Several recent clinical trials have shown that docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) supplements have a significant effect on cognition in cognitively impaired older adults. This randomised controlled trial aimed to investigate the cognitive effects of a DHA fish oil supplement in older adults with mild cognitive impairment, and to examine the moderating effect of the apolipoprotein E (APOE) ɛ4 allele on cognition and well-being.Seventy-two older adults between the ages of 60 and 90 from New Zealand were given a DHA supplement equivalent to 1491 mg DHA + 351 mg eicosapentaenoic acid per day or a placebo for a period of 12 months. Outcome measures included cognition, wellbeing and self-rated quality of life as well as height, weight, blood pressure and APOE genotyping.The final analysis (n = 60) found no evidence of a treatment effect on cognitive measures, although did find a treatment effect on systolic blood pressure (p = 0.03, ƞDespite no effect on cognition, the positive result in APOE ɛ4 carriers on depression and anxiety scores and on systolic blood pressure justifies further DHA trials. It may be a prudent step going forward for more studies to replicate the design elements (dose, duration and cognitive measures) of previous DHA trials to help understand why not all older adults appear to benefit from taking a fish oil supplement.

Kiwifruit (KF) effects on the human glycaemic response to co-ingested wheat cereal were determined. Participants (n = 20) consumed four meals in random order, all being made to 40 g of the same available carbohydrate, by adding kiwifruit sugars (KF sug; glucose, fructose, sucrose 2:2:1) to meals not containing KF. The meals were flaked wheat biscuit (WB)+KFsug, WB+KF, WB+guar gum+KFsug, WB+guar gum+KF, that was ingested after fasting overnight. Blood glucose was monitored 3 h and hunger measured at 180 min post-meal using a visual analogue scale. KF and guar reduced postprandial blood glucose response amplitude, and prevented subsequent hypoglycaemia that occurred with WB+KFsug. The area between the blood glucose response curve and baseline from 0 to 180 min was not significantly different between meals, 0-120 min areas were significantly reduced by KF and/or guar. Area from 120 to 180 min was positive for KF, guar, and KF+guar, while the area for the WB meal was negative. Hunger at 180 min was significantly reduced by KF and/or guar when compared with WB. We conclude that KF components other than available carbohydrate may improve the glycaemic response profile to co-ingested cereal food.

Background: Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is important for brain function, and its status is dependent on dietary intakes. Therefore, individuals who consume diets low in omega-3 (n23) polyunsaturated fatty acids may cognitively benefit from DHA supplementation. Sex and apolipoprotein E genotype (APOE) affect cognition and may modulate the response to DHA supplementation. Objectives: We investigated whether a DHA supplement improves cognitive performance in healthy young adults and whether sex and APOE modulate the response. Design: Healthy adults (n = 176; age range: 18‐45 y; nonsmoking and with a low intake of DHA) completed a 6-mo randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind intervention in which they consumed 1.16 g DHA/d or a placebo. Cognitive performance was assessed by using a computerized cognitive test battery. For all tests, z scores were calculated and clustered into cognitive domains as follows: episodic and working memory, attention, reaction time (RT) of episodic and working memory, and attention and processing speed. The in vitro cytomolecular technique, sister chromatid exchange (SCE), was applied to test the clastogenic potentiality of extremely low frequency (ELF) electromagnetic fields (EMFs) on human peripheral blood lymphocytes (HPBLs). SCE frequencies were scored in dividing peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBLs) from six healthy male blood donors in two rounds of experiments, R1 and R2, to determine reproducibility. Lymphocyte cultures in the eight experiments conducted in each round were exposed to 50 Hz sinusoidal (continuous or pulsed) or square (continuous or pulsed) MFs at field strengths of 1 microT or 1 mT for 72 h. A significant increase in the number of SCEs/cell in the grouped experimental conditions compared to the controls was observed in both rounds. The highest SCE frequency in R1 was 10.03 for a square continuous field, and 10.39 for a square continuous field was the second highest frequency in R2. DNA crosslinking at the replication fork is proposed as a model which could explain the mechanistic link between ELF EMF exposure and increased SCE frequency.

Recent research has suggested that fear of driving is common in the general population. People may have various concerns when driving, and instruments for the assessment of these concerns are lacking. The present paper describes the development and preliminary evaluation of the Driving Cognitions Questionnaire (DCQ). The DCQ is a 20-item scale that measures three areas of driving-related concerns--panic-related, accident-related, and social concerns. In three separate samples from different countries (n=69, 100, and 78), the scale showed good internal consistency and substantial correlations with measures of the severity of driving fear. It discriminated well between people with and without driving phobia. It also showed convergent validity with other measures. The questionnaire shows promise for use in research and clinical practice.

This paper examines the clinical features, symptom severity, diagnostic profile, and help-seeking behaviour of a media-recruited sample of driving-fearful women. Results support previous findings of the primary foci of fear as motor vehicle accidents as well as specific driving situations and conditions. Consistent with prior research, there was difficulty relating the foci of fear to current diagnostic concepts. Social concerns were identified as having a role in driving fear for some individuals. Fearful participants exhibited high levels of fear and symptom severity according to various diagnostic and self-report measures, although most reported that they would be unlikely to seek professional psychological help or driving instruction. Assessment of cognitions indicated a range of errors likely to maintain anxiety and fear reactions that would be a target of treatment. There were no group differences in number of major recent accidents, although fearful drivers learnt to drive later than controls, suggesting early fearfulness.

Little empirical research has examined guidelines for neuropsychological assessment of people with severe physical and sensory disabilities. This study focused on people with expressive disabilities--people unable to speak, write, draw, or manipulate test materials. Measures were selected and adapted to be suitable for the assessment of cognitive functioning for such people. Responses were selected from multiple choice answers or were spelled out on an alphabet board. Individuals with expressive disabilities in addition to traumatic brain injuiry (TBI) were compared to individuals with TBI alone and a normative group. The measures were generally found to be reliable and valid assessment instruments. Individuals with expressive disabilities were able to manage the task requirements of the adapted tests. The results provided support for the adaptations trialed.

The authors review the literature on the 2 main models of the placebo effect: expectancy theory and classical conditioning. A path is suggested to dissolving the theoretical impasse that has long plagued this issue. The key is to make a clear distinction between 2 questions: What factors shape placebo effects? and What learning mediates the placebo effect? The reviewed literature suggests that classical conditioning procedures are one shaping factor but that verbal information can also shape placebo effects. The literature also suggests that conditioning procedures and other sources of information sometimes shape conscious expectancies and that these expectancies mediate some placebo effects; however, in other cases conditioning procedures appear to shape placebo effects that are not mediated by conscious cognition. The placebo effect is a topic of interest to psychologists and health practitioners in a wide variety of areas, and the question of the mechanisms underlying this effect is gaining increasing attention. In this article, we review the literature related to the two main approaches to the placebo phenomenon: expectancy theory and classical conditioning. According to expectancy theory, placebo effects are mediated by explicit (consciously accessible) expectancies. In contrast, according to the classical conditioning approach, they are conditioned responses (CRs). We begin with the problematic issue of defining placebos and placebo effects, and we then turn to the question of whether these effects actually exist. Having established that they do, we shift the focus to the main task of the article: determining the roles of expectancy and conditioning in the placebo effect. This task is divided into two parts. The first has the aim of clearing up the confusion that exists in the placebo literature concerning the relationship between conditioning and expectancy. These approaches are often pitted against one another, under the assumption that either expectancy theory or classical conditioning accounts for the placebo effect. We reject this view, arguing that the two approaches are compatible. One stumbling block is the assumption that classical conditioning is a particular form of learning, necessarily distinct from expectancy learning. However, conditioning is defined in terms of stimulus inputs and their subsequent effects. Specifically, an organism has been classically conditioned when exposure to a contingency between a conditioned stimulus (CS) and an unconditioned stimulus (US) results in a relevant change in the organism’s state or behavior. This leaves open the question of what mechanisms mediate conditioning. In some cases, conditioning procedures lead to nonconscious learning, and the effects of conditioning are not cognitively mediated. In other cases, though, conditioning effects are mediated by conscious expectancies. Thus, expectancy theory provides an explanation for some examples of classical conditioning. It has been known for over 40 years that there are two fundamentally different kinds of detection tasks in the theory of signal detectability. The Type 1 task is to distinguish between events defined independently of the observer; the Type 2 task is to distinguish between one's own correct and incorrect decisions about those Type 1 events. For the Type 1 task, the behavior of the detector can be summarized by the traditional receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. This curve can be compared with a theoretical ROC curve, which can be generated from overlapping probability functions conditional on the Type 1 events on an appropriate decision axis. We show how to derive the probability functions underlying Type 2 decisions from those for the Type 1 task. ROC curves and the usual measures of performance are readily obtained from those Type 2 functions, and some relationships among various Type 1 and Type 2 performance measures are presented. We discuss the relationship between Type 1 and Type 2 confidence ratings and caution against the practice of presenting transformed Type 2 ratings as empirical Type 1 ratings.

Vicia faba seedlings, subjected to a 10 µT 50 Hz square wave magnetic field for 40 min together with a radioactive pulse, showed a marked increase in amino acid uptake into intact roots. A more modest increase was observed with a 100 µT 50 Hz square wave. An increase in media conductivity at low field intensities from 10 µT 50 Hz square wave, 100 µT 50 Hz sine wave, and 100 µT 60 Hz square wave fields, indicated an alteration in the movement of ions across the plasma membrane, most likely due to an increase in net outflow of ions from the root cells. Similarly, marked elevation in media pH, indicating increased alkalinity, was observed at 10 and 100µT for both square and sine waves at both 50 and 60 Hz. Our data would indicate that low magnetic field intensities of 10 and 100 µT at 50 or 60 Hz can alter membrane transport processes in root tips. This article reviews the research on driving-related fear (DRF). Until recently, research has concentrated almost exclusively on the effect of motor vehicle accidents (MVAs) on subsequent levels of DRF. However, recent findings have suggested that MVAs are not solely responsible for this fear reaction, and that non-MVA driving fear can be just as strong. Studies of the broader driving-fearful population have encountered difficulty with diagnostic conceptualisation of DRF, although some have investigated a possible typology of DRF. Driving skill has been a neglected issue in the DRF research, and may prove to be a useful part of assessment and remediation of this potentially debilitating problem. Issues of definitional inconsistency are highlighted, and suggestions are made for several directions that future research might profitably take.

Several recent studies have attempted to lay the groundwork for a simple, low level computer security system involving cognitive and word association passwords. The present research investigated the effect of three different word association formulation techniques on recall rates when participants were presented with their original cue words after a 2 week retention interval. Differences in the susceptibility of word associations to being guessed by someone the participant knew well were also examined. In the 'response only' group (n = 24), respondents were provided with a list of 20 cue words and were required to generate an associated response for each cue. In the 'cues and responses' group (n = 25), respondents generated both cues and associated responses, while in the 'theme' group (n = 24), respondents generated both cue and response words having first decided upon a theme for their word associations. The average recall and guessing rates were 66% and 8%, respectively. No statistically significant differences in recall or guessing rates were found between the three groups. The effect sizes obtained strongly suggest that insufficient statistical power was available to produce significant effects. Nevertheless, it is tentatively concluded that the formulation techniques employed have only a small effect on ease of recall. Future research on the utility of word associations as computer passwords needs to be based in a real computer security setting.

The present study was conducted in response to increasing concerns about the potential unreliability of retrospective accounts in assessing the origins of fears and phobias. Some investigators [e.g. Menzies, R.G., & Clarke, J.C. (1993). The etiology of fear of heights and its relationship to severity and individual response patterns. Behaviour Research and Therapy, 31, 355–365; Kirkby, K.C., Menzies, R.G., Daniels, B.A., & Smith, K.L. (1995). Aetiology of spider phobia: Classificatory differences between two origins instruments. Behaviour Research and Therapy, 33, 955–958; King, N.J., Gullone, E., & Ollendick, T.H. (1998). Etiology of childhood phobias: current status of Rachman's three pathways theory. Behaviour Research and Therapy, 36, 297–309.] have questioned the reliability of retrospective reports at a single assessment point, although the test–retest reliability of such accounts has yet to be examined. The aim of the present study was to conduct a one-year follow-up of the subclinical driving-fearful sample studied by Taylor and Deane [Taylor, J. E., & Deane, F. P. (1999). Acquisition and severity of driving-related fears. Behaviour Research and Therapy, 37, 435–449.] to primarily investigate the stability of fear onset ascriptions and fear severity over time. 85 respondents completed a questionnaire which assessed fear origins, anxiety response patterns, and additional fear-relevant events occurring over the year. The results suggest that retrospective accounts of fear onset may be quite unstable over time, although this instability does not clearly appear to be related to intervening events, and limitations of the study make these results inconclusive. Fear-relevant negative thinking worsened over time, while physiological reactions and general anxiety remained relatively stable. The theoretical, methodological and clinical implications of the findings are discussed, along with suggestions for future research.

Self-report estimates of frequency and duration of computer use are used extensively in research related to computer and information systems acceptance. Despite concerns that self-report estimates are inferior to computer log data there is a paucity of research investigating the relationship between self-report and log data measures of computer use. The present study compared self-report estimates and six months of electronic log data for 62 health care workers using a new Community Services Information System. There were moderate to strong correlations between the self-report and electronic log estimates of frequency and duration of system use. Self-report estimates were relatively accurate in that they were quite similar in magnitude to log data values. The merits of combinations of frequency and duration data (composites) were also assessed.

Vicia faba seedlings were subjected to one of the following magnetic fields continuously for 3 days: 0 Hz (DC) at 5 mT, 50 Hz at 1.5 mT, 60 Hz at 1.5 mT, and 75 Hz at 1.5 mT. The lengths of all the phases of mitosis differed from the controls in all treatments using alternating magnetic fields and for prophase and metaphase in the DC condition. In particular, all treatments increased the length of prophase significantly in meristematic root-tip cells compared with the controls. The implications of these results for chromosome coiling are discussed. The length of prophase, however, did not vary significantly between any of the treatments. A two-alternative, forced-choice visual duration discrimination task was used to examine the effect of an intermittent, 50 Hz, 100 microT magnetic field on accuracy at two different times of the day. A total of 59 female and 40 male subjects with an age range of 18 to 46 years were studied under both field-exposed and sham-exposed conditions. The subject's task was to decide which of two sequentially presented light flashes had the longer duration, percentage correct being the measure of performance. The data were gathered under double-blind conditions with sham and real exposure counterbalanced. Exposure to the magnetic field produced a small improvement in accuracy but only at the most difficult level of the task, with female subjects showing a larger improvement than males. The time of day at which the study was run had no effect on performance. Despite the relatively large number of subjects used and a relaxed alpha level (P = .3), the statistical power of the test to detect the observed effect was still only 0.71.

Research examining the effects of electromagnetic fields (EMFs) on human performance and physiology has produced inconsistent results; this might be attributable to low statistical power. Statistical power refers to the probability of obtaining a statistically significant result, given the fact that a real effect exists. The results of a survey of published investigations of the effects of EMFs on human performance and physiology show that statistical power levels are very low, ranging from a mean of .08 for small effect sizes to .46 for large effect sizes. Implications of these findings for the interpretation of results are discussed along with suggestions for increasing statistical power.

One hundred subjects, males and females with ages ranging between 18 and 48 years, were studied under both field-exposed and sham-exposed conditions. A 50 Hz, 100 mu T magnetic field (MF) was used. To examine the effect of field exposure on performance, a two-alternative, forced-choice, duration-discrimination task with three levels of difficulty was used. The subject's task was to decide which of two sequentially presented light flashes had the longer duration. The standard duration was 50 ms, and the alternative durations were 65, 100, or 125 ms. Both reaction time and percentage of correct responses were recorded for each subject. MF and sham exposure were for 9 min each. Blood pressure and heart rate were also measured before and following MF exposure and sham-exposure trials. The study was performed double blind, with the exposure order counterbalanced. Compared to sham exposure, MF exposure significantly decreased reaction time on the hardest level of the performance task. MF exposure did not reliably affect percentage correct or cardiovascular performance. It was demonstrated that a relatively high level of statistical power was the basis for the observed MF effect, and the need to pay closer attention to power levels in future research is discussed. Usability has become an important factor in the design of interactive software. In the quest to develop usable software, user participation in the design and evaluation process has been advocated. Four methods; logged data, questionnaires, interviews, and verbal protocol analyses have been the prominent base evaluation methods used, sometimes being combined in an attempt to provide a comprehensive evaluation. However, little is known about the strengths and weaknesses of these methods. In this study, these four methods were used to evaluate three different software types (spreadsheet, word processor, and database) with 148 subjects participating. The data obtained enabled a number of conclusions to be drawn regarding the usefulness of the methods when used individually and in combination.

Two double-blind studies were run in an attempt to confirm the finding that a 0.2 Hz magnetic field affects simple reaction time (RT) in humans, whereas a 0.1 Hz field does not. In the first experiment, 12 volunteer subjects were exposed to a continuous 0.2 Hz, 0.1 Hz, or sham field in a fully counterbalanced, within-subjects design. Subjects were run singly for one condition each day over 3 consecutive days with a field strength of 1.1 mT and a daily exposure duration of 5 min. Neither magnetic field had any effect on RT at any time during the exposure. One condition of a second study, using a new group of 24 volunteer subjects, also failed to find any field effects at 0.2 Hz. Additionally, the second study failed to show any effects when the frequency, flux density, and field orientation were set according to parametric resonance theory. It is suggested that, although ELF magnetic field effects on human behaviour may be elusive, future research can improve detection rates by paying greater attention to reducing error variance and increasing statistical power.

Eighty-five New Zealand based practitioners experienced in treating adults with a history of child sexual abuse participated in an online judgment study of child sexual abuse outcomes using signal detection theory methodology. Participants' level of sensitivity was assessed independent of their degree of response bias when discriminating (a) known child sexual abuse outcomes from behaviors thought to be unrelated to child sexual abuse and (b) direct child sexual abuse effects from subsequent coping strategies. Results demonstrated good sensitivity (accuracy) when identifying child sexual abuse effects from noneffects. When asked to discriminate direct child sexual abuse effects from ways of coping with distress, practitioners' accuracy was reduced, revealing a tendency to identify all effects as coping. Although treatment approaches highlight the pivotal role of identifying coping strategies, practitioners did not perceive maladaptive coping as a distinct clinical feature. Complex abuse cases may benefit from replacing maladaptive coping strategies (e.g., self-harm) with constructive coping (e.g., social support) in order to deliver efficacious practice.

This experiment examined the effects of memory load over three periods of delay. Following presentation of 20, 35, or 50 targets, subjects were required to select these from an equal number of distractors 10 min, 1 week, or 2 weeks later. Increased target load (independent of increases in recognition load) decreased accuracy mainly by decreasing hit rate. Increasing delay decreased accuracy largely as a result of an increased false alarm rate. Most individual ROC curves, plotted on z-coordinates, had slopes < 1. Implications of this finding for the use of d' are discussed.

The purpose of this study was to investigate deficits in recognition, recall, and prospective memory among Parkinson's disease (PD) patients, and to ascertain whether task difficulty and disease severity moderate these deficits. Comparisons were made between 41 nondemented PD participants, divided into early-stage and advanced-stage groups, and 41 matched controls. PD participants exhibited deficits in recognition, recall, and prospective memory. The advanced-stage PD group produced greater deficits than the early-stage PD group in all tasks, suggesting that these deficits increase in step with overall disease severity. The results of the task difficulty manipulation provide a partial explanation for the inconsistencies in the literature concerning the existence of recognition memory deficits in PD.

The present study explores driving skills in a group of 50 media-recruited driving-fearful and 50 control drivers, all of whom were women. Participants completed an on-road practical driving assessment with a professional driving instructor. Diagnostic as well as pre-post self-report and instructor driving assessments were conducted. Fearful drivers made more errors on the driving assessment than controls. However, the pattern of errors was identical for both groups, indicating that fear and anxiety may be associated with the number rather than the type of driving errors made. These differences remained when factors such as driving history, current driving frequency, and diagnosis were controlled using case selection. More research is needed to replicate the findings in more diverse samples. Additional work should also aim to clarify the specific role of driving skills in driving fear, which will facilitate treatment planning for exposure-based treatments and help identify cases where driving skills assessment may be appropriate.

The main goal of our original article (Stewart-Williams & Podd, 2004) was to resolve the debate between the two major approaches to the placebo effect: expectancy theory and classical conditioning. In his commentary on this article, Kirsch (2004) discussed the relationship between these approaches. His position is largely consistent with our own, and therefore we have little to say in response to this aspect of the commentary. Our only comment concerns Kirsch’s suggestion that classical conditioning is included as a component of expectancy theory. Although we agree that conditioning is one cause of expectancy change, we would emphasize that it cannot be wholly subsumed by expectancy theory, as there are some instances of conditioning that do not involve expectancies (as Kirsch, 2004, recognized). Aside from this small point, the main focus of our reply is the question of placebo psychotherapies. We also briefly consider the issue of nonconscious learning in the placebo effect.

Recall and guessing rates for conventional, cognitive, and word association passwords were compared using 86 Massey University undergraduates. Respondents completed a questionnaire covering all three password types, returning two weeks later for a recall test. Each respondent also nominated a "significant other" (parent, partner, etc.) who tried to guess the respondent's answers. On average, cognitive items produced the highest recall rates (80%) but the guessing rate was also high (39.5%). Word associations produced low guessing rates (7%) but response words were poorly recalled (39%). Nevertheless, both cognitive items and word associations showed sufficient promise as password techniques to warrant further investigation.

Bioelectromagnetic field research has some way to go before the scientific community at large is convinced that weak, extremely low frequency electromagnetic fields affect biological systems. This paper argues that researchers are doing themselves and the discipline an injustice by running studies where statistical power is very low. The most frequent outcome of low statistical power is a null result, even when there are experimental effects to be detected. It is suggested that future research must address the issue of statistical power, both through increasing it in individual studies and through conducting meta-analytic investigations of existing research.

The present study investigated both the direct and delayed effects of a 50 Hz, 100 microT magnetic field on human performance. Eighty subjects completed a visual duration discrimination task, half being exposed to the field and the other half sham exposed. The delayed effects of this field were also examined in a recognition memory task that followed immediately upon completion of the discrimination task, Unlike our earlier studies, we were unable to find any effects of the field on reaction time and accuracy in the visual discrimination task. However, the field had a delayed effect on memory, producing a decrement in recognition accuracy. We conclude that after many years of experimentation, finding a set of magnetic field parameters and human performance measures that reliably yield magnetic field effects is proving elusive. Yet the large number of significant findings suggests that further research is warranted.

Fear of driving has been recognized as a complex diagnostic entity. Studies on flying phobia have drawn similar conclusions, although increasing clarity has been gained through research that indicates that there may be subtypes of flying phobia based on the focus of fear. However, it is unclear if similar subtypes exist for fear of driving. The aim of the present study was to conduct a preliminary investigation of driving fear subtypes and to clarify further whether there were differences between driving-fearful respondents who had been in a motor vehicle accident (MVA) and those who had not. Eighty-five driving-fearful, media-recruited respondents completed a questionnaire that assessed anxiety, avoidance, and concerns related to their driving fears. The sample had high expectations of negative events while driving. There were no significant differences between those who had experienced an MVA and those who had not on various measures of fear severity. Cluster analysis revealed two main foci of fear, one characterized by danger expectancies and the other based on anxiety expectancies and unpleasant driving situations. This emphasizes the importance of assessing both internal and external foci of fear. Although this finding is consistent with the results obtained for flying phobia, more research is required to replicate and extend these results and to develop and evaluate differential treatment programs.

The study assessed whether experimentally induced learned helplessness on a cognitive training task generalized to a situationally dissimilar social interaction test task. Subjects were randomly assigned to non-contingent feedback, contingent feedback and control groups. The non-contingent feedback group demonstrated increased levels of affect (Anxiety. Depression and Hostility) following the training phase, indicating a successful helplessness induction. However, no significant differences were observed between the groups on the subsequent test task, showing that helplessness failed to generalize. A time delay between the test and training phase did not affect the performance of the non-contingent group, although there was an unexpected main effect with all subjects who experienced the delay showing facilitated performance. Results are discussed in terms of the reformulated learned helplessness model and extensions to it.

In the present study, we investigated age-related decline in face recognition memory and whether this decline is moderated by the age of the target faces and by the number of faces that the participant must learn (memory load). Thirty-two participants in each of three age groups (18-39 years, 60-75 years, and 76-96 years) completed a face recognition task. Signal detection analyses confirmed that face recognition accuracy declined with age. However, this finding was qualified by an interaction between participant age and target age, which revealed that the age-related decline in face recognition accuracy occurred only for young target faces. Increased memory load was associated with comparable performance decrements across all age groups. However, memory load appears not to be the cause of these decrements. Instead, they appear to be a product of recognition load (the number of stimuli presented in the recognition phase).
