Background: McArdle disease is caused by myophosphorylase deficiency and results in complete inability for muscle glycogen breakdown. A hallmark of this condition is muscle oxidation impairment (e.g., low peak oxygen uptake (VO2peak)), a phenomenon traditionally attributed to reduced glycolytic flux and Krebs cycle anaplerosis. Here we hypothesized an additional role for muscle mitochondrial network alterations associated with massive intracellular glycogen accumulation. Methods: We analyzed in depth mitochondrial characteristics-content, biogenesis, ultrastructure-and network integrity in skeletal-muscle from McArdle/control mice and two patients. We also determined VO2peak in patients (both sexes, N = 145) and healthy controls (N = 133). Results: Besides corroborating very poor VO2peak values in patients and impairment in muscle glycolytic flux, we found that, in McArdle muscle: (a) damaged fibers are likely those with a higher mitochondrial and glycogen content, which show major disruption of the three main cytoskeleton components-actin microfilaments, microtubules and intermediate filaments-thereby contributing to mitochondrial network disruption in skeletal muscle fibers; (b) there was an altered subcellular localization of mitochondrial fission/fusion proteins and of the sarcoplasmic reticulum protein calsequestrin-with subsequent alteration in mitochondrial dynamics/function; impairment in mitochondrial content/biogenesis; and (c) several OXPHOS-related complex proteins/activities were also affected. Conclusions: In McArdle disease, severe muscle oxidative capacity impairment could also be explained by a disruption of the mitochondrial network, at least in those fibers with a higher capacity for glycogen accumulation. Our findings might pave the way for future research addressing the potential involvement of mitochondrial network alterations in the pathophysiology of other glycogenoses.

Although the relationship between paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM) and solid tumors has been described more than 80 years ago, reports of PCM and gastric cancer are rare. PCM can present before or concomitantly with the diagnosis of cancer, and its clinical presentation may rise the suspicion of malignancies or be part of reactivation by immunosuppression. We present the case of a 52-year-old Peruvian man with a signet-ring cell (SRC) gastric adenocarcinoma who after 6 chemotherapy sessions with FLOT (docetaxel, oxaliplatin, leucovorin, 5-fluorouracil) presented rapidly growing lung nodules. The lung biopsy showed yeasts compatible with Paracoccidioides sp., so he received initial treatment with itraconazole and after gastrectomy maintenance therapy with trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole accompanied by tomographic resolution of lesions.

La necesidad de construcción de un estoma es frecuente en la práctica clínica habitual. Las ileostomías por lo general funcionan adecuadamente en las siguientes 24 horas. Sin embrago, muchas veces, están asociadas a una morbilidad importante de hasta el 76%. Aunque las complicaciones derivadas de esta técnica pueden ser quirúrgicas, son las metabólicas precedidas por grandes pérdidas a través del estoma las que pasan más inadvertidas. No es infrecuente encontrarnos con pacientes portadores de ileostomías que acuden en repetidas ocasiones a los centros hospitalarios con serias alteraciones metabólicas en los que no se trata la causa subyacente. El caso que presentamos aquí es uno más de una serie publicada en esta misma revista que nos sensibiliza ante la necesidad del manejo multidisciplinar de las ileostomías y de la prevención de complicaciones mayores derivadas del mal funcionamiento de las mismas.The need to create a stoma is frequent in the daily clinical practice. Usually ileostomies work well within the first 24 hours. However, many times they are associated with important morbidity up to 76%. Although the complications derived from this technique may be surgical, metabolic complications, which are preceded by large losses through the stoma, are the ones going undetected. It is not rare to see patients carrying an ileostomy that come repeatedly to the hospital with severe metabolic impairments and in whom the underlying cause remains untreated. The case reported herein is just one of a series published in this journal making us aware of the need for a multidisciplinary approach of the ileostomies and the prevention of major complications derived from their poor functioning.

Abstract Background Poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase 1 and 2 (PARP1/2) inhibitors (PARPi) are targeted therapies approved for homologous recombination repair (HRR)-deficient breast, ovarian, pancreatic, and prostate cancers. Since inhibition of PARP1 is sufficient to cause synthetic lethality in tumors with homologous recombination deficiency (HRD), PARP1 selective inhibitors such as saruparib (AZD5305) are being developed. It is expected that selective PARP1 inhibition leads to a safer profile that facilitates its combination with other DNA damage repair inhibitors. Here, we aimed to characterize the antitumor activity of AZD5305 in patient-derived preclinical models compared to the first-generation PARP1/2 inhibitor olaparib and to identify mechanisms of resistance. Methods Thirteen previously characterized patient-derived tumor xenograft (PDX) models from breast, ovarian, and pancreatic cancer patients harboring germline pathogenic alterations in BRCA1, BRCA2, or PALB2 were used to evaluate the efficacy of AZD5305 alone or in combination with carboplatin or an ataxia telangiectasia and Rad3 related (ATR) inhibitor (ceralasertib) and compared it to the first-generation PARPi olaparib. We performed DNA and RNA sequencing as well as protein-based assays to identify mechanisms of acquired resistance to either PARPi. Results AZD5305 showed superior antitumor activity than the first-generation PARPi in terms of preclinical complete response rate (75% vs. 37%). The median preclinical progression-free survival was significantly longer in the AZD5305-treated group compared to the olaparib-treated group (> 386 days vs. 90 days). Mechanistically, AZD5305 induced more replication stress and genomic instability than the PARP1/2 inhibitor olaparib in PARPi-sensitive tumors. All tumors at progression with either PARPi (39/39) showed increase of HRR functionality by RAD51 foci formation. The most prevalent resistance mechanisms identified were the acquisition of reversion mutations in BRCA1/BRCA2 and the accumulation of hypomorphic BRCA1. AZD5305 did not sensitize PDXs with acquired resistance to olaparib but elicited profound and durable responses when combined with carboplatin or ceralasertib in 3/6 and 5/5 models, respectively. Conclusions Collectively, these results show that the novel PARP1 selective inhibitor AZD5305 yields a potent antitumor response in PDX models with HRD and delays PARPi resistance alone or in combination with carboplatin or ceralasertib, which supports its use in the clinic as a new therapeutic option.

El objetivo de este trabajo es identificar y presentar evidencias sociológicas de los costes indirectos de cumplimiento tributario en España, así como identificar los perfiles de contribuyentes más propensos a incurrir en ellos. De una muestra de 58.864 casos, analizamos las variables relacionadas con los costes cognitivos, emocionales y aquellos psicosociales relacionados con la complejidad del sistema tributario. Nuestros resultados demuestran que las obligaciones tributarias generan costes cognitivos y emocionales para los contribuyentes, percibiéndose como complejo el sistema tributario español. Con esta investigación tratamos además de revitalizar y abrir el debate sobre los costes de cumplimiento tributario en nuestro país.

Este artículo plantea una aleación interdisciplinar entre los estudios políticos con el lenguaje claro y/o la comunicación clara. Tomando como punto de partida el término de redes de políticas (policy networks), se discute, primordialmente, la existencia de comunidades epistémicas, en tanto red de profesionales con experiencia y competencia reconocidas, con capacidad potencial para incidir en el diseño de políticas públicas de lenguaje claro y/o de comunicación clara enmarcadas en los principios de transparencia y buena administración. Consiste en una investigación teórica apoyada en el análisis de textos, discursos, informes y documentos científico-técnicos que, a su vez, son fuente de información para los policy-makers. De este estudio se puede concluir que los miembros que hacen parte de la comunidad comparten conocimientos, técnicas y buenas prácticas en el uso del lenguaje claro, con el objetivo de optimizar la comunicación gubernamental y la comprensión de la información pública. Se trata de una comunidad emergente que enfrenta desafíos en términos de consolidación e institucionalización.

Se presentan los dos primeros casos en nuestro país de implantación de válvula aórtica por vía transaórtica como alternativa a las vías transfemoral y transapical para pacientes con estenosis aórtica grave no susceptibles de ciru-gía cardíaca convencional. Material y métodos: Se trata de 2 pacientes de 77 años con estenosis aórtica grave, elevado riesgo quirúrgico (EuroSCORE 19,57 y 19,54%), enfermedad arterial periférica grave y contraindicación de vía transapical, en un caso por calcificación postinfarto del ápex y el otro por toracotomía izquierda previa. Realizamos miniesternotomía en «J» por el tercer espacio intercostal derecho, exposición de aorta ascendente y punción de la misma para implantar sendas prótesis aórticas biológicas Edwards Sapiens XT de 29 y 26 mm. Resultados: El procedimiento y el postoperatorio transcurrieron sin complicaciones, con estancia en reanimación de 24 h y total hospitalaria de 6 días en ambos casos. Ecocardiografía al alta: prótesis normofuncionante sin regurgitación y gradiente medio de 10 mmHg. Conclusiones: Es un procedimiento fiable y reproducible, que utiliza un acceso muy familiar para el cirujano cardíaco, evita las complicaciones derivadas de la vía transapical y creemos puede ser de elección en pacientes con problemas respiratorios, fracción de eyección deprimida o toracotomía izquierda previa en los que no es viable la vía transfemoral.

Trioza erytreae (Del Guercio, 1918) (Hemiptera: Triozidae) is a citrus pest which produces gall symptoms on leaves and transmits bacteria associated with the citrus disease Huanglongbing, ‘Candidatus Liberibacter’ spp. In the present work, the biology and behaviour of T. erytreae were studied in different rootstock–cultivar combinations. Six rootstocks were used, Flying dragon (FD), ‘Cleopatra’ mandarin (CL), Carrizo citrange (CC), Forner-Alcaide no.5 (FA5), Forner-Alcaide no.517 (FA517) and Citrus macrophylla (CM), and six scion cultivars: ‘Star Ruby’, ‘Clemenules’, ‘Navelina’, ‘Valencia Late’, ‘Fino 49’ and ‘Ortanique’. Survival and oviposition were evaluated in a no-choice trial, and preference in a choice trial, all of them under greenhouse conditions. Trioza erytreae did not show a clear settle preference for any citrus combination. However, it was able to lay more eggs in ‘Fino 49’ grafted on CC than on FD. In terms of survival, ‘Ortanique’ grafted onto FA5 was more suitable than when grafted onto FA517, and in the case of ‘Valencia Late’, when it was grafted onto CM rather than CC. Our results showed that T. erytreae behave differently depending on the citrus combination.

The aim of this article is to investigate the existence of traveling waves of a diffusive model that represents the transmission of a virus in a determined population composed of the following populations: susceptible (S), infected (I), asymptomatic (A), and recovered (R). An analytical study is performed, where the existence of solutions of traveling waves in a bounded domain is demonstrated. We use the upper and lower coupled solutions method to achieve this aim. The existence and local asymptotic stability of the endemic (Ee) and disease-free (E0) equilibrium states are also determined. The constructed model includes a discrete-time delay that is related to the incubation stage of a virus. We find the crucial basic reproduction number R0, which determines the local stability of the steady states. We perform numerical simulations of the model in order to provide additional support to the theoretical results and observe the traveling waves. The model can be used to study the dynamics of SARS-CoV-2 and other viruses where the disease evolution has a similar behavior.

In the present work, the standardization of the methodology to obtain black ZnO nanoparticles from Arabica coffee extract as a reducer agent and stabilizer of the reaction is presented for the first time through a scalable combustion green chemistry process without obtaining dangerous byproducts. The size distribution of the nanoparticles was found between 15 and 30 nm. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy shows distorted regions from the atomic column. Whereas, the estimated energy band gap measured by UV–vis spectroscopy is 2.22 eV, which is 30% value below the typical band gap for bulk ZnO. XPS measurements show a change in the binding energy of black ZnO compared to commercial ZnO. From experimental evidence, it is proposed that the black color of zinc oxide resulted from vacancies in the ZnO structure. The vacancies in the structure were theoretically modeled considering a variation in the Coulomb interaction between Zn—O atoms by applying the Hubbard + U DFT approximation. The theoretical electronic distribution of the influence of vacancies ZnO was compared with the experimental results obtained by Raman, FTIR and the experimental profile of the valence band region. These results open the exploration of green synthesized black zinc oxide nanoparticles to possible technological applications related to catalysis.

ZnO nanostructures have attracted considerable attention because of their physicochemical properties and applications as antibacterial agents, photocatalytic reactions for pollutant removal, and electronics. Hence, efficient production and knowledge of their properties under different synthesis conditions are essential. Biosynthesis has emerged as an excellent growth-directing method for synthesizing nanomaterials, representing a soft and cleaner alternative for their production. In this study, we synthesized different ZnO nanostructures using a soft chemistry method at different growth temperatures, from 200 to 800 °C every 200 °C. The crystalline structure was estudied by x-ray Diffraction (XRD) and High-Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM). The shape and size were studied by Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), which revealed a ZnO hexagonal phase with two shapes: nanoparticles (NPs) with irregular shapes and nanorods of different sizes. The optical properties were studied by Raman and UV-visible spectroscopy, and optical absorption measurements showed bandgap tuning of the produced nanostructures. Finally, the magnetic characteristics of the samples demonstrated magnetic anisotropy due to the preference for crystalline formation and the size of the nanoparticles. The magnetic interaction between the two types of NPs increased the diamagnetism associated with the nanorods.

This work presents the synthesis by the new ‘firing salts method’ (FSM) of orthorhombic Gd _2 TiO _5 which requires only two hours at 1200 °C. X Ray Diffraction, High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy characterized it. Electron microscopy shows particle size distribution between 50–500 nm with orthorhombic structure according to Rietveld analysis. Raman—infrared spectroscopies and first principles calculations indicate that the second order contribution to the spectra comes from the Ti-O5 interactions. First principles calculations (Density Functional Theory) were used as an aid for the interpretation of the experimental results to assign the normal modes to the bands on the Raman and IR spectra; it also provided an insight of the chemical reactivity of the synthesis.

In this paper, we construct a more realistic mathematical model to study toxoplasmosis dynamics. The model considers two discrete time delays. The first delay is related to the latent phase, which is the time lag between when a susceptible cat has effective contact with an oocyst and when it begins to produce oocysts. The second discrete time delay is the time that elapses from when the oocysts become present in the environment to when they are able to infect. The main aim in this paper is to find the conditions under which the toxoplasmosis can disappear from the cat population and to study whether the time delays can affect the qualitative properties of the model. Thus, we investigate the impact of the combination of two discrete time delays on the toxoplasmosis dynamics. Using dynamical systems theory, we are able to find the basic reproduction number R0d that determines the global long-term dynamics of the toxoplasmosis. We prove that, if R0d<1, the toxoplasmosis will be eradicated and that the toxoplasmosis-free equilibrium is globally stable. We design a Lyapunov function in order to prove the global stability of the toxoplasmosis-free equilibrium. We also prove that, if the threshold parameter R0d is greater than one, then there is only one toxoplasmosis-endemic equilibrium point, but the stability of this point is not theoretically proven. However, we obtained partial theoretical results and performed numerical simulations that suggest that, if R0d>1, then the toxoplasmosis-endemic equilibrium point is globally stable. In addition, other numerical simulations were performed in order to help to support the theoretical stability results.

Citriculture is considered the most important fruit industry and involves the cultivation of several fruit varieties, which are susceptible to many plant pathogens. In this sense, soil-borne pathogenic fungi, such Rosellinia necatrix, threaten citrus fruit production worldwide because they can cause fruit loss. Therefore, we assayed the physiological reaction of novel citrus rootstocks against white root rot disease during long-term management. Data from above-ground symptoms and chlorophyll content were periodically obtained during the experimental process. In addition, plant leaf area and percentage of biomass reduction were determined for each rootstock when the experiment finished. The behavior of the inoculated tolerant rootstocks was as follows: the lowest symptom rate of SAUDPC was achieved by B11R5T25 and N40R3T25; AMB+CZO manifested the highest disease incidence; B11R5T25 and A+VOLK × Orange 19-11-8 displayed the highest and the lowest chlorophyll content, respectively; AMB+CZO and A+VOLK × Orange 19-11-8 showed the highest biomass reduction, and the lowest was detected in B11R5T25 and N40R2T19; concerning the leaf area, N40R1T18, N40R3T25 and N40R2T19 showed the lowest response, and 2247 × 2075-01-2 achieved the highest rate. In summary, B11R5T25 and N40R3T25 displayed the lowest disease rate.

In this paper, we construct a generalized epidemiological mathematical model to study toxoplasmosis dynamics, taking into consideration both cat and mouse populations. The model incorporates generalized proportions for the congenital transmission in the mouse and cat populations, along with the oocysts available in the environment. We focus on determining the conditions under which toxoplasmosis can be eradicated. We conduct a stability analysis in order to reveal the dynamics of toxoplasmosis in the cat and mouse populations; moreover, we compute the basic reproduction number R0, which is crucial for the long-term behavior of the toxoplasmosis disease in these populations as well as the steady states related to both populations. We find that vertical transmission in the cat population is essential, and affects the basic reproduction number R0. If full vertical transmission is considered in the mouse population and R0<1, we find that all solutions converge to the limit set comprised by the infinitely many toxoplasmosis-free-cat steady states, meaning that toxoplasmosis would vanish from the cat population regardless of the initial conditions. On the other hand, if R0>1, then there is only one toxoplasmosis-endemic steady state. When full vertical transmission is not considered in the mouse population, then a unique toxoplasmosis-free equilibrium exists and toxoplasmosis can be eradicated for both the cat and mouse populations. This has important public health implications. Numerical simulations are carried out to reinforce our theoretical stability analysis and observe the repercussion of some parameters on the dynamics.

The aim of this paper is to investigate the qualitative behavior of the COVID-19 pandemic under an initial vaccination program. We constructed a mathematical model based on a nonlinear system of delayed differential equations. The time delay represents the time that the vaccine takes to provide immune protection against SARS-CoV-2. We investigate the impact of transmission rates, vaccination, and time delay on the dynamics of the constructed system. The model was developed for the beginning of the implementation of vaccination programs to control the COVID-19 pandemic. We perform a stability analysis at the equilibrium points and show, using methods of stability analysis for delayed systems, that the system undergoes a Hopf bifurcation. The theoretical results reveal that under some conditions related to the values of the parameters and the basic reproduction number, the system approaches the disease-free equilibrium point, but if the basic reproduction number is larger than one, the system approaches endemic equilibrium and SARS-CoV-2 cannot be eradicated. Numerical examples corroborate the theoretical results and the methodology. Finally, conclusions and discussions about the results are presented.

Citrus is one of the most important fruit crops in Mediterranean countries such as Spain, which is one of the main citrus-producing countries worldwide. Soil-borne pathogens, such as Rosellinia necatrix, are relevant limiting biotic factors in fruit trees, due to their tricky management. This fungus is a polyphagous plant pathogen with worldwide distribution, causing white root rot in woody crops, including citrus trees in Spain. The objective of this study was to evaluate the tolerance of new plant material against R. necatrix infection. Therefore, plants of 12 different citrus rootstocks were inoculated with one R. necatrix isolate. During the assay, and periodically, above-ground symptoms and chlorophyll content were evaluated. At the end of the experiment, leaf area and plant biomass measures were obtained. Rootstocks B11R5T64 and B11R5T60 achieved the lowest disease incidence of symptoms and reduction of biomass, and were similar to their respective controls in chlorophyll content and leaf area. Carrizo citrange, CL-5146 and UFR-5 were the most affected rootstocks in symptoms and biomass reduction. This work provides information about R. necatrix-tolerant citrus rootstocks, which can constitute a new integrated, sustainable and effective long-term strategy to avoid white root rot.

Citrus are one of the most relevant fruit crops in the Mediterranean basin, which is the second-highest citrus-growing region in the world. However, these crops are mainly grown under Mediterranean semi-arid conditions, characterized by long periods of drought and torrential rain. In this work, we have assessed the response of three promising HLB-tolerant citrus rootstocks (Orange-14, UFR-1, and B11R3T27) to the application of four water stress conditions (Control, Mild water stress, Drought, and Flooding), comparing them with Carrizo citrange. Aerial plant symptoms were recorded during the experimental period, whereas plant water parameters, including stomatal conductance, leaf water potential, and relative water content, were obtained at the end of the assay. For all assessed rootstocks and variables, drought treatment was the most limiting factor, with Carrizo citrange being the most suitable rootstock under this condition. Flooding was the second restrictive treatment, in which UFR-1 was the least affected rootstock. Mid-water stress with 50% water requirements did not differ from the Control treatment, which can help save water resources in semi-arid regions. This information can be helpful for the citrus industry to increase the efficiency of citrus crops subject to water stress in semi-arid regions.

This study proposes a mathematical modeling approach for the physical capital diffusion through the borders of countries. Physical capital is considered a crucial variable for the economic growth of a nation. Here, we use an extension of the economic Solow model to describe how smuggling affects the economic growth of countries. In particular, we focus on the situation in Venezuela from 2012 to 2015. In this regard, we rely on a nonconcave production function instead of the classical Cobb–Douglas production function. Moreover, we investigate the effect of different physical capital fluxes on economic growth. The physical capital diffusion through the borders of a country is modeled based on a parabolic partial differential equation describing the dynamics of physical capital and boundary conditions of the Neumann type. Smuggling is present at numerous borders between countries and may include fuel, machinery, and food. This smuggling through the borders places challenges on a particular country’s economy. The smuggling problem usually is related to a non-official exchange rate different from the official rate or subsidies. We study the effect of smuggling on the physical capital of a country using an extended Solow model. Numerical simulations are obtained using an explicit finite difference scheme describing how the physical capital diffusion through the border of a country affects its economic growth. The study of physical capital is a paramount aspect of the economic growth of several countries. The results show that when boundary conditions of Neumann type are different from zero, the dynamics of the physical capital differ from the classical economic behavior observed in the classical spatial Solow model without physical capital flux through the borders of countries. In particular, the numerical results show that the physical capital of a country decreases faster as the flux increases on the boundaries. Thus, we can conclude that avoiding smuggling through the frontiers is a crucial factor affecting economic growth.

In this paper, we study the effect of the introduction of a time delay on the dynamics of toxoplasmosis. This time delay is the elapsed time from when oocysts become present in the environment and when they become infectious. We construct a mathematical model that includes cats and oocysts in the environment. We include the effect of oocysts, since they are crucial for the dynamics of toxoplasmosis. The likelihood of the acquisition of Toxoplasma gondii infection depends on the environmental load of the parasite. Furthermore, the model considers the possibility of vaccination of the feline host. In the mathematical model, we consider directly the infection of cats through the oocysts shed by other cats. We prove that the basic reproduction number R0 is a secondary parameter that determines the global dynamics of toxoplasmosis in cat populations. We study the effect of the time delay on the stability of the steady states. We find that the time delay cannot change the stability of the endemic state, which is an important result from the biological point of view. Numerical simulations are performed to support the theoretical results and obtain further insight into understanding toxoplasmosis dynamics in cat populations.

Boron (B) toxicity is a common limiting factor both in arid and semiarid regions, such as the Mediterranean Basin. Citrus trees are sensitive to B-toxicity, which generates a negative impact in citrus orchards. In this work, two promising citrus rootstocks (UFR-6 and 2247 x 6070-02-2) have been assessed against B-toxicity and compared with Carrizo citrange, a common commercial citrus rootstock in Mediterranean Basin. Three B concentration treatments (Control, 1 and 2.5 mM H3BO3) were established, irrigating the plants three times per week for 21 days under greenhouse conditions. During the assay, above-ground symptoms, and chlorophyll index (SPAD) were recorded. At the end of the experiment, stomatal conductance, relative water content, and B concentration in leaves and roots were determined. The increasing B concentration in plants generates visual damage in leaves for all citrus rootstocks assayed. Carrizo citrange displayed the greatest visual symptoms, decreased its chlorophyll index (SPAD), and stomatal conductance throughout the B-treatment. However, UFR-6 and 2247 x 6070-02-2 displayed less symptoms than Carrizo citrange and only reduced its parameters under the 2.5 mM H3BO3 treatment. These results can aid citrus grower rootstock planting decisions with under B-toxicity conditions.

The Mediterranean Basin is the second highest citrus growing region in the world behind China. Citrus trees are known to produce several flush shoots per year, particularly during the spring–summer season. Farmers endeavor to reduce the growth of summer shoots by means of hand pruning, especially those located at the top of the tree, as most of these shoots become vigorous, nutrient consuming, non-productive, and attractive to several pests. Furthermore, hand pruning substantially increases the costs of citrus orchards production. This research was therefore intended to study new different treatments to control spring–summer flush shoots and thus reduce growers’ investments in citrus production. Six different treatments were applied in two experimental and high density orange orchards over two consecutive years: (1) control; (2) topping (mechanical pruning); (3) dichlorprop-p; (4) triclopyr; (5) topping + dichlorprop-p; and (6) topping + triclopyr. The treatment of dichlorprop-p alone reduced the number of summer young shoots in both years. Moreover, these applications did not negatively affect yield or fruit quality. These mechanical methodologies help citrus growers manage the density of flush shoots and reduce hand labor costs in citrus orchards.

In this paper, we study and present a mathematical modeling approach based on artificial neural networks to forecast the number of cases of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). The number of RSV-positive cases in most of the countries around the world present a seasonal-type behavior. We constructed and developed several multilayer perceptron (MLP) models that intend to appropriately forecast the number of cases of RSV, based on previous history. We compared our mathematical modeling approach with a classical statistical technique for the time-series, and we concluded that our results are more accurate. The dataset collected during 2005 to 2010 consisting of 312 weeks belongs to Bogotá D.C., Colombia. The adjusted MLP network that we constructed has a fairly high forecast accuracy. Finally, based on these computations, we recommend training the selected MLP model using 70% of the historical data of RSV-positive cases for training and 20% for validation in order to obtain more accurate results. These results are useful and provide scientific information for health authorities of Colombia to design suitable public health policies related to RSV.

Phytophthora spp. are one the most common soil-borne pathogens in citrus crops, in which Phytophthoranicotianae and P. citrophthora are the most relevant species, causing disease problems worldwide, such as foot rot and gummosis of the trunk, branch canker, brown rot of fruit, feeder root rot in orchards, and seedling damping-off in nurseries. Phytophthora-tolerant citrus rootstocks are essential for its control and for the success of the citrus industry. The aim of this study was to determine the susceptibility of new citrus rootstocks with low HLB incidence to Phytophthora diseases. Thus, plants of several commercial and new citrus rootstocks originating in different breeding programs were inoculated with an isolate of P. nicotianae. Thirty days post inoculation (DPI), the damage of lesion length in stem was measured for each plant. These results displayed a different susceptibility response to the damage caused by P. nicotianae among the citrus rootstocks tested. Thus, eleven new citrus rootstocks (B11R3T25, B11R5T25, B11R5T49, B11R5T60, B11R5T64, N40R1T18, N40R1T19, N40R3T25, WGFT + 50-7, UFR-6, and CL-5146), which have not been previously studied against Phytophthora diseases, improved the tolerance effect of Carrizo citrange. Our findings provide useful information for citrus growers on rootstock selection to address incidence problems caused by Phytophthora spp.

Trioza erytreae (Del Guercio) is one of the psyllid insect vectors of the causal agents of huanglongbing. This paper proposes an assessment of the effectiveness of several pesticides with and without a pine oil-based organic adjuvant, in order to contain the spread and population of this pest and reduce the side effects on the Tamarixia dryi parasitoid. Five insecticides and their combinations with pine oil were sprayed against T. erytreae on citrus trees under semi-field and field conditions. The effect of the same treatments was assessed on T. dryi under laboratory conditions. All insecticides, except for acetamiprid, increased their effectiveness when combined with pine oil under both conditions. Cyantraniliprole, dimethoate, and their respective combinations with the organic adjuvant showed the highest efficacies against T. erytreae. Under laboratory conditions, dimethoate reported the most negative effect on T. dryi activity whereas cyantraniliprole and its combination with pine oil yielded a low toxicity effect on this parasitoid. Our results recommend the development of an integrated control approach for citrus growers based on an insecticide rotation program, preventing the emergence of pest resistance to one substance. In this sense, other insecticides, such as lambda-cyhalothrin with pine oil adjuvant or acetamiprid, could be considered.

Drought and flooding conditions are increasingly common abiotic factors that affect citrus crops in both the Mediterranean Basin and Florida. Furthermore, emerging diseases, such as Huanglongbing (HLB), are a potential risk for these crops in those producing areas. This study aimed to evaluate the behavior under water-stress treatments of three new citrus rootstocks (UFR-6, B11R5T60, and 2247 x 6070-02-2) with reported tolerance of HLB, comparing them with a common commercial citrus rootstock (Carrizo citrange). Four water conditions were established: Control, Medium Water Stress (MWS), Drought, and Flooding. Chlorophyll index (SPAD), growth in height, relative growth rate, biomass (fresh and dry weight) and plant water status were evaluated. Citru rootstock response were different for each genotype; Carrizo citrange was negatively affected by all water treatments in the chlorophyll index (SPAD) and biomass production. By contrast, UFR-6 showed a positive response in SPAD and growth under MWS and Drought, B11R5T60 displayed similar behavior to Control under all water stresses, and the response of 2247 x 6070-02-2 under MWS treatment was adequate but was not under Drought or Flooding conditions. Our study describes the behavior of these promising new citrus rootstocks against water stress; B11R5T60 exhibiting the best performance. These results can be useful for the citrus industry to address water-stress problems in these crops.

Several variants of the SARS-CoV-2 virus have been detected during the COVID-19 pandemic. Some of these new variants have been of health public concern due to their higher infectiousness. We propose a theoretical mathematical model based on differential equations to study the effect of introducing a new, more transmissible SARS-CoV-2 variant in a population. The mathematical model is formulated in such a way that it takes into account the higher transmission rate of the new SARS-CoV-2 strain and the subpopulation of asymptomatic carriers. We find the basic reproduction number R0 using the method of the next generation matrix. This threshold parameter is crucial since it indicates what parameters play an important role in the outcome of the COVID-19 pandemic. We study the local stability of the infection-free and endemic equilibrium states, which are potential outcomes of a pandemic. Moreover, by using a suitable Lyapunov functional and the LaSalle invariant principle, it is proved that if the basic reproduction number is less than unity, the infection-free equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable. Our study shows that the new more transmissible SARS-CoV-2 variant will prevail and the prevalence of the preexistent variant would decrease and eventually disappear. We perform numerical simulations to support the analytic results and to show some effects of a new more transmissible SARS-CoV-2 variant in a population.

Trioza erytreae (Del Guercio, 1918) (Hemiptera: Triozidae) is a vector of Candidatus Liberibacter spp., the causal agent of Huanglongbing disease (HLB). This study evaluates the preference of T. erytreae in different citrus seedlings. Thus, six different non-grafted citrus rootstocks were used for these experiments: (a) Carrizo citrange; (b) Citrus macrophylla; (c) ‘Cleopatra’ mandarin; (d) Forner-Alcaide No. 5; (e) Forner-Alcaide No. 517, and (f) Poncirus trifoliata (‘Flying Dragon’). The behaviour and survival of this psyllid was evaluated through the feeding preference of T. erytreae adults for different rootstocks (in a choice trial under greenhouse conditions) and oviposition and survival of T. erytreae adults on the different citrus material (in a no-choice trial under laboratory conditions). Trioza erytreae showed a clear preference for hosting and feeding on C. macrophylla, and Carrizo citrange was the most suitable rootstock for insect reproduction and survival followed by C. macrophylla. Conversely, Poncirus trifoliata was the least attractive rootstock to T. erytreae adults in the greenhouse trial and led to significantly lower T. erytreae survival. Our results suggest that conventional citrus rootstocks, such as Carrizo citrange and C. macrophylla, could increase T. erytreae populations.

The genus Citrus amounts to one of the most relevant fruit crops in the world. This work assays overall fruit quality information in order to ascertain the optimal harvest timing of three late-season orange cultivars (‘Barberina’, ‘Valencia Midknight’ and ‘Valencia Delta Seedless’) during two consecutive growing seasons. Thus, morphological and physicochemical parameters, organic acids, polyphenolic content and antioxidant activity (ABTS and DPPH) were analyzed. ‘Barberina’ yielded the highest morphological (large and heavy fruits, albeit with lower fruit color index) and physicochemical (high juice content and intermediate but optimal acidity) fruit quality, with April providing the optimal harvest timing. By contrast, ‘Valencia Delta Seedless’ offered the smallest fruits, while ‘Valencia Midknight’ reported the lowest physicochemical juice quality (low juice content and earlier sensory depreciation). Nevertheless, both ‘Valencia Delta Seedless’ and ‘Valencia Midknight’ had higher functional quality than ‘Barberina’, which could be interesting for the industry in terms of obtaining higher added value products. Thus, ‘Valencia Midknight’ fruits recorded the highest organic acids concentration, especially in citric acid, while ‘Valencia Delta Seedless’ fruits showed the highest antioxidant activity and ascorbic acid concentration. In addition, while March-April emerged as the optimal harvest timing in terms of the highest organic acids concentration and antioxidant activity, it was February the optimal harvest timing for polyphenols content. Finally, the 2017/2018 growing season proposed better response of color index, density, polyphenols and antioxidants, but lower results of total organic acids.

Salinity is a major agriculture problem for citrus in the Mediterranean basin, which is a major global producer region. Citrus crops are also threatened by emerging diseases such as Huanglongbing (HLB). The use of different rootstocks increases the variability of citrus plant material in orchards, thus preventing extensive damage caused by abiotic and/or biotic diseases. In this work, we have evaluated the salinity response of five citrus rootstocks (US942, US897, X639, Forner Alcaide No. 5 and Carrizo citrange) some of which have known tolerance to HLB, under Mediterranean conditions. Four treatments with different salt concentrations (0, 25, 50 and 75 mM of NaCl) were applied by watering the plants three times per week for eleven weeks. Chlorophyll index (SPAD), growth and plant symptom parameters were recorded on a biweekly basis. At the end of the trial, roots, stem and leaves biomass and plant mineral content were obtained. The increasing concentration of NaCl resulted in visible leave damage symptoms for all citrus rootstocks assayed, hindering plant growth in all citrus rootstocks assayed, except for X639. The highest concentration of toxic ions in leaves was detected in Carrizo citrange and US897 for Cl−, while the lowest concentration of Na+ was obtained in X639. These results provide growers with information about the sensitivity to salinity of different citrus rootstocks.
