Co-written by bachelor students and their lecturer, this commentary is a critical reflection on the Materiality and Urban Politics (SOC387) course taught at Boğaziçi University in Istanbul in the summer of 2022. The course unfolded during a time of political unrest at Boğaziçi following the appointment of a new president, which brought the campus under a state of police siege. In this context, SOC387 explored relations between the material and the urban/political through democratic and inclusive pedagogical approaches. Bringing together reflections on the sociopolitical context in which the course took place, classroom pedagogies, and students’ commentaries, we reflect on how the course helped participants redefine their sense of belonging to, and engagement with, Istanbul’s urban/political environment during a time of perceived disempowerment and “crisis of democracy” in Turkey. By exploring the productive tensions between urban space, politics, and democratic pedagogy, this commentary argues that teaching and learning in and about the city can be cathartic in reinforcing participants’ will to act on and contribute to urban politics.

The underground layers of cities are constantly concreted with urban transformation projects. The studies on built environment mainly focus on the morphological changes, related dispossessions and observable aspects of urban landscape. However, the environmental costs of transformations are not limited to the impacts of above-ground interventions. In Istanbul, the major impact of subterranean interventions is the destruction of water and soil ecosystems as well as its multi-layered heritage as the large-scale urban transformation decisions are primarily applied to historic neighbourhoods where the existing building stock was appropriated by the urban precariat. The urban transformation projects in historic neighbourhoods of Istanbul come into question with socio-economic dispossessions rather than environmental justice. In this manuscript, the main aim is to address the socio-ecological impacts of planning and architectural design decisions disregarding subterranean construction density, through the case of Tarlabaşı in Istanbul. Tarlabaşı represents one of the most emblematic case in Istanbul’s urban resistance history and evokes eco-dystopias, which may be attributed to the decisions that justify stigmatisation. With the context, conceptual frame and scope set by these problem definitions, while considering urban inequality a pre-condition of environmental justice, this manuscript examines the correlation between environmental policies, social stigmatisation and flexed environmental values in planning and architecture culture via local political ecology. The methodology employed in the study is based on qualitative analysis of the stages and legal decisions involved. Mes’adet Bedirhan was an eloquent author who wrote for the pioneer Ottoman feminist journal called Kadınlar Dünyası (Women’s World) published in Istanbul between 1913 and 1921. She wrote multiple pieces in the Ottoman Turkish and French editions of the journal in 1913–1914. Although very few traces of her life story exist in the historical accounts of the era, she left a mark in this world through her own act of writing. This article not only generates new information about her life but also endeavors to reflect on the overall content of her essays. Through these essays, she showed Ottoman women that they can change their destiny once they discovered their innate strength. She not only underlined women’s agency in contesting their unequal position in the society but also criticized her feminist sisters in the west for representing the Ottoman women as silent and submissive objects of pleasure. This research delves into the evolution of Istanbul's urban agenda, which has become increasingly intricate due to recent challenges. The city's planning paradigm has undergone a discernible shift, with heightened attention concerns like seismic resilience, sustainability, and the climate-change. The planning projections for the city have experienced significant changes, by the earthquakes 1999 and 2023, climate-change, and the pandemic in 2020. Although the pandemic is considered temporary, it has significant in bringing sustainable matters like living airier, greener areas, back to the city planning. In response to the latest challenges, particularly the earthquake, the city confronted an ecological dilemma, prompting proposal to relocate new housing areas to the Northern-forest. The city's northern development axis, planned a century ago by the French architect-urbanist Henri Prost, is being questioned today end to its limits for green-areas. Based on ongoing global discussion, on academical circles on the imperative, the historic city of Istanbul grapples with the contemporary problems sustainability and seismic considerations in its future planning endeavors. This study engages in discursive analyses while concurrently offering practical recommendations to address sustainability through the development of specific zoning arrangements focuses on dual research axis urban-based, and housing-based, laws, and regulations, also housing model, and typologies as missing part of the previous research. This study principally examines this problematic via zoning practices of Istanbul in the Henri Prost period from housing areas to the housing models and typologies. Also, globally, along with the new zoning, the old zoning laws, and regulations can be bring the agenda again in the context of sustainability to promote a balanced relationship between human, nature and sustainability goals. In conclusion, amid the recent challenges in the city, innovative suggestions for advanced zoning applications in pursuit of sustainability reveal a notable gap in the protection of green-areas, planning new settlements. Henri Prost's master plans stand out for employing distinctive zoning techniques for each district, also offering specific housing models and typologies. Extending this methodology to green-areas presents a bridge the existing void. By presented potential case scenarios at the end of the study emphasizing the merits of integrating historical zoning practices into contemporary planning, it aims to stimulate discussions on holistic and forward-looking urban development strategies. According to WHO, between 2000 and 2021, there were approximately 247 million malaria cases and 627,000 deaths globally, with the majority of cases occurring in sub-Saharan Africa. In Turkey, indigenous P. vivax malaria was a major public health problem until its eradication was achieved in 2010. Although indigenous malaria transmission has been significantly reduced since 2010, the country is challenged with imported malaria due to increasing global travel and migration from endemic regions. In this study, all imported malaria cases admitted to Dr. Sadi Konuk Research and Training Hospital, Istanbul, between 2018 and 2023 were included. DNA extraction was performed using archived slides and EDTA blood samples. Real-time PCR was performed to identify samples at the species level using previously reported primers and probes. In addition, all available patient demographics are presented. During the six years between 2018 and 2023, 157 patients were diagnosed with imported malaria. According to the real-time PCR results, 149 cases were P. falciparum (94.9%), five cases were P. vivax (3.2%), two cases were P. ovale (1.3%), and one case was P. malariae (0.6%). The male/female ratio among diagnosed patients was 2.34 (110♂/47♀) among diagnosed patients. Plasmodium falciparum was detected in patients from all African regions, whereas P. vivax was detected only in patients from Liberia and Djibouti. Although malaria cases in Turkey have significantly decreased due to elimination efforts and effective public health interventions, the recent increase in both imported and indigenous cases, as well as the presence of suitable vector species in the country, indicates that malaria still remains a serious public health problem for Turkey. In this study, a hybrid artificial neural network (ANN)-Rao series (Rao_1, Rao_2, and Rao_3) algorithm model was developed to analyze water consumption in Istanbul province, Turkey. A multiple linear regression (MLR) model was developed and an ANN was also trained with back-propagation (BP) artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithms for comparison. Gross domestic product and population data were treated as independent variables. To test the accuracy of the presently developed hybrid model, its outputs were compared with those of ANN-BP, ANN-ABC, and MLR models. Error values calculated for the test set indicated that the ANN-Rao_3 algorithm outperformed the MLR, ANN-BP, and ANN-ABC reference models as well as ANN-Rao_1 and ANN-Rao_2 algorithms. Therefore, using the ANN-Rao_3 model, water consumption forecasts for Istanbul province were generated out to 2035 for low-, expected-, and high-water demand conditions. The model-generated forecasts indicate that the water requirements of Istanbul in 2035 will be between 1182.95 and 1399.54 million m3, with the upper-range estimates outpacing supplies. According to low and expected scenarios, there will be no problem in providing the water needs of Istanbul until 2035. However, according to high scenario, water needs of Istanbul will not be provided as of 2033.Therefore, water conservation policies should be enacted to ensure provision of the water needs of Istanbul province from 2033 onward. Istanbul's geographical position and geopolitical prominence attracted various cultures throughout history, and this cosmopolitan structure remained during the Ottoman period. With the reformative movements that emerged in the late 19th century as well as the end of the Crimean War, the city witnessed an influx of foreigners. As a result of modernization activities, the city started to expand; the requirement for contemporary structures increased, which in turn necessitated the construction of advanced infrastructure projects. Due to the scarcity of local architects with the necessary competence, the Ottoman government referred to European architects and engineers for their assistance. Since the influence of foreign architects is a very comprehensive subject, this study has been narrowed to the contributions of architects and engineers from German-speaking countries. Since Turkish-German relations have a significant position in Turkey's history, and notably the initial interactions took place in Istanbul, this research exclusively examines the activities in Istanbul and the period of the 19th and 20th centuries when they were intensive. The economic, political, and cultural factors and the vast cultural exchange between the two countries during the late Ottoman period, the inter-war period with the activities of German and Austrian architects who sought refuge in Turkey from Nazi Germany in universities and urban planning, and finally, the causes of the decreasing interaction after WWII, were investigated. This study focuses on the work of Germanophone architects reflecting their own national cultures, lasting nearly 200 years in the fields of design and education in Istanbul. While there are several publications on the subject, there are few that provide a comprehensive overview of the subject in one place. As a result, a comprehensive list of all architects who worked in Istanbul and their works was produced, and they were marked on a map. For this goal and target, literature, historical processes, and maps were reviewed. The information has been summarized in a chronological table format, and reference has been made to some lesser-known names, which consequently have not been thoroughly researched yet. This study aims to investigate the impact of spatio-temporal dynamics of urban sprawl on habitats in Istanbul, using the CORINE 1990 and 2018 land cover datasets. In this context, by means of geographic information system (GIS) tools and techniques, land cover maps are created for land cover change analysis and visualization, the Shannon's entropy method is performed for measuring urban growth and sprawl, and the landscape metrics method is applied for assessing habitat loss and fragmentation. Results indicate that the rate of urban sprawl in the area increased by 0.1230 as per the Shannon's entropy index over the 28-year period. Similarly, the Shannon Diversity Index and the Shannon Evenness Index rose from 1.74 to 1.85 and from 0.68 to 0.70, respectively, indicating an increase in urbanization within the area. Moreover, an analysis of patch numbers reveals that habitat fragmentation increased in shrub and/or herbaceous vegetation associations (72.55%), heterogeneous agricultural areas (45.11%), arable lands (42.5%), forests (36.13%) and pastures (15.05%), due to urbanization. Habitat fragmentation has had a detrimental effect on the local biodiversity. While 15 flora species were identified as vulnerable, 13 as endangered and 9 as critically endangered, 19 fauna species were identified as vulnerable and 5 as endangered. This study highlights that the natural habitats and biodiversity of Istanbul will suffer further decline due to urbanization unless sustainable urban planning and management policies are put into practice. Studies have shown that the greenspace ratio has a cooling effect on the land surface temperature (LST) in different regions. Sample plots were obtained from 32 different regions in Istanbul. For 1985, 2000, 2013, and 2021, LSTs were determined using Landsat satellite images, and their relationships with GI, NDVI, and NDBI were examined. In the 1985–2021 period, the rate of greenspace in the sample plots decreased from 23 to 6.9%. The lowest LSTs were obtained in 1985, whereas the highest LSTs were found in 2013. Generally, low LSTs values were obtained in areas with a high greenspace ratio. The GI index decreased from 0.23 to 0.07 from 1985–2021. There was an increase of 10.07°C in average LST values in the 1985–2021 period. Negative correlations were found between NDVI and GI indices and LST, and positive correlations were found between NDBI and LST. In 1985, the lowest LST value was obtained in the 31st region with a greenspace ratio of 54%, while in other periods it was 27th region, some of which was covered with forests and the percentage of greenspace ratio decreased from 21 to 11%. The areas with the highest LST values were generally obtained in areas with dense population and urbanization and with a greenspace rate of 1% or less. The relationship between urban heat island (UHI) and land use/land cover (LULC), and local climate zone (LCZ) is apparent and takes rising attention in the current literature. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between meteorological data collected from 30 stations between 2016 and 2022 and Istanbul's LULCs and LCZs. Several notable findings were uncovered, providing light on the UHI phenomenon and its consequences for the city's characteristics. The stations in urban areas (typology A) had higher temperatures than stations in rural/suburban (typology B) and forested landscape (typology C). Those yearly values were ∼1°C for monthly mean temperatures and ∼1.5°C for monthly minimum temperatures. Moreover, urban areas possessed +4 and +2 hot days (35°C and above) for typologies B and C, respectively. Another remarkable result was that stations situated close to water surfaces exhibited a lower tendency to exceed temperatures of 35°C. Furthermore, built-type LCZs wind velocity achieved a lower value than land cover type, and humidity in typology A was 5% and 10% less than the typologies B and C, respectively. Consequently, the southern part of Istanbul emerged as the most vulnerable location to the UHI phenomena, suffering greater temperatures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: In recent years, there has been an increasing trend in the number of imported Plasmodium falciparum cases in Turkey. To improve treatment success and to better understand malaria epidemiology among imported cases, it is necessary to determine anti-malarial drug resistance. This study aimed to survey polymorphisms of resistance genes in imported P. falciparum patients using archived thin smear preparations and EDTA blood samples. Methods: A total of 100 imported P. falciparum patients admitted to Bakırköy Dr. Sadi Konuk Research and Training Hospital between 2017 and 2022 were included in this study. DNA extraction was performed using an archived slide and EDTA blood samples that were microscopically diagnosed. After confirming the samples by real-time PCR, the pfmdr1, pfcrt, and pfk13 genes were amplified and sequenced. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were screened using Geneious R9 software, with the reference P. falciparum clone 3D7 isolate. Results: All studied samples were confirmed to be P. falciparum using real-time PCR. Nested PCR was conducted and the pfcrt (92 samples), pfmdr1 (91 samples), and pfk13 (93 samples) genes were successfully amplified. Sequence analysis revealed the highest mutation rate in the pfmdr1 (74.5%) gene, with the identification of five haplotypes: NYSND (wild-type, 23%), NFSND (56%), NYSDD (2.2%), NFSDD (15.4%), and YFSND (3.4%)]. The pfcrt mutation was identified in 11 samples (12.2%), whereas the pfk13 mutation was found in only two samples. Conclusion: This study is the first molecular survey of anti-malarial drug resistance genes in Turkey. With the increasing number of imported Plasmodium malaria cases and recent reports of sporadic indigenous P. falciparum cases, malaria is becoming a growing concern in Turkey. Although molecular screening for resistance markers in P. falciparum malaria is not routinely conducted, the data from this study will enhance treatment success rates and contribute to global malaria elimination. AbstractThis paper explores the discursive and spatial construction of feminine norms during the ‘Festival of Spring and Flowers,’ a momentous urban event held at Gülhane Park, İstanbul, from 1950 to 1960. Gülhane was a bustling and highly frequented location during the Festival, serving as a significant site of convergence, interaction, and contestation. Consequently, Gülhane provides a crystallized and concise cross-section of the ubiquitous femininities in 1950s Istanbul. Drawing upon textual and visual archival evidence, the author(s) argue that the Festival played a pivotal role in perpetuating gendered norms by consistently portraying ‘liberated, domesticated, and pariah’ femininities. Concomitant with the trifold construction of femininity, the space itself took on a ‘gendered persona’; Gülhane was depicted as a safe and sterile location when frequented by the ‘liberated and domesticated’ women, but was perceived as an ‘immoral’ space when ‘invaded’ by the ‘pariah’ women. The gendered history of 1950s İstanbul have been largely overlooked in the current scholarship, despite the emergence of new gendered norms alongside the transforming political landscape in Turkey during that time. This article will address this literature gap by conducting an in-depth historical analysis of the gender norms within the Festival. Istanbul is located south of the Black Sea and north of the Marmara Sea. The seismic stresses and strains in Istanbul and the Marmara Sea are governed by the E-W and NE-SW tectonic characteristics. This research aims to establish the latest crustal motion parameters in Istanbul, utilising Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) surveys. A geodetic network was established for this study, comprising 1,159 temporary and nine permanent GNSS stations across Istanbul's Asian and European sectors. Between 2000 and 2020, GNSS measurements were taken, and horizontal and vertical crustal movements and velocity vector maps were produced using GNSS and Geographical Information System (GIS) tools. The GNSS data was processed using GIPSY-OASIS, Topcon Magnet Tools, and Leica Geo-Office software. The data was, then, analysed using ESRI ArcGIS software, which generated thematic maps of Istanbul using ordinary Kriging and trend surface analysis interpolation methods. The analysis results indicate a horizontal variation of the local velocity rate in the SW direction between 14.3 and 17.1 mm per year. Moreover, the data suggests that there is a subsidence variation between -0.7 and -2.0 mm per year. The study results show that the northern block of the North Anatolian Fault Zone moves horizontally towards the SW at an average rate of 16.3 mm per year. The study findings demonstrate a notable horizontal slip rate in the northern regions, whereas vertical subsidence is significantly observable in the eastern regions. The study involved the creation of Voronoi cells for each temporary GNSS station, followed by the calculation of regional shift magnitudes in the area surrounding each station. In regions with notable horizontal and vertical slippage, it would be beneficial to increase the number of observation stations, particularly within the extensive Voronoi cells. The longterm and continuous GNSS measurements greatly improve the study of ongoing crustal movement and tectonic deformation processes in north-western Anatolia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In metropolitan areas, rising house prices make it more difficult for low- and middle-income people to access affordable housing. However, the availability of affordable rental housing in metropolitan areas serves the survival and social sustainability of all social groups in urban areas. Despite the critical importance of rental housing affordability at the metropolitan level, studies on this issue, especially spatial studies, are limited. This article spatially analyzes housing affordability for low- and middle-income households in Istanbul, a city experiencing a neoliberal housing policy. The methodology of the study is based on an analysis of rental housing affordability in the metropolitan area of Istanbul by taking into account the polycentric structure of Istanbul, the central grading (center, subcenters, and periphery), and regular and irregular housing subregions. The findings of the article demonstrate that low- and middle-income households in Istanbul have no access to affordable rental housing in the city center and limited access to the subcenters. Furthermore, low- and middle-income households have access mainly to irregular housing areas within the city. The findings imply that without social policies, they will be excluded from central or regular housing areas. This points to the critical role of social policies in neoliberal housing markets. This paper introduces a methodology for characterizing the breadth of natural hazard types, hazard interrelationships, and risk scenarios in Global South urban areas, focusing on Nairobi, Kenya, and Istanbul, Türkiye. Our approach involves (a) a comprehensive characterization of multi‐hazards and their interrelationships in an urban setting, (b) collaborative development of relevant multi‐hazard scenarios with local disaster risk reduction (DRR) stakeholders, and (c) analysis of the potential for integrating these scenarios into urban DRR efforts. Using a critical review of 135 sources (academic and gray literature, databases, online, and social media), we identify 19 natural hazard types that might influence Nairobi and 23 in Istanbul. We further identified in Nairobi 88 and Istanbul 105 hazard interrelationship pairs (e.g., an earthquake triggering landslides) out of a possible 576 interrelationships. These findings are cataloged in an extensive database, which informs the creation of multi‐hazard risk scenario exemplars for each city. These exemplars are refined through stakeholder engagement, involving four workshops (47 participants) and nine semi‐structured interviews with local DRR stakeholders. Despite the identified benefits, this engagement reveals a significant gap in integrating multi‐hazards into current urban policy and practice. Governance challenges are highlighted as a key barrier, but opportunities for better integration are also identified, including evolving policies and growing awareness among urban actors. Our approach, particularly relevant in data‐scarce urban areas of low‐ and middle‐income countries, provides a framework for exploring multi‐hazard issues in various urban contexts. Plain Language Summary: Our study sought to understand the breadth of natural hazards an urban area in the Global South might face, how the hazards are interrelated (e.g., an earthquake can trigger landslides), and typical risk scenarios that matter to local experts. We applied our methodology to Nairobi and Istanbul to assess how considering multiple hazards could enhance disaster risk reduction (DRR) efforts. We systematically reviewed 135 information sources, including gray and peer‐reviewed literature and online and social media. We found 19 natural hazard types could influence Nairobi, while Istanbul faces 23. These hazards showed numerous interactions, with 88 in Nairobi and 105 in Istanbul. Subsequently, we held workshops and interviews with local DRR stakeholders in both cities to co‐designed multi‐hazard risk scenarios. Practitioner stakeholders in Nairobi and Istanbul emphasized that considering these interrelationships helped create comprehensive risk scenarios and improved planning for addressing multiple hazards concurrently, a crucial aspect of urban safety and preparedness. They noted that current city policies and practices often overlooked this approach, primarily due to risk management and governance issues; for example, siloed approaches to DRR resulting in disjointed implementation and planning, and a lack of coordination and communication among actors. Our research framework may assist other urban areas, particularly those in developing countries with limited data, in comprehending and preparing for the complex challenges posed by various natural hazards. Foodborne pathogens' transmission is essential in the spread of antibiotic resistance, and extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Escherichia coli especially threatens public health. E. coli plays an essential role in the resistance to commonly used beta-lactam group antibiotics. Ready-to-eat (RTE) stuffed mussels are among many restaurants and street vendors, presenting potential health risks of food hygiene origin. 200 RTE stuffed mussels were collected from the Asian and European sides of Istanbul and analysed for the presence of E. coli. As a result of PCR analysis, E. coli was detected in 7 (3.5%) samples. An antibiotic susceptibility test was performed using the disc diffusion method to determine ESBL and carbapenem resistance. All isolates were resistant to ampicillin. The double-disk synergy test was performed as an ESBL phenotypic confirmation test, and no phenotypically ESBL-producing E. coli were detected. The bla TEM gene was detected in one isolate (14.2%) by mPCR, but bla CTX-M, bla SHV, and bla OXA genes were not observed. Meropenem and imipenem were used with the disk diffusion method for carbapenem resistance study, and no resistant isolate was found. Carbapenem resistance genes were investigated by monoplex PCR, and bla NDM-1, bla OXA-48, bla VIM, and bla IMP resistance genes were not detected. This is the first report on ESBL-producing E. coli in RTE stuffed mussels in Türkiye, which draws attention to a public health risk. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Age and body size in a lowland population of Lissotriton schmidtleri in the İstanbul Province of Türkiye were examined by applying the skeletochronology method. The age range varies between 5 to 11 years in males and 4 to 8 years in females. The mean age and SVL values were 8.1 years and 36.28 mm in males and 6.4 years and 37.72 mm in females. The mean SVL and age values showed a significant difference between the sexes. The present study showed sexual dimorphism and different life expectancy between sexes. In response to the latest challenges, particularly the earthquake, the city confronted an ecological dilemma, prompting proposal to relocate new housing areas to the Northern-forest. The city's northern development axis, planned a century ago by the French architect-urbanist Henri Prost, is being questioned today end to its limits for green-areas. Based on ongoing global discussion, on academical circles on the imperative, the historic city of Istanbul grapples with the contemporary problems sustainability and seismic considerations in its future planning endeavors. This study engages in discursive analyses while concurrently offering practical recommendations to address sustainability through the development of specific zoning arrangements focuses on dual research axis urban-based, and housing-based, laws, and regulations, also housing model, and typologies as missing part of the previous research. This study principally examines this problematic via zoning practices of Istanbul in the Henri Prost period from housing areas to the housing models and typologies. Also, globally, along with the new zoning, the old zoning laws, and regulations can be bring the agenda again in the context of sustainability to promote a balanced relationship between human, nature and sustainability goals. In conclusion, amid the recent challenges in the city, innovative suggestions for advanced zoning applications in pursuit of sustainability reveal a notable gap in the protection of green-areas, planning new settlements. Henri Prost’s master plans stand out for employing distinctive zoning techniques for each district, also offering specific housing models and typologies. Extending this methodology to green-areas presents a bridge the existing void. By presented potential case scenarios at the end of the study emphasizing the merits of integrating historical zoning practices into contemporary planning, it aims to stimulate discussions on holistic and forward-looking urban development strategies.

The chapter seeks to provide a road map of the historical journey of the science of Adab al-bahsa ła al-munazara (the science/art of investigation and debate). It has not attempted to identify all the various paths and crossroads of this journey, as it would have stretched the limits of this study too much. The focus was mainly on the Hanafi tradition. Even within this tradition, however, we did not have the opportunity to present all the directions and orientation points on the “Adab map”. We try to show, nevertheless, that if the route/road we have sketched is followed, then enough knowledge about the fundamental components of the science of debate/argumentation could be obtained. We hope, at the same time, that our study can serve as a guide to more exhaustive research on this subject. Undoubtedly, the road from Kufa to Samarkand described in the first, the largest part of the chapter is quite complex and challenging. Everything on the road seems to be still in the process of formation where not all patterns and principles have been fully revealed yet. The road from Kufa to Istanbul presented briefly at the end of the chapter contains probably less unexpected and challenging twists and turns than the previous one, but it is still far from being a simple, straight, and direct line connecting the starting point and the destination. As soon as we enter the Anatolian territory, via Tabriz, we encounter new texts and discourses of the science of debate. Moreover, the commentaries, glosses and taliqs (supercommentaries) produced on this land, have become, so to speak, the main record book and the general manual of the science of debate in every aspect.

Considering that Hijaz was located in the territory of the Ottoman government, Iranian pilgrims used to go there to visit the sacred thresholds and Jerusalem and perform Hajj rituals. In the territory of Ottoman Empire (678 -1341A. H.), especially in Istanbul and Egypt, they witnessed some innovations surprising and wonderful for them, so that they reflected their observations in their writings. These pilgrims tried to share their findings with their countrymen through the travelogues.The question of this research is to what extent the encounter of Iranian pilgrims with the elements of Western civilization led to new questions in their minds in terms of epistemology. This research done through the descriptive-analytical method and mainly based on the information available in the travelogues and some other research works, has come to the conclusion that the encounter of Iranian pilgrims with the new manifestations of Western civilization was surprise toward cultural, artistic, social and industrial domains that led some of them to transfer this technology to Iran.

Abstract Background In recent years, there has been an increasing trend in the number of imported Plasmodium falciparum cases in Turkey. To improve treatment success and to better understand malaria epidemiology among imported cases, it is necessary to determine anti-malarial drug resistance. This study aimed to survey polymorphisms of resistance genes in imported P. falciparum patients using archived thin smear preparations and EDTA blood samples. Methods A total of 100 imported P. falciparum patients admitted to Bakırköy Dr. Sadi Konuk Research and Training Hospital between 2017 and 2022 were included in this study. DNA extraction was performed using an archived slide and EDTA blood samples that were microscopically diagnosed. After confirming the samples by real-time PCR, the pfmdr1, pfcrt, and pfk13 genes were amplified and sequenced. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were screened using Geneious R9 software, with the reference P. falciparum clone 3D7 isolate. Results All studied samples were confirmed to be P. falciparum using real-time PCR. Nested PCR was conducted and the pfcrt (92 samples), pfmdr1 (91 samples), and pfk13 (93 samples) genes were successfully amplified. Sequence analysis revealed the highest mutation rate in the pfmdr1 (74.5%) gene, with the identification of five haplotypes: NYSND (wild-type, 23%), NFSND (56%), NYSDD (2.2%), NFSDD (15.4%), and YFSND (3.4%)]. The pfcrt mutation was identified in 11 samples (12.2%), whereas the pfk13 mutation was found in only two samples. Conclusion This study is the first molecular survey of anti-malarial drug resistance genes in Turkey. With the increasing number of imported Plasmodium malaria cases and recent reports of sporadic indigenous P. falciparum cases, malaria is becoming a growing concern in Turkey. Although molecular screening for resistance markers in P. falciparum malaria is not routinely conducted, the data from this study will enhance treatment success rates and contribute to global malaria elimination.

The rapid and ongoing trend of metropolises transitioning into global cities and world cities is influenced by the increasing political, economic, cultural, and scientific dimensions of the urban political geography. Cities, as dynamic entities, evolve from new cities to mother cities, metropolises, global cities, and ultimately world cities. In this competitive environment, metropolises strive to enhance their level of competitiveness vis - à -vis their counterparts. In this study, the researcher compares the performance of Tehran and Istanbul, two metropolises in the Islamic world, based on the criteria and functions of world cities. The researcher employs an index developed by political geography scholars who specialize in studying world cities. The objective is to determine the ranking of these cities among world cities. To accomplish this, relevant maps have been prepared using ArcMap software, and numerical indicators and criteria have been analyzed in a descriptive -analytical manner. The analysis reveals that Istanbul outperforms Tehran in most indicators and occupies a strong position in the network society and flow space of global cities. This can be attributed to factors such as geopolitical location, an open economic environment, and other indicators. The results of this comparative study can guide city administrators in designing a more suitable future landscape for these cities, ultimately leading to achieving global city status. This paper aims to critically examine the travel notes of François Ferdinand Philippe (1818-1900) who is known as the Prince of Joinville, and the son of the French King Louis Philippe (1830-1848), during his visits to Levant cities in 1836 and 1839. The main purpose of this trip of the Prince of Joinville, who grew up as an experienced naval officer, is to support Mehmet Ali Pasha. The Prince, witnessed the significant events of Mehmet Ali Pasha’s revolt on his travels. The prince, when he was in İstanbul and Egypt, had the opportunity to directly meet with high-ranking state officials, military figures, and diplomats such as Mahmud II, Sultan Abdulmejid II, Admiral in Chief Fevzi Pasha, British Ambassador Lord Ponsoby, Russian Ambassador Boutinief, and German Marshal Moltke acquiring information about the diplomacy of the period. He is one of the first witnesses that Fevzi Pasha will surrender the Ottoman Navy to Mehmet Ali Pasha. During this revolt, a significant number of people from Anatolia, from both Alevi Bektashi and Sunni groups, sects and communities, joined the side of Mehmet Ali Pasha. The Prince of Joinville, also, had the opportunity to visit Levant cities like İzmir, İstanbul, Alexandria, and to observe these cities socio-cultural. Prince of Joinville even attracted attention with his strategic intervention in the Fire of Pera in 1839 saving a significant portion of Pera from burning. Prince Joinville depicted many significant events, notably the Fire of Pera, that were the subject of his travels in his artwork making it possible to see the panorama of the era both literarily and visually. Even though the memoirs and drawings of Prince Joinville are influenced by the Orientalist perspective, much like many other travelers’ works of the time, Joinville’s travelogue which contains notes and visuals from his Levant journeys is significant for evaluating and understanding the era.

This text explores the evolving landscape of performance art in the face of pandemic restrictions, shedding light on the repercussions of audience deprivation and the subsequent exploration of digital platforms as a means of artistic expression. Focusing on some artistic performances of Alisa Oleva, the text investigates how her exploration of touching and walking as a medium influences the understanding of urban landscapes. By using the city as her studio and manipulating everyday life, Oleva uncovers the hidden stories and meanings embedded within inside and outside spaces, to examine questions related to women's histories, traces, and surfaces. In particular, we focus on Walking Home (2020), a performance that, in addition to providing an interesting example of walking as an aesthetic practice, raises political and activist questions, such as how the pandemic-induced confinement masks deeper issues, namely the safety of the domestic environment for those who identify themself as women. The fight against substance use disorders, which have been on the rise in recent years, requires a multidisciplinary approach. The factors that cause addiction, environmental factors that enable substance access, and the resulting harm from substance use are intertwined. As per the 2021 data released by the Istanbul Morgue Specialization Department of the Council of Forensic Medicine, drug or stimulant use caused 1.7% of the 5458 autopsies conducted. In our research, deaths resulting from polysubstance use are the most prevalent, with amphetamine derivatives being the most frequently detected substance. The rise in fatalities associated with amphetamine derivatives and their easy accessibility pose a significant public health concern. Based on these findings, it is crucial to focus on the environmental and economic factors that support the use of these substances to control access to amphetamine derivatives. Additionally, people with substance abuse problems are isolated due to social isolation. This situation makes it difficult for them to access addiction treatment and prevents them from receiving emergency medical intervention in the event of an overdose. In this context, it is advisable to adopt a multidisciplinary approach and to develop a comprehensive intervention strategy in cooperation with the health, education, and security sectors. This study presents a comprehensive seismic hazard assessment for Büyükçekmece, a district in Istanbul, Turkey, situated near the seismically active North Anatolian Fault (NAF). The study utilizes stochastic ground motion simulations with the validated EXSIM algorithm to understand the potential impact of medium to large-magnitude earthquakes (ranging from MW 6.3 to 7.42) on this vulnerable community. The research employs a site-specific approach, considering unique amplification factors for each location. By conducting 50 scenario-based simulations, the study assesses the seismic hazard, highlighting the importance of comprehending variations in ground motion, even when they are small, for a more precise hazard assessment. Furthermore, this study addresses the critical issue of uncertainty, particularly concerning stress parameters and hypocenter locations. The researchers demonstrate that variability in these factors can introduce substantial uncertainty in ground motion predictions. The study provides insights into the range of potential ground motion outcomes through probabilistic assessments involving multiple scenarios and stress drop values. Notably, the results indicate that ground motion levels vary with earthquake magnitudes and underscore the significance of accounting for this variability. The paper presents a study on the solidarity networks of undocumented Afghan male migrants in Istanbul. The research was conducted between August 2015 and June 2020 in the migrant districts of Beykoz, Zeytinburnu and Fatih. The study found that Afghan migrants are excluded from existing local solidarity networks and instead form their own networks as a survival strategy. The study posits that there are three primary solidarity networks knitted by locals, which are 'family', 'hometown' and 'neighbourhood'. We argue that the foundation of the solidarity networks among the locals is their shared language(s), mutual recognition, shared socio‐historical background and unofficial trust, making it difficult for newcomers to become a part of this solidarity. Afghan migrants are unable to access these networks, which aggravates their social exclusion. They use their social exclusion as a survival strategy and continue with their migration aspirations. The findings of this study indicate a significant (p < 0.001) rise in the mean air temperature (Tmean) of İstanbul over the past 51 years (1973–2023), with an annual warming trend of 0.06 °C. The strongest increasing trend in seasonal mean air temperatures has been observed in the summer season, with an increase of 0.08 °C per year. The trend analysis also shows a statistically non-significant increase in yearly average minimum temperature (Tmin) between 1973 and 2023, with a rate of 0.04 °C per year. Within the scope of the study, a total of 160 cats, 96 males and 64 females, who fell from height between August 2016 and August 2017, were retrospectively evaluated. In addition to the age, gender, breed, neutering status, clinical and radiographic findings of the cats, the answers given to the questions asked to the cat owners about the changes in the house they lived in, pre-existing diseases, and the presence of medication they were constantly using were evaluated to obtain new data on the etiology. The average age of the cats was 15.8 months. 65.6% of the cats were 12 months and younger. It was observed that 109 (68%) of the cats fell from height between April and July, and July was the month with the highest number of falls from height with 40 patients. Injury scores increased in direct proportion to the height of the fall. There was a linear correlation between falls from height and increased daytime hours. The survival rate of the cats was 93.4%. In conclusion, future studies on high-rise syndrome in cats should focus more on the effect of sex hormones, and that screening for parasitic and some bacterial agents such as Toxoplasma gondii, which is known to increase suicidal tendency in humans, may yield important results. In addition, it was seen that evaluating the ratio of unspayed female cats in countries with temperate climates where doors and windows can be left open for a long period of the year could make an important contribution to the etiology of this syndrome. Today, economic activities have begun to lose their dependence on location with the development of transportation and communication technologies. Megaregions, which are characterized by different formations in the relationship between the core city and the periphery, have emerged because of this process, which is supported by the effects of globalization and central-local policies. The TR21 region, consisting of the provinces of Tekirdağ, Kırklareli and Edirne, and the TR42 region, consisting of the provinces of Kocaeli, Sakarya, Düzce, Bolu and Yalova, centered on the city of Istanbul, define a megaregion. This study aims to examine the formation process of the mega-region based on the decentralization of Istanbul and to reveal the factors affecting the urban growth process in the region through literature research and statistical inquiries. In this context, a total of 20 spatial, social, and economic components have been identified and hierarchical clustering, Spearman correlation and linear relationship investigation methods have been used to examine the post-2000 period in Istanbul and its neighborhood. The study revealed the socio-economic and spatial components affecting the clusters and agglomerations covering historical periods. In addition, it was determined that the urban growth processes of the sub-regions were driven by different components. One of the main findings of the study is that the decentralization processes observed in the entire Istanbul megaregion are supported by existing central/local government policies and planning decisions, but there is no "core city-periphery" cooperation in terms of socio-economic development with its immediate surroundings. It was found that in the model of "relative centralization", the network of relationships formed is an association with the aim of "supporting the development -reserve- and storing the undesirable -buffer- region". In the process of development and restructuring of multi-layered cities, encounters with urban archaeological values are frequent. These encounters typically occur after construction work has begun, leading to a series of decisions and implementation processes regarding archaeological values, leading to a series of modifications. These modifications often lead to an extension of the duration and an increase in the budget required for construction works initiated by public institutions and organizations. There is a lack of flexibility in public tenders in this respect. As a result, the increase in-the duration and the cost of construction works leads to a negative perception of archaeological value within society. This article focuses on the conservation and architectural presentation process of approximately 225 m² of rectangular plan remains discovered during excavation in 2014 for the Faculty of Economics at the Beyazıt Campus of Istanbul University, located within the Historical Peninsula of Istanbul. The study details the challenges encountered during the conservation process due to the accidental discovery of the archaeological value and the lack of flexibility in public tenders, as well as the interaction with the new structure, the architectural presentation process, and the condition of the archaeological value after construction. Disaster management includes efforts to reduce the negative effects of a disaster. This management system has various challenges. Teams need to be sent to disaster areas as soon as possible to reduce losses and damages. Turkey, which frequently experiences earthquake disasters, has recently experienced the 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquakes. After the recent earthquakes, the Great Marmara Earthquake, which scientists emphasize the most, has started to be discussed. It is said that Istanbul will be affected very much. Possible earthquake scenarios with a magnitude of 7.5 have been produced. In this study, Adalar district, which will be affected by the Great Marmara Earthquake, is considered and the problem of assigning teams to very heavily damaged buildings is discussed. For the continuation of the study, the data in the Istanbul Province Adalar District Possible Earthquake Loss Estimates Booklet is used. The 413 severely damaged buildings in the 5 neighborhoods where the destruction will occur and the number of building floors in the neighborhoods are taken into consideration. A mathematical model was created for the problem with the goal programming method. The model was solved with the Cplex solver of IBM ILOG optimization program. This study aims to analyze the thunderstorm (TS) events in the megacity Istanbul by using thermodynamic indices and atmospheric stability parameters for the period of 2001–2022. It was determined that TS events did not show any trend on an annual basis, mostly (%69) occurred in the warm season (May–September), and mostly (%93) lasted for a few hours (0–3 h). The thermodynamic indices and atmospheric stability parameters used in the study are Showalter Index (SI), Lifted Index (LI), Severe Weather Threat Index (SWEAT), K-Index (KI), Totals Totals Index (TTI), Convective Available Potential Energy (CAPE), Convective Inhibition (CIN), and Bulk Richardson Number (BRN). Annual and seasonal analyzes of all indices and parameters were performed for TS and non-TS events. Significant differences were found in both average, maximum, and minimum values. The Probability of Detection (POD), False Alarm Ratio (FAR), Miss Rate (MR), Critical Success Index (CIS), Hiedke Skill Score (HSS), and True Skill Score (TSS) were used to analyze the success of the threshold values presented in the literature in detecting TS events. Then, the seasonal successes of these threshold values were tested. It was observed that the performance of the selected indices varied across seasons. The highest predictive skill was generally observed during the summer season, with the POD value ranging between 0.58 and 0.97 and the TSS value varying between 0.32 and 0.57. Conversely, the lowest predictive skill was typically observed during the winter season, where the POD value ranged from 0.00 to 0.75 and the TSS value varied between 0.00 and 0.40. The ideal threshold values were determined for indices and parameters by increasing or decreasing the existing threshold values at certain rates. Methods and Materials: A qualitative research design was employed, utilizing semi-structured interviews to collect data. Twenty-four female athletes, aged 18 to 35, from various sports disciplines in Istanbul participated. The interviews, conducted in Turkish, lasted between 60 to 90 minutes and were transcribed verbatim. Thematic analysis was performed using NVivo software, allowing for the identification of key themes and subthemes related to media representation, identity construction, self-perception, and coping mechanisms. The study continued data collection until theoretical saturation was achieved. Findings: Thematic analysis revealed four main themes: media representation, identity construction, self-perception, and coping mechanisms. Participants reported stereotypical portrayals emphasizing physical appearance and emotional attributes over athletic skills. Media visibility was significantly lower for female athletes compared to their male counterparts, impacting their professional identity and opportunities. The internalization of stereotypes and media-driven body ideals affected their self-esteem and body image, contributing to performance anxiety and mental health challenges. Participants employed various coping mechanisms, including resilience building, support networks, media literacy, advocacy, and personal strategies, to manage the negative impacts of media representation. Conclusion: Media representation profoundly influences female athletes' identity and self-perception, often reinforcing stereotypes and cultural biases. Equitable media coverage focusing on athletic achievements and personal stories is crucial for fostering positive self-identity among female athletes. Practical steps, including media training, advocacy, and promoting media literacy, are essential to create a more inclusive and supportive media environment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, spatio-temporal identification has been analyzed using new probabilistic risk graphs for air quality assessments in Istanbul, Türkiye, for the first time. Detailed assessments can be conducted through the proposed method, which is based on probabilistic models. These models contribute to the objective explanation of variations in air quality. Air quality and its fluctuations have been elucidated using risk graphs across various districts in Istanbul. According to the model results, the air quality at Mecidiyeköy and Göztepe is worse than in the other districts. Conversely, Şile and Sultanbeyli on the Asian side, as well as Sarıyer and Maslak on the European side, exhibit the best air quality in terms of particulate matter (PM10) and NO2 model results. The proposed methodology provides air quality levels at different risk levels, enabling the tracking of temporal variations in air pollution risks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This essay presents a feminist intervention by incorporating feminist theory and ethnography into the examination of gentrification and displacement within authoritarian neoliberal urbanism. It explores the link between gentrification and the systemic crisis of social reproduction and discusses the contribution of feminist ethnography to our understanding of gendered dispossessions during state‐led gentrification and displacement. The essay concludes that integrating a social reproduction lens and employing feminist ethnography not only enhances our understanding of gendered dispossessions but also reveals the potential for empowerment in marginalized communities. Making visible the material and affective injustices and daily struggles to pursue social reproduction amidst the dismantling of marginalized lives by state‐led gentrification contributes to feminist praxis. Istanbul is an important city that carries the traces of numerous civilizations throughout history, having a strategic location and a rich cultural heritage. It has served as the capital of great civilizations, a crossroads of trade routes, and a melting point of diverse cultures. It has been a destination for many travelers over the centuries. Travelers and visitors to Istanbul have aimed to explore the unique atmosphere. Additionally, the city has captured the interest of significant statesmen, writers, artists, and scholars. The recurring visits by Hungarians to Istanbul during the late 19th century are a manifestation of this interest. These visits often transcended mere tourism, acquiring a distinct dimension with the personal receptions by state dignitaries and their accompanying of the visitors. Moreover, owing to the evolving relations between the Ottoman Empire and Hungary, Hungarian visitors enjoyed a privileged position compared to visitors from other countries. Thus, they had the opportunity to thoroughly explore Istanbul’s history and cultural fabric. They have experienced a distinctive Istanbul journey by visiting significant offices of the Ottoman Empire. Towards the end of the century, Hungarian interest in Istanbul became evident through organized journeys. They conveyed their experiences and impressions during trips to the Hungarian press. The impressions conveyed to the Hungarian media, coupled with thoughts about the Turks and Istanbul, fostered a deeper sense of intimacy between the two nations. Additionally, the accounts of these travelers offer diverse perspectives on Istanbul’s political, social, and cultural life. İsmet Pasha was appointed head of the Turkish Delegation to be sent to the Lausanne Conference. He left Ankara on 5 November 1922 and started his journey to Lausanne. The prepared study describes the period from he’s boarding of the train on November 5 to the start of the conference on November 20. In the introduction part of the study, information about İsmet Pasha's appointment as the head of the delegation was given. Then, under the first heading, He’s journey from Ankara to Istanbul, his contacts in Istanbul and his trip to Lausanne were evaluated. In this section, the days between 5-12 November are mentioned. The second title talks about İsmet Pasha's arrival in Lausanne on 12 November, his departure to Paris after the conference was postponed, and his contacts until 20 November, when the conference opened. This study aims to examine the impact of the Rumeli Railway, built by the Ottoman Empire in the second half of the 19th century, on the transformation of the urban space in the Sirkeci District by evaluating the cooperation and conflicts between the state, foreign investors, and local actors and the political, social, and urban spatial effects of the construction process. The Industrial Revolution began a process of major changes and reforms across the world. These changes led to radical reform worldwide while closing and opening an era in economic, social, and technological terms. The revolution first started in the UK and then spread to Northern Europe and North America. Steam-powered machines and vehicles are among the reasons for the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. The discovery of steam-powered trains made the construction of railways essential. The Ottoman Empire also made use of this innovation and built the Rumeli Railway in the second half of the 19th century. As the majority of the railways were built by the Ottoman Empire in the 19th century, the Rumeli Railway was funded by foreign investors; many written sources describing the processes of obtaining their privileges, plan projects describing the construction processes, and many official correspondences describing the events during the construction process are available in the Turkish Republic Presidency State Ottoman Archives (OA). This study examines the expropriation processes carried out in the historical peninsula in the Sirkeci District during the construction of the Rumeli Railway in the light of archival documents.
