Rapidly changing permafrost landscapes are a potential key terrestrial source of greenhouse gases (GHGs) at a global scale, yet, remain poorly characterized regarding GHG origins and environmental controls on emissions. Subsurface ice wedges, commonly found across many permafrost landscapes, harbor GHG‐rich gas bubbles. Analyzing these bubbles aids comprehension of subzero temperature GHG formation in permafrost. The Batagay megaslump, Earth's largest known thaw slump in northern Yakutia, provides an opportunity to study mixing ratios and isotopic compositions of both GHGs and non‐GHG in ice wedge samples from two stratigraphic units: the Upper Ice Complex (UIC) and the Lower Ice Complex (LIC). The Ar/N2/O2 compositions and bubble shapes indicated that the studied ice wedges were likely formed through dry snow and/or hoarfrost compaction, and microbial activity remained active after ice wedge formation. The high CO2 and CH4 mixing ratios and carbon stable isotope values suggested that CO2 and CH4 primarily originated from microbial sources. N2O showed an "exclusive relation" with CH4—meaning that high N2O is observed only when CH4 is low, and vice versa—and N2O mixing ratios vary at different depths. These findings suggest that GHG formation in ice wedges is not solely controlled by physiochemical conditions, but involves a complex interplay between microbial activity and environmental conditions. Accelerator mass spectrometry radiocarbon (AMS 14C) dating was used for determining the age of wedge ice. It has been found that between 11,270 and 6420 cal BP, or the Greenlandian and Northgrippian stages of the Holocene, ice wedges grew syngenetically in sandy deposits with gravel in the Chara River valley. The variations of δ18O values in the ice wedges are about 8‰, from –25.5‰ to –18.8‰. Based on the stable isotope composition of ice wedges, paleotemperature reconstructions revealed that the mean January temperature was as low as –38°C during the coldest periods of the early half of the Holocene and as high as –28°C during the warmer periods. Abrupt thaw of ice‐rich permafrost in the Arctic Foothills yielded to the formation of hillslope erosional features. In the infrastructure corridor, we observed thermal erosion and thaw slumping that self‐healed near an embankment. To advance our understanding of processes between infrastructure and hillslope erosional features (INF‐HEF), we combined climate and remote sensing analyses to field investigations to assess an INF‐HEF system and validate our findings in a broader area along the infrastructure corridor. We identified that thaw consolidation along an embankment formed a thermokarst ditch that was ubiquitous in the broader study area, and which was extensively affected by shrubification and supported other positive feedback (e.g., snow accumulation, water impoundment, and weakened vegetation mat). The thermokarst ditch facilitated channelization of cross‐drainage water, thus increasing the terrain vulnerability to thermal erosion that evolved into thaw slumping after heavy rainfalls. The terrain resilience to thaw slumping benefited from the type of ground ice and topography prevailing at our site. The lateral discontinuity of massive ice in an ice‐wedge polygonal system (i.e., interchange soil and massive ice) compounded to a low‐slope gradient with topographic obstacles (e.g., baydzherakhs) decreased slumping activity and supported self‐stabilization. Ice wedges are a characteristic ground ice feature in permafrost regions that form primarily from the meltwater of the seasonal snowpack. Ice‐wedge oxygen and hydrogen stable isotopes have been used in winter paleotemperature reconstructions; however, until recently, the ion geochemistry of ice wedges has rarely been analyzed as a potential paleoclimate proxy. This potential is greatest for ice wedges located in coastal regions, where marine aerosols are the dominant contributor to snowpack impurities. Here, we evaluate the source and integrity of ionic concentrations of a coastal ice wedge in the northwestern Canadian Arctic (Beaufort Sea coast) to evaluate the use of ice wedges as a marine aerosol archive. Comparison to a regionally comparable snowpack reveals remarkably similar ionic concentrations for Cl−, Na+, Br−, SO42−, Ca2+, and Mg2+, with a Cl−/Na+ ratio similar to bulk seawater (1.80 vs. 1.79 in seawater), suggesting that marine aerosols, probably from sea salt aerosol production during blowing snow events over sea ice as indicated by depleted SO42− values relative to Na+, are probably the dominant contributor to ion concentrations. A previously established linear age model for the ice wedge is used to develop a continuous ion record spanning ~4,600 to ~700 yr b2k. Cl− and Na+ concentrations reveal a strong and continuous increase in concentrations over the late Holocene, thought to be driven by reduced distance‐to‐coast of up to 1 km as a result of coastal erosion. Ice wedges are considered as a paleoarchive of winter air temperatures as their stable isotope composition has been widely used to reconstruct winter climatic conditions in the Arctic regions. Ice wedge stable isotope records, obtained in recent decades for many Arctic permafrost areas of Russia and North America, demonstrate a clear shift from lower to higher values between the Late Pleistocene and Holocene (by 5–10‰ for δ18O values in some regions of the Russian Arctic), which is widely accepted as evidence of winter air temperature increase. However, the evolution of winter air temperatures during the Holocene is less clear and, according to proxy reconstructions, winter climate trends are not synchronous and may significantly vary throughout the Arctic. In this study, we investigate the stable isotope composition of Holocene syngenetic ice wedges and modern ice veinlets of northwestern Siberia. Radiocarbon dating of enclosing sediments and a few dates of organic material from ice wedges demonstrate that ice wedges grew constantly within the study area during the Holocene though early–mid‐Holocene in northwestern Siberia is often considered as a thermal optimum. In fact, many proxy records indicate an increase of summer air temperatures followed by thermokarst activity, peatland formation, and northward advance of the treeline. According to our data, winter climate conditions in terms of mean air temperature of the coldest winter month (January) did not change significantly during the key Holocene stages, and during the Greenlandian and most of the Northgrippian stages (between 11.4 and 6 cal ka BP) mean January air temperature (TmJ) varied between −21 and −30°C, and from the end of the Northgrippian, during the Meghalayan stages of Holocene (5.2–0.9 cal ka BP), TmJ varied between −24 to −28°C. Mean January air temperature during the Holocene was generally 1–2°C lower than the modern one, meanwhile the submeridional direction of TmJ isotherms and eastward decrease of TmJ values in Holocene are similar to the modern pattern. The dynamics of evapotranspiration (ET), such as the partitioning to evaporation and transpiration, of polygonal ground on the Arctic Coastal Plain are not well understood. We assessed ET dynamics, including evaporation and transpiration partitioning, created by microtopographic features associated with high- and low-centered polygons. Chamber ET and leaf-level transpiration measurements were conducted in one-week field campaigns in two growing seasons with contrasting weather conditions. We found that ET was greater in the drier and warmer sampling period (2013) compared to the colder and wetter one (2014). Evaporation dominated ET, particularly in the wetter and colder sampling period (>90% in 2014 vs. 80% in 2013). In the 2013 sampling period, wetter and warmer conditions increased ET and the contribution of transpiration to ET. If the soils warm with degrading permafrost, ET and the fraction contributed by transpiration may increase to a certain threshold, when moisture must increase with rising temperatures to further increase these fluxes. While the fraction of transpiration may rise with warmer soils, it is unlikely that transpiration will completely dominate ET. This work highlights the complexities of understanding ET in this dynamic environment and the importance of understanding differences across polygonal ground.

Heterogeneous ice wedges were studied within the peatland of the drained lake on the Pur‐Taz interfluve (67°20′14.8″, 078°55′47.1″, Northwest Siberia). The elements of the ice‐wedge structure were identified: young ice wedge, shoulders, selvages, closed‐cavity ices, and ice lenses in a peatland. Different genetic types of ice (ice vein, congelation ice, and segregated ice) were revealed by analyzing the elements of the ice‐wedge structure under polarized light and analyzing their chemical compositions. Genetic types of the ice indicate the different mechanisms of ice‐wedge formation. The ice vein forms due to fast bilateral freezing of primarily meltwater in a thermal contraction crack. The congelation ice forms due to the slow freezing of free water that has accumulated into a thermokarst cavity. The segregated ice forms due to pore water migration to the freezing zone. The elements of the ice‐wedge structure have variable stable isotope values (δ18O from −13.5‰ to −21.9‰ and δD from −87.7‰ to −154.6‰). The high range of deuterium excess values (13.8‰ to 32‰) indicates fractionation at condensation. The mean winter paleotemperature calculated using Vasil'chuk's equations for the ice‐wedge pats formed by the ice veins varied in the range of −18 to −22°C, which is not very different from current values and is consistent with the isotopic data of ice wedges from nearby regions of Northwest Siberia. The paleotemperature average error can equal 4.5°C if we ignore the data on the ice petrographic analysis. The error depends on where and how the ice wedges are sampled, because of varying genetic types within the ground ice. This could lead to different palaeoclimatological interpretations. After the Elatina glaciation of Snowball Earth, at least four distinct glacial advances and sea-level retreats punctuated Ediacaran time: Gaskiers glaciation (580 Ma), Fauquier glaciation (571 Ma), Bou-Azzer glaciation (566 Ma) and Hankalchough glaciation (551 Ma). Tillites or diamictites are commonly controversial, but periglacial paleosols with distinctive physical structure and degree of chemical weathering offer supporting evidence of glaciation and sea-level change useful for stratigraphic correlation. This paper reviews glacial advances of the Ediacaran stratotype and other sequences, and also reveals the value of paleosols and chemical index of alteration to understand the upper Squantum and Brookline members of the Roxbury Conglomerate near Boston, Massachusetts. The Boston Bay ice wedges are periglacial paleosols, and evidence of maritime glacial climate like that of modern coastal Greenland and Arctic Canada. Simple discoidal vendobiont fossils (Aspidella terranovica) in the Dorchester Member of the Roxbury Conglomerate and in the Cambridge Argillite are in heterolithic shale–siltstone facies that are interpreted as intertidal to shallow marine environments. Local marine transgressions and other paleosols showing significant chemical weathering represent temperate interglacial paleoclimates. Short glacial advances affecting climate and sea-level enable subdivision of the Ediacaran Period. Four distinct glacial advances and sea-level retreats punctuated Ediacaran time: Gaskiers (580 Ma), Fauquier (571 Ma), Bou-Azzer (566 Ma), Hankalchough (551 Ma). The aim of the study was to establish the period of accumulation of peatland with ice wedges near Vorkuta town based on series of calibrated radiocarbon dates, to anchor in time the isotope-oxygen curve of syngenetic ice wedge from peatland and to reconstruct the mean January air temperature for the appropriate Holocene period. Analysis of a series of 14C dates showed that peatland near Vorkuta was actively formed between 10.5 and 6 cal. ka BP. Winter conditions in the Vorkuta area were quite severe, that favored to frost cracking of the peatland and syngenetic growth of ice wedges within the drier sites and peat-soil wedges within the watered sites. Ice wedge growth was the most active within the Greenlandian Stage of Holocene, between 10,5 and 9,7 cal. ka BP, the reconstructed mean January air temperature for this period varied between −23 and −25 oC; currently, such temperatures are recorded only during the coldest winters.

Recent excavation in the new CRREL Permafrost Tunnel in Fox, Alaska provides a unique opportunity to study properties of Yedoma — late Pleistocene ice- and organic-rich syngenetic permafrost. Yedoma has been described at numerous sites across Interior Alaska, mainly within the Yukon-Tanana upland. The most comprehensive data on the structure and properties of Yedoma in this area have been obtained in the CRREL Permafrost Tunnel near Fairbanks — one of the most accessible large-scale exposures of Yedoma permafrost on Earth, which became available to researchers in the mid-1960s. Expansion of the new ∼4-m-high and ∼4-m-wide linear excavations, started in 2011 and ongoing, exposes an additional 300 m of well-preserved Yedoma and provides access to sediments deposited over the past 40,000 years, which will allow us to quantify rates and patterns of formation of syngenetic permafrost, depositional history and biogeochemical characteristics of Yedoma, and its response to a warmer climate. In this paper, we present results of detailed cryostratigraphic studies in the Tunnel and adjacent area. Data from our study include ground-ice content, the stable water isotope composition of the variety of ground-ice bodies, and radiocarbon age dates. Based on cryostratigraphic mapping of the Tunnel and results of drilling above and inside the Tunnel, six main cryostratigraphic units have been distinguished: 1) active layer; 2) modern intermediate layer (ice-rich silt); 3) relatively ice-poor Yedoma silt reworked by thermal erosion and thermokarst during the Holocene; 4) ice-rich late Pleistocene Yedoma silt with large ice wedges; 5) relatively ice-poor fluvial gravel; and 6) ice-poor bedrock. Our studies reveal significant differences in cryostratigraphy of the new and old CRREL Permafrost Tunnel facilities. Original syngenetic permafrost in the new Tunnel has been better preserved and less affected by erosional events during the period of Yedoma formation, although numerous features (e.g., bodies of thermokarst-cave ice, thaw unconformities, buried gullies) indicate the original Yedoma silt in the recently excavated sections was also reworked to some extent by thermokarst and thermal erosion during the late Pleistocene and Holocene.

Ice wedges in the Holocene deposits of alases and floodplains have been studied in the Kolyma Lowland region. Most ice wedges have been found within alases dated to between 11 and 4.2 cal kyr BP, corresponding to the Greenlandian and Northgrippian stages of the Holocene. This study confirms that the greatest intensity of ice wedge growth occurred during ~10.5–6 cal kyr BP. A decrease in their growth was mainly caused by alas draining and reduced sedimentation. In the last 4–4.5 cal kyr BP (defined as the Meghalayan stage of the Holocene), ice wedges continued to grow in old alases, sometimes as a younger generation, as well as within young alases and floodplains of the Kolyma River and its tributaries. Mean January air temperatures were quite stable during the Holocene and varied usually approximately between −33 and −41°C, with a slight cooling during the Meghalayan stage. Minor variations in mean January air temperature may indicate a stability of winter climate of northern Yakutia, probably as a result of the stable influence of the Siberian anticyclone. Structure of arctic peatlands with massive ice and structure-forming ice were studied in drained lake («khasyrey») of the Pur-Taz interfluves (the north of West Siberia). The period of accumulation of two-meter thickness of the peat was established to be changed from 8413±90 to 897±90 years BP. Composition of the peat deposits is represented by Betula nana, Sphagnum sp., Vaccinium oxycoccos, Eriophorum sp., Equisetum sp. The massive ice is represented by ice wedges with large shoulders and young ice wedges. The central part of the ice wedge is composed by recrystallized crystals of ice veins. Melting zones (elongated crystals of segregated ice and closed-cavity ice) were found in the shoulders of the ice wedge and in the upper part of the young ice wedge. Young ice wedges in the central and lateral parts the main wedge have a similar structure in the cross-section, but they are built by different genetic types of ice: the ice veins or closed-cavity ice with segregated ice. Ice-rich peat contains different types of ice inclusions and subhorizontal ice belts and ice lenses. Ice lenses in the peat can be formed by the segregated ice and/or infiltrated-segregated ice. The hydrochemical composition of the ice wedges, ice lenses, surface water samples and the aqueous extract from peat was analyzed. Hydrochemical analysis did show that polygonal-core ice has basically similar composition with the present-day atmospheric precipitation and surface waters of the polygonal bath; in the area of the shoulder – the composition is intermediate between the ground waters of peat and the central part of the vein. The hydrochemical composition of the ice lenses is similar to the composition of the lake water and peat underlying the active layer. The methane concentrations and its distribution within the ice wedges, peat and lens ice were determined. The closed-cavity ice doesn’t contain methane; the ice wedges with ice veins have minimal methane concentrations; large ice lenses have differentiation of methane concentrations. High concentrations of methane are typical for the frozen peat with inclusions of closed-cavity ice in the uppermost part of permafrost layer; the maximum methane concentration was determined inside the peat with ice lenses. The heterogeneous ices inside the ice wedges, distribution of hydrochemical compounds and methane distribution were conditioned by dynamics of the melting depth during the peatland formation under changing climate of the Holocene in the Arctic.

Relevance of the research. Information on composition, ice content and geochemical characteristics of frozen rocks is necessary for exploration of oil and gas condensate fields of Yamal, Gydan and Taimyr. Among the factors determining the tundra landscapes ecology of the cryolithozone, underground ice and their melting have great importance. The hydrochemical composition and rare-earth elements content in syngenetic ice wedge retain the information on the moisture sources and conditions of their formation. The main ions correlation and rare-earth elements distribution in the ice composition can be used to estimate the influence of such natural factors as precipitation, sea and volcanic aerosols and anthropogenic pollution. The main aim of the research is to identify chemical elements sources and to assess the impact of the ice type on hydrochemical composition and rare-earth elements distribution in different genetic types of ice – wedge, seasonal and firn ice. Objects: ice wedge, sediments rocks, seasonal ice, surface water, taken in expeditions Earth Cryosphere Institute, Tyumen scientific centre SB RAS in 2009–2014. Methods of chemical research: inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, atomic absorption spectrometry, emission photometry, chromatography. Results. It is established that marine and continental aerosols influenced the chemical composition of ice wedge studied in the coastal zone of the key areas of Belyj island, Sibiryakova island, Western Yamal and Western Taimyr. Fresh and ultrafresh syngenetic ice wedge is formed by freezing melt water, which contains snow-sorbed sea aerosols – suspended in the atmosphere solid and liquid particles. Ice wedge in the lake Sokhonto area long-distanced from the sea has no signs of marine influence according to the main ions content. Ice wedge with mineral inclusions was formed not only due to snow melt water with aerosols of continental origin, but also due to the suprapermafrost water. It was found out that lanthanide content in water-soluble form has increased in comparison with both сlark values and the content in the modern surface ice. In the most of examined syngenetic ice wedge the participation of marine aerosols is confirmed taking into account the cerium anomaly. Moreover according to the distribution of rare-earth elements the correlation between light and heavy rare-earth elements typical for ice wedge, equal to 0,9, and correlation between lanthanum and the other lanthanides, equal to 0,2, are observed. Sea ice inherits the mineralization and composition of sea water. Lake ice varies in depth and reflects seasonal changes in hydrochemical composition of ice and increases in concentration of marine aerosols in the snow covering the lake ice. Firn ice of the polar Urals has a very low mineralization, there are no impurities of sea aerosol. The natural mechanism of rare earth elements accumulation in water-soluble form in combination with iron, thorium and yttrium is implemented in ice wedge of the Holocene and Neopleistocene. Melting out ice wedge may lead to the flow of rare-earth elements in the surface water.

The syngenetic ice and ice-ground composite veins in khasyrey (alas) and interalas plateaus were studied on the second lake-alluvial terrace located in the North of the Gydan Peninsula near the village of Gyda. On the basis of the radiocarbon dating, the time of formation of deposits containing veins from was established – from 16 640 to 854 BP. The peat deposits are mainly represented by the following species: Carex sp., Eriophorum sp., Betula nana, Equisetum sp., Calamagrostis sp., Vaccinium vitis-idaea, Drepanocladus sp., Empetrum sp., Vaccinium uliginosum, Rubus arcticus, Petasites sp. It is established that the polygonal-veined ice of khasyrey and interalas plateaus, except for vertical-striped «clean» ice, contain areas with vertical wavy streaks of ice-ground. Ice of elementary veins and segregation ice were revealed in the composition of veins according to structural and textural features in polarized light. Elementary ice veins compose «clean» ice sections of veins and segregation ice which are their ice-ground sections. Elementary veins are indicative of the predominance of the process of frost cracking during the formation of polygonal-vein ices. The presence of inclusions of ice-ground in the structure of veins points is evidence of a manifestation of local thermokarst processes under the growth of polygonal-vein ice. Ice-ground veins were formed by repeated thawing of the initial ice veins. The formation of ice-ground veins during syngenetic freezing of sediments of the second lake-alluvial terrace is related to uneven manifestation of thermokarst in different facies situations and and climate changes at the Early Pleistocene and Holocene.

Simulations with a one‐dimensional heat transfer model (TONE) were performed to reproduce the near surface ground temperature regime in the four main types of soil profiles found in Narsajuaq River Valley (Nunavik, Canada) for the period 1990–2100. The permafrost thermal regime was simulated using climate data from a reanalysis (1948–2002), climate stations (1989–1991, 2002–2019) and simulations based on climate warming scenarios RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 (2019–2100). The model was calibrated based on extensive field measurements made between 1989 and 2019. The results were used to estimate when soil thermal contraction cracking will eventually stop and to forecast the melting of ice wedges due to active‐layer thickening. For the period 1990–2019, all soil profiles experienced cracking every year until 2006, when cracking became intermittent during a warm period before completely stopping in 2009–2010, after which cracking resumed during colder years. Ice‐wedge tops melted from 1992 to 2010 as the active layer thickened, indicating that top‐down ice‐wedge degradation can occur simultaneously with cracking and growth in width. Our predictions show that ice wedges in the valley will completely stop cracking between 2024 and 2096, first in sandy soils and later in soils with thicker organic horizons. The timing will also depend on greenhouse gas concentration trajectories. All ice wedges in the study area will probably experience some degradation of their main body before the end of the century, causing their roots to become relict ice by the end of the 21st century. In the past three decades, an abrupt, pan‐Arctic acceleration of ice wedge melting has transformed tundra landscapes, spurring the formation of hummock‐like features known as high‐centered polygons (HCPs). This rapid geomorphic transition profoundly alters regional hydrology and influences surface emissions of CO2 and CH4. In Arctic Alaska, most recent instances of ice wedge degradation have arrested within 15–20 years of inception, stabilizing HCP microtopography. However, feedbacks between ground surface deformation and permafrost stability are incompletely understood, limiting our capacity to predict trajectories of landscape evolution in a still warmer future. Here, we use field data from a site near Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, to develop a modeling‐based framework for assessing the strength of positive (i.e., exacerbating) feedbacks on ice wedge degradation, focusing on the importance of heterogeneity in surface drainage and microtopographic conditions. Our simulations suggest that, when troughs are narrow, positive feedbacks on ice wedge melting (associated with thermokarst pool formation) are relatively weak. Positive feedbacks are markedly stronger beneath wide troughs, such as those that form above older, larger ice wedges. Seasonal thaw abruptly accelerates once a talik begins to form beneath wide and deep thermokarst pools. Once a talik initiates, winter severity and snowpack thickness increase in importance as predictors of thaw intensity in summer. Our results indicate that meter‐scale heterogeneity in polygonal microtopography potentially exerts strong, nonlinear controls on thermokarst trajectories. These findings are useful for predicting future thermokarst dynamics and for interpreting the results from coarser‐resolution land surface models operating at greater spatial and temporal scales. Ice wedges differ from other types of surface and underground glacial bodies and are widely spread in perennially frozen sub-Arctic regions, but the bacterial and archaeal diversity in these permafrost features remains poorly studied. Here, we compared the prokaryotic community composition in the active layer and ancient, 13–19 kyr BP and ~ 40 kyr BP, ice wedge horizons from the same exposure profile of the Mammoth Mountain, using pyrosequencing 16S rRNA gene. The most abundant OTUs in the active layer were affiliated with Acidobacteria (31.81%) followed by Actinobacteria (18.29%), Proteobacteria (18.14%), Gemmatimonadetes (7.3%), Parcubacteria (7.13%) and Bacteroidetes (6.49%). The prokaryotic community in 13–19 kyr BP ice wedge differed at the phylum level by the predominance of Actinobacteria (29.15%) over Acidobacteria (19.52%), Proteobacteria (18.45%), Verrumicrobia (5.88%), Firmicutes (2.98%) and Gemmatimonadetes (2.87%). In contrast, the oldest (~ 40 kyr BP) ice wedge prokaryotic community was rather poor, and only three phyla Firmicutes (54.48%), Proteobacteria (31.42%) and Bacteroidetes (7.92%) constituted the major fraction of reads. Archaeal sequences contributed with no more than 0.6% to total reads in all studied samples. To assess the direct impact of climate change on ice‐wedge (IW) degradation, 16 sites in the Narsajuaq river valley (Nunavik, Canada) that were extensively studied between 1989 and 1991 were revisited in 2016, 2017 and 2018. In total, 109 pits were dug to record soil characteristics and IW shapes and depths. Changes in surface conditions were also noted using side‐by‐side comparisons of recent (2017) and older (1989–1991) land and aerial photographs. During the past 25 years, the active layer reached depths that were 1.2–3.4 times deeper than in 1991, which led to the widespread degradation of IWs in the valley. Whereas 94% of the IWs unearthed in 1991 showed multiple recent growth structures, only 13% of the 55 IWs unearthed in 2017 still had some upgrowth stages left. IW tops are now consistently deeper than the main stages of the IWs measured in 1991. In August 2017, however, about half of the IWs had ice veins connecting them to the base of the active layer, an indication that the recent cooling spell (2010 to present) in the region was enough to reactivate frost cracking and IW growth. To explore the possibility of using ground ice archives for studies of the cosmogenic radionuclide 10Be, we analyzed the beryllium isotopes in ice wedges exposed in the Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL) Permafrost Tunnel and the Barrow Permafrost Tunnel in Alaska. We determined the concentrations of 10Be and 9Be in samples pretreated following two procedures: acidification before (procedure A) and after (procedure B) removal of particles. The 10Be and 9Be concentrations spanned wide ranges. Concentrations in procedure A samples were higher than those in procedure B samples. The 10Be/9Be ratios fell within a narrow range, and values from CRREL (about 8.5 × 10−9) and Barrow (about 7 × 10−9) were of the same order of magnitude. Further studies are needed to validate our findings and assess the feasibility of using the 10Be/9Be ratio of syngenetic ice wedges for reconstruction of 10Be variations due to cosmogenic and environmental changes, and radiometric dating of ice-wedge sequences that contain very old (beyond 1 Ma) ice. For atmospheric gases and aerosols, snow and ice provide a useful archive of paleoenvironmental history. In the northern hemisphere, this archive has been largely limited to Greenland ice, but promising pioneering work has been done recently using chronology of an ice wedge in Barrow, northern Alaska. Here, we investigate past aerosols at the same ice-wedge sampling site, reconstructing the sea-ice fluctuations in the adjacent Beaufort Sea during the Bølling/Allerød (BA) and Younger Dryas (YD) periods. We confirm the integrity of methanesulfonate ion (MS−) concentrations in the BIWS as marine proxies, and then find that the ice wedge has a high MS− concentration through the beginning (coldest) YD periods. The high MS− concentration indicates that even during the coldest YD periods (12,900–12,700 yrBP), the near-shore region in the Alaskan Beaufort Sea near Barrow may not have been completely filled by permanent sea ice. • This is the first investigation of Pleistocene marine environment using an ice wedge. • Bromine and methanesulfonate ions are proxies of sea-ice fluctuations. • Permanent sea ice might not cover the near-shore Beaufort Sea during Younger Dryas. Greenhouse gases (GHGs) trapped in ice wedges may provide useful information on biogeochemical environments in ground ice. Previous studies have reported highly elevated CO2 and CH4 mixing ratios in ice wedges. However, N2O mixing ratios in ice wedges remain unknown. Here, we present CO2, CH4 and N2O mixing ratios in bubbles and plausible mechanisms of GHG formation for two lakeside ice wedges at Cyuie village near Yakutsk. The CO2 gas age corresponds to the Last Glacial Maximum (18–19 ka). The δ(N2/Ar) values and bubble shapes indicate that the ice wedges formed by dry snow compaction rather than snowmelt water refreezing, while the δ18O and δD values of the ice indicate changes in the source area location and/or the climate during the Last Glacial Maximum. Using a dry extraction method, we obtained gas mixing ratios of 7–13% CO2, 5–130 ppm CH4 and 100–5000 ppb N2O. The δ(O2/Ar) values imply that most of the O2 was consumed by biological respiration. The CH4 is negatively correlated with N2O and CO2. The N2O might have inhibited CH4 production. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As ice wedge degradation and the inundation of polygonal troughs become increasingly common processes across the Arctic, lateral export of water from polygonal soils may represent an important mechanism for the mobilization of dissolved organic carbon and other solutes. However, drainage from ice wedge polygons is poorly understood. We constructed a model which uses cross-sectional flow nets to define flow paths of meltwater through the active layer of an inundated low-centered polygon towards the trough. The model includes the effects of evaporation and simulates the depletion of ponded water in the polygon center during the thaw season. In most simulations, we discovered a strong hydrodynamic edge effect: only a small fraction of the polygon volume near the rim area is flushed by the drainage at relatively high velocities, suggesting that nearly all advective transport of solutes, heat, and soil particles is confined to this zone. Estimates of characteristic drainage times from the polygon center are consistent with published field observations.

The dynamics of evapotranspiration (ET), such as the partitioning to evaporation and transpiration, of polygonal ground on the Arctic Coastal Plain are not well understood. We assessed ET dynamics, including evaporation and transpiration partitioning, created by microtopographic features associated with high- and low-centered polygons. Chamber ET and leaf-level transpiration measurements were conducted in one-week field campaigns in two growing seasons with contrasting weather conditions. We found that ET was greater in the drier and warmer sampling period (2013) compared to the colder and wetter one (2014). Evaporation dominated ET, particularly in the wetter and colder sampling period (>90% in 2014 vs. 80% in 2013). In the 2013 sampling period, wetter and warmer conditions increased ET and the contribution of transpiration to ET. If the soils warm with degrading permafrost, ET and the fraction contributed by transpiration may increase to a certain threshold, when moisture must increase with rising temperatures to further increase these fluxes. While the fraction of transpiration may rise with warmer soils, it is unlikely that transpiration will completely dominate ET. This work highlights the complexities of understanding ET in this dynamic environment and the importance of understanding differences across polygonal ground.

The stable oxygen isotope composition of Late Holocene syngenetic ice wedges from the Erkutayakha River valley in the Yamal Peninsula and from the Adventdalen valley in Svalbard was studied. It was demonstrated that the studied ice wedges located 2000 km apart were formed during the last 2-3.5 ka and continue to grow at present. Variations of δ18O values of the ice of both ice wedges do not exceed 2-3.5‰. Based on the oxygen isotope variations is has been calculated that mean winter air temperatures did not change by more than 3oC during the Late Holocene.

Abstract: Trough ponds are ubiquitous features of Arctic landscapes and an important component of freshwater aquatic ecosystems. Permafrost thaw causes ground subsidence, creating depressions that gather water, creating ponds. Permafrost thaw also releases solutes and nutrients, which may fertilize these newly formed ponds. We measured water budget elements and chloride, ammonium, and dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) across a chronosequence of trough ponds representing different stages of ice wedge degradation and stabilization. We developed a coupled hydrologic and biogeochemical model to explore how ice wedge degradation affects hydrology and nutrient availability in trough ponds in the advanced degradation stages (DAs), which are characterized by deep troughs with warmer temperatures relative to the other stages. DAs experienced greater evaporation than the other stages, and subsurface inflows entered the DAs from a wide area. Chloride accumulated in the ponds with time since thaw, implying that subsurface fluxes are delivering solutes from the thawing permafrost. Ammonium accumulated at high rates in the initial degradation stage and was seasonally depleted over the summer in all degradation stages. Ammonium trends in the DAs were consistent with high concentration inflows and in‐pond assimilation at rates between 0.37 and 2.0 mg N m−2 day−1. Seasonal DON trends indicated that the accumulation of recalcitrant organic matter may eventually limit aquatic ecosystem production and foster pond infilling. These results provide direct evidence of nutrient release from thawing permafrost and the utilization of these nutrients by Arctic trough pond ecosystems and highlight infilling as a mechanism by which Arctic surface waters may be lost. Abstract: Twelve years of continuous monitoring of diverse ground properties reveals the dynamics of three ice wedges and adjacent ground in a low‐centered polygon area in Svalbard. The monitoring documented ground displacements, the timing of crack generation, ground thermal and moisture conditions from the surface to the top permafrost, and snow conditions. The focus is on seasonal ground deformation in and around ice‐wedge troughs, interannual variability of ice‐wedge activity and thermal thresholds for ice‐wedge cracking. Seasonal ice‐wedge activity is mainly associated with frost heave and thaw settlement, as well as thermal expansion and contraction. In mid‐ to late winter, temporary expansion and cracking of troughs by thermal contraction occurs during rapid cooling periods. Following intensive ground microcracking events, troughs show rapid expansion and in some cases major cracking in the frozen active layer. A common threshold for cracking is identified by a combination of ground surface cooling below −20°C and a thermal gradient steeper than −10°C m−1 in the upper meter of ground, indicating that cracking requires both a brittle frozen layer and rapid ground cooling. Our results highlight that in marginal thermal conditions for ice‐wedge activity, the primary control on ice‐wedge cracking is rapid winter cooling enhanced by minimum snow cover. Syngenetic ice wedges have been investigated on Ayon Island. Their isotope composition and the geochemical characteristics of both ice wedges and enclosing sediments have been obtained; four ice-wedge stages have been distinguished. Paleo temperature reconstructions for Ayon Island and adjacent territories of northern Chukotka have been obtained based of these results. Almost identical trends in the distribution of ice-wedge isotope characteristics in the Arctic islands and in the lower reaches of the Kolyma River were observed, as well as differences in the magnitude of isotope oscillations during the transition from the Late Pleistocene to the Holocene compared to ice wedges of the Lower Kolyma region. High-centred polygonal terrain is a widespread feature of Arctic landscapes that is sensitive to increasing ground temperatures because of its high ground-ice content. Understanding spatial variation in the distribution and sensitivity of high-centred polygonal terrain is important for predicting landscape change. In the Tuktoyaktuk Coastlands, Northwest Territories, Canada, mean annual ground temperatures in permafrost have increased between 1 and 2°C over the last 40 years and high-centred polygonal terrain comprises about 10 per cent of the terrestrial landscape. To investigate factors affecting the distribution and potential degradation of ice wedges, we mapped high-centred polygonal terrain and ice-wedge melt ponds, and documented ice wedge related thermokarst at anthropogenic disturbances using 2004 aerial photographs. Historical melt pond distribution was assessed using 1972 aerial photographs. The density of polygonal terrain (up to 37%) was significantly higher in the northern than the southern part of the study area, where more abundant lacustrine sediments and lower ground temperatures have favoured ice-wedge development. Larger proportional melt pond area (0.68%), increases in pond area (up to 3.74%) and a higher frequency of major thermokarst activity following anthropogenic surface disturbance (54%) suggest that high-centred polygonal terrain in the northern part of the study area is more susceptible to degradation than in the southern part. Ice-wedge polygons are widespread and conspicuous surficial expressions of ground-ice in permafrost landscapes. Thawing of ice wedges triggers differential ground subsidence, local ponding, and persistent changes to vegetation and hydrologic connectivity across the landscape. Here we characterize spatio-temporal patterns of ice-wedge degradation since circa 1950 across environmental gradients on Alaska’s North Slope. We used a spectral thresholding approach validated by field observations to map flooded thaw pits in high-resolution images from circa 1950, 1982, and 2012 for 11 study areas (1577–4460 ha). The total area of flooded pits increased since 1950 at 8 of 11 study areas (median change +3.6 ha; 130.3%). There were strong regional differences in the timing and extent of degradation; flooded pits were already extensive by 1950 on the Chukchi coastal plain (alluvial-marine deposits) and subsequent changes there indicate pit stabilization. Degradation began more recently on the central Beaufort coastal plain (eolian sand) and Arctic foothills (yedoma). Our results indicate that ice-wedge degradation in northern Alaska cannot be explained by late-20th century warmth alone. Likely mechanisms for asynchronous onset include landscape-scale differences in surficial materials and ground-ice content, regional climate gradients from west (maritime) to east (continental), and regional differences in the timing and magnitude of extreme warm summers after the Little Ice Age.
