Objectives To analyse the potential association between in-competition injuries and performance success (determined as “winning a medal”) in combined events during international athletics championships. Methods Newly incurred injuries were prospectively reported daily by the national medical teams and/or by the local organising committee physicians during 18 international athletics championships. Participation, climatic conditions and performance (medals) were collected retrospectively from the internet. Potential association between injury and performance success (win a medal) were analysed using an adjusted stepwise multiple regression and risk indicators presented as Odd Ratios (OR) (95%CI). Then, the proportions of injured competing athletes were descriptively presented among ranked and dropped-out, and medallist and non-medallist athletes. Results A total of 799 athletes competed in combined events during the included 18 championships, of these 134 (16.8%) had at least one injury. An adjusted stepwise multiple regression analysis revealed that in-competition injury was significantly associated with lower odds of winning a medal (OR = 0.45 (95% CI 0.20–0.88)). The proportion of injured athletes was higher among the dropped-out than among the ranked athletes, and among non-medallists than medallists. Design This was a total population design. Conclusions During international athletics championships, being injured during a combined events competition was associated with lower odds of winning a medal. Injury prevention could contribute to improve performance success.

An efficient use of light is essential to achieve good performances in microalgae cultivation systems. This can be challenging particularly under solar conditions where light is highly dynamic (e.g., day/night cycles, rapid changes in wind and weather conditions). Microalgae display different mechanisms to optimize light use efficiency. In the short term, when high light is encountered, several processes of photoprotection can be involved to avoid cell damages (e.g., xanthophyll cycle). In the long term, when cells are exposed to a different light intensity, pigment content changes, i.e., photoacclimation. The purpose of this study is to investigate the photosynthetic response of Chlorella vulgaris cultures grown in closed lab-scale, torus-shape photobioreactor under well-controlled light conditions, namely, constant and dynamic light transitions. Experiments were conducted in continuous mode with detailed characterization of the light attenuation conditions for each condition, as represented by the mean rate of photon absorption (MRPA), so as to characterize the time responses of the photosynthetic cells toward light changes. This enables to observe short-term and long-term responses with their own characteristic times. The mechanisms involved were found to be different between increasing and decreasing light transitions. Furthermore the MRPA was found a valuable parameter to relate the effect of light to biological responses (i.e., pigment changes) under constant light and dynamic light conditions.Key points• MRPA proved valuable to relate C. vulgaris responses to light changes.• A linear evolution was found between pigment content and MRPA in continuous light.• A rising PFD step induced fast protection and acclimation mechanisms.

Orthopedics and Sports Medicine - Abstract

Orthopedics and Sports Medicine - Abstract

Introduction Physical and rehabilitation medicine physicians commonly see patients with chronic functional ankle instability. The main anatomical structures involved in ankle stability are the peroneus (fibularis) brevis and peroneus longus muscles. Several anatomical muscle-tendon variations have been described in the literature as being sometimes responsible for this instability, the peroneus quartus muscle being the most frequent. The objective of this clinical study is to discuss the implication of the bilateral peroneus quartus muscle in functional ankle instability. Clinical case This 26-year-old patient was seen in PM&R consultation for recurrent episodes of lateral ankle sprains. The clinical examination found a moderate hyperlaxity on the right side in bilateral ankle varus. We also noted a bilateral weakness of the peroneus muscles. Additional imaging examinations showed a supernumerary bilateral peroneus quartus. The electroneuromyogram of the peroneus muscles was normal. Discussion In the literature the incidence of a supernumerary peroneus quartus muscle varies from 0 to 21.7%. Most times this muscle is asymptomatic and is only fortuitously discovered. However some cases of chronic ankle pain or instability have been reported in the literature. It seems relevant to discuss, around the clinical case of this patient, the impact of this muscle on ankle instability especially when faced with lingering weakness of the peroneus brevis and longus muscles in spite of eccentric strength training and in the absence of any neurological impairment. One of the hypotheses, previously described in the literature, would be the overcrowding effect resulting in a true conflict by reducing the available space for the peroneal muscles in the peroneal sheath.

Conclusion.

The aim of this work was to study the effect of the solvent N-methylmorpholine-N-oxide (NMMO) to pretreat Nannochloropsis oculata before the anaerobic digestion process. The results indicated that the pretreatment affects the characteristics of the cell wall, which consequently becomes more susceptible to the microorganisms attack during anaerobic digestion. The methane production was increased by 43% after the pre-treatment, from 238 ± 6 mLCH4/gVS until 339 ± 4 mLCH4/gVS. On the contrary, the methane production from Chlorella vulgaris decreased after the pre-treatment from 251 ± 4 mLCH4/gVS to 231 ± 3 mLCH4/gVS. The failure on the pre-treatment was attributed to the particular characteristics of the substrate in consequence of a previous drying step.

We present an advanced and comprehensive platform for thermal dissipation studies in TSV-based 3D ICs. A 2-tier 3D test chip with through silicon via (TSV) and μ-bump is used for thermal characterization with unprecedented precision and design exploration capabilities. A comprehensive calibrated 3D finite element model is associated to provide a predictive tool that is able to simulate the thermal mapping in any given 3D interconnect configuration with minimal error. Guidelines are finally provided for thermal optimization of 3D designs with a precision far beyond the prior art.

The structure of a supersonic hot jet at Mach 1.8 injected into a coaxial supersonic flow at Mach 1.5 is analyzed by differential interferometry, the total pressure ratio being a variable parameter. Density profiles are deduced assuming the flow to be axisymmetric. The flow is characterized by a very stable region downstream of two conical shocks and by a region located between the injection plane and the second conical shock where viscosity is locally nonnegligible and the jet exhibits high gradients permitting the transition from injection conditions to the far-field stabilized flow conditions. Density profiles superimposed on the visualizations show that the minima are always located along the boundary of the potential cone and the reflected shocks and, further downstream, along the boundary between the inner and outer parts of the jet.

3D integration has now made a place in semiconductor landscape and is coming closer from implementation in manufacturing. Although process bricks are almost all available now, there are still several challenges to solve before it is introduced in standard flows. One of those which is not commonly addressed is to get final customer's interest by showing him evaluations and results on real industrial applications. Heterogeneous integration and the possibility to partition different functions of a product in separate layers is one of the advantages of 3D integration. In this paper, product partitioning with TSV and 3D integration is demonstrated without inducing any impact on final product functionality and on early package level reliability tests.

Background: Knowing the frequency and causes of dropouts in combined events seems relevant and helpful to develop strategies of injury prevention and to better define/understand the necessary qualities for decathletes. Objective: To determine the causes of dropouts and the frequency of injury in decathlon. Design: This pilot prospective study focused on 3 high-level decathlon competitions. Main outcome measures: Data concerning athlete’s participation (number of participating athletes listed on the start list, number of athletes in the final ranking), and the causes of dropouts were collected prospectively during the 3 high-level decathlon competitions. Results: 38% of decathletes did not complete these competitions. The causes of dropout were: injury (36%), loss of motivation (36%), tiredness (9%), and indeterminate (18%). 50% of injuries were acute hamstring injuries during explosive events on the first day (100-m and long jump). Conclusions: Musculoskeletal injury prevention and motivational aspects seem important to complete an entire decathlon and to aim at best performance. More detailed prospective studies are needed to determine the exact medical causes of dropouts in combined events.

3D integration development has to be driven by industrial demand and applications. To get interested in those technological developments, industrials shall be convinced by benefits of Through Silicon Vias (TSV) integration versus traditional assembly approach. This will demonstrate that this approach is worth being more developed and implemented. In this study, we demonstrated that we are able to achieve similar performance for a given product using a standard wire bonding packaging and an integration with TSV. Both electrical measurements on test structures and characterization on product are compared.

This study aimed to assess the prevalence of cigarette, alcohol and cannabis consumption among top-ranked French student athletes aged between 16-24 years old, and to identify correlating factors. Overall, 837 athletes participated in the study (82% response rate). Among females, the amount and duration of sporting activity in which they were engaged on a weekly basis had a negative correlation to cigarette smoking and the occasional use of cannabis. Among males, however, a positive correlation of these factors was observed for cigarette smoking. Other determinants of alcohol, tobacco and cannabis use were the level of athletic competition and whether the athlete practiced a team sport (as opposed to an individual one), with some gender variations. Two major risk factors for young adult athletes were the existence of high psychological distress (for both sexes) and a lack of family support (particularly in the case of males). Further research is needed to investigate the specific motives to use so-called "recreational" drugs among young athletes engaging in high-level competition.

To investigate the medico-legal aspects of national and international procedures for monitoring prescription drug use by competing athletes. We studied the French law No. 99-223 of March 23, 1999, relating to the protection of the health of athletes? We also studied annual statistics from the Ministry of Sports concerning anti-doping controls, substances detected by the National Doping Control Laboratory and penalties applied since 2000, as well as the World Anti-Doping Code, which came into effect on January 1, 2004, and should be universally applied by 2006.Athletes registered with a federation or unregistered athletes taking part in competitions approved by sporting federations can use prescription drugs but must follow strict rules. Athletes under investigation for drug use must declare all drugs or products recently taken. The use of prescription drugs not on the list of the prohibited substances is allowed, but evidence of the use of such drugs is the responsibility of the prescriber. A medical practitioner in France who considers it essential to prescribe prohibited drugs or drugs under certain restrictions must systematically inform the athlete about the regulations by providing various certificates and forms. For international athletes, a form authorizing therapeutic use must be submitted to the validation committee of the applicable international federation. Disciplinary, ordinal and penal sanctions are also described.Prescription drug use by an athlete is never a light matter and always engages the responsibility of the doctor. Anti-doping controls and sanctions encourage physicians to comply scrupulously with the medico-legal rules set forth by the public health code and the world anti-doping code.

- Abstract
DOI: 10.1016/j.biortech.2016.04.123, Although the hydrothermal liquefaction is considered a promising technology for converting microalgae into liquid biofuels, there are still some disadvantages. This paper demonstrated that the bio-oil yield can be significantly improved by adding alcohols as co-solvents and carrying out the conversion at mild conditions (<250 °C), but at the expense of a reduced bio-oil quality. By adding ethanol, the bio-oil yields obtained (up to ∼60%) were comparable to the yield obtained at severe operating conditions using only water as solvent (54 ± 2% on average), but the quality of the bio-oil was lower. However, the main advantages of the process here described lie in the utilisation of wet microalgae (∼75% moisture) and alcohol concentrations which avoid both drying the microalgae and decreasing the amount of microalgae loaded in the reactor.

Background Decathlon and heptathlon are track and field disciplines during which participants run, jump, and throw. The training and the competitions are highly demanding from both the physical and psychological standpoints because of the frequency and intensity of the events that could lead to important risk of injury. Objective To prospectively determine the frequency, location and types of injuries suffered by the high-level decathletes and heptathletes. Design Prospective cohort study. Setting Athletes selected from the combined events French National team for heptathlon or decathlon competitions during the 1994 to 1998 seasons. Participants 69 international level athletes: 30 heptathletes (21±4 yr, 176±6 cm, 61±4 kg) and 39 decathletes (22±6 yr, 186±6 cm, 80±8 kg). Main outcome measurements All injuries were recorded during the 1994 to 1998 seasons. For each injury data, the circumstances of onset (training or competition), the injured body part, the type and the cause of injury were collected. Results Among the 69 athletes included in this study, 32 athletes presented a total of 86 injuries. The injured rate was 31.1 injuries per 100 athletes per season. 43% of the injuries occurred during competitions, 30% during training and 27% unknown. In approximately half of the cases, the injuries were caused by overuse (49%), and in the other half by non-contact trauma (43%). The majority of injuries were located on the lower extremity (77%), and 9% on the lower back. The injuries concerned tendons (41%) and muscles (23%). The most common diagnoses were knee tendinopathy (14%), followed by lower leg strain (13%), thigh strain (11%) and Achilles tendinopathy (11%). Conclusion Injuries are common in high-level decathletes and heptathletes. Specific preventive measures of the most common injuries (knee and Achilles tendinopathies, lower leg and thigh strains) should be introduced and their effectiveness evaluated by prospective surveillance.

Interventions Data concerning athlete9s participation (number of participating athletes listed on the start list, number of athletes in the final ranking), the event (or time) of dropout, and the causes of dropouts were collected prospectively during the three high-level decathlon competitions. In case injury was retained as the cause of dropout, its description was made following the IAAF and IOC recommendations. Main outcome measurements Percentage of dropouts and percentage of each dropout cause, description and percentage of injuries (circumstance, location, type). Results 38% of decathletes did not complete these competitions. The causes of dropout were: injury (36%), loss of motivation (36%), tiredness (9%), and indeterminate (18%). 50% of injuries were acute hamstring injuries during explosive events on the first day (100-m and long jump). Conclusion Not completing a decathlon is rather common due to various difficulties (physical, technical and psychological). Although caution is needed when interpreting these results due to methodological limitations, musculoskeletal injury prevention and motivational aspects seem important to complete an entire decathlon and to aim at best performance. Congenital immunologic deficiencies and congenital dwarfisms represent two seemingly unrelated disorders. Here is reported the tenth case of a definite congenital and fatal syndrome associating a severe combined immunologic deficiency and a micromelic dwarfism, affecting mainly the proximal limbs, as well as an ichtyosiform and furrowed skin disorder. Although the adenosine deaminase activity has not been determined in this patient, a 4-month old boy, this syndrome seems to be different from cases of ADA negative SCID. The associated impairment of growth and immunity emphasizes once more the close genetic linkage existing between the development of the skeleton and the lymphoid tissue.

- Abstract
The quantification of microplastic (MP) pollution in rivers is often constrained by a lack of historical data on a multi-decadal scale, which hinders the evaluation of public policies. In this study, MP contents and trends were analyzed in dated sediment cores sampled upstream and downstream of a large metropolis, in environmental deposits that exhibited consistent sedimentation patterns from the 1980s to 2021. After a thorough sedimentological analysis, MPs were quantified in samples by micro Fourier Transform InfraRed spectroscopy (μFTIR imaging) and a density separation and organic matter digestion procedure. Microplastics recorded in the upstream core are relatively ubiquitous all along the dated sequence. The results also confirmed a sever increase of microplastics levels in the downstream core, by one order of magnitude, and an increase of polymer types. Polypropylene, polyethylene, and polystyrene represent ubiquitous contamination and were predominant at the two stations, whereas polyvinyl chloride and polytetrafluoroethylene were suspected to be abundant at the downstream station, but were not detected at the upstream station. Their presence could be linked to local contamination from specific industrial sources that manufactured and utilized these polymers. Surprisingly, in the downstream station sediment has recorded a relative improvement in polymers associated with industrial sources since the 2000s and, to a lesser extent, for ubiquitous ones since the 2010s. This trend of mitigation diverges from that of global assessments, that assume uncontrolled MP pollution, and suggest that European Union wastewater policy and regulation on industrial discharges have positively influenced water quality, and certainly also on MPs. However, the accumulation of microplastics remains high in recent deposits and raises the emerging concern of the long-term management of these reservoirs., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest The authors declare that they have no known competing financial interests or personal relationships that could have appeared to influence the work reported in this paper., (Copyright © 2024 Elsevier Ltd. 50. Influence of light absorption rate on the astaxanthin production by the microalga Haematococcus pluvialis during nitrogen starvation.

- Abstract
Large amounts of astaxanthin (about 4% DW) can be produced under nitrogen starvation of Haematococcus pluvialis in photobioreactors (PBRs) exposed to high light conditions to induce a light stress. However, in PBR, the large biomass concentration usually achieved leads to strong light attenuation conditions, which makes complex the analysis of this "light stress". This study aims to elucidate the role of light transfer in astaxanthin cell content and productivity from the microalga Haematococcus pluvialis during nitrogen starvation. Haematococcus pluvialis was cultivated in a flat-panel PBR in a batch mode with sudden nitrogen starvation conditions and an incident photon flux density (PFD) of 250 µmol
hν m-2 s-1 . Different initial biomass concentrations ( C x 0 ) were evaluated, 0.21, 0.52, 1.39 and 2.21 kg m-3 . As a result, spectral mass absorption cross-sections of Haematococcus pluvialis were measured at different times during nitrogen starvation, and were used to relate the mean rate of photon absorption (MRPA) to the astaxanthin productivity. A minimum initial MRPA of 7000 ± 500 µmolhν kgx -1 s-1 was found necessary to trigger large accumulation of astaxanthin in Haematococcus pluvialis cells (up to 3.21% DW) during nitrogen starvation conditions. The results also demonstrated the link between the MRPA and the daily astaxanthin productivity of Haematococcus pluvialis cultures, introducing then the MRPA as a physical quantity of interest for a rational optimization of the light culture conditions in PBRs., (© 2023.
