Mardin hosts a rich archaeological and cultural heritage in Southeastern Anatolia. Although systematic archaeological research in the region began in the 1960s, the first excavations were not conducted until the 1980s. Subsequently, research was carried out under constrained conditions for many years; however, from 2005 onwards, extensive investigations commenced in Mardin and its districts as part of hydroelectric dam projects, with the collaboration of the Artuklu University's Department of Archaeology and Art History, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, museum directorates, and other researchers. This study examines the ministry and rescue excavations, as well as inventory studies, focusing primarily on Anatolian archaeology, particularly that of Southeastern Anatolia and the province of Mardin. The findings of these investigations underscore the historical and cultural significance of the region's archaeological remains, demonstrating that Mardin has been home to various cultures from prehistoric to the Islamic periods. However, these scholarly investigations and excavations have also brought to light the damage inflicted on archaeological sites due to dam constructions, uncontrolled infrastructure developments, illegal excavations, and natural causes. Consequently, it is anticipated that this research will provide a meaningful contribution to academic discourse in the fields of cultural heritage and humanities. It calls for heightened awareness and conscientious efforts to preserve the values that will be bequeathed to future generations, emphasizing once again the critical importance of protecting these cultural assets.
