Most selective colleges implemented test-optional admissions during the pandemic, making college entrance exam scores optional for applicants. We draw on descriptive, two-way fixed effects, and event study methods to examine variation in test-optional implementation during the pandemic and how implementation relates to selectivity and enrollment. For "test-optional" colleges during the pandemic, we found substantial variation in policy type (e.g., test optional, test free) and whether the policy extended to all applicants and scholarship consideration. Findings suggest test-optional implementation related to increases in Black student enrollment, mostly at moderately selective colleges and when policies extended to all applicants and scholarships. At highly selective colleges, findings suggest test-optional implementation related to an increase in applications but not consistent gains in enrollment.

Letters of recommendation from school counselors are required to apply to many selective colleges and universities. Still, relatively little is known about how this non-standardized component may affect equity in admissions. We use cutting-edge natural language processing techniques to algorithmically analyze a national dataset of over 600,000 student applications and counselor recommendation letters submitted via the Common App platform. We examine how the length and topical content of letters (e.g., sentences about Personal Qualities, Athletics, Intellectual Promise, etc.) relate to student self-identified race/ethnicity, sex, and proxies for socioeconomic status. Paired with regression analyses, we explore whether demographic differences in letter characteristics persist when accounting for additional student, school, and counselor characteristics, as well as among letters written by the same counselor and among students with comparably competitive standardized test scores. We ultimately find large and noteworthy naïve differences in letter length and content across nearly all demographic groups, many in alignment with known inequities (e.g., many more sentences about Athletics among White and higher-SES students, longer letters and more sentences on Personal Qualities for private school students). However, these differences vary drastically based on the exact controls and comparison groups included -- demonstrating that the ultimate implications of these letter differences for equity hinges on exactly how and when letters are used in admissions processes (e.g., among which groups of students are they used to "break ties"?). Findings do not point to a clear recommendation whether institutions should keep or discard letter requirements, but reflect the importance of reading letters and overall applications in the context of structural opportunity. We discuss additional implications and possible recommendations for college access and admissions policy/practice.

There is a necessity for an educational shift to equip today's learners for success in a dynamically evolving world shaped by emerging technologies and globalization. Emphasizing the importance of academic and technical skills, this report stresses the need for learners to possess adaptability and interpretive abilities to apply these skills in diverse contexts. The "Portrait of the Graduate" initiative is introduced as a visionary framework where readers will learn more about the skillsets districts across the country have identified for students. Furthermore, this report will introduce readers to the design and implementation of "Integrated Learning Pathways'' as a strategy to breathe life into the Portrait of the Graduate and will provide examples of districts putting their Portraits into action. The report concludes with recommending district leaders to create Integrated Learning Pathways to align learning and initiatives to their Portrait of a Graduate and ultimately better prepare students for a successful future.

Elementary and secondary district leaders seeking to recruit teachers and diversify their teaching workforce will find useful, research-based strategies in this brief from the Region 4 Comprehensive Center. The brief focuses on ways to develop work-based learning programs in secondary schools that engage students in considering teacher careers. Drawing on insights from 14 programs, this brief summarizes five useful strategies of teacher-focused work-based learning programs, including targeted courses, cohort model and peer supports, strategic counseling, dual enrollment, and field experiences. It also provides helpful background into the historic challenges around recruiting and retaining teachers of color.

We present results from data acquired by the SENSEI experiment at SNOLAB after a major upgrade in May 2023, which includes deploying 16 new sensors and replacing the copper trays that house the CCDs with a new light-tight design. We observe a single-electron event rate of $(1.39 \pm 0.11) \times 10^{-5}$ e$^-$/pix/day, corresponding to $(39.8 \pm 3.1)$ e$^-$/gram/day. This is an order-of-magnitude improvement compared to the previous lowest single-electron rate in a silicon detector and the lowest for any photon detector in the near-infrared-ultraviolet range. We use these data to obtain a 90% confidence level upper bound of $1.53 \times 10^{-5}$ e$^-$/pix/day and to set constraints on sub-GeV dark matter candidates that produce single-electron events. We hypothesize that the data taken at SNOLAB in the previous run, with an older tray design for the sensors, contained a larger rate of single-electron events due to light leaks. We test this hypothesis using data from the SENSEI detector located in the MINOS cavern at Fermilab.

The most prominent of the IRAS debris disk systems, $\alpha$ Lyrae (Vega), at a distance of 7.7 pc, has been observed by both the NIRCam and MIRI instruments on the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). This paper describes NIRCam coronagraphic observations which have achieved F444W contrast levels of 3$\times10^{-7}$ at 1\arcsec\ (7.7 au), 1$\times10^{-7}$ at 2\arcsec\ (15 au) and few $\times 10^{-8}$ beyond 5\arcsec\ (38 au), corresponding to masses of $<$ 3, 2 and 0.5 MJup for a system age of 700 Myr. Two F444W objects are identified in the outer MIRI debris disk, around 48 au. One of these is detected by MIRI, appears to be extended and has a spectral energy distribution similar to those of distant extragalactic sources. The second one also appears extended in the NIRCam data suggestive of an extragalactic nature.The NIRCam limits within the inner disk (1\arcsec\ --10\arcsec) correspond to a model-dependent masses of 2$\sim$3 \mj. \citet{Su2024} argue that planets larger even 0.3 MJup would disrupt the smooth disk structure seen at MIRI wavelengths. Eight additional objects are found within 60\arcsec\ of Vega, but none has astrometric properties or colors consistent with planet candidates. These observations reach a level consistent with expected Jeans Mass limits. Deeper observations achieving contrast levels $<10^{-8}$ outside of $\sim$4\arcsec\ and reaching masses below that of Saturn are possible, but may not reveal a large population of new objects., Comment: 19 pages, 12 figures. accepted for Astronomical Journal

Task and motion planning (TAMP) frameworks address long and complex planning problems by integrating high-level task planners with low-level motion planners. However, existing TAMP methods rely heavily on the manual design of planning domains that specify the preconditions and postconditions of all high-level actions. This paper proposes a method to automate planning domain inference from a handful of test-time trajectory demonstrations, reducing the reliance on human design. Our approach incorporates a deep learning-based estimator that predicts the appropriate components of a domain for a new task and a search algorithm that refines this prediction, reducing the size and ensuring the utility of the inferred domain. Our method is able to generate new domains from minimal demonstrations at test time, enabling robots to handle complex tasks more efficiently. We demonstrate that our approach outperforms behavior cloning baselines, which directly imitate planner behavior, in terms of planning performance and generalization across a variety of tasks. Spherical proportional counters (SPCs) are gaseous particle detectors sensitive to single ionization electrons in their target media, with large detector volumes and low background rates. The $\mbox{NEWS-G}$ collaboration employs this technology to search for low-mass dark matter, having previously performed searches with detectors at the Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane (LSM), including a recent campaign with a 135 cm diameter SPC filled with methane. While in situ calibrations of the detector response were carried out at the LSM, measurements of the mean ionization yield and fluctuations of methane gas in SPCs were performed using a 30 cm diameter detector. The results of multiple measurements taken at different operating voltages are presented. A UV laser system was used to measure the mean gas gain of the SPC, along with $\mathrm{^{37}Ar}$ and aluminum-fluorescence calibration sources. This chapter introduces a research project titled "Analyzing the Political Discourse: A Collaboration Between Humans and Artificial Intelligence", which was initiated in preparation for Greece's 2023 general elections. The project focused on the analysis of political leaders' campaign speeches, employing Artificial Intelligence (AI), in conjunction with an interdisciplinary team comprising journalists, a political scientist, and data scientists. The chapter delves into various aspects of political discourse analysis, including sentiment analysis, polarization, populism, topic detection, and Named Entities Recognition (NER). This experimental study investigates the capabilities of large language model (LLMs), and in particular OpenAI's ChatGPT, for analyzing political speech, evaluates its strengths and weaknesses, and highlights the essential role of human oversight in using AI in journalism projects and potentially other societal sectors. The project stands as an innovative example of human-AI collaboration (known also as "hybrid intelligence") within the realm of digital humanities, offering valuable insights for future initiatives.

We introduce a planner designed to guide robot manipulators in stably placing objects within intricate scenes. Our proposed method reverses the traditional approach to object placement: our planner selects contact points first and then determines a placement pose that solicits the selected points. This is instead of sampling poses, identifying contact points, and evaluating pose quality. Our algorithm facilitates stability-aware object placement planning, imposing no restrictions on object shape, convexity, or mass density homogeneity, while avoiding combinatorial computational complexity. Our proposed stability heuristic enables our planner to find a solution about 20 times faster when compared to the same algorithm not making use of the heuristic and eight times faster than a state-of-the-art method that uses the traditional sample-and-evaluate approach. Our proposed planner is also more successful in finding stable placements than the five other benchmarked algorithms. Efficiently retrieving and synthesizing information from large-scale multimodal collections has become a critical challenge. However, existing video retrieval datasets suffer from scope limitations, primarily focusing on matching descriptive but vague queries with small collections of professionally edited, English-centric videos. To address this gap, we introduce $\textbf{MultiVENT 2.0}$, a large-scale, multilingual event-centric video retrieval benchmark featuring a collection of more than 218,000 news videos and 3,906 queries targeting specific world events. These queries specifically target information found in the visual content, audio, embedded text, and text metadata of the videos, requiring systems leverage all these sources to succeed at the task. Preliminary results show that state-of-the-art vision-language models struggle significantly with this task, and while alternative approaches show promise, they are still insufficient to adequately address this problem. These findings underscore the need for more robust multimodal retrieval systems, as effective video retrieval is a crucial step towards multimodal content understanding and generation tasks.

Despite the importance of developing generative AI models that can effectively resist scams, current literature lacks a structured framework for evaluating their vulnerability to such threats. In this work, we address this gap by constructing a benchmark based on the FINRA taxonomy and systematically assessing Large Language Models' (LLMs') vulnerability to a variety of scam tactics. First, we incorporate 37 well-defined base scam scenarios reflecting the diverse scam categories identified by FINRA taxonomy, providing a focused evaluation of LLMs' scam detection capabilities. Second, we utilize representative proprietary (GPT-3.5, GPT-4) and open-source (Llama) models to analyze their performance in scam detection. Third, our research provides critical insights into which scam tactics are most effective against LLMs and how varying persona traits and persuasive techniques influence these vulnerabilities. We reveal distinct susceptibility patterns across different models and scenarios, underscoring the need for targeted enhancements in LLM design and deployment.

We introduce GENomic Encoding REpresentation with Language Model (GENEREL), a framework designed to bridge genetic and biomedical knowledge bases. What sets GENEREL apart is its ability to fine-tune language models to infuse biological knowledge behind clinical concepts such as diseases and medications. This fine-tuning enables the model to capture complex biomedical relationships more effectively, enriching the understanding of how genomic data connects to clinical outcomes. By constructing a unified embedding space for biomedical concepts and a wide range of common SNPs from sources such as patient-level data, biomedical knowledge graphs, and GWAS summaries, GENEREL aligns the embeddings of SNPs and clinical concepts through multi-task contrastive learning. This allows the model to adapt to diverse natural language representations of biomedical concepts while bypassing the limitations of traditional code mapping systems across different data sources. Our experiments demonstrate GENEREL's ability to effectively capture the nuanced relationships between SNPs and clinical concepts. GENEREL also emerges to discern the degree of relatedness, potentially allowing for a more refined identification of concepts. One of the most challenging problems in the computational study of localization in quantum manybody systems is to capture the effects of rare events, which requires sampling over exponentially many disorder realizations. We implement an efficient procedure on a quantum processor, leveraging quantum parallelism, to efficiently sample over all disorder realizations. We observe localization without disorder in quantum many-body dynamics in one and two dimensions: perturbations do not diffuse even though both the generator of evolution and the initial states are fully translationally invariant. The disorder strength as well as its density can be readily tuned using the initial state. Furthermore, we demonstrate the versatility of our platform by measuring Renyi entropies. Our method could also be extended to higher moments of the physical observables and disorder learning.

Search engine results often misalign with users' goals due to opaque algorithms, leading to unhelpful or detrimental information consumption. To address this, we developed a Google Chrome plugin that provides "content labels" for webpages in Google search results, assessing Actionability (guiding actions), Knowledge (enhancing understanding), and Emotion. Using natural language processing and machine learning, the plugin predicts these properties from webpage text based on models trained on participants' ratings, effectively reflecting user perceptions. The implications include enhanced user control over information consumption and promotion of healthier engagement with online content, potentially improving decision-making and well-being.

Electrolytes mediate interactions between the cathode and anode and determine performance characteristics of batteries. Mixtures of multiple solvents are often used in electrolytes to achieve desired properties, such as viscosity, dielectric constant, boiling point, and melting point. Conventionally, multi-component electrolyte properties are approximated with linear mixing, but in practice, significant deviations are observed. Excess quantities can provide insights into the molecular behavior of the mixture and could form the basis for designing high-performance electrolytes. Here we investigate the excess density of commonly used Li-ion battery solvents such as cyclic carbonates, linear carbonates, ethers, and nitriles with molecular dynamics simulations. We additionally investigate electrolytes consisting of these solvents and a salt. The results smoothly vary with mole percent and are fit to permutation-invariant Redlich-Kister polynomials. Mixtures of similar solvents, such as cyclic-cyclic carbonate mixtures, tend to have excess properties that are lower in magnitude compared to mixtures of dissimilar substances, such as carbonate-nitrile mixtures. We perform experimental testing using our robotic test stand, Clio, to provide validation to the observed simulation trends. We quantify the structure similarity using SOAP fingerprints to create a descriptor for excess density, enabling the design of electrolyte properties. To a first approximation, this will allow us to estimate the deviation of a mixture from ideal behavior based solely upon the structural dissimilarity of the components.

This research was a qualitative transcendental phenomenological exploration of astronomy identity formation among astronomy majors and physics majors engaged in astronomy research. Participants (N=10), all of whom identified with traditionally marginalized groups in astronomy, were recruited from two large universities in New York State at different stages in their undergraduate careers. Social cognitive career theory and the physics identity framework conceptually guided the analysis of astronomy identity for undergraduate majors and undergraduate astronomy researchers by exploring participants interest in, choice to study, and persistence in astronomy. Themes related to astronomy interest were popular culture and directly observing astronomical phenomena, while astronomy choice and persistence were facilitated by experiences in introductory coursework, recognition from faculty, and socializing with peers. The emergent astronomy identity framework was characterized by six distinct yet interrelated constructs: 1) interest, typically rooted in observing naturally occurring phenomena and engaging with popular culture; 2) recognition from peers, experts, and families; 3) peer socialization; 4) competence; 5) sense of belonging; and 6) astronomy career expectations. Implications from this research provide insights on factors that influence undergraduates in four-year colleges to study astronomy, and how students' past experiences lead to a natural interest in astronomy that may be fostered in secondary and post-secondary contexts. Findings suggest departments and institutions may facilitate the accessibility of astronomy at the collegiate level by promoting a more inclusive astronomy community, fostering interactions with astronomy faculty and graduate students, providing opportunities for undergraduate research, and communicating expectancy for astronomy-related future careers.

The geotechnical evaluation of seabed sediments is important for engineering projects and naval applications, offering valuable insights into sediment properties, behavior, and strength. Obtaining high-quality seabed samples can be a challenging task, making in-situ testing an essential part of site characterization. Free Fall Penetrometers (FFP) have emerged as robust tools for rapidly profiling seabed surface sediments, even in energetic nearshore or estuarine conditions and shallow as well as deep depths. While methods for interpretation of traditional offshore Cone Penetration Testing (CPT) data are well-established, their adaptation to FFP data is still an area of research. In this study, we introduce an innovative approach that utilizes machine learning algorithms to create a sediment behavior classification system based on portable free fall penetrometer (PFFP) data. The proposed model leverages PFFP measurements obtained from locations such as Sequim Bay (Washington), the Potomac River, and the York River (Virginia). The result shows 91.1\% accuracy in the class prediction, with the classes representing cohesionless sediment with little to no plasticity, cohesionless sediment with some plasticity, cohesive sediment with low plasticity, and cohesive sediment with high plasticity. The model prediction not only provides the predicted class but also yields an estimate of inherent uncertainty associated with the prediction, which can provide valuable insight about different sediment behaviors. These uncertainties typically range from very low to very high, with lower uncertainties being more common, but they can increase significantly dpending on variations in sediment composition, environmental conditions, and operational techniques. By quantifying uncertainty, the model offers a more comprehensive and informed approach to sediment classification.

We use first-principles scattering calculations based upon wave-function matching and implemented with a tight-binding MTO basis to evaluate the orbital Hall conductivity $\sigma_{\rm oH}$ for Ti, V, Cr, Cu and Pt metals with temperature-induced lattice disorder. Only interatomic fluxes of orbital angular momentum are included in these estimates; intraatomic fluxes which do not contribute to the transfer of angular momentum are explicitly excluded. The resistivity and orbital Hall angle are both found to be linear in temperature so $\sigma_{\rm oH}$ is at most weakly temperature dependent. The value of $\sigma_{\rm oH}$ we obtain for bulk Cr is $ \approx 2 \times 10^3 (\hbar/e) \, (\Omega \, {\rm cm})^{-1}$ which is substantially lower than previously obtained theoretical results but agrees well with experiment. In units of $10^3 (\hbar/e) (\Omega \, {\rm cm})^{-1}$, the values obtained for Ti, V and Pt are $5$, $6$ and $7$, respectively.

NASA's forthcoming Lunar Gateway space station, which will be uncrewed most of the time, will need to operate with an unprecedented level of autonomy. Enhancing autonomy on the Gateway presents several unique challenges, one of which is to equip the Canadarm3, the Gateway's external robotic system, with the capability to perform worksite monitoring. Monitoring will involve using the arm's inspection cameras to detect any anomalies within the operating environment, a task complicated by the widely-varying lighting conditions in space. In this paper, we introduce the visual anomaly detection and localization task for space applications and establish a benchmark with our novel synthetic dataset called ALLO (for Anomaly Localization in Lunar Orbit). We develop a complete data generation pipeline to create ALLO, which we use to evaluate the performance of state-of-the-art visual anomaly detection algorithms. Computational models are invaluable in capturing the complexities of real-world biological processes. Yet, the selection of appropriate algorithms for inference tasks, especially when dealing with real-world observational data, remains a challenging and underexplored area. This gap has spurred the development of various parameter estimation algorithms, particularly within the realm of Simulation-Based Inference (SBI), such as neural and statistical SBI methods. Limited research exists on how to make informed choices on SBI methods when faced with real-world data, which often results in some form of model misspecification. In this paper, we provide comprehensive guidelines for deciding between SBI approaches for complex biological models. We apply the guidelines to two agent-based models that describe cellular dynamics using real-world data. Our study unveils a critical insight: while neural SBI methods demand significantly fewer simulations for inference results, they tend to yield biased estimations, a trend persistent even with robust variants of these algorithms. On the other hand, the accuracy of statistical SBI methods enhances substantially as the number of simulations increases. This finding suggests that, given a sufficient computational budget, statistical SBI can surpass neural SBI in performance. Our results not only shed light on the efficacy of different SBI methodologies in real-world scenarios but also suggest potential avenues for enhancing neural SBI approaches. This study is poised to be a useful resource for computational biologists navigating the intricate landscape of SBI in biological modeling.

Long-distance driving is an important component of planetary surface exploration. Unforeseen events often require human operators to adjust mobility plans, but this approach does not scale and will be insufficient for future missions. Interest in self-reliant rovers is increasing, however the research community has not yet given significant attention to autonomous, adaptive decision-making. In this paper, we look back at specific planetary mobility operations where human-guided adaptive planning played an important role in mission safety and productivity. Inspired by the abilities of human experts, we identify shortcomings of existing autonomous mobility algorithms for robots operating in off-road environments like planetary surfaces. We advocate for adaptive decision-making capabilities such as unassisted learning from past experiences and more reliance on stochastic world models. This paper introduces the hypothetical track-length fitting algorithm, a novel method for measuring the kinetic energies of ionizing particles in liquid argon time projection chambers (LArTPCs). The algorithm finds the most probable offset in track length for a track-like object by comparing the measured ionization density as a function of position with a theoretical prediction of the energy loss as a function of the energy, including models of electron recombination and detector response. The algorithm can be used to measure the energies of particles that interact before they stop, such as charged pions that are absorbed by argon nuclei. The algorithm's energy measurement resolutions and fractional biases are presented as functions of particle kinetic energy and number of track hits using samples of stopping secondary charged pions in data collected by the ProtoDUNE-SP detector, and also in a detailed simulation. Additional studies describe impact of the dE/dx model on energy measurement performance. The method described in this paper to characterize the energy measurement performance can be repeated in any LArTPC experiment using stopping secondary charged pions.

Much of Earth's charismatic megafauna is endangered by human activities, particularly the rhino, which is at risk of extinction due to the poaching crisis in Africa. Monitoring rhinos' movement is crucial to their protection but has unfortunately proven difficult because rhinos are elusive. Therefore, instead of tracking rhinos, we propose the novel approach of mapping communal defecation sites, called middens, which give information about rhinos' spatial behavior valuable to anti-poaching, management, and reintroduction efforts. This paper provides the first-ever mapping of rhino midden locations by building classifiers to detect them using remotely sensed thermal, RGB, and LiDAR imagery in passive and active learning settings. As existing active learning methods perform poorly due to the extreme class imbalance in our dataset, we design MultimodAL, an active learning system employing a ranking technique and multimodality to achieve competitive performance with passive learning models with 94% fewer labels. Our methods could therefore save over 76 hours in labeling time when used on a similarly-sized dataset. Unexpectedly, our midden map reveals that rhino middens are not randomly distributed throughout the landscape; rather, they are clustered. We present the first demonstration of a 1550 nm multi-wavelength distributed feedback (MW-DFB) laser employing a third-order, four-phase-shifted sampled sidewall grating. By utilizing linearly chirped sampled gratings and incorporating multiple true {\pi}-phase shifts within the cavity, we achieved and experimentally validated a four-wavelength laser with a channel spacing of 0.4 nm. The device operates stably and uniformly across a wide range of injection currents from 280 mA to 350 mA. The average wavelength spacing was measured at 0.401 nm with a standard deviation of 0.0081 nm. Additionally, we demonstrated a 0.3 nm MW-DFB laser with a seven-channel output, achieving a wavelength spacing of 0.274 nm and a standard deviation of 0.0055 nm. This MW-DFB laser features a ridge waveguide with sidewall gratings, requiring only one metalorganic vapor-phase epitaxy (MOVPE) step and a single III-V material etching process. This streamlined fabrication approach simplifies device manufacturing and is well-suited for dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) systems.

Lattice gauge theories (LGTs) can be employed to understand a wide range of phenomena, from elementary particle scattering in high-energy physics to effective descriptions of many-body interactions in materials. Studying dynamical properties of emergent phases can be challenging as it requires solving many-body problems that are generally beyond perturbative limits. We investigate the dynamics of local excitations in a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ LGT using a two-dimensional lattice of superconducting qubits. We first construct a simple variational circuit which prepares low-energy states that have a large overlap with the ground state; then we create particles with local gates and simulate their quantum dynamics via a discretized time evolution. As the effective magnetic field is increased, our measurements show signatures of transitioning from deconfined to confined dynamics. For confined excitations, the magnetic field induces a tension in the string connecting them. Our method allows us to experimentally image string dynamics in a (2+1)D LGT from which we uncover two distinct regimes inside the confining phase: for weak confinement the string fluctuates strongly in the transverse direction, while for strong confinement transverse fluctuations are effectively frozen. In addition, we demonstrate a resonance condition at which dynamical string breaking is facilitated. Our LGT implementation on a quantum processor presents a novel set of techniques for investigating emergent particle and string dynamics.

Ultrasound curve angle (UCA) measurement provides a radiation-free and reliable evaluation for scoliosis based on ultrasound imaging. However, degraded image quality, especially in difficult-to-image patients, can prevent clinical experts from making confident measurements, even leading to misdiagnosis. In this paper, we propose a multi-stage image enhancement framework that models high-quality image distribution via a diffusion-based model. Specifically, we integrate the underlying morphological information from images taken at different depths of the 3D volume to calibrate the reverse process toward high-quality and high-fidelity image generation. This is achieved through a fusion operation with a learnable tuner module that learns the multi-to-one mapping from multi-depth to high-quality images. Moreover, the separate learning of the high-quality image distribution and the spinal features guarantees the preservation of consistent spinal pose descriptions in the generated images, which is crucial in evaluating spinal deformities. Remarkably, our proposed enhancement algorithm significantly outperforms other enhancement-based methods on ultrasound images in terms of image quality. Ultimately, we conduct the intra-rater and inter-rater measurements of UCA and higher ICC (0.91 and 0.89 for thoracic and lumbar angles) on enhanced images, indicating our method facilitates the measurement of ultrasound curve angles and offers promising prospects for automated scoliosis diagnosis.

Let $F$ be a field of characteristic $p>0$. We prove that if a symbol $A=\omega \otimes \beta_1 \otimes \dots \otimes \beta_n$ in $H_{p^m}^{n+1}(F)$ is of exponent dividing $p^{m-1}$, then its symbol length in $H_{p^{m-1}}^{n+1}(F)$ is at most $p^n$. In the case $n=2$ we also prove that if $A= \omega_1\otimes \beta_1+\cdots+\omega_r\otimes \beta_r$ in $H_{p^{m}}^2(F)$ satisfies $\exp(A)|p^{m-1}$, then the symbol length of $A$ in $H_{p^{m-1}}^2(F)$ is at most $p^r+r-1$. We conclude by looking at the case $p=2$ and proving that if $A$ is a sum of two symbols in $H_{2^m}^{n+1}(F)$ and $\exp A |2^{m-1}$, then the symbol length of $A$ in $H_{2^{m-1}}^{n+1}(F)$ is at most $(2n+1)2^n$. Our results use norm conditions in characteristic $p$ in the same manner as Matrzi in his paper ``On the symbol length of symbols''.

While deep learning has catalyzed breakthroughs across numerous domains, its broader adoption in clinical settings is inhibited by the costly and time-intensive nature of data acquisition and annotation. To further facilitate medical machine learning, we present an ultrasound dataset of 10,223 Brightness-mode (B-mode) images consisting of sagittal slices of porcine spinal cords (N=25) before and after a contusion injury. We additionally benchmark the performance metrics of several state-of-the-art object detection algorithms to localize the site of injury and semantic segmentation models to label the anatomy for comparison and creation of task-specific architectures. Finally, we evaluate the zero-shot generalization capabilities of the segmentation models on human ultrasound spinal cord images to determine whether training on our porcine dataset is sufficient for accurately interpreting human data. Our results show that the YOLOv8 detection model outperforms all evaluated models for injury localization, achieving a mean Average Precision (mAP50-95) score of 0.606. Segmentation metrics indicate that the DeepLabv3 segmentation model achieves the highest accuracy on unseen porcine anatomy, with a Mean Dice score of 0.587, while SAMed achieves the highest Mean Dice score generalizing to human anatomy (0.445). To the best of our knowledge, this is the largest annotated dataset of spinal cord ultrasound images made publicly available to researchers and medical professionals, as well as the first public report of object detection and segmentation architectures to assess anatomical markers in the spinal cord for methodology development and clinical applications.

Inference-time techniques are emerging as highly effective tools to enhance large language model (LLM) capabilities. However, best practices for developing systems that combine these techniques remain underdeveloped due to our limited understanding of the utility of individual inference-time techniques and the interactions between them. Additionally, efficiently and automatically searching the space of model choices, inference-time techniques, and their compositions is challenging due to the large design space. To address these challenges, we introduce Archon, a modular framework for selecting, combining, and stacking layers of inference-time techniques to construct optimized LLM systems for target benchmarks. Rather than relying on a single LLM called once, we leverage a diverse set of LLMs and inference-time techniques, creating LLM systems greater than the sum of their parts. Archon defines an extensible design space, encompassing techniques such as generation ensembling, repeated sampling, ranking, fusion, critiquing, verification, and unit testing. It transforms the problem of building LLM systems into a hyperparameter optimization objective. Given the available LLMs, inference-time techniques, and compute budget, Archon utilizes hyperparameter search techniques to discover optimized architectures for target benchmark(s). We evaluate Archon architectures across a range of instruction-following, reasoning, and coding benchmarks, including MT-Bench, Arena-Hard-Auto, AlpacaEval 2.0, MixEval, MixEval Hard, MATH, and CodeContests. Archon architectures outperform frontier models, such as GPT-4o and Claude 3.5 Sonnet, on these benchmarks, achieving an average accuracy increase of 15.1 percentage points by using all available LLMs. We make our code and datasets available publicly on Github: https://github.com/ScalingIntelligence/Archon.

We introduce a pro-cdh topology on formal schemes and prove that the $\infty$-topos of pro-cdh sheaves of spaces has an optimal bound of homotopy dimension. This remedies a defect for a pro-cdh topology on schemes introduced in [KS23]. As an application, we give a topos-theoretic interpretation of Weibel's vanishing of negative K-theory and motivic cohomology of Elmanto and Morrow.

The special Galilean group, usually denoted SGal(3), is a 10-dimensional Lie group whose important subgroups include the special orthogonal group, the special Euclidean group, and the group of extended poses. We briefly describe SGal(3) and its Lie algebra and show how the group structure supports a unified representation of uncertainty in space and time. A multitude of JWST studies reveal a surprising over-abundance of over-massive accreting super-massive blackholes (SMBHs) -- leading to a deepening tension between theory and observation in the first billion years of cosmic time. Across X-ray to infrared wavelengths, models built off of pre-JWST predictions fail to easily reproduce observed AGN signatures (or lack thereof), driving uncertainty around the true nature of these sources. Using a sample of JWST AGN identified via their broadened Halpha emission and covered by the deepest X-ray surveys, we find neither any measurable X-ray emission nor any detection of high-ionization emission lines frequently associated with accreting SMBHs. We propose that these sources are accreting at or beyond the Eddington limit, which reduces the need for efficient production of heavy SMBH seeds at cosmic dawn. Using a theoretical model of super-Eddington accretion, we can produce the observed relative dearth of both X-ray and ultraviolet emission, as well as the high Balmer decrements, without the need for significant dust attenuation. This work indicates that super-Eddington accretion is easily achieved through-out the early Universe, and further study is required to determine what environments are required to trigger this mode of black hole growth., Comment: Submitted
