Abstract Background Fiberoptic-guided intubation is considered as “gold standard” of difficult airway management. Management of the airway in prone position in patients with severe trauma presenting with penetrating waist and hip injury poses a major challenge to the anesthesiologist. Case presentation A man presented with severe multiple trauma and hemorrhagic shock as a result of an industrial accident with several deformed steel bars penetrating the left lower waist and hip. It was decided to schedule an exploratory laparotomy following extracting the deformed steel bars. Successful administration of awake fiberoptic nasotracheal intubation, performed in a prone position under airway blocks and appropriate sedation, allowed for the procedure. The exploratory laparotomy revealed damage to multiple organs, which were repaired sequentially during a 7-hour surgical operation. The patient’s recovery was uneventful, and he was discharged from the hospital one month after the surgery. Conclusions Awake fiberoptic nasotracheal intubation, along with airway blocks and appropriate sedation, can be a viable option in patients with severe multiple trauma in the prone position.

Inborn errors of metabolism (IEMs) are uncommon. Although some studies have explored the distribution and characteristics of IEMs in newborns, the impact of these disorders on hospitalized newborns remains unclear. In this study, we gathered data from 21,840 newborn patients admitted for various medical conditions at the Children’s Hospital of Chongqing Medical University from January 2017 and December 2022. Liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS), and genetic analysis were used to elucidate the disease spectrum, incidence rate, and genetic characteristics of IEMs in hospitalized newborns. The results revealed that the incidence of IEMs in hospitalized newborns was 1/377 (58/21,840), with a higher incidence in full-term infants (1/428) than in premature infants (1/3,120). Among the diagnosed genetic metabolic diseases, organic acid metabolism disorders (1/662), amino acid metabolism disorders (1/950), and fatty acid oxidation disorders (1/10,920) were the most prevalent. Methylmalonic acidemia (MMA), especially the isolated form, emerged as the most common IEM, while neonatal intrahepatic cholestasis caused by citrin deficiency (NICCD) and ornithine transcarbamylase deficiency (OTCD) were prevalent in premature infants. Of the 58 confirmed cases of IEMs, 72 variants were identified, of which 31.94% (23/72) had not been reported previously. This study contributes to understanding the incidence and clinical features of IEMs in hospitalized newborns, offering more efficient strategies for screening and diagnosing these disorders.

Salinity is one of the primary abiotic stresses that seriously hampers plant quality and productivity. It is feasible to reduce or reverse the negative effects of salt through the supplementation of silicon (Si) and aspartic acid (Asp). However, the question of how exogenous Si and Asp induce salt tolerance in celery remains incipient. Thus, this study was performed to determine the synergistic effects of Si and Asp on the alleviation of salt stress in celery. To this end, the celery plants were cultivated in a controlled regime (light for 14 h at 22 °C; darkness for 10 h at 16 °C) and treated with one of five treatments (CK, 100 mM NaCl, 100 mM NaCl + 75 mg/L Si, 100 mM NaCl + 100 mg/L Asp, and 100 mM NaCl + 75 mg/L Si + 100 mg/L Asp). Results showed that solely NaCl-treated celery plants developed salt toxicity, as characterized by decreased growth, declined photosynthetic ability, disturbed nutritious status and internal ion balance, and a boosted antioxidant defense system (Improved antioxidant enzymes and reduced ROS accumulation). In contrast, these adverse effects of NaCl were ameliorated by the additions of Si and Asp, regardless of Si, Asp, or both. Moreover, the mitigatory impacts of the co-application of Si and Asp on salt stress were more pronounced compared to when one of them was solely applied. Collectively, exogenous Si and Asp alleviate the degree of salt stress and thereby improve the salt tolerance of celery.

INTRODUCTION： With the continuous progress of science and technology, the monitoring and control of oil and gas pipeline networks have become more and more critical; SCADA systems, as a kind of technology widely used in industrial control, play a key role. The screen configuration of the SCADA system is the core part of its user interface, which is directly related to the operator's mastery of the status of the pipeline network. In order to improve the monitoring efficiency and reduce the operation risk, this study is devoted to exploring a new method of SCADA system screen configuration based on the oil and gas pipeline network model. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to develop an innovative SCADA system screen configuration method to present the operating status of the oil and gas pipeline network more intuitively and efficiently. The design based on the pipeline network model aims to enhance the operators' understanding of essential information, such as pipeline network topology, fluid flow, etc., so as to make monitoring and control more intelligent. METHODS: The study adopts a new method of SCADA system screen configuration based on the oil and gas pipeline network model. First, the topology, sensor data, and control nodes of the oil and gas pipeline network are comprehensively modelled. Then, through the design principle of human-computer interaction, the modelling results are integrated into the screen configuration of the SCADA system to realize the intuitive presentation of information. At the same time, advanced visualization technology is introduced so that the operators can understand the real-time changes in the pipe network status more clearly. RESULTS: After experimental verification, the new method shows significant advantages in oil and gas pipeline network monitoring. The operators can recognize the abnormalities of the pipeline network more quickly and accurately through the SCADA system screen configuration, which improves the efficiency of troubleshooting and treatment. The visualized interface design makes the operation more intuitive and reduces the possibility of operating errors, thus improving the safety and reliability of the pipeline network. CONCLUSION: The new method of SCADA system screen configuration based on the oil and gas pipeline network model has achieved significant results in improving monitoring efficiency and reducing operational risks. Through a more intuitive and intelligent interface design, operators can have a more comprehensive understanding of the operating status of the pipeline network, which provides practical support for rapid response and decision-making. This approach introduces new ideas to the field of oil and gas pipeline network monitoring, which is of positive significance for improving the overall performance of the system. Future work can be carried out to optimize the interface design further and expand the applicable scenarios.

Abstract Background C2H2 zinc finger proteins (C2H2-ZFPs), one of the largest transcription factors, play a variety of roles in plant development and growth as well as stress response. While, the evolutionary history and expression profile of the C2H2-ZFP genes in Larix kaempferi (LkZFPs) have not been reported so far. Results In this study, the whole genome of the LkZFPs was identified and characterized, including physicochemical properties, phylogenetic relationships, conservative motifs, the promoter cis-elements and Gene Ontology (GO) annotation. We identified 47 LkZFPs and divided them into four subfamilies based on phylogenetic analysis and conserved motifs. Subcellular localization prediction showed that most of the LkZFPs were located in the nucleus. Promoter cis-element analysis suggested that the LkZFPs may be involved in the regulation of stress responses. Moreover, Real-time quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) results showed that Q-type LkZFP genes were involved in the response to abiotic stress, such as salt, drought and hormone stresses. Subcellular localization results showed that LkZFP7 and LkZFP37 were located in the nucleus, LkZFP32 was located in both cytoplasm and nucleus. Conclusion The identification and functional analysis of LkZFPs suggested that some LkZFP genes might play important roles in coping with both biological and abiotic stresses. These results could further increase understanding of the function of the LkZFPs, and provide some research direction and theoretical support.

Abstract Background Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic metabolic condition that is associated with multiple comorbidities. Apart from pharmacological approaches, patient self‐management remains the gold standard of care for diabetes. Improving patients' self‐management among the elderly with mobile health (mHealth) interventions is critical, especially in times of the COVID‐19 pandemic. However, the extent of mHealth efficacy in managing T2DM in the older population remains unknown. Hence, the present review examined the effectiveness of mHealth interventions on cardiometabolic outcomes in older adults with T2DM. Methods A systematic search from the inception till May 31, 2021, in the MEDLINE, Embase, and PubMed databases was conducted, and 16 randomized controlled trials were included in the analysis. Results The results showed significant benefits on glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) (mean difference −0.24%; 95% confidence interval [CI]: −0.44, −0.05; p = 0.01), postprandial blood glucose (−2.91 mmol/L; 95% CI: −4.78, −1.03; p = 0.002), and triglycerides (−0.09 mmol/L; 95% CI: −0.17, −0.02; p = 0.010), but not on low‐density lipoprotein cholesterol (−0.06 mmol/L; 95% CI: −0.14, 0.02; p = 0.170), high‐density lipoprotein cholesterol (0.05 mmol/L; 95% CI: −0.03, 0.13; p = 0.220), and blood pressure (systolic blood pressure −0.82 mm Hg; 95% CI: −4.65, 3.00; p = 0.670; diastolic blood pressure −1.71 mmHg; 95% CI: −3.71, 0.29; p = 0.090). Conclusions Among older adults with T2DM, mHealth interventions were associated with improved cardiometabolic outcomes versus usual care. Its efficacy can be improved in the future as the current stage of mHealth development is at its infancy. Addressing barriers such as technological frustrations may help strategize approaches to further increase the uptake and efficacy of mHealth interventions among older adults with T2DM.

The strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duch.) “Sulhyang” is a typical seasonal flowering (SF) strawberry that produces flower buds in day lengths shorter than a critical limit (variable, but often defined as CO, FT1, SOC1, and TFL1) participating in light signaling and circadian rhythm in plants are altered under blue light (BL). Sugars for flowering and runnering are mainly produced by photosynthetic carbon assimilation. The intensity of light could affect photosynthesis, thereby regulating flowering and runnering. Here, we investigated the effect of the intensity of supplemental blue light (S-BL) or night-interrupting blue light (NI-BL) in photoperiodic flowering and runnering regulation by applying 4 h of S-BL or NI-BL with either 0, 10, 20, 30, or 40 μmol·m−2·s−1 photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) in a 10 h short-day (SD10) (SD10 + S-BL4 or + NI-BL4 (0, 10, 20, 30, or 40)) or 14 h long-day (LD14) conditions (LD14 + S-BL4 or + NI-BL4 (0, 10, 20, 30, or 40)). Approximately 45 days after the photoperiodic light treatment, generally, whether S-BL or NI-BL, BL (20) was the most promotive in runnering, leading to more runners in both the LD and SD conditions. For flowering, except the treatment LD14 + S-BL, BL (20) was still the key light, either from BL (20) or BL (40), promoting flowering, especially when BL acted as the night-interrupting light, regardless of the photoperiod. At the harvest stage, larger numbers of inflorescences and runners were observed in the LD14 + NI-BL4 treatment, and the most were observed in the LD14 + NI-BL (20). Moreover, the SD10 + NI-BL4 was slightly inferior to the LD14 + NI-BL4 in increasing the numbers of inflorescences and runners, but it caused earlier flowering. Additionally, the circadian rhythm expression of flowering-related genes was affected differently by the S-BL and NI-BL. After the application of BL in LD conditions, the expression of an LD-specific floral activator FaFT1 was stimulated, while that of a flowering suppressor FaTFL1 was inhibited, resetting the balance of expression between these two opposite flowering regulators. The SD runnering was caused by BL in non-runnering SD conditions associated with the stimulation of two key genes that regulate runner formation in the GA pathway, FaGRAS32 and FaGA20ox4. In addition, the positive effects of BL on enhancing photosynthesis and carbohydrate production also provided an abundant energy supply for the flowering and runnering processes.

Proteins containing the homologous E6-AP carboxyl-terminal (HECT) domain are a class of E3 ubiquitin ligases involved in the ubiquitin–proteasome pathway, which plays an irreplaceable role in plant growth, development, and stress resistance. However, a phylogenetic analysis and expression profile of the HECT gene (PtrHECT) in the model plant Populus trichocarpa (Torr. & Gray) have not been reported. In this study, we identified 13 PtrHECT genes using genome-wide analysis, and then these were divided into four groups. The protein interaction networks showed that the PtrHECT protein may interact with PTR6 and participate in ABA signal regulation. Abiotic stress is the main environmental factor limiting plant growth and development. The qRT-PCR results showed that PtrHECT1, 4, 7, 8, and 9 were significantly up-regulated in leaves at each time point under drought stress, and most PtrHECT genes responded to both drought and high salt stress, consistent with their promoter sequence analysis, revealing the presence of an important number of phytohormone-responsive and stress-related cis-regulatory elements. This study provides useful information for further analysis of the functions of the HECT gene family in P. trichocarpa.

Basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) contains abundant nutrients and is considered an economically important edible vegetable. The optimal nutrient levels will increase the productivity and basil quality. However, prominent research on basil regarding the diagnostic nutrient deficiency standard and the corresponding nutrient uptake is still scarce. To this end, the basil plants were hydroponically cultured and subjected to one of 14 nutrient solution treatments, corresponding to the omission of a single nutrient element (designated as -N, -P, -K, -Ca, -Mg, -NH4+, -NO3−, -S, -Fe, -Mn, -B, -Zn, -Mo, and -Cu) and a complete nutrient solution (CS) as the control. The most common nutrient deficiency symptoms were chlorosis, stunted roots and growth, and even leaf necrosis and abscission, in particular of -N, -P, -NO3−, and -Fe. We also found that basil is a NH4+-sensitive species. The photosynthetic capacity (photosynthesis pigments, Fv/Fm ratio, and greenness index) was disturbed to varying degrees when a single nutrient was omitted from the nutrient solution. Additionally, the omission of a specific single nutrient confers significant differences in the tissue nutrients, regardless of the macronutrients and micronutrients considered. Concomitantly, multivariate analysis suggested the correlations among certain important nutrients were distinctly different under different treatments (correlation analysis); the influences of different nutrient deficiencies on the tissue nutrient concentrations showed similarity (principal component analysis). Collectively, the growth, physiological, and biochemical changes studied in this trial not only improved our knowledge for diagnosing nutrient deficiency symptoms for practical cultivation but also provided a comprehensive understanding of the internal nutrient associations in basil.

IntroductionAlthough waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) has established association with cardiometabolic disease, the trend of changes in elevated WHtR among general population have not been examined adequately.MethodsThis study examined the prevalence of elevated WHtR and waist circumference (WC) and their trends over time using Joinpoint regression models among adults who participated in the United States National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (U.S. NHANES) 1999–2018. We performed weighted logistic regression to identify the association between central obesity subtypes and the prevalence of comorbidities, including diabetes, chronic kidney disease, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and cancer.ResultsThe prevalence of elevated WHtR has increased from 74.8% in 1999–2000 to 82.7% in 2017–2018 while elevated WC also increased from 46.9% in 1999–2000 to 60.3% in 2017–2018. Men, older adults, former smokers, and people with lower education levels were more likely to have elevated WHtR. A total of 25.5% of American adults had normal WC but elevated WHtR, and they had a significantly higher chance of suffering from diabetes (odds ratio [OR] = 2.06 [1.66, 2.55]), hypertension (OR = 1.75 [1.58, 1.93]) and CVD (OR = 1.32 [1.11, 1.57]).DiscussionIn conclusion, the burden of elevated WHtR and WC have been increasing among U.S. adults throughout the years, and the changes have been more significant across most subgroups. It is also notable that approximately a quarter of the population had normal WC but elevated WHtR, which had increased likelihood of having cardiometabolic diseases, especially diabetes. Future clinical practices should pay more attention to this subgroup of the population with overlooked health risks.

Establishing reliable early warning models for severe dengue cases is a high priority to facilitate triage in dengue-endemic areas and optimal use of limited resources. However, few studies have identified the complex interactive relationship between potential risk factors and severe dengue. This research aimed to assess the potential risk factors and detect their high-order combinative effects on severe dengue. A structured questionnaire was used to collect detailed dengue outbreak data from eight representative hospitals in Dhaka, Bangladesh, in 2019. Logistic regression and machine learning models were used to examine the complex effects of demographic characteristics, clinical symptoms, and biochemical markers on severe dengue. A total of 1,090 dengue cases (158 severe and 932 non-severe) were included in this study. Dyspnoea (Odds Ratio [OR] = 2.87, 95% Confidence Interval [CI]: 1.72 to 4.77), plasma leakage (OR = 3.61, 95% CI: 2.12 to 6.15), and hemorrhage (OR = 2.33, 95% CI: 1.46 to 3.73) were positively and significantly associated with the occurrence of severe dengue. Classification and regression tree models showed that the probability of occurrence of severe dengue cases ranged from 7% (age >12.5 years without plasma leakage) to 92.9% (age ≤12.5 years with dyspnoea and plasma leakage). The random forest model indicated that age was the most important factor in predicting severe dengue, followed by education, plasma leakage, platelet, and dyspnoea. The research provides new evidence to identify key risk factors contributing to severe dengue cases, which could be beneficial to clinical doctors to identify and predict the severity of dengue early.

Compared to the traditional production of ginseng roots, Panax ginseng sprouts (PGSs) are currently regarded as a substitute due to the relatively short-term culture but still high nutrition. However, the optimal light intensity for the growth ability of PGSs and the characterizations of the responses of PGSs to the light intensity have been largely neglected. This study aimed to determine the influences of the light intensity on the growth, morphogenesis, and photosynthetic responses in PGSs. To this end, two-year-old ginseng rootlets were subjected to one of six light intensities (from 30 to 280 PPFD with 50 PPFD intervals) in a plant factory with artificial lighting (PFAL) via LED light for 10 weeks. On the whole, the recorded parameters of the PGSs showed gradually decreasing trends in response to the increasing light intensities. However, the 80 PPFD-treated PGSs possessed similar or greater root dry weights, leaf areas, carotenoids levels, and photosynthesis (the maximal PSII quantum yield) compared to those in the 30 PPFD regime. Additionally, photoinhibition symptoms as evidenced by chlorosis, necrosis, and stunted growth were observed as the light intensity attained 180 PPFD. Thus, 130 PPFD could be considered a safe point for the appearance of photoinhibition in PGSs. Taken together, we show that the light intensity range of 30–80 PPFD is suitable for maximizing the production of PGSs in PFALs.

Cryopreservation is considered the safe and efficient strategy for the long-term conservation of embryogenic cultures. The objective of this study was to cryopreserve the embryogenic tissues of hybrid larch to overcome the result raised by rapid growth rates of conifer embryogenic cultures necessitating frequent sub-culturing. We systematically evaluated several parameters, including the pre-culture method (liquid or solid), osmoprotectant type (DMSO, sucrose, or PEG6000), duration of cryoprotection (1–3 h), and thawing temperature (4 °C, 25 °C, or 40 °C). After one month of cryopreservation, we assessed the regeneration efficiency and maturation ability of both cryo-preserved and non-cryopreserved tissues. Our optimized protocol involves pre-culturing embryonic tissue on the solid medium with 0.4 M sorbitol for 48 h, followed by treatment with 10% DMSO, 0.4 M sucrose, and 15% PEG6000 for 1 h on ice, and immersion in liquid nitrogen with rapid thawing at 40 °C. Notably, the use of solid media during pre-culturing was crucial to enhancing the success rate of cryopreservation. Using protocol optimization, we achieved high embryogenic tissue survival rates of over 80% without affecting the ability of somatic embryogenesis. This work provides a comprehensive set of steps for routine cryopreservation of embryogenic tissues for long-term conservation in hybrid larch, along with sample protocols for cryopreservation of larch. The results demonstrate that vitrification is a reliable method for preserving embryogenic tissues of hybrid larch with broader implications for the cryopreservation of other plant species. Further optimization and standardization of protocols across different species would ensure the preservation of genetic diversity and facilitate future research in plant biotechnology that benefits human health, food security, and environmental sustainability.

Nowadays, not only the roots, but also leaves and flowers of ginseng are increasingly popular ingredients in supplements for healthcare products and traditional medicine. The cultivation of the shade-loving crop, ginseng, is very demanding in terms of the light environment. Along with the intensity and duration, light direction is another important factor in regulating plant morphophysiology. In the current study, three lighting directions—top (T), side (S), or top + side (TS)—with an intensity of 30 ± 5 μmol·m−2·s−1 photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) were employed. Generally, compared with the single T lighting, the composite lighting direction, TS, was more effective in shaping the ginseng with improved characteristics, including shortened, thick shoots; enlarged, thick leaves; more leaf trichomes; earlier flower bud formation; and enhanced photosynthesis. The single S light resulted in the worst growth parameters and strongly inhibited the flower bud formation, leading to the latest flower bud observation. Additionally, the S lighting acted as a positive factor in increasing the leaf thickness and number of trichomes on the leaf adaxial surface. However, the participation of the T lighting weakened these traits. Overall, the TS lighting was the optimal direction for improving the growth and development traits in ginseng. This preliminary research may provide new ideas and orientations in ginseng cultivation lodging resistance and improving the supply of ginseng roots, leaves, and flowers to the market.

Panax ginseng sprouts (PGS) have the advantage of requiring short-term cultivation while maintaining higher ginsenoside contents than traditional ginseng seedlings. It is feasible to improve their yield capacity by manipulating physical factors such as temperature and light. This study therefore investigated the effects of the DIF (difference between day and night temperature) and LI (light intensity) on the growth and photosynthetic characteristics of PGS. To this end, four DIF treatments (18/22 °C, 20/20 °C, 22/22 °C, 22/18 °C), corresponding to two LI regimes (20 PPFD, 200 PPFD), were applied on one-year-old ginseng rootlets in closed-type plant production systems (CPPSs). The PGS had distinctly different responses to the eight treatments. In particular, we found that negative DIF considerably hampered the growth and development of roots, shoots, leaves, and photosynthesis, regardless of the LI considered. The PGS treated with 20/20 °C combined with 20 PPFD displayed the best root growth, shoot development, leaf area, as well as optimal photosynthetic ability. On the other hand, we further showed that the root growth rate was positively correlated with the stem diameter, leaf traits, and photosynthetic ability, whereas it was negatively correlated with the petiole length, stem length, and shoot length. Collectively, 20/20 °C combined with 20 PPFD was the optimal condition in the current study, and may be regarded as a successful strategy for large-scale productions of PGS.

Although previous studies have examined the hepatotoxicity of single metal exposure, the associations between metal mixture and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) or fibrosis remain unclear. This study investigated the associations of urinary metal mixture with the risks of NAFLD and liver fibrosis in US adults using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2017.01 to 2020.03. Vibration-controlled transient elastography was used to detect the controlled attenuation parameter (CAP) and liver stiffness measurement (LSM), which are indicators of NAFLD and liver fibrosis respectively. Three novel mixture modeling approaches including the Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR), weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression and quantile g-computation (qgcomp) were used to estimate the associations of the urinary fourteen-metal mixture with Ln CAP and Ln LSM. There were 2283 adults aged over 18 years (1209 women and 1074 men) were included. Among women, urinary metal mixture was positively associated with Ln CAP in the BKMR and qgcomp models (both P 0.05). The metal mixture was not associated with Ln LSM in the three models regardless of genders (all P > 0.05). In conclusion, we observed sex-specific associations between urinary metal mixture and the prevalence of NAFLD in US adults. These findings emphasize the role of environmental heavy metal exposure in the development of NAFLD, and confirm the need for more prospective cohort studies on sex-specific manner.

The photoreceptor-mediated photoperiodic sensitivity determines the obligate short-day flowering in chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum morifolium Ramat.) when the night length is longer than a critical minimum, otherwise, flowering is effectively inhibited. The reversal of this inhibition by subsequent exposure to a short period of supplemental (S) or night-interruptional (NI) blue (B) light (S-B; NI-B) indicates the involvement of B light-received photoreceptors in the flowering response. Flowering is mainly powered by sugars produced through photosynthetic carbon assimilation. Thus, the light intensity can be involved in flowering regulation by affecting photosynthesis. Here, it is elucidated that the intensity of S-B or NI-B in photoperiodic flowering regulation of chrysanthemums by applying 4-h of S-B or NI-B with either 0, 10, 20, 30, or 40 μmol·m−2·s−1 photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) in a 10-h short-day (SD10) [SD10 + 4B or + NI-4B (0, 10, 20, 30, or 40)] or 13-h long-day (LD13) condition [LD13 + 4B or + NI-4B (0, 10, 20, 30, or 40)] provided by 300 ± 5 μmol·m−2·s−1 PPFD white (W) LEDs. After 60 days of photoperiodic light treatments other than the LD13 and LD13 + NI-4B (40), flowering with varying degrees was observed, although the SD10 gave the earliest flowering. And the LD13 + 4B (30) produced the greatest number of flowers. The flowering pattern in response to the intensity of S-B or NI-B was consistent as it was gradually promoted from 10 to 30 μmol m−2 s−1 PPFD and inhibited by 40B regardless of the photoperiod. In SD conditions, the same intensity of S-B and NI-B did not significantly affect flowering, while differential flowering inhibition was observed with any intensity of NI-B in LDs. Furthermore, the 30 μmol·m−2·s−1 PPFD of S-B or NI-B up-regulated the expression of floral meristem identity or florigen genes, as well as the chlorophyll content, photosynthetic efficiency, and carbohydrate accumulation. The 40B also promoted these physiological traits but led to the unbalanced expression of florigen or anti-florigen genes. Overall, the photoperiodic flowering in response to the intensity of S-B or NI-B of the SDP chrysanthemum suggests the co-regulation of photosynthetic carbon assimilation and differential photoreceptor-mediated control.

NF-YB, a subfamily of Nuclear Factor Y (NF-Y) transcription factor, play crucial role in many biological processes of plant growth and development and abiotic stress responses, and they can therefore be good candidate factors for breeding stress-resistant plants. However, the NF-YB proteins have not yet been explored in Larix kaempferi, a tree species with high economic and ecological values in northeast China and other regions, limiting the breeding of anti-stress L. kaempferi. In order to explore the roles of NF-YB transcription factors in L. kaempferi, we identified 20 LkNF-YB family genes from L. kaempferi full-length transcriptome data and carried out preliminary characterization of them through series of analyses on their phylogenetic relationships, conserved motif structure, subcellular localization prediction, GO annotation, promoter cis-acting elements as well as expression profiles under treatment of phytohormones (ABA, SA, MeJA) and abiotic stresses (salt and drought). The LkNF-YB genes were classified into three clades through phylogenetic analysis and belong to non-LEC1 type NF-YB transcription factors. They have 10 conserved motifs; all genes contain a common motif, and their promoters have various phytohormones and abiotic stress related cis-acting elements. Quantitative real time reverse transcription PCR (RT-qPCR) analysis showed that the sensitivity of the LkNF-YB genes to drought and salt stresses was higher in leaves than roots. The sensitivity of LKNF-YB genes to ABA, MeJA, SA stresses was much lower than that to abiotic stress. Among the LkNF-YBs, LkNF-YB3 showed the strongest responses to drought and ABA treatments. Further protein interaction prediction analysis for LkNF-YB3 revealed that LkNF-YB3 interacts with various factors associated with stress responses and epigenetic regulation as well as NF-YA/NF-YC factors. Taken together, these results unveiled novel L. kaempferi NF-YB family genes and their characteristics, providing the basic knowledge for further in-depth studies on their roles in abiotic stress responses of L. kaempferi.

Intelligent compaction (IC) technology have been used for quality control and quality assurance (QC/QA) in subgrade construction. The effective regression correlations between Intelligent Compaction Measurement Values (ICMV) and In-situ Measurement Values (ISMV, including compaction degree and subgrade modulus ELWD) are the essential prerequisite of using IC technology for QC/QA. This paper presents the results from an experimental research study that was conducted from a practical subgrade project of China to explore the regression relationships between ICMV and ISMV. Three types of ICMV, including CMV, CCV and Evib, were collected along with the corresponding positions of the rollers. Two types of ISMV, containing compaction degree and ELWD, were measured by ring sampler method and light weight deflectometer (LWD) at specified test points, respectively. Based on these data, the influences of roller parameters and subgrade properties on the regression relationships of ICMV and ISMV were investigated. In addition, linear regression and 5 nonlinear regression algorithms were compared. The results suggest that ICMV reflect the stiffness of subgrade more than reflecting the density. In the regression of ICMV and ISMV, subgrade properties are more important than roller parameters while both of them should not be neglected. The influences of underlying stiffness and roller amplitude are linear while that of roller speed and moisture content are nonlinear. Nonlinear algorithms, especially the random forest, have the better performance compared to linear algorithm. Moreover, the combination of random forest and linear algorithm can further improve the accuracy of ISMV prediction.

Ammonium (NH4+) toxicity hinders the cabbage yield because most subspecies or varieties exhibit extreme sensitivity to NH4+. Current knowledge indicates that silicon (Si) can alleviate or reverse the ammonium toxicity severity. However, few investigations have been conducted on NH4+-stressed cabbage to elucidate the mechanism underlying the Si alleviation. The study described herein analyzes induced physio-chemical changes to explore how Si helps mitigate NH4+ toxicity. We applied one of three NH4+:NO3- ratios (0:100, 50:50, and 100:0) at a constant N (13 meq·L−1) to the cabbage plants, corresponding with two Si treatment levels (0 and 1.0 meq·L−1). Chlorosis and foliage necrosis along with stunted roots occurred following 100% NH4+ application were ameliorated in the presence of Si. The NH4+ toxicity ratio was reduced accordingly. Similarly, inhibition on the uptake of K and Ca, restricted photosynthesis (chlorophyll, stomatal conductance, and Fv/Fm), and accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS, O2·-, and H2O2), as well as lipid peroxidation (MDA, malondialdehyde) in NH4+-stressed cabbages were mitigated with added Si. The lower observed oxidative stresses in solely NH4+-treated plants were conferred by the boosted antioxidant enzymes (SOD, superoxide dismutase; CAT, catalase). Concomitantly, Si-treated plants showed higher activities of key NH4+ assimilation enzymes (GS, glutamine synthetase; GOGAT, glutamate synthase; NADH-GDH, glutamate dehydrogenase) and NH4+ content in leaves. However, excessive NH4+ assimilations cause the acidic stress, which has been demonstrated to be the primary cause of NH4+ toxicity. Therefore, further investigation regarding the Si effects on H+ regulation and distribution should be warranted.

Abstract Background In an enhanced recovery after surgery program, a growing number of orthopedists are reconsidering the necessity of tourniquet use in total knee arthroplasty (TKA). However, the impact of tourniquet use on transfusion rate and postoperative length of stay (PLOS) in TKA remains controversial. Therefore, we carried out a study to investigate the effect of tourniquet application in routine primary TKA on transfusion rate and PLOS. Methods We analyzed data from 6325 patients who underwent primary unilateral TKA and divided them into two groups according to whether a tourniquet was applied during the procedure, and a tourniquet was used in 4902 and not used in 1423. The information for transfusion and PLOS was extracted from patients’ electronic health records, and the data were analyzed with logistic and linear regression analyses. Results Following TKA, the transfusion rate and PLOS were 14.52% and 7.72 ± 3.54 days, respectively, in the tourniquet group, and 6.47% and 6.44 ± 3.48 days, respectively, in the no-tourniquet group. Abstract The access control is used to ensure these data security when WSN (wireless sensor network) with a large number of base stations transmits huge amount of data to a data center server. Meanwhile big data systems are used to efficiently store, manage, and use data from large-scale WSNs. In big data systems for WSNs, the traditional access control technology will greatly affect the system performance. This paper first analyzes the data processing flow of the traditional access control strategy in big data systems, analyzes its time complexity, and explores how it affects system performance. Then, we propose the big data security access control algorithm based on memory index acceleration in WSNs which has better performance over the traditional ones. In our experiments, under the same test environment and security strategy, the performance has been greatly improved with the proposed algorithm.

In eukaryotes, alternative splicing (AS) is a crucial regulatory mechanism that modulates mRNA diversity and stability. The contribution of AS to stress is known in many species related to stress, but the posttranscriptional mechanism in poplar under cold stress is still unclear. Recent studies have utilized the advantages of single molecular real-time (SMRT) sequencing technology from Pacific Bioscience (PacBio) to identify full-length transcripts. We, therefore, used a combination of single-molecule long-read sequencing and Illumina RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq) for a global analysis of AS in two poplar species (Populus trichocarpa and P. ussuriensis) under cold stress. We further identified 1,261 AS events in P. trichocarpa and 2,101 in P. ussuriensis among which intron retention, with a frequency of more than 30%, was the most prominent type under cold stress. RNA-Seq data analysis and annotation revealed the importance of calcium, abscisic acid, and reactive oxygen species signaling in cold stress response. Besides, the low temperature rapidly induced multiple splicing factors, transcription factors, and differentially expressed genes through AS. In P. ussuriensis, there was a rapid occurrence of AS events, which provided a new insight into the complexity and regulation of AS during cold stress response in different poplar species for the first time.

The flowering of chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum morifolium Ramat.), inhibited by long-day lighting, can be reversed with a short period of low supplemental blue light (S-BL). Both flowering and the reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging processes are primarily driven by sugars created by photosynthetic carbon assimilation. In addition, the antioxidant ability potentially affects flowering in photoperiod- and/or circadian rhythm-dependent manners. This indicates that there is an interactive relationship among blue (B) light, photosynthetic efficiency, sugar accumulation, and antioxidant ability in flowering regulation. Here, 4 h of 30 μmol·m−2·s−1 photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) S-BL was applied at the end of a 13-h long-day period (LD13 + 4B) at different intervals during 60 days of experimental duration. The five experimental groups were named according to the actual number of days of S-BL and their intervals: applied once every day, “60 days-(LD13 + 4B) (100.0%)”; once every other day, “30 days-(LD13 + 4B) (50.0%)”; once every three days, “15 days-(LD13 + 4B) (25.0%)”; once every five days, “10 days-(LD13 + 4B) (16.7%)”; and once every seven days, “7 days-(LD13 + 4B) (11.7%)”. Two non-S-BL control groups were also included: 60 10-h short days (60 days-SD10) and 13-h long days (60 days-LD13). At the harvest stage, varying degrees of flowering were observed except in “60 days-LD13” and “7 days-(LD13 + 4B) (11.7%)”. The number of flowers increased and the flower buds appeared earlier as the proportion of S-BL days increased in LD13 conditions, although the “60 days-SD10” gave the earliest flowering. The proportion of initial, pivotal, and optimal flowering was 16.7% (“10 days-(LD13 + 4B)”), 50.0% (“30 days-(LD13 + 4B)”), and 100.0% (“60 days-(LD13 + 4B)”), respectively. Meanwhile, a series of physiological parameters such as the production of enzymatic or non-enzymatic antioxidants, chlorophyll content, photosynthetic efficiency, enzyme activities, and carbohydrate accumulation were significantly improved by “30 days-(LD13 + 4B) (50.0%)” as a turning point until the peaks appeared in “60 days-(LD13 + 4B) (100.0%)”, as well as the expression of florigenic or anti-florigenic and some antioxidant-synthetic genes. Furthermore, the results of principal component analysis (PCA) indicated that S-BL days positively regulated flowering, photosynthesis, carbohydrate accumulation, and antioxidant production. In aggregate, the pivotal and optimal proportions of S-BL days to reconcile the relationship among flowering, photosynthetic carbon assimilation, and antioxidant ability were 50.0% and 100.0%, respectively. However, there are still significant gaps to be filled in order to determine the specific involvement of blue light and antioxidant abilities in flowering regulation.

As a commercial high-grade cut flower, the marketability of herbaceous peony (Paeonia lactiflora Pall.) is limited by its short vase life in water. Si (silicon) is an alternative to improve the postharvest life of cut flowers. However, the effects of the combined application of Si and preservatives on the postharvest performance of cut peony flowers are unknown. In this study, the effects of a Si application and a preservative alone and collegial on the longevity of the vase life, water loss, antioxidant defense system, and stock carbohydrates level of cut flowers of three peony cultivars were investigated. It was observed that Si effectively prolonged the vase life, while the preservative alone, to a lesser extent, but markedly induced an early flowering and a greater flower diameter (flower open degree). The simultaneous use of Si and the preservatives not only showed larger flowers, but also improved the postharvest performance as characterized by an extended vase life and delayed the water loss. In addition, the Si supplementation dramatically intensified the antioxidant defense system (ameliorated antioxidant enzymes and alleviated ROS accumulation) in petals but did not increase the stock carbohydrates (starch and soluble sugars) levels, as compared to the treatment with the preservative alone. We show that a Si supplementation to a preservative is highly recommended for a large-scale use to promote the postharvest performance and competitiveness of marketed cut flowers.

Deep learning is widely used in vision tasks, but feature extraction of IR small targets is difficult due to the inconspicuous contours and lack of color information. This paper proposes a new convolutional neural network–based (CNN-based) method for IR small target detection called DRUNet. The algorithm is divided into two parts: the feature extraction network and the prediction head. For the small IR targets, which are difficult to accurately label, Gaussian soft labels are added to supervise the training process and make the network converge faster. We use a simplified object keypoint similarity to evaluate the network accuracy by the ratio of the distance to the radius of the inner tangent circle of the target box and a fair method for evaluating the model inference speed after GPU preheating. The experimental results show that our proposed algorithm performs better when compared with commonly used algorithms in the field of small target detection. The model size is 10.5 M, and the test speed reaches 133 FPS under the RTX3090 experimental platform.

Despite continuous growth in dietary pattern research, the relative importance of each dietary component in the overall pattern and their joint effects on mortality risk have not been examined adequately. We explored the individual and joint associations of multiple food groups with all-cause and cause-specific mortality (cardiovascular disease (CVD) or cancer), by analyzing data from a cohort of 3995 Hong Kong Chinese older adults in the Mr. Osteoporosis (OS) and Ms. OS Study. Cox proportional hazards models were used to examine the associations of food groups with mortality risk. The individual and joint contribution of food groups to mortality risk has been quantified by a machine learning approach, i.e., the Quantile G-Computation. When comparing the highest with the lowest quartile of intake, dark green and leafy vegetables (hazard ratio (HR) = 0.82, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.70 to 0.96, Ptrend = 0.049), fruit (HR = 0.79, 95% CI = 0.68 to 0.93, Ptrend = 0.006), legumes (HR = 0.75, 95% CI = 0.63 to 0.87, Ptrend = 0.052), mushroom and fungi (HR = 0.76, 95% CI = 0.65 to 0.88, Ptrend = 0.023), soy and soy products (HR = 0.77, 95% CI = 0.66 to 0.90, Ptrend = 0.143), and whole grains (HR = 0.76, 95% CI = 0.65 to 0.89, Ptrend = 0.008) were inversely associated with all-cause mortality. Legume intake was associated with a lower risk of CVD mortality, while fruit, nuts, soy and soy products were associated with a lower risk of cancer mortality. From the Quantile G-Computation, whole grains, legumes, fruits, mushroom and fungi, soy and soy products had a higher relative weighting on mortality risk, and the joint effect of food groups was inversely associated with the mortality risk due to all-causes (HR = 0.39, 95% CI = 0.27 to 0.55), CVD (HR = 0.78, 95% CI = 0.67 to 0.91), and cancer (HR = 0.31, 95% CI = 0.15 to 0.65). From a sex-stratified analysis, most associations between food groups (whole grains, legumes, fruits, mushroom and fungi, soy and soy products) and mortality risk remained significant among men. In conclusion, whole grains, legumes, fruits, mushroom and fungi, soy and soy products were the main contributors to a reduction in mortality risk, and their joint effects were stronger than individual food groups. Moreover, the sex-specific association of sweets and desserts with cancer mortality may be worth further investigation.

Selenium (Se) remains to have an inconsistent relationship with glycemic biomarkers and the risk of developing type 2 diabetes (T2D). Few studies have investigated the relationship between blood Se and glycemic biomarkers among people with normoglycemia. We conducted a cross-sectional analysis using the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2013–2016. Multivariable linear regression models were developed to examine the associations of blood Se with glycemic biomarkers, namely, fasting plasma glucose (FPG), hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), insulin, and the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). Blood Se was treated as continuous (per log-10 increment) and categorical exposure (in quartiles) in separate regression models. We assessed the dose–response relationships by restricted cubic spline analysis. After excluding the participants with T2D or incomplete data, 2706 participants were analyzed. The highest quartile of blood Se was associated with increased FPG [adjusted β = 0.12, 95% Confidence Intervals (CI) = 0.04, 0.20], OGTT (adjusted β = 0.29, 95% CI = 0.02, 0.56), HbA1c (adjusted β = 0.04, 95% CI = 0.00, 0.07), and insulin (adjusted β = 2.50, 95% CI = 1.05, 3.95) compared with the lowest quartile. Positive associations were also observed between every log-10 increment of blood Se level and glycemic biomarkers, except for OGTT. A positive linear dose–response relationship existed between blood Se and FPG (Poverall = 0.003, Pnonlinear = 0.073) and insulin (Poverall = 0.004, Pnonlinear =0.060). BMI, age, and smoking status modified the associations of the highest quartile of Se (compared with the lowest quartile) with glycemic biomarkers. Overall, positive associations of blood Se with glycemic biomarkers were observed among U.S. adults with normoglycemia. These findings implied that people with normoglycemia need to be aware of the level of Se and other mineral intakes from diet and supplements. Further research is required to identify the mechanisms of excess Se in the progression of diabetes.

Ammonium (NH4+) toxicity seriously hampers the yield and quality of salvia plants because most varieties or sub-species are highly sensitive to NH4+. Silicon (Si) is an alternative that is used to minimize these disturbances and maintain better growth under NH4+ toxicity. Nevertheless, the mitigatory effects of Si on NH4+-stressed salvia are unknown. Therefore, this study was carried out to determine how Si assists to alleviate the NH4+ toxicity degree in salvia. To this end, salvia plants were cultivated in a controlled environment supplied with a constant N (nitrogen) level (13 meq·L−1) in the form of three NH4+:NO3− ratios (0:100, 50:50, 100:0), each with (1.0 meq·L−1) or without Si. Physiological disorders and typical NH4+ toxicity symptoms, as well as interrupted photosynthesis, were observed in the 100% NH4+-treated plants. Furthermore, cation uptake inhibition and oxidative damage were also imposed by the 100% NH4+ supply. In contrast, in the presence of Si, the NH4+ toxicity degree was attenuated and plant growth was ensured. Accordingly, the NH4+ toxicity appearance ratio decreased significantly. Furthermore, Si-treated plants showed an ameliorated photosynthetic ability, elevated internal K and Ca levels, and enhanced antioxidative capacity, as reflected by improved major antioxidant enzyme activities, as well as diminished accumulation of ROS (reactive oxygen species) and MDA (malondialdehyde). Our findings enlightened the agronomic importance of additional Si to nutrient solutions, especially pertaining to bedding plants at risk of NH4+ toxicity.

This paper presents a polarized random Fourier feature kernel least-mean-square algorithm that aims to overcome the dimension curve of the random Fourier feature kernel least-mean-square (RFFKLMS) algorithm. RFFKLMS is an effective nonlinear adaptive filtering algorithm based on the kernel approximation technique. However, random samples drawn from the distribution need more dimensions to achieve better-generalized performance because they are independent of the training data. To overcome this weakness, a kernel polarization method is adopted to optimize the random samples. Polarized random Fourier features demonstrate a clear advantage over a method without using the polarization method. The experimental results in the context of Lorenz time series prediction and channel equalization verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Kalanchoe (Kalanchoe blossfeldiana) is a qualitative short-day plant with a high aesthetic value. When the night length is less than a specified cultivar-dependent critical value, however, it does not develop flowers. This study investigated the effects of low-intensity supplementary or night interrupting (NI) blue (B) light on the plant performance and flower induction in kalanchoe ‘Rudak’. During the photoperiod in a closed-type plant factory with day/night temperatures of 23 °C/18 °C, white (W) LEDs were utilized to produce a photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) of 300 μmol m−2 s−1, and B LEDs were used to give supplementary/NI light at a PPFD of 10 μmol m−2 s−1. The control plants were exposed to a 10-h short day (SD, positive control) or a 13-h long day (LD, negative control) treatment without any B light. The B light was used for 4 h either (1) to supplement the W LEDs at the end of the SD (SD + 4B) and LD (LD + 4B), or (2) to provide night interruption (NI) in the SD (SD + NI-4B) and LD (LD + NI-4B). The LD + 4B and LD + NI-4B significantly enhanced plant growth and development, followed by the SD + 4B and SD + NI-4B treatments. In addition, the photosynthesis, physiological parameters, and activity of antioxidant systems were improved in those treatments. Except in the LD and LD + NI-4B, all plants flowered. It is noteworthy that kalanchoe ‘Rudak’ flowered in the LD + 4B treatment and induced the greatest number of flowers, followed by SD + NI-4B and SD + 4B. Plants grown in the LD + 4B treatment had the highest expression levels of certain monitored genes related to flowering. The results indicate that a 4-h supplementation of B light during the photoperiod in both the SD and LD treatments increased flower bud formation, promoted flowering, and enhanced plant performance. Kalanchoe ‘Rudak’ flowered especially well in the LD + 4B, presenting a possibility of practically inducing flowering in long-day seasons with B light application.

Growing evidence supports the associations of metal exposures with risk of type 2 diabetes (T2D), but the methodological limitations overlook the complexity of relationships within the metal mixtures. We identified and estimated the single and combined effects of urinary metals and their interactions with prevalence of T2D among 3078 participants in the NHANES 2011–2016. We analyzed 15 urinary metals and identified eight metals by elastic-net regression model for further analysis of the prevalence of T2D. Bayesian kernel machine regression and the weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression models identified four metals that had greater importance in T2D, namely cobalt (Co), tin (Sn), uranium (U) and strontium (Sr). The overall OR of T2D was 1.05 (95% CI: 1.01–1.08) for the positive effects and 1.00 (95% CI: 0.98–1.02) for the negative effect in the WQS models. We observed positive (Poverall = 0.008 and Pnon-linear = 0.100 for Co, Poverall = 0.011 and Pnon-linear = 0.138 for Sn) and inverse (Poverall = 0.001, Pnon-linear = 0.209 for Sr) linear dose–response relationships with T2D by restricted cubic spline analysis. Both additive and multiplicative interactions were found in urinary Sn and Sr. In conclusion, urinary Co, Sn, U and Sr played important roles in the development of T2D. The levels of Sn might modify the effect of Sr on T2D risk.

The application of drought stress-regulating transcription factors (TFs) offers a credible way to improve drought tolerance in plants. However, many drought resistant TFs always showed unintended adverse effects on plant growth or other traits. Few studies have been conducted in trees to evaluate and overcome the pleiotropic effects of drought tolerance TFs. Here, we report the dose-dependent effect of the Limonium bicolor LbDREB6 gene on its overexpression in Populus ussurensis. High- and moderate-level overexpression of LbDREB6 significantly increased drought tolerance in a dose-dependent manner. However, the OE18 plants showed stunted growth under normal conditions, but they were also more sensitive to Marssonina brunnea infection than wild type (WT) and OE14 plants. While, OE14 showed normal growth, the pathogen tolerance of them was not significantly different from WT. Many stress-responsive genes were up-regulated in OE18 and OE14 compared to WT, especially for OE18 plants. Meanwhile, more pathogen tolerance related genes were down-regulated in OE18 compared to OE14 and WT plants. We achieved improved drought tolerance by adjusting the increased levels of exogenous DREB genes to avoid the occurrence of growth reduction and reduced disease tolerance.

The ammonium (NH4+) tolerance of plants is an important issue in agriculture, associated with several plant characteristics. So far, plant tissue acidification has been shown as the primary cause of NH4+ toxicity. Suppressed plant growth caused by excess NH4+ can be counteracted by potassium (K+) application. However, the effects of NH4+ tolerances on the differences regarding pH changes together with K+ uptake remain to be determined. Here, we performed an 84 h hydroponic cultivation of five species with different NH4+ tolerances, subjected to three NH4+:NO3− solutions (0:100, 50:50, or 100:0), to investigate the pH changes and ion uptakes. Consequently, the solution pH was lowered over time to varying extents in the presence of NH4+. The NH4+-tolerant ageratum and lettuce, shown to be tolerant to NH4+ in this trial, rapidly lowered the solution pH, whereas extremely NH4+-sensitive salvia and cabbage only gave a minor decrease in the solution pH when grown with 100:0 NH4+:NO3−. Additionally, the increased external NH4+ level led to a substantial decline in the net cation influxes (K+, Ca2+, and Mg2+). As compared to solely NH4+-fed salvia and cabbage, solely NH4+-fed ageratum and lettuce ultimately showed a relatively greater net K+ influx. Taken together, this study discusses how the decreases in pH and K+ are related to NH4+ tolerance in five hydroponically cultured species.

Plant disease and insect pests are major limiting factors that reduce crop production worldwide. The ornamental indoor cultivation cash crop dwarf coffee Punica arabica ‘Pacas’ is also troubled by these issues. Silicon (Si) is one of the most abundant elements in the lithosphere and positively impacts plant health by effectively mitigating biotic and abiotic stresses. Several studies have shown that Si activates plant defense systems, although the specific nature of the involvement of Si in biochemical processes that lead to resistance is unclear. In our study, Si significantly promoted the growth and development of dwarf coffee seedlings grown in plant growth chambers. More than that, through natural infection, Si suppressed disease and insect pests by improving physiology (e.g., the strong development of the internal structures of roots, stems, and leaves; higher photosynthetic efficiency; more abundant organic matter accumulation; the promotion of root activity; the efficient absorption and transfer of mineral elements; and various activated enzymes) and up-regulating defense genes (CaERFTF11 and CaERF13). Overall, in agriculture, Si may potentially contribute to global food security and safety by assisting in the creation of enhanced crop types with optimal production as well by mitigating plant disease and insect pests. In this sense, Si is a sustainable alternative in agricultural production.

In this study, we characterized the gene expression profile in the roots of Populus ussuriensis at 0, 6, 12, 24, 48 and 120 h after the start of polyethylene glycol (PEG)-induced drought stress using PacBio single-molecule real-time sequencing (SMRT-seq) and Illumina RNA sequencing. Compared to the control, 2244 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified, and many of these DEGs were associated with the signal transduction, antioxidant system, ion accumulation and drought-inducing proteins. Changes in certain physiological and biochemical indexes, such as antioxidant activity and the contents of Ca2+, proline, and total soluble sugars, were further confirmed in P. ussuriensis roots. Furthermore, most of the differentially expressed transcription factors were members of the AP2/ERF, C2H2, MYB, NAC, C2C2 and WRKY families. Additionally, based on PacBio SMRT-seq results, 5955 long non-coding RNAs and 700 alternative splicing events were identified. Our results provide a global view of the gene expression profile that contributes to drought resistance in P. ussuriensis and meaningful information for genetic engineering research in the future.

Although cadmium (Cd) exposure has been declining in the United States (U.S.) over the years, the level of exposure for people with pre-existing comorbidities is unclear. This study characterized the trends of blood Cd levels (bCd) (n = 44,498) and urinary Cd levels (uCd) (n = 15,107) by pre-existing comorbidities among adults participating in the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. We calculated age- and sex-standardized annual geometric mean (GM) levels, and used aJoinpoint regression model to examine the trends over time. The GM levels of bCd declined from 1999–2000 to 2017–2018 survey cycles (from 0.49 to 0.33 μg/L), while women and current smokers had higher levels. Participants with comorbidities had higher bCd and declined over time: cardiovascular disease (CVD) (0.50 to 0.42 μg/L), hypertension (0.49 to 0.35 μg/L), chronic kidney disease (CKD) (0.54 to 0.37 μg), and cancer (0.57 to 0.38 μg) versus those without these comorbidities. We observed the similar pattern of changes for uCd and participants with CVD, CKD, and cancer had higher levels. To conclude, the trend in urinary and blood Cd levels in U.S adults decreased in the past 20 years, and the levels varied by sex, smoking status, and comorbidities.

Light is a critical environmental factor that influences plant growth and development, ranging from seed germination to flowering and fruiting. This study was carried out to explore how the optimal combination of various lighting directions increases the light usage efficiency and influences the plant morphophysiology, by investigating the plant growth parameters, leaf anatomy, epidermal morphology, stomatal properties, chlorophyll content, key physiological changes, and correlated gene expressions. In closed-type plant growth chambers, rooted cuttings of two chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum morifolium Ramat.) cultivars, “Pearl Egg” and “Gaya Glory”, were subjected to a 10-h photoperiod with 600 μmol∙m−2·s−1 photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) provided by light-emitting diodes (LEDs) in each light-direction combination (top (1/1) (T), top (1/2) + side (1/2) (TS), top (1/2) + bottom (1/2) (TB), side (1/2) + bottom (1/2) (SB), and top (1/3) + side (1/3) + bottom (1/3) (TSB)). The TS lighting significantly enhanced the morphophysiological performance, compared to the other lighting direction combinations. Notably, the excellent branch formation and earlier flowering were induced by the TS lighting in both “Pearl Egg” and “Gaya Glory” plants.

Ammonium is a paradoxical nutrient because it is more metabolically efficient than nitrate, but also causes plant stresses in excess, i.e., ammonium toxicity. Current knowledge indicates that ammonium tolerance is species-specific and related to the ammonium assimilation enzyme activities. However, the mechanisms underlying the ammonium tolerance in bedding plants remain to be elucidated. The study described herein explores the primary traits contributing to the ammonium tolerance in three bedding plants. Three NH4+:NO3− ratios (0:100, 50:50, 100:0) were supplied to salvia, petunia, and ageratum. We determined that they possessed distinct ammonium tolerances: salvia and petunia were, respectively, extremely sensitive and moderately sensitive to high NH4+ concentrations, whereas ageratum was tolerant to NH4+, as characterized by the responses of the shoot and root growth, photosynthetic capacity, and nitrogen (amino acid and soluble protein)-carbohydrate (starch) distributions. An analysis of the major nitrogen assimilation enzymes showed that the root GS (glutamine synthetase) and NADH-GDH (glutamate dehydrogenase) activities in ageratum exhibited a dose-response relationship (reinforced by 25.24% and 6.64%, respectively) as the NH4+ level was raised from 50% to 100%; but both enzyme activities were significantly diminished in salvia. Besides, negligible changes of GS activities monitored in leaves revealed that only the root GS and NADH-GDH underpin the ammonium tolerances of the three bedding plants.

In this work, we aimed to prepare graphene with high concentration ( C _G ) or quality (indicated by I _D / I _G ) by sonication-assisted exfoliation in aqueous sulfonated asphalt (SAS) solution. The highest C _G can reach 0.181 mg ml ^−1 , while the smallest I _D / I _G is only 0.331 in the investigated range. Meanwhile, we observed that C _G and I _D / I _G changed in the opposite trend with the increase of SAS concentration, and reached their extreme values simultaneously. This was attributed to SAS’s agglomeration-induced redistribution of total energy absorbed by graphite between exfoliation and crushing. In actual engineering applications, inevitable noise seriously affects the accuracy of fault diagnosis for rotating machinery. To effectively identify the fault classes of rotating machinery under noise interference, an efficient fault diagnosis method without additional denoising procedures is proposed. First, a one-dimensional deep residual shrinkage network, which directly takes the raw vibration signals contaminated by noise as input, is developed to realize end-to-end fault diagnosis. Then, to further enhance the noise immunity of the diagnosis model, the first layer of the model is set to a wide convolution layer to extract short time features. Moreover, an adaptive batch normalization algorithm (AdaBN) is introduced into the diagnosis model to enhance the adaptability to noise. Experimental results illustrate that the fault diagnosis model for rotating machinery based on one-dimensional deep residual shrinkage network with a wide convolution layer (1D-WDRSN) can accurately identify the fault classes even under noise interference.

Plants grow better when they are supplied with a combination of ammonium (NH4+) and nitrate (NO3−) than when either one is supplied as the sole N (nitrogen) source. However, the effects of N forms on N metabolism and major N assimilation enzymes in different plants, especially vegetables, are largely neglected. This study was conducted on two plants with distinct NH4+ tolerances to compare the responses of two popular leafy vegetables, Korean cabbage (Brassica campestris L.) ‘Ssamchu’ and lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) ‘Caesar green’, to the N source. To this end, plant growth and quality, photosynthesis, carbohydrate, N contents (in the forms of NO3−, NO2−, NH4+, total protein), and key N assimilation-related enzyme (NR, NIR, GS, GDH) activities were investigated. When plants were subjected to one of three NH4+:NO3− regimes, 0:100, 50:50, or 100:0, lettuce was relatively more tolerant while cabbage was extremely sensitive to high NH4+. Both plants benefited more from being grown with 50:50 NH4+:NO3−, as evidenced by the best growth performance, ameliorated photosynthesis, and enriched carbohydrate (C) stock content. In addition, as compared to cabbage, the GS and GDH activities were reinforced in lettuce in response to an increasing external NH4+ level, resulting in low NH4+ accumulation. Our findings suggested that boosting or maintaining high GS and GDH activities is an important strategy for the ammonium tolerance in vegetables.

The significant effects of lighting on plants have been extensively investigated, but research has rarely studied the impact of different lighting directions for the strawberry plant. To understand the optimal lighting direction for better growth and development, this study investigated how strawberries respond to variations in the lighting direction to help fine-tune the growth environment for their development. We examined how the lighting direction affects plant morphophysiology by investigating plant growth parameters, leaf anatomy, epidermal cell elongation, stomatal properties, physiological characteristics, and expressions of runner induction-related genes (FaSOC1 and FaTFL1) and gibberellin (GA) biosyntheses-related genes (FaGA20ox2 and FaGA20ox4). In closed-type plant factory units, the rooted cuttings of strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duch.) ‘Suhlyang’ were subjected to a 10-h photoperiod with a 350 μmol∙m−2∙s−1 photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) provided by light-emitting diodes (LEDs) from three directions relative to the plants: top, side, and bottom. Our results demonstrated that the side lighting profoundly promoted not only morphophysiology, but also runner formation, by upregulating photosynthesis in strawberries. Side lighting can bring commercial benefits, which include reduced economic costs, easier controllability, and harmlessness to plants. This will help provide new insights for the propagation of the most commonly cultivated strawberries in South Korea.

In closed-type plant factory units, the rooted cuttings of two chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum morifolium Ramat.) cultivars, ‘Gaya Glory’ and ‘Pearl Egg’, were subjected to a 10 h photoperiod with a 300 μmol∙m−2∙s−1 photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) provided by light-emitting diodes (LEDs) from three directions relative to the plant including the top, side, and bottom. Compared to the top or bottom lighting, the side lighting greatly enhanced the plant growth, improved the leaf internal structure and chloroplast arrangement, induced small stomata with a higher density, and promoted stomatal opening, which is associated with an increased stomatal conductance and photosynthetic efficiency. It is worth noting that the side lighting significantly enhanced the induction of branching and flowering for both cultivars., The plants grown with side lighting consistently exhibited the greatest physiological performance. We conclude that the lighting direction had a profound effect on the morphophysiological characteristics of chrysanthemum, and that side lighting dramatically promoted their growth and development, especially in their branching and flowering.

Larix olgensis Henry is an important coniferous species found in plantation forests in northeastern China, but it is vulnerable to pathogens. Nitric oxide (NO) is an important molecule involved in plant resistance to pathogens. To study the regulatory role of NO at the transcriptional level, we characterized the transcriptomic response of L. olgensis seedlings to sodium nitroprusside (SNP, NO donor) using Illumina sequencing and de novo transcriptome assembly. A significant number of putative metabolic pathways and functions associated with the unique sequences were identified. Genes related to plant pathogen infection (FLS2, WRKY33, MAPKKK, and PR1) were upregulated with SNP treatment. This report describes the potential contribution of NO to disease resistance in L. olgensis as induced by biotic stress. Our results provide a substantial contribution to the genomic and transcriptomic resources for L. olgensis, as well as expanding our understanding of the involvement of NO in defense responses at the transcriptional level.

Aiming at the fault diagnosis issue of rotating machinery, a novel method based on the deep learning theory is presented in this paper. By combining one-dimensional convolutional neural networks (1D-CNN) with self-normalizing neural networks (SNN), the proposed method can achieve high fault identification accuracy in a simple and compact architecture configuration. By taking advantage of the self-normalizing properties of the activation function SeLU, the stability and convergence of the fault diagnosis model are maintained. By introducing α -dropout mechanism twice to regularize the training process, the overfitting problem is resolved and the generalization capability of the model is further improved. The experimental results on the benchmark dataset show that the proposed method possesses high fault identification accuracy and excellent cross-load fault diagnosis capability.

Populus ussuriensis Kom. is one of the most important tree species for forest renewal in the eastern mountainous areas of Northeast China due to its fast growth, high yield, and significant commercial and ecological value. The selection of optimal reference genes for the normalization of qRT-PCR data is essential for the analysis of relative gene expression. In this study, fourteen genes were selected and assessed for their expression stability during abiotic stress (drought, high salinity, and cold stress) and after the treatment with the drought-related hormone ABA. Three algorithms were used, geNorm, NormFinder, and BestKeeper, and a comprehensive ranking of candidate reference genes was produced based on their output. The most appropriate reference genes were UBQ10 and RPL24 for drought and ABA treatment, UBQ10 and TUB3 for cold stress, and UBQ10 and 60S rRNA for high salinity. Overall, UBQ10 was the most stable reference gene for use as an internal control, whereas PP2A was the least stable. The expression of two target genes (P5CS2 and GI) was used to further verify that the selected reference genes were suitable for gene expression normalization. This work comprehensively assesses the stability of reference genes in Populus ussuriensis and identifies suitable reference genes for normalization during qRT-PCR analysis.

A novel failure prediction method of the rotating machinery is presented in this paper. Firstly, the complete ensemble empirical mode decomposition with adaptive noise (CEEMDAN) is applied to decompose the vibration signals of the rotating machinery into a number of intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) and a residual (Res), and the metric of maximal information coefficient (MIC) is used to select eligible IMFs to reconstruct signals. Then, the approximate entropy (ApEn)-weighted energy value of the reconstructed signals are calculated to track the degradation process of the rotating machinery. Furthermore, the Chebyshev inequality is introduced to determine the prediction starting time (PST). Finally, the auto regress (AR) model and unscented Kalman filter (UKF) algorithm are used to predict the remaining useful life (RUL) of the rotating machinery. The method is fully evaluated in a test-to-failure experiment. The obtained results show that the proposed method outperforms its counterparts on failure prediction of the rotating machinery.

Robust small target detection of low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is very important in infrared search and track applications for self-defense or attacks. Due to the complex background, current algorithms have some unsolved issues with false alarm rate. In order to reduce the false alarm rate, an infrared small target detection algorithm based on saliency detection and support vector machine was proposed. Firstly, we detect salient regions that may contain targets with phase spectrum Fourier transform (PFT) approach. Then, target recognition was performed in the salient regions. Experimental results show the proposed algorithm has ideal robustness and efficiency for real infrared small target detection applications.
