Bu çalışmanın amacı, Türkiye'nin kuzey sahilindeki Bartın ili için fon radyoaktivite düzeylerini belirlemek ve ilgili sağlık risklerini değerlendirmektir. Bu amaçla toplanan toprak örnekleri gama spektrometresi yöntemi ile analiz edilmiş, dış ortamdaki gama doz oranları yerinde ölçümlerle araştırılmış ve toplanan içme suyu örnekleri gaz akışlı orantılı sayaç ile analiz edilmiştir. Topraktaki 226Ra, 232Th, 40K ve 137Cs radyonüklitlerinin ortalama aktivitesi, Bartın ili için sırasıyla 20.2 ± 7.3, 26.9 ± 10.5, 445 ± 175, 6.4 ± 6.4 Bq kg-1 olarak belirlenmiştir. Bölge için ortalama yerden 1 m yükseklikte havada absorbe edilen gama doz hızı, 56 ± 15 nGy h-1 olarak ölçülmüştür. İçme suyu için ortalama toplam alfa ve beta aktivitesi sırasıyla 0.039 ± 0.048 ve 0.135 ± 0.403 BqL-1 olarak bulunmuştur. Bölgede yaşayanlar için kozmik, karasal radyasyonlar ve sudaki alfa-beta aktivitesine bağlı ortalama yıllık efektif doz değerleri, sırasıyla, 0.03 ± 0.01, 0.04 ± 0.01 ve 0.02 ± 0.03 mSv olarak hesaplanmıştır. Her bir radyolojik parametrenin bölge için çizilen dağılım haritası makalede sunulmaktadır. The average gross alpha and beta activity for drinking water were found to be 0.039±0.048 and 0.135±0.403 Bq L-1 respectively. The average annual effective dose value due to cosmic, terrestrial radiations and alpha-beta activity in water was calculated as 0.03±0.01, 0.04±0.01 and 0.02±0.03 mSv respectively for people living in the region. Spatial distribution map of each radiologic parameter plotted for the region is presented in the paper.

The aim of this study was to determine natural radioactive and heavy element concentrations in Mersin drinking water samples before the commissioning of the Akkuyu nuclear power plant and to collect data for possible environmental contaminations in the future. Drinking water samples were taken from the provincial center, districts, and populated villages. The annual effective dose of natural radionuclides and cancer risks were calculated for each person living in the city. Hazard index and cancer risk were calculated, which were caused by heavy elements. Mean gross alpha and beta radioactivity concentrations in drinking water were 0.059 Bq/L and 0.120 Bq/L, respectively. The annual cumulative effective dose for people was 30.83 $\mu $Sv. Average estimated excess cancer risk related to this exposure was 16.9 $\times $ 10$^{-5}$. Mean metal concentrations of Cr, Ni, Zn, Cu, Ba, and Cd in drinking water were 1.33, 4.65, 54.8, 11.1, 26.3, and 0.36 $\mu $g/L, respectively. Pb and As were lower than the detection limits. Mean calculated hazard index depending on heavy metal concentration was 6.8 $\times $ 10$^{-1}$ for drinking water. Cancer risks of heavy metals decreased in the order of Cd $>$ Cr $>$ Ni for the region.

Therefore, this study comprise whole of the province. Drinking water samples were taken from provincial center, districts and populated villages. Water samples were analysed to determine radioactivity and heavy metals concentrations. The annual effective dose equivalent taken from natural radioactive substances and cancer risks were calculated for each people living in the city. In addition, Hazar Index (HI) and cancer risk were calculated, which were caused by heavy elements. The mean gross alpha and beta radioactivity concentrations in drinking water were measured 0.059±0.051 Bq/L and 0.120±0.095 Bq/L, respectively. The annual cumulative effective dose for people was found as 30.83 μSv and the average estimated excess cancer risk related this exposure was calculated as 16.9×10-5. Also, mean metal concentration of Cr, Ni, Zn, Cu, Ba and Cd in drinking water were determined as 1.33, 4.65, 54.8, 11.1, 26.3, 0.36 μg/L, respectively. Pb and As in all water samples were determined lower than detection limits (LDL). The hazard quotient (HQ) of heavy metals was decreased in the order of Cd > Cr > Cu > Ni > Zn > Ba in water. Mean calculated Hazard Index (HI) depending heavy metal concentration is found to be 6.8×10-1 for drinking water. Cancer risks of heavy metals are decreased in the order of Cd > Cr > Ni for the region.

TENMAK D.N.. 10552 Bu çalışma, Türkiye’nin il bazında doğal fon haritasının hazırlanmasını, toprak yapısının radyolojik yönden değerlendirilmesini, içme sularında doğal radyoaktivite değerlerinin tespit edilmesini, toprak ve su örneklerinde eser ve toksik element analizlerinin yapılmasını ve ilgili kaynaklardan toplumun maruz kaldığı yıllık etkin dozun tespit edilmesini amaçlayan “Çevresel radyolojik izleme ve dozimetrik değerlendirme yapılması” faaliyeti kapsamında yürütülen çalışmaların düzenli aralıklarla sunulacak olan teknik raporlar serisinin İkincisidir ve Antalya, Nevşehir, Karaman, Hatay ve Artvin illerinin sonuçlarını içermektedir. Sonuçlar incelendiğinde; • Antalya, Nevşehir, Karaman ve Hatay illerinde ortalama dış ortam radyasyon doz hızı değerlerinin Türkiye ve Dünya ortalamalarına yakın iken Artvin ilinde bu oranın yaklaşık 3 katı olduğu, • Toprak örneklerinde yapılan radyonüklit ve radyoaktivite analizleri sonucu, Nevşehir ilinde toprak yapısından kaynaklı olarak K-40, Ra-226 ve Th-232 doğal radyonüklitlerin radyoaktivite seviyelerinin ortalamanın üzerinde olduğu, Artvin ilinden alınan toprak örneklerinde ise belirli lokasyonlarda yapay bir radyonüklit olan Cs- 137 nin 200 Bq/kg gibi yüksek değerlere çıktığı, yine aynı il topraklarında Ra-226 radyonüklitinin aktivite değerlerinin ortalamanın üzerinde olduğu, diğer illerden alınan örneklerde herhangi bir anomaliye rastlanmadığı, • İçme suyu örneklerinde yapılan radyoaktivite analizleri sonucu Nevşehir ilinde 5 farklı noktada toplam alfa, 1 noktada ise toplam beta radyoaktivite değerlerinin Dünya Sağlık Örgütü (WHO) tarafından belirlenen sınır değerleri aştığı, • Toplanan toprak örnekleri üzerinde “Toprak Kirliliğinin Kontrolü Yönetmeliği” ne göre yapılan eser element analiz değerlendirme sonuçlarına göre illerde belirli lokasyonlarda sınır değerlerin aşıldığı, • İçme suyu örnekleri için yapılan anyon ve katyon değerleri sonuçlarının, EPA, WHO, Kanada, EEC ve TS 266 İçme Suyu Standartları ile mukayese edildiğinde başta Nevşehir ve Artvin olmak üzere çok sayıda istasyonda kullanılmasında ve tüketilmesinde sakınca görülen noktaların belirlendiği, anlaşılmaktadır. Yukarıda ifade edilen analiz sonuçları rapor içerisinde tablolar, grafikler ve eşdeğer değişim haritalandırma yöntemleri kullanılarak görselleştirilmiş ve kolay anlaşılabilir formatta sunulmaya çalışılmıştır. Ayrıca illere ait ayrıntılı analiz sonuçları incelenen noktanın konum ve koordinat bilgileri EK dosyalarda sunulmuştur. This study is the second of a series of technical reports which will be presented at regular intervals and aims to present a natural radiological background map of Turkey's provinces, radiological evaluation of the soil contents, natural radioactivity levels in drinking water. It also contains trace and toxic element analyses of soil and water samples from these provinces. The annual effective community radiation dose from these sources are calculated. These activities were carried out under the “Environmental radiological monitoring and dosimetric evaluation” program of Çekmece Nuclear Research and Training Centre. This report includes results for Antalya, Nevşehir, Karaman, Hatay and Artvin provinces. Upon a through investigation of the results the following conclusion were drawn: • Radioactivity concentration values of the mean ambient gamma dose rates of province of Antalya, Nevşehir, Karaman and Hatay is close to the global and Turkey average measurements although values in the province of Kars is about 3 times the average, • According to the radionuclides and radioactivity analysis results of the soil samples in these 5 provinces, the radioactivity levels of the natural radionuclides K-40, Ra-226, and Th-232 are above the Turkey and global average in Nevşehir, at the some locations in Artvin the radioactivity level of the Cs-137 artificial radionuclide goes up to 200 Bq/kg and also Ra-226 levels in soil are higher than Turkey average. There were no significant abnormalities in samples taken from other provinces. • The radioactivity analysis results of drinking water from Nevşehir, show that the values of the total alpha activity at 5 different locations and total beta activity at 1 location exceed the limit values set by World Health Organization (WHO), • According to results from the assessment on the "Soil Pollution Control Regulation", the trace element analysis on the collected soil samples, the limit values are exceeded at certain locations in some provinces, • When the results of anion and cation values for the drinking waters samples are compared with the EPA, WHO, Canada, EEC and TS 266 as Drinking Water Levels in several locations proves to be unsuitable for drinking. The results of the above-mentioned analyses are visualized using tables, graphs and equivalent level mapping methods for a clearer presentation of the data. The coordinates of the sampling locations and detailed information about the analysis results are given in the annexes.

Bu çalışma da radyoterapi doz kontrolü amacıyla yapılan TLD ışınlamalarında kullanılmak üzere özel bir TLD tutucu dizayn edilmiş ve elde edilen sonuçlar IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) tarafından tavsiye edilen yöntem olan plastik kova içerisine yerleştirilmiş IAEA TLD tutucu sonuçları ile karşılaştırılmıştır. Çalışmada toz TLD-100 kullanılmış ve TLD tozu ile doldurulmuş kapsüller önerdiğimiz yeni TLD tutucu ile RW3 tipi katı fantomda Co-60 ışınları ile ışınlanmıştır. TLD absorbe doz ölçümleri Harshaw 4500 model TLD okuyucu sistemi ile okunmuş ve sonuçlar 0.6 cc iyonizasyon odası ile doğrulanmıştır. Farklı ışınlama şartlarında verilen 2 Gy radyasyon dozuna en yakın değerlerin yeni TLD tutucu (2.022+ 0.017cGy) ile elde edildiği görülmüştür. Standard IAEA su fantomu, plastik kova set-up' ları için ortalama ve standart sapma değerleri sırası ile 2.014+0.024 cGy, 1.948+0.062cGy, olarak tespit edilmiştir. Hastane şartlarında plastik kova set-up'ı için maksimum ortalama mutlak fark (%3.5) ve maksimum % hata (% 3.16) iken, yeni TLD tutucu set-up'ın da bu değerler sırası ile %1.32 ve % 0.86 dır. Bizim düşüncemize göre, değerlerimiz arasındaki bu uyum yeni TLD tutucu sayesinde tekrar edilebilen TLD pozisyonlarıdır. Bu çalışma standart olmayan ışınlama koşulları olması durumunda SSDL (Secondary Standard Dosimetry Laboratory) ve hastane doz sonuçları arasında önemli farklar olabileceğini göstermiştir., In present study, a special TLD holder inserted to a solid water phantom for TLD irradiation was designed and results were compared with the TLD results irradiated in a plastic bucked usingInternational Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), standard TLD holder as recommended by IAEA. Powder TLD-100 was used in the study and the capsules filling powder TLD were irradiated using Co-60 beams in RW3 type solid phantom with new holder. The absorbed dose measurements for TLD were performed by Harshaw 4500 model TLD reader and the results were confirmed using a 0.6 cc ionization chamber in RW3 plastic phantom. For different irradiation setup, the closest dose values to the prescribed dose of 2 Gy were only obtained with using the new TLD holder (2.022+ 0.017cGy) with lowest error value. The average and standard deviation for standard IAEA water phantom and plastic bucked set-up were 2.014+0.024 cGy and 1.948+0.062cGy respectively. While the maximum average absolute difference (%3.5) and the maximum % error (%3.16) were found in the hospital condition with bucket filled with water, the minimum average absolute difference and the minimum % error were %1.32 and %0.86 respectively, with our new TLD holder in the solid water phantom . In our opinion, the reason of this good consistency is the reproducibility of TLD position that created by means of our TLD holder. This study shows that non-standard conditions may cause important differences between SSDL (Secondary Standard Dosimetry Laboratory) and hospital dose results.

Sonuçlar incelendiğinde; • Mersin Karabük İğdır ve Bartın illeri toprak örnekleri radyoaktivite konsantrasyon değerleri ve dış ortam gama doz hızları ortalamaları Türkiye ve Dünya ortalamalarına yakın olmakla birlikte özellikle Kars ili ölçümlerinin dünya ortalamasının yaklaşık 2,5 katı civarında olduğu, • 5 ile ait içme suyu örneklerinde, toplam alfa aktivite sonuçlarının hepsinin, WHO tarafından, belirlenen, 0,5 Bq/L değerinden düşük olduğu, toplam beta aktivite konsantrasyonlarının ise, sadece Karabük iline ait bir noktada, sınır değeri 1 Bq/L aştığı, • Toplanan toprak örnekleri üzerinde “Toprak Kirliliğinin Kontrolü Yönetmeliği” ne göre yapılan eser element analiz değerlendirme sonuçlarına göre illerde belirli lokasyonlarda sınır değerlerin aşıldığı, bu değerlerin MTA’nın ilgili bölgeler için düzenlemiş olduğu raporlarla uyum içerisinde olduğu, • İçme suyu örnekleri için yapılan anyon ve katyon değerleri sonuçlarının, EPA, WHO, Kanada, EEC ve TS 266 İçme Suyu Standartları ile mukayese edildiği ve kullanılmasında ve tüketilmesinde sakınca görülen noktaların belirlendiği anlaşılmaktadır. These activities carried out under the programs of the “Environmental radiological monitoring and dosimetric evaluation”. In this report the results are presented for the Mersin, Kars, İğdır, Bartın and Karabük provinces. When examining the results; • Radioactivity concentration values of the soil samples and the mean ambient gamma dose rates of province of Karabük, Mersin, İğdır and Bartin is close to the global and Turkey average measurements although province of Kars is about 2,5 times the world average, • In all drinking water samples belongs to the 5 provinces, a total alpha activity of the results are lower than 0,5 Bq /L which determined by the WHO, the total beta activity concentrations exceeded boundary value of 1 Bq /L, only at one point at Karabük province, • According to results from the assessment on the "Soil Pollution Control Regulation", the trace element analysis on the collected soil samples, the limit values are exceeded at some specific locations in some provinces and these values are consistent with the results of the value of the MTA reports which was held at respective zones, • The results of anion and cation values for the drinking waters samples are compared with the EPA, WHO, Canada, EEC and TS 266 as Drinking Water Standards and determined inconvenience locations for the use and to consume, are understood. The results of the analysis above-mentioned are visualized using tables, graphs and equivalent exchange mapping methods for the present easily understandable format at the report. It also points to detailed analysis results belongs to the provinces including of the examined location and coordinate informations are is presented in appendix files.

I. Avrasya Nükleer Bilimler ve Uygulamaları Konferansı : 23-27 Ekim 2000. İzmir, Türkiye. Liquid scintillation techniques provide the detection and quantification of alpha and beta emitters in aqueous sample. Liquid Scintillation Counter (LSC) techniques using Pulse Decay Analysis (PDA) allow counting of alpha and beta radiation in the same sample simultaneously. PDA uses special pulse decay time discrimination electronics to differentiate alpha pulses from beta pulses in a liquid scintillator. In this experiment, Packard Tricarb 2770 TR-SL LSC has been used. Ultima Gold LLT produced by Packard Instrument Company was used as the liquid scintillator. The optimum counting parameters and Pulse Decay Discriminator (PDD) settings were provided for the best alpha and beta separation. PDD was verified by counting a pure alpha 241 Am and a pure beta 36C1. Spill of beta in alpha and alpha in beta was found around 0.1% at the optimum discriminator setting of 139. The counting efficiencies were 100% and 97% for alpha and beta counting respectively. Water samples were pre-concentrated to achieve the Turkish maximum permissible levels of 0.037 BqL -1 for gross alpha radioactivity and 0.37 BqL 1 for gross beta radioactivity in drinking water. After counting, the alpha and beta spill corrections were made and the gross alpha and beta radioactivities were calculated. LSC method results were compared with the gas flow proportional counters.

Bu çalışmada genel olarak çevresel doğal kaynaklarda bulunan doğal radyoaktivite değerlerinin veya doğal radyonüklit konsantrasyonlarının tayin edilmesi ve bu doğal kaynaklardan yayınlanan farklı tipteki radyasyonların ölçülmeleri ile de bir yerin veya bölgenin doğal temel radyasyon seviyelerinin tespit edilmesi amaçlanmıştır. Bunun için İstanbul şehri seçilmiş ve şehir radyolojik açıdan ele alınarak incelenmiştir. Bölüm 2' de doğal radyoaktivitenin tanımı yapıldıktan sonra doğal radyonuklidlerin bulunduğu toprak su ve hava gibi doğal radyoaktivite ortamları ve çevresel doğal gama radyasyon kaynaklan hakkında teorik bilgiler verilmiştir. Bölüm 3' te çalışmanın amacını teşkil eden İstanbul şehri radyolojik açıdan ele alınmış, şehir toprağı, çevresinde bulunan deniz sulan ile halk içme suyu ihtiyacını sağlayan göller ve şehir şebeke sulan, şehrin yüzeye yakın atmosferinde bulunan doğal radyonuklidlerin aktivite konsantrasyonları ve halk taralından tüketilen gıdalardaki doğal radyoaktivite düzeyleri gama spektrometrik analiz yöntemiyle tespit edilmiştir. Ayrıca, şehir içinde ve çevresinde doğal gama radyasyon ölçümleri alınarak şehrin doğal temel radyasyon seviyesi belirlenmiştir. İstanbul evlerinde alınan radon ölçümleri ile yapı malzemelerinden kaynaklanan 222Rn konsantrasyonları tayin edilmiştir. İncelenen toprak, hava, su ve gıdalar gibi insan yaşamı için gerekli olan bu doğal ortamlarda bulunan doğal radyoaktif maddeler ve doğal radyasyon kaynaklarından insanın hangi oranlarda dozlara maruz kalındığı belirlenmiş ve yıllık etkin doz eşdeğerleri saptanmıştır. Natural radioactivity originates from extraterrestrial sources as weH as from radioactive elements in the earth crast. The radioactivity of the earth includes the primordial (terrestrial) radionucüdes such as ^`ü, ^'U, 232Th, *°K and `Rb. The majority of these are isotopes of the heavy elements. Terrestrial sources of radiation are the radionucKdes with very long half-life, which exist within the earth since its formation several billion years ago have not substantially decayed. Extraterrestrial sources orginate cosmic rays which come from outer space. Cosmic rays which have high energy entering in the earth's atmosphere from outer space are known as primary cosmic rays. Primary cosmic rays produce neutrons, protons, pions, kaons and cosmogenic nucüdes such as 3H, 7Be, 10Be, 22Na and Na when they interact with the nuclei of atoms present in the air. Cosmogenic radionuclides are known as secondary cosmic rays too. Natural radionuclides exist in soil, air,water, food and building materials. Penetrating radiations and radioactive materials pervade the natural environment. Main types of radiations are gamma rays, alpha and beta particles and neutrons. People exposure to terrestrial and extraterrestrial radiations during their life. The exposure of man to these radiations occurs from sources outside of the body (tbis is external exposure) and upon the decay of radionuclides taken into the body through ingestion and inhalation (this is internal exposure). Natural sources are very important for the assesment of radiation doses in man, because the natural ionizing radiation is the largest contributor to the annual effective döşe equivalent. The main objective of this study is to evaluate istanbul city from the point of radioligical view. For this purpose, it was determined natural concentration of radionuclides in soil samples taking from different areas of the city and hiçe sea water around the city, lake water which supply drinking water to the city, the atmosphere near to the surface of the city and foods. Additionally, yearly radiation doses from these sources taken by the people who living in istanbul was calculates. This study continued two years.Natural radioactivity in istanbul soil samples, Öne of the objectives of this study was to identify and determine natural radionuclides activity concentration in soil samples collected from 35 locations in and around the istanbul city. 105 soil samples were collected at 0-10 cm depth level. The samples were collected from uncultivated fields. The collected samples were weighed individually, dried, pulverized, homogenized and sieved to l mm mesh. Meshed soil samples were transfered to Marinelli beakers which have 1000 mi capacity. Soil samples are weighed and carefiılly sealed for 30 days to reach secular equilibrium of radium and radon and their respective progeny. After that ali soil samples were counted in a high resolution gamma-ray spectrometer to analyze radionuclides. The counting time for each sample and background was 50000 seconds. To calculate the concentrations of radionuclides, the detector eflSciency as a function of energy for the same counting geometry was considered. The concentrations of different radionuclides were calculated based on the measured detector efficiency. Radionuclides which are present in İstanbul soil samples are 226Ra, 214Pb and 214Bi wbich are from *`U series and ^Ac, 212Pb, 212Bi and ^Tl which are from ^Th series

Hatay sınırlarında doğal çevresel radyoaktivite ölçümlerini gerçekleştirmek üzere;su ve toprak numuneleri toplanıp laboratuvara taşınmıştır. Bununla birlikte havadaki gama dozu da ölçülüp kaydedilmiştir. Bu amaçla; toplanan 39 farklı su numunesinin brüt alfa ve brüt beta aktivite konsantrasyonları 10 kanallı düşük seviye sayıcıyla tesbit edilip kaydedilmiştir. İkinci aşamada; Hatay sınırlarında 55 farklı toprak numunesinin aktivite konsantrasyonları hesaplanmıştır. Numuneler TAEK- Çekmece Nükleer Araştırma ve Eğitim Merkezi tesislerinde gama spektrometri sistemi ile analiz edilmiştir. Son olarak; 215 farklı noktada havadaki gama dozu ölçülmüş ve tablo halinde kayıtlara geçmiştir. Sonunda, Hatay sınırlarında yaşayan insanlara; su, toprak ve hava yoluyla ulaşabilecek risk tesbiti yapmak üzere, yıllık efektif doz hesaplanmıştır. In order to evaluate the natural environmental radioactivity measurements around Hatay; water and soil samples were picked around this region and carried to laboratuary. Near by, exposure gamma doses in air, were also measured and noted. In that case; the gross Alpha and Beta activity concentrations of the collected 39 different water samples were counted by ten channels low level counter and recorded. In the second step; totally 55 different samples were collected from all around of Hatay to determine the activity concentration in soil samples. These samples were analysized by gamma spectrometry system in CNAEM. Finally; the exposured gamma dose rates in airwere measured from 215 different points and the results were given in the respective tables. At last to check any risk comes from water, soil and air; the annual effective doses were obtained for human lives in HATAY region. 112
