Our study aims to elucidate both short-term and long-term variations in the light curve of the eclipsing system OGLE-LMC-ECL-14413, with a particular focus on the unusual reversals in eclipse depth. We aim to clarify the role of the accretion disk in these fluctuations, especially in long-cycle changes spanning hundreds of days. Additionally, we seek to determine the evolutionary stage of the system and gain insights into the internal structure of its stellar components. We analyzed photometric time series from the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE) project in the I and V bands, and from the MAssive Compact Halo Objects project in the BM and RM bands, covering a period of 30.85 years. Using light curve data from 27 epochs, we constructed models of the accretion disk. An optimized simplex algorithm was employed to solve the inverse problem, deriving the best-fit parameters for the stars, orbit, and disk. We also utilized the Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics software to assess the evolutionary stage of the binary system, investigating the progenitors and potential future developments. We found an orbital period of 38.15917(54) d and a long-term cycle of approximately 780 d. Temperature, mass, radius, and surface gravity values were determined for both stars. The photometric orbital cycle and the long-term cycle are consistent with a disk containing variable physical properties, including two shock regions. The disk encircles the more massive star and the system brightness variations align with the long-term cycle at orbital phase 0.25. Frontier AI safety policies highlight automation of AI research and development (R&D) by AI agents as an important capability to anticipate. However, there exist few evaluations for AI R&D capabilities, and none that are highly realistic and have a direct comparison to human performance. We introduce RE-Bench (Research Engineering Benchmark, v1), which consists of 7 challenging, open-ended ML research engineering environments and data from 71 8-hour attempts by 61 distinct human experts. We confirm that our experts make progress in the environments given 8 hours, with 82% of expert attempts achieving a non-zero score and 24% matching or exceeding our strong reference solutions. We compare humans to several public frontier models through best-of-k with varying time budgets and agent designs, and find that the best AI agents achieve a score 4x higher than human experts when both are given a total time budget of 2 hours per environment. However, humans currently display better returns to increasing time budgets, narrowly exceeding the top AI agent scores given an 8-hour budget, and achieving 2x the score of the top AI agent when both are given 32 total hours (across different attempts). Qualitatively, we find that modern AI agents possess significant expertise in many ML topics -- e.g. an agent wrote a faster custom Triton kernel than any of our human experts' -- and can generate and test solutions over ten times faster than humans, at much lower cost. We open-source the evaluation environments, human expert data, analysis code and agent trajectories to facilitate future research.

Synthesizing relational data has started to receive more attention from researchers, practitioners, and industry. The task is more difficult than synthesizing a single table due to the added complexity of relationships between tables. For the same reason, benchmarking methods for synthesizing relational data introduces new challenges. Our work is motivated by a lack of an empirical evaluation of state-of-the-art methods and by gaps in the understanding of how such an evaluation should be done. We review related work on relational data synthesis, common benchmarking datasets, and approaches to measuring the fidelity and utility of synthetic data. We combine the best practices and a novel robust detection approach into a benchmarking tool and use it to compare six methods, including two commercial tools. While some methods are better than others, no method is able to synthesize a dataset that is indistinguishable from original data. For utility, we typically observe moderate correlation between real and synthetic data for both model predictive performance and feature importance.

How has generative AI impacted the experiences of college students? We study the influence of AI on the study habits, class choices, and career prospects of Harvard undergraduates (n=326), finding that almost 90% of students use generative AI. For roughly 25% of these students, AI has begun to substitute for attending office hours and completing required readings. Half of students are concerned that AI will negatively impact their job prospects, and over half of students wish that Harvard had more classes on the future impacts of AI. We also investigate students' outlook on the broader social implications of AI, finding that half of students are worried that AI will increase economic inequality, and 40% believe that extinction risk from AI should be treated as a global priority with the same urgency as pandemics and nuclear war. Around half of students who have taken a class on AI expect AI to exceed human capabilities on almost all tasks within 30 years. We make some recommendations to the Harvard community in light of these results.

We study the dynamics of avalanche ionization of pure helium nanodroplets activated by a weak extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) pulse and driven by an intense near-infrared (NIR) pulse. In addition to a transient enhancement of ignition of a nanoplasma at short delay times $\sim200$~fs, long-term activation of the nanodroplets lasting up to a few nanoseconds is observed. Molecular dynamics simulations suggest that the short-term activation is caused by the injection of seed electrons into the droplets by XUV photoemission. Long-term activation appears due to electrons remaining loosely bound to photoions which form stable `snowball' structures in the droplets. Thus, we show that XUV irradiation can induce long-lasting changes of the strong-field optical properties of nanoparticles, potentially opening new routes to controlling avalanche-ionization phenomena in nanostructures and condensed-phase systems.

We present the results of the analysis of Type II and anomalous Cepheids using the data from the Kepler K2 mission. The precise light curves of these pulsating variable stars are the key to study the details of their pulsation, such as the period-doubling effect or the presence of additional modes. We applied the Automated Extended Aperture Photometry (autoEAP) to obtain the light curves of the targeted variable stars which were observed. The light curves were Fourier analyzed. We investigated twelve stars observed by the K2 mission, seven Type II and five anomalous Cepheids. Among the Type II Cepheids EPIC 210622262 shows period-doubling, and four stars have modulation present in their light curves which are different from the period-doubling effect. We calculated the high-order Fourier parameters for the short-period Cepheids. We also determined physical parameters by fitting model atmospheres to the spectral energy distributions. The determined distances using the parallaxes measured by the Gaia space telescope have limited precision below 16 mag for these types of pulsating stars, regardless if the inverse method is used or the statistical method to calculate the distances. The BaSTI evolutionary models were compared to the luminosities and effective temperatures. Most of the Type II Cepheids are modeled with low metallicity models, but for a few of them solar-like metallicity ([Fe/H]=0.06) model is required. The anomalous Cepheids are compared to low-metallicity single stellar models. One of the main difficulties to efficiently generating high-order harmonics in long neutral-gas targets is to reach the phase-matching conditions. One issue is that the medium cannot be sufficiently ionized by the driving laser due to plasma defocusing. We propose a method to improve the phase-matching by pre-ionizing the gas using a weak capillary discharge. We have demonstrated this mechanism, for the first time, in absorption-limited XUV generation by an 800 nm femtosecond laser in argon and krypton. The phase-mismatch control ability of our method is confirmed by an analytical model and numerical simulation of the complete generation process. Context. The eclipsing close binary UU Cas is an interacting massive double-periodic system with a gainer star partly hidden in an accretion disk. Aims. In order to study the physics of the accretion process in greater detail, along with the structure and dynamics of the circumstellar matter in the system, we supplement our previous results obtained from photometry with an analysis of the spectra of UU Cas. Methods. We collected all available spectra used in previous publications on UU Cas and we acquired new ones. The method of disentangling was applied to this set of spectra spanning the years 2008-2021. The orbital parameters were disentangled and a fit of the separated component spectra by synthetic ones has been used to determine the physical parameters of the component stars. We compared the results to models of the evolution of interacting binaries. Results. We found that in addition to the dominant role of the donor star and a weak contribution of the gainer, the line profiles are strongly influenced by the circumstellar matter. The absorption lines reveal a presence of a disk wind emanating above the orbital plane. The variability of H{\alpha} emission yields evidence of changes in the structure of the circumstellar matter on a timescale of several orbital periods.

We have done photometric calibration of the 60 cm Nedeljkovi\'{c} telescope equipped with FLI PL 230 CCD camera, mounted at the Astronomical Station Vidojevica (Serbia), using standard stars from the Landolt's catalog. We have imaged 31 fields of standard stars using Johnson's $BVRI$ filters during three nights in August 2019. We have measured both extinction and color correction. Relating our calibrated magnitudes to the magnitudes of the standard stars from the Landolt's catalog, we have achieved accuracy of 2\%-5\% for the $BVRI$ magnitudes., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Serbian Astronomical Journal

We report on the status of a users' end-station, MAC: a Multipurpose station for Atomic, molecular and optical sciences and Coherent diffractive imaging, designed for studies of structure and dynamics of matter in the femtosecond time-domain. MAC is located in the E1 experimental hall on the high harmonic generation (HHG) beamline of the ELI Beamlines facility. The extreme ultraviolet beam from the HHG beamline can be used at the MAC end-station together with a synchronized pump beam (which will cover the NIR/Vis/UV or THz range) for time-resolved experiments on different samples. Sample delivery systems at the MAC end-station include a molecular beam, a source for pure or doped clusters, ultrathin cylindrical or flat liquid jets, and focused beams of substrate-free nanoparticles produced by an electrospray or a gas dynamic virtual nozzle combined with an aerodynamic lens stack. We further present the available detectors: electron/ion time-of-flight and velocity map imaging spectrometers and an X-ray camera, and discuss future upgrades: a magnetic bottle electron spectrometer, production of doped nanodroplets and the planned developments of beam capabilities at the MAC end-station., Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures. We present the first analysis of Cepheid stars observed by the TESS space mission in Sectors 1 to 5. Our sample consists of 25 pulsators: ten fundamental mode, three overtone and two double-mode classical Cepheids, plus three Type II and seven anomalous Cepheids. The targets were chosen from fields with different stellar densities, both from the Galactic field and from the Magellanic System. Three targets have 2-minute cadence light curves available by the TESS Science Processing Operations Center: for the rest, we prepared custom light curves from the full-frame images with our own differential photometric FITSH pipeline. Our main goal was to explore the potential and the limitations of TESS concerning the various subtypes of Cepheids. We detected many low amplitude features: weak modulation, period jitter, and timing variations due to light-time effect. We also report signs of non-radial modes and the first discovery of such a mode in an anomalous Cepheid, the overtone star XZ Cet, which we then confirmed with ground-based multicolor photometric measurements. We prepared a custom photometric solution to minimize saturation effects in the bright fundamental-mode classical Cepheid, $\beta$ Dor with the lightkurve software, and we revealed strong evidence of cycle-to-cycle variations in the star. In several cases, however, fluctuations in the pulsation could not be distinguished from instrumental effects, such as contamination from nearby sources which also varies between sectors. We present the results of the study of the close binary UU Cassiopeiae based on previously published multi wavelength photometric and spectroscopic data. Based on eclipse timings of the last 117 years, we find an improved orbital period of $\rm P_{o} = 8.519296(8)$ d. In addition, we find a long cycle of length $T$ $\sim$ 270 d in the $I_c$-band data. There is no evidence for orbital period change during the last century, suggesting that the rate of mass loss from the system or mass exchange between the stars should be small. Sporadic and rapid brightness drops of up to $\Delta$$V$ = 0.3 mag are detected during the whole orbital cycle and infrared photometry clearly suggests the presence of circumstellar matter. We model the orbital light curve of 11 published datasets fixing the mass ratio and cool star temperature from previous spectroscopic work; $q$= 0.52 and $T_c$= 22 700 K. We find a system seen at angle 74 degrees with a stellar separation of 52 ${\rm R_{\odot}}$, a temperature for the hotter star $T_h$= 30 200 $K$ and stellar masses 17.4 and 9 ${\rm M_{\odot}}$ , radii 7.0 and 16.9 ${\rm R_{\odot}}$ and surface gravities log g = 3.98 and 2.94, for the hotter and cooler star, respectively. We find an accretion disk surrounding the more massive star, with a radius of 21 ${\rm R_{\odot}}$ and vertical thickness in its outer edge of 6.5 ${\rm R_{\odot}}$, mostly occulting the hotter star. Two active regions hotter than the surrounding disk are found, one located roughly in the expected position where the stream impacts the disk and the other one in the opposite side of the disk. We revisited the short period Type II Cepheids (T2Cs), called the BL Herculis (BLHs), in the Galactic Field to derive a homogeneous analysis of their Fourier parameters. Only V-band data were compiled to make sure that it was directly comparable between the known variables of the OGLE-III catalogue and the 59 individual objects classified as short period Type II Cepheids in the General Catalogue of Variable Stars (GCVS) we had in our sample. The derived Fourier parameters were used to make the distinction between different classes of variables. From the 59 stars we found 19 BLHs, 19 fundamental mode Anomalous Cepheids (ACs) (8 of them were already known from the Catalina Sky Survey (CSS)), 1 first overtone AC, 2 were found to be possible peculiar W Virginis (pWVir), 11 classical Cepheids (DCEPs), and 7 stars were not pulsating variables at all. As a result we created a list of bright BLH stars in the Galactic Field, and separated the ACs, as well as other objects that were misclassified. The number of true BLHs decreased in our sample by more than 50%. We gathered the metallicity from spectroscopic measurements published in the literature. While the number of actual measurements is low, it is highly suggestive that ACs are metal poor. The mean metallicity from 8 measurements in 4 stars (UY Eri having 5 different [Fe/H] data points) is -1.12 dex, but if the higher value metallicity outliers of UY Eri are left out the mean metallicity becomes -1.88 dex, regardless if the AC is in the Milky Way itself or in a cluster. On the other hand, BLHs seem to have a Solar-like metallicity of 0 dex averaged from 21 measurements of 10 stars., Comment: 23 pages, 10 figures
