Abstract Magnons, bosonic quasiparticles carrying angular momentum, can flow through insulators for information transmission with minimal power dissipation. However, it remains challenging to develop a magnon-based logic due to the lack of efficient electrical manipulation of magnon transport. Here we show the electric excitation and control of multiferroic magnon modes in a spin-source/multiferroic/ferromagnet structure. We demonstrate that the ferroelectric polarization can electrically modulate the magnon-mediated spin-orbit torque by controlling the non-collinear antiferromagnetic structure in multiferroic bismuth ferrite thin films with coupled antiferromagnetic and ferroelectric orders. In this multiferroic magnon torque device, magnon information is encoded to ferromagnetic bits by the magnon-mediated spin torque. By manipulating the two coupled non-volatile state variables—ferroelectric polarization and magnetization—we further present reconfigurable logic operations in a single device. Our findings highlight the potential of multiferroics for controlling magnon information transport and offer a pathway towards room-temperature voltage-controlled, low-power, scalable magnonics for in-memory computing.

Due to the concentrated carbon emission sources and the enormous carbon emissions in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous, it is necessary to evaluate carbon sequestration potential to support future CCUS planning and major demonstrations. Based on the basic geological conditions for carbon sequestration in Ningxia, this study used the volumetric method of the US Department of Energy (US-DOE) to assess the geological potential for deep saline aquifer sequestration in Ningxia. The results show that the predicted geological potential of carbon sequestration in the deep saline aquifers in Ningxia is approximately 86.742 billion tons, with the predicted technical capacity of about 42.334 billion tons. The main reservoirs are concentrated in the Yanchi area in eastern Ningxia and the Liupan Mountain Basin. A preliminary evaluation of the suitability of saline aquifer sequestration in Ningxia was conducted by considering many factors such as the overall sequestration potential, cap rock integrity, geological stability, and socio-environmental risks. The results indicate that the Yanchi area in eastern Ningxia has favorable reservoir and cap rock conditions, stable structures, and low population density, making it a potential region for CO2 sequestration in Ningxia.

Abstract Ovalbumin (OVA) in egg is one of the predominant causes of food allergy around the world. In the present study, the alleviating effect of selenium‐enriched tea polysaccharide (Se‐TPS) on OVA allergy was evaluated, and the underlying mechanistic insights were investigated. Se‐TPS significantly alleviated the clinical manifestations and diarrhea of allergic mice, accelerated the recovery of jejunal injury, and decreased the immune organ index. Meanwhile, Se‐TPS decreased the levels of immunoglobulin E (IgE), histamine, and IL‐4 in serum, increased the levels of IFN‐γ, and promoted the balance of Th1/Th2 cells. Furthermore, the intervention of Se‐TPS reshaped the gut microbiota structure of OVA‐allergic mice. Se‐TPS increased the abundance of Lachnospiraceae_NK4A136_group, unclassified_f_Lachnospiraceae, and Alistipes, whereas decreased the Faecalibaculum abundance. Analysis of intestinal metabolites showed that Se‐TPS treatment caused a significant increase in homocitrulline and 7a‐hydroxyandrost‐4‐ene‐3,17‐dione levels. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment results indicated that Se‐TPS treatment may alleviate allergic symptoms by enhancing the anti‐inflammatory ability of OVA‐allergic mice through neuroimmunity.

Purpose: This study aimed to identify the altered pathways and genes associated with freezing damage in human sperm during cryopreservation by multiomics analysis. Materials and Methods: Fifteen fresh human semen samples were collected for transcriptomic analysis, and another 5 fresh human semen samples were obtained for metabolomic analysis. For each semen sample, 1 mL was cryopreserved, and another 1 mL was left untreated for paired design. The results were then combined with previously published proteomic results to identify key genes/pathways. Results: Cryopreservation significantly reduced sperm motility and mitochondrial structure. Transcriptomic analysis revealed altered mitochondrial function, including changes in tRNA-methyltransferase activity and adenosine tri-phosphate/adenosine di-phosphate transmembrane transporter activity. Metabolomic analysis showed that the citrate cycle in mitochondria was significantly altered. Combining transcriptomic, proteomic, and metabolomic analyses revealed 346 genes that were altered in at least two omics analyses. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analysis showed that metabolic pathways were significantly altered and strongly associated with mitochondria. Five genes were altered in all three omics analyses: COL11A1, COL18A1, LPCAT3, NME1, and NNT. Conclusions: Five genes were identified by multiomics analysis in human cryopreserved sperm. These genes might have specific functions in cryopreservation. Explorations of the functions of these genes will be helpful for sperm cryopreservation and sperm motility improvement or even for reproduction in the future.

Abstract Postoperative neurological dysfunction (PND) is one of the most common complications after a total aortic arch replacement (TAAR). Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) monitoring of cerebral hypoxia injury during TAAR is a promising technique for preventing the occurrence of PND. This study aimed to explore the feasibility of electrical impedance tomography (EIT) for warning of potential brain injury during total aortic arch replacement (TAAR) through building the correlation between EIT extracted parameters and variation of neurological biomarkers in serum. Patients with Stanford type A aortic dissection and requiring TAAR who were admitted between December 2021 to March 2022 were included. A 16-electrode EIT system was adopted to monitor each patient’s cerebral impedance intraoperatively. Five parameters of EIT signals regarding to the hypothermic circulatory arrest (HCA) period were extracted. Meanwhile, concentration of four neurological biomarkers in serum were measured regarding to time before and right after surgery, 12 h, 24 h and 48 h after surgery. The correlation between EIT parameters and variation of serum biomarkers were analyzed. A total of 57 TAAR patients were recruited. The correlation between EIT parameters and variation of biomarkers were stronger for patients with postoperative neurological dysfunction (PND(+)) than those without postoperative neurological dysfunction (PND(−)) in general. Both increased plant density and wide seedling strip planting (WSP) can improve wheat grain yield. However, whether and how greater gains in grain yield can be achieved by combining WSP with an increased plant density is unclear. In this study, two winter wheat cultivars were subjected to three plant densities (lower, normal, and higher) and two planting patterns (conventional planting [CP] and WSP). The effects of plant density, planting pattern, and their combination on the solar radiation interception and conversion, biomass accumulation, harvest index, and grain yield were investigated. In response to an increase in plant density from lower to higher and a shift from CP to WSP and their combination, grain yield increased by 15.43 %, 10.85 % and 27.62 % for cultivar Taimai198, and by 13.13 %, 8.31 % and 22.41 % for Shannong30, respectively. The larger increases in grain yield were mainly ascribed to enhanced dry matter production, in particular after anthesis with no variation or a slight decline in the harvest index. The higher plant density was the dominant driver of the enhanced radiation interception, whereas WSP was mainly responsible for ameliorating the reduction in radiation use efficiency (RUE) caused by the higher plant density. The combined effects of these two management practices in increasing grain yield were much greater than the independent effects of a shift from CP to WSP or an increase in plant density. Optimizing the planting method may thus be a promising option for further improving grain yield of a densely planted wheat population by increasing the RUE.

Abstract Background Monosaccharide transporter (MST) family, as a carrier for monosaccharide transport, plays an important role in carbon partitioning and widely involves in plant growth and development, stress response, and signaling transduction. However, little information on the MST family genes is reported in maize (Zea mays), especially in response to abiotic stresses. In this study, the genome-wide identification of MST family genes was performed in maize. Result A total of sixty-six putative members of MST gene family were identified and divided into seven subfamilies (including SPT, PMT, VGT, INT, pGlcT, TMT, and ERD) using bioinformatics approaches, and gene information, phylogenetic tree, chromosomal location, gene structure, motif composition, and cis-acting elements were investigated. Eight tandem and twelve segmental duplication events were identified, which played an important role in the expansion of the ZmMST family. Synteny analysis revealed the evolutionary features of MST genes in three gramineous crop species. The expression analysis indicated that most of the PMT, VGT, and ERD subfamilies members responded to osmotic and cadmium stresses, and some of them were regulated by ABA signaling, while only a few members of other subfamilies responded to stresses. In addition, only five genes were induced by NaCl stress in MST family. Conclusion These results serve to understand the evolutionary relationships of the ZmMST family genes and supply some insight into the processes of monosaccharide transport and carbon partitioning on the balance between plant growth and development and stress response in maize.

Abstract Background Associations between perceived and actual risk of HIV infection and HIV prevention services uptake are inconclusive. This study aimed to evaluate the discrepancy between the perceived and actual HIV risk, and quantify the associations between perceived and actual risk of HIV infection and three HIV prevention services utilization among men who have sex with men (MSM) in Shandong province, China. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted in Shandong province in June 2021. Participants were eligible if they were born biologically male, aged 18 years or older, had negative or unknown HIV status, and had sex with men in the past year. Participants were recruited online. The discrepancy between their perceived and actual risk of HIV infection was evaluated by calculating the Kappa value. Bayesian model averaging was used to assess the associations between perceived and actual risk of HIV infection and HIV prevention services uptake. Results A total of 1136 MSM were recruited, most of them were 30 years old or younger (59.9%), single (79.5%), with at least college education level (74.7%). Most participants (97.4%) perceived that they had low risk of HIV infection, and 14.1% were assessed with high actual risk. Ceria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (Ce-TZP) has exceptional fracture toughness and flaw tolerance due to facile t‒m phase transformation toughening. However, its wider-range applications are limited by its relatively low strength due to its large grain size and low transformation stress, which results in yield-like failure. Here, we combined additive manufacturing (AM), pressureless two-step sintering, and hot isostatic pressing (HIP), and addressed the challenging grain size refinement problem in Ce-TZPs. We successfully produced dense ultrafine-grained Ce-TZP ceramics with an average grain size below 500 nm, a three-point bending strength above 800 MPa, and a single-edge-notch-beam fracture toughness in the range of 11‒12 MPa·m1/2. The critical roles of processing design, mixed Ce valences, and under- vs. over-stabilization of tetragonal polymorphs were noted. Our work offers insights and strategies for the future development of stronger and tougher Ce-TZP ceramics that can compete with tetragonal yttria-stabilized zirconia in various applications, including additive manufacturing.

Abstract Objective Most studies investigated the relationship between COVID-19 and Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) by comparing the incidence of GBS before and during the pandemic of COVID-19. However, the findings were inconsistent, probably owing to varying degrees of the lockdown policy. The quarantine requirements and travel restrictions in China were lifted around December 7, 2022. This study aimed to explore whether the relative frequency of GBS increased during the major outbreak in the absence of COVID-19-mandated social restrictions in China. Methods GBS patients admitted to the First Hospital, Shanxi Medical University, from December 7, 2022 to February 20, 2023, and from June, 2017 to August, 2019 were included. The relative frequencies of GBS in hospitalized patients during different periods were compared. The patients with and without SARS-CoV-2 infection within six weeks prior to GBS onset formed the COVID-GBS group and non-COVID-GBS group, respectively. Abstract Background Inflammation and dysregulated immunity play vital roles in idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension (IPAH), while the mechanisms that initiate and promote these processes are unclear. Methods Transcriptomic data of lung tissues from IPAH patients and controls were obtained from the Gene Expression Omnibus database. Weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA), differential expression analysis, protein-protein interaction (PPI) and functional enrichment analysis were combined with a hemodynamically-related histopathological score to identify inflammation-associated hub genes in IPAH. The monocrotaline-induced rat model of pulmonary hypertension was utilized to confirm the expression pattern of these hub genes. Single-cell RNA-sequencing (scRNA-seq) data were used to identify the hub gene-expressing cell types and their intercellular interactions. Results Through an extensive bioinformatics analysis, CXCL9, CCL5, GZMA and GZMK were identified as hub genes that distinguished IPAH patients from controls. Among these genes, pulmonary expression levels of Cxcl9, Ccl5 and Gzma were elevated in monocrotaline-exposed rats. Further investigation revealed that only CCL5 and GZMA were highly expressed in T and NK cells, where CCL5 mediated T and NK cell interaction with endothelial cells, smooth muscle cells, and fibroblasts through multiple receptors. Conclusions Our study identified a new inflammatory pathway in IPAH, where T and NK cells drove heightened inflammation predominantly via the upregulation of CCL5, providing groundwork for the development of targeted therapeutics.

Abstract Background The lncRNA growth arrest-specific 5 (GAS5) is involved in regulating breast cancer progression. In this study, we aimed to elucidate the function and mechanism of GAS5 in breast cancer. Methods The expressions of GAS5, fat mass and obesity-associated protein (FTO), insulin-like growth factor 2 mRNA-binding protein 2 (IGF2BP2), and Quaking (QKI) were assessed by quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) and western blot. The m6A modification level of GAS5 was detected using m6A immunoprecipitation assay (MeRIP). The interaction between IGF2BP2 and GAS5 or QKI was detected using RNA immunoprecipitation assay (RIP) and dual luciferase reporter assay. Cell proliferation was measured using the Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) assay. The biological functions of the FTO/GAS5/IGF2BP2/QKI axis was assessed using the tumor xenograft assay. Results LncRNA GAS5 expression decreased in breast cancer and was regulated by FTO-mediated m6A modification in an IGF2BP2-dependent manner, resulting in decreased GAS5 stability and expression. GAS5 recruited IGF2BP2 to target QKI and upregulated QKI expression in breast cancer cells. GAS5 suppressed breast cancer growth via IGF2BP2/QKI, and this inhibitory effect was modulated by FTO both in vitro and in vivo. Conclusions GAS5 regulated by FTO-mediated m6A modification represses the growth of breast cancer via the IGF2BP2/QKI pathway, suggesting that the FTO/GAS5/IGF2BP2/QKI pathway can be a potential target for breast cancer treatment.

Extrusion-based 3D bioprinting techniques are revolutionizing bioengineering by facilitating the creation of complex 3D microstructures. This review offers a thorough overview of extrusion-based 3D bioprinting methods, particularly highlighting the innovative electric-assisted coil-write 3D bioprinting technology. The review begins by explicating the fundamental principles underlying various extrusion-based 3D bioprinting technologies. It covers the printing equipment composition, suitable materials for 3D bioprinting, and the latest breakthroughs in technology. A critical aspect of this review is the in-depth comparison of the strengths and weaknesses associated with each 3D bioprinting approach. The electro-microfluidic extrusion method and the electric-assisted coil-write 3D bioprinting technology are highlighted. This advanced technology successfully overcomes the limitations of conventional extrusion-based methods, notably in the precise printing of intricately curved line structures with high resolution and speed. This method ingeniously integrates mechanical motion for creating microscale features with electrical coiling for sub-micron details, thus achieving remarkable printing speeds and structural complexity. This review concludes by exploring the potential applications and future advancements of this state-of-the-art technology. It underscores the ability of electric-assisted coil-write 3D bioprinting to develop pioneering materials and micro-devices for a variety of technological sectors, highlighting its transformative impact in bioengineering.

Abstract Objective This study aimed to establish and validate a nomogram prognostic model for predicting short-term efficacy of acetylcholine receptor antibody-positive (AChR-Ab+) generalized myasthenia gravis (GMG). Methods A retrospective observational study was conducted at the First Hospital of Shanxi Medical University, enrolling patients diagnosed with AChR-Ab+ GMG from May 2020 to September 2022. The primary outcome was the change in the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America (MGFA) post-intervention status after 6 months of standard treatment. Predictive factors were identified through univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses, with significant factors incorporated into the nomogram. The bootstrap test was used for internal validation of the nomogram model. Model performance was assessed using calibration curves, receiver-operating characteristic curve analysis, and decision curve analysis (DCA). Results A total of 90 patients were enrolled, of whom 30 achieved unchanged or worse status after 6 months of standard therapy. Univariate logistic regression analysis showed that quantitative myasthenia gravis score, gender, body mass index, course of disease, hemoglobin levels, and white blood cell counts were six potential predictors. These factors were used for multivariate logistic regression analysis, and a nomogram was constructed. The calibration curve showed that the predicted value was in good agreement with the actual value (p = 0.707), and the area under the curve value (0.792, 95% CI 0.686–0.899) indicated good discrimination ability. DCA suggests that this model has potential clinical application value. Conclusion The constructed nomogram, based on key patient indicators, shows promise as a clinically useful tool for predicting the short-term efficacy of treatment of AChR-Ab+ GMG. Validation in larger, multicenter cohorts is needed to further substantiate its applicability.

Abstract Introduction The replacement intervals for infusion sets may differ among healthcare institutions, which may have an impact on the occurrence of central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI). Nevertheless, there exists a limited amount of high-quality evidence available to assist clinicians in determining the most suitable replacement intervals for infusion sets. Therefore, the objective of this trial is to compare the efficacy of 24-h and 96-h replacement intervals for infusion sets on CLABSI among critically ill adults who have central venous access devices. Methods This is a multicenter, parallel-group randomized controlled trial that will investigate the effect of infusion set replacement intervals on CLABSI in adult patients admitted to intensive care units (ICUs). The study will enroll 1240 participants who meet the inclusion criteria, which includes being 18 years or older, expected to stay in the ICU for longer than 96 h, and in need of central venous access. Participants will be randomly assigned to either a control group receiving a 96-h replacement interval or a treatment group receiving a 24-h replacement interval. Planned Outcome The primary outcome of this trial is the rate of CLABSI within 28 days after randomization. Conclusion This is the first randomized controlled trial to investigate the effects of infusion set replacement at 24-h and 96-h intervals on CLABSI in ICU patients. Abstract Background Clinical practice guidelines on limitation of life-sustaining treatments (LST) in the intensive care unit (ICU), in the form of withholding or withdrawal of LST, state that there is no ethical difference between the two. Such statements are not uniformly accepted worldwide, and there are few studies on LST limitation in Asia. This study aimed to evaluate the predictors and outcomes of withholding and withdrawal of LST in Singapore, focusing on the similarities and differences between the two approaches. Methods This was a multicentre observational study of patients admitted to 21 adult ICUs across 9 public hospitals in Singapore over an average of three months per year from 2014 to 2019. The primary outcome measures were withholding and withdrawal of LST (cardiopulmonary resuscitation, invasive mechanical ventilation, and vasopressors/inotropes). The secondary outcome measure was hospital mortality. Multivariable generalised mixed model analysis was used to identify independent predictors for withdrawal and withholding of LST and if LST limitation predicts hospital mortality. Results There were 8907 patients and 9723 admissions. Of the former, 80.8% had no limitation of LST, 13.0% had LST withheld, and 6.2% had LST withdrawn. Common independent predictors for withholding and withdrawal were increasing age, absence of chronic kidney dialysis, greater dependence in activities of daily living, cardiopulmonary resuscitation before ICU admission, higher Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation (APACHE) II score, and higher level of care in the first 24 h of ICU admission. Additional predictors for withholding included being of Chinese race, the religions of Hinduism and Islam, malignancy, and chronic liver failure. The additional predictor for withdrawal was lower hospital paying class (with greater government subsidy for hospital bills). Abstract Background Proper flowering time is important for the growth and development of plants, and both too early and too late flowering impose strong negative influences on plant adaptation and seed yield. Thus, it is vitally important to study the mechanism underlying flowering time control in plants. In a previous study by the authors, genome-wide association analysis was used to screen the candidate gene SISTER OF FCA (SSF) that regulates FLOWERING LOCUS C (FLC), a central gene encoding a flowering suppressor in Arabidopsis thaliana. Results SSF physically interacts with Protein arginine methyltransferase 5 (PRMT5, SKB1). Subcellular co—localization analysis showed that SSF and SKB1 interact in the nucleus. Genetically, SSF and SKB1 exist in the same regulatory pathway that controls FLC expression. Furthermore, RNA-sequencing analysis showed that both SSF and SKB1 regulate certain common pathways. Conclusions This study shows that PRMT5 interacts with SSF, thus controlling FLC expression and facilitating flowering time control.

Vegetation restoration is crucial for improving the ecological environment of mining areas, which could promote the development of reconstructed soil, thus regulating biogeochemical cycles, and exerting ecosystem functions. Starch production from fresh sweet potatoes generates process wastewater called sweet potato cell liquid (SPCL), which is rich in sweet potato protein (SPP). Currently, the commonly used protein recovery methods, such as isoelectric point precipitation and ultrafiltration, were not suitable for SPP recovery due to the low protein content of SPCL and the high cost of recovery. The feasibility of recovering SPP by SPCL acidification via inoculation-assisted fermentation was investigated in this study. The results indicated that the pH of SPCL could be reduced to approximately 4.0 within 6 h of fermentation with inoculation, resulting in an SPP extraction yield of 55.45% and purity of 66.23 g protein/100 g. With the addition of heating treatment, the extraction yield of SPP increased to 76.97–95.34%, while it maintained the purity of 66.36–70.12 g protein/100 g. The composition analysis revealed that SPP products contained sugars (below 11.5 g/100 g) in addition to protein and trace amounts of lignin and phenolics. Functional properties analysis showed that the SPP recovered by inoculation-enhanced fermentation exhibited better emulsifying and foaming properties, and higher digestibility compared to the SPP precipitated using hydrochloric acid. The method of extracting SPP from SPCL by inoculation-enhanced fermentation, as developed in this study, was a straightforward and cost-effective process that fosters significant potential for industrial applications.

Abstract Our study aimed to identify the optimal scoring system for predicting the prognosis of patients with sepsis-associated acute respiratory failure (SA-ARF). All data were taken from the fourth version of the Markets in Intensive Care Medicine (MIMIC-IV) database. Independent risk factors for death in hospitals were confirmed by regression analysis. The predictive value of the five scoring systems was evaluated by receiving operating characteristic (ROC) curves. Kaplan‒Meier curves showed the impact of acute physiology score III (APSIII) on survival and prognosis in patients with SA-ARF. Decision curve analysis (DCA) identified a scoring system with the highest net clinical benefit. ROC curve analysis showed that APS III (AUC: 0.755, 95% Cl 0.714–0.768) and Logical Organ Dysfunction System (LODS) (AUC: 0.731, 95% Cl 0.717–0.7745) were better than Simplified Acute Physiology Score II (SAPS II) (AUC: 0.727, 95% CI 0.713–0.741), Oxford Acute Severity of Illness Score (OASIS) (AUC: 0.706, 95% CI 0.691–0.720) and Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) (AUC: 0.606, 95% CI 0.590–0.621) in assessing in-hospital mortality. Kaplan‒Meier survival analysis patients in the high-APS III score group had a considerably poorer median survival time. The DCA curve showed that APS III may provide better clinical benefits for patients. We demonstrated that the APS III score is an excellent predictor of in-hospital mortality.

Abstract Background Late-onset multiple acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency (MADD) is the most common lipid storage myopathy. There are sex differences in fat metabolism and it is not known whether late-onset MADD affects men and women equally. Methods In this systematic review and meta-analysis, the PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, CNKI, CBM, and Wanfang databases were searched until 01/08/2023. Studies reporting sex distribution in patients with late-onset MADD were included. Two authors independently screened studies for eligibility, extracted data, and assessed risk of bias. Pre-specified outcomes of interest were the male-to-female ratio (MFR) of patients with late-onset MADD, the differences of clinical characteristics between the sexes, and factors influencing the MFR. Results Of 3379 identified studies, 34 met inclusion criteria, yielding a total of 609 late-onset MADD patients. The overall pooled percentage of males was 58% (95% CI, 54-63%) with low heterogeneity across studies (I 2 = 2.99%; P = 0.42). The mean onset ages, diagnostic delay, serum creatine kinase (CK), and allelic frequencies of 3 hotspot variants in ETFDH gene were similar between male and female patients (P > 0.05). Background and aimsContrast-associated acute kidney injury (CA-AKI) may occur in patients undergoing medical procedures involving x-rays and radiocontrast media, potentially resulting in prolonged renal impairment. However, no effective treatments are available. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the efficacy of evolocumab, a proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 inhibitor, in reducing CA-AKI incidence among patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention.MethodsThis retrospective cohort study included patients who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention between January 2020 and December 2021 at Tianjin Chest Hospital. The study endpoint was CA-AKI incidence, and the impact of selection bias and other potential confounding factors was mitigated using bias matching. ObjectiveThis study aims to assess the potential efficacy of cochlear implantation as a treatment for patients with Waardenburg syndrome (WS) and to guide clinical work by comparing the effect of auditory and speech recovery after cochlear implantation in patients with WS and non-WS.MethodsPubMed, the Cochrane Library, CNKI, and Wanfang Data were sources for retrieving literature on cochlear implantation in WS, and clinical data meeting the inclusion criteria were meta-analyzed using RevMan5.41.ResultsA total of nine articles were included in this study, including 132 patients with WS and 815 patients in the control group. Meta-analysis showed that there are no significant differences in the scores for categories of audit performance (CAP), speech intelligibility rating (SIR), and parents’ evaluation of aural/oral performance of children (PEACH) between the WS group and the control group.ConclusionCochlear implantation demonstrates comparable auditory and speech recovery outcomes for WS patients and non-WS patients.

ABSTRACT Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a global health challenge that particularly affects the quality of life of children. Human rhinovirus (HRV) infection usually causes common cold in the upper respiratory tract (URT) and can also affect airway allergy development, such as asthma exacerbation, but its relationship with AR is poorly understood. The study aimed to gain insight into the characteristics of HRV that is prevalent in AR children and its role in AR severity. A total of 362 children with symptomatic AR were enrolled from southwestern China during 2022–2023, and nasal lavage samples were collected for HRV molecular characterization and cytokine measurement. HRV was detected in 40% of the AR children, with peak detection in autumn. The positive rate was not correlated with whether the subjects were under allergen-specific immunotherapy (AIT). Among the detected HRVs, 42% were species A, 36% were species B, and 22% were species C, involving 21 A genotypes, 6 B genotypes, and 7 C genotypes. HRV positivity was significantly associated with symptom severity (visual analog scale [VAS] score) and elevated levels of local nasal IgE, interleukin-25 (IL-25), IL-4, and CXCL13 in AR children who did not receive antiallergic treatment. All three species of HRV strains (A1B, A21, B27, B70, and C17) had been isolated and were able to infect respiratory epithelial tissue in vitro. Complete genome sequencing showed that the antigenic epitopes of the isolated HRVs had certain variations. Our work reveals the etiological characteristics of URT-HRV in AR children and suggests a role of HRV infection in the pathogenesis of childhood AR.IMPORTANCEOur study revealed high human rhinovirus (HRV) detection rate in children with allergic rhinitis (AR), and HRV infection (A, B, or C species) is positively associated with the symptom severity in AR children. Elevated nasal IgE, interleukin-25 (IL-25), IL-4, and CXCL13 levels suggest a potential pathogenic mechanism by which HRV infection induces nasal type 2 immune/inflammation responses and local IgE production in AR patients. In addition, etiological analysis found that the main prevalent HRV species in AR children are A and B (~80%), which is different from acute respiratory infection and asthma exacerbation, where species A and C are dominant. The data reveal the distinct species prevalence characteristics of HRV infection in AR. Finally, we isolated all three species of HRV strains from nasal cavity of AR children with varying degrees of antigenic epitope mutations and in vitro infectivity, highlighting the importance of strengthening monitoring and intervention for respiratory HRV infection in AR children.

Summary: In contrast to most hematopoietic lineages, megakaryocytes (MKs) can derive rapidly and directly from hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs). The underlying mechanism is unclear, however. Here, we show that DNA damage induces MK markers in HSCs and that G2 arrest, an integral part of the DNA damage response, suffices for MK priming followed by irreversible MK differentiation in HSCs, but not in progenitors. We also show that replication stress causes DNA damage in HSCs and is at least in part due to uracil misincorporation in vitro and in vivo. Consistent with this notion, thymidine attenuated DNA damage, improved HSC maintenance, and reduced the generation of CD41+ MK-committed HSCs. Replication stress and concomitant MK differentiation is therefore one of the barriers to HSC maintenance. DNA damage-induced MK priming may allow rapid generation of a lineage essential to immediate organismal survival, while also removing damaged cells from the HSC pool.

Background: Death caused by respiratory tract infection is one of the leading causes of death in the world today. Shufeng Jiedu Capsule (SFJDC) is a traditional Chinese medicine that has been widely used clinically for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), H1N1 influenza virus pneumonia and other diseases. Its pharmacological effect is to inhibit inflammation and improve the body's ability to clear viruses. However, the mechanism of SFJDC in the treatment of viral pneumonia, especially its effect on the inflammatory-immune microenvironment of lung tissue remains unclear. Methods: Mice with H1N1 influenza virus pneumonia were used as a model to verify the efficacy of SFJDC through death protection, lung index, viral load, and HE staining of lung tissue. The levels of inflammatory cytokines and chemokines in lung tissue were investigated by multi-analyte immunoassay. The number and proportion of cells in peripheral blood were detected by blood routine. The percentage of infiltrating immune cells in lung tissue was detected by flow cytometry and immunofluorescence. Results: SFJDC (2.2 g/kg·d−1 and 1.1 g/kg·d−1) increased survival rate (P＜0.01, P＜0.05), prolonged the survival period of mice, and alleviated the histopathological damage in lung (P＜0.01). SFJDC (2.2 g/kg·d−1, 1.1 g/kg·d−1 and 0.055 g/kg·d−1) increased body weight(P＜0.01, P＜0.05), improved activity status, reduced the lung index (P＜0.01, P＜0.05) and viral load (P＜0.01). SFJDC (2.2 g/kg·d−1 and 1.1 g/kg·d−1) reduced interleukin-1β (IL-1β), interleukin-18(IL-18), tumour necrosis factor α (TNF-α), monocyte chemoattractant protein (MCP), chemokine (C-X-C motif) ligand 1 (CXCL1) (P＜0.01, P＜0.05), and SFJDC (2.2 g/kg·d−1) increased IL-10 levels (P＜0.05) to regulate inflammation. SFJDC (2.2 g/kg·d−1) increased the percentages of CD4+ T cells (P＜0.01), CD8+ T cells (P＜0.05), and B cells(P＜0.05), and decreased F4/80+ macrophages (P＜0.05). Conclusion: Our findings indicated that SFJDC could inhibit inflammation and lung injury while maintaining the function of the adaptive immune response mediated by T and B cells, and promote the clearance of the virus, thereby treating influenza A (H1N1) virus-induced pneumonia.

Abstract Aqueous zinc‐ion batteries (ZIBs) have attracted extensive interest for the next‐generation batteries, which, however, are facing great challenges due to the poor reversibility of zinc (Zn) anodes and side reactions of water decomposition. Herein, we demonstrated a strategy that the solvation sheath of Zn ions could be facilely regulated by supramolecular coordination chemistry by adding small amounts of cyclodextrins (CDs) and, hence, inhibited the side reactions and side products, widened the electrochemical window, facilitated the homogenous deposition of Zn ions, refined the Zn grains, and enhanced the stability of Zn anodes. Importantly, we demonstrated that compared with α‐ and β‐CD, the γ‐CD showed the best regulation effect of the solvation sheath of Zn ions either at the same molar ratio or at the same mass concentration, which could be ascribed to their difference in supramolecular coordination chemistry and the strongest interaction of γ‐CD with Zn ions. As a result, with γ‐CD, the Zn//Zn symmetric cells showed ultrahigh stability with a cycling lifespan of over 2400 h at a current density of 1 mA/cm2. These results highlight the regulation of solvation sheath by supramolecular coordination chemistry for highly stable Zn anodes and pave a new way to realize high‐performance ZIBs.

Rice body synovitis (RBS) is a rare disease, especially in children. Rheumatoid disorders and tuberculosis are the first two reasons for the formation of the RB. The diagnosis is mainly based on imaging and histopathological features. Herein, we report three cases of RBS in children diagnosed with congenital synovial chondromatosis, tuberculosis (unconfirmed), and ANA -positive juvenile idiopathic arthritis. Clinical features, radiographic findings, pathophysiology, treatment process, and prognosis were reviewed and documented meticulously to enhance cognition in this population and provide some references for clinicians in diagnosing and treating the disease.

Gaining insights into overarching trends in chemical reaction systems is crucial for refining reaction conditions and developing novel reactions. These knowledgements include preferences for certain reagents, solvents, and functional group tolerance rules. Traditionally, synthetic chemists have relied on extensive literature searching to acquire the knowledge, a process that is both time-consuming and laborious. To streamline this process, we construct a standardized dataset and knowledge graph on an emerging domain, transition-metal-free transformations with organoborons. The dataset, compiled from organic reaction literature, includes comprehensive details of reaction scopes and conditions. The subsequent construction of a knowledge graph offers a visual representation of the reactions and their interrelationships. Through knowledge graph-based hierarchical analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we revealed the currently most frequently used reactants, synthetic conditions, and functional group rules in this field. We anticipate this knowledge graph-based approach will accelerate the acquisition and transfer of chemical reaction knowledge, catalyzing the discovery of new reactions. This work provides an automatic and adaptive framework for extracting key insights from reaction datasets to inform the design of novel reactions.

Abstract Preeclampsia (PE) is considered as a disease of placental origin. However, the specific mechanism of placental abnormalities remains elusive. This study identified thrombospondin‐1 (THBS1) is downregulated in preeclamptic placentae and negatively correlated with blood pressure. Functional studies show that THBS1 knockdown inhibits proliferation, migration, and invasion and increases the cycle arrest and apoptosis rate of HTR8/SVneo cells. Importantly, THBS1 silencing induces necroptosis in HTR8/SVneo cells, accompanied by the release of damage‐associated molecular patterns (DAMPs). Necroptosis inhibitors necrostatin‐1 and GSK′872 restore the trophoblast survival while pan‐caspase inhibitor Z‐VAD‐FMK has no effect. Mechanistically, the results show that THBS1 interacts with transforming growth factor B‐activated kinase 1 (TAK1), which is a central modulator of necroptosis quiescence and affects its stability. Moreover, THBS1 silencing up‐regulates the expression of neuronal precursor cell‐expressed developmentally down‐regulated 4 (NEDD4), which acts as an E3 ligase of TAK1 and catalyzes K48‐linked ubiquitination of TAK1 in HTR8/SVneo cells. Besides, THBS1 attenuates PE phenotypes and improves the placental necroptosis in vivo. Taken together, the down‐regulation of THBS1 destabilizes TAK1 by activating NEDD4‐mediated, K48‐linked TAK1 ubiquitination and promotes necroptosis and DAMPs release in trophoblast cells, thus participating in the pathogenesis of PE.

Abstract Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) seriously impede diabetic wound healing. The disruption or scavenging of NETs using deoxyribonuclease (DNase) or cationic nanoparticles has been limited by liberating trapped bacteria, short half‐life, or potential cytotoxicity. In this study, a positive correlation between the NETs level in diabetic wound exudation and the severity of wound inflammation in diabetic patients is established. Novel NETs scavenging bio‐based hydrogel microspheres ‘micro‐cage’, termed mPDA‐PEI@GelMA, is engineered by integrating methylacrylyl gelatin (GelMA) hydrogel microspheres with cationic polyethyleneimine (PEI)‐functionalized mesoporous polydopamine (mPDA). This unique ‘micro‐cage’ construct is designed to non‐contact scavenge of NETs between nanoparticles and the diabetic wound surface, minimizing biological toxicity and ensuring high biosafety. NETs are introduced into ‘micro‐cage’ along with wound exudation, and cationic mPDA‐PEI immobilizes them inside the ‘micro‐cage’ through a strong binding affinity to the cfDNA web structure. The findings demonstrate that mPDA‐PEI@GelMA effectively mitigates pro‐inflammatory responses associated with diabetic wounds by scavenging NETs both in vivo and in vitro. This work introduces a novel nanoparticle non‐contact NETs scavenging strategy to enhance diabetic wound healing processes, with potential benefits in clinical applications.

Background: Bazi Bushen capsule (BZBS) is a Chinese herbal compound that is clinically used to treat fatigue and forgetfulness. However, it is still unclear whether and how BZBS affects heart function decline in menopausal women. This study aimed to examine the effect of BZBS on cardiac function in a high-fat diet-fed ovariectomy (HFD-fed OVX) mouse model and elucidate the underlying mechanism of this effect. Methods: The experimental animals were divided into five groups: sham group, HFD-fed OVX group, and BZBS (0.7, 1.4, 2.8 g/kg) intervention groups. Senescence β-galactosidase staining and echocardiography were used to evaluate cardiac function. SwissTargetPrediction, KEGG and GO enrichment analyses were used to screen the underlying mechanism of BZBS. The morphological and functional changes in cardiac mitochondria and the underlying molecular mechanism were assessed by transmission electron microscopy, western blotting and biochemical assays. STRING database was used to analysis protein-protein interaction (PPI) network. Molecular docking studies were employed to predict the interactions of specific BZBS compounds with their protein targets. Results: BZBS treatment ameliorated cardiac senescence and cardiac systole injury in HFD-fed OVX mice. GO and KEGG analyses revealed that the 530 targets of the 14 main components of BZBS were enriched mainly in the oxidative stress-associated pathway, which was confirmed by the finding that BZBS treatment prevented abnormal morphological changes and oxidative stress damage to cardiac mitochondria in HFD-fed OVX mice. Furthermore, the STRING database showed that the targets of BZBS were broadly related to the Sirtuins family. And BZBS upregulated the SIRT3 and elevated the activity of SOD2 in the hearts of HFD-fed OVX mice, which was also verified in vitro. Additionally, we revealed that imperatorin and osthole from the BZBS upregulated the expression of SIRT3 by directly docking with the transcription factors HDAC1, HDAC2, and BRD4, which regulate the expression of SIRT3. Conclusion: This research shows that the antioxidative effect and cardioprotective role of BZBS on HFD-fed OVX mice involves an increase in the activity of the SIRT3/SOD2 pathway, and the imperatorin and osthole of BZBS may play central roles in this process.

Background: Thyroid cancer (TC) is the most common malignant tumor in the endocrine system, is also one of the head and neck tumor. Follicular Thyroid Carcinoma (FTC) plays an important role in the pathological classification of thyroid cancer. This study aimed to develop an innovative predictive tool, a nomogram, for predicting cancer specific survival (CSS) in middle-aged FTC patients. Methods: We collected patient data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. The data from patients between 2004 and 2015 were used as the training set, and the data from patients between 2016 and 2018 were used as the validation set. To identify independent risk factors affecting patient survival, univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses were performed. Based on this, we developed a nomogram model aimed at predicting CSS in middle-aged patients with FTC. The consistency index (C-index), the area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC), and the calibration curve were used to evaluate the accuracy and confidence of the model. Results: A total of 2470 patients were enrolled in this study, in which patients from 2004 to 2015 were randomly assigned to the training cohort (N = 1437) and validation cohort (N = 598), and patients from 2016 to 2018 were assigned to the external validation cohort (N = 435) in terms of time. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that marriage, histological grade and TNM stage were independent risk factors for survival. The C-index for the training cohort was 0.866 (95 % CI: 0.805–0.927), for the validation cohort it was 0.944 (95 % CI: 0.903–0.985), and for the external validation cohort, it reached 0.999 (95 % CI: 0.997–1.001). Calibration curves and AUC suggest that the model has good accuracy. Conclusions: We developed an innovative nomogram to predict CSS in middle-aged patients with FTC. Our model after a rigorous internal validation and external validation process, based on the time proved that the high level of accuracy and reliability. This tool helps healthcare professionals and patients make informed clinical decisions.

Soil heavy metal contamination has become a global environmental issue, which threaten soil quality, food security and human health. Symphytum officinale L. have exhibited high tolerance and restoration capacity to heavy metals (HMs) stress. However, little is known about the mechanisms of HMs in S. officinale. In this study, transcriptomic and physiological changes of S. officinale response to different HMs (Pb, Cd and Zn) were analyzed and investigated the key genes and pathways involved in HMs uptake patterns. The results showed that phenotypic effects are not significant, and antioxidant enzyme activities were all upregulated. Transcriptome analysis indicated that 1247 differential genes were up-regulated, and 1963 differential genes were down-regulated under Cd stress, while 3752 differential genes were up-regulated, and 7197 differential genes were down-regulated under Pb stress; and 527 differential genes were up-regulated; and 722 differential genes were down-regulated under Zn stress. Based on their expression, we preliminarily speculate that different HMs resistance of S. officinale may be regulated by the differential expression of key genes. These results provide a theoretical basis for determining the exact expression of genes in plants under different heavy metal stress, the processes involved molecular pathways, and how they can be efficiently utilized to improve plant tolerance to toxic metals and improve phytoremediation efficiency.

Ochratoxin A (OTA) contamination in grape juice has attracted widespread concern as OTA can lead to kidney disease and cause adverse neurological effects. An effective method to remove OTA is to make use of highly adsorbent materials that are able to remove the toxic contaminant. Recently, inactivated Lactobacillus plantarum-based biosorbents have shown to be an efficient, cost-effective and environmentally friendly bioremediation method in removing toxic pollutants such as OTA. We used five chemical thiol-modification methods to improve the adsorption efficiency of OTA in grape juice. The esterification of Lactobacillus plantarum (L-Es) significantly increased the sulfhydryl contents (-SH) by 251.33 μmol/g and >90% of OTA was removed. However, the inactivated microbial adsorbent was difficult to separate after adsorption and therefore, the prepared L-Es were embedded into the cellulose nanocrystals (L-Es@CNCs). Moreover, L-Es@CNCs significantly increased the adsorption rate of OTA in grape juice samples by 88.28% with negligible effects on juice quality due to the properties of easy re-use and excellent biodegradability. This showcases its potential application for OTA removal in the grape juice industry.

Objective This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of instant versus text messaging intervention (TMI) on antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence among men who have sex with men (MSM) living with HIV. Methods This study was conducted in an infectious disease hospital of Jinan, China from October 2020 to June 2021, using non-randomized concurrent controlled design to compare the effectiveness of instant messaging intervention (IMI) versus TMI. The intervention strategies (health messaging, medication reminder, and peer education) and contents were consistent between the two groups, and the difference was service delivery method and type of information. The primary outcome was the proportion of achieving optimal ART adherence, defined as never missing any doses and delayed any doses more than 1 hour. Results A total of 217 participants (including 72 in TMI group and 145 in IMI group) were included in the study. The proportion of achieving optimal adherence was higher in IMI group than TMI group at the first follow-up (90.2% versus 77.6%, p = 0.021) and second follow-up (86.5% versus 76.6%, p = 0.083). The effect of IMI versus TMI on improving ART adherence was found not to be statistically significant (risk ratio (RR) = 1.93, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.95–3.94) in complete-case analysis. However, when excluding participants who did not adhere to the interventions, a significant improvement was observed (RR = 2.77, 95%CI: 1.21–6.38). More participants in IMI group expressed highly rated satisfaction to the intervention services than those in TMI group (67.3% versus 50.0%). Conclusions The IMI demonstrated superior efficacy over TMI in improving ART adherence and satisfaction with intervention services. It is suggested that future digital health interventions targeting ART adherence should prioritize instant messaging with multimedia information in areas with Internet access. Abstract Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) has demonstrated its potential to enhance the light energy utilization ratio of perovskite solar cells by interacting with metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) and perovskite layers. However, comprehensive investigations into how MOF design and synthesis impact FRET in perovskite systems are scarce. In this work, nanoscale HIAM‐type Zr‐MOF (HIAM‐4023, HIAM‐4024, and HIAM‐4025) is meticulously tailored to evaluate FRET's existence and its influence on the perovskite photoactive layer. Through precise adjustments of amino groups and acceptor units in the organic linker, HIAM‐MOFs are synthesized with the same topology, but distinct photoluminescence (PL) emission properties. Significant FRET is observed between HIAM‐4023/HIAM‐4024 and the perovskite, confirmed by spectral overlap, fluorescence lifetime decay, and calculated distances between HIAM‐4023/HIAM‐4024 and the perovskite. Conversely, the spectral overlap between the PL emission of HIAM‐4025 and the perovskite's absorption spectrum is relatively minimal, impeding the energy transfer from HIAM‐4025 to the perovskite. Therefore, the HIAM‐4023/HIAM‐4024‐assisted perovskite devices exhibit enhanced EQE via FRET processes, whereas the HIAM‐4025 demonstrates comparable EQE to the pristine. Ultimately, the HIAM‐4023‐assisted perovskite device achieves an enhanced power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 24.22% compared with pristine devices (PCE of 22.06%) and remarkable long‐term stability under ambient conditions and continuous light illumination.

Objectives: To compare the epidemiology and disease patterns of allergic rhinitis (AR) at 2 different altitudes in children aged 6–7 years, and subsequently to compare with and augment data from international studies. Materials and methods: This is a multistage, clustered and stratified random sample study. The study area comprises 2 distinct areas within Yunnan Province, China. Low altitude was represented by Xishuangbanna Prefecture (XB), while high altitude was represented by Diqing Prefecture (DiQ). Each study area was subdivided into 3 sub-areas, and children aged 6–7 years were randomly sampled based on proportion-weighted sampling. The area studied includes the well-known area of Shangri-La city. Questionnaires were distributed and jointly completed by study participants and their parents or guardians, under the guidance of professional medical staff. Results: 2796 valid questionnaires out of 2933 distributed were obtained (survey response rate 95.3%). Land utilization transformation (LUT) is a key factor affecting ecosystem services (ESs). The urban agglomeration on the Northern Slope of the Tianshan Mountains (UATM) is located in a typical arid region with extremely fragile ecological environment. However, the impact of LUT on the spatial pattern of ESs in the region over the past 20 years is not clear. This study aimed to explore LUT characteristics of the urban agglomeration on the UATM using a land transfer matrix, information entropy, land utilization intensity, and land utilization dynamic degree. Various ESs indexes were quantitatively measured using the Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Trade-offs (InVEST) model, and the effect of LUT on ESs was revealed through a geographic detector and spatial auto-correlation analyses. The results of this study led to the following conclusions: First, between 2000 and 2020, the primary land utilization types in UATM were arable land, grassland, and bare land, with significant cross-transformations occurring among these types. Meanwhile, LUT showed marked differences among different regions. LUT changed rapidly and significantly in the central region; in contrast, slower and slight changes were observed in the northern and southern regions. Second, during the research period, habitat maintenance, water yield and carbon sequestration decreased, and the soil retention function increased. The accelerated urban development in the second decade led to more rapid changes in ESs. Finally, both the structure and intensity of land utilization showed the strongest explanatory capability for changes in ESs. Different dimensions of LUT showed significant interactions with ESs. Therefore, it is advisable to guide LUT scientifically, promote vegetation restoration projects, alleviate the impacts of human activities and climate change on ESs, and enhance the ecological safety and environmental sustainability of UATM and even arid regions in Central Asia.

Abstract Introduction Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is characterized by the enlargement of the left ventricle or biventricular, accompanied by myocardial systolic dysfunction. Chlamydia psittacosis (CP) is a zoonotic pathogen, which can cause severe pneumonia, respiratory failure, and acute organ dysfunction. The deterioration of DCM caused by CP infection is extremely rare, and few cases of successful management were reported. Case presentation We reported a 67-year-old male patient with DCM and chronic heart failure. Who was admitted to ICU with severe pneumonia, acute hypoxemic respiratory failure, acute decompensated heart failure, arrhythmia, and cardiogenic shock. Mechanical ventilation (MV) and venous-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO) were established for respiratory and circulatory support. Broncho alveolar lavage fluid(BALF)was collected for culture and metagenomics next-generation sequencing (mNGS) test. Repeated mNGS tests indicated the high possibility of CP pneumonia, thereafter, moxifloxacin and doxycycline were prescribed. After targeted antibiotics and organ support treatment, pneumonia, respiratory and circulatory failure were gradually resolved, patient was successfully weaned from MV and VA-ECMO. Finally, the patient was recovered and discharged alive. Conclusions Severe respiratory and circulatory failure caused by CP infection in DCM patients is a rare life-threatening clinical condition. Early accurate diagnosis, targeted antibiotic therapy, coupled with extracorporeal life support posed positive impact on the patient’s disease course and outcome.

Abstract Objective Prostate cancer (PC) is a significant disease affecting men’s health worldwide. More than 60% of patients over 65 years old and more than 80% are diagnosed with localized PC. The current choice of treatment modalities for localized PC and whether overtreatment is controversial. Therefore, we wanted to construct a nomogram to predict the risk factors associated with cancer-specific survival (CSS) and overall survival (OS) in elderly patients with localized PC while assessing the survival differences in surgery and radiotherapy for elderly patients with localized PC. Methods Data of patients with localized PC over 65 years were obtained from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression models were used to determine independent risk factors for CSS and OS. Nomograms predicting CSS and OS were built using multivariate Cox regression models. The consistency index (C-index), the area under the subject operating characteristic curve (AUC), and the calibration curve were used to test the accuracy and discrimination of the prediction model. Decision curve analysis (DCA) was used to test the potential clinical value of this model. Results A total of 90,434 patients over 65 years and diagnosed with localized PC from 2010 to 2018 were included in the study. All patients were randomly assigned to the training set (n = 63,328) and the validation set (n = 27,106). Univariate and multivariate Cox regression model analysis showed that age, race, marriage, T stage, surgical, radiotherapy, prostate-specific antigen (PSA), and Gleason score (GS) were independent risk factors for predicting CSS in elderly patients with localized PC. Age, race, marriage, surgery, radiotherapy, PSA, and GS were independent risk factors for predicting OS in elderly patients with localized PC. The c-index of the training and validation sets for the predicted CSS is 0.802(95%CI:0.788–0.816) and 0.798(95%CI:0.776–0.820, respectively). The c-index of the training and validation sets for predicting OS is 0.712(95%:0.704–0.720) and 0.724(95%:0.714–0.734). It shows that the nomograms have excellent discriminatory ability. The AUC and the calibration curves also show good accuracy and discriminability. Conclusion We have developed new nomograms to predict CSS and OS in elderly patients with localized PC. After internal validation and external temporal validation with reasonable accuracy, reliability and potential clinical value, the model can be used for clinically assisted decision-making.

Optical satellite networks (OSN) utilizing wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) inter-satellite links (ISLs) and wavelength routing is becoming a new trend in constructing high-speed, large-capacity, and low-latency global network systems. Since the number of wavelength channels for the WDM ISLs is limited, the traffic requests might incur queuing delays due to the wavelength channel congestion. To evaluate the delay-tolerance characterization of dual-layer wavelength routing OSN (DWROSN), the ISLs arrival coefficient (IAC) is proposed to construct the queuing model. Simulation results are compared with theoretical results in terms of queuing length and queuing delays. The results show that the traffic intensity, number of wavelength channels, and node degree of the satellite have an impact on the queuing characterization of the DWROSN. The queuing model with the IAC can efficiently evaluate the queuing characterization of the DWROSN.

Although the reclamation activity could effectively promote the ecological service function of mining areas, the microbiological mechanism of functional reconstruction of reclaimed soil is still unclear. Clarifying how reclamation affects the characteristics, assembly mechanisms, and carbon sequestration functions of soil bacterial communities, is crucial for reshaping the ecological self-sustaining capacity of mining areas. To shed light on this purpose, combined with zero model analysis, MiSeq high-throughput sequencing and qPCR SmartChip technologies were used to explore the assembly processes and carbon sequestration functional variations of soil bacterial community in Dongtan mine area at four reclamation years (reclaimed 9 a, 12 a, 15 a, and 18 a). Abstract Objective This study aims to investigate the experiences of parents who have experienced bereavement in their efforts to preserve memories of their deceased child. Methods Employing a qualitative meta-synthesis approach, this study systematically sought relevant qualitative literature by conducting searches across various electronic databases, including PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Wiley, up until July 2023. Results Nine studies are eligible for inclusion and included in the meta-synthesis. Three overarching categories are identified: (1) Affirming the Significance of Memory Making. (2) Best Practices in Memory Making. (3) Barriers to Effective Memory Making. Conclusion Bereaved parents highly value the act of creating lasting memories, emphasizing its profound significance. While forming these memories, it is imperative to offer family-centered care and honor diverse preferences and needs. It is essential to offer effective support to parents, offering them a range of choices. Furthermore, a more comprehensive examination of memory-making practices is required to better understand their influence on parents’ recollections of their deceased child.

Abstract Background Mitochondrial genome abnormalities can lead to mitochondrial dysfunction, which in turn affects cellular biology and is closely associated with the development of various diseases. The demand for mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequencing has been increasing, and Illumina and MGI are two commonly used sequencing platforms for capture-based mtDNA sequencing. However, there is currently no systematic comparison of mtDNA sequencing performance between these two platforms. To address this gap, we compared the performance of capture-based mtDNA sequencing between Illumina's NovaSeq 6000 and MGI's DNBSEQ-T7 using tissue, peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC), formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue, plasma, and urine samples. Results Our analysis indicated a high degree of consistency between the two platforms in terms of sequencing quality, GC content, and coverage. In terms of data output, DNBSEQ-T7 showed higher rates of clean data and duplication compared to NovaSeq 6000. Conversely, the amount of mtDNA data obtained by per gigabyte sequencing data was significantly lower in DNBSEQ-T7 compared to NovaSeq 6000. In terms of detection mtDNA copy number, both platforms exhibited good consistency in all sample types. When it comes to detection of mtDNA mutations in tissue, FFPE, and PBMC samples, the two platforms also showed good consistency. However, when detecting mtDNA mutations in plasma and urine samples, significant differenceof themutation number detected was observed between the two platforms. For mtDNA sequencing of plasma and urine samples, a wider range of DNA fragment size distribution was found in NovaSeq 6000 when compared to DNBSEQ-T7. Additionally, two platforms exhibited different characteristics of mtDNA fragment end preference. Conclusions In summary, the two platforms generally showed good consistency in capture-based mtDNA sequencing. However, it is necessary to consider the data preferences generated by two sequencing platforms when plasma and urine samples were analyzed.
