1. Interplanetary Trajectory Design for NASA's Common Probe Study

Abstract

The Galileo Probe, Pioneer-Venus probes, and SPRITE concept all share a number of common characteristics. They all follow a similar entry and descent sequence, using an aeroshell to protect against entry environments, and parachutes to aid in extrusion and descent speed control of the descent vehicle containing the science instruments. The descent vehicles all contained similar instruments (e.g. mass spectrometers and atmosphere structure sensors), and data was either relayed back to a carrier spacecraft (Galileo Probe, SPRITE) or transmitted direct to Earth (Pioneer-Venus). Based on these similar characteristics, NASA initiated a study to investigate a “common probe' that might be designed to perform similar science in a variety of planetary environments. This concept would leverage a common aeroshell design, and descent vehicle designs that could be made as similar as possible (the primary exception being that Venus will require a pressure vessel due to the extreme pressures and temperatures seen in the lower portion of the descent). To support the Common Probe study, GSFC and JPL performed a series of interplanetary trajectory analyses to help develop the mission designs for Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. Primary considerations in the trajectory modeling included: a maximum of 12-year time of flight (for outer planet destinations), generation of both steep and shallow entry trajectories to each destination (where steep and shallow resulted in approximately 150 g and 50 g peak deceleration during entry at each location), and consideration of the data relay. Gravity assists and trajectories with low delta-V requirements (typically much less than 500 m/s) were also incorporated into the design process to enable launch on existing vehicles such as the Atlas V.

4. Initial Jupiter Orbit Insertion and Period Reduction Maneuver Plans for Juno

Abstract

This paper describes the initial plans for the New Frontiers Juno mission at Jupiter. It includes the considerable contingency planning for mission recovery if the Jupiter Orbit Insertion (JOI) burn to place Juno into a large capture orbit were interrupted or terminated on a burn timer setting, and the options for the mission if the Period Reduction Maneuver (PRM) burn to achieve the final orbit period were terminated early. The analyses were based on the assumption that 14-day orbits were the desired operational orbit period.

5. Juno Trajectory Redesign Following PRM Cancellation

Abstract

In October 2016, the Juno spacecraft was operating in 53.5-day capture orbits and final preparations were underway for a Period Reduction Maneuver (PRM) to achieve the planned 14-day science orbits. However, one week before PRM execution, a main engine propulsion system anomaly prompted an indefinite PRM delay and immediate updates to the Juno reference trajectory. This paper outlines stopgap trajectory design activities immediately following PRM delay and longer-term trajectory redesign considerations including various possible PRM epochs, orbit period, longitude grid characteristics, and eclipse avoidance strategies that culminated in the decision to cancel PRM and adopt a new 53-day reference trajectory.

The potentially habitable subsurface ocean of Europa may harbor life, and the globally young and comparatively thin ice shell of Europa may contain biosignatures that are readily accessible to a surface lander. Europa's icy shell also offers the opportunity to study tectonics and geologic cycles across a range of mechanisms and compositions. Here we detail the goals and mission architecture of the Europa Lander mission concept, as developed from 2015 through 2020. The science was developed by the 2016 Europa Lander Science Definition Team (SDT), and the mission architecture was developed by the preproject engineering team, in close collaboration with the SDT. In 2017 and 2018, the mission concept passed its mission concept review and delta-mission concept review, respectively. Abstract

NASA's Juno mission launched in 2011 and will explore the Jupiter system starting in 2016. Juno's suite of instruments is designed to investigate the atmosphere, gravitational fields, magnetic fields, and auroral regions. Its low perijove polar orbit will allow it to explore portions of the Jovian environment never before visited. While the Juno mission is not orbiting or flying close to Europa or the other Galilean satellites, planetary protection requirements for avoiding the contamination of Europa have been taken into account in the Juno mission design.The science mission is designed to conclude with a deorbit burn that disposes of the spacecraft in Jupiter's atmosphere. Compliance with planetary protection requirements is verified through a set of analyses including analysis of initial bioburden, analysis of the effect of bioburden reduction due to the space and Jovian radiation environments, probabilistic risk assessment of successful deorbit, Monte-Carlo orbit propagation, and bioburden reduction in the event of impact with an icy body.

9. Planetary protection trajectory analysis for the Juno mission

Abstract

Juno is an orbiter mission expected to launch in 2011 to Jupiter. Juno’s science orbit is a highly eccentric orbit with a period of about 11 days and a nominal duration of one year. Initially, the equatorial crossing near apojove occurs outside Callisto’s orbit, but as the mission evolves the apsidal rotation causes this distance to move much closer to Jupiter. This motion could lead to potential impacts with the Galilean satellites as the ascending node crosses the satellite orbits. In this paper, we describe the method to estimate impact probabilities with the satellites and investigate ways of reducing the probabilities for the Juno mission.

13. Optimal aeroassisted transfer between coplanar elliptical orbits

Abstract

This paper presents the solution for minimum-fuel, free-time transfer between coplanar elliptical orbits with the possible use of a planetary atmosphere to generate a decelerative braking force. The optimal pure propulsive two-impulse transfer is first considered. It is shown that the solution is obtained by solving a set of three equations for three unknowns. Reduction of the general equations is made for the case of symmetrical transfer and a complete first-order solution is provided for the case of transfer from nearly circular orbit. In aeroassisted transfer atmospheric braking at the perigee can be used to circularize the orbit, and in the circular configuration the orbit can be arbitrarily rotated without fuel consumption. It is shown that complete circularization of this intermediary orbit is optimal only when the rotation angle is large, and an explicit formula for evaluating this critical angle is provided. A complete solution is presented for the case of optimal rotation of an orbit. Finally, an example of optimal aeroassisted transfer is provided for the case of a transfer from a low-energy orbit to a high-energy orbit.

Abstract

The concept of the Darboux point at which an extremal loses its global optimality is extended to the case of discontinuous control. Using Contensou's domain of maneuverability, the condition for optimal switching at a corner is derived and the optimality of the trajectory in the neighborhood of a Darboux point is analyzed. The theory is applied to the problems of minimum-fuel planar and noncoplanar deorbit from elliptical orbits for atmospheric entry at a prescribed angle. In each case, the global optimal trajectory is assessed and it is found that in these nonlinear problems the Darboux point and the conjugate point are distinct. The global optimality is always lost before local optimality.

15. Galileo 1989 VEEGA trajectory design

Abstract

The new baseline for the Galileo Mission is a 1989 Venus-earth-earth gravity-assist (VEEGA) trajectory, which utilizes three gravity-assist planetary flybys in order to reduce launch energy requirements significantly compared to other earth-Jupiter transfer modes. The launch period occurs during October-November 1989. The total flight time is about 6 years, with November 1995 as the most likely choice for arrival at Jupiter. Optimal 1989 VEEGA trajectories have been generated for a wide range of earth launch dates and Jupiter arrival dates. Launch/arrival space contour plots are presented for various trajectory parameters, including propellant margin, which is used to measure mission performance. The accessible region of the launch/arrival space is defined by propellant margin and launch energy constraints; the available launch period is approximately 1.5 months long.

Abstract

The opportunity for the Galileo spacecraft to perform a close flyby of an asteroid or distant observation of a comet while on the Venus-Earth-Earth-Gravity-Assist (VEEGA) mission to Jupiter is discussed. More than 120 nominal trajectories were used in a scan program to identify asteroids passing within 30 million km of the spacecraft. A total of 47 asteroids were examined to determine the propellant cost of a close flyby. The possible flybys include a double asteroid flyby with No. 951 in October, 1991, with a flyby of No. 243 in August 1993. The factors considered in the selection of an asteroid include the propellant margin cost of modifying a nominal trajectory to include a close flyby, the size and type of asteroid, and the Jupiter arrival date.
