We study systematics associated with estimating simple stellar population (SSP) parameters -- age, metallicity [M/H], $\alpha$-enhancement [$\alpha$/Fe] and IMF shape -- and associated $M_*/L$ gradients, of elliptical slow rotators (E-SRs), fast rotators (E-FRs) and S0s from stacked spectra of galaxies in the MaNGA survey. These systematics arise from (i) how one normalizes the spectra when stacking; (ii) having to subtract emission before estimating absorption line strengths; (iii) the decision to fit the whole spectrum or just a few absorption lines; (iv) SSP model differences (e.g. isochrones, enrichment, IMF). The MILES+Padova SSP models, fit to the H$_\beta$, $\langle$Fe$\rangle$, TiO$_{\rm 2SDSS}$ and [MgFe] Lick indices in the stacks, indicate that out to the half-light radius $R_e$: (a) ages are younger and [$\alpha$/Fe] values are lower in the central regions but the opposite is true of [M/H]; (b) the IMF is more bottom-heavy in the center, but is close to Kroupa beyond about $R_e/2$; (c) this makes $M_*/L$ about $2\times$ larger in the central regions than beyond $R_e/2$. While the models of Conroy et al. (2018) return similar [M/H] and [$\alpha$/Fe] profiles, the age and (hence) $M_*/L$ profiles can differ significantly even for solar abundances and a Kroupa IMF; different responses to non-solar abundances and IMF parametrization further compound these differences. There are clear (model independent) differences between E-SRs, E-FRs and S0s: younger ages and less enhanced [$\alpha$/Fe] values suggest that E-FRs and S0s are not SSPs, but relaxing this assumption is unlikely to change their inferred $M_*/L$ gradients significantly., Comment: 22 pages, 23 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We analyze spatially resolved and co-added SDSS-IV MaNGA spectra with signal-to-noise ~100 from 2200 passive central galaxies (z~0.05) to understand how central galaxy assembly depends on stellar mass (M*) and halo mass (Mh). We control for systematic errors in Mh by employing a new group catalog from Tinker (2020a,b) and the widely-used Yang et al. (2007) catalog. At fixed M*, the strength of several stellar absorption features varies systematically with Mh. Completely model-free, this is one of the first indications that the stellar populations of centrals with identical M* are affected by the properties of their host halos. To interpret these variations, we applied full spectral fitting with the code alf. At fixed M*, centrals in more massive halos are older, show lower [Fe/H], and have higher [Mg/Fe] with 3.5 sigma confidence. We conclude that halos not only dictate how much M* galaxies assemble, but also modulate their chemical enrichment histories. Turning to our analysis at fixed Mh, high-M* centrals are older, show lower [Fe/H], and have higher [Mg/Fe] for Mh>10^{12}Msun/h with confidence > 4 sigma. While massive passive galaxies are thought to form early and rapidly, our results are among the first to distinguish these trends at fixed Mh. They suggest that high-M* centrals experienced unique early formation histories, either through enhanced collapse and gas fueling, or because their halos were early-forming and highly concentrated, a possible signal of galaxy assembly bias., Accepted for publication in ApJ. 28 pages and 12 figures

SPIDERS (The SPectroscopic IDentification of eROSITA Sources) is a large spectroscopic programme for X-ray selected galaxy clusters as part of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey-IV (SDSS-IV). We describe the final dataset in the context of SDSS Data Release 16 (DR16): the survey overall characteristics, final targeting strategies, achieved completeness and spectral quality, with special emphasis on its use as a galaxy cluster sample for cosmology applications. SPIDERS now consists of about 27,000 new optical spectra of galaxies selected within 4,000 photometric red sequences, each associated with an X-ray source. The excellent spectrograph efficiency and a robust analysis pipeline yield a spectroscopic redshift measurement success rate exceeding 98%, with a median velocity accuracy of 20 km s$^{-1}$ (at $z=0.2$). Using the catalogue of 2,740 X-ray galaxy clusters confirmed with DR16 spectroscopy, we reveal the three-dimensional map of the galaxy cluster distribution in the observable Universe up to $z\sim0.6$. We highlight the homogeneity of the member galaxy spectra among distinct regions of the galaxy cluster phase space. Aided by accurate spectroscopic redshifts and by a model of the sample selection effects, we compute the galaxy cluster X-ray luminosity function and we present its lack of evolution up to $z=0.6$. Finally we discuss the prospects of forthcoming large multiplexed spectroscopic programmes dedicated to follow up the next generation of all-sky X-ray source catalogues., 19 pages, 21 figures. We estimate ages, metallicities, $\alpha$-element abundance ratios and stellar initial mass functions of elliptical (E) and S0 galaxies from the MaNGA-DR15 survey. We stack spectra and use a variety of single stellar population synthesis models to interpret the absorption line strengths in these spectra. We quantify how these properties vary across the population, as well as with galactocentric distance. This paper is the first of a series and is based on a sample of pure elliptical galaxies at z $\le$ 0.08. We show that the properties of the inner regions of Es with the largest luminosity (L$_r$) and central velocity dispersion ($\sigma_0$) are consistent with those associated with the commonly used Salpeter IMF, whereas a Kroupa-like IMF is a better description at $\sim$ 0.8R/Re (assuming [Ti/Fe] variations are limited). For these galaxies the stellar mass-to-light ratio decreases at most by a factor of 2 from the central regions to Re. In contrast, for lower L$_r$ and $\sigma_0$ galaxies, the IMF is shallower and M$_{*}$/L$_r$ in the central regions is similar to the outskirts. Although a factor of 2 is smaller than previous reports based on a handful of galaxies, it is still large enough to matter for dynamical mass estimates. Accounting self-consistently for these gradients when estimating both M$_{*}$ and M$_{dyn}$ brings the two into good agreement: gradients reduce M$_{dyn}$ by $\sim$ 0.2 dex while only slightly increasing the M$_{*}$ inferred using a Kroupa IMF. This is a different resolution of the M$_{*}$-M$_{dyn}$ discrepancy than has been followed in the recent literature where M$_{*}$ of massive galaxies is increased by adopting a Salpeter IMF while leaving Mdyn unchanged. A companion paper discusses how stellar population differences are even more pronounced if one separates slow from fast rotators.

We present the first data release of the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA)–Arizona Radio Observatory (ARO) Survey of CO Targets (MASCOT), a European Southern Observatory public spectroscopic survey conducted at the ARO. We measure the CO(1–0) line emission in a sample of 187 nearby galaxies selected from the MaNGA survey that has obtained integral field unit (IFU) spectroscopy for a sample of ∼10 000 galaxies at low redshift. The main goal of MASCOT is to probe the molecular gas content of star-forming galaxies with stellar masses >109.5 M⊙ and with associated MaNGA IFU observations and well-constrained quantities like stellar masses, star formation rates, and metallicities. In this paper, we present the first results of the MASCOT survey, providing integrated CO(1–0) measurements that cover several effective radii of the galaxy and present CO luminosities, CO kinematics, and estimated H2 gas masses. We observe that the decline of the galaxy star formation rate with respect to the star formation main sequence increases with the decrease of molecular gas and with a reduced star formation efficiency, in agreement with results of other integrated studies. Relating the molecular gas mass fractions with the slope of the stellar age gradients inferred from the MaNGA observations, we find that galaxies with lower molecular gas mass fractions tend to show older stellar populations close to the galactic centre, while the opposite is true for galaxies with higher molecular gas mass fractions, providing tentative evidence for inside-out quenching. © 2021 The Author(s)., DW is supported by through the Emmy Noether Programme of the German Research Foundation. We present deep rest-frame UV spectroscopic observations using the Gran Telescopio Canarias of six gravitationally lensed Ly¿ emitters (LAEs) at 2.36 < z < 2.82 selected from the BELLS GALLERY survey. By taking the magnifications into account, we show that LAEs can be as luminous as LLy¿ ¿ 30 × 1042 erg s-1 and MUV ¿ -23 (AB) without invoking an AGN component, in contrast with previous findings. We measure Ly¿ rest-frame equivalent widths, EW0 (Ly¿), ranging from 16 to 50 Å and Ly¿ escape fractions, f_esc (Ly¿), from 10 per cent to 40 per cent. Large EW0 (Ly¿) and f_esc (Ly¿) are found predominantly in LAEs showing weak low-ionization ISM absorption (EW0 ¿ 1 Å) and narrow Ly¿ profiles (¿300 km s-1 FWHM) with their peak close (¿80 km s-1) to their systemic redshifts, suggestive of less scatter from low H I column densities that favours the escape of Ly¿ photons. We infer stellar metallicities of Z/Z¿ ¿ 0.2 in almost all LAEs by comparing the P-Cygni profiles of the wind lines N V1240 Å and C IV1549 Å with those from stellar synthesis models. We also find a trend between MUV and the velocity offset of ISM absorption lines, such as the most luminous LAEs experience stronger outflows. The most luminous LAEs show star formation rates up to ¿180 M¿ yr-1, yet they appear relatively blue (ßUV ¿ -1.8 to -2.0) showing evidence of little dust attenuation [E(B - V) = 0.10-0.14]. These luminous LAEs may be particular cases of young starburst galaxies that have had no time to form large amounts of dust. If so, they are ideal laboratories to study the early phase of massive star formation, stellar and dust mass growth, and chemical enrichment histories of starburst galaxies at high-z., With funding from the Spanish government through the "María de Maeztu Unit of Excellence" accreditation (MDM-2017-0737)

We use the first release of the SDSS/MaStar stellar library comprising ~9000, high S/N spectra, to calculate integrated spectra of stellar population models. The models extend over the wavelength range 0.36-1.03 micron and share the same spectral resolution (R~1800) and flux calibration as the SDSS-IV/MaNGA galaxy data. The parameter space covered by the stellar spectra collected thus far allows the calculation of models with ages and chemical composition in the range t>200 Myr, -2 0.7 micron absorption spectra. Moreover, a better parameter coverage at low metallicity allows the calculation of models as young as 500 Myr and the full account of the Blue Horizontal Branch phase of old populations. We present models adopting two independent sets of stellar parameters (T_eff, logg, [Z/H]). In a novel approach, their reliability is tested 'on the fly' using the stellar population models themselves. We perform tests with Milky Way and Magellanic Clouds globular clusters, finding that the new models recover their ages and metallicities remarkably well, with systematics as low as a few per cent for homogeneous calibration sets. We also fit a MaNGA galaxy spectrum, finding residuals of the order of a few per cent comparable to the state-of-art models, but now over a wider wavelength range., 37 pages, 31 figures, MNRAS in press, models available at http://www.icg.port.ac.uk/mastar

The Milky Way provides an ideal laboratory to test our understanding of galaxy evolution, owing to our ability to observe our Galaxy over fine scales. However, connecting the Galaxy to the wider galaxy population remains difficult, due to the challenges posed by our internal perspective and to the different observational techniques employed. Here, we present a sample of galaxies identified as Milky Way Analogs (MWAs) on the basis of their stellar masses and bulge-to-total ratios, observed as part of the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey. We analyse the galaxies in terms of their stellar kinematics and populations as well as their ionised gas contents. We find our sample to contain generally young stellar populations in their outskirts. However, we find a wide range of stellar ages in their central regions, and we detect central AGN-like or composite-like activity in roughly half of the sample galaxies, with the other half consisting of galaxies with central star-forming emission or emission consistent with old stars. We measure gradients in gas metallicity and stellar metallicity that are generally flatter in physical units than those measured for the Milky Way; however, we find far better agreement with the Milky Way when scaling gradients by galaxies' disc scale lengths. From this, we argue much of the discrepancy in metallicity gradients to be due to the relative compactness of the Milky Way, with differences in observing perspective also likely to be a factor., 33 pages, 28 figures. We present two wide-field catalogs of photometrically-selected emission line galaxies (ELGs) at z=0.8 covering about 2800 deg^2 over the south galactic cap. The catalogs were obtained using a Fisher discriminant technique described in a companion paper. The two catalogs differ by the imaging used to define the Fisher discriminant: the first catalog includes imaging from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and the Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer, the second also includes information from the South Galactic Cap U-band Sky Survey (SCUSS). Containing respectively 560,045 and 615,601 objects, they represent the largest ELG catalogs available today and were designed for the ELG programme of the extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS). We study potential sources of systematic variation in the angular distribution of the selected ELGs due to fluctuations of the observational parameters. We model the influence of the observational parameters using a multivariate regression and implement a weighting scheme that allows effective removal of all of the systematic errors induced by the observational parameters. We show that fluctuations in the imaging zero-points of the photometric bands have minor impact on the angular distribution of objects in our catalogs. We compute the angular clustering of both catalogs and show that our weighting procedure effectively removes spurious clustering on large scales. We fit a model to the small scale angular clustering, showing that the selections have similar biases of 1.35/D_a(z) and 1.28/D_a(z). To test different ELG selection algorithms, 9000 spectra were observed with the SDSS spectrograph as a pilot survey based on data from several imaging surveys. First, using visual inspection and redshift quality flags, we show that the automated spectroscopic redshifts assigned by the pipeline meet the quality requirements for a reliable BAO measurement. We also show the correlations between sky emission, signal-to-noise ratio in the emission lines, and redshift error. Then we provide a detailed description of each target selection algorithm we tested and compare them with the requirements of the eBOSS experiment. As a result, we provide reliable redshift distributions for the different target selection schemes we tested. The influence of texture in Bi‐2223 ingots on the temperature dependence of the μ+ spin relaxation rate has been investigated. Texture was induced during cold‐isostatic‐pressing by applying an additional uniaxial load which tends to align single grain c axes along the stress direction, \widehatz. Small plates were cut with faces either \Vert or \perp \widehatz and μSRwas measured in a 15 mT transverse field (TF) during cooling from room temperature to 6 K. While for highly‐textured material, low‐temperature limits are substantially smaller than expected, the large shift (55%) observed when switching from \widehatz\perp TF to \widehatz\,\Vert TF clearly indicates that anisotropy has developed. Relaxation rates for the weakly‐textured sample lie in between. To a lesser extent, sintering also enhanced the low‐temperature relaxation, but did not affect TC significantly. All samples showed a weak onset of depolarization between 60 K and 90 K, most likely due to the presence of a Bi‐2212 impurity phase. This impurity phase might cause the transition‐temperature smearing in the 100–110 K range in the weakly textured (and less compacted) material. Thus the sharpness of the relaxation drop might be relevant for assessment of material quality and be used as a criterion in the improvement of the production process.
