1. Are there consistent relationships between major connective tissue components, intramuscular fat content and muscle fibre types in cattle muscle?

Abstract

Intramuscular connective tissue (IMCT) is mainly composed of several fibrils (known as total collagen (TCol)) linked between each other by different chemical cross-links (CLs), the whole being embedded in a matrix of proteoglycans (PGs). In the field of beef quality, there is limited information on the role of CLs and PGs. Accordingly, several authors suggest that, to investigate the role of IMCT, it is important to investigate them just like TCol and insoluble collagen (ICol). In muscle, there are two other components, the muscle fibres and intramuscular fat (IMF) content. There are limited data on the relationships between these three components of muscle and then on possibility to independently manipulate these characteristics in order to control the final quality of meat. The present study aimed to investigate whether consistent relationships exist between these different components of muscle. Therefore, the present study compared four muscles of two cattle types (dairy and beef) to determine associations between TCol, ICol, CLs and PGs. Data were analysed across and within muscle (M) and animal type (AT) based on residuals. There was a strong M and AT effect for all muscle characteristics and an interaction M × AT for type I muscle fibres and IMF. Correlations between TCol, ICol and their CLs were M- and AT-independent. Total proteoglycans were positively correlated with TCol and ICol in a muscle-dependent manner irrespective of AT, but no correlation was found with CLs. On the contrary, CLs were negatively correlated with the ratio TPGs : TCol in an M-dependent manner, irrespective of AT. TCol, ICol and CLs were positively and negatively correlated with type IIA and IIB+X muscle fibres only in longissimus thoracis (LT) muscle, regardless the AT. Insoluble collagen was the only parameter of IMCT to be correlated with type I muscle fibres but only in LT muscle, irrespective of AT. There was no correlation between PGs and muscle fibre types, but PGs were the only IMCT component to be related with IMF in an M-dependent manner, irrespective of AT. Finally, there was no correlation between muscle fibre types and IMF content within M and AT. This study revealed that there is a strong relationship between IMCT components irrespective of M, an M-dependent relationship between the IMCT components and muscle fibre types and few (only with PGs) or no relationship between IMF and IMCT and muscle fibres.

Abstract

The absence of large archaeological settlements in the Eastern Arabian Peninsula suggests that most of the recent wet periods occurring during climate oscillations in these areas were short-lived. However, a ∼ 2-by-3-km buried rectangular feature was discovered opportunistically in the southeast of the Qatar Peninsula while performing radar subsurface mapping of structural conduits for groundwater characterization. The feature is characterized by its unique contrasting patterns of surface and subsurface roughness as well as its organic-rich mixture of soils, as assessed from high-resolution radar and multispectral observations, respectively, and validated with GPR and EM subsurface probing. The above characteristics could be the only remaining evidence for a large primitive settlement due to the harsh erosive setting. To explore the natural or anthropogenic origin of this anomalous feature, we compare its dimensions, structural setting, roughness, and composition to similar formations in the Qatar Peninsula and other arid karst environments. Findings suggest that the feature is texturally and compositionally unique within the Qatar Peninsula, and is not reproduced in other arid karst terrains nor reproduced by the fracture patterns associated with the Qatar-South Fars Arch. We hypothesize that the feature is a karst depression modified by semi-stationary primitive human settlements ∼ 3640 BP or earlier based on radiocarbon dating of in-situ charcoal samples. Moreover, the organic-rich mixture of soil and the occurrence of several symmetrical features observed inside the perimeter suggest that landscaping, farming and irrigation activities could have occurred within the site, further suggesting that long-lasting wet conditions—with sufficient fresh water resources or reliance on karst aquifers—were able to sustain a relatively large primitive settlement not previously witnessed in the region’s archaeological record. Future improvements in the resolution and coverage of orbital L-band radar observations, as used above, can provide new insights into understanding prehistoric human occupation under fluctuating climatic conditions and groundwater dynamics in these hyper-arid regions.

Abstract

The sample of Solar system objects has dramatically increased over the last decades. The amount of measured properties (e.g., diameter, taxonomy, rotation period, thermal inertia) has grown even faster. The benefit of all these developments has, however, not come to full fruition. While some catalogs are publicly available in machine-readable formats on, e.g., the Planetary Data System (PDS), or the Centre de Données astronomiques de Strasbourg (CDS), a significant fraction of results are only tabulated within articles. Furthermore, the designation of small bodies often evolves with time, from potentially several provisional designations, to a single number and finally an official name. Hence, the same object can be referred to by different labels in different studies, making its cross-identification over several sources a complex task. Accessing to all the characteristics of a given body, or a population, can thus be tedious, or even impractical. A universal access point for all measured properties of Solar system objects available in the literature and online databases is thus required. We provide a practical solution to the identification of Solar system objects from any of their multiple names/designations. We also compile and rationalize their properties to provide an easy access to them. We aim to continuously update the database as new measurements become available. We built a Web Service, SsODNet, that offers four interfaces, each corresponding to an identified typical need in the community: name resolution (quaero), compilation of a large corpus of properties (datacloud), determination of the best estimates among compiled values (ssoCard), and statistical description of the population (BFT). The name resolver quaero translates any of the 5 million designations of objects into their current official designation in a fraction of second. The datacloud compiles about a 100 million measurements of many parameters (osculating and proper element, pair and family membership, diameter, albedo, mass, density, spin, phase function, color taxonomy, thermal inertia, and Yarkovsky drift) from over 2,900 articles. Each parameter is associated with an object, and a complete bibliographic reference is linked with it. For each of the 1.2 million objects in the system, a ssoCard providing a single best-estimate for each parameter is available, and delivered in json format, again in a fraction of a second. Finally, the BFT large table compiles all these best-estimates into a single eCSV file for population-wide studies. The four interfaces of SsODNet have a Web service with an application programming interface (API). The SsODNet interfaces are fully operational and freely accessible to everyone (https://ssp.imcce.fr/webservices/ssodnet/). We also propose a python package and command-line tool to acces the service: rocks (https://rocks.readthedocs.io/).

Abstract

International audience; We publish a set of 16 light curves of mutual events inside the synchronous system of the Jupiter Trojan (617) Patroclus. Patroclus is th only binary system of the six target asteroids of the forthcoming NASA Discovery-class mission Lucy. Determining the physical parameters of the system is therefore of primary importance in helping to plan the flyby mission.Light curves were acquired during two follow-up campaigns of 6 months each between January-June 2007 and July-December 2012. Eight small eclipse events of amplitude of 0.2-0.3 mag were recorded in 2007. On the other hand, in 2012, the amplitudes of the phenomena were much deeper, between 0.6 and 0.8 mag, due to a nearly edge-on configuration of the system.We refined the sidereal period to 102.78624 ± 0.00015h = 4.282760 ± 0.000005days. The J2000 ecliptic coordinates of the pole of the system were found to be λ = 235.3 ± 1.2° andβ = - 62.4 ± 0.2°. The volume ratio was determined equal to q = 0.69 ± 0.08. By using a model of inhomogeneous Roche ellipsoids in hydrostatic equilibrium, we derived a bulk density of 0.81 ± 0.16g/cm3 and a surface grain density of 2.69 ± 0.36g/cm3 in agreement with spectroscopic observations of this P-type asteroid.As a validation, our solution was applied to revisit recent results obtained from observations of another type: AO astrometry and stellar occultation. Our model is thus perfectly able to account for these observations after fitting the mutual separation to the value of 695 ± 10km. Consequently, the area-equivalent diameter of the system as a whole is derived DΑ = 168.8 ± 2.6km.

Abstract

Resolving structural elements in hyper-arid eroded karstic environments is crucial to assess their role as groundwater conduits governing the dynamic of these complex and least characterized hydrogeological systems. Of particular interest is the fine mapping of fractured carbonate sedimentary formations in Qatar Peninsula as it provides crucial insights into characterizing the dynamic of karst systems in fossil aquifers. To achieve this objective, we vectorize 3107 km of transverse tension fractures and joints at a 1:6000 scale, trending WNW-ESE and W-E around the N-S Qatar-Arch anticline in Qatar, using both L-Band SAR orbital scenes and high-resolution aerial photography. We distinguish three highly fractured areas of 15x15 km each that are correlated to areas showing upward leakage and groundwater mounding. Our preliminary results suggest these fractures to act as vertical and horizontal conduits for groundwater, from the different fossil aquifer systems in the Qatar peninsula. Validations using semi-empirical backscattering model derived from SAR and ground penetrating radar acquisitions as well as correlation to potentiometric and Total Dissolved Solids maps will be necessary to further quantify the phenomena.

Abstract

International audience; Observations of the synchronous double asteroid (3905) Doppler were carried out during a campaign of 3 months between October 2017 and December 2017. Several eclipse events of 0.2-0.3 mag were recorded. We refined the rotational period to 50.826 ± 0.002 h. The J2000 ecliptic coordinates of the pole of the system are: λ = 215 ± 2° and β = 65 ± 2°.The observed light curves have been reproduced synthetically by modeling each member of the system as an elongated ellipsoid, separated from each other by a distance equivalent to 5 times the sum of the two diameters. Assuming an identical internal composition of each component, we derived a bulk density of 3.8 ± 0.2 g/cm3. Such a high density is typical of M-type asteroids.

Abstract

International audience; Marbling and rib composition are important attributes related to carcass yields and values, beef quality, consumer satisfaction and purchasing decisions. An open-access computer image analysis method based on a fresh beef rib image captured under nonstandardized and uncontrolled conditions was developed to determine the intramuscular, intermuscular and total fat content. For this purpose, cross-section images of the 5th-6th rib from 130 bovine carcasses were captured with a Galaxy S8 smartphone. The pictures were analyzed with a program developed using ImageJ open source software. The 17 processed image features that were obtained were mined relative to gold standard measures, namely, intermuscular fat, total fat and muscles dissected from a rib and weighed, and intramuscular fat content (IMF - marbling) determined by the Soxhlet method. The best predictions with the lowest prediction errors were obtained by the sparse partial least squares method for both IMF percent and rib composition and from a combination of animal and image analysis features captured from the caudal face of the 6th rib captured on a table. These predictions were more accurate than those based on animal and image analysis features captured from the caudal face of the 5th rib on hanging carcasses. The external-validated prediction precision was 90% for IMF and ranged from 71 to 86% for the total fat, intermuscular and muscle rib weight ratios. Therefore, an easy, low-cost, user-friendly and rapid method based on a smartphone picture from the 6th rib of bovine carcasses provides an accurate method for fat content determination.

Abstract

Significant structural damages to urban infrastructures caused by compaction of over-exploited aquifers are an important problem in Central Mexico. While the case of Mexico City has been well-documented, insight into land subsidence problems in other cities of Central Mexico is still limited. Among the cities concerned, we present and discuss the cases of five of them, located within the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt (TMVB): Toluca, Celaya, Aguascalientes, Morelia, and Queretaro. Applying the SBAS-InSAR method to C-Band RADARSAT-2 data, five high resolution ground motion time-series were produced to monitor the spatio-temporal variations of displacements and fracturing from 2012 to 2014. The study presents recent changes of land subsidence rates along with concordant geological and water data. It aims to provide suggestions to mitigate future damages to infrastructure and to assist in groundwater resources management. Aguascalientes, Celaya, Morelia and Queretaro (respectively in order of decreasing subsidence rates) are typical cases of fault-limited land subsidence of Central Mexico. It occurs as a result of groundwater over-exploitation in lacustrine and alluvial deposits covering highly variable bedrock topography, typical of horst-graben geological settings. Aguascalientes and Toluca show high rates of land subsidence (up to 10 cm/yr), while Celaya and Morelia show lower rates (from 2 to 5 cm/yr). Comparing these results with previous studies, it is inferred that the spatial patterns of land subsidence have changed in the city of Toluca. This change appears to be mainly controlled by the spatial heterogeneity of compressible sediments since no noticeable change occurred in groundwater extraction and related drawdown rates. While land subsidence of up to 8 cm/yr has been reported in the Queretaro Valley before 2011, rates inferior to 1 cm/yr are measured in 2013–2014. The subsidence has been almost entirely mitigated by major changes in the water management practices of the city, i.e., a 122 km long pipeline bringing surface water from an adjacent state allowed to cease pumping in half of the wells.

Abstract

Monitoring ground deformations arising from groundwater dynamics in dense urban coastal terrains is crucial for the sustainable development of infrastructures in these highly populated areas. The city of Montreal, which is located in the Saint-Laurent plain in eastern Canada, with its fast-growing populations, is a unique case study for other similar cities in coastal terrains. The city undergoes high-level house foundation damages with densities reaching up to 89 repairs/km2 resulting from time-dependent ground deformations that are correlated to groundwater dynamics and evapotranspiration. Using Radarsat-2 C-Band synthetic aperture radar interferometry, we observe 3- to 5-mm ground line-of-sight displacement variations temporally outphased by few months relative to the 2-m subartesian aquifer hydraulic head variations. The deformations are observed over a 60-km2 area located in the central part of the Montreal Island in Canada, from 2008 to 2010. We observe displacements of ∼1 mm/year uplift in the areas covered by 15-m-thick clay layer. These displacements are well correlated to the number of house repairs. We also observe ∼2 mm/year subsidence on elevated terrains, associated with evapotranspiration. The amplitudes of the displacements observed during this two-year study are significant when integrated over the average lifetime of urban structures. We conclude that the observed ground deformations are related to the seasonal variation of hydraulic head in most of the areas of Montreal. Moreover, wetter climate forecasts over upcoming decades for this area, will accentuate groundwater level fluctuations; thus, more ground deformations are foreseen, and have to be considered in future infrastructure design standards.

Abstract

One important issue in the storage of large volumes of fluids, mainly water and CO2, in the deep subsurface is to determine the resulting field-scale-induced displacements and consequences of overpressures on the mechanical integrity of the storage reservoir and surroundings. A quantifiable estimation of displacement can be made by combining the robust, cost-effective, and repeatable geophysical techniques of micro-gravimetry, differential global positioning system (DGPS), and differential synthetic aperture radar interferometry (DInSAR). These techniques were field tested and evaluated for the first time on an active large-volume aquifer storage and recovery (ASR) project in Pendleton, Oregon, USA, where three ASR wells are injecting up to 1.9 million m 3 year −1 into basalt aquifers to a depth of about 150 m. Injection and recovery of water at the wells are accompanied by significant gravity anomalies and vertical deformation of the ground surface localized to the immediate surroundings of the injection wells as evidenced by DGPS and gravity measurements collected in 2011. At a larger scale, and between 2011 and 2013, DInSAR monitoring of the Pendleton area shows sub- centimetric deformation in the western part of the city and close to the injection locations associated with ASR cycle. Deformations are found to be temporally out phased with the injection and recovery events due to complex groundwater flow. A numerical simulation of the effect of the water injection gives results in good agreement with the observations and confirms the validity of the approach, which could be deployed in similar geological contexts to look at the mechanical effects of water and gas injections.

Abstract

We present the results of surgical treatment of eight patients operated in the service of osteoarthritis scapho-trapezo-trapezoidienne (STT) by resection of the distal pole of the scaphoid under arthroscopic. Studies have already shown the good results of this technique in open surgery. This is a retrospective study of eight patients of mean age 70 years. They had an isolated STT osteoarthritis, which is not relieved by medical treatment. They were operated between 2004 and 2007 by the same surgeon and were reviewed at a mean of 13 months by an independent examiner. The evaluation was focused on pain, range of motion and grip strength. A radiological assessment was conducted to examine a possible carpal mal-alignment. Two patients were excluded because they had received a trapeziectomy for rhizarthrosis associated. The pain had decreased in seven cases with complete disappearance in six cases. The force had been increased or stabilized in seven cases and the mobility is the same in six cases. We got six very good results, one good result and one bad result without aggravation. Furthermore, no patient had been taken, nor any complications noted. The good results obtained with this minimally invasive outpatient surgery, encourages us to offer first-line therapy in patients with isolated STT osteoarthritis is not relieved by medical treatment. The resection of the distal pole of the scaphoide under arthoscopy gives less burdensome and less complication that the arthrodesis, while providing very good results.

Resume Objectif Nous avons etudie les resultats radiologiques des embrochages percutanes dans les fractures articulaires du radius distal. Nous n’avons pas, par ce biais, de bilan lesionnel ligamentaire et articulaire direct. Dans le cadre d’un programme hospitalier de recherche clinique (PHRC) qui s’est deroule dans notre centre d’octobre 2006 a janvier 2008, nous avons realise, un bilan anatomique sous arthroscopie a la sixieme semaine, avec suivi radio-clinique sur un an. Le but etait d’etudier la correlation entre la presence de lesions anatomiques et le resultat fonctionnel a un an. Methodes Trente-cinq patients presentant une fracture articulaire de l’extremite inferieure du radius avec bascule posterieure avaient ete inclus. Trente patients etaient des femmes et cinq etaient des hommes. L’âge median etait de 62 ans. Tous les patients etaient droitiers et le cote dominant etait atteint 18 fois. Les patients avaient beneficie d’un suivi clinique et radiologique a trois, six, 12 semaines et un an. Les techniques chirurgicales retenues etaient soit la technique de Py, soit la technique de Kapandji, apres reduction et controle scopique de la reduction. Une arthroscopie du poignet etait realisee a six semaines de la synthese, lors de l’ablation des broches. Un bilan des lesions ligamentaires et de la qualite de la reduction articulaire etait effectue. Resultats Vingt-huit pour cent des patients presentaient des lesions des ligaments scapho-lunaires ou du ligament triangulaire (TFCC). Neuf patients presentaient un ecart inter-fragmentaire superieur a 1 mm et deux patients avaient une marche d’escalier de 2 mm. Conclusion L’examen clinique ne mettait pas en evidence de correlation entre les imperfections anatomiques constatees lors de l’arthroscopie et la fonction du poignet au recul d’une annee, et ce, quelle que soit la technique utilisee.

Abstract

In most accounting curricula, students enroll in the first accounting information systems (AIS) course after they have completed at least two accounting principle courses and are familiar with accounting fundamentals. However, these courses tend to teach topics as discrete subjects so many students have a poor understanding of how the data they are journalizing actually flow through an AIS. Because they have not previously thought about the concept of a system, most students also have trouble linking material in AIS textbooks to prior learning. To help students relate prior learning to AIS concepts, an in-class activity titled “Dexter Buys a Surfboard” was developed. This in-class activity was combined with a textbook reading and a required reflection paper. Statistical analyses found that the combination of a textbook reading, the in-class project, and a structured reflection paper did positively affect students' perceptions of the importance of learning about AIS. Further analyses found that GPA, accounting-related work experience, and gender were not related to the change in student perceptions, making this pedagogical technique valuable for a variety of student groups.

Research has shown that organizations historically have used accounting and financial reporting to gain needed legitimacy for their actions and existence. In the case of non-profit organizations, this legitimacy is critical for they often depend upon external contributions to survive. This article explores how the newly-formed Chicago-based philanthropic Northwestern Sanitary Commission used its financial reports to legitimize its operations as well as to respond to rumors concerning its stewardship of donated funds and supplies from 1861 to 1865 during the US Civil War. This exploration contributes to our understanding of the historical development of non-profit accounting.

Governmental entities in the United States are currently faced with a myriad of factors that are creating severe financial pressure. Revenue declines in a time of great need for infrastructure replacement are driving budget cutbacks and rescissions of alarming proportions. The general public, faced with the threat of increased taxes and fees and/or cutbacks in services, is demanding better management of and accountability for resources by governmental units. Some governmental entities, stung by criticisms of bureaucracy and waste, have attempted to strengthen their stewardship focus by finding ways to reduce or eliminate non-value-added administrative work, particularly when that work has little or no impact on constituents. In the spirit of “no good deed shall go unpunished", some governmental organizations that have attempted to increase their efficiency have drawn stinging criticism from the same public that rails against the waste associated with existing government policies and practice. The Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB), responding to calls for greater accountability for management of governmental resources, has created new rules that increase the transparency of the functions of governmental agencies by requiring them to report more information about their finances and stewardship of their resources. The purpose of this case is to assist accounting instructors by identifying the arguments for increased reporting of governmental efficiency, to discuss new accounting rules related to the promotion of government efficiency, and to provide a brief, classroomfriendly, real-world case that demonstrates the political challenges that can erupt when well-intentioned governmental officials attempt to improve the functioning of governmental activities. RESUME Les entites gouvernementales aux Etats-Unis sont actuellement aux prises avec quantite de facteurs exercant de fortes pressions sur les finances. Le declin des recettes, au moment ou le besoin de renouveler l'infrastructure se fait pressant, entraine des reductions budgetaires et des suppressions qui prennent d'alarmantes proportions. Le grand public, devant la menace de hausse des impots et des tarifs ou de reduction des services, exige de la part des entites gouvernementales davantage d'efficacite dans la gestion des ressources et la reddition de comptes. Certaines de ces entites, auxquelles on reprochait d'abuser des procedures et de gaspiller, ont tente de mieux cibler leur gerance en trouvant des facons de reduire ou d'eliminer les tâches administratives non creatrices de valeur, en particulier celles qui avaient peu d'incidence, voire aucune, sur les constituants. Abstract

The Virtual Observatory Registry is a distributed directory of information systems and other resources relevant to astronomy. To make it useful, facilities to query that directory must be provided to humans and machines alike. This article reviews the development and status of such facilities, also considering the lessons learnt from about a decade of experience with Registry interfaces. After a brief outline of the history of the standards development, it describes the use of Registry interfaces in some popular clients as well as dedicated UIs for interrogating the Registry. It continues with a thorough discussion of the design of the two most recent Registry interface standards, RegTAP on the one hand and a full-text-based interface on the other hand. The article finally lays out some of the less obvious conventions that emerged in the interaction between providers of registry records and Registry users as well as remaining challenges and current developments.

The focus of this perspective is: (1) the importance of mergers and acquisitions in the formation and growth of major accounting firms; (2) the relationship between the internationalisation of trade and the internationalisation of major accounting firms; and (3) the ways in which accounting firms have used mergers as a response to an increasingly competitive environment.

Abstract

The light output of the 324 CsI(Tl) scintillators of INDRA has been measured over a large range both in energy: 1 - 80 AMeV and in atomic number of incident ions: Z = 1 - 60. An analytical expression for the nonlinear total light response as a function of the energy and the identity of the ion is proposed. It depends on four parameters. For three of them, connected to CsI(Tl) intrinsic characteristics, recommended fixed values are proposed. They are issued from the comparative study of the forward scintillators of INDRA, based on intermediate mass fragment data. The fourth one, related to light collection and to the gain of the associated photomultiplier, is particular and may be accurately obtained afterwards, from light charged particle data. Two applications are presented: fragment identification in telescopes using a CsI(Tl) crystal as residual energy detector and the scintillator energy calibration. Abstract

When multiple types of cells from normal and diseased human skin are required, techniques to isolate cells from small skin biopsies would facilitate experimental studies. The purpose of this investigation was to develop a method for the isolation and propagation of three major cell types (keratinocytes, microvascular endothelial cells, and fibroblasts) from a 4-mm punch biopsy of human skin. To isolate and propagate keratinocytes from a punch biopsy, the epidermis was separated from the dermis by treatment with dispase. Keratinocytes were dissociated from the epidermis by trypsin and plated on a collagen-coated tissue culture petri dish. A combination of two commercial media (Serum-Free Medium and Medium 154) provided optimal growth conditions. To isolate and propagate microvascular endothelial cells from the dermis, cells were released following dispase incubation and plated on a gelatin-coated tissue culture dish. Supplementation of a standard growth medium with a medium conditioned by mouse 3T3 cells was required for the establishment and growth of these cells. Epithelioid endothelial cells were separated from spindle-shaped endothelial cells and from dendritic cells by selective attachment to Ulex europeus agglutinin I-coated paramagnetic beads. To establish fibroblasts, dermal explants depleted of keratinocytes and endothelial cells were attached to plastic by centrifugation, and fibroblasts were obtained by explant culture and grown in Dulbecco's modified Eagle's medium (DMEM) containing fetal bovine serum (FBS). Using these isolation methods and growth conditions, two confluent T-75 flasks of keratinocytes, one confluent T-25 flask of purified endothelial cells, and one confluent T-25 flask of fibroblasts could be routinely obtained from a 4-mm punch biopsy of human skin.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
