In this study, the authors propose a model, called the Daily Downward Shortwave Radiation Random Forest Model over Rugged Terrain (DSRMT), to accurately calculate the downward shortwave radiation over a terrain without bright surface on clear days at a daily scale (DSRdaily−rugged). It was built by using the random forest method based on the comprehensive samples from CERES4_SYN1deg_Ed4A within 17 typical mountainous regions. DSRMT could directly estimate DSRdaily-rugged from the instantaneous direct and diffuse solar radiation on a flat surface during 10:30–14:30hrs on each day by comparing with the terrain factors from a digital elevation model, broadband albedo from the Global Land Surface Satellite, and ancillary information. The in-situ validation results showed that it generally delivered superior performance in estimating DSRdaily-rugged at any time during 10:30–14:30hrs, especially at noon, yielding a validated root mean-squared error (RMSE) of 24.90–29.22 Wm−2 and mean absolute error (MAE) of 19.16–22.94 Wm−2, and the average weighted DSRdaily-rugged were usually more accurate with the RMSE and MAE of 21.63 and 17.14 Wm−2. Overall, DSRMT was found to deliver satisfactory performance because of its high accuracy, robustness, ease of implementation, and efficiency, so it has the strong potential to be widely used in practice.

Land surface all-wave net radiation (Rn) is crucial in determining Earth's climate by contributing to the surface radiation budget. This study evaluated seven satellite and three reanalysis long-term land surface Rn products under different spatial scales, spatial and temporal variations, and different conditions. The results showed that during 2000-2018, Global Land Surface Satellite Product (GLASS)-Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) performed the best (RMSE=25.54 Wm-2, bias=−1.26 Wm-2), followed by ERA5 (the fifth-generation of European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecast Reanalysis) (RMSE=32.17 Wm-2, bias=−4.88 Wm-2) and GLASS-AVHRR (Advanced Very-High-Resolution Radiometer) (RMSE=33.10 Wm-2, bias=4.03 Wm-2). During 1983-2018, GLASS-AVHRR and ERA5 ranked top and performed similarly, with RMSE values of 31.70 and 33.08 Wm-2 and biases of −4.56 and 3.48 Wm-2, respectively. The averaged multi-annual mean Rn over the global land surface of satellite products was higher than that of reanalysis products by about 10∼30 Wm-2. These products differed remarkably in long-term trends variations, particularly pre-2000, but no significant trends were observed. Discrepancies were more frequent in satellite data, while reanalysis products showed smoother variations. Large discrepancies were found in regions with high latitudes, reflectance, and elevation which could be attributed to input radiative components, meteorological variables (e.g., cloud properties, aerosol optical thickness), and applicability of the algorithms used. While further research is needed for detailed insights.

The all-wave net radiation (Rn) at the land surface represents surface radiation budget and plays an important role in the Earth's energy and water cycles. Many studies have been conducted to estimate from satellite top-of-atmosphere (TOA) data using various methods, particularly the application of machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL). However, few studies have been conducted to provide a comprehensive evaluation about various ML and DL methods in retrieving. Based on extensive in situ measurements distributed at mid-low latitudes, the corresponding Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) TOA observations, and the daily from the fifth generation of European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts Reanalysis 5 (ERA5) used as a priori knowledge, this study assessed nine models for daily estimation, including six classic ML methods (random forest -RF, adaptive boosting - Adaboost, extreme gradient boosting -XGBoost, multilayer perceptron -MLP, radial basis function neural network -RBF, and support vector machine -SVM) and three DL methods (multilayer perceptron neural network with stacked autoencoders -SAE, deep belief network -DBN and residual neural network -ResNet). The validation results showed that the three DL methods were generally better than the six ML methods except XGBoost, although they all performed poorly in certain conditions such as winter days, rugged terrain, and high elevation. ResNet had the most robust performance across different land cover types, elevations, seasons, and latitude zones, but it has disadvantages in practice because of its highly configurable implementation environment and low computational efficiency. The estimated daily values from all nine models were more accurate than the corresponding Global LAnd Surface Satellite (GLASS) product.

The surface net radiation (Rn) represents the balance of the radiative budget on the land surface and drives many physical and biological processes. An accurate and long-term product for global daily coverage of Rn at a high spatial resolution is needed for a variety of applications at regional and local scales. This study proposes two algorithms, called the downward shortwave radiation (DSR)-based algorithm and the top-of-atmosphere (TOA)-based algorithm, to estimate Rn by using Landsat data. The DSR-based algorithm consists of three conditional models, and was developed based on the analysis of the relationship between Rn and shortwave radiation as well as ancillary information from ground measurements and various datasets. The TOA-based algorithm was developed by linking Rn to TOA observations from Landsat sensors and ancillary information. The two algorithms were developed by using the random forest method. The results of their validation against ground measurements showed that the DSR-based algorithm outperformed the TOA-based algorithm in terms of accuracy, with a determination coefficient (R2) of 0.93, root-mean-squared error (RMSE) of 17.58 Wm−2, and bias of −4.27 Wm−2. It was stable under various conditions. We then applied the DSR-based algorithm to generate a product of the global daily Rn, called the High-resolution (Hi)- Global LAnd Surface Satellite (GLASS), from 2013 to 2018 at a spatial resolution of 30 m under a clear sky based on remotely sensed products, including the DSR from GLASS, the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) obtained from Landsat, surface broadband albedo from Hi-GLASS, and meteorological factors based on reanalysis data from MERRA2. Following its validation using in-situ observations from 2013 to 2018, the overall accuracy of the daily Rn acquired by Hi-GLASS under clear sky was found to be satisfactory, with a value of R2 of 0.90 and an RMSE of 25.03 Wm−2. Moreover, compared with the daily Rn obtained from the GLASS product at a spatial resolution of 5 km, that obtained by Hi-GLASS can better characterize the surface by providing more details and capturing the variations in the measurements, especially large and small values. However, due to limitations of the available datasets and the algorithm, the data on Rn for most regions lacked information on cloudy skies and areas at high latitudes. This information thus cannot be provided by Hi-GLASS yet. Moreover, the influence of the topography on values of Rn has not been thoroughly considered. Nonetheless, values of Rn under clear sky obtained from Hi-GLASS offer promise for use in a wide range of areas, and efforts are underway to improve this product.

The surface all-wave net radiation (Rn) plays an important role in the energy and water cycles, and most studies of Rn estimations have been conducted using satellite data. As one of the most commonly used satellite data sets, Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data have not been widely used for radiation calculations at mid-low latitudes because of its very low revisit frequency. To improve the daily Rn estimation at mid-low latitudes with MODIS data, four models, including three models built with random forest (RF) and different temporal expansion models and one model built with the look-up-table (LUT) method, are used based on comprehensive in situ radiation measurements collected from 340 globally distributed sites, MODIS top-of-atmosphere (TOA) data, and the fifth generation of European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts Reanalysis 5 (ERA5) data from 2000 to 2017. After validation against the in situ measurements, it was found that the RF model based on the constraint of the daily Rn from ERA5 (an RF-based model with ERA5) performed the best among the four proposed models, with an overall validated root-mean-square error (RMSE) of 21.83 Wm−2, R2 of 0.89, and a bias of 0.2 Wm−2. It also had the best accuracy compared to four existing products (Global LAnd Surface Satellite Data (GLASS), Clouds and the Earth’s Radiant Energy System Edition 4A (CERES4A), ERA5, and FLUXCOM_RS) across various land cover types and different elevation zones. Further analyses illustrated the effectiveness of the model by introducing the daily Rn from ERA5 into a “black box” RF-based model for Rn estimation at the daily scale, which is used as a physical constraint when the available satellite observations are too limited to provide sufficient information (i.e., when the overpass time is less than twice per day) or the sky is overcast. Overall, the newly-proposed RF-based model with ERA5 in this study shows satisfactory performance and has strong potential to be used for long-term accurate daily Rn global mapping at finer spatial resolutions (e.g., 1 km) at mid-low latitudes.

Ocean surface net radiation (Rn) is significant in research on the Earth’s heat balance systems, air–sea interactions, and other applications. However, there have been few studies on Rn until now. Based on radiative and meteorological measurements collected from 66 globally distributed moored buoys, it was found that Rn was dominated by downward shortwave radiation (Rg↓) when the length ratio of daytime (LRD) was greater than 0.4 but dominated by downward longwave radiation (Rl↓) for the other cases (LRD ≤ 0.4). Therefore, an empirical scheme that includes two conditional models named Case 1 (LRD > 0.4) utilizing Rg↓ as a major input and Case 2 (LRD ≤ 0.4) utilizing Rl↓ as a major input for Rn estimation was successfully developed. After validation against in situ Rn, the performance of the empirical scheme was satisfactory with an overall R2 value of 0.972, an RMSE of 9.768 Wm−2, and a bias of −0.092 Wm−2. Specifically, the accuracies of the two conditional models were also very good, with RMSEs of 9.805 and 2.824 Wm−2 and biases of −0.095 and 0.346 Wm−2 for the Case 1 and Case 2 models, respectively. However, due to the limited number of available samples, the performances of these new models were poor in coastal and high-latitude areas, and the models did not work when the LRD was too small (i.e., LRD < 0.3). Overall, the newly developed empirical scheme for Rn estimation has strong potential to be widely used in practical use because of its simple format and high accuracy.

Recently, there has been considerable interest in developing novel energy-saving vehicles that use flapping foils propulsion systems inspired by biology. Facing increasingly complex application tasks, the coordination of multiple vehicles will be a hot issue in the future this research field. We are inspired by changes in configurations of biological collective behavior (known as schooling) in nature, focused on studying transient effects during transitions of three-dimensional bio-inspired flapping foils between two different bionic schooling configurations. Numerical simulations employing the immersed boundary-lattice Boltzmann method (IB-LBM) for unsteady hydrodynamics of flapping foils in schooling transitions were performed. Effects of different mutual transition modes between tandem and diamond schooling configurations on their thrust performance were investigated. Meanwhile, we present hydrodynamics of flapping foils in a schooling with different downstream flapping frequencies under the best transition mode. The results show that during transitions between two schooling configurations, there is an optimal energy-saving transition mode. It has nothing to do with the length of transition distance. Different downstream flapping frequencies will affect the interacting vortices between fluid and structure and then affect transient effects during schooling transition. Although the transition modes were specified, our research takes the transients effects of schooling transitions as an influencing factor to be considered for formations changes, which will provide a new idea for the design bio-inspired vehicle cluster formation. Mutant analyses in different eudicotyledonous flowering plants demonstrated that SEPALLATA-like MADS-box genes are required for the specification of sepals, petals, stamens and carpels, and for floral determinacy, thus defining class E floral organ identity genes. SEP-like genes encode MADS-domain transcription factors and constitute an angiosperm-specific gene clade whose members show remarkably different degrees of redundancy and sub-functionalization within eudicots. To better understand the evolutionary dynamics of SEP-like genes throughout the angiosperms we have knocked down SEP-like genes of rice ( Oryza sativa), a distant relative of eudicots within the flowering plants. Plants affected in both OsMADS7 and OsMADS8 show severe phenotypes including late flowering, homeotic changes of lodicules, stamens and carpels into palea/lemma-like organs, and a loss of floral determinacy. Simultaneous knockdown of the four rice SEP-like genes OsMADS1, OsMADS5, OsMADS7 and OsMADS8, leads to homeotic transformation of all floral organs except the lemma into leaf-like organs. This mimics the phenotype observed with the sep1 sep2 sep3 sep4 quadruple mutant of Arabidopsis. Detailed analyses of the spatial and temporal mRNA expression and protein interaction patterns corresponding to the different rice SEP-like genes show strong similarities, but also gene-specific differences. These findings reveal conservation of SEP-like genes in specifying floral determinacy and organ identities since the separation of eudicots and monocots about 150 million years ago. However, they indicate also monocot-specific neo- and sub-functionalization events and hence underscore the evolutionary dynamics of SEP-like genes.
