Abstract

Improving energy efficiency in the building sector is a subject of significant interest, considering the environmental impact of buildings. Energy efficiency involves many aspects, such as occupant comfort, system monitoring and maintenance, data treatment, instrumentation… Physical modeling and calibration, or artificial intelligence, are often employed to explore these different subjects and, thus, to limit energy consumption in buildings. Even though these techniques are well-suited, they have one thing in common, i.e., the need for user cases. This is why we propose to share a part of the large volume of data collected on our modular education building. The building is located on Nanterreʼs CESI Engineering school campus and welcomes approximately 80 students daily. A network of more than 150 sensors and actuators allows monitoring of the physical behavior of the entire building, preserving optimal comfort and energy consumption. The dataset includes the indoor physical parameters and the operating conditions of each system to describe the physical behavior of the building during a year.

Abstract

International audience; Metal powder bed fusion techniques can be used to build parts with complex internal and external geometries.Process parameters are optimized in order to obtain parts with low surface roughness and porosity, while maintaining a high productivity rate. The goal of this work is to quantify the sensitivity to internal and surface defects on the fatigue endurance of additively manufactured metallic parts. 316L Stainless Steel samples were fabricated through powder bed fusion using identical contour parameters, but three different hatching strategies were applied by varying the scanning speeds in the internal portions of the parts. Samples were subsequently mirror-polished to smooth the rough as-built surface. X-ray computed tomography analysis revealed several defect populations in samples from all three parametric sets due to lack of fusion in the bulk, with a nearly fully dense external “shell”. High cycle fatigue tests at R=0.1 were then performed on the specimens and combined with the X-ray computed tomography scans, helping to identify the largest and the critical defect size at which crack initiation occurred. Most fatigue failures initiated within the external contour zone for small (< 100 μm) defects, even when larger (> 200 μm) lack of fusion defects were widely present below the surface. It was determined that the high porosity (1% in volume or above 5% in area at some fabricated layers) observed in the bulk of parts manufactured with high scanning speeds had little impact on the fatigue limit of the material.

Abstract

International audience; In this study, 316L parts were fabricated with the selective laser melting additive layer manufacturing process using unidirectional laser scan to control their texture. The melt pool shape, microstructure and texture of three different cubic samples were analyzed and quantified using optical microscopy and electron back-scattered diffraction. The samples scanned along the shielding gas flow direction were shown to exhibit shallow conduction melt pools together with a strong {110} Goss texture along the laser scanning direction. The sample prepared with a laser scan perpendicular to the gas flow direction had deeper melt pools, with a weaker {110} Goss texture in addition to a fiber texture parallel to the scanning direction. Correlations were proposed between the melt-pool geometry and overlap and the resulting texture. The decrease of the melt pool depth was assumed to be linked to local attenuation of the laser beam effective power density transmitted to the powder bed.

Abstract

International audience; The quality control of additive manufacturing (AM) parts and the repeatability of AM process are critical issues for the widespread of AM especially for aerospace and healthcare sectors. Due to production costs, there is a strong interest in reducing scrap rates and process monitoring. Laser ultrasonics is a promising technology that fits the constraints of AM online monitoring. This technique shows potential for inspecting the upper cord of the part during manufacturing, as it is a non-contact and nondestructive testing. The generation is produced by a brief laser impulse which heats up the material, inducing constraints that release into ultrasonic waves. Two generation modes can be encountered using lasers: thermoelastic and ablative, depending on the energy deposited on the surface. The generated waves interact with the medium and flaws, thus allowing the detection of defects such as lack of fusion or porosities. The detection is performed using a two-wave mixing interferometer, also contactless. In this paper, we present work carried out in order to evaluate the feasibility and the effectiveness of laser ultrasonics testing for online additive manufacturing process. The influence of key parameters such as laser spot dimensions is highlighted through both experiment and modeling. We present first results obtained on additive manufactured parts containing machined notches.

Abstract

We report here on the energetics and kinetic processes of bonding interface defect formation, growth and dissolution for the standard silicon hydrophilic bonding case. We consider here silicon to silicon oxide bonding, i.e. native oxide against thermal oxide bonding. Water reaction with silicon upon annealing produces hydrogen which has to be managed in the interfacial zone and in the neighboring oxides. Defects are created when hydrogen gas pressure exceeds the interface strength [1,2]. Hence the capability of the oxide to absorb hydrogen, i.e. oxide thickness, temperature dependent solubility and the chemical form of hydrogen in the oxide are key factors which will be discussed (Fig.1).

6. Development of microcracks in hydrogen-implanted silicon substrates

Abstract

The development of microcracks in hydrogen-implanted silicon has been studied up to the final split using optical microscopy and mass spectroscopy. It is shown that the amount of gas released when splitting the material is proportional to the surface area of microcracks. This observation is interpreted as a signature of a vertical collection of the available gas. The development of microcracks is modeled taking into account both diffusion and mechanical crack propagation. The model reproduces many experimental observations such as the dependence of split time upon temperature and implanted dose.

Abstract

Hydrogen implanted silicon has been studied using high resolution X-ray scattering. Strain induced by implantation has been measured as a function of implantation dose. The dependence of strain with implanted dose shows different regimes starting from linear to quadratic and saturation. The observed strain is consistent with ab-initio and elasticity calculations. Strain rate changes can be associated to the predominant location of hydrogen in bond center location.

Abstract

Interface defects formed during the wafer bonding process upon annealing have been studied. Based on the hydrogen diffusion in SiO2 and the stability of the bubbles at the bonding interface, models of the growth and further dissolution of the defects are presented. Considering the hydrogen diffusion through the interfacial oxide, diffusion coefficients and activation energy (Ea=0.25 eV) are obtained. It has been shown that the defect dissolution is driven by the exodiffusion of the hydrogen toward the silicon substrates.

Internationale.; International audience; Le silicium obtenu par croissance cristalline de lingots massifs est la matière la plus utilisée dans l'industrie du photovoltaïque (PV). Outre les contraintes thermiques apparaissant durant la croissance, les techniques de mise en forme des lingots en substrats induisent des contraintes résiduelles faibles mais néfastes lors de la fabrication des cellules solaires. Le but de l'étude est de caractériser ces contraintes résiduelles afin d'améliorer le procédé de fabrication des substrats. La photoélasticimétrie infrarouge apparaît comme une méthode puissante pour la mesure de ces champs de contraintes faibles (quelques MPa) de façon non-destructive, sans contact et in-situ à l'échelle du substrat. Un banc de mesure a été mis en place afin de mener à bien l'étude. Les origines des contraintes résiduelles ont été dissociées et différents procédés de découpes ont été comparés.
