criteria to select the optimal candidates. We find 10 strong candidates satisfying these criteria and three weak candidates showing inconsistency over time due to data samplings. We also confirm three previous planet candidates and improve their orbital solutions through combined analyses of updated data sets. Among the strong planet candidates, HIP 38594 b is a temperate super-Earth with a mass of 8.2 ± 1.7 M ⊕ and an orbital period of 60.7 ± 0.1 days, orbiting around an early-type M dwarf. Early-type M dwarfs are less active and thus are better hosts for habitable planets than mid-type and late-type M dwarfs. Moreover, we report the detection of five two-planet systems, including two systems made up of a warm or cold Neptune and a cold Jupiter, consistent with a positive correlation between these two types of planets. We also detect three temperate Neptunes, four cold Neptunes, and four cold Jupiters, contributing to a rarely explored planet population. Due to their proximity to the Sun, these planets on wide orbits are appropriate targets for direct imaging by future facilities such as the Habitable Exoplanet Observatory and the Extremely Large Telescope.

The abundance of short-period planetary systems with high orbital obliquities relative to the spin of their host stars is often taken as evidence that scattering processes play important roles in the formation and evolution of these systems. More recent studies have suggested that wide binary companions can tilt protoplanetary disks, inducing a high stellar obliquity that form through smooth processes like disk migration. DS Tuc Ab, a transiting planet with an 8.138 day period in the 40 Myr Tucana-Horologium association, likely orbits in the same plane as its now-dissipated protoplanetary disk, enabling us to test these theories of disk physics. Here, we report on Rossiter-McLaughlin observations of one transit of DS Tuc Ab with the Planet Finder Spectrograph on the Magellan Clay Telescope at Las Campanas Observatory. We confirm the previously detected planet by modeling the planet transit and stellar activity signals simultaneously. We test multiple models to describe the stellar activity-induced radial velocity variations over the night of the transit, finding the obliquity to be low: $\lambda = 12 \pm 13$ degrees, suggesting that this planet likely formed through smooth disk processes and its protoplanetary disk was not significantly torqued by DS Tuc B. The specific stellar activity model chosen affects the results at the $\approx 5$ degree level. The extragalactic distance scale builds on the Cepheid period-luminosity (PL) relation. In this paper, we want to carry out a strictly differential comparison of the absolute PL relations obeyed by classical Cepheids in the Milky Way (MW), LMC and SMC galaxies. Taking advantage of the substantial metallicity difference among the Cepheid populations in these three galaxies, we want to establish a possible systematic trend of the PL relation absolute zero point as a function of metallicity, and determine the size of such an effect in optical and near-infrared photometric bands. We are using the IRSB Baade-Wesselink type method as calibrated by Storm et al. to determine individual distances to the Cepheids in our samples in MW, LMC and SMC. For our analysis, we use a greatly enhanced sample of Cepheids in the SMC (31 stars) as compared to the small sample (5 stars) available in our previous work. We use the distances to determine absolute Cepheid PL relations in optical and near-infrared bands in each of the three galaxies.} {Our distance analysis of 31 SMC Cepheids with periods from 4-69 days yields tight PL relations in all studied bands, with slopes consistent with the corresponding LMC and MW relations. Adopting the very accurately determined LMC slopes for the optical and near-infrared bands, we determine the zero point offsets between the corresponding absolute PL relations in the 3 galaxies. We find that in all bands the metal-poor SMC Cepheids are intrinsically fainter than their more metal-rich counterparts in the LMC and MW. In the $K$ band the metallicity effect is $-0.23\pm0.06$~mag/dex while in the $V,(V-I)$ Wesenheit index it is slightly stronger, $-0.34\pm0.06$~mag/dex. We present a determination of precise fundamental physical parameters of twenty detached, double- lined, eclipsing binary stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) containing G- or early K-type giant stars. Eleven are new systems, the remaining nine are systems already analyzed by our team for which we present updated parameters. The catalogue results from our long-term survey of eclipsing binaries in the Magellanic Clouds suitable for high-precision determination of distances (the Araucaria project). The V-band brightnesses of the systems range from 15.4 mag to 17.7 mag and their orbital periods range from 49 days to 773 days. Six systems have favorable geometry showing total eclipses. The absolute dimensions of all eclipsing binary components are calculated with a precision of better than 3% and all systems are suitable for a precise distance determination. The measured stellar masses are in the range 1.4 to 4.6 M_sun and comparison with the MESA isochrones gives ages between 0.1 and 2.1 Gyr. The systems show some weak age-metallicity relation. Two systems have components with very different masses: OGLE LMC-ECL-05430 and OGLE LMC-ECL-18365. Neither system can be fitted by single stellar evolution isochrone, explained by a past mass transfer scenario in the case of ECL-18365 and a gravitational capture or a hierarchical binary merger scenario in the case of ECL-05430. The longest period system OGLE LMC SC9 230659 shows a surprising apsidal motion which shifts the apparent position of the eclipses. In one spectrum of OGLE LMC-ECL-12669 we noted a peculiar dimming of one of the components by 65% well outside of the eclipses. Gliese 876 harbors one of the most dynamically rich and well-studied exoplanetary systems. The nearby M4V dwarf hosts four known planets, the outer three of which are trapped in a Laplace mean-motion resonance. A thorough characterization of the complex resonant perturbations exhibited by the orbiting planets, and the chaotic dynamics therein, is key to a complete picture of the system's formation and evolutionary history. Here we present a reanalysis of the system using six years of new radial velocity (RV) data from four instruments. This new data augments and more than doubles the size of the decades-long collection of existing velocity measurements. We provide updated estimates of the system parameters by employing a computationally efficient Wisdom-Holman N-body symplectic integrator, coupled with a Gaussian Process (GP) regression model to account for correlated stellar noise. Experiments with synthetic RV data show that the dynamical characterization of the system can differ depending on whether a white noise or correlated noise model is adopted. Despite there being a region of stability for an additional planet in the resonant chain, we find no evidence for one. Our new parameter estimates place the system even deeper into resonance than previously thought and suggest that the system might be in a low energy, quasi-regular double apsidal corotation resonance. We report the discovery of a radial velocity signal that can be interpreted as a planetary-mass candidate orbiting the K dwarf HD26965, with an orbital period of 42.364$\pm$0.015 days, or alternatively, as the presence of residual, uncorrected rotational activity in the data. Observations include data from HIRES, PFS, CHIRON, and HARPS, where 1,111 measurements were made over 16 years. Our best solution for HD26965 $b$ is consistent with a super-Earth that has a minimum mass of 6.92$\pm$0.79 M$_{\oplus}$ orbiting at a distance of 0.215$\pm$0.008 AU from its host star. We have analyzed the correlation between spectral activity indicators and the radial velocities from each instrument, showing moderate correlations that we include in our model. From this analysis, we recover a $\sim$38 day signal, which matches some literature values of the stellar rotation period. However, from independent Mt. Wilson HK data for this star, we find evidence for a significant 42 day signal after subtraction of longer period magnetic cycles, casting doubt on the planetary hypothesis for this period. Although our statistical model strongly suggests that the 42-day signal is Doppler in origin, we conclude that the residual effects of stellar rotation are difficult to fully model and remove from this dataset, highlighting the difficulties to disentangle small planetary signals and photospheric noise, particularly when the orbital periods are close to the rotation period of the star. The study of the chemical abundances of metal-poor stars in dwarf galaxies provides a venue to constrain paradigms of chemical enrichment and galaxy formation. Here we present metallicity and carbon abundance measurements of 100 stars in Sculptor from medium-resolution (R ~ 2000) spectra taken with the Magellan/Michigan Fiber System mounted on the Magellan-Clay 6.5m telescope at Las Campanas Observatory. We identify 24 extremely metal-poor star candidates ([Fe/H] < -3.0) and 21 carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) star candidates. Eight carbon-enhanced stars are classified with at least 2$��$ confidence and five are confirmed as such with follow-up R~6000 observations using the Magellan Echellette Spectrograph on the Magellan-Baade 6.5m telescope. We measure a CEMP fraction of 36% for stars below [Fe/H] = -3.0, indicating that the prevalence of carbon-enhanced stars in Sculptor is similar to that of the halo (~43%) after excluding likely CEMP-s and CEMP-r/s stars from our sample. However, we do not detect that any CEMP stars are strongly enhanced in carbon (e.g., [C/Fe] > 1.0). The existence of a large number of CEMP stars both in the halo and in Sculptor suggests that some halo CEMP stars may have originated from accreted early analogs of dwarf galaxies., 20 pages, 14 figures, 6 tables. The recent detection of a binary neutron star merger and the clear evidence for the decay of radioactive material observed in this event have, after sixty years of effort, provided an astrophysical site for the rapid neutron-capture ($r$-) process which is responsible for the production of the heaviest elements in our Universe. However, observations of metal-poor stars with highly-enhanced $r$-process elements have revealed abundance patterns suggesting that multiple sites may be involved. To address this issue, and to advance our understanding of the $r$-process, we have initiated an extensive search for bright ($V < 13.5$), very metal-poor ($\mathrm{[Fe/H]} < -2$) stars in the Milky Way halo exhibiting strongly-enhanced $r$-process signatures. This paper presents the first sample collected in the Southern Hemisphere, using the echelle spectrograph on du Pont 2.5m telescope at Las Campanas Observatory. We have observed and analyzed 107 stars with $-3.13 < \mathrm{[Fe/H]} < -0.79$. Of those, 12 stars are strongly enhanced in heavy $r$-process elements ($r$-II), 42 stars show moderate enhancements of heavy $r$-process material ($r$-I), and 20 stars exhibit low abundances of the heavy $r$-process elements and higher abundances of the light $r$-process elements relative to the heavy ones (limited-$r$). We describe and employ a stacking procedure to investigate abundances derived from the low S/N spectra obtained in the Carnegie RR Lyrae Survey (CARRS; Kollmeier et al. 2013). We find iron metallicities that extend from [Fe/H] ~ -2.5 to values at least as large as [Fe/H] ~ -0.5 in the 274-spectrum CARRS RRc data set. We consider RRc sample contamination by high amplitude solar metallicity delta Scuti stars (HADS) at periods less than 0.3 days, where photometric discrimination between RRc and delta Scuti stars has proven to be problematic. We offer a spectroscopic discriminant, the well-marked overabundance of heavy elements, principally [Ba/H], that is a common, if not universal, characteristic of HADS of all periods and axial rotations. No bona fide RRc stars known to us have verified heavy-element overabundances. Three out of 34 stars in our sample with [Fe/H] > -0.7 exhibit anomalously strong features of Sr, Y, Zr, Ba, and many rare earths. However, carbon is not enhanced in these three stars, and we conclude that their elevated n-capture abundances have not been generated in interior neutron-capture nucleosynthesis. Contamination by HADS appears to be unimportant, and metal-rich RRc stars occur in approximately the same proportion in the Galactic field as do metal-rich RRab stars. An apparent dearth of metal-rich RRc is probably a statistical fluke. We report the discovery of four short period extrasolar planets transiting moderately bright stars from photometric measurements of the HATSouth network coupled to additional spectroscopic and photometric follow-up observations. While the planet masses range from 0.26 to 0.90 M$_J$, the radii are all approximately a Jupiter radii, resulting in a wide range of bulk densities. The orbital period of the planets range from 2.7d to 4.7d, with HATS-43b having an orbit that appears to be marginally non-circular (e= 0.173$\pm$0.089). HATS-44 is notable for a high metallicity ([Fe/H]= 0.320$\pm$0.071). We present the analysis of the top-quality photometry of RR Lyrae stars in the globular cluster NGC 6362, gathered over 11 observing seasons by the CASE project. 16 stars are fundamental mode pulsators (RRab stars) and 16 are first overtone pulsators (RRc stars). In two stars, previously identified as RRab, V3 and V34, we detect additional periodicity identified as radial first overtone mode. Lower than usual period ratios (0.730 and 0.728), dominant pulsation in the radial fundamental mode and presence of a long-period modulation indicate, that these two variables are not classical RRd stars, but are new members of the recently identified class of anomalous RRd variables. In a significant fraction of RRc stars, 63 per cent, we detect additional shorter-period variability in the (0.60, 0.65)$P_1$ range. This form of double-periodic pulsation must be common in first overtone RR Lyr stars, as space observations indicate. The incidence rate we find in NGC 6362, is the highest in ground-based observations reported so far. We study the properties of these stars in detail; in particular we confirm that in the colour-magnitude diagram, this group is adjacent to the interface between RRab and RRc stars, as first reported in the analysis of M3 observations by Jurcsik et al. The incidence rate of the Blazhko effect is also very high: we observe it in 69 per cent of RRab stars and in 19 per cent of RRc stars. Rare, double-periodic modulation is reported in one RRab and in one RRc star. Finally we discuss V37 - a peculiar variable in which we detect two close high-amplitude periodicities and modulation. We report the discovery of a new ultra-short-period planet and summarize the properties of all such planets for which the mass and radius have been measured. The new planet, K2-131b, was discovered in K2 Campaign 10. It has a radius of 1.81-0.12+0.16 R\oplus and orbits a G dwarf with a period of 8.9 hr. Radial velocities obtained with Magellan/PFS and TNG/HARPS-N show evidence for stellar activity along with orbital motion. We determined the planetary mass using two different methods: (1) the "floating chunk offset" method, based only on changes in velocity observed on the same night; and (2) a Gaussian process regression based on both the radial velocity and photometric time series. The results are consistent and lead to a mass measurement of 6.5± 1.6 M\oplus and a mean density of 6.0-2.7+3.0 g cm-3.

The Kepler mission showed us that planets with sizes between that of Earth and Neptune appear to be the most common type in our Galaxy. These "super-Earths" continue to be of great interest for exoplanet formation, evolution, and composition studies. However, the number of super-Earths with well-constrained mass and radius measurements remains small (40 planets with $\sigma_{\rm{mass}}, Comment: In press in AJ

We present the results of a study of the type II Cepheid ($P_{puls} = 4.974 d$) in the eclipsing binary system OGLE-LMC-T2CEP-098 ($P_{orb} = 397.2 d$). The Cepheid belongs to the peculiar W Vir group, for which the evolutionary status is virtually unknown. It is the first single-lined system with a pulsating component analyzed using the method developed by Pilecki et al. (2013). We show that the presence of a pulsator makes it possible to derive accurate physical parameters of the stars even if radial velocities can be measured for only one of the components. We have used four different methods to limit and estimate the physical parameters, eventually obtaining precise results by combining pulsation theory with the spectroscopic and photometric solutions. The Cepheid radius, mass and temperature are $25.3 \pm 0.2 R_\odot$, $1.51 \pm 0.09 M_\odot$ and $5300 \pm 100 K$, respectively, while its companion has similar size ($26.3 R_\odot$), but is more massive ($6.8 M_\odot$) and hotter ($9500 K$). Our best estimate for the p-factor of the Cepheid is $1.30 \pm 0.03$. The mass, position on the period-luminosity diagram, and pulsation amplitude indicate that the pulsating component is very similar to the Anomalous Cepheids, although it has a much longer period and is redder in color. The very unusual combination of the components suggest that the system has passed through a mass transfer phase in its evolution. We report photometric observations of GQ Mus performed between 1992 and 2011. We find that the total amplitude of the orbital modulation of its brightness decreased from ~0.9 mag in 1992 to ~0.2 mag in 2010, becoming comparable to the amplitude of chaotic flickering on a time scale of several minutes. Optical spectra obtained in 2001 and 2012 indicate continuing activity of GQ Mus. The spectra show broad emission lines of HeII and HI typical for magnetic cataclysmic variables. The nova was observed as an UV-bright object in 2001 and 2012. We also show that the orbital period of GQ Mus has been constant between 1989 and 2010-2011., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, 1 table. We have derived relations between full-width-half-maxima and equivalent widths of metallic absorption lines in the spectra of RR~Lyrae stars to estimate new upper limits on the axial equatorial rotational velocities of RR~Lyrae and metal-poor red horizontal branch stars (RHB). We also have derived the variations of RR~Lyrae macroturbulent velocities during the pulsation cycles. In RRab cycles the line widths are dominated by phase-dependent convolutions of axial rotation and macroturbulence, which we designate as V_macrot. The behavior of V_macrot is remarkably uniform among the RRab stars, but the behavior of V_macrot among RRc stars varies strongly from star to star. The RRab stars exhibit an upper limit on V_macrot of 5 +/- 1 km/s with weak evidence of an anti-correlation with T_eff. The RRc minima range from 2 to 12 km/s. The abrupt decline in large rotations with decreasing T_eff at the blue boundary of the instability strip and the apparently smooth continuous variation among the RRab and RHB stars suggests that HB stars gain/lose surface angular momentum on time scales short compared to HB lifetimes. V_macrot values for our metal-poor RHB stars agree well with those derived by Fourier analysis of an independent but less metal-poor sample of Carney et al. (2008); they conform qualitatively to the expectations of Tanner et al. (2013). A general conclusion of our investigation is that surface angular momentum as measured by V_rot*sini is not a reliable indicator of total stellar angular momentum anywhere along the HB., AJ, accepted for publication

Aim: Our aim is to obtain high-accuracy measurements of the physical and orbital parameters of two evolved eclipsing binary systems, and to use these measurements to study their evolutionary status. We also aim to derive distances to the systems by using a surface brightness - colour relation and compare these distances with the measurements provided by GAIA. Methods: We measured the physical and orbital parameters on both systems based on V-band and I-band photometry from OGLE, near-infrared photometry obtained with the NTT telescope and the instrument SOFI, as well as high-resolution spectra obtained at ESO 3.6m/HARPS and Clay 6.5/MIKE spectrographs. The light curves and radial-velocity curves were analysed with the Wilson-Devinney code. Results: We analysed two double-lined eclipsing binary systems OGLE-BLG-ECL-23903 and OGLE-BLG-ECL-296596 from the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE) catalogue. Both systems have a configuration of two well-detached giant stars. The masses of the components ofOGLE-BLG-ECL-123903 are M_1= 2.045 $\pm$ 0.027 and M_2=2.074 $\pm$ 0.023 $M_\odot$ and the radii are R_1=9.540 $\pm$ 0.049 and R_2=9.052 $\pm$ 0.060 $R_\odot$. For OGLE-BLG-ECL-296596, the masses are M_1=1.093 $\pm$ 0.015 and M_2=1.125 $\pm$ 0.014 $M_\odot$, while the radii are R_1=18.06 $\pm$ 0.28 and R_2=29.80 $\pm$ 0.33 $R_\odot$. Evolutionary status was discussed based on the isochrones and evolutionary tracks from PARSEC and MESA codes. The ages of the systems were establishes to be around 1.3 Gyr for the OGLE-BLG-ECL-123903 and 7.7 Gyr for the OGLE-BLG-ECL-296596. We also determined the distance to both systems. For OGLE-BLG-ECL-123903 this is equal to d=2.95 $\pm$ 0.06 (stat.) $\pm$ 0.07 (syst.) kpc, while for the OGLE-BLG-ECL-296596 it is d=5.68 $\pm$ 0.07 (stat.) $\pm$ 0.14 (syst.) kpc. This is the first analysis of its kind for these unique evolved eclipsing binary systems., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

We present a new precision radial velocity (RV) dataset that reveals multiple planets orbiting the stars in the $\sim$360 AU, G2$+$G2 "twin" binary HD 133131AB. Our 6 years of high-resolution echelle observations from MIKE and 5 years from PFS on the Magellan telescopes indicate the presence of two eccentric planets around HD 133131A with minimum masses of 1.43$\pm$0.03 and 0.63$\pm$0.15 $\mathcal{M}_{\rm J}$ at 1.44$\pm$0.005 and 4.79$\pm$0.92 AU, respectively. Additional PFS observations of HD 133131B spanning 5 years indicate the presence of one eccentric planet of minimum mass 2.50$\pm$0.05 $\mathcal{M}_{\rm J}$ at 6.40$\pm$0.59 AU, making it one of the longest period planets detected with RV to date. These planets are the first to be reported primarily based on data taken with PFS on Magellan, demonstrating the instrument's precision and the advantage of long-baseline RV observations. We perform a differential analysis between the Sun and each star, and between the stars themselves, to derive stellar parameters and measure a suite of 21 abundances across a wide range of condensation temperatures. The host stars are old (likely $\sim$9.5 Gyr) and metal-poor ([Fe/H]$\sim$-0.30), and we detect a $\sim$0.03 dex depletion in refractory elements in HD 133131A versus B (with standard errors $\sim$0.017). This detection and analysis adds to a small but growing sample of binary "twin" exoplanet host stars with precise abundances measured, and represents the most metal-poor and likely oldest in that sample. Overall, the planets around HD 133131A and B fall in an unexpected regime in planet mass-host star metallicity space and will serve as an important benchmark for the study of long period giant planets., Accepted by AJ August 22, 2016, 33 pages

We report trigonometric parallaxes for 134 low mass stars and brown dwarfs, of which 38 have no previously published measurement and 79 more have improved uncertainties. Our survey targeted nearby targets, so 119 are closer than 30 pc. Of the 38 stars with new parallaxes, 14 are within 20 pc and seven are likely brown dwarfs (spectral types later than L0). These parallaxes are useful for studies of kinematics, multiplicity, and spectrophotometric calibration. Two objects with new parallaxes are confirmed as young stars with membership in nearby young moving groups: LP 870-65 in AB Doradus and G 161-71 in Argus. We also report the first parallax for the planet-hosting star GJ 3470; this allows us to refine the density of its Neptune-mass planet. One T-dwarf, 2MASS J12590470-4336243, previously thought to lie within 4 pc, is found to be at 7.8 pc, and the M-type star 2MASS J01392170-3936088 joins the ranks of nearby stars as it is found to be within 10 pc. In an effort to measure the masses of planets discovered by the NASA {\it K2} mission, we have conducted precise Doppler observations of five stars with transiting planets. We present the results of a joint analysis of these new data and previously published Doppler data. The first star, an M dwarf known as K2-3 or EPIC~201367065, has three transiting planets ("b", with radius $2.1~R_{\oplus}$; "c", $1.7~R_{\oplus}$; and "d", $1.5~R_{\oplus}$). Our analysis leads to the mass constraints: $M_{b}=8.1^{+2.0}_{-1.9}~M_{\oplus}$ and $M_{c}$ < $ 4.2~M_{\oplus}$~(95\%~conf.). The mass of planet d is poorly constrained because its orbital period is close to the stellar rotation period, making it difficult to disentangle the planetary signal from spurious Doppler shifts due to stellar activity. The second star, a G dwarf known as K2-19 or EPIC~201505350, has two planets ("b", $7.7~R_{\oplus}$; and "c", $4.9~R_{\oplus}$) in a 3:2 mean-motion resonance, as well as a shorter-period planet ("d", $1.1~R_{\oplus}$). We find $M_{b}$= $28.5^{+5.4}_{-5.0} ~M_{\oplus}$, $M_{c}$= $25.6^{+7.1}_{-7.1} ~M_{\oplus}$ and $M_{d}$ < $14.0~M_{\oplus} $~(95\%~conf.). The third star, a G dwarf known as K2-24 or EPIC~203771098, hosts two transiting planets ("b", $5.7~R_{\oplus}$; and "c", $7.8~R_{\oplus}$) with orbital periods in a nearly 2:1 ratio. We find $M_{b}$= $19.8^{+4.5}_{-4.4} ~M_{\oplus}$ and $M_{c}$ = $26.0^{+5.8}_{-6.1}~M_{\oplus}$....., 20 pages, 14 figures, 10 tables. Accepted by ApJ

We present a comprehensive chemical abundance analysis of five red giants and two horizontal branch (HB) stars towards the southern Galactic bulge, at (l,b)$\sim$(0$^{\rm o}$,-11$^{\rm o}$). Based on high-resolution spectroscopy obtained with the Magellan/MIKE spectrograph, we derived up to 23 chemical element abundances and identify a mixed bag of stars, representing various populations in the central regions of the Galaxy. Although cosmological simulations predict that the inner Galaxy was host to the first stars in the Universe, we see no chemical evidence of the ensuing massive supernova explosions: all of our targets exhibit halo-like, solar [Sc/Fe] ratios, which is in contrast to the low values predicted from Population III nucleosynthesis. One of the targets is a CEMP-s star at [Fe/H]=-2.52 dex, and another one is a moderately metal-poor ([Fe/H]=-1.53 dex) CH star with strong enrichment in s-process elements (e.g., [Ba/Fe]=1.35). These individuals provide the first contenders of these classes of stars towards the bulge. Four of the carbon-normal stars exhibit abundance patterns reminiscent of halo star across a metallicity range spanning -2.0 to -2.6 dex, i.e., enhanced $\alpha$-elements and solar Fe-peak and n-capture elements, and the remaining one is a regular metal-rich bulge giant. The position, distance, and radial velocity of one of the metal-poor HB stars coincides with the old trailing arm of the disrupted Sagittarius dwarf galaxy. While their uncertain proper motions prohibit a clear kinematic separation, the stars' abundances and distances suggest that these metal-poor candidates, albeit located towards the bulge, are not of the bulge, but rather inner halo stars on orbits that make them pass through the central regions. We report the discovery of ASASSN-15lh (SN 2015L), which we interpret as the most luminous supernova yet found. At redshift z = 0.2326, ASASSN-15lh reached an absolute magnitude of M_{u,AB} = -23.5+/-0.1 and bolometric luminosity L_bol = (2.2+/-0.2)x 10^45 ergs s^-1, which is more than twice as luminous as any previously known supernova. It has several major features characteristic of the hydrogen-poor super-luminous supernovae (SLSNe-I), whose energy sources and progenitors are currently poorly understood. In contrast to most previously known SLSNe-I that reside in star-forming dwarf galaxies, ASASSN-15lh appears to be hosted by a luminous galaxy (M_K ~ -25.5) with little star formation. We present an analysis of a new detached eclipsing binary, OGLE-LMC-ECL-25658, in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The system consists of two late G-type giant stars on an eccentric orbit and orbital period of ~200 days. The system shows total eclipses and the components have similar temperatures, making it ideal for a precise distance determination. Using multi-color photometric and high resolution spectroscopic data, we have performed an analysis of light and radial velocity curves simultaneously using the Wilson Devinney code. We derived orbital and physical parameters of the binary with a high precision of < 1 %. The masses and surface metallicities of the components are virtually the same and equal to 2.23 +/- 0.02 M_sun and [Fe/H] = -0.63 +/- 0.10 dex. However their radii and rates of rotation show a distinct trace of differential stellar evolution. The distance to the system was calculated using an infrared calibration between V-band surface brightness and (V-K) color, leading to a distance modulus of (m-M) = 18.452 +/- 0.023 (statistical) +/- 0.046 (systematic). Because OGLE-LMC-ECL-25658 is located relatively far from the LMC barycenter we applied a geometrical correction for its position in the LMC disc using the van der Marel et al. model of the LMC. The resulting barycenter distance to the galaxy is d_LMC = 50.30 +/- 0.53 (stat.) kpc, and is in perfect agreement with the earlier result of Pietrzynski et al.(2013)., accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journal

We present a precise and accurate measurement of the distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud based on late-type eclipsing-binary systems. Our results provide curently the most accurate zero point for the extragalactic distance scale.

A preliminary distance etimate to SMC 108.1.14904, a long-period eclipsing binary in the Small Magellanic Cloud, is presented. The binary system contains two bright, non-active G-type giants. Its orbital period is 185 days and the orbit is circular. Using surface brightness calibration, we obtain a distance modulus to the system of (m-M)= 19.02 ± 0.04 (statistical) ± 0.05 (systematic) mag, where the systematic error is dominated by uncertainties in the surface brightness calibration. This is a second eclipsing binary in the SMC analysed by our team.

There are roughly 25 very metal-poor (VMP; [Fe/H] < -2.0), highly r-process-enhanced (‘r-II’; [Eu/Fe] > + 1.0) stars currently known, discovered over the past 20+ years. These stars provide nearly pure signatures of r-process events early in the Galactic history. We are conducting a high-resolution follow-up survey of RAVE and other bright targets to identify a total of > 100 r-II stars. Our pilot runs on the du Pont 2.5-m at Las Campanas Observatory and the ARC 3.5-m at Apache Point Observatory have already identified up to fourteen new r-II stars. We are continuing our high-resolution follow-up efforts to constrain the astrophysical site(s) and nature of the r-process.

We have derived the absolute proper motion (PM) of the globular cluster M55 using a large set of CCD images collected with the du Pont telescope between 1997 and 2008. We find (μα cos δ, μδ) = (—3.31 ± 0.10, —9.14 ± 0.15) mas yr ―1 relative to background galaxies. Membership status was determined for 16 945 stars with 14 < V < 21 from the central part of the cluster. The PM catalogue includes 52 variables, of which 43 are probable members of M55. This sample not only is dominated by pulsating blue straggler stars, but also includes five eclipsing binaries, three of which are main-sequence objects. The survey also identified several candidate blue, yellow and red straggler stars belonging to the cluster. We detected 15 likely members of the Sgr dSph galaxy located behind M55. The average PM for these stars was measured to be (μα cos δ, μ δ ) = (―2.23 ± 0.14, ―1.83 ± 0.24) mas yr ―1 .

It is unknown whether or not low-mass stars can form at low metallicity. While theoretical simulations of Population III (Pop III) star formation show that protostellar disks can fragment, it is impossible for those simulations to discern if those fragments survive as low-mass stars. We report the discovery of a low-mass star on a circular orbit with orbital period P = 34.757 +/- 0.010 days in the ultra metal-poor (UMP) single-lined spectroscopic binary system 2MASS J18082002--5104378. The secondary star 2MASS J18082002--5104378 B has a mass M_2 = 0.14_{-0.01}^{+0.06} M_Sun, placing it near the hydrogen-burning limit for its composition. The 2MASS J18082002--5104378 system is on a thin disk orbit as well, making it the most metal-poor thin disk star system by a considerable margin. The discovery of 2MASS J18082002--5104378 B confirms the existence of low-mass UMP stars and its short orbital period shows that fragmentation in metal-poor protostellar disks can lead to the formation and survival of low-mass stars. We use scaling relations for the typical fragment mass and migration time along with published models of protostellar disks around both UMP and primordial composition stars to explore the formation of low-mass Pop III stars via disk fragmentation. We find evidence that the survival of low-mass secondaries around solar-mass UMP primaries implies the survival of solar-mass secondaries around Pop III primaries with masses 10 M_Sun < M_Star < 100 M_Sun.
