Abstract Background Patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) are highly susceptible to malnutrition, and while enteral nutrition via nasogastric tube is the preferred method, there is a risk of inadvertent reflux and aspiration. Therefore, clinicians have turned to nasointestinal tubes (NET) for enteral nutrition as an alternative option. But the precise localization of NET presents an ongoing challenge. We proposed an innovative approach to provide a valuable reference for clinicians involved in NET placement. Method Data were obtained retrospectively from the medical records of adult patients with a high risk of aspiration or gastric feeding intolerance who had a NET placed in the ICU of Zhejiang Provincial People’s Hospital between October 1, 2017, and October 1, 2023. The collected data were subjected to statistical analysis using SPSS and R software. Result There were 494 patients who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The first-pass success rate was 81.4% (n = 402). The success of a patient’s initial NET placement was found to be associated with Angle SPC and Distance CP, as determined by univariate analysis (25.6 ± 16.7° vs. 41.9 ± 18.0°, P

With the development of coal mine intelligence and the application of coal mine robots, an efficient collaboration between coal mine operators and coal mine robots plays a crucial role in the execution of complex underground tasks. To optimize the complex operational relationship of multiple coal mine operators and multiple robots, based on the concept of digital twin and extensive experience in the XR field, the research is conducted on the design and key technologies of XR intelligent operation and maintenance system for complex collaborative tasks involving multiple humans and multiple robots in coal mines. Firstly, for a typical scenario of collaboration between two types of coal mine operators (i.e central control operators and field control operators) and two types of coal mine robots (i.e. detection robots and operating robots) in complex tasks, the overall system architecture is designed. The system is divided into three parts: the physical subsystem, VR operation and maintenance subsystem, and AR operation and maintenance subsystem. The content, functions, and collaborative operation relationships among these three parts are introduced. Then, an analysis of key technologies related to the VR operation and maintenance subsystem, AR operation and maintenance subsystem, and communication networking is carried out. The solutions corresponding to each key technology are discussed, and the integration and operation of the two types of coal mine operators, two types of coal mine robots, and VR/AR operation and maintenance subsystem are implemented. Finally, a laboratory environment simulating complex underground conditions is set up to create a test site, where the task points and specific tasks are defined. The feasibility and effectiveness of the system are tested and verified. The experimental results show that the coal mine XR intelligent operation and maintenance system is able to function in collaborative situations between multiple humans and multiple robots corresponding to different complex tasks. Through the collaborative operation of the VR operation and maintenance subsystem and the AR operation and maintenance subsystem, the collaborative perception, decision-making, and control between virtual space and physical space can be achieved. This allows for the iterative optimization and verification of complex tasks in a physical space from a virtual space, forming an intelligent operational mode of human-human, human-robot, and robot-robot interactive collaboration.

Abstract Inflammation, caused by accumulation of inflammatory cytokines from immunocytes, is prevalent in a variety of diseases. Electro-stimulation emerges as a promising candidate for inflammatory inhibition. Although electroacupuncture is free from surgical injury, it faces the challenges of imprecise pathways/current spikes, and insufficiently defined mechanisms, while non-optimal pathway or spike would require high current amplitude, which makes electro-stimulation usually accompanied by damage and complications. Here, we propose a neuromorphic electro-stimulation based on atomically thin semiconductor floating-gate memory interdigital circuit. Direct stimulation is achieved by wrapping sympathetic chain with flexible electrodes and floating-gate memory are programmable to fire bionic spikes, thus minimizing nerve damage. A substantial decrease (73.5%) in inflammatory cytokine IL-6 occurred, which also enabled better efficacy than commercial stimulator at record-low currents with damage-free to sympathetic neurons. Additionally, using transgenic mice, the anti-inflammation effect is determined by β2 adrenergic signaling from myeloid cell lineage (monocytes/macrophages and granulocytes).

The application of solar steam generation in seawater desalination is an effective way to solve the shortage of fresh water resources. At present, many kinds of photothermal conversion materials have been developed and used as evaporators in seawater desalination. However, some evaporators need additional thermal insulation or water supply devices to achieve efficient photothermal conversion. In addition, their complex, time consuming and no scalable preparation process, high cost of raw materials and poor salt resistance hinder the practical application of these evaporator. Owing to its distinctive nanoporous structure, diatomite as fossilized single-cells algae diatoms is a promising natural silica-based material for seawater desalination. They are taken from sea and that makes true sense to use them in the sea. Herein, we report the first example of synthesis robust three-dimensional (3D) natural-diatomite composite by assembling polyaniline nanoparticles covered diatomite into the polyvinyl alcohol pre-treated melamine foam frameworks and demonstrate its application as new evaporator for seawater desalination. The porous framework does not only improve the sunlight scattering efficiency, but also offer large network of channels for water transportation. The inherent mechanism behind salt desalination process involves the absorption of water molecules on the surface of the internal silica micro-nano pores, and evaporation under the heat induced by the polyaniline absorbed sunlight. Meanwhile, the metal ions are segregated by many available pores and channels to achieve the self-desalting effect. The developed evaporator possesses the superiority of multi-stage pore structure, strong hydrophilicity, low thermal conductivity, excellent light absorption, fast water transportation and salt-resistant crystallization as well as good durability. The evaporation rate without an additional device is found to be 1.689 kg m−2 h−1 under 1-Sun irradiation, and the energy conversion efficiency is as high as 95%. This work creates a platform and develops the prospect of employing green and sustainable natural-diatomite composite evaporator for practical applications of seawater desalination.

There is a close relationship between potassium (K) and nitrogen (N). However, the roles of K under high N conditions remain unclear. Using a hydroponics approach, we monitored the morphological, physiological, and molecular changes in M9T337 apple (Malus domestica) rootstocks under different nitrate (10 and 30 mmol·L−1 NO3−) and K supply (0.5, 6, 10, and 20 mmol·L−1 K+) conditions. Results revealed that high nitrate inhibited the root growth of M9T337 rootstocks, downregulated the expressions of K transporter genes (MdPT5, MdHKT1, and MdATK1), and reduced the net NO3− and K+ influx at the surface of roots, thereby resulting in an N/K imbalance in rootstocks. Further investigation showed that 10 mmol·L−1 K increased the activity of N metabolic enzymes (NR, GS, NiR, and GOGAT), upregulated the expressions of genes related to nitrate uptake and transport (MdNRT1.1, MdNRT1.2, MdNRT1.5, and MdNRT2.4), promoted 15N transport from the roots to the shoots, optimized leaf N distribution, and improved photosynthetic N utilization efficiency under high nitrate conditions. These results suggest that the negative effects of high nitrate may be related to the N/K imbalance and that reducing N/K in plants by increasing K supply level can effectively alleviate the inhibition of N assimilation by high nitrate stress.

Abstract High‐density neural recordings with superior spatiotemporal resolution powerfully unveil cellular‐scale neural communication, showing great promise in neural science, translational medicine, and clinical applications. To achieve such, many design and fabrication innovations enhanced the electrode, chip, or both for biocompatibility improvement, electrical performance upgrade, and size miniaturization, offering several thousands of recording sites. However, an enormous gap exists along the trajectory toward billions of recording sites for brain scale resolution, posing many more design challenges. This review tries to find possible insight into mitigating the gap by discussing the latest progress in high‐density electrodes and chips for neural recordings. It emphasizes the design, fabrication, bonding techniques, and in vivo performance optimization of high‐density electrodes. It discusses the promising opportunities for circuit‐level and architecture‐level multi‐channel chip design innovations. We expect that joint effort and close collaboration between high‐density electrodes and chips will pave the way to high‐resolution neural recording tools supporting cutting‐edge neuroscience discoveries and applications.

Abstract Real‐time telemedicine detection can solve the problem of the shortage of public medical resources caused by the coming aging society. However, the development of such an integrated monitoring system is hampered by the need for high‐performance sensors and the strict‐requirement of long‐distance signal transmission and reproduction. Here, a bionic crack‐spring fiber sensor (CSFS) inspired by spider leg and cirrus whiskers for stretchable and weavable electronics is reported. Trans‐scale conductive percolation networks of multilayer graphene around the surface of outer spring‐like Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fibers and printing Ag enable a high sensitivity of 28475.6 and broad sensing range over 250%. The electromechanical changes in different stretching stages are simulated by Comsol to explain the response mechanism. The CSFS is incorporated into the fabric and realized the human‐machine interactions (HMIs) for robot control. Furthermore, the 5G Narrowband Internet of Things (NB‐IoT) system is developed for human healthcare data collection, transmission, and reproduction together with the integration of the CSFS, illustrating the huge potential of the approach in human–machine communication interfaces and intelligent telemedicine rehabilitation and diagnosis monitoring.

Abstract Background The rapid global emergence and spread of carbapenem-resistant Gram-negative bacilli (CR-GNB) is recognized as a major public health concern, and there are currently few effective treatments for CR-GNB infection. The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical characteristics and outcomes of patients with CR-GNB infections treated with ceftazidime/avibactam (CAZ/AVI) combined with colistin from October 2019 to February 2023 in China. Methods A total of 31 patients with CR-GNB infections were retrospectively identified using the electronic medical record system of Zhejiang Provincial People's Hospital. Results Thirty-one patients were treated with CAZ/AVI combined with colistin. Respiratory tract infections (87%) were most common. The common drug-resistant bacteria encompass Klebsiella pneumonia (54.8%), Acinetobacter baumannii (29.0%), and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (16.1%). The 30-day mortality rate was 29.0%, and the 7-day microbial clearance rate was 64.5%. The inflammatory marker CRP changes, but not PCT and WBC, were statistically significant on days 7 and 14 after combination therapy. There were seven patients developing acute renal injury (AKI) after combination therapy and treating with continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT). Two patients developed diarrhea. Conclusion The combination of CAZ/AVI and colistin has potential efficacy in patients with CR-GNB infection, but more studies are needed to determine whether it can reduce 30-day mortality rates and increase 7-day microbial clearance. At the same time, the adverse reactions of combination therapy should not be ignored.

Abstract Bacterial cellulose (BC), a natural biomaterial synthesized by bacteria, has a unique structure of a cellulose nanofiber-weaved three-dimensional reticulated network. BC films can be ultrasoft with sufficient mechanical strength, strong water absorption and moisture retention and have been widely used in facial masks. These films have the potential to be applied to implantable neural interfaces due to their conformality and moisture, which are two critical issues for traditional polymer or silicone electrodes. In this work, we propose a micro-electrocorticography (micro-ECoG) electrode named “Brainmask”, which comprises a BC film as the substrate and separated multichannel parylene-C microelectrodes bonded on the top surface. Brainmask can not only guarantee the precise position of microelectrode sites attached to any nonplanar epidural surface but also improve the long-lasting signal quality during acute implantation with an exposed cranial window for at least one hour, as well as the in vivo recording validated for one week. This novel ultrasoft and moist device stands as a next-generation neural interface regardless of complex surface or time of duration.

The artificial nitrogen (N2) reduction reaction (NRR) via electrocatalysis is a newly developed methodology to produce ammonia (NH3) at ambient conditions, but faces the challenges in N2 activation and poor reaction selectivity. Herein, Nb-based MXenes are developed to remarkably enhance the NRR activity through the engineering of the stretched 3D structure and oxygen vacancies (VO). The theoretical studies indicate that N2 could be initially adsorbed on VO with an end-on configuration, and the potential determining step might be the first hydrogenation step. The catalysts achieve an NH3 production rate of 29.1 μg h−1 mgcat−1 and excellent Faradic efficiency of 11.5%, surpassing other Nb-based catalysts. The selectivity of NRR is assigned to the unique structure of the catalysts, including (1) the layered graphitic structure for fast electron transfer and active site distribution, (2) the reactive VO for N2 adsorption and activation, and (3) the expanded interlayer space for mass transfer.

Piezoelectric materials play an increasingly important role in energy harvesters, sensors, and actuators. Flexible and thin piezoelectric films have been demonstrated to provide advanced functionalities and improved performances. However, the research on flexible inorganic piezoelectric thin films has rarely been systematically summarized. Here, we summarize the recent advances in the flexible inorganic piezoelectric thin films, focusing on their structural designs, fabrication techniques, and applications in various practical scenarios. Specifically, different fabrication techniques suitable for diverse inorganic piezoelectric nanostructures are reviewed, including sol–gel, hydrothermal, electrospinning, and other techniques, and the integration process with flexible substrates is further discussed. Biomedical and industrial applications of the flexible piezoelectric thin films are emphasized. Finally, some existing challenges and future perspectives are discussed.

Piezoelectric ultrasonic transducers have shown great potential in biomedical applications due to their high acoustic-to-electric conversion efficiency and large power capacity. The focusing technique enables the transducer to produce an extremely narrow beam, greatly improving the resolution and sensitivity. In this work, we summarize the fundamental properties and biological effects of the ultrasound field, aiming to establish a correlation between device design and application. Focusing techniques for piezoelectric transducers are highlighted, including material selection and fabrication methods, which determine the final performance of piezoelectric transducers. Numerous examples, from ultrasound imaging, neuromodulation, tumor ablation to ultrasonic wireless energy transfer, are summarized to highlight the great promise of biomedical applications. Finally, the challenges and opportunities of focused ultrasound transducers are presented. The aim of this review is to bridge the gap between focused ultrasound systems and biomedical applications.

Abstract Implantable brain–computer interface (BCI) devices are an effective tool to decipher fundamental brain mechanisms and treat neural diseases. However, traditional neural implants with rigid or bulky cross-sections cause trauma and decrease the quality of the neuronal signal. Here, we propose a MEMS-fabricated flexible interface device for BCI applications. The microdevice with a thin film substrate can be readily reduced to submicron scale for low-invasive implantation. An elaborate silicon shuttle with an improved structure is designed to reliably implant the flexible device into brain tissue. The flexible substrate is temporarily bonded to the silicon shuttle by polyethylene glycol. On the flexible substrate, eight electrodes with different diameters are distributed evenly for local field potential and neural spike recording, both of which are modified by Pt-black to enhance the charge storage capacity and reduce the impedance. The mechanical and electrochemical characteristics of this interface were investigated in vitro. In vivo, the small cross-section of the device promises reduced trauma, and the neuronal signals can still be recorded one month after implantation, demonstrating the promise of this kind of flexible BCI device as a low-invasive tool for brain–computer communication.

Abstract Background and objectives: Bloodstream infection (BSI) is a life-threatening condition in critically ill patients, but pathogen quantification techniques during treatment are laborious. This study aimed to explore the impact of monitoring pathogen DNA load changes and polymicrobial infection in blood by droplet digital polymerase chain reaction (ddPCR) on the prognosis of patients with BSIs. Methods This prospective case series study was conducted in the general intensive care unit of the Zhejiang Provincial People’s Hospital and included patients with BSIs from May 2020 to January 2021. Pathogens DNA load and presence of polymicrobial BSIs were dynamically monitored by ddPCR. Results Sixteen patients with BSIs proven by blood culture were recruited (87.5% men; mean age, 69.3 ± 13.7 years). All pathogens identified by blood culture were Gram-negative bacteria, among which seven were multidrug-resistant strains. The 28-day mortality rate was 62.5%. Symmetrical solid oxide fuel cells (S-SOFCs) are prepared via a facile one-step co-sintering method with highly reactive Sm0.2Ce0.8O1.9 (SDC) electrolyte and Sr2Fe1.5Mo0.5O6-δ (SFM) electrodes. The phase compositions and microstructures are studied by XRD, TEM, and FESEM techniques, and the electrolyte-supported single cells with gas-tight SDC electrolyte and porous SFM-SDC electrode are prepared after one-step co-sintering at 1100 °C or higher temperatures for 4 h. In particular, the AC impedance spectra reveal that the SDC electrolyte sintered at 1200 °C exhibits the highest oxide ionic conductivity of ~35 mS/cm at 700 °C, while the electrode polarization resistance achieves the lowest value of 0.32 Ω·cm2 at 700 °C in air for the sample co-sintered at 1100 °C. Accordingly, the output measurements are carried out on the single cells co-sintered at 1100 °C and 1200 °C. It is found that the single cell co-sintered at 1200 °C possesses the highest peak power density of 216 mW/cm2 at 700 °C, demonstrating the potential application of the one-step co-sintering method in low-cost manufacturing of S-SOFCs.

IntroductionBoth nitrogen (N) and magnesium (Mg) play important roles in biochemical and physiological processes in plants. However, the application of excessive N and insufficient Mg may be the factor leading to low nitrogen utilization rate (NUE) and fruit quality degradation in apple production.MethodsIn this study, we analyzed the effects of different application rates of Mg (0, 50, 100, 150, 200 kg/ha) on the photosynthetic nitrogen use efficiency (PNUE), the accumulation and distribution of carbon (C), N metabolism, anthocyanin biosynthesis and fruit quality of the ‘Red Fuji’ apple in 2018 and 2019.ResultsThe results showed that the application of Mg significantly increased the 15NUE and increased the allocation rate of 15N in the leaves whereas the 15N allocation rate in the perennial organs and fruits was decreased. With the increase in Mg supply, the activities of N metabolism enzymes (NiR, GS, and GOGAT) were significantly promoted and the content of intermediate products in N metabolism (NO2−, NH4+, and free amino acid) was significantly decreased. Furthermore, an appropriate rate of Mg significantly promoted the net photosynthetic rate (Pn) and photosynthetic nitrogen use efficiency (PNUE), enhanced the enzyme activities of C metabolism (SS, SPS, S6PDH), and increased the contents of sorbitol and sucrose in leaves. In addition, Mg upregulated the gene expression of sugar transporters (MdSOT1, MdSOT3, MdSUT1, and MdSUT4) in fruit stalk and fruit fresh; 13C isotope tracer technology also showed that Mg significantly increased the 13C allocation in the fruits. Mg also significantly increased the expression of anthocyanin biosynthesis genes (MdCHS and MdF3H) and transcription factors (MdMYB1 and MdbZIP44) and the content of anthocyanin in apple peel.ConclusionThe comprehensive analysis showed that the appropriate application of Mg (150 kg/ha) promoted PNUE, C–N metabolism, and anthocyanin biosynthesis in apple trees.

Previous studies have determined that magnesium (Mg) in appropriate concentrations prevents plants from suffering from abiotic stress. To better understand the mechanism of Mg alleviation of aluminum (Al) stress in apple, we investigated the effect of Mg on plant growth, photosynthetic fluorescence, antioxidant system, and carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) metabolism of apple seedlings under Al toxicity (1.5 mmol/L) via a hydroponic experiment. Al stress induced the production of reactive oxygen in the leaves and roots and reduced the total dry weight (DW) by 52.37 % after 20 days of treatment relative to plants grown without Al, due to hindered photosynthesis and alterations in C and N metabolism. By contrast, total DW decreased by only 11.07 % in the Mg-treated plants under Al stress. Supplementation with 3.0 mmol/L Mg in the Al treatment decreased Al accumulation in the apple plants and reduced Al-induced oxidative damage by enhancing the activity of antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, catalase, and peroxidase) and reducing the production of H2O2 and malondialdehyde (MDA). Under Al stress, the Mg-treated plants showed a 46.17 % higher photosynthetic rate than the non-treated plants. Supplementation with Mg significantly increased the sucrose content by increasing sucrose synthase (SS) and sucrose-phosphate synthase (SPS) activities. Moreover, Mg facilitated the transport of 13C-carbohydrates from the leaves to roots. Regarding N metabolism, the nitrate reductase (NR), glutamine synthase (GS), and glutamate synthase (GOGAT) activities in the roots and leaves of the Mg-treated plants were significantly higher than those of the non-treated plants under Al stress. Compared with the non-treated plants under Al stress, the Mg-treated plants exhibited a significantly high level of NO3- and soluble protein content in the leaves, roots, and stems, but a low level of free amino acids. Furthermore, Mg significantly improved nitrogen accumulation and enhanced the transport of 15N from the roots to leaves. Overall, our results revealed that Mg alleviates Al-induced growth inhibition by enhancing antioxidant capacity and C-N metabolism in apple seedlings.

In this paper, we present a soft and moisturizing film electrode based on bacterial cellulose and Ag/AgCl conductive cloth as a potential replacement for gel electrode patches in electroencephalogram (EEG) recording. The electrode materials are entirely flexible, and the bacterial cellulose membrane facilitates convenient adherence to the skin. EEG signals are transmitted from the skin to the bacterial cellulose first and then transferred to the Ag/AgCl conductive cloth connected to the amplifier. The water in the bacterial cellulose moisturizes the skin continuously, reducing the contact impedance to less than 10 kΩ, which is lower than commercial gel electrode patches. The contact impedance and equivalent circuits indicate that the bacterial cellulose electrode effectively reduces skin impedance. Moreover, the bacterial cellulose electrode exhibits lower noise than the gel electrode patch. The bacterial cellulose electrode has demonstrated success in collecting α rhythms. When recording EEG signals, the bacterial cellulose electrode and gel electrode have an average coherence of 0.86, indicating that they have similar performance across different EEG bands. Compared with current mainstream conductive rubber dry electrodes, gel electrodes, and conductive cloth electrodes, the bacterial cellulose electrode has obvious advantages in terms of contact impedance. The bacterial cellulose electrode does not cause skin discomfort after long-term recording, making it more suitable for applications with strict requirements for skin affinity than gel electrode patches.

A bionic artificial compound eye manufactured on a concave mold with precision engraving method for imaging, which allows for the rapid fabrication of large-scale compound eyes at a low cost. Thousands of concave structures are accurately machined and positioned omnidirectionally in concentric rings with a minimum diameter of 100 μm on a hemisphere. The PDMS ommatidia can be obtained once replicated, which can greatly improve preparation efficiency, and the peel-off process can also be optimized by alcohol ultrasonic without edge damage. The optical performance and field of view of the artificial compound eye are also investigated, and the experimental results are around 120°. Furthermore, the combination of the prepared compound eye and the commercial CMOS camera successfully captures images of different shapes.

To explore the versatility of speakers, a piezoelectric micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) speaker combining the function of a silent alarm is proposed, which mainly comprises a lead zirconate titanate (PZT) actuation layer and a rigid–flexible coupling supporting layer. Measurements performed on encapsulated prototypes mounted to an artificial ear simulator have revealed that, compared to a speaker with a rigid supporting layer, the sound pressure level (SPL) of the proposed piezoelectric MEMS speaker with a rigid–flexible coupling supporting layer is significantly higher and is especially higher by 4.1–20.1 dB in the frequency range from 20 Hz to 4.2 kHz, indicating that the rigid–flexible coupling supporting layer can improve the SPL significantly in low frequency. Moreover, the spectral distribution characteristic of its playback audio is similar to that of the commercial electromagnetic type. The device can also function as a silent alarm based on oral airflows in dangerous situations, as it performs well at recognizing words according to their unique voltage-signal characteristics, and can avoid the effects of external sound noise, body movement, long distance, and occlusion. This strategy provides inspiration for functional diversification of piezoelectric MEMS speakers.

Formaldehyde has been regarded as a common indoor pollutant and does great harm to human health, which has caused the relevant departments to pay attention to its accurate detection. At present, spectrophotometry, gas chromatography, liquid chromatography, and other methods have been proposed for formaldehyde detection. Among them, the gas sensor is especially suitable for common gaseous formaldehyde detection with the fastest response speed and the highest sensitivity. Compared with the formaldehyde sensors based on small molecules, the polymer-based sensor has higher selectivity but lower sensitivity because the polymer-based sensor can realize the specific detection of formaldehyde through a specific chemical reaction. Polymer-related formaldehyde sensors can be very versatile. They can be fabricated with a single polymer, molecularly imprinted polymers (MIP), polymer/metal-oxide composites, different polymers, polymer/biomass material composites, polymer/carbon material composites, and polymer composites with other materials. Almost all of these sensors can detect formaldehyde at ppb levels under laboratory conditions. Moreover, almost all polymer nanocomposite sensors have better sensitivity than single polymer sensors. However, the sensing performance of the sensor will be greatly reduced in a humid environment due to the sensitive coating on the gaseous formaldehyde sensor, which is mostly a hydrophilic polymer. At present, researchers are trying to improve the sensitive material or use humidity compensation methods to optimize the gaseous formaldehyde sensor. The improvement of the practical performance of formaldehyde sensors has great significance for improving indoor living environments.

Potassium (K) is an indispensable nutrient element in the development of fruit trees in terms of yield and quality. It is unclear how a stable or unstable supply of K affects plant growth. We studied the root morphology and physiological and molecular changes in the carbon and nitrogen metabolism of M9T337 apple rootstock under different K levels and supply methods using hydroponics. Five K supply treatments were implemented: continuous low K (KL), initial low and then high K (KLH), appropriate and constant K (KAC), initial high and then low K (KHL), and continuous high K (KH). The results showed that the biomass, root activity, photosynthesis, and carbon and nitrogen metabolism of the M9T337 rootstocks were inhibited under KL, KH, KLH and KHL conditions. The KAC treatment promoted root growth by optimizing endogenous hormone content, enhancing carbon and nitrogen metabolism enzyme activities, improving photosynthesis, optimizing the distribution of carbon and nitrogen, and upregulating the transcription levels of nitrogen assimilation-related genes (nitrate reductase, glutamine synthetase, glutamate synthase, MdNRT1.1, MdNRT1.2, MdNRT1.5, MdNRT2.4). These results suggest that an appropriate and constant K supply ensures the efficient assimilation and utilization of nitrogen and carbon.

The delicate serpentine structures are widely used in high-performance stretchable electronics over the past decade. The metal interconnects encapsulated in biocompatible polymer Parylene-C film is a superior choice for long-term implantation in vivo, especially as neural interface to acquire electrophysiological signals or apply electrical stimulation. To avoid the physical contact damages from the neural tissues such as the brain or peripheral nerves, serpentine interconnects are utilized as stretchable electrodes and usually bonded to the soft elastomer substrate. The adhesion strength between the serpentine interconnects and the elastomer substrate becomes a considerable issue to ensure reliability and structural integrity. In this paper, the stretchable Parylene-C electrodes can be transfer printed onto arbitrary elastomer substrates by a thin layer of silicone rubber adhesive with low modulus for electrocorticogram (ECoG) recording. Mechanical simulation of serpentine structures consisting of same periodic arcs and different straight segments is investigated by uniaxial stretching. Then, the elastic stretchability of serpentine electrodes is further studied by simulation and experiments. After 5000 repetitive stretching cycles, the electrochemical impedance of microelectrodes remains in steady states. These results prove that the silicone rubber adhesive facilitates the interfacial bonding in the structure of stretchable electrodes as the compliant and reliable neural interface. Abstract The relatively long turnaround time and low sensitivity of traditional blood culture‐based diagnosis may delay effective antibiotic therapy for patients with bloodstream infections (BSIs). A rapid and sensitive pathogen detection method is urgently required to reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with BSIs. Acinetobacter baumannii and Klebsiella pneumoniae are two major microorganisms that cause BSIs. Here we report a novel droplet digital polymerase chain reaction (ddPCR) assay that can detect A. baumannii and K. pneumoniae in blood samples within 4 h, with a specificity of 100% for each strain and a limit of detection at 0.93 copies/μl for A. baumannii and 0.27 copies/μl for K. pneumoniae. Clinical validation of 170 patients with suspected BSIs showed that compared to blood cultures that detected four (2.4%) A. baumannii cases and seven (4.1%) K. pneumoniae cases, ddPCR detected 23 (13.5%) A. baumannii cases, 26 (15.3%) K. pneumoniae cases, and four (2.4%) co‐infection cases, including the 11 cases detected via blood culture. In addition, patients who tested positive via ddPCR alone (n = 42) had significantly lower serum concentrations of procalcitonin and lactate, SOFA and APACHE II scores, and 28‐day mortality than those reported positive via both blood culture and ddPCR (n = 11), suggesting that patients with less severe symptoms can potentially benefit from ddPCR‐based diagnosis. In conclusion, our study suggests that ddPCR represents a sensitive and rapid method for identifying causal pathogens in blood samples and guiding treatment decisions in the early stages of BSIs.

Purpose: Angiogenesis post-ischemia plays an essential role in preventing ischemic damage to tissue by improving the blood recovery. Determining the regulatory mechanism of ischemic angiogenesis, therefore, could provide effective therapeutics for ischemic injury.Materials and Methods: The RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) database was used to predict the association of gamma-aminobutyric acid type B receptor subunit 2 (GABBR2) with endothelial-specific expression. The role of GABBR2 in angiogenesis was verified in vitro by downregulating GABBR2 in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) with lentiviral vectors. Besides, the in vivo effect of GABBR2 on the blood recovery of an ischemic hindlimb was demonstrated by establishing a hindlimb ischemia model in normal and GABBR2 adenoviral vector-infected mice. Then, the mobilization of endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) in peripheral blood post-ischemia was determined by flow cytometry. Finally, the XF analyzer and Western blot were used to determine the effect of GABBR2 on endothelial metabolism.Results: The RNA-seq results indicated a strong association between GABBR2 and endothelial revascularization, and the upregulation of GABBR2 was detected in both hypoxia-treated HUVECs and ischemic mouse hindlimb. Hypoxia treatment for 6 h increased the proliferation, migration, and tube formation of HUVECs, which were inhibited by GABBR2 knockdown. Additionally, GABBR2 downregulation significantly decreased the blood flow recovery of mouse ischemic hindlimb. The expressions of the EPC markers CD34+ and CD133+ significantly decreased in the peripheral blood in hindlimb post-ischemia. Mechanically, glycolysis-dominated metabolism of HUVECs was compromised by GABBR2 knockdown. Evidences of the decreased expressions of HKII, PFKFB3, and PKM1 also supported the compromised glycolysis induced by GABBR2 downregulation.Conclusion: Our study demonstrated that GABBR2 regulated angiogenesis post-ischemia by inhibiting the glycolysis pathway.

Metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) and droplet digital PCR (ddPCR) have recently demonstrated a great potential for pathogen detection. However, few studies have been undertaken to compare these two nucleic acid detection methods for identifying pathogens in patients with bloodstream infections (BSIs). This prospective study was thus conducted to compare these two methods for diagnostic applications in a clinical setting for critically ill patients with suspected BSIs. Upon suspicion of BSIs, whole blood samples were simultaneously drawn for ddPCR covering 20 common isolated pathogens and four antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes, mNGS, and blood culture. Then, a head-to-head comparison was performed between ddPCR and mNGS. A total of 60 episodes of suspected BSIs were investigated in 45 critically ill patients, and ddPCR was positive in 50 (83.3%), mNGS in 41 (68.3%, not including viruses), and blood culture in 10 (16.7%) episodes. Of the 10 positive blood cultures, nine were concordantly identified by both mNGS and ddPCR methods. The head-to-head comparison showed that ddPCR was more rapid (~4 h vs. ~2 days) and sensitive (88 vs. 53 detectable pathogens) than mNGS within the detection range of ddPCR, while mNGS detected a broader range of pathogens (126 vs. 88 detectable pathogens, including viruses) than ddPCR. In addition, a total of 17 AMR genes, including 14 blaKPC and 3 mecA genes, were exclusively identified by ddPCR. Based on their respective limitations and strengths, the ddPCR method is more useful for rapid detection of common isolated pathogens as well as AMR genes in critically ill patients with suspected BSI, whereas mNGS testing is more appropriate for the diagnosis of BSI where classic microbiological or molecular diagnostic approaches fail to identify causative pathogens.

As the nuclear power plant containment is the third barrier to nuclear safety, real-time monitoring of containment leakage rate is very important in addition to the overall leakage test before an operation. At present, most of the containment leakage rate monitoring systems calculate the standard volume of moist air in the containment through monitoring parameters and calculate the daily leakage rate by the least square method. This method requires several days of data accumulation to accurately calculate. In this article, a new leakage rate modeling technique is proposed using a convolutional neural network based on data of the monitoring system. Use the daily monitoring parameters of nuclear power plants to construct inputs of the model and train the convolutional neural network with daily leakage rates as labels. This model makes use of the powerful nonlinear fitting ability of the convolutional neural network. It can use 1-day data to accurately calculate the containment leakage rate during the reactor start-up phase and can timely determine whether the containment leak has occurred during the start-up phase and deal with it in time, to ensure the integrity of the third barrier.

lncRNAs play important roles in lipopolysaccharide- (LPS-) induced acute lung injury. But the mechanism still needs further research. In the present study, we investigate the functional role of the lncRNA-SNHG14/miR-223-3p/Foxo3a pathway in LPS-induced ALI and tried to confirm its regulatory effect on autophagy. Transcriptomic profile changes were identified by RNA-seq in LPS-treated alveolar type II epithelial cells. The expression changes of lncRNA-SNHG14/miR-223-3p/Foxo3a were confirmed using qRT-PCR and west blot. The binding relationship of lncRNA-SNHG14/miR-223-3p/and miR-223-3p/Foxo3a was verified using dual-luciferase reporter, RNA immunoprecipitation, and RNA pull-down assays. Using gain-of-function or loss-of-function approaches, the effect of lncRNA-SNHG14/miR-223-3p/Foxo3a was investigated in LPS-induced acute lung injury mice model and in vitro. Increasing of lncRNA-SNHG14 and Foxo3a with reducing miR-223-3p was found in LPS-treated A549 cells and lung tissue collected from the LPS-induced ALI model. lncRNA-SNHG14 inhibited miR-223-3p but promoted Foxo3a expression as a ceRNA. Artificially changes of lncRNA-SNHG14/miR-223-3p/Foxo3a pathway promoted or protected cell injury from LPS in vivo and in vitro. Autophagy activity could be influenced by lncRNA-SNHG14/miR-223-3p/Foxo3a pathway in cells with or without LPS treatment. In conclusion, aberrant expression changes of lncRNA-SNHG14 participated alveolar type II epithelial cell injury and acute lung injury induced by LPS through regulating autophagy. One underlying mechanism is that lncRNA-SNHG14 regulated autophagy by controlling miR-223-3p/Foxo3a as a ceRNA. It suggested that lncRNA-SNHG14 may serve as a potential therapeutic target for patients with sepsis-induced ALI.

The experimental facility VULCAN was setup to study the fuel-coolant interaction (FCI) phenomena in a postulated severe accident of light water reactors. The heating system is important for the facility to prepare molten material in a crucible. This article is concerned with the design of the heating system, which applies electromagnetic induction heating method. The COMSOL code was employed to simulate the induction heating characteristics of a graphite crucible under different current and frequency of the work coil (inductor). Given a frequency, the relationship between the crucible’s average temperature and the inductor’s current is obtained, which is instrumental to select the power supply of the induction heating system. Meanwhile, the skin effect of induction heating is analyzed to guide the choice of frequency and inductor of the heating system. According to the simulation results, the induction heating system of frequency 47 kHz is suitable for the experiment, with a good agreement in temperature between the measured and the predicted.

Seafloor observatories can provide long-term, real-time submarine monitoring data, which has great significance for the study of major scientific technology in marine science, especially in the seafloor earthquake observation. The chained submarine data sampling and transmission system is the prototype and foundation of cabled seafloor earthquake observatories. This paper designs and builds a chained data sampling and transmission system (SQSTS) based on Zynq-7000 Soc (System on chip) and clock synchronization. At the beginning, we realized high-precision submarine data (24 bit) sampling based on Zynq-7000 Soc and ADS 1256. Using the PPS (Pulse per second) signal provided by the P88 1588 PTP (Precise time protocol) clock synchronization board and the inner crystal oscillator of the Zynq-7000 Soc, the time stamp up to the microsecond level, for the seismic data sampled in each seismometer node can support subsequent inversion of seismic data. In addition, a high-speed data transmission link connecting nodes in SQSTS, which is based on the Gigabit transceiver and optical cable, has been investigated. The transmission link has been realized by using the Aurora IP core. The theoretical calculations indicate that the data transmission bus bandwidth can reach 4 Gbps, while in the meantime its reliability has been proved by experiments. The experimental results show that the system owns the characteristics of high data sampling accuracy, stable and reliable high-speed transmission, and has promising application prospects.

pH value plays an important role in many fields such as chemistry and biology; therefore, rapid and accurate pH measurement is very important. Because of its advantages in preparation, wide test range, rapid response, and good biocompatibility, iridium oxide material has received more and more attention. In this paper, we present a method for preparing iridium oxide pH microelectrodes based on the sputter deposition method. The sputtering parameters of iridium oxide are also studied and optimized. Abstract We report the cytocompatibility and regulating effects of the nanostructured reduced graphene oxide (rGO) microfibers, which are synthesized through a capillary hydrothermal method, on neural differentiation of neural stem cells (NSCs). Our findings indicate that the flexible, mechanically strong, surface nanoporous, biodegradable, and cytocompatible nanostructured rGO microfibers not only offer a more powerful substrate for NSCs adhesion and proliferation compared with 2D graphene film and tissue cluture plate but also regulate the NSCs differentiation into neurons and form a dense neural network surrounding the microfiber. These results illustrate the great potential of nanostructured rGO microfibers as an artificial neural tissue engineering (NTE) scaffold for nerve regeneration.

Abstract Enteromorpha prolifera (E. prolifera), one of the main algae genera for green tide, significantly influences both the coastal ecological environment and seawater quality. How to effectively utilize this waste as reproducible raw resource with credible application mechanism are urgent environmental issues to be solved. Herein, E. prolifera was converted to attractive fluorescent carbon nanodots (CNDs) by one-pot green hydrothermal process. The purity and quantum yields for the as-prepared CNDs can be enhanced upon the post-treatment of ethanol sedimentation. The CNDs can be well dispersed in aqueous medium with uniform spherical morphology, narrow size distribution and average size of 2.75 ± 0.12 nm. The ease synthesis and relatively high quantum yields of the CNDs make E. prolifera inexpensive benefit to the human and nature, such as applications in efficient cell imaging and fiber staining. Furthermore, it was discovered that the fluorescence intensity of the CNDs can be selectively quenched upon Fe3+ addition, which can be used for specific sensitive assay and removal of Fe3+ in aqueous medium. More importantly, it was reasonably proposed that the quenching was resulted from the synergistic effects of CNDs aggregation and Fe3+-CNDs charge-transfer transitions due to the coordination interactions between Fe3+ and the oxygenous groups on the CNDs.

Abstract Background In 2012, the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine proposed a definition for acute gastrointestinal injury (AGI) based on current medical evidence and expert opinion. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the feasibility of using the current AGI grading system and to investigate the association between AGI severity grades with clinical outcome in critically ill patients. Methods Adult patients at 14 general intensive care units (ICUs) with an expected ICU stay ≥24 h were prospectively studied. The AGI grade was assessed daily on the basis of gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms, intra-abdominal pressures, and feeding intolerance (FI) in the first week of admission to the ICU. Results Among the 550 patients enrolled, 456 patients (82.9%) received mechanical ventilation, and 470 patients were identified for AGI. The distribution of the global AGI grade was 24.5% with grade I, 49.4% with grade II, 20.6% with grade III, and 5.5% with grade IV. Abstract Graphene oxide (GO) was rarely used as microwave absorption (MA) material due to its lower dielectric loss compared with reduced GO (RGO). However, the characteristics of low conductivity, light weight, and large surface area were beneficial to the impedance matching for absorbers already containing highly conductive metal materials. Cu@Ni nanowires are promising MA materials due to the desired dielectric loss from copper and excellent magnetic loss from nickel. However, the high density was an impediment to its further application. Combining Cu@Ni nanowires with GO should be an effective solution to decrease the absorber’s density and improve its MA properties. Herein, we demonstrated that Cu@Ni nanowires/GO composites exhibited enhanced MA capacities compared with Cu@Ni nanowires or GO alone, and the minimum reflection loss reached −42.8 dB at 16.9 GHz with a thickness of 2.1 mm. The enhanced MA performance mainly originated from good impedance matching, as a result of the addition of low conductivity of GO. To confirm this point, the MA performance of Cu@Ni nanowires/RGO was studied, and unsurprisingly, weak MA performance was obtained. Our work provides a new strategy to decrease the density, broaden the frequency band and tune MA performance of composites.

This letter presents an E-shaped piezoelectric energy harvester (PEH) based on vortex-shedding induced vibration (VSIV) for achieving broadband and enhanced energy capture from the liquid flow with low velocities. The PEH is realized by introducing two symmetrical vice piezoelectric beams to a traditional structure consisting of a drive sheet and a main piezoelectric beam. By changing the mass blocks on the sheet and vice beams, the first two order resonance frequencies can be tuned to be close enough to obtain a wide bidirectional tunable operating bandwidth. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed harvester can adapt to a wider fluid velocity spectrum and bring out higher output performances than the conventional PEH. Under the excitation of vortexes from the liquid flow with low velocities (0.15m/s–0.7m/s), the maximum increase in power, efficiency and velocity spectrum over 20μW can be 70%, 326% and 60%, respectively, compared to its conventional counterpart. The total size of the E-shaped harvester is L×W×H = 90 mm×70 mm×5 mm.

Background: An altered microRNA profile exists in many infectious diseases, including sepsis. CD39+ regulatory T-cells (Tregs) have a remarkable immunosuppressive effect and play an important role in the regulation of immune balance in sepsis. However, the correlation between microRNA changes and the ratio of CD39+ Tregs in sepsis patients has not yet been reported. The altered microRNA expression profile in sepsis patients was analyzed in this study. Moreover, the correlation between microRNAs and disease severity and prognosis was investigated. Furthermore, the correlation between microRNAs and the percentage of peripheral blood CD39+ Tregs was investigated and further verified in an animal model. Methods: Sixty sepsis patients and 30 healthy controls were included. The difference in microRNA expression was investigated by microRNA microarray and was further confirmed by real-time quantitative PCR. The correlations between microRNA changes and the Sepsis-related Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score, severity of sepsis, and survival were analyzed. The percentage CD39+ Tregs in the peripheral blood of sepsis patients was measured by flow cytometry. The correlation between microRNAs and the percentage CD39+ Tregs was analyzed and further confirmed in a mouse sepsis model. Results: Compared to healthy controls, sepsis patients exhibited a significantly elevated microRNA-155 (miR-155) level (p < 0.05), which was positively related to a higher SOFA score (r = 0.641, p < 0.05) and a greater severity of sepsis. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of miR-155 used for the prediction of 28-day survival was 0.763, with a cut-off point of 2.47. Patients with a miR-155 level >2.47 had a lower 28-day survival (p < 0.05). The miR-155 level of patients was proportional to the percentage of CD39+ Tregs (r = 0.637, p < 0.05). After transfection with miR-155 inhibitor, the ratio of CD39+ Tregs in mice with sepsis was significantly reduced (p < 0.05). Conclusions: A higher level of miR-155 indicated a more severe condition and poorer prognosis in sepsis patients. The possible underlying mechanism could be that miR-155 induces an increased percentage of CD39+ Tregs and thus immunosuppression.

Gold based structures such as nanoparticles (NPs) and nanowires (NWs) have widely been used as building blocks for sensing devices in chemistry and biochemistry fields because of their unusual optical, electrical and mechanical properties. This article gives a detailed review of the new properties and fabrication methods for gold nanostructures, especially gold nanowires (GNWs), and recent developments for their use in optical and electrochemical sensing tools, such as surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS).

Signal recording and stimulation with high spatial and temporal resolution are of increasing interest with the development of implantable brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). However, implantable BCI technology still faces challenges in the biocompatibility and long-term stability of devices after implantation. Due to the cone structure, needle electrodes have advantages in the biocompatibility and stability as nerve recording electrodes. This paper develops the fabrication of Ag needle micro/nano electrodes with a laser-assisted pulling method and modifies the electrode surface by electrochemical oxidation. A significant impedance reduction of the modified Ag/AgCl electrodes compared to the Ag electrodes is demonstrated by the electrochemical impedance spectrum (EIS). Furthermore, the stability of modified Ag/AgCl electrodes is confirmed by cyclic voltammogram (CV) scanning. These findings suggest that these micro/nano electrodes have a great application prospect in neural interfaces.

Reversible deactivation radical polymerizations (RDRPs) have proven to be the convenient tools for the preparation of polymeric architectures and nanostructured materials. When biodegradability is conferred to these materials, many biomedical applications can be envisioned. In this review, we discuss the synthesis and applications of biodegradable polymeric architectures using different RDRPs. These biodegradable polymeric structures can be designed as well-defined star-shaped, cross-linked or hyperbranched via smartly designing the chain transfer agents and/or post-polymerization modifications. These polymers can also be exploited to fabricate micelles, vesicles and capsules via either self-assembly or cross-linking methodologies. Nanogels and hydrogels can also be prepared via RDRPs and their applications in biomedical science are also discussed. In addition to the synthetic polymers, varied natural precursors such as cellulose and biomolecules can also be employed to prepare biodegradable polymeric architectures.

Cancer gives rise to an enormous number of deaths worldwide nowadays. Therefore, it is in urgent need to develop new therapies, among which combined therapies including photothermal therapy (PTT) and chemotherapy (CHT) using polymer-based nanocarriers have attracted enormous interest due to the significantly enhanced efficacy and great progress has been made so far. The preparation of such nanocarriers is a comprehensive task involving the cooperation of nanomaterial science and biomedicine science. In this review, we try to introduce and analyze the structure, preparation and synergistic therapeutic effect of various polymer-based nanocarriers composed of anti-tumor drugs, nano-sized photothermal materials and other possible parts. Our effort may bring benefit to future exploration and potential applications of similar nanocarriers.

Three kinds of N-doped mesoporous TiO2 hollow spheres with different N-doping contents, surface area, and pore size distributions were prepared based on a sol–gel synthesis and combined with a calcination process. Melamine formaldehyde (MF) microspheres have been used as sacrificial template and cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) or polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) was selected as pore-directing agent. Core–shell intermediate spheres of titania-coated MF with diameters of 1.2–1.6 μm were fabricated by varying the volume concentration of TiO2 precursor from 1 to 3 vol %. By calcining the core–shell composite spheres at 500 °C for 3 h in air, an in situ N-doping process occurred upon the decomposition of the MF template and CTAB or PVP pore-directing surfactant. N-doped mesoporous TiO2 hollow spheres with sizes in the range of 0.4–1.2 μm and shell thickness from 40 to 110 nm were obtained. The composition and N-doping content, thermal stability, morphology, surface area and pore size distribution, wall thickness, photocatalytic activities, and optical properties of the mesoporous TiO2 hollow spheres derived from different conditions were investigated and compared based on Fourier-transformation infrared (FTIR), SEM, TEM, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), nitrogen adsorption–desorption, and UV–vis spectrophotoscopy techniques. The influences of particle size, N-doping, porous, and hollow characteristics of the TiO2 hollow spheres on their photocatalytic activities and optical properties have been studied and discussed based on the composition analysis, structure characterization, and optical property investigation of these hollow spherical TiO2 matrices.
