There are two methods generally used for calibration of micropipettes: the gravimetric method described in ISO 8655-6:2002 and the photometric method described in ISO 8655-7:2005. In order to validate the photometric method, several micropipettes of different capacities from 0.1 µL to 1000 µL were calibrated using both methods (gravimetric and photometric) in two different laboratories, IPQ (Portuguese Institute for Quality) and Artel. These tests were performed by six different operators. The uncertainty for both methods was determined and it was verified that the uncertainty component that has a higher contribution to the final uncertainty budget depends on the volume delivered. In the photometric method for small volumes, the repeatability of the pipette is the largest uncertainty component, but for volumes, larger than 100 µL, the photometric instrument is the most significant source of uncertainty. Based on all the results obtained with this study, one may consider the photometric method validated.

Objectives Microflow measurement devices are used in several science and health applications, mainly drug delivery. In the last decade, several new methods based on optical technology were developed, namely the front tracking and interferometric method, in which the knowledge of the inner diameter of the syringe or the capillary used is critical. Only a few National Metrology Institutes (NMIs) can perform inner diameter measurements below 1 mm, which requires expensive technology. Therefore, IPQ, in cooperation with CETIAT, CMI and UNIDEMI, under the EMPIR project 18HLT08 MeDDII – Metrology for Drug Delivery, developed new measurement methods for small inner diameter tubes based on the gravimetric principle and optical methods in order to simplify the apparatus used for this type of measurements without increasing uncertainty. Methods The gravimetric experimental setup consists of measuring the liquid volume on a specific length of the glass tube. The optical method used is based on the front track principle that uses a high-resolution camera and ImageJ software, to determine the diameter at both ends of each capillary. Results To validate the developed methods, a comparison was performed between CETIAT, CMI and IPQ and the results obtained were all consistent. Conclusions This work allowed the determination of inner diameter of syringes or capillaries using two different methods with relative expanded uncertainties from 0.1 to 0.5% (k=2), that can be applied for flow measurements using optical technology.

Apesar de raros, surgem cada vez mais casos de cancro na gravidez, possivelmente pela degeneração celular associada ao aumento da idade materna ou talvez pela exposição ambiental a fatores de risco. Deste modo, o objetivo deste relatório é descrever o desenvolvimento de competências comuns e específicas de enfermeira especialista nos vários contextos de aprendizagem assim como as estratégias promotoras do cuidar destas mulheres. A teoria de enfermagem que orienta e sustenta a minha prática de cuidados é “O Modelo de Adaptação” de Callista Roy. Considera-se a grávida um sistema holístico com capacidade de adaptação às diferentes condicionantes da vida e o enfermeiro especialista o agente facilitador dessas mesmas adaptações (Roy & Andrews, 2001). Centrada na prática baseada na evidência e na questão “Quais as estratégias do enfermeiro especialista no cuidar da grávida com cancro?”. Como metodologia foi realizada a revisão scoping de acordo com as orientações do Joanna Briggs Institute (Aromataris & Munn, 2020) e realizadas entrevistas a 4 enfermeiros. Verificou-se que a evidência disponível é escassa, os enfermeiros especialistas consideram como principais estratégias utilizadas a comunicação e articulação com outros profissionais, apresentando ainda algumas limitações no cuidar. Conclui-se que é fundamental a realização de reuniões de equipa multidisciplinar e investir na realização de formação e mais investigação. Although rare, the number of women diagnosed with cancer during pregnancy is increasing, perhaps due to cellular degeneration associated with advanced-age pregnancy or caused by environment exposure to cancer risk factors. The key objective of the research here reported is developing both shared and specific competencies for clinical midwife nurse specialists, in all learning aspects, as promoters of well-being when caring for pregnant women with cancer. The developed practice was guided and theoretically supported by “Adaptation Model of Nursing” from Callista Roy. The pregnant woman is therefore considered a holistic system capable of adapting to the different limitations life presents and the specialist nurse as the facilitating agent of those adaptations (Roy & Andrews, 2001). Centered in evidence-based practice and questioning which strategies should a specialist nurse employ when caring for a pregnant woman with cancer, we based the methodology for this report in the evidence-based practice, having performed a scoping revision according to Joanna Briggs Institute’s guidelines (Aromataris & Munn, 2020) and four interviews with specialist nurses. After examining the limited available information on the topic, we concluded that specialist nurses identify communication as a key strategy when caring for expecting women with cancer, along with alignment and cooperation with other Health professionals. Nevertheless, research revealed significant limitations on the current ability to care for these patients. We concluded that multidisciplinary team meetings are paramount and further investment is needed for training and research alike

Syringe pumps are commonly used for drug delivery in hospitals and clinical environments. These instruments are critical in neonatology and oncology, where any variation in the flow rate and drug dosing quantity can lead to severe incidents and even death of the patient. Therefore it is very important to determine the accuracy and precision of these devices using the suitable calibration methods. The Volume Laboratory of the Portuguese Institute for Quality (LVC/IPQ) uses two different methods to calibrate syringe pumps from 16 nL/min up to 20 mL/min. The Interferometric method uses an interferometer to monitor the distance travelled by a pusher block of the syringe pump in order to determine the flow rate. Therefore, knowing the internal diameter of the syringe with very high precision, the travelled distance, and the time needed for that travelled distance, it was possible to calculate the flow rate of the fluid inside the syringe and its uncertainty. As an alternative to the gravimetric and the interferometric method, a methodology based on the application of optical technology was also developed to measure flow rates. Mainly this method relies on measuring the increase of volume of a drop over time. The objective of this work is to compare the results of the calibration of two syringe pumps using the different methodologies described above. The obtained results were consistent for the three methods used. The uncertainties values were very similar for all the three methods, being higher for the optical drop method due to setup limitations.

This work performed under MeDDII project has received funding from the EMPIR programme co-financed by the Participating States and from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme. The precise measurement of micro and nanoflow of incompressible liquids (below 1 μL/h) is a complex task due to several factors involved in, namely, evaporation, adsorption and the existence of air bubbles within the system. Nevertheless, the importance of its measurement is undeniable in equipment such as insulin pumps, or medical drug delivery devices for new-born, microchip flow pumps, to mention few. The work herein presented was developed in a partnership between the Volume and Flow Laboratory (LVC) of the Portuguese Institute of Quality (IPQ) and the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (DEMI) of The New University of Lisbon under the project MeDD II – Metrology for Drug Delivery. It had the main objective of conceiving a new Portuguese standard for the measurement of ultra-low flow using interferometry, with a target uncertainty of 1% (k = 2). Therefore, the new setup relies on an interferometer made up of a laser unit, two retroreflector cubes, one beam splitter, as well as a flow generator (a Nexus syringe pump) and a computer for data acquisition. Experimental tests on a Flow generator and a Coriolis flow meter were carried out at different flow rates. In this paper we present the theory and the experimental setup used to transfer a standard frequency, to synchronize two clocks linked by an optical fiber. In order to verify the accuracy on frequency transfer over fiber link, we prepared an experiment that allows testing the performance of the setup for a variable set of environmental conditions, namely associated to temperature and vibration variations. The experimental setup shows the fiber optic link between one laboratory, where the standard frequency is generated, and another laboratory, where the equipment for simulating temperatures and vibrations are installed. The standard frequency, traceable to UTC(IPQ), is used to modulate two lasers with different wavelength,, injected in the optical fiber. At the end of the optical fiber the signals will be out of phase due to the inherent chromatic dispersion, which is also dependent on the temperature of the propagation media. Measuring the phase variations, caused by temperature gradients in the fiber, we can compensate the frequency transfer and synchronize the clocks. Evaluating all uncertainty components in this model, allows the metrological characterization of the synchronization and obtain the associated uncertainty of this quantity.

A gestão dos efluentes provenientes da produção de azeite tem sido conduzida por aplicação de diversos tratamentos físico-químicos e biológicos, bem como a utilização no solo. No entanto, o mecanismo mais utilizado continua a ser o armazenamento em lagoas e a evaporação natural nos períodos mais quentes do ano. Este trabalho consistiu na caracterização das águas residuais de um lagar de sistema contínuo de duas fases situado na região do Baixo Alentejo e no desenvolvimento de processos inovadores de precipitação química (ácida, básica e com compostos de ferro) e processos de oxidação química (com peróxido de cálcio, peroxido de hidrogénio e hipoclorito de sódio). Estes efluentes apresentavam propriedades ácidas com pH entre 4–5, cor escura, cheiro intenso e desagradável, carência química de oxigénio (CQO) entre 7000-8000 mg.L-1, e os seguintes teores médios de nutrientes: 210,6 mg.L-1 de cálcio, 73,2 mg.L-1 de magnésio e 1049,7 mg.L-1 de fósforo. Além disso, estas águas residuais exibiam uma condutividade elétrica (CE) média de 2,69 dS.m-1 e um teor de fenóis totais de 540,4 mg de equivalentes de ácido gálico.L-1. Estes processos foram, no geral, eficazes na redução da turvação (8,2- 100%), CQO (1,3-57,9%), fósforo total (2,1-95,2%) e fenóis totais (14,4-94,0%), no entanto o efluente tratado apresentou aumento do teor de magnésio e condutividade elétrica.

Durante gerações, o mundo pareceu tão infinito que era quase impossível que os seus recursos terminassem. No entanto, o impacto da atividade das pequenas e médias empresas (PMEs) no ambiente tem vindo a revelar-se exponencialmente negativo, considerando que estas empresas não têm tido em conta práticas ambientais e sustentáveis durante os seus processos, estratégias ou visão a longo prazo. É crucial que a maior fatia da economia mundial comece por optar por uma conduta mais ecológica, no sentido de garantir um futuro melhor para as gerações vindouras. Apesar dos esforços de melhoria, as PMEs não têm sido bemsucedidas, uma vez que esta temática caracteriza-se por uma grande subjetividade e amplitude nas suas diversas vertentes. O presente estudo pretende abordar estas questões, através da aplicação integrada de técnicas de mapeamento cognitivo com a abordagem Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). Com base em sessões de grupo envolvendo um painel de empresários e especialistas ambientais, e assumindo uma abordagem construtivista, foi criado, testado e validado um índice de mensuração de conduta ecológica para PMEs, revelando resultados promissores na identificação das PMEs mais ecológicas. As vantagens e as limitações da proposta metodológica apresentada são também discutidas. For generations, the world seemed so large that it was almost impossible that its resources would end. However, the impact of SMEs’ activity on the environment has proved to be negative, since these companies have not, for the most part, taken into account environmental and sustainable practices in their processes, strategies or long-term vision. Therefore, it is crucial that SMEs should start to adopt more ecological behavior, in order to ensure a better future for generations to come. Despite their efforts, SMEs have not been successful in this regard, in part because of the subjectivity of the issue, and the fact that a variety of aspects need to be taken into account. The current study aims to address these issues, through the integrated application of cognitive mapping techniques and the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). Based on group sessions involving a panel of environmental experts and entrepreneurs, and taking on a constructivist approach, a green index for the SMEs was created, tested and validated, revealing promising results in the identification of the most ecological SMEs. The advantages and limitations of the methodological proposal presented are also discussed.

Fermentative protein hydrolysates (FPH) were prepared with a proteolytic bacterium, Bacillus strain exhibiting high proteolytic activity. Three FPH with 1, 2, and 4 % of cod protein hydrolysate (CPH) and 0.5 % of yeast extract in the culture were prepared. The yields achieved varied between 30 and 58 % based on protein content. A general decrease of leucine, isoleucine, valine, alanine, arginine, threonine, proline, and glutamic acid was observed. All FPHs showed higher reducing power and DPPH radical scavenging activity than CPH, but similar ABTS radical scavenging activity. However, FPHs exhibited lower Cu(+2)-chelating activity than CPH. The ACE inhibitory activity of FPHs was not improved relatively to that recorded in CPH. The fermentative process seems to have potential to obtaining hydrolysates with improved biological activities or even to produce protein hydrolysates from native fish proteins.

Passive films were grown in potentiodynamic mode, by cyclic voltammetry on AISI 316 and AISI 304 stainless steels. The composition of these films was investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The electrochemical behaviour and the chemical composition of the passive films formed by cyclic voltammetry were compared to those of films grown under natural conditions (by immersion at open circuit potential, OCP) in alkaline solutions simulating concrete. The study included the effect of pH of the electrolyte and the effect of the presence of chloride ions. The XPS results revealed important changes in the passive film composition, which becomes enriched in chromium and depleted in magnetite as the pH decreases. On the other hand, the presence of chlorides promotes a more oxidised passive layer. The XPS results also showed relevant differences on the composition of the oxide layers for the films formed under cyclic voltammetry and/or under OCP.

Optical interferometry for the absolute calibration of standard accelerometers is based on displacement amplitude measurements considering a uniaxial sinusoidal excitation movement at a given frequency. In reality, the movement generated by a shaker also contains components perpendicular to the oscillation axis, introducing a rocking motion effect. In the primary calibration of vibrations by laser interferometry, the rocking motion is a critical issue to be considered for high accuracy measurements. The knowledge of the impact of this effect in the performances of acceleration amplitude measurement is fundamental for the definition of a robust calibration approach. Generally, this effect increases with the excitation frequency and, beyond a certain threshold, its influence in the final result may become quite relevant. In this work, we study the influence of the rocking motion in the calibration of one accelerometer with two shaker models. The study comprises a nominal acceleration of 100 m.s -2 for frequencies between 1 kHz and 9 kHz, considering a sinusoidal excitement. An interferometric system based on heterodyne detection was used for the high frequency regime. Measurements were performed for 12 incidence points equally spaced along the border of the surface of a dummy mass attached to the standard accelerometer, and the corresponding average was estimated, allowing the characterisation of the rocking motion effect and the estimation of the corresponding component in the expanded uncertainty budget.

In this work is presented a relative based interferometry technique with homodyne and heterodyne detection for accelerometers absolute calibration in the range between 10 Hz and 10 kHz with accelerations of 0.5 to 400 ms -2 . The experimental systems implemented and the acquisition and the developed data processing modules are described. The results obtained as the uncertainty budget for all the measuring range is evaluated, describing the mathematical models and identifying the corresponding uncertainty sources.

Dissertação de licenciatura apresentada à Faculdade de Ciências do Desporto e Educaçãp Física Este estudo tem como objectivo conhecer e comparar o grau de satisfação/insatisfação de professores estagiários de Educação Física e de professores estagiários de outras áreas disciplinares, ambos da Universidade de Coimbra, no ano lectivo 2005/2006. Para a realização deste estudo utilizámos uma amostra constituída por 97 inquiridos, em que 55 são alunos do 4.º ano da Faculdade de Ciências do Desporto e Educação Física da Universidade de Coimbra, leccionando nos distritos de Coimbra e Aveiro, e os restantes 42 são alunos de várias Faculdades que neste ano lectivo leccionam em Coimbra. A idade dos inquiridos está compreendida entre os 20 e os 40 anos, apresentando uma média de 23,07 anos e um desvio padrão de 2,546 anos. O instrumento de avaliação utilizado para a realização deste estudo foi o Questionário de Opinião a Professores de Educação Física (QOPEF) de Ramos (2003), adaptado de Correia (1997), que também neste estudo foi adaptado para professores de outras áreas disciplinares. O tratamento de dados foi realizado com o programa informático SPSS versão 11.5. Para a análise dos dados utilizámos técnicas de estatística descritiva e técnicas de estatísticas inferencial. Através deste estudo podemos tirar algumas conclusões, das quais destacamos as mais significativas. Os sintomas de stress mais experimentados pelos professores estagiários associados à profissão docente são, sobretudo, a “fadiga” (85=87,6%), a “frustração” (63=64,9%) e o “medo de enfrentar situações difíceis” (62=63,9%). A manifestação de stress mais verificável é a “insatisfação profissional” (41=42,3%). As condições patológicas do foro somático associadas ao exercício da profissão não são muito evidentes, no entanto, a que se apresenta com maior frequência é os “resfriados e sintomas gripais” (47=48,5%). A patologia do foro psíquico associado ao exercício da profissão é, essencialmente, a “ansiedade” (72=74,2%). Os factores que contribuem para um maior bem-estar e satisfação profissional dos professores estagiários são: o “factor de natureza relacional professor-alunos”, o “factor de natureza profissional”, as “manifestações de bem-estar/mal-estar docente” e o “factor de natureza institucional (professor/instituições)”; o factor que representa insatisfação profissional e mal-estar docente para os professores estagiários é o “factor de natureza económica”, enquanto o factor que contribui para uma situação dúbia de mal-estar/bem-estar profissional, representando indiferença e neutralidade para os estagiários, neste ano lectivo, é o “factor de natureza institucional (instituições/instituições)”. Por fim, concluímos que existem diferenças estatisticamente significativas entre os dois grupos em estudo verificando-se tais diferenças a nível das “alterações urinárias”, “dores de cabeça ao acordar”, “medo de enfrentar situações difíceis”, “cefaleias”, “ansiedade”, “o facto de teres que avaliar os alunos”, “valorização da profissão docente pela sociedade” e “situação geográfica da escola”.

The c-erb2 proto-oncogene is a member of the epidermal growth factor receptor family and has been associated with a more aggressive breast tumour biology and resistance to some types of treatments.To evaluate the prognostic value of c-erb-2 receptor, from primary breast cancer on tamoxifen therapy.We examined 66 paraffin-embedded sections from primary breast cancers. Patients were treated with surgery plus adjuvant treatment with tamoxifen; 58% had also received chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy. Membrane staining for c-erb-2 was evaluated by immunohistochemistry and overall survival and relapse-free survival were compared between positives and negatives for c-erb-2.43,9% of tumours over expressed c-erb-2 receptor, but this was not associated with a worse prognosis on overall survival either on relapse free-survival, with a p value of 0,15 and 0,2 respectively.There is not any advantage to determine c-erb-2 as a prognostic factor on overall survival either on relapse free-survival. Attending the homogenous characteristics between both groups with any statistical differences according age.

Resistance standards with values in the TΩ range play an important role in electrical instrumentation. The calibration of such standards is, thus, a service offered by many metrology institutes. The techniques used to measure very high resistance values differ quite substantially from the calibration techniques applied in the lower resistance ranges. For this reason, the EURAMET technical committee for electricity and magnetism decided in 2008 to organise for the first time a supplementary comparison of resistance at 1 TΩ and 100 TΩ based on well characterized travelling standards. Eighteen European National Metrology Institutes participated in the comparison. With some exceptions, the results supplied by the participants agree reasonably well with the comparison reference value within the expanded uncertainty. As observed in other resistance comparisons, the characteristics of the standards used as transport artefacts ultimately limit the accuracy of comparisons in this field. The transport behaviour is difficult to model and introduces an undesired bias in the laboratory results. The transport uncertainties are at the level of the uncertainties claimed by some of the participants and, thus, limit the meaningfulness of the comparison results. Another remarkable observation is the big difference in the uncertainty statements made by the participants, even in cases where similar measurement systems were used. Rasuma Les definitions d' ‘adventicee’ et de ‘mauvaise herbee’ en Francais, de ‘weede’ en Anglais et de ‘Unkraute’ en Allemand ont ete relevees dans la bibliographie. La difficulte de trouver une seule definition satisfaisante pour ‘weede’ et ‘Unkraute’ est insurmontable puisque ces mots ont deux sens et doivent par consequent avoir deux definitions distinctes: (i) adventice, weed, Unkraut (sens ecologique): plante qui croit spontanement dans les milieux modifies par l'homme; (ii) mauvaise herbe ou malherbe, weed, Unkraut (sens malherbologique): plante indesirable. PURPOSE: The aim of the present work was to evaluate the usefulness of CA-125 normalized in time area under the curve (CA-125 AUC) to signalise epithelial ovarian cancer relapse. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Data from a hundred and eleven patients were submitted to two different approaches based on CA-125 AUC increase values to predict patient relapse. In Criterion A total CA-125 AUC normalized in time value (AUC(i)) was compared with the immediately previous one (AUC(i-1)) using the formulae AUC(i) > or = F * AUC(i-1) (several F values were tested) to find the appropriate close related increment associated to patient relapse. In Criterion B total CA-125 AUC normalised in time was calculated and several cut-off values were correlated with patient relapse prediction capacity. RESULTS: In Criterion A the best accuracy was achieved with a factor (F) of 1.25 (increment of 25% from the previous status), while in Criterion B the best accuracies were achieved with cut-offs of 25, 50, 75 and 100 IU/mL. The mean lead time to relapse achieved with Criterion A was 181 days, while with Criterion B they were, respectively, 131, 111, 63 and 11 days. CONCLUSION: Based on our results we believe that conjugation and sequential application of both criteria in patient relapse detection should be highly advisable. CA-125 AUC rapid burst in asymptomatic patients should be firstly evaluated using Criterion A with a high accuracy (0.85) and with a substantial mean lead time to relapse (181 days). If a negative answer was obtained then Criterion B should performed to confirm the absence of relapse.

Coherent interferometric optical interferometry is one of the most interesting techniques for the primary calibration of standard accelerometers. By measuring the displacement caused by a sinusoidal excitation applied to the accelerometer, it is possible to determine the value of the acceleration. An experimental system was developed and implemented, based in relative interferometry with heterodyne interferometry, for the calibration of standard accelerometers in high frequency regime, up to 10 kHz. Heterodyne detection is needed to overcome a limitation of homodyne based systems in terms of measuring range, both in acceleration and frequency. In terms of performances, the system was capable of calibrations for frequencies from 100 Hz to 10 kHz and accelerations from 0.5 ms -2 to 400 ms -2 . In this paper, we present a detailed description of the selected method, the implemented experimental systems and data processing algorithms, and the test results obtained in the calibration of a standard accelerometer, evaluating systems performances in terms of working range.
