Annual-scale environmental and ecosystem changes since the mid-19th century were reconstructed in a seasonally frozen lagoon, Lake Mokoto, located along the Okhotsk Sea coast of Hokkaido, northern Japan. X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and diatom analyses of laminated sediment were conducted to determine the impact of short-term climate oscillations and anthropogenic eutrophication on the lagoon ecosystem. In this lagoon, eutrophication has progressed since the early 20th century due to deforestation and human activity in the catchment area, such as development of the cattle industry and field agriculture. In particular, the sedimentation rate of Lake Mokoto and potassium and phosphorus contents of lake sediment have increased rapidly since 1970, in association with an increase in the number of cattle. In addition, the Lake Mokoto ecosystem shows interannual and decadal cyclic fluctuations that are separate from the anthropogenic effects. Prior to anthropogenic eutrophication, the nutrient condition of Lake Mokoto showed a close relationship with the Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO). Detailed diatom records within core sediments from Maeho Lagoon along the Eastern coast of South Korea revealed that the ecological dynamics of the lagoon during the Holocene were associated with relative sea level and regional precipitation. Accelerator mass spectrometry ( AMS) 14 C dating indicates that sediment accumulation began prior to 8300 cal. year BP, and that the lagoon formed around 8000 cal. year BP. The salinity level of the lagoon increased until 5000 cal. year BP, and then decreased. Long-term trends in salinity were dependent upon changes in sea level: periods of high salinity in the lagoon were generally coincident with periods of high sea levels along the east coasts of Korea and Japan. On the other hand, multicentennial-scale fluctuations in diatom assemblages and magnetic susceptibility ( MS) suggest that a 400 year fluctuation in salinity was regulated by changes in precipitation in the area of this lagoon. Changes in the westerly jet stream, controlled by variation in solar irradiance, had an important influence on precipitation volume in South Korea, suggesting that the patterns of the westerly jet stream fluctuate on a 400 year cycle. This study reconstructs a record of typhoon frequency over the Korean Peninsula during the mid-Holocene using mineral components and diatom assemblages in deposits of Lagoon Hyangho, located on the east coast of the peninsula. The lagoon deposits confirm the occurrence of cyclical, multi-centennial scale episodes of low salinization induced by typhoon-derived heavy rain. Although shifts in typhoon frequency broadly follow El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) conditions during the Holocene, evidence from the typhoon-induced deposits in Hyangho Lagoon suggests that the path of the polar westerly jet controls the effect of ENSO on multi-centennial-scale typhoon patterns across the mid-latitude region of East Asia. The influence of ENSO is limited when the westerly jet passes through low latitudes. Fluctuations in solar activity play a key role in regulating movement of the westerly jet. Accurate prediction of future climate requires an understanding of the mechanisms of the Holocene climate; however, the driving forces, mechanisms, and processes of climate change in the Holocene associated with different time scales remain unclear. We investigated the drivers of Holocene sea surface temperature (SST) and sea ice extent in the North Pacific Ocean, and the Okhotsk and Bering Seas, as inferred from sediment core records, by using the alkenone unsaturation index as a biomarker of SST and abundances of sea ice-related diatoms (F. cylindrus and F. oceanica) as an indicator of sea ice extent to explore controlling mechanisms in the high-latitude Pacific. Temporal changes in alkenone content suggest that alkenone production was relatively high during the middle Holocene in the Okhotsk Sea and the western North Pacific, but highest in the late Holocene in the eastern Bering Sea and the eastern North Pacific. The Holocene variations of alkenone-SSTs at sites near Kamchatka in the Northwest Pacific, as well as in the western and eastern regions of the Bering Sea, and in the eastern North Pacific track the changes of Holocene summer insolation at 50°N, but at other sites in the western North Pacific, in the southern Okhotsk Sea, and the eastern Bering Sea they do not. In addition to insolation, other atmosphere and ocean climate drivers, such as sea ice distribution and changes in the position and activity of the Aleutian Low, may have systematically influenced the timing and magnitude of warming and cooling during the Holocene within the subarctic North Pacific. Periods of high sea ice extent in both the Okhotsk and Bering Seas may correspond to some periods of frequent or strong winter-spring dust storms in the Mongolian Gobi Desert, particularly one centered at ~4-3 thousand years before present (kyr BP). Variation in storm activity in the Mongolian Gobi Desert region may reflect changes in the strength and positions of the Aleutian Low and Siberian High. We suggest that periods of eastward displacement or increased intensity of the Aleutian Low correspond with times of increased extent of sea ice in the western Okhotsk Sea and eastern Bering Sea. The western coast of the Korean Peninsula has some of the highest tidal ranges in the world. Gomso Bay, located along the western coast of Korea, is a semi-enclosed embayment. Tidal deposits occur under most lowland rural areas along Gomso Bay. In this study, the diatom assemblage and grain size distributions of surface sediments along a tributary of Gomso Bay called Jujin Stream were examined to identify their relationships with tidal levels. Consequently, riverside sediments of Jujin Stream could be separated into four tidal level zones based on their diatom assemblage and grain size distribution. Clear diatom and grain size distribution gaps were found between the tidal (zones 1 and 2), fluvio-tidal transition (zone 3), and freshwater (zone 4) zones. The tidal zone was characterized by allochthonous marine diatom taxa. These marine taxa, and the sand content, gradually decreased in the upstream direction. Sediment in the fluvio-tidal transition zone has particularly distinctive features. Extremely high numbers of diatoms are present, which are dominated by freshwater taxa, with rare marine and marine-brackish taxa. Grain sizes in this zone increase sharply in the upstream direction. Abstract: Diatom fossils from core sediments and living diatoms from water samples of Notoro Lagoon in northern Japan were examined to evaluate natural climate effects on lagoon environmental changes. In 1974, the artificial inlet was excavated. Immediately after, the anoxic bottom water in Notoro Lagoon began to disappear due to an increasing water exchange rate. However, chemical oxygen demand (COD) in the bottom water of Notoro Lagoon gradually increased, with fluctuations, during the last 30 years. In addition, the dominant diatom assemblages in Notoro Lagoon shifted to ice-related and spring bloom taxa after the excavation. The dominant taxa of each year in the sediment core were also strongly related to the timing of lagoon ice melting. This is because the COD in Notoro Lagoon was affected by the deposited volume of blooming diatoms, which was controlled by the duration of ice cover and the timing of ice discharge to the Okhotsk Sea likely due to an air pressure pattern change over the northern North Pacific like the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO). Abstract: Sea-ice diatom taxa (Fragilariopsis cylindrus and Fragilariopsis oceanica) and their relative abundance in the Okhotsk Sea were used to reconstruct the history of sea-ice distribution and atmospheric pressure patterns since the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). The temporal state of sea-ice distribution and atmospheric pressure patterns since the LGM can be divided into three modes: northern Aleutian Low mode, southern Aleutian Low mode, and strong Siberian High mode. The Southern Aleutian Low mode was dominant before 15ka and after 6.5ka, respectively, showing expanded sea-ice distribution into the central and southern Okhotsk Sea. During the deglaciation period (15ka to 10ka), sea-ice retreated from the southern Okhotsk Sea because of the pronounced westerly winds under the strong Siberian High mode. However, sea-ice distribution expanded in the northern Okhotsk Sea, which favors the development of extensive polynyas on the northern continental shelf. Occurrences of northern Aleutian Low mode were frequent between 10 and 6.5ka, while sea-ice distribution expanded into the eastern Okhotsk Sea. Detailed diatom records within surface and core sediments from the Southern Bering Continental Shelf (SBCS) reveal that the Holocene evolution of sea-ice distribution is associated with low pressure patterns. Holocene sea-ice distribution over the SBCS was mainly controlled by the location of the Aleutian Low. The corresponding paleoceanographic and paleoclimate conditions can be divided into three stages: (1) the early Holocene (before 7000 cal. yr BP) was characterized by extensive sea-ice distribution under two low-pressure cells, which covered the western Bering Sea and the Gulf of Alaska, respectively. (2) Between 3000 and 7000 cal. yr BP, the low-pressure system over the Gulf of Alaska became weak, causing total sea-ice mass over the SBCS to retreat. (3) In the past 3000 years, prevailing southwesterly winds over the SBCS due to the developing Aleutian Low have reduced further sea-ice cover on the SBCS. These paleoclimatic changes were probably a response to ENSO variation. The timings of water mass exchanges on the SBCS coincided with sea-level change along the Alaskan Peninsula. As a result, subsequent morphologic alterations have also influenced the paleoceanographic condition of the SBCS. Diatoms were obtained on three different circumstances, sea-ice, sea-water, and diatom mat samples, at four different locations in the central Arctic Ocean during August and September 2004. One hundred twenty diatom taxa belonging to 38 genera, 14 of which were centric and 22 of which were pennate, were recognized in these samples. Even within the same circumstances, the diatom community exhibits changes through time. The genus Chaetoceros Ehrenberg 1844 (mainly C. sociale Lauder 1864) showed high relative abundance (>90%) in sea water samples collected on 25 August and 7 September, whereas Chaetoceros species were rare or absent in each of the samples collected on 12 and 14 August. In the samples of 12 and 14 August, diatom assemblages showed higher diversity than the samples of 25 August and 7 September. Pennate diatoms such as genera Fragilariopsis Hustedt in Schmidt 1913, Navicula Bory de Saint-Vincent 1822, and Nitzschia Hassall 1845, were common in the samples of 12 and 14 August. Abstract: Diatom assemblages of the surface and in core sediment samples from Lake Saroma (Japan) were examined for the purpose of evaluating anthropogenic effect on the coastal environmental changes. Before the first inlet excavation, the lake''s water quality and ecology were controlled by water exchange with the Okhotsk Sea as well as lake-level variation. However, large-scale ecological modification occurred, mainly due to artificial excavation and shellfish industrial farms. A distinct record of the succession of the dominant diatom taxa was preserved in core sediments. Low-oxygen water was prevalent in the lake in 1929, before the first inlet excavation. Immediately after the first inlet excavation, the low-oxygen water in the western basin of the lake began to disappear, in a trend that became increasing transparent, which has been attributed to an increasing rate of water exchange. However, the lacustrine environment of bottom sediments resumes deterioration 20years after since the first artificial excavation: the resultant deposition of river-mouth materials into the deep basin caused eutrophication and environmental disturbance of the lake bottom. At the same time, the eutrophication of surface water became intensified with the onset of intense scallop culturing beginning in 1966. Increasing organic loads deposited onto the bottom layer in the form of excreta from the scallop nursery led to more oxygen deficiency and the elution of nitrogen and phosphorus from the sediment, which again brought about eutrophication of the surface layer. Such environmental change was reflected in a decrease of benthic diatom taxa and an increase of planktonic taxa, trends which have continued until today. Particularly, the numbers of diatom assemblage have been decreasing all over the lake during the last 10years, which suggests that Lake Saroma''s present-day deterioration and eutrophication will continue or become even worse. Abstract: Diatom assemblages in suspended particulate matter (SPM), surface sediments, and piston core samples in the southern Bering Sea and the western subarctic Pacific were examined. The distribution of diatom assemblages in the southern Bering Sea shows not only differences in species composition between the SPM and surface sediment samples, but also preferential dissolution of different species in the upper water column or surface sediments. Furthermore, we present the downcore profiles of selected diatom taxa for four piston cores to indicate changes in paleoceanographic conditions, e.g., seasonal productivity, sea-ice and surface-water circulation, of the glacial and deglaciation periods during the late Quaternary. In particular, we propose five models for the annual cycling of the water masses in the western subarctic Pacific and the southern Bering Sea during the late Quaternary. Significant regional differences in diatom accumulation rates and taxonomic composition between the southern Bering Sea and the western subarctic Pacific reflect spatial shifts in water masses caused by the variable extent of sea-ice cover and cold low-salinity surface waters in these regions. DNA metabarcoding (DNA-MB) targeting the whole plankton community is a promising approach in studies of sediment samples from water bodies, but its effectiveness in ancient material is not well demonstrated. We applied DNA-MB of plankton in a sediment core to reconstruct the paleo-environment of Lake Shinji, Japan, through a marine lagoon/freshwater lake transition during the past 2300 years. We interpreted core-sample plankton taxonomy and habitat by reference to the modern plankton community in water samples. OTUs (operational taxonomic units) belonging to Dictyochophyceae were 81.05% of the total reads in sediments. However, Ciliophora, Copepoda and Labyrinthulea formed the majority of plankton taxa in the water samples, suggesting that they are under-represented in sediment. A drastic change in plankton composition correlated with a large decrease in sediment sulfur concentration, implying the change of aquatic environment from marine lagoon to freshwater lake. This event took place ca. 1200 CE in Lake Shinji. A 250 year-long transitional period followed, during which the total DNA sequence reads were very low. This suggests that salinity fluctuations created a hostile environment for both marine and freshwater plankton species. To identify temporal changes in the marine reservoir effect in Northeast Japan, the radiocarbon ages of terrestrial plants and marine shells were measured from two cores obtained from Lake Harutori in Kushiro City. This lake located where one of the highest marine reservoir effect was detected in East Asia, facing the Oyashio cold current. This drilling site is situated in a tectonically active region of the southwestern Kuril arc. Based on lithological analyses, molluscan assemblages, and radiocarbon dating, we interpreted five units in order of decreasing age: basement coastal sediments, estuary sediment, laminated sediment, inner bay sediment, and artificial fills. These sediments consisted of laminated mud beds with terrestrial plant fragments and intercalating tsunami sand beds. The structure was imaged using core scanning computed tomography and X-ray fluorescence. Tracking paleoenvironmental change and past event deposits is very important to evaluate the natural hazard spatially. This paper presents how the environment changes and implies the event deposit depending on the diatom assemblage change. To investigate paleoenvironmental change and identify the difference between tsunami and typhoon deposits, we analyze diatoms from the sediments in two coastal lakes in southern Japan where flood deposits have been linked to historical typhoon and tsunami events (Lakes Kawahara and Ryuo). The sediment cores extend from B.C.E. 500 to approximately C.E. 1000 and the downcore variation in diatom assemblages indicates a series of transitions from saline to fresher conditions in both Lake Kawahara and Lake Ryuo between approximately C.E. 500 and 1700. We observe an obvious deviation in diatom assemblages in event deposits previously identified to be either of tsunami or typhoon in origin. For the most prominent event deposit preserved in Lake Ryuo by the Hoei tsunami of C.E. 1707, the deposition of marine diatoms serves as evidence of marine flooding, while the subsequent deposition of soil and freshwater diatoms indicates the mobilization of terrigenous sediment during returning seaward flows. In contrast, the most prominent event deposit in Lake Kawahara is associated with freshwater flooding by the Kamikaze typhoon of C.E. 1281 and contains very low diatom abundances and a peak of freshwater taxa, followed by a peak in diatom counts potentially due to greater biological activity induced by a resultant influx of nutrients and re‐oxygenation during the event. Fossil benthic foraminifera from five cores in the Nakdong River Delta (southeast Korea) were investigated to reveal paleoenvironmental changes across the middle/late Holocene transition, particularly focusing on ∼4 ka climatic event. Based on multi-dimensional scaling, benthic foraminifera are divided into (1) Marine taxa, (2) Bay taxa, and (3) Opportunistic taxa. Planktonic/total (benthic and planktonic) foraminiferal ratio decreased abruptly during 4.6–3.3 ka, and Nonionella stella was found commonly across ∼4 ka in core ND-01 (intermediate site among the five cores). These results imply that the ∼4 ka climatic event led to the stratification of less saline epilimnetic water underlain by more saline oxygen-poor hypolimnetic water in the Nakdong River Delta. This indicates temporal increase in precipitation in the Nakdong River drainage, which can be attributed to the intensified rainfall with the second Changma peak, associated with typhoons toward the Korean Peninsula. The small twin maxima of N. stella across ∼4 ka in core ND-01 were similar to those of the total sulfur contents in both Yeja Bay (southern Korea) and Lake Togo-ike (southwestern Japan). Such similarity in the stratigraphic patterns among the remote locations can be explained by the small-scale sea-level variations with the fluctuation of the Tsushima Warm Current, in addition to changes in precipitation. The common species of Haynesina sp. A was replaced by Elphidium somaense after ∼4.6 ka, which is likely due to the shift of passive dispersal as a result of the enhanced East Asian winter monsoon and/or the change in the westerly jet path. The Arctic Coring Expedition (ACEX) carried out in 2004 by the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) afforded us the opportunity to obtain seawater and sea-ice samples at four different times and locations including the North Pole in the central Arctic Ocean. We performed taxonomic and census investigation on extant silicoflagellates in the samples. Of the two silicoflagellate taxa observed in the central Arctic, Distephanus medianoctisol Takahashi et al. sp. nov dominates over 71% of total silicoflagellates and Distephanus speculum (Ehrenberg) Haeckel 1887 represents only 29% or less. Significantly different silicoflagellate assemblages and skeletal morphology from the Arctic sea-ice laden areas compared to those from open oceans outside of the Arctic were observed. During the summer, silicoflagellates actively grow in the central Arctic Ocean, as evidenced by considerable population densities even compared with those of the middle latitude open oceans. Active growth is supported by the number of observed double skeletons, which are good representation of active cell divisions. Underneath the pack ice, seawater of the central Arctic receives enough sunlight under midnight Sun conditions in summer, due to the presence of ice cracks and water puddles to provide sufficient photosynthetic energy to sustain silicoflagellate populations. The documented percentage occurrences of aberrant silicoflagellates (abnormal forms) are high when compared with those from the pelagic environments. Unusual forms with greater than one apical window (also considered as aberrant) are also noted and they may have been formed due to specific environmental conditions such as low temperature, the presence of sea-ice, and low light intensity (beneath sea-ice with snow accumulation). Abstract: High-resolution analyses of geochemical parameters (biogenic opal, calcium carbonate, organic carbon, and nitrogen) and microfossil assemblages (diatoms and radiolarians) on Core MD01-2412 clarified detailed paleoceanographic changes such as sea-ice cover and biological production in the southwestern Okhotsk Sea during the last 115kyr. An age model of Core MD01-2412 was established based on δ18O stratigraphy, accelerator mass spectrometer (AMS) 14C, and tephrochronology. Sea-ice history reconstructed by siliceous microplankton records indicated that the present sea-ice condition was formed during the last 8kyr. Only during Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 2 was the duration of sea-ice cover in this region much longer than that of today (4–5 months a year). Two diatom species, Thalassionema nitzschioides and Fragilariopsis doliolus, revealed that the Soya Warm Current Water (SWCW) flowed into the Okhotsk Sea near the site of Core MD01-2412 during the last 12–14kyr and during MIS 5a, and was associated with sea-level rise. Biological productivity rapidly increased during MIS 1, associated with sea-ice retreat. Two major increases of organic carbon (OC) contents (wt%) and Corg/N ratios were observed, and the timings of these events were 15.8–16.7ka (Event 1) and 13.1–13.6ka (Event 2). Corresponding to these events, the abundance of Cycladophora davisiana, an intermediate water dwelling radiolarian species, increased. This high C. davisiana abundance can be correlated to the input of terrestrial organic matter from the submerged shelf to the intermediate water. Apart from the radiolarians, the production of diatoms in the surface waters was suppressed by the development of well-stratified surface water along with sea-ice melting during the early Holocene. Paleoenvironment and paleoclimate changes during the Little Ice Age (LIA) were investigated using sediments from Lake Hamana. This lagoon in central Japan is under a complicated climate system influenced by the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM), East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM), and strong typhoon events. Diatom assemblages and chemical components of a 1.3 m sediment core suggest historical events of rapid salination and cyclical ecosystem shifts accompanied by monsoon condition changes. Most research has indicated that Lake Hamana changed from a freshwater lake to a brackish lagoon because of the Meio earthquake in 1498 CE. However, based on results from the diatom assemblage and chemical components, this salination occurred because of changes in the Hamana paleoriver flow, and this change happened before the earthquake, around the mid-15th century. Furthermore, it is clear that Lake Hamana was an oligohaline lagoon before salination. The lithology of the lake sediments and the diatom assemblage changed during the LIA; sand, water, and total diatom contents decreased. However, the relative abundance of marine diatom taxa increased during the LIA. These changes were introduced by a weakening EASM coupled with low precipitation under low solar activity during the LIA. Several flood events represented by freshwater diatom taxa and magnetic susceptibility peaks co-occurred with strong El Niño events during the LIA. Fossil benthic and planktonic foraminifera from a part of core ND-02 and the published data of core ND-01 from the Nakdong River delta, southeast Korea were analyzed to evaluate the impact of the Tsushima Warm Current on coastal environments in the Korea/Tsushima Strait between Korea and Japan during the early to middle Holocene. Based on cluster analysis, four sample clusters (A, B, C, and D), suggestive of a landward–seaward gradient of environmental conditions, can be defined. According to the spatio-temporal and cluster distributions of benthic foraminifera in faunal compositions, the landward occurrence of benthic foraminifera was delimited in the inner part of the Nakdong River delta at ∼8–7 ka. The common occurrence of warm-water planktonic foraminifera suggests that this maximum landward expansion of benthic foraminifera within the delta was caused by the intensification of the Tsushima Warm Current in addition to sea level rise during the early to middle Holocene. Changes in both marine biota and sedimentation were reported in the coastal areas of southwestern Japan in that period. They were also caused by a precursor of the enhanced Tsushima Warm Current at ∼8 ka. Thus, the evolution of the Tsushima Warm Current during the early to middle Holocene is important for understanding various phenomena in the coastal environments of the Korea/Tsushima Strait. Abstract: The East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) is a key component of the Asian Monsoon system affecting regional precipitation in East Asia and thus human culture, society, and development. Despite this, decadal‐ to centennial‐scale EASM dynamics remain poorly understood over the last millennium. Here we used high‐resolution benthic microfossil proxies to reconstruct EASM variability for the last 1,000 years from a brackish lake in South Korea. We compared this EASM record with Asian Monsoon proxy records from East China (i.e., continental proxy) and East Asian coasts (i.e., oceanic setting), and identified four pervasive EASM strengthening events at 1250, 1450, 1550, and 1900 CE and their deviation, likely related to land‐ocean temperature gradients. Our results indicate that data from the oceanic setting under the direct influence of the Pacific High are important in understanding the EASM dynamics over the last millennium. It is also noteworthy that EASM variability shows striking similarity to changes in the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation, implying the causal relationship. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We investigated fossil benthic and planktonic foraminifera in sediment cores FV10-05 and FV10-06-2, off Fukuoka, southwestern Japan to evaluate the impact of the Tsushima Warm Current on coastal environments around the strait between southeastern Korea and southwestern Japan during the early to middle Holocene. A cluster analysis of benthic foraminifera in these cores established four sample clusters (A, B, C, and D), which are interpreted as indicators of relatively high energy condition due to wave/current processes. Clusters A and C, characterized by attached taxa, became dominant at ∼6.6 ka. Such faunal changes are consistent with the current-influenced sedimentation, confirming that the Tsushima Warm Current reached its present-day distribution at that time. A hiatus at ∼8–7 ka has been reported in cores from deeper water off Fukuoka, whereas our shallow core shows deposition under high energy conditions was continuous even at ∼8–7 ka near the coast off river mouth. Across the strait, the maximum landward extent of benthic foraminifera occurred in the Nakdong River delta (southeastern Korea) in ∼8–7 ka, and an outer bay fauna of benthic foraminifera with seagrass beds occurred transiently in the restricted bay of the San-in district (southwestern Japan) at that time. The evolution of the Tsushima Warm Current during the early to middle Holocene thus appears to play an important role in coastal environments not only in the strait areas between southeastern Korea and southwestern Japan, but also in the San-in district. Five shell-gravel layers (2.2–2.9 m in elevation, 70 cm in thickness) formed by storm-induced rip currents along the southern coast of the Korean Peninsula over the past 1300 years are described. The three radiocarbon dates (S1–S3) and the two optically stimulated luminescence (S4 and S5) dates correspond well with the succession of the five shell-gravel layers. The age of S1, CE 720 ± 60, corresponds to the early Medieval Warm Period (MWP). The dates of the three overlying layers (S2–S4), CE 880 ± 110, 950 ± 70, and 995 ± 120, respectively, coincide with the middle MWP. The fifth date of the uppermost shell-gravel layer (S5), CE 1535 ± 40, coincides with the Little Ice Age (LIA) of Western Europe. The characteristics of shell habitats based on 16 shell species from each layer suggest that the first four layers formed in a slightly erosional to dominantly depositional environment during the MWP, whereas the youngest layer formed in a dominantly erosional environment during the LIA. Analyses of grain size distribution, magnetic susceptibility, and geochemistry of the sediments, and gravel morphology indicate that storm activity at this site during the MWP and LIA occurred within active storm periods in the western North Atlantic (WNA). Comparison of the five storm events and related climatic factors suggests that, although the typhoon track type at the site is similar to recurving tracks typical for El Niño conditions in North China and Japan, tracks during the MWP and LIA were likely shifted not only by changes in El Niño conditions but by other climatic factors such as sea surface temperature, the North Pacific High, and the westerly jet stream. The fluvial to marine transition zone (FMTZ) is the area of coastal rivers in which sedimentation is controlled by the interaction of fluvial and marine processes. This study examines the FMTZ of the Mekong River delta, along a total channel length of ~660 km. Methods consist of collection and analysis of channel bed sediment samples, measurements of channel morphological parameters, and recognition of mangrove, molluscan, and diatom species. The process regime, salinity, morphological, and sedimentary trends recognized were used to define two main tracts for this FMTZ: an upstream, fluvial-dominated tract and a downstream, tide-dominated tract. In more detail, they allow the identification of four subzones, from upstream to downstream: 1) fluvial-dominated, tide-affected; 2) fluvial-dominated, tide-influenced; 3) tide-dominated, fluvial-influenced; and 4) tide-dominated, fluvial-affected. Tide-induced water-level changes affect the entire study area and extend into Cambodia. Measured salinity intrusion extends ~15 km upstream of the river mouth during wet season, and ~50 km during dry season. Brackish water species of mangroves, mollusks, and diatoms, however, occur landward of these limits, suggesting that highly diluted brackish water may reach ~160 km upstream of the river mouth during the dry season. In the fluvial-dominated tract, channels are sinuous and show a seaward-deepening trend, whereas width is relatively constant. In the tide-dominated tract, channels are straight, and show seaward-widening and seaward-shallowing trends. Natural levees are present in the fluvial-dominated, tide-affected subzone, but are replaced by mangroves elsewhere along the FMTZ. In the fluvial-dominated tract, mud content is low, sand grain size fines seaward, and gravelly sand and sand are the dominant facies. In the tide-dominated tract, mud content is high, sand grain size is constant, recycled sand is common, and tidal rhythmites are the dominant facies. Mud pebbles are common in sediments throughout a large part of the FMTZ. These trends characterizing the FMTZ of the Mekong River delta seem to be present in other systems and likely represent a general FMTZ pattern. Nonetheless, minor differences may be observed between different types of systems, or because of differences in local conditions. The comprehensive description of trends and their mutual relationships along the FMTZ presented herein provides critical information that can form the basis of a general conceptual model and can help to better understand these complex zones. To detect long-term change in the reservoir effect of the eastern coast of Korea, we measured the radiocarbon ages of terrestrial plant and marine shell pairs from the same horizons from approximately 12 m of Holocene sediments under reclaimed land around the Mae-ho Lagoon. The lagoon sediment was examined for lithology, and sedimentary structures, as well as mollusk and diatom assemblages. From bottom to top the sediment comprised three units: transgressive lagoon, restricted lagoon, and delta. The offset in the radiocarbon age of nine pairs were also divided into three stages: 300 ± 90 to 410 ± 120 years (transgressive lagoon sediment in 7350–5800 cal BP), 640 ± 150 to 800 ± 150 years (restricted lagoon sediment in 4320–1600 cal BP), and 120 ± 140 to 330 ± 100 years (deltaic sediment in 1200–390 cal BP). The reservoir ages (R) in the sediments of transgressive lagoon and the restricted lagoon include the variation associated with dietary of shells, herbivorous and deposit-feeding, respectively. The R values in the deltaic lagoon sediment were the most representative of those in the Mae-ho Lagoon because they were obtained from the shells of a filter-feeding taxon, Potamocorbula amurensis , in the most recent sediment. These values from the deltaic lagoon sediment are also consistent with previously reported modern reservoir ages from the Korean Peninsula and Peter the Great Gulf around Vladivostok. The causes and succession of the Nakdong River delta formation related to sea-level change and precipitation in the early-middle Holocene were discussed based on diatom analysis. On the basis of ecology, stratigraphic changes of diatom flora were divided into five divisions, labeled zones I-V. According to the diatom assemblage, the first marine transgression occurred at about 10.5 ka at this research site. At that time, marine species gradually increased, and freshwater species had their highest values. This site was an estuary influenced by inputs of fresh and marine water until 9.8 ka (zone I). Zone II is dominated by bay and offshore species, meaning that sea level rose continuously after about 9.8 ka (zone II) when the Nakdong River mouth region was an inner bay. Then, the environment of this site changed to an outer bay after 8 ka (zone III) because of sea-level rise, which is supported by increasing numbers of oceanic species. At the end of this zone, at 6-7 ka, sea level highstand occurred. A prodelta began forming just after the highstand under slow sea-level rise (zone IV), and the delta front arrived at its present location at 5 ka by voluminous sediment input from the Nakdong River related to high precipitation during the Holocene Climate Optimum (zone V). After 5 ka, the delta front remained around its present site because of stable or decreasing sea level. Compared with other Asia deltas (Yangtze and Mekong), the initiation of the Nakdong River delta was delayed by about 1000-2000 years because of differences in relative sea-level changes. Abstract: A 58-m-long sediment core IMAGES MD01-2412 was recovered in the southwestern part of the Okhotsk Sea for high resolution paleocenography. An age model of the core was obtained by accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) 14C dating of planktonic foraminifer shells, oxygen–isotope stratigraphy of benthic foraminifer calcite, and tephrochronology, resulting in a core-bottom age of 115 kyr. Sea-ice expansion in the Okhotsk Sea was reconstructed by ice-rafted debris (IRD) based on measurement of dropstone, coarse fraction, sand fractions of terrigenous particles, and the magnetic properties. The SW Okhotsk Sea has not had perennial but seasonal sea-ice conditions during the 115 kyr. Seasonal sea ice fluctuated with large amplitudes on millennial scale during the glacials (Marine isotope stage: MIS 2, 3, and 4) and varied relatively little during the Holocene (MIS 1) and the last interglacial (MIS 5). Enhanced polar atmospheric circulation during the glacial resulted in strong wind fields over the Okhotsk Sea and accelerated the large sea-ice expansion during the glacials (MIS 2, 3, and 4). During the interglacials (MIS 1 and 5), sea ice also expanded by small amplitudes. During these periods, decrease of the Amur River discharge would be one of the possible factors for sea-ice expansion. Abstract: Changes in biological productivity of the Bering Sea have been evaluated for the late Quaternary based on biogenic opal, calcium carbonate, and microfossils in two piston cores. Biological productivity increased during Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 1 after the last glaciation. During the last deglaciation, two pronounced peaks of calcium carbonate content were observed at ca. 2400m water depth, which can be explained by the “CaCO3 compensation hypothesis” and coccolithophore blooms. Simultaneous with the CaCO3 peaks, oxygen-poor deep water was apparently distributed in the Aleutian Basin based on benthic foraminiferal assemblages. The low-O2 events seem to be related to deep-water circulation and/or elevated productivity in the northwest Pacific. After the CaCO3 peak events, biogenic opal contents and diatoms increased gradually, associated with enhanced vertical mixing with an inflow of the Alaskan Stream through the eastern Aleutian Arc passes.
