Abstract Background Central Michigan University (CMU) participated in a state-wide SARS-CoV-2 wastewater monitoring program since 2021. Wastewater samples were collected from on-campus sites and nine off-campus wastewater treatment plants servicing small metropolitan and rural communities. SARS-CoV-2 genome copies were quantified using droplet digital PCR and results were reported to the health department. Results One rural, off-campus site consistently produced higher concentrations of SARS-CoV-2 genome copies. Samples from this site were sequenced and contained predominately a derivative of Alpha variant lineage B.1.1.7, detected from fall 2021 through summer 2023. Mutational analysis of reconstructed genes revealed divergence from the Alpha variant lineage sequence over time, including numerous mutations in the Spike RBD and NTD. Conclusions We discuss the possibility that a chronic SARS-CoV-2 infection accumulated adaptive mutations that promoted long-term infection. This study reveals that small wastewater treatment plants can enhance resolution of rare events and facilitate reconstruction of viral genomes due to the relative lack of contaminating sequences.

Per- and Polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) are a broad class of synthetic compounds that have fluorine substituted for hydrogen in several or all locations and are globally categorized as PFCs (perfluorochemicals; commonly called fluorinated chemicals). These compounds have unique chemical and physical properties that enable their use in non-stick surfaces, fire-fighting efforts, and as slick coatings. However, recent concerns over the health effects of such compounds, specifically perfluorooctanoic acid and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOA, PFOS; PFOA/S), have led to increased attention and research by the global community into degradation methods. In this study, soil samples from PFAS-contamination sites were cultured and screened for microbes with PFOA/S degradation potential, which led to the identification of Delftia acidovorans. It was found that D. acidovorans isolated from PFAS-contaminated soils was capable of growth in minimal media with PFOA as a sole carbon resource, and an observable fluoride concentration increase was observed when cells were exposed to PFOA. This suggests potential activity of a dehalogenase enzyme that may be of use in PFOA or PFAS microbial remediation efforts. Several associated haloacid dehalogenases have been identified in the D. acidovorans genome and have been engineered for expression in Escherichia coli for rapid production and purification. These enzymes have shown potential for enzymatic defluorination, a significant step in biological degradation and removal of PFOA/S from the environment. We hypothesize that bioremediation of PFAS using naturally occurring microbial degradation pathways may represent a novel approach to remove PFAS contamination.

Monolithic integration of Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS) directly within CMOS technology offers enhanced functionality for integrated circuits (IC) and the potential improvement of system-level performance for MEMS devices in close proximity to biasing and sense circuits. While the bulk of CMOS-MEMS solutions involve post-processing of CMOS chips to define freely-suspended MEMS structures, there are key applications and conditions under which a solid, unreleased acoustic structure composed of the CMOS stack is preferred. Unreleased CMOS-MEMS devices benefit from lower barrier-to-entry with no post-processing of the CMOS chip, simplified packaging, robustness under acceleration and shock, stress gradient insensitivity, and opportunities for frequency scaling. This paper provides a review of advances in unreleased CMOS-MEMS devices over the past decade, with focus on dispersion engineering of guided waves in CMOS, acoustic confinement, CMOS-MEMS transducers, and large signal modeling. We discuss performance limits with standard capacitive transduction, with emphasis on performance boost with emerging CMOS materials including ferroelectrics under development for memory.

Abstract Understanding the interactions among agricultural processes, soil, and plants is necessary for optimizing crop yield and productivity. This study focuses on developing effective monitoring and analysis methodologies that estimate key soil and plant properties. These methodologies include data acquisition and processing approaches that use unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and surface geophysical techniques. In particular, we applied these approaches to a soybean farm in Arkansas to characterize the soil–plant coupled spatial and temporal heterogeneity, as well as to identify key environmental factors that influence plant growth and yield. UAV-based multitemporal acquisition of high-resolution RGB (red–green–blue) imagery and direct measurements were used to monitor plant height and photosynthetic activity. We present an algorithm that efficiently exploits the high-resolution UAV images to estimate plant spatial abundance and plant vigor throughout the growing season. Such plant characterization is extremely important for the identification of anomalous areas, providing easily interpretable information that can be used to guide near-real-time farming decisions. Additionally, high-resolution multitemporal surface geophysical measurements of apparent soil electrical conductivity were used to estimate the spatial heterogeneity of soil texture. By integrating the multiscale multitype soil and plant datasets, we identified the spatiotemporal co-variance between soil properties and plant development and yield. Our novel approach for early season monitoring of plant spatial abundance identified areas of low productivity controlled by soil clay content, while temporal analysis of geophysical data showed the impact of soil moisture and irrigation practice (controlled by topography) on plant dynamics. Our study demonstrates the effective coupling of UAV data products with geophysical data to extract critical information for farm management.

Selectivity in carbene insertion reactions promoted by Ru(II)porphyrinates is achieved only upon careful control of substrate stoichiometry. Here, the authors demonstrate that endotopic catalysis and formation of mechanical bonds enables carbene insertions to occur selectively and in quantitative yield regardless of substrate stoichiometry.

Terrestrial vegetation is a substantial carbon sink and plays a foundational role in regional and global climate change mitigation strategies. The state of California, USA, commits to achieving carbon neutrality by 2045 in part by managing terrestrial ecosystems to sequester more than 80 MMT of CO _2 . We used a 35-year net primary productivity (NPP) remote sensing product with gridded climate, soil, topography, and vegetation data to evaluate spatiotemporal drivers of NPP variation and identify drivers of NPP response to extremes in water availability in California’s major grasslands, shrublands, and woodlands. We used generalized boosted models (GBMs) and linear mixed effects models (LMMs) to identify influential predictors of NPP and characterize their relationships with NPP across seven major vegetation cover types: annual grasslands, blue oak, chamise-redshank chaparral, coastal scrub, coastal oak woodland, mixed chaparral, and montane hardwood. Climate seasonality, specifically greater precipitation and warmer minimum temperatures in early spring and winter, was associated with greater NPP across space, particularly in chaparral, blue oak, and grassland systems. Maximum annual temperature and climatic water deficit (CWD) showed a negative relationship with NPP in most vegetation cover types, particularly chaparral and coastal scrub. We found a significant decrease in NPP over time in most vegetation types, appearing to coincide with the 2012–2016 California mega-drought. However, response to water availability extremes differed by vegetation type. In most vegetation types, especially grasslands, increases in NPP in extreme wet years were greater than declines in NPP in dry years. Our analysis characterizes several climate risks and conservation opportunities in using California’s natural lands to store carbon. Namely, shifts in climate seasonality and water availability extremes threaten these systems’ ability to fix carbon, yet hotspots of NPP resilience may exist and could be enhanced through conservation and restoration. Additional mechanistic work can help illuminate these opportunities and prioritize conservation decision making.

This work describes a novel fluorescent 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole derivative designed to act as a water-soluble and selective bioprobe for plasma membrane imaging. The new compound was efficiently synthesized in a two-step procedure with good yields. The photophysical properties were evaluated and the dye proved to have an excellent photostability in several solvents. DFT calculations were found in agreement with the experimental data and helped to understand the stabilizing intramolecular charge-transfer process from the first excited state. The new fluorescent derivative could be applied as selective bioprobe in several cell lines and displayed plasma-membrane affinity during the imaging experiments for all tested models.

Microalbuminuria, a clinical marker associated with cancer and hypertension, defined by low albumin levels in the urine, is normally detected by immunoassay. Herein, a nanosensor paint was developed using a polymer to mimic fatty acid binding to albumin, transduced by carbon nanotube fluorescence.

A 10.5 nm silicon doped HfO2 film is deposited and examined on three different bottom electrodes: a TiN electrode such as would be found in capacitive FeRAM, a lightly doped p-Si substrate as would be present in an FeFET, and an n+ Si electrode. The HfO2 stack deposited on n+ silicon is shown to have a coercive voltage of 2.9 V compared to 1.9 V for the film deposited on TiN. This is shown to be due to a 1.2 nm oxide present at the HfO2/Si interface dropping 36% of the voltage that is applied to the ferroelectric film stack. An FeFET fabricated with the film shows a 0.55 V threshold voltage shift due to ferroelectric polarization charge for a maximum applied gate bias of 5 V. After accounting for non-zero flat-band voltages, a 5 V bias on the transistor gate is shown to correspond to a 5.3 (μC/cm2) remnant polarization in the ferroelectric film. This corresponds with a theoretical maximum threshold voltage shift of 9.46 V, indicating that there is significant room for growth in FeFET performance if materials and processing challenges can be overcome.

Drug development is a complicated, slow and expensive process with high failure rates. One strategy to mitigate these factors is to recycle existing drugs with viable safety profiles and have gained Food and Drug Administration approval following extensive clinical trials. Cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases are difficult to treat, and there exist few effective therapeutics, necessitating the development of new, more efficacious drugs. Recent scientific studies have led to a mechanistic understanding of heart and brain disease progression, which has led researchers to assess myriad drugs for their potential as pharmacological treatments for these ailments. The focus of this review is to survey strategies for the selection of drug repurposing candidates and provide representative case studies where drug repurposing strategies were used to discover therapeutics for cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases, with a focus on anti-inflammatory processes where new drug alternatives are needed.

Unsupervised classification or clustering of multi-decadal land surface phenology provides a spatio-temporal synopsis of natural and agricultural vegetation response to environmental variability and anthropogenic activities. Notwithstanding the detailed temporal information available in calibrated bi-monthly normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and comparable time series, typical pre-classification workflows average a pixel’s bi-monthly index within the larger multi-decadal time series. While this process is one practical way to reduce the dimensionality of time series with many hundreds of image epochs, it effectively dampens temporal variation from both intra and inter-annual observations related to land surface phenology. Through a novel application of object-based segmentation aimed at spatial (not temporal) dimensionality reduction, all 294 image epochs from a Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) bi-monthly NDVI time series covering the northern Fertile Crescent were retained (in homogenous landscape units) as unsupervised classification inputs. Given the inherent challenges of in situ or manual image interpretation of land surface phenology classes, a cluster validation approach based on transformed divergence enabled comparison between traditional and novel techniques. Improved intra-annual contrast was clearly manifest in rain-fed agriculture and inter-annual trajectories showed increased cluster cohesion, reducing the overall number of classes identified in the Fertile Crescent study area from 24 to 10. Given careful segmentation parameters, this spatial dimensionality reduction technique augments the value of unsupervised learning to generate homogeneous land surface phenology units. By combining recent scalable computational approaches to image segmentation, future work can pursue new global land surface phenology products based on the high temporal resolution signatures of vegetation index time series.

An interesting practical experiment about the preparation of dye–sensitized solar cells (DSSC) using natural dyes were carried out by the undergraduate students in the chemistry course at UNICAMP . Natural dyes were extracted from blueberries (Vaccinium myrtillus L.), jabuticabas (Myrciaria cauliflora), raw and cooked beets (Beta vulgaris L.), and annattos (Bixa orellana L.), which were used to sensitize TiO2 films that composed the photoanode in the DSSC. A polymer electrolyte containing an iodide/triiodide redox couple was used in lieu of the use of liquid solutions to prevent any leakage in the devices. A maximum solar-to-electric energy conversion of 0.26 ± 0.02% was obtained for the solar cell prepared with annatto extracts. This experiment was an effective way to illustrate to the undergraduate students how to apply some of the chemical concepts that they learned during their chemistry course to produce electric energy from a clean and renewable energy source. Teachers could also exploit the basics of the electronic transitions in inorganic and organic compounds (e.g., metal-to-ligand charge transfer and ϖ-ϖ* transitions), thermodynamics (e.g., Gibbs free energy), acid–base reactions in the oxide solid surface and electrolyte, and band theory (i.e., the importance of the Fermi level energy).

Cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) exhibit remarkable properties such as being lightweight, renewability, nanoscale dimension, raw material availability, and a unique morphology. They have been widely used in film-forming composites, but the literature is scarce concerning bulky-composites (i.e., non-filmogenic). Microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) is widely available and has emerged as an important material for the reinforcement of composites. This investigation focuses on the preparation of non-filmogenic composites prepared from a polyurethane-type matrix, based on modified lignosulfonate and castor oil, reinforced with CNC or MCC, aiming to compare their reinforcing capacity. CNC was obtained through the acid hydrolysis of MCC. Sodium lignosulfonate was chemically modified using glutaraldehyde to increase its reactivity towards isocyanate groups in the synthesis of lignopolyurethane. The results show that adding CNC or MCC led to materials with improved impact strength, flexural properties, and storage modulus compared to pristine lignopolyurethane. With the exception of the flexural modulus, which was higher for the CNC-reinforced composite compared to the MCC-reinforced composite, all other properties were similar. The set of results indicates that CNC and MCC are promising for the reinforcement of polyurethane-type matrices. Bulky materials with good properties and prepared from high renewable raw material contents were obtained, meeting current expectations concerning sustainable development.

We present a study of polycrystalline thin films of the rock salt rare earth nitride GdN grown on amorphous fused silica at ambient temperature with varying N _2 pressure. X-ray diffraction measurements show a strong (111) preferential orientation for all N _2 pressure and the signature of a secondary phase of GdN that develops as the N _2 pressure decreases. The secondary phase is found to have a smaller lattice parameter than the near-stoichiometric GdN. Raman spectroscopy, electrical and magnetic results support the coexistence of such mixed-phase samples with the lattice distortion originating from nitrogen vacancies. Significantly the magnetic data show an increase of the ferromagnetic onset temperature as the secondary phase develops, without affecting the soft ferromagnetic character of GdN.

Abstract A general protocol is developed to obtain D‐glucosamine from three widely available biomass residues: shrimp shells, cicada sloughs, and cockroaches. The protocol includes three steps: (1) demineralization, (2) deproteinization, and (3) chitin hydrolysis. This simple, general protocol opens the door to obtain an invaluable nitrogen‐containing compound from three biomass residues, and it can potentially be applied to other chitin sources. White needle‐like crystals of pure D‐glucosamine are obtained in all cases upon purification by crystallization. Characterization data (NMR, IR, and mass spectrometry) of D‐glucosamine obtained from the three chitin sources are similar and confirm its high purity. NMR investigation demonstrates that D‐glucosamine is obtained mainly as the α‐anomer, which undergoes mutarotation in aqueous solution achieving equilibrium after 440 min, in which the anomeric glucosamine distribution is 60% α‐anomer and 40% β‐anomer.

Effective governance is crucial to efforts to maximize effective management of care in the hospital setting. Emerging from this complex literature is the role of leadership in the clinical setting. The importance of effective clinical leadership in ensuring a high quality health care system that consistently provides safe and efficient care has been reiterated in the scholarly literature and in various government reports. Recent inquiries, commissions, and reports have promoted clinician engagement and clinical leadership as critical to achieving and sustaining improvements to care quality and patient safety. In this discursive paper, we discuss clinical leadership in health care, consider published definitions of clinical leadership, synthesize the literature to describe the characteristics, qualities, or attributes required to be an effective clinical leader, consider clinical leadership in relation to hospital care, and discuss the facilitators and barriers to effective clinical leadership in the hospital sector. Despite the widespread recognition of the importance of effective clinical leadership to patient outcomes, there are some quite considerable barriers to participation in clinical leadership. Future strategies should aim to address these barriers so as to enhance the quality of clinical leadership in hospital care. Aim: To explore the cost-effectiveness of laparoscopic colorectal surgery, compared to open methods, using quality of life data gathered in the first 6 weeks after surgery. Methods: Participants were recruited in 2006–2007 in a district general hospital in the south of England; those with a diagnosis of cancer or polyps were included in the analysis. Quality of life data were collected using EQ-5D, on alternate days after surgery for 4 weeks. Costs per patient, from a National Health Service perspective (in British pounds, 2006) comprised the sum of operative, hospital, and community costs. Missing data were filled using multiple imputation methods. The difference in mean quality adjusted life years and costs between surgery groups were estimated simultaneously using a multivariate regression model applied to 20 imputed datasets. The probability that laparoscopic surgery is cost-effective compared to open surgery for a given societal willingness-to-pay threshold is illustrated using a cost-effectiveness acceptability curve. Results: The sample comprised 68 laparoscopic and 27 open surgery patients. At 28 days, the incremental cost per quality adjusted life year gained from laparoscopic surgery was £12,375. At a societal willingness-to-pay of £30,000, the probability that laparoscopic surgery is cost-effective, exceeds 65% (at £20,000 ≈60%). In sensitivity analyses, laparoscopic surgery remained cost-effective compared to open surgery, provided it results in a saving ≥£699 in hospital bed days and takes no more than 8 minutes longer to perform. Conclusion: The study provides formal evidence of the cost-effectiveness of laparoscopic approaches and supports current guidelines that promote use of laparoscopy where suitably trained surgeons are available. This paper proposes a new on-site technique for the experimental characterization of small wind systems by emulating the behavior of a wind tunnel facility. Due to the high cost and complexity of these facilities, many manufacturers of small wind systems do not have a well knowledge of the characteristic λ - C p curve of their turbines. Therefore, power electronics converters connected to the wind generator are usually programmed with speed/power control curves that do not optimize the power generation. The characteristic λ - C p curves obtained through the proposed method will help manufacturers to obtain optimized speed/power control curves. In addition, a low cost small wind emulator has been designed. Programmed with the experimental λ - C p curve, it can validate, improve, and develop new control algorithms to maximize the energy generation. The emulator is completed with a new graphic user interface that monitors in real time both the value of the λ - C p coordinate and the operating point on the 3D working surface generated with the characteristic λ - C p curve obtained from the real small wind system. The proposed method has been applied to a small wind turbine commercial model. The experimental results demonstrate that the point of operation obtained with the emulator is always located on the 3D surface, at the same coordinates (rotor speed/wind speed/power) as the ones obtained experimentally, validating the designed emulator.

Glioxal pode ser obtido a partir de biomassa (como da oxidação de lipídeos) e não é tóxico ou volátil, tendo sido por isso utilizado no presente trabalho como substituto de formaldeído na preparação de resina fenólica do tipo novolaca, sendo usado como catalisador o ácido oxálico, que também pode ser obtido de fontes renováveis. A resina glioxal-fenol foi utilizada na preparação de compósitos reforçados com celulose microcristalina (CM, 30, 50 e 70% em massa), uma celulose com elevada área superficial. As imagens de microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV) das superfícies fraturadas demonstraram que os compósitos apresentaram boa interface reforço/matriz, consequência da elevada área superficial da CM e presença de grupos polares (hidroxilas) tanto na matriz como na celulose, o que permitiu a formação de ligações hidrogênio, favorecendo a compatibilidade entre ambas. A análise térmica dinâmico-mecânica (DMTA) demonstrou que todos os compósitos apresentaram elevado módulo de armazenamento à temperatura ambiente. Além disso, o compósito reforçado com 30% de CM apresentou baixa absorção de água, comparável à do termorrígido fenólico, que é utilizado em escala industrial. Os resultados demonstraram que compósitos com boas propriedades podem ser preparados usando elevada proporção de materiais obtidos de biomassa.Glyoxal, which can be obtained from biomass (as by lipids oxidation), is non-toxic and non-volatile. It was used as a substitute of formaldehyde, which does not have these properties, in the synthesis of a novolac-type phenolic resin, using oxalic acid as a catalyst, which can also be obtained from renewable sources. The glyoxal-phenol resin was used in the preparation of composites reinforced with microcrystalline cellulose (MCC 30, 50, and 70% w/w). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of the fractured surfaces showed that the composites presented a good reinforcement/matrix interface. This can be attributed to the high surface area of the MCC and also to the presence of polar groups (hydroxyl) in both cellulose and matrix, which allowed the formation of hydrogen bonds, leading to a good adhesion between the components present at the interface. Dynamic mechanical thermoanalysis (DMTA) showed that all of the obtained composites have high storage modulus at room temperature. Moreover, the composite reinforced with 30% of MCC showed the lowest water absorption, almost the same as that of the phenolic thermoset, which is used in industrial applications. The results showed that composites with good properties can be prepared using high proportions of materials obtained from biomass.

A brief summary of selected pioneering and mechanistic contributions in the field of carbon-carbon cross-coupling reactions with palladium nanoparticles (Pd-NPs) in ionic liquids (ILs) is presented. Five exemplary model systems using the Pd-NPs/ILs approach are presented: Heck, Suzuki, Stille, Sonogashira and Ullmann reactions which all have in common the use of ionic liquids as reaction media and the use of palladium nanoparticles as reservoir for the catalytically active palladium species.

The ranges and abundances of species that depend on freshwater habitats are declining worldwide. Efforts to counteract those trends are often hampered by a lack of information about species distribution and conservation status and are often strongly biased toward a few well-studied groups. We identified the 3,906 vascular plants, macroinvertebrates, and vertebrates native to California, USA, that depend on fresh water for at least one stage of their life history. We evaluated the conservation status for these taxa using existing government and non-governmental organization assessments (e.g., endangered species act, NatureServe), created a spatial database of locality observations or distribution information from ~400 data sources, and mapped patterns of richness, endemism, and vulnerability. Although nearly half of all taxa with conservation status (n = 1,939) are vulnerable to extinction, only 114 (6%) of those vulnerable taxa have a legal mandate for protection in the form of formal inclusion on a state or federal endangered species list. Endemic taxa are at greater risk than non-endemics, with 90% of the 927 endemic taxa vulnerable to extinction. Records with spatial data were available for a total of 2,276 species (61%). The patterns of species richness differ depending on the taxonomic group analyzed, but are similar across taxonomic level. No particular taxonomic group represents an umbrella for all species, but hotspots of high richness for listed species cover 40% of the hotspots for all other species and 58% of the hotspots for vulnerable freshwater species. By mapping freshwater species hotspots we show locations that represent the top priority for conservation action in the state. This study identifies opportunities to fill gaps in the evaluation of conservation status for freshwater taxa in California, to address the lack of occurrence information for nearly 40% of freshwater taxa and nearly 40% of watersheds in the state, and to implement adequate protections for freshwater taxa where they are currently lacking.

Live-attenuated strains of simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) routinely confer apparent sterilizing immunity against pathogenic SIV challenge in rhesus macaques. Understanding the mechanisms of protection by live-attenuated SIV may provide important insights into the immune responses needed for protection against HIV-1. Here we investigated the development of antibodies that are functional against neutralization-resistant SIV challenge strains, and tested the hypothesis that these antibodies are associated with protection. In the absence of detectable neutralizing antibodies, Env-specific antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity (ADCC) emerged by three weeks after inoculation with SIVΔnef, increased progressively over time, and was proportional to SIVΔnef replication. Persistent infection with SIVΔnef elicited significantly higher ADCC titers than immunization with a non-persistent SIV strain that is limited to a single cycle of infection. ADCC titers were higher against viruses matched to the vaccine strain in Env, but were measurable against viruses expressing heterologous Env proteins. In two separate experiments, which took advantage of either the strain-specificity or the time-dependent maturation of immunity to overcome complete protection against SIV(mac)251 challenge, measures of ADCC activity were higher among the SIVΔnef-inoculated macaques that remained uninfected than among those that became infected. These observations show that features of the antibody response elicited by SIVΔnef are consistent with hallmarks of protection by live-attenuated SIV, and reveal an association between Env-specific antibodies that direct ADCC and apparent sterilizing protection by SIVΔnef.

Understanding the interactions among agricultural processes, soil, and plants is necessary for optimizing crop yield and productivity. This study focuses on developing effective monitoring and analysis methodologies that estimate key soil and plant properties. These methodologies include data acquisition and processing approaches that use unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and surface geophysical techniques. In particular, we applied these approaches to a soybean farm in Arkansas to characterize the soil-plant coupled spatial and temporal heterogeneity, as well as to identify key environmental factors that influence plant growth and yield. UAV-based multitemporal acquisition of high-resolution RGB (red-green-blue) imagery and direct measurements were used to monitor plant height and photosynthetic activity. We present an algorithm that efficiently exploits the high-resolution UAV images to estimate plant spatial abundance and plant vigor throughout the growing season. Such plant characterization is extremely important for the identification of anomalous areas, providing easily interpretable information that can be used to guide near-real-time farming decisions. Additionally, high-resolution multitemporal surface geophysical measurements of apparent soil electrical conductivity were used to estimate the spatial heterogeneity of soil texture. By integrating the multiscale multitype soil and plant datasets, we identified the spatiotemporal co-variance between soil properties and plant development and yield. Our novel approach for early season monitoring of plant spatial abundance identified areas of low productivity controlled by soil clay content, while temporal analysis of geophysical data showed the impact of soil moisture and irrigation practice (controlled by topography) on plant dynamics. Our study demonstrates the effective coupling of UAV data products with geophysical data to extract critical information for farm management.

This article describes the design and initial implementation of a multidisciplinary, integrative learning course on the art and science of virtual worlds. The course combines complementary disciplines -- Computing, Physics, and Narrative Art -- in a single general education course for first-year students. The course attempts to incorporate narrative design elements with the scientific considerations and technological tools necessary to create immersive environments. The intended outcome of this course is for students to have an engaging, team-based, interdisciplinary learning experience which will allow them to build their integrative learning skills. The initial offering of the course did not go as planned but provided insight into future course revisions (e.g. more emphasis on coding skills, a shift in technologies used) which may enable the course to better achieve its intended goals.
