Frailty is a health concern for many adults with intellectual disability and should be measured to detect at-risk conditions, monitor disease, plan treatment, and gauge mortality. This descriptive pilot study evaluated measurement consistency (inter-rater agreement) of the Intellectual Disability-Frailty Index Short Form among multiple assessors with 20 adults (M age = 48.3 years) who had intellectual and multiple disabilities. Agreement percentages were computed for (a) non-frail, pre-frail, and frail categories derived from total index scores, and (b) each of 17 deficits listed on the form. Low average inter-rater agreement (<85%) was obtained on the index frail categories, several of the assessed deficits had acceptable inter-rater agreement (84.2-100%), while the majority of deficits were associated with moderate-to-low agreement percentages. Though research supports the Intellectual Disability-Frailty Index Short Form as a valid and practical frailty assessment instrument, our findings suggest that full-scale inter-rater agreement must be improved by adding more specificity to the form, clarifying instructions for assessors, and providing competency-based training in assessment implementation.

Abstract A fascinating aspect of nanoscale ferroelectric materials is the emergence of topological polar textures, which include various complex and stable polarization configurations. The manipulation of such topological textures through external stimuli like electric fields holds promise for advanced nanoelectronics applications. There are, however, several challenges to reach potential applications, among which reliably creating and controlling these textures at the nanoscale on silicon, and with lead-free compounds. We report the realization of epitaxial BaTiO3 nanoislands on silicon, with a lateral size as small as 30-60 nm, and demonstrate stable center down-convergent polarization domains that can be reversibly switched by an electric field to center up-divergent domains. Piezoresponse force microscopy data reconstruction and phase field modeling give insight into the 3D patterns. The trapezoidal-shape nanoislands give rise to center down-convergent lateral swirling polarization component with respect to the nanoisland axis, which prevents the formation of bound charges on the side walls, therefore minimizing depolarization fields. The texture resembles a swirling vortex of liquid flowing into a narrowing funnel. Chirality emerges from the whirling polarization configurations. The ability to create and electrically manipulate chiral whirling polar textures in BaTiO3 nanostructures grown monolithically on silicon holds promise for applications in future topological nanoelectronics.

Abstract Annual outbreaks of Lassa fever have resulted in a public health threat in Nigeria and other endemic countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. While the Lassa Virus (LASV) is endemic in rodent populations, zoonotic spillover to humans causes annual outbreaks. This study reviewed the burden of Lassa fever (LF) in Nigeria between 2020 and 2023 and conducted a cross-sectional survey of Nigerians to evaluate their risk perceptions of LF. During the period under review, 28,780 suspected and 4,036 confirmed cases of LF were reported from 34 of the 37 states of Nigeria. These cases resulted in 762 deaths (a CFR of 18.9%). The overall case positivity rate was 14% (4,036/28,780), with more positive cases in 2020 (17.5%, n = 1,189/6,791). A total of 2,150 study participants were enrolled in the prospective cross-sectional study, with most of them (87.5%, n = 1,881/2,150) having previously heard of Lassa fever (LF). The numerical scoring system revealed that 35.43% (n = 762/1,881) of those aware of LF have poor knowledge of its preventive measures, route of transmission, and control measures. Approximately 6.84% (n = 147/2,150) of them were at a high risk of contracting LF, with 27.6% (n = 584/2,150) of study participants feeling concerned about contracting LF because of the presence of rodents in their immediate vicinity, occupational exposure to healthcare workers, and the probability of contamination of food by infected rodents without necessary food safety measures. Abstract Background Black people are disproportionately affected by structural and social determinants of health, resulting in greater risks of exposure to and deaths from COVID-19. Structural and social determinants of health feed vaccine hesitancy and worsen health disparities. Objective This scoping review explored interventions that have been employed to address vaccine hesitancy among Black population outside of African and Caribbean countries. This review provides several strategies for addressing this deep-rooted public health problem. Methods The scoping review followed the five-step framework outlined by Arksey and O’Malley. It complies with reporting guidelines from the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR). Research studies that examined interventions utilized to promote vaccine confidence within Black populations living outside of African and Caribbean countries were reviewed. Findings A total of 20 articles met the inclusion criteria for this study: 17 were quantitative studies and three were mixed-method studies. This scoping review highlighted six themes: educational advancement, messaging, multi-component approaches, outreach efforts, enhancing healthcare access, and healthcare provider leadership. Conclusion The review identified effective interventions for addressing vaccine hesitancy among Black populations outside Africa and the Caribbean, emphasizing education, multidimensional approaches, and healthcare provider recommendations. It calls for more qualitative research and interventions in countries like Canada and the UK to enhance vaccine confidence and reduce mistrust.

Background: Some adults with intellectual disabilities do not acquire oral feeding skills and are dependent on gastrostomy tube supplementation. Methods: Two adults with intellectual and multiple disabilities received intervention for oral consumption during daily meals (standardised food and liquid quantities, individualised procedural guidelines, and consumption-contingent consequences) while the frequency and amount of gastrostomy tube feedings were gradually decreased and eliminated. Results: Compared to baseline (pre-intervention) conditions, the adults increased oral consumption of food and liquid during the intervention and gastrostomy tube supplementation was eliminated. These intervention results continued through multiyear follow-up, one participant lost considerable weight, the second participant maintained weight, and both participants had good health (no hospitalisations, illnesses, and missed medications) and benefited from eating daily meals among their peers. Conclusions: Behaviourally-based intervention with interdisciplinary collaboration and appetite stimulation strategy can establish and improve oral feeding in adults with intellectual and multiple disabilities who were previously gastrostomy tube dependent.

ObjectiveTo summarize the evidence on how socio-economic status and intimate partner violence (IPV) are interrelated among adolescents and young women (AYW) in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA).MethodsOnline databases such as MEDLINE, Embase, PsycIFO, CINAHL, Cochrane Central, Sociological Abstracts, Web of Science, and the African Index Medicus were used to identify studies published between 2015 and 2022. The reporting procedure was the Preferred Reporting Item for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) as a checklist extension for the scoping review.ResultsThe majority of the publications, ten (62.5%) were cross-sectional studies, while four (25%) were qualitative studies and two (12.5%) were mixed methods studies. The review found that lack of financial resources exposed AYW to all forms of violence ranging from physical, sexual, emotional, psychological, and economic violence. Nonetheless, financial reliance on a partner poses a long-term threat to AYW employment and financial stability.ConclusionSocio-economic status influences the level of IPV experienced by AYW in many countries of SSA, while evidence of the long-term effects remains uncovered. To achieve Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 1, which focuses on ending poverty in all forms by 2030, socio-economic inequalities caused by IPV among AYW require prompt interventions.

Contract farming (CF) is a sort of vertical integration in agricultural commodity chains that provides a business with strong control over several operational processes, including the production process, the features of the items, quantity, quality, and timeliness of project execution. Birds were first domesticated by humans as farm animals, and as a result, many years ago, the contemporary practice of raising birds began with the harvesting of their eggs and young from their natural habitat. The Nigerian poultry industry falls into three main categories: small-, medium-, and large-scale, which are also referred to as backyard, semi-commercial, and commercial respectively. Contract farming emerged as an alternative to traditional or spot marketbased agricultural production and was introduced into Nigeria under a variety of business names, including CHI, AMO, ANIMAL CARE, and ZARTECH, among others. Nigeria consumes 192.69 MT of poultry meat and egg products annually, resulting in enormous environmental impacts that have not been adequately addressed because of the growing use of contract farming. Contract farming has always received a lot of attention from academics and policymakers. Even though contract farming acknowledges the transfer of technology, prospects for increased revenue, and improved access to inputs, a great deal of research has focused on the risks that smallholder farmers face. In recent years, debate has erupted regarding the benefits and dangers of factory poultry production considering rising awareness of the challenges it poses to public health and the environment. This review reveals that backyard flocks of chickens can thrive independently of large-scale poultry operations. Survival traits including tiny size, hardiness, sluggish growth, low mature body weight, tolerance, or resistance to common local disease organisms and parasites define local chickens.

Introduction: Unintended pregnancies constitute one of the major public health problems of important concern in Nigeria, where sex refusal in marriage might be impossible. This descriptive, household-based study, investigated the prevalence and predictors of unintended pregnancy in the past two years among married women aged 35-49 years in Ibadan, South West, Nigeria. Methods: A three-stage sampling technique was used to recruit 425 respondents across three local government areas. Data were collected and analyzed using a structured interviewer-administered questionnaire. The dependent variable, “Unintended pregnancy,” was defined as an unplanned, unwanted, or mistimed pregnancy. Data were summarized using descriptive statistics. Bivariate chi-square tests were used to determine the factors associated with unintended pregnancy, while binary logistic regression was used to determine the predictors of unintended pregnancy (α0.05). Results: The mean age of the women was 41.1 ± 4.2 years, 149 (35.1%) had high autonomy, while 233 (54.8%) had medium autonomy. Further, 177 (41.6%) were poor, while 106 (25.0%) were rich. In all, 108 (25.4%) women have had an unintended pregnancy. Women with low autonomy (AOR=3.41, 95%C.I.=1.70-6.82, p=0.001) and medium autonomy (AOR=2.41, C.I.=1.29-4.49, p=0.006) had higher odds of unintended pregnancy. The likelihood of unintended pregnancy was higher among women living in poor households (AOR=2.04, 95%C.I.=1.13-3.68, p=0.017). Conclusions: The level of unintended pregnancy was high among older women of reproductive age in Ibadan. Social interventions that focus on empowerment of such women should be undertaken by governmental agencies, non-governmental agencies, and community-based organizations to increase women’s autonomy and reduce unintended pregnancy among them.

The complex nature of the steel manufacturing environment, characterized by different types of hazards from materials and large machinery, makes the need for objective and automated monitoring very critical to replace the traditional methods, which are manual and subjective. This study explores the feasibility of implementing computer vision for safety management in steel manufacturing, with a case study implementation for automated hard hat detection. The research combines hazard characterization, technology assessment, and a pilot case study. First, a comprehensive review of steel manufacturing hazards was conducted, followed by the application of TOPSIS, a multi-criteria decision analysis method, to select a candidate computer vision system from eight commercially available systems. This pilot study evaluated YOLOv5m, YOLOv8m, and YOLOv9c models on 703 grayscale images from a steel mini-mill, assessing performance through precision, recall, F1-score, mAP, specificity, and AUC metrics. Results showed high overall accuracy in hard hat detection, with YOLOv9c slightly outperforming others, particularly in detecting safety violations. Challenges emerged in handling class imbalance and accurately identifying absent hard hats, especially given grayscale imagery limitations. Despite these challenges, this study affirms the feasibility of computer vision-based safety management in steel manufacturing, providing a foundation for future automated safety monitoring systems. Findings underscore the need for larger, diverse datasets and advanced techniques to address industry-specific complexities, paving the way for enhanced workplace safety in challenging industrial environments.

Essential oils are natural feed additives that improve animal health and enhance their performance. This study investigated the effects of the rumen infusion of five essential oil blends (EOBs) on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, rumen fermentation parameters, and rumen metabolome and metabolic pathways in Black Angus cows. Using a 6 × 6 Latin Square experimental design, a 90-day study was conducted with six cattle. A daily dosage of 4 mL of EOBs was administered during each infusion. Volcano plot analyses between the control (CON) and each of the EOBs (EOB1, EOB2, EOB3, EOB4, and EOB5) revealed several differentially abundant (p ≤ 0.05; absolute fold change ≥1.5) metabolites. The EOB5 treatment exhibited the most significant impact, with 26 differentially abundant metabolites, including elevated valine and reduced gallic acid. Volatile fatty acids (VFAs), including valerate, isobutyrate, and isovalerate, were significantly increased (p < 0.05). GHG emissions were not significantly affected, but a numerical decrease was observed in the animals infused with the EOB5 treatment. Ammonia nitrogen concentrations remained within the suitable range for rumen microbes’ growth, indicating a normal internal environment for microbial crude protein synthesis. In conclusion, the study has demonstrated that the direct infusion of EOBs significantly improved the generation of VFAs and impacted the energy production, protein synthesis, and microbial activity of the animals.

This study leverages Shotgun metagenomics to assess the rumen microbial community and functionality in Angus bulls with differing residual feed intake-expected progeny difference (RFI-EPD) values, aiming to elucidate the microbial contributions to feed efficiency. Negative RFI-EPD bulls (NegRFI: n=10; RFI-EPD= -0.3883 kg/d) and positive RFI-EPD bulls (PosRFI: n=10; RFI-EPD=0.2935 kg/d) were selected from a group of 59 Angus bulls (average body weight (BW) = 428 ± 18.8 kg; 350 ± 13.4 d of age) fed a high-forage total mixed ration after a 60-d testing period. At the end of the 60-d period, rumen fluid samples were collected for bacterial DNA extraction and subsequent shotgun metagenomic sequencing. Results of the metagenome analysis revealed greater gene richness in NegRFI bulls, compared to PosRFI. Analysis of similarity revealed a small but noticeable difference (P =0.052; R-value = 0.097) in the rumen microbial community of NegRFI and PosRFI bulls. Linear Discriminant Analysis effect size (Lefse) was utilized to identify the differentially abundant taxa. The Lefse results showed that class Fibrobacteria (LDA = 5.1) and genus Fibrobacter (LDA = 4.8) were greater in NegRFI bulls, compared to PosRFI bulls. Relative abundance of the carbohydrate-active enzymes was also compared using Lefse. The results showed greater relative abundance of glycoside hydrolases and carbohydrate-binding modules such as GH5, CBM86, CBM35, GH43, and CBM6 (LDA > 3.0) in NegRFI bulls whereas GH13 and GT2 were greater in PosRFI bulls. The distinct metabolic and microbial profiles observed in NegRFI, compared to PosRFI bulls, characterized by greater gene richness and specific taxa such as Fibrobacter, and variations in carbohydrate-active enzymes, underscore the potential genetic and functional differences in their rumen microbiome. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the interplay between rumen microbiota and feed efficiency in Angus bulls, opening avenues for targeted interventions and advancements in livestock management practices.

Owing to the rapid increase in data demand, the need for power saving in mobile communication is of great importance. This study proposes a combination of a zone-based technique, also known as the Zonal Based GrEEn (ZBGrEEn) algorithm, with the Lempel Ziv Welch (LZW) data compression algorithm in order to produce significantly more energy- efficient device-to-device (D2D) communication network. The system is modeled as a device- to-device communication between one primary transmitter (PT) and many primary receivers (PRs) located in various zones around the PT. The ZBGrEEn algorithm ensures that power allocation is optimally performed so that the target rate of each application needed by PRs is met. Both the transmission time and transmission power computed in the ZBGrEEn algorithm are minimized due to the reduced data size achieved by applying the LZW algorithm on the data. Simulation results show an increase in battery lifetime of mobile devices from 46.28% (achieved when ZBGrEEn algorithm is used alone) to 51% when ZBGrEEn is combined with LZW algorithm.

Research on grocery shopping channel preferences has been growing in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. However, few studies have utilized the discrete choice experiment (DCE) to elicit choices in hypothetical scenarios. Moreover, attitudinal factors, which may better explain preference heterogeneity, are rarely considered. Given that the evolution of shopping behavior in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic has huge implications for transportation planning and modeling, this study aims to examine consumers’ grocery shopping channel preferences through a DCE that was constructed with three grocery shopping channels (home delivery, curbside pickup, and in-store) and five time–cost attributes (product price, shopping time, delivery time, delivery cost, and travel time). 8 603 responses were elicited from 1 229 Florida residents between February and April 2021. Information on various aspects of respondents’ shopping attitudes as well as their socio-demographic and household attributes, grocery shopping activities, and distance to the grocery store were also collected. Using mixed logit modeling for analyses, results indicate that individuals with low education, in low- to middle-income earning households, with three or more household vehicles, and having full access to a vehicle tended to prefer in-store shopping. Also, perceived security risk, pro-alternative mobility options, pro-local store shopping, and shorter distances to grocery stores predisposed individuals toward in-store shopping. Alternatively, females, young and middle-aged individuals, workers, and individuals in large households tended to prefer home delivery and curbside pickup. Technology savviness, pro-environment, pro-online shopping, and shopping enjoyment were also drivers of home delivery and curbside pickup purchases, while cost and time consciousness did not show significant effects. Overall, the findings in this study have implications for retailers, transportation planners, and policymakers.

Construction workers exposed to extreme heat in hot and humid climates are at risk of heat stress and heat-related illnesses. Although several studies have been conducted on heat stress research in the construction industry, only a few have focused on safety training and its effects on improving the knowledge of the construction workforce. This study examines the effects of training on the knowledge of the future construction workforce for heat stress prevention. The training was conducted for the future construction workforce (i.e., undergraduate construction senior students). Pre-tests and post-tests were administered before and after the training to determine the trainees’ knowledge. In addition, self-assessment surveys were administered after the training to evaluate trainees’ perception of knowledge improvement through the training. The questions of the tests and assessment were designed to ascertain the participants’ knowledge of the risk factors, types of heat-related illnesses, and prevention strategies. The results illustrate an overall significant positive impact of training on the participants’ knowledge and ability to protect themselves from heat stress.

This study focused on exploring the metabolomic profiles of crossbred beef cattle with varying levels of residual feed intake (RFI), a measure of feed efficiency in beef cattle. Sixty-seven crossbred growing beef steers (BW = 277 ± 29.7 kg) were subjected to a high-forage total mixed ration for 64 days to determine their RFI phenotypes. At the end of the 64d feeding trial, beef steers were divided into two groups based on their RFI values: low (or negative)-RFI beef steers (n = 28; RFI = −1.08 ± 0.88 kg/d) and high (or positive)-RFI beef steers (n = 39; RFI = 1.21 ± 0.92 kg/d). Blood samples were collected, and plasma samples were analyzed using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopy, resulting in the identification of 50 metabolites. The study found a distinct metabolomic signature associated with RFI status. Eight metabolites, including amino acids (tyrosine, glycine, valine, leucine, and methionine) and other compounds (dimethyl sulfone, 3-hydroxy isovaleric acid, citric acid, creatine, and L-carnitine), showed differential abundance between low- and high-RFI groups. Specifically, tyrosine, glycine, and dimethyl sulfone exhibited significant specificity and sensitivity, which produced a discriminatory model with an area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve of 0.7, making them potential markers for RFI. A logistic regression model incorporating these biomarkers effectively distinguished between high- and low-RFI steers, with a threshold cutoff point of 0.48, highlighting a distinctive metabolite profile associated with efficient nutrient utilization in low-RFI cattle. The logistic regression model, incorporating these biomarkers, holds promise for accurately categorizing RFI values, providing insights into the metabolic basis of feed efficiency in beef cattle.
