Abstract Seborrheic keratosis (SK) is a common skin disease in the elderly. However, in cases where SK presenting as multiple skin-colored or clustered lesions can be easily misdiagnosed as verruca plana (VP), especially in the young population. This retrospective study investigated the prevalence of SK and VP in the lesions that appear clinically similar to VP according to age. We examined the pathology slides of the skin tissue and photographs of patients who were clinically suspected to have VP. A total of 503 patients were included in the study, out of which 174 patients were finally diagnosed with SK (34.6%) and 132 with VP (26.2%). The mean ages of the SK- and VP-diagnosed group were 39.3 and 35.4 years, respectively. SK had a higher prevalence among individuals older than 30 years, and relative frequency of SK should not be ignored in patients with a grouped distribution in their 20 s and 30 s. Therefore, our study suggests that multiple verrucous skin-colored to brownish plaques are also commonly diagnosed as SK in young people as well as VP, and the prevalence of SK and VP may not always depend solely on chronological aging, and the prevalence of SK among young people may be higher than commonly believed stereotypes suggest.

Abstract Melasma relapse is almost common after discontinuation of conventional treatment. Recent studies suggesting that photoaging dermis is the main pathomechanism of melasma, emphasize the dermal targeting therapy. We investigated maintenance effect of microneedling radiofrequency (RF) for melasma treatment. Subjects with melasma were administered oral tranexamic acid and triple combination cream for 2 months and a randomly assigned half face was treated with RF. After discontinuation of conventional therapy, the half face RF continued monthly over 6 months. Modified melasma area severity index (mMASI) score and L* value by a chromameter were collected monthly. Fifteen subjects were enrolled and eleven completed the 8-month study. At 2nd month of conventional therapy, all subjects showed improvement with a 64% reduction in mMASI score. With continuous RF treatment, the improvement was well maintained; whereas in untreated side, the Δ L* gradually decreased, returning to the baseline after the conventional therapy ended. The continuous microneedling RF therapy is beneficial in maintaining the conventional therapy of melasma suggesting the protective effect of dermal targeting therapy in melasma development. Abstract The biological process of aging is thought to result in part from accumulation of senescent cells in organs. However, the present study identified a subset of fibroblasts and smooth muscle cells which are the major constituents of organ stroma neither proliferative nor senescent in tissues of the elderly, which we termed “mid-old status” cells. Upregulation of pro-inflammatory genes (IL1B and SAA1) and downregulation of anti-inflammatory genes (SLIT2 and CXCL12) were detected in mid-old cells. In the stroma, SAA1 promotes development of the inflammatory microenvironment via upregulation of MMP9, which decreases the stability of epithelial cells present on the basement membrane, decreasing epithelial cell function. Remarkably, the microenvironmental change and the functional decline of mid-old cells could be reversed by a young cell-originated protein, SLIT2. Our data identify functional reversion of mid-old cells as a potential method to prevent or ameliorate aspects of aging-related tissue dysfunction.

Abstract Acral lentiginous melanoma (ALM) is the most common subtype of cutaneous melanoma among Asians; punch biopsy is widely performed for its diagnosis. However, the pathologic parameters evaluated via punch biopsy may not be sufficient for predicting disease prognosis compared to the parameters evaluated via excisional biopsy. We investigated whether changes in Breslow thickness (BT) between initial punch biopsy results and final pathology reports can affect the prognosis of ALM. Pathologic parameters were recorded from specimens acquired through the initial punch biopsy and wide excision. Patients were classified into two groups based on a change in Breslow depth: the BT increased or decreased on comparing the samples from the initial punch biopsy and final wide excision. We compared clinical characteristics, and a Cox regression model was used to identify independent prognostic factors influencing melanoma-specific death (MSD). Changes in BT did not affect MSD (hazard ratio [HR]: 0.55, P = 0.447). In multivariate analysis, a higher BT (> 2 mm) (HR: 9.93, P = 0.046) and nodal metastasis (HR: 5.66, P = 0.041) were significantly associated with an increased MSD risk. The use of punch biopsy did not affect MSD despite the inaccuracy of BT measurement as long as ALM was accurately diagnosed.

Itching is a sensory phenomenon characterized by an unpleasant sensation that makes you want to scratch the skin, and chronic itching diminishes the quality of life. In recent studies, multiple transient receptor potential (TRP) channels present in keratinocytes or nerve endings have been shown to engage in the propagation of itch signals in chronic dermatological or pruritic conditions, such as atopic dermatitis (AD) and psoriasis (PS). TRPV3, a member of the TRP family, is highly expressed in the epidermal keratinocytes. Normal TRPV3 signaling is essential for maintaining epidermal barrier homeostasis. In recent decades, many studies have suggested that TRPV3 contributes to detecting pruritus signals. Gain-of-function mutations in TRPV3 in mice and humans are characterized by severe itching, hyperkeratosis, and elevated total IgE levels. These studies suggest that TRPV3 is an important channel for skin itching. Preclinical studies have provided evidence to support the development of TRPV3 antagonists for treating inflammatory skin conditions, itchiness, and pain. This review explores the role of TRPV3 in chronic pruritus, collating clinical and experimental evidence. We also discuss underlying cellular and molecular mechanisms and explore the potential of TRPV3 antagonists as therapeutic agents.

Carvacrol, a natural transient receptor potential vanilloid-3 activator, has been reported to cause pruritus in mice. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of carvacrol and various antipruritic agents in humans. A stimulation test with carvacrol, β-alanine, and histamine was performed. After application of the pruritic solutions, the skin was stimulated with pinpricks. In inhibition test A, Forsythia suspensa extract, containing forsythoside B (a transient receptor potential vanilloid-3 inhibitor), was applied by pricking prior to stimulation with pruritogens. In inhibition test B, olopatadine solution, tacrolimus ointment, and Scutellaria baicalensis root extract were applied, and carvacrol was applied to the same region. Carvacrol induces moderate pruritus in humans. The pruritus was relieved by Forsythia suspensa extract and olopatadine solution after 20 min of application and by tacrolimus ointment and Scutellaria baicalenis extract after 24 h of application. These results suggest that carvacrol is a pruritogen in humans, and that carvacrol-induced pruritus is inhibited by various antipruritic agents.

Skin aging is induced and sustained by chronological aging and photoaging. Aging skin pigmentation such as mottled pigmentation (senile lentigo) and melasma are typical signs of photoaging. The skin, like other human organs, undergoes cellular senescence, and senescent cells in the skin increase with age. The crosstalk between melanocytes as pigmentary cells and other adjacent types of aged skin cells such as senescent fibroblasts play a role in skin-aging pigmentation. In this review, we provide an overview of cellular senescence during the skin-aging process. The discussion also includes cellular senescence related to skin-aging pigmentation and the therapeutic potential of regulating the senescence process.

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory systemic disease primarily affecting the skin, but which often involves considerable comorbidities as well. One-third of psoriasis cases start during childhood. In pediatric psoriasis, an association with several medical comorbidities is also indicated. Furthermore, because of its chronic nature and frequent relapses, psoriatic patients tend to require long-term treatment and experience negative impacts on their quality of life. Considering the different clinical characteristics of pediatric psoriasis, it has recently been presented that the pathogenesis of pediatric psoriasis is distinct from adult psoriasis. Treatment for pediatric psoriasis usually involves the same methods as for adults. However, most treatments in pediatric psoriasis are used off-label and research in this regard is still lacking. Targeted therapies involving newly developed biologics are also increasingly being applied to psoriasis in children. This review summarizes the clinical characteristics of pediatric psoriasis and focuses mainly on the updated concepts of pathogenesis and treatments in pediatric psoriasis. This was undertaken to widen the understanding of these relevant aspects and to provide better management of pediatric psoriasis by clinicians.

The human microbiome plays an important role in various diseases, including Behçet’s disease (BD). However, the effects of disease activity and covariates influencing the microbial composition have not yet been investigated. Therefore, we investigated the fecal and salivary microbiomes of BD patients compared to those of recurrent aphthous ulcer (RAU) patients, as well as dietary habit-matched healthy controls (HCs) selected from immediate family members using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The fecal microbiome alpha diversity of BD patients was not different from that of their matched HCs, although it was higher than that of unrelated HCs and decreased in BD patients with disease activity. A tendency toward clustering in the beta diversity of the fecal microbiome was observed between the active BD patients and their matched HCs. Active BD patients had a significantly higher abundance of fecal Bacteroides uniformis than their matched HCs and patients with the disease in an inactive state (p = 0.038). The abundance of salivary Rothia mucilaginosa group was higher in BD patients than in RAUs patients. BD patients with uveitis had different abundances of various taxa, compared to those without uveitis. Our results showed an association of fecal microbiome composition with BD disease activity and symptoms, suggesting the possible role of the gut microbiome in BD pathogenesis.

Recently, the mTOR signaling has emerged as an important player in the pathogenesis of psoriasis. We previously found that 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD)-induced psoriatic skin inflammation was related to the inhibition of autophagy in keratinocytes. However, the effects and detailed molecular mechanisms of the mTOR inhibitor rapamycin and TCDD on psoriasis in vivo remain to be elucidated. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the effects of rapamycin and TCDD on skin lesions in imiquimod (IMQ)-induced psoriasis using a mouse model. TCDD aggravated skin inflammation in an IMQ-induced psoriatic mouse model. Furthermore, TCDD increased the expression of aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR), CYP1A1, proinflammatory cytokines, oxidative stress markers (NADPH oxidase (Nox) 2, Nox4), and phosphorylated P65NF-ĸB, whereas the expression of autophagy-related factors and the antioxidant marker nuclear factor-erythroid 2-related factor 2 (NRF2) decreased. Rapamycin reduced the aggravated skin inflammation induced by TCDD and restored TCDD-induced autophagy suppression and the increase of AHR expression, oxidative stress, and inflammatory response in the skin lesions of a psoriatic mouse model. In conclusion, we demonstrated that rapamycin alleviates TCDD-induced aggravated dermatitis in mice with imiquimod-induced psoriasis-like dermatitis through AHR and autophagy modulation.

Background and Objective: Little is known about the anti-pigmentation effects of whitening agents on solar lentigines. Epidermal growth factor (EGF) has been used as a booster for wound healing in the skin, and it has been suggested to have anti-pigmentation effects. This study aimed to evaluate the effect and safety of EGF-containing ointment for treating solar lentigines with a Q-switched (QS) 532 nm neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG) laser (Bluecore company, Seoul, Republic of Korea). Materials and Methods: Subjects who underwent QS 532 nm Nd:YAG laser treatment of solar lentigines were randomly assigned to treatment with an EGF ointment or petrolatum. After the laser procedure, the subjects were administered the test ointment twice a day for 4 weeks. The physician’s assessment of the degree of pigment clearance and patient’s satisfaction were assessed after 4 and 8 weeks. Additionally, the melanin index (MI), erythema index (EI), transepidermal water loss (TEWL), and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) were evaluated. This trial was registered with ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT04704245). Results: The blinded physician’s assessment using 5-grade percentage improvement scale and patient’s satisfaction were significantly higher in the study group than in the control group at the 4th and 8th weeks. The MI was significantly higher in the control group than in the study group at the 4th and 8th weeks. The EI and TEWL did not differ significantly between the two groups at either time point. The incidence of PIH was higher in the control group (37.5%) than in the EGF group (7.14%) at the 8th week. Conclusions: The application of EGF-containing ointment on facial solar lentigines with a QS 532 nm Nd:YAG laser showed efficient and safe therapeutic effects, with less PIH. Thus, EGF-containing ointment could be suggested as the promising adjuvant treatment strategy with a QS laser for solar lentigines.

Background: Anaphylaxis is an allergic disease that requires special handling due to its potential fatality. Recent epidemiological data indicate that the incidence of anaphylaxis is rising. However, actual data on the prevalence or causes of anaphylaxis in Korea are limited. Methods: The emergency room attendees diagnosed with anaphylaxis between 2011 and 2015 in five university hospitals were included. Medical records were reviewed retrospectively. Results: During the 5 years, a total of 505 subjects were diagnosed with anaphylaxis. Respiratory presentations were more common in children than in adults, while adults presented more frequently with cardiovascular symptoms. Intraoral angioedema was more often observed in the countryside than in the city. Insect stings/bites were more common in the countryside than in the city. Drugs were much more common in adults than in children. In the countryside, the frequency of anaphylaxis was higher in summer and autumn than in spring and winter. The use of corticosteroids was less common in children than in adults, while children more frequently got treatment with inhaled beta 2 agonist. Conclusions: The principal causes of anaphylaxis in Korean patients were food, drugs, and stings/bites. The cause, clinical features and management of anaphylaxis were significantly different depending on age and region. These real-world data on anaphylaxis could be helpful to deepen that understanding of this condition for physicians and patients.

Pruritus is a relatively common symptom that anyone can experience at any point in their life and is more common in the elderly. Pruritus in elderly can be defined as chronic pruritus in a person over 65 years old. The pathophysiology of pruritus in elderly is still unclear, and the quality of life is reduced. Generally, itch can be clinically classified into six types: Itch caused by systemic diseases, itch caused by skin diseases, neuropathic pruritus, psychogenic pruritus, pruritus with multiple factors, and from unknown causes. Senile pruritus can be defined as a chronic pruritus of unknown origin in elderly people. Various neuronal mediators, signaling mechanisms at neuronal terminals, central and peripheral neurotransmission pathways, and neuronal sensitizations are included in the processes causing itch. A variety of therapies are used and several novel drugs are being developed to relieve itch, including systemic and topical treatments.

Background: prurigo is a chronic skin disorder associated with a history of chronic pruritus. The pathogenesis of prurigo is largely unknown and the treatment of prurigo is unsatisfactory and challenging. Conventional systemic treatments may be beneficial; however, their possible side effects and possible transient efficacy is still a problem. We aimed to present the clinical course and effect of treatment with alitretinoin on patients with prurigo nodularis initially treated with conventional treatments like oral antihistamine, cyclosporine, and phototherapy. Methods: all the patients had prurigo nodularis refractory to conventional treatment. Their medical records included demographic features, past medical history, duration of disease, and treatment modalities; and the clinical courses of the patients were reviewed for this retrospective study. We evaluated patient pruritus and skin lesions for the duration. Results: we present reports involving 10 patients with refractory prurigo. All the patients in our cases were treated with oral alitretinoin after previous treatments and reported the improvement of skin lesions and pruritus within 2 weeks to 3 months. Conclusions: we suggest that oral alitretinoin may be an effective and well tolerated treatment option for patients with intractable prurigo. Further clinical studies are warranted to confirm the long-lasting efficacy and safety of alitretinoin for treating patients with prurigo.

This study developed a macro-sized polyamide (PA) fiber for concrete reinforcement and investigated the influence of the PA fiber on flexural responses in accordance with ASTM standards. PA fibers are advantageous compared to steel fibers that are corrosive and gravitated. The macro-sized PA fiber significantly improved concrete ductility and toughness. Unlike steel fibers, the PA fibers produced two peak bending strengths. The first-peaks occurred near 0.005 mm of deflection and decreased up to 0.5 mm of deflection. Then the bending strength increased up to second-peaks until the deflections reached between 1.0 and 1.5 mm. The averaged flexural responses revealed that PA fiber content did not significantly influence flexural responses before L/600, but had significant influence thereafter. Toughness performance levels were also determined, and the results indicated more than Level II at L/600 and Level IV at others.

Diagnosing fever in older patients is challenging because of atypical symptom presentation. Understanding which factors can predict an infection source on systemic computed tomography (CT) scans can improve patient outcomes by informing treatment decisions. This study aimed to investigate the predictive factors for identifying infection source using combined chest and abdominal CT in older febrile patients exhibiting no clear indications in the emergency department (ED). This was a single-center retrospective study that enrolled 169 acute febrile older patients without any clinical evidence of fever, who underwent systemic CT in the ED between January 2017 and June 2019. Fever in older patients was defined as tympanic temperature ≥37.2 °C or an increase in body temperature by ≥1.3 °C. Lack of clinical evidence of fever included an absence of suggestive findings in medical history, review of systems, physical examination or basic emergency diagnostic tests. CT results revealed 98 and 71 patients with negative and positive infection sources, respectively. Multivariate logistic regression analysis identified underlying diabetes mellitus (odds ratio (OR) = 2.667, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.209-5.883, p = 0.015) and malignancy (OR = 13.272, 95% CI: 2.590-67.990, p = 0.002), quick Sequential Organ Failure Assessment score of 2 or more (≥2 points) (OR = 6.687, 95% CI: 2.568-17.410, p < 0.001), and serum C-reactive protein greater than 5.15 mg/dL (>5.15 mg/dL) (OR = 9.773, 95% CI: 3.944-24.217, p < 0.001) as independent predictive factors for infection source in acute febrile older patients showing no clinical evidence in the ED. Physicians could consider recommending systemic CT scans when there is a high clinical benefit for acute febrile older patients who lack clear evidence of fever but have the predictive factors identified in this study. Fusarium head blight (FHB) is a destructive disease caused by several species of Fusarium, such as Fusarium graminearum and F. asiaticum. FHB affects cereal crops, including wheat, barley, and rice, worldwide. Fusarium-infected kernels not only cause reduced yields but also cause quality loss by producing mycotoxins, such as trichothecenes and zearalenone, which are toxic to animals and humans. For decades, chemical fungicides have been used to control FHB because of their convenience and high control efficacy. However, the prolonged use of chemical fungicides has caused adverse effects, including the emergence of drug resistance to pathogens and environmental pollution. Biological control is considered one of the most promising alternatives to chemicals and can be used for integrated management of FHB due to the rare possibility of environment pollution and reduced health risks. In this study, Bacillus velezensis JCK-7158 isolated from rice was selected as an ecofriendly alternative to chemical fungicides for the management of FHB. JCK-7158 produced the extracellular enzymes protease, chitinase, gelatinase, and cellulase; the plant growth hormone indole-3-acetic acid; and the 2,3-butanediol precursor acetoin. Moreover, JCK-7158 exhibited broad antagonistic activity against various phytopathogenic fungi and produced iturin A, surfactin, and volatile substances as active antifungal compounds. It also enhanced the expression of PR1, a known induced resistance marker gene, in transgenic Arabidopsis plants expressing ß-glucuronidase (GUS) fused with the PR1 promoter. Under greenhouse conditions, treatments with the culture broth and suspension concentrate formulation of JCK-7158 at a 1,000-fold dilution inhibited the development of FHB by 50 and 66%, respectively. In a field experiment, treatment with the suspension concentrate formulation of JCK-7158 at a 1,000-fold dilution effectively controlled the development of FHB with a control value of 55% and reduced the production of the mycotoxin nivalenol by 40%. Interestingly, treatment with JCK-7158 enhanced the expression of plant defense-related genes in salicylic acid, jasmonic acid, ethylene, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) signaling pathways before and after FHB pathogen inoculation. Bacterial wilt caused by Ralstonia solanacearum is a fatal disease that affects the production of tomatoes and many other crops worldwide. As an effective strategy to manage bacterial wilt, biological control agents using plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) are being developed. In this study, we screened 2,3-butanediol (BDO)-producing PGPR to control tomato bacterial wilt and investigated the action mechanism of the disease control agent. Of the 943 strains isolated from soil, Klebsiella pneumoniae strain JCK-2201 produced the highest concentration of 2,3-BDO. The culture broth of K. pneumoniae JCK-2201 did not show any direct activity on R. solanacearum in vitro, but a 100-fold dilution effectively controlled tomato bacterial wilt with a control value of 77% in vivo. Fermentation utilizing K. pneumoniae JCK-2201 was optimized to produce 48 g/L of meso-2,3-BDO, which is 50% of the sucrose conversion efficiency. In addition, the control efficacy and mechanism of meso-2,3-BDO produced by JCK-2201 in tomato bacterial wilt were determined by comparative analysis with Bacillus licheniformis DSM13 producing meso-2,3-BDO and B. licheniformis DSM13 ΔalsS that did not produce 2,3-BDO, as the step of converting pyruvate to α-acetolactate was omitted. Tomato seedlings treated with the K. pneumoniae JCK-2201 (500-fold dilution) and B. licheniformis DSM13 (100-fold dilution) culture broth produced meso-2,3-BDO that significantly reduced R. solanacearum-induced disease severity with control values of 55% and 63%, respectively. The formulated meso-2,3-BDO 9% soluble concentrate (SL; 1,000-fold dilution) showed 87% control against tomato bacterial wilt in the field condition. Klebsiella pneumoniae JCK-2201 and B. licheniformis DSM13 treatment induced the expression of plant defense marker genes, such as LePR1, LePR2, LePR5, LePR3, and PI-II, in the salicylic acid and jasmonic acid signaling pathways at 4 days after inoculation. These results show that 2,3-BDO-producing bacteria and 2,3-BDO are potential biological control agents that act through induction of resistance for controlling tomato bacterial wilt.

Certain Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) strains such as Bt subsp. kurstaki and Bt subsp. aizawai have been widely used for pest management in agricultural practices. However, each strain only shows high specificity for pest control against a narrow range of lepidopteran species, and numerous lepidopteran pests have developed resistance to commercialized Bt strains. Therefore, there is a need for the development of novel Bt bioinsecticides which allow for potent and broad-spectrum insecticidal activity against lepidopteran species, including Spodoptera spp. (Noctuidae) and Plutella xylostealla (Plutellidae). In order to develop a novel bioinsecticide using Bt subsp. kurstaki IMBL-B9 (Btk IMBL-B9) that exhibits excellent insecticidal activity against three different lepidopteran species, we have developed a viable microencapsulation-based spray drying Btk IMBL-B9 formulation. The spore-crystal complex of Btk IMBL-B9 was microencapsulated using coating materials such as gum arabic, maltodextrin, and corn starch via spray drying. The encapsulated formulation of Btk IMBL-B9 presented an increased survival rate and storage stability at 54  ±  2°C for up to 6  weeks. The formulation showed similar insecticidal activity as the commercial bioinsecticide XenTari® against P. xylostella. Under controlled greenhouse conditions, the Btk IMBL-B9 formulation was more effective against Lepidoptera spp. S. frugiperda and P. xylostella, than XenTari®. These results suggest that the microencapsulationbased spray drying formulation of Btk IMBL-B9 can be used effectively for the control of a wide range of moths. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pseudomonas spp. produce various antimicrobial substances, including cyclic peptides, which have been shown to suppress fungal pathogens. In a previous study, Pseudomonas sesami BC42 was selected to control anthracnose caused by Colletotrichum orbiculare in cucumber plants, and the bioactive extract of strain BC42 inhibited fungal growth and development. In this work, preparative thinlayer chromatography was conducted to identify the antifungal compounds in the extract of strain BC42, and the portion of the extract that exhibited antifungal activity was further analyzed by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. Three different isomers of the cyclic dipeptide, cyclo(Leu-Pro), were identified: cyclo(l-Leu-l-Pro), cyclo(d-Leu-d-Pro), and cyclo(d-Leu-l-Pro). Among these, 100  μg/mL of cyclo(l-Leu-l-Pro) significantly and more effectively inhibited the germination of conidia and appressorium formation and reduced leaf lesion size caused by C. orbiculare, relative to the control; cyclo(d-Leu-d-Pro) significantly reduced conidia germination and lesion occurrence, however, cyclo(d-Leul-Pro) did not exhibit antifungal activity. Therefore, the cyclo(l-Leu-l-Pro) and cyclo(d-Leu-d-Pro) derived from P. sesami BC42 may be a promising candidate for biocontrol applications in agriculture. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Bacterial plant diseases cause tremendous economic losses worldwide. However, a few effective and sustainable control methods are currently available. To discover novel and effective management approaches, we screened marine fungi for their antibacterial activity against phytopathogenic bacteria in vitro and in vivo. Methods: We screened the culture broth of 55 fungal strains isolated fromvarious marine sources (seawater, algae, and sediment) for their in vitro antibacterial activity using the broth microdilution method. Then, only the fungal strain (designated UL-Ce9) with higher antibacterial activity in vitro was tested in an in vivo experiment against tomato bacterial wilt. The active compounds of UL-Ce9 were extracted using ethyl acetate, purified by a series of chromatography, and the structure was elucidated by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Pesticide formulations of toluquinol were prepared as soluble concentrates and wettable powder. The disease control efficacy of toluquinol formulations was evaluated against blight of rice and the bacterial wilt of tomato. Results and discussion: The culture broth of UL-Ce9 showed high antibacterial activity against Agrobacterium tumefaciens, Ralstonia solanacearum, and Xanthomonas arboricola pv. pruni in vitro, and we selected UL-Ce9 for the in vivo test. The UL-Ce9 culture broth completely suppressed the bacterial wilt of tomato at a dilution of 1:5. The phylogenetic analysis identified UL-Ce9 as Penicillium griseofulvum, and the antibacterial metabolites were revealed as patulin, gentisyl alcohol, and toluquinol, all of which were associated with the biosynthetic pathway of the mycotoxin patulin. Patulin exhibited the highest antibacterial activity against 16 phytopathogenic bacteria in vitro, followed by toluquinol and gentisyl alcohol. As patulin is toxic, we selected toluquinol to investigate its potential use as a pesticide against bacterial plant diseases. Compared with the chemicals currently being applied in agriculture (streptomycin and oxytetracycline), toluquinol formulations exhibited similar and higher control efficacies against bacterial leaf blight of rice and bacterial wilt of tomato, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of the antibacterial activity of toluquinol against phytopathogenic bacteria. Our results suggest that toluquinol is a potential candidate for the development of novel and effective pesticides for the management of bacterial plant diseases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
