El trabajo de tesis doctoral aborda el estudio de cubiertas vegetadas en zonas áridas como alternativa tecnológica para incrementar las áreas verdes en medios construidos, atendiendo a que el enverdecimiento urbano constituye una estrategia viable en el marco del desarrollo sustentable. Sin embargo, su implementación impone desafíos derivados del establecimiento y permanencia de la vegetación a largo plazo dadas las fluctuaciones de temperatura diarias y estacionales, la limitada disponibilidad de agua, la exposición al viento, y la intensa radiación solar que pueden propiciar entornos hostiles para el crecimiento de las plantas. Dichas presiones tienen mayor impacto en regiones climáticas de alta vulnerabilidad ambiental, como es el caso de Mendoza - Argentina, debido a la ocurrencia de temperaturas extremas, bajos patrones de precipitación y, desuniforme distribución de las lluvias.En función de lo expuesto, la temática ha sido desarrollada en torno a dos ejes temáticos: a) Evaluación del comportamiento biológico de las especies que integran el paquete tecnológico a los fines de seleccionar especies vegetales apropiadas, de posible incorporación a los sistemas de naturación urbana y, b) Evaluación de la respuesta térmica de las cubiertas vegetadas a escala urbana y edilicia con el objeto de contribuir a disminuir las temperaturas urbanas y sus consecuentes impactos en la reducción de consumos de energía para alcanzar condiciones de confort en espacios interiores.Desde el punto de vista metodológico, la respuesta biológica de las especies fue evaluada mediante el análisis de la cobertura vegetal, conductancia estomática, consumo hídrico y su aporte en peso al sistema. Se realizaron ensayos experimentales en condiciones controladas, para un conjunto de 14 especies preseleccionadas en función de su aptitud teórica para integrar el paquete biológico de las cubiertas vegetadas en zonas áridas. La respuesta térmica fue evaluada en forma comparativa con cubiertas tradicionales en box de ensayos, en condiciones controladas y, mediante la predicción del comportamiento térmico de escenarios teóricos a escala edilicia y urbana. A tal fin se emplearon softwares de libre disponibilidad: EnergyPlus y ENVI-met.Los resultados obtenidos han demostrado una adaptación significativa al sistema de cultivo en cubiertas vegetadas de la especie exótica Aptenia cordifolia y dos especies nativas Hyalis argentea y Nassella tenuissima. Esto se debe a que alcanzaron coberturas vegetales superiores al 70%; respuesta positiva al riego en base a su administración de la apertura estomática y diferencias de temperatura de hoja; al aprovechamiento del agua de lluvia y al mínimo o intermedio consumo hídrico. Por último, desarrollaron un reducido peso adicional sobre la capacidad portante de las cubiertas. Desde el punto de vista térmico, los ensayos experimentales en prototipos a escala, mostraron que la incorporación de cubiertas vegetadas permite disminuir la temperatura media interior entre 2 y 3 ºC y la amplitud térmica entre 7 y 9 ºC, durante la estación cálida para zonas áridas. En consecuencia, se alcanza el objetivo propuesto respecto de lograr diseños de cubiertas vegetadas que sean eficientes en la mejora de las condiciones de habitabilidad térmica de los espacios interiores, bajo las condiciones climáticas imperantes. Por último, las simulaciones con EnergyPlus demostraron que la temperatura media interior del caso con cubierta tradicional aislada mejora la situación de base -cubierta sin aislar-, y esta mejora aumenta levemente con una cubierta vegetada con Aptenia cordifolia. Con respecto al ahorro energético, se alcanzan reducciones del orden del 50 % respecto al consumo del caso base con cubierta tradicional sin aislar, y de un 11 % respecto al caso base con cubierta aislada. Y, a escala urbana, el uso de cubiertas vegetadas respecto a cubiertas con membranas de aluminio ofrece disminuciones de temperatura en relación directa a la densidad constructiva, siendo más eficientes en entornos de alta densidad. De lo descripto se desprende que la incorporación de nuevas tecnologías verdes -cubiertas vegetadas- apropiadas a contextos urbanos de alta heliofanía y baja disponibilidad del recurso hídrico, constituye una estrategia de desarrollo urbano-edilicio sustentable, que contribuye a disminuir los consumos energéticos a escala edilicia, fortalecer las condiciones ambientales de las ciudades de zonas áridas, y mitigar el calentamiento global a escala macro. This thesis addresses the study of roofs in arid regions as a technological alternative to increase green areas in built-up areas, taking into account that urban greening constitutes a viable strategy within the framework of sustainable development. However, its implementation imposes challenges derived from the establishment and permanence of vegetation in the long term given the daily and seasonal temperature fluctuations, the limited availability of water, the exposure to the wind, and the intense solar radiation that can cause hostile environments for the growth of the plants. These pressures have greater impact in climatic regions of high environmental vulnerability, as is the case of Mendoza - Argentina, due to the occurrence of extreme temperatures, low precipitation patterns and, uneven distribution of rainfall. Based on the above, the theme has been developed around two thematic axes: a) Evaluation of the biological behavior of the species that make up the technological package in order to select appropriate plant-species, of possible incorporation to the systems of urban nature and; b) Evaluation of green roofs thermal response at urban and building scale, in order to help reduce urban temperatures and their consequent impacts on the reduction of energy consumption to achieve comfort conditions in indoor spaces. Methodologically, the biological response of the plant-species was evaluated through the analysis of vegetation cover, stomatal conductance, water consumption and its contribution in weight to the system, in experimental tests under controlled conditions. Experimental tests were done under controlled conditions, for 14 preselected plantspecies according to their theoretical aptitude to integrate the biological package of green roofs in arid zones. The thermal response was evaluated comparatively with traditional roofs in test boxes, under controlled conditions. It also was predicted the thermal behavior of theoretical scenarios at the building and urban scale using freely available software: Energy Plus and ENVI-met. The results obtained have shown a significant adaptation to the growth media in green roofs, vegetated with the exotic species named Aptenia cordifolia and two native species, Hyalis argentea and Nassella tenuissima. This is due to the fact that they reached vegetable cover higher than 70%; positive response to irrigation based on their administration of the stomatal opening and leaf temperature differences; to the use of rainwater and to the minimum or intermediate water consumption; and, finally, to the reduced weight that they add to the carrying capacity of the roofs. From the thermal point of view, the experimental tests showed that the incorporation of green roofs allows reducing the average interior temperature between 2 and 3 ºC and the thermal amplitude between 7 and 9 ºC during the summer season for arid zones. Consequently, the proposed objective with respect to achieving designs of green roofs that are efficient in improving the thermal habitability conditions of the interior spaces, under the prevailing climatic conditions is reached. Finally, the simulations with EnergyPlus showed that the internal temperature of the case with traditional isolated cover improves the base situation - covered without isolating -, and this improvement increases slightly with a green roofs with Aptenia cordifolia. With respect to energy saving, reductions of around 50% are achieved with respect to the consumption of the base case with traditional uninsulated roof, and of 11% with respect to the base case with isolated roof. On the urban scale, the use of green roofs and the aluminum membrane roofs offers decreases in temperature in direct relation to the building density, being more efficient in high-density environments. From the above it is clear that the incorporation of new green technologies -green roofsappropriate to urban contexts with high heliophany and water resources shortage is a sustainable urban-development strategy, which contributes to reduce energy consumption at the building scale, strengthen the environmental conditions of cities in arid zones, and mitigate global warming on a macro scale.
