A handful of 'child‐friendly' judgments have emerged in the UK in recent years, attempting to adopt a child‐centred approach to the decision‐making stage of the legal process. Most notable is Sir Peter Jackson's judgment in Re A: Letter to a Young Person which, in taking the form of a letter to the child, has been applauded as a model of how to achieve 'child friendly justice'. This article examines how and why the form and presentation of judicial decisions is an important aspect of children's access to justice, considering not just the potential but the duty of judges to enhance children's status and capacities as legal citizens through judgment writing. We identify four potential functions of judgments written for children (communicative, developmental, instructive and legally transformative), and call for a radical reappraisal of the way in which judgments are constructed and conveyed with a view to promoting children's access to justice. Wellington, New Zealand is a major international screen production base for movies including Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies. New Zealand production companies like Jackson's Weta Group producing content for international markets benefit from local policy settings that support such productions. In 2008, a group of long-time Jackson collaborators including Richard Taylor established Pukeko Pictures. In a small country with a deregulated media system, no dedicated public service broadcaster, and minimal supports for children's television, Pukeko is a successful, globally oriented producer of children's content. This article examines the strategies that underpin Pukeko Pictures' production portfolio, which includes the 2015 reboot Thunderbirds Are Go, and a preschool coproduction with China. The combination of dispersed production practices, local subsidies, and quality infrastructure contribute to Pukeko Pictures' success. We suggest, however, that strategic international relationships managed by Taylor are also critical to Pukeko Pictures developing a significant foothold in transnational television services. It suggests that two such versions (Angela Carter's “The Christchurch Murder’ and Peter Jacksons Heavenly Creatures) should be seen as adaptations and read in light of a series of intertextual references to the adaptors’ wider bodies of work. Moreover, it suggests that the writing of Pauline and Juliet is integral to each adaptation of the case. The murder was imbricated in an increasingly complex set of fantasies recorded in the girls’ poetry and prose and, particularly, in Pauline's diaries. By centralizing this document and the role played by writing in the lead-up to the crime, Carter and Jackson invoke a source text and, at the same time, tacitly introduce questions of authorship and agency. While Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings (LOTR) trilogy has been the subject of an enormous amount of publications, the three books discussed here are particularly interesting because they address from different methodological perspectives the topics at stake in state-of-the-art global research on contemporary American cinema. If Kristin Thompson (The Frodo Franchise, University of California Press) chose to closely follow the (post)production process, Martin Barker and Ernest Mathijs (Watching the Lord of the Rings, Peter Lang) instead analysed the response of world audiences, and the research group led by Sean Cubitt, Harriet Margolis, Barry King and Thierry Jutel (Studying the Event Film, Manchester University Press) focused on the relationship between the films and the place where they were produced, New Zealand. Therefore, the complexity of the LOTR phenomenon is analysed in all its components. Thompson's book is the most documented of the three, providing relevant insights into the production process of the film; Barker and Mathijs address important issues about the reception of contemporary cinema, but their analyses are often arguable because of some theoretical and methodological weaknesses; finally, mixing both points of view, Cubitt's team seems to achieve a greater understanding of its subject. The need for an interdisciplinary and comparative approach is in fact the first important suggestion we can draw from their comparison. The adoption of a critical point of view, mostly evident in Studying the Event Film, proves to be necessary when discussing the political economy and the cultural significance of Hollywood blockbusters. The centrality of globalisation as a crucial category for contemporary film studies is revealed by all the books, which offer an American, a New Zealand and a global point of view on this worldwide successful saga.
