The impact of microplastics (MPs) on the metabolic functions of the liver is currently unclear and not completely understood. To investigate the effects of the administration of MPs on the hepatic metabolism of normal and obese mice, alterations in the lipid, glucose (Glu), and amino acid regulation pathways were analyzed in the liver and adipose tissues of C57BL/6Korl (wild type, WT) or C57BL/6-Lepem1hwl/Korl mice (leptin knockout, Lep KO) orally administered polystyrene (PS) MPs for 9 weeks. Significant alterations in the lipid accumulation, adipogenesis, lipogenesis, and lipolysis pathways were detected in the liver tissue of MP-treated WT and Lep KO mice compared to the vehicle-treated group. These alterations in their liver tissues were accompanied by an upregulation of the serum lipid profile, as well as alterations in the adipogenesis, lipogenesis, and lipolysis pathways in the adipose tissues of MP-treated WT and Lep KO mice. Specifically, the level of leptin was increased in the adipose tissues of MP-treated WT mice without any change in their food intake. Also, MP-induced disruptions in the glycogenolysis, Glu transporter type 4 (GLUT4)-5′ AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) signaling pathway, levels of lipid intermediates, and the insulin resistance of the liver tissues of WT and Lep KO mice were observed. Furthermore, the levels of seven endogenous metabolites were remarkably changed in the serum of WT and Lep KO mice after MP administrations. Finally, the impact of the MP administration observed in both types of mice was further verified in differentiated 3T3-L1 adipocytes and HepG2 cells. Thus, these results suggest that the oral administration of MPs for 9 weeks may be associated with the disruption of lipid, Glu, and amino acid metabolism in the liver tissue of obese WT and Lep KO mice. SUMMARY: Arabidopsis thaliana WRKY proteins are potential targets of pathogen‐secreted effectors. RESISTANT TO RALSTONIA SOLANACEARUM 1 (RRS1; AtWRKY52) is a well‐studied Arabidopsis nucleotide‐binding and leucine‐rich repeat (NLR) immune receptor carrying a C‐terminal WRKY domain that functions as an integrated decoy. RRS1‐R recognizes the effectors AvrRps4 from Pseudomonas syringae pv. pisi and PopP2 from Ralstonia pseudosolanacearum by direct interaction through its WRKY domain. AvrRps4 and PopP2 were previously shown to interact with several AtWRKYs. However, how these effectors selectively interact with their virulence targets remains unknown. Here, we show that several members of subgroup IIIb of the AtWRKY family are targeted by AvrRps4 and PopP2. We demonstrate that several AtWRKYs induce cell death when transiently expressed in Nicotiana benthamiana, indicating the activation of immune responses. AtWRKY54 was the only cell death‐inducing AtWRKY that interacted with both AvrRps4 and PopP2. We found that AvrRps4 and PopP2 specifically suppress AtWRKY54‐induced cell death. We also demonstrate that the amino acid residues required for the avirulence function of AvrRps4 and PopP2 are critical for suppressing AtWRKY54‐induced cell death. AtWRKY54 residues predicted to form a binding interface with AvrRps4 were predominantly located in the DNA binding domain and necessary for inducing cell death. Notably, one AtWRKY54 residue, E164, contributes to affinity with AvrRps4 and is exclusively present among subgroup IIIb AtWRKYs, yet is located outside of the DNA‐binding domain. Surprisingly, AtWRKY54 mutated at E164 evaded AvrRps4‐mediated cell death suppression. Taking our observations together, we propose that AvrRp4 and PopP2 specifically target AtWRKY54 to suppress plant immune responses. Background: General anesthesia is often necessary for dental treatment of outpatients with mental disabilities. Rapid recovery and effective management of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) are critical for outpatients. This study aimed to investigate the effect of transitioning from propofol to remimazolam with flumazenil reversal administered toward the end of surgery during propofol-based total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA) on recovery. Methods: Adults with mental disabilities scheduled to undergo dental treatment were randomly assigned to receive either propofol-based TIVA (Group P) or propofol-remimazolam-based TIVA with flumazenil reversal (Group PR). Propofol was replaced with remimazolam 1 h before the end of surgery in Group PR; moreover, 0.5 mg of flumazenil was administered after the neuromuscular blockade reversal agent. The primary outcome was the duration of stay in the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU). The secondary outcomes included time to eye-opening, time to extubation, occurrence of PONV, and quality of recovery. Results: Fifty-four patients were included in this study. The duration of stay in the PACU in Group PR was significantly shorter than that in Group P (mean difference, 8.7 min; confidence interval [95% CI], 3.3–14.2; P = 0.002). Group PR exhibited a shorter time to eye opening (mean difference, 5.4 min; 95% CI, 3.3–8.1; P < 0.001) and time to extubation (mean difference, 5.5 min; 95% CI, 3.6–7.9; P < 0.001) than Group P. Neither group required the administration of rescue analgesics, and the incidence of PONV was not reported. Conclusions: Transitioning from propofol to remimazolam 1 h before the end of surgery followed by flumazenil reversal reduced the duration of stay in the PACU and the time to eye opening and extubation without affecting the incidence of PONV and quality of recovery. Green gentrification posits that urban greening initiatives (e.g., large new parks) can fuel gentrification. To help cities avoid this greening dilemma, this study examines the conditions under which urban greening did or did not promote neighborhood gentrification in Chicago from 2010 to 2020. Using Qualitative Comparative Analysis, we find that a large new park alone did not cause gentrification, but it did when located within areas experiencing gentrification spillover effects and lacking both preexisting green space and government-assisted public housing. Conversely, a large new park in areas that already have adequate green space amounts per resident did not spur gentrification, even if the area has a lower level of government-subsidized public housing. Our findings underscore the role of the preexisting green space infrastructure and the need for a nuanced understanding of the local context when planning and implementing urban greening projects to ensure just outcomes for all residents. While teachers value cultural and linguistic diversity, they see the benefits of speaking different languages in the future tense, feeling it hard to specify how language differences positively impact students' learning in the present. This study explores teachers' temporal perceptions of language differences, specifically focusing on how teacher perceptions of language differences as "future assets" are intertwined with native speakerism in the present. It draws on multi-year interviews that unveil how teachers prioritise monolingualism as the norm of classroom discourse and juxtaposes teachers' accounts with an immigrant child's navigation of cultural-linguistic assets to speak Korean and English in non-school contexts. Through this, we argue that, whereas teachers see the potential benefits of speaking different languages that seek to pluralise the educational futures, they continue to hold the normative view on language differences by not being offered the epistemic tools to question whose future and whose language are imagined as the desired endpoints of language education. Approaching teachers' statements as the outcome of the limited epistemic principles of normative futurity, this study calls for disrupting the continuity of native speakerism to support culturally and linguistically diverse students through the non-linear, reparative, and multiple relations to the futures in language education. To assess the prevalence and abundance of antibiotic resistance genes in human and livestock gut microbiomes, 87 humans (healthy individuals and patients with Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI)) and 108 livestock (swine, cattle, and chickens) were enrolled. Gut microbiomes and fluoroquinolone-resistant Escherichia coli isolates were sequenced, and mobile genetic elements adjacent to the β-lactamase (bla) and transferable quinolone resistance (qnr) genes were compared using metagenomic contigs. Each group of humans and livestock exhibited distinctive microbiota and resistome compositions in the gut. Concerning the resistome of bla and qnr, the prevalence rates between chickens and patients with CDI were the most similar (R2 = 0.46); blaTEM, blaOXA, blaCTX-M, and qnrS were highly prevalent in both groups. According to genomic and phylogenetic analyses, blaCTX-M and blaOXA expressed lineage specificity to either humans or livestock, while qnrS and blaTEM displayed a shared lineage between humans and livestock. A qnrS1 mobilome comprising five genes, including two recombinases, a transposase, and a plasmid gene, is commonly found in human and chicken gut microbiomes. Humans and chickens showed the most similar gut resistomes to β-lactams and quinolones. QnrS and blaTEM displayed especially strong co-occurrence between the guts of humans and livestock. Fluvial particulate organic carbon (POC) is a complex mixture that undergoes rapid and complicated shifts in source during storm events. High-temporal resolution sampling and source-sensitive chemical analyses, such as those for organic geochemical biomarkers, are necessary to investigate the dynamic POC source behaviour during storm events. However, experimental designs that accommodate those requirements inevitably yield large datasets that require a new data analysis approach. Here, we adapt one of the widely used data visualization techniques, heatmaps with clustering analysis, to seek patterns in source mobilization and transition and pinpoint their timing during storm events more effectively and intuitively. Biomarker concentration data are scaled and used to construct a biomarker heatmap using the ComplexHeatmap package in R. Hierarchical clustering is performed to reorder the biomarkers based on (dis)similarities in their concentration fluctuations during storm events. We implemented our approach to visualize our high-frequency biomarker data obtained from storm POC samples collected in the well-characterized field site of Clear Creek, Iowa. The results demonstrated clear sequential source changes from algal and microbial OC to vascular plants- and soil-rich OC during the event, with an additional source transition identified within the vascular plant biomarkers. The sensitivity analyses results showed that the additional source transition was lost as the temporal resolution of sampling was reduced to 25% of the original data. The sensitivity of the identified clustering to varying scaling methods and number of biomarkers was also examined. Comparison with principal component analysis (PCA) showed that the biomarker heatmap performed better in visualizing temporal changes of individual biomarkers. This biomarker heatmap approach will help scientists to understand the complex storm-induced POC source changes by offering a new perspective to explore the data and generate hypotheses to be tested in follow-up analyses. • Immunization is being delayed due to vaccine hesitancy and negative attitudes toward vaccination. • Vaccine Hesitancy Scale (VHS) and Vaccination Attitude Examination Scale (VAX) are recently developed for accurate measurement. • Korean versions of the VHS and VAX showed good psychometric properties in adults. Strategies for reducing vaccine hesitancy and negative attitudes toward vaccination and measures to accurately assess them have been developed worldwide. The Vaccine Hesitancy Scale (VHS) and Vaccination Attitudes Examination Scale (VAX) are reliable and valid tools. This study evaluates the validity and reliability of the Korean versions of the Vaccine Hesitancy Scale (K-VHS) and Vaccination Attitudes Examination Scale (K-VAX). We translated the VHS and VAX into Korean using forward and backward translations and tested their psychometric attributes. We collected data from a sample of 2,292 Koreans, recruited in June 2021 from a large online panel using quotas for age and gender. We used content validity, construct validity with confirmatory factor analysis, concurrent validity, and convergent validity to assess the validity of the scales, and tested their reliability with evaluations of internal consistency and stability. The K-VHS and K-VAX showed good model fits in the validity tests, with seven items for one factor and 12 items for four factors, respectively. The internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = 0.94 for the K-VHS, and 0.86 for the K-VAX) and stability (ICC = 0.86 for the K-VHS, and 0.88 for the K-VAX) of the measures indicated that they are reliable. Both tools are effective psychometric instruments for assessing vaccine hesitancy and vaccination attitudes in Korean adults. K-VHS and K-VAX would be useful for predicting vaccination behaviors in novel infectious disease contexts and communicating the evidence needed to develop related policies or programs. Bioaerosol contamination problems have led to the need for new technologies that effectively collect and inactivate airborne microorganisms. Typical nanomaterial‐based filter membranes are usually sterilized using photocatalysts, electrical stimulation, and thermal treatment, which are expensive and require additional devices and cumbersome manufacturing. In this study, a membrane with nanotopographical features is manufactured via a catalyst droplet‐based procedure to mechanically damage airborne bacteria. The catalyst droplets are used as templates for in situ novel puncturable nanopillar growth on the membrane surface. Numerical simulations and microscopic observations show that puncturable nanopillars with a thin and rough nano‐edge are advantageous for rupturing the bacterial cell compared to flat nanopillars without a thin edge. A puncturable nanostructured air filter (PNAF) is compared to a bare air filter and exhibits higher bioaerosol collection efficiencies (>98% and 89.3–95.7%, respectively). PNAF is tested under breathing conditions as part of a face mask, where it effectively captures and deactivates E. coli aerosols through a mechano‐bactericidal effect, resulting in the inhibition of bacterial proliferation and finally death. Low‐cost Fe can be used for forming cation‐disordered rocksalt Li‐excess (DRX) materials instead of high‐cost d0‐species and then the Fe‐based DRX can be promising electrode materials because they can theoretically achieve high capacity, resulting from additional oxygen redox reaction and stable cation‐disordered structure. However, Fe‐based DRX materials suffer from large voltage hysteresis, low electrochemical activity, and poor cyclability, so it is highly challenging to utilize them as practical electrode materials for a cell. Here, novel high‐capacity Li‐Fe‐Ti‐Mo electrode materials (LFTMO) with high average discharge voltage and reasonable stability are reported. The effect of Ti/Mo on electrochemical reactions in Fe‐based DRX materials (LFTMO) is studied by controlling its composition ratio and using techniques for analyzing the local environment to find the key factors that improve its activity. It is found out that the introduction of appropriate quantity of redox‐active Mo4+/5+ to Fe‐based DRX materials can help stabilize the oxygen redox reaction via changing a local structure and can suppress a Fe redox reaction, which can cause poor performance. Liver fibrosis is the most common feature of liver disease, and activated hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) are the main contributors to liver fibrosis. Thus, finding key targets that modulate HSC activation is important to prevent liver fibrosis. Previously, we showed that thymosin β4 (Tβ4) influenced HSC activation by interacting with the Hedgehog pathway in vitro. Herein, we generated Tβ4 conditional knockout (Tβ4-flox) mice to investigate in vivo functions of Tβ4 in liver fibrosis. To selectively delete Tβ4 in activated HSCs, double-transgenic (DTG) mice were generated by mating Tβ4-flox mice with α-smooth muscle actin (α-Sma)-Cre-ERT2 mice, and these mice were administered carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) or underwent bile duct ligation to induce liver fibrosis. Tβ4 was selectively suppressed in the activated HSCs of DTG mouse liver, and this reduction attenuated liver injury, including fibrosis, in both fibrotic models by repressing Hedgehog (Hh) signaling. In addition, the re-expression of Tβ4 by an adeno-associated virus reversed the effect of HSC-specific Tβ4 deletion and led to liver fibrosis with Hh activation in CCl4-exposed mice treated with tamoxifen. In conclusion, our results demonstrate that Tβ4 is a crucial regulator of HSC activation, suggesting it as a novel therapeutic target for curing liver fibrosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The local compositional heterogeneity associated with the lack of long-range ordering of Mg2+ and Nb5+ in PbMg1/3Nb2/3O3 (PMN) is correlated with its characteristic "relaxor" ferroelectric behavior. Earlier work [Shetty et al., Adv. Funct. Mater. 29, 1804258 (2019)] examined the relaxor behavior in PMN thin films grown at temperatures below 1073 K by artificially reducing the degree of disorder via synthesis of heterostructures with alternate layers of Pb(Mg2/3Nb1/3)O3 and PbNbO3, as suggested by the "random-site model." This work confirmed the development of ferroelectric domains below 150 K in long-range-ordered films, epitaxially grown on (111) SrTiO3 substrates using alternate target timed pulsed-laser deposition of Pb(Mg2/3Nb1/3)O3 and PbNbO3 targets with 20% excess Pb. In this work, the first through third-harmonic dielectric charge displacement densities and complex dielectric susceptibilities were analyzed as a function of temperature and frequency in zero-field-cooled PMN films with short- and long-range ordering. The long-range ordering decreased the dispersion in the first- and third-harmonic dielectric charge displacement densities relative to short-range-ordered films. It was found that the one-dimensional ordering achieved in the long-range-ordered film is insufficient to achieve a fully normal ferroelectric state. In the presence of quenched random electric fields, these films require a small ac field to facilitate percolation of the polar nano-regions, enabling normal ferroelectric-like behavior at lower temperature (T < 240 K). The films behave like a typical relaxor near room temperature. We developed an extracellular vesicle (EV) bioprocessing platform for the scalable production of human Wharton's jelly mesenchymal stem cell (MSC)-derived EVs. The effects of clinical-scale MSC-EV products on wound healing were tested in two different wound models: subcutaneous injection of EVs in a conventional full-thickness rat model and topical application of EVs using a sterile re-absorbable gelatin sponge in the chamber mouse model that was developed to prevent the contraction of wound areas. In vivo efficacy tests showed that treatment with MSC-EVs improved the recovery following wound injury, regardless of the type of wound model or mode of treatment. In vitro mechanistic studies using multiple cell lines involved in wound healing showed that EV therapy contributed to all stages of wound healing, such as anti-inflammation and proliferation/migration of keratinocytes, fibroblasts, and endothelial cells, to enhance wound re-epithelialization, extracellular matrix remodeling, and angiogenesis. This paper proposes facial expression recognition (FER) with the wild data set. In particular, this paper chiefly deals with two issues, occlusion and intra-similarity problems. The attention mechanism enables one to use the most relevant areas of facial images for specific expressions, and the triplet loss function solves the intra-similarity problem that sometimes fails to aggregate the same expression from different faces and vice versa. The proposed approach for the FER is robust to occlusion, and it uses a spatial transformer network (STN) with an attention mechanism to utilize specific facial region that dominantly contributes (or that is the most relevant) to particular facial expressions, e.g., anger, contempt, disgust, fear, joy, sadness, and surprise. In addition, the STN model is connected to the triplet loss function to improve the recognition rate which outperforms the existing approaches that employ cross-entropy or other approaches using only deep neural networks or classical methods. The triplet loss module alleviates limitations of the intra-similarity problem, leading to further improvement of the classification. Experimental results are provided to substantiate the proposed approach for FER, and the result outperforms the recognition rate in more practical cases, e.g., occlusion. The quantitative result provides FER results with more than 2.09 % higher accuracy compared to the existing FER results in CK+ data sets and 0.48 % higher than the accuracy of the results with the modified ResNet model in the FER2013 data set. Studies of mouse models of Alzheimer's disease (AD) have demonstrated that nitric oxide synthase 2 (NOS2) is involved in AD pathology. However, the effects of NOS2 on the pathology of Parkinson's disease (PD) are not well studied. To address this gap, we examined the impact of NOS2 on disease-associated phenotypes in a mouse model of PD. Transgenic mice carrying the A53T mutation of α-synuclein (SynA53T) and newly generated double transgenic mice with deletion of NOS2 (SynA53T/NOS2−/−) were used. Compared with SynA53T mice, the loss of nos2 decreased α-synuclein phosphorylation at serine 129 and reduced α-synuclein-induced microglial and astrocyte activation in SynA53T/NOS−/− mice. Additionally, neuroinflammation-related gene clusters in the deep mesencephalic nucleus (DpMe) were altered in SynA53T/NOS−/− mice compared with SynA53T mice. The objective of this study is to determine the trend and diversity of binary toxin-positive Clostridioides difficile over 10 years in Korea. Binary toxin-positive strains were selected from a tertiary hospital in Korea in 2009–2018. The multi-locus sequence typing and antibiotic susceptibility test were performed. Among the 3278 isolates in 2009–2018, 58 possessed binary toxin genes (1.7%). The proportion of CDT- positive isolates was 0.51–4.82% in 2009–2018, which increased over the 10-year period (P = 0.023). Thirteen sequence types (STs) were identified; ST5 (14 [24%]), ST11 (11 [19%]), ST221 (10 [17%]), ST201 (7 [12%]) and ST1 (5 [9%]) were popular. All 58 isolates were susceptible to vancomycin and piperacillin/tazobactam, and clindamycin and moxifloxacin were active in 69.0% and 62% of isolates, respectively. ST1 strains were resistant to several antibiotics, including moxifloxacin (80%), clindamycin (60%) and rifaximin (60%). Moreover, four of five ST1 presented a metronidazole minimum inhibitory concentration of 4 µg/mL. Moxifloxacin resistance was highest (72.3%) for ST11. We report a deep learning-based emotion recognition method using EEG data collected while applying cosmetic creams. Four creams with different textures were randomly applied, and they were divided into two classes, "like (positive)" and "dislike (negative)", according to the preference score given by the subject. We extracted frequency features using well-known frequency bands, i.e., alpha, beta and low and high gamma bands, and then we created a matrix including frequency and spatial information of the EEG data. We developed seven CNN-based models: (1) inception-like CNN with four-band merged input, (2) stacked CNN with four-band merged input, (3) stacked CNN with four-band parallel input, and stacked CNN with single-band input of (4) alpha, (5) beta, (6) low gamma, and (7) high gamma. The models were evaluated by the Leave-One-Subject-Out Cross-Validation method. In like/dislike two-class classification, the average accuracies of all subjects were 73.2%, 75.4%, 73.9%, 68.8%, 68.0%, 70.7%, and 69.7%, respectively. We found that the classification performance is higher when using multi-band features than when using single-band feature. Ca2+ signaling is implicated in the transition between microglial surveillance and activation. Several L-type Ca2+ channel blockers (CCBs) have been shown to ameliorate neuroinflammation by modulating microglial activity. In this study, we examined the effects of the L-type CCB felodipine on LPS-mediated proinflammatory responses. We found that felodipine treatment significantly diminished LPS-evoked proinflammatory cytokine levels in BV2 microglial cells in an L-type Ca2+ channel-dependent manner. In addition, felodipine leads to the inhibition of TLR4/AKT/STAT3 signaling in BV2 microglial cells. We further examined the effects of felodipine on LPS-stimulated neuroinflammation in vivo and found that daily administration (3 or 7 days, i.p.) significantly reduced LPS-mediated gliosis and COX-2 and IL-1β levels in C57BL/6 (wild-type) mice. Moreover, felodipine administration significantly reduced chronic neuroinflammation-induced spatial memory impairment, dendritic spine number, and microgliosis in C57BL/6 mice. Nitric oxide (NO) linked to glutamate receptors in the caudate and putamen (CPu) regulates neuroadaptation after drug exposure. Matrix-metalloproteinase (MMP), a Ca2+-dependent zinc-containing endopeptidase, increases mature brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) synthesis after drug exposure in the brain. The present study determined that NO synthesis linked to metabotropic glutamate receptor subtype 5 (mGluR5) stimulation after challenge exposure to nicotine activates MMP, which upregulates BDNF synthesis in the CPu. Subcutaneous injection of challenge nicotine (1.0 mg/kg) after repeated injections of nicotine (1.0 mg/kg/day) for 14 days and 7 days of nicotine withdrawal increased MMP2 activity and BDNF expression in the CPu of rats. These increases were prevented by the bilateral intra-CPu infusion of the mGluR5 antagonist, MPEP (0.1 nmol/side), the IP3 receptor antagonist, xestospongin C (0.004 nmol/side) or the neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) and NO inhibitor, Nω-propyl (0.1 nmol/side) prior to the challenge nicotine. Furthermore, bilateral intra-CPu infusion of the MMP2 inhibitor, OA-Hy (1 nmol/side) prevented the challenge nicotine-induced increase in the expression of BDNF. These findings suggest that elevation of NO synthesis linked to mGluR5 potentiates BDNF synthesis via activation of MMP2 after challenge exposure to nicotine in the CPu of rats. This study aims to unveil how COVID-19 affected the experience of stress by focusing on the stressors. Using computational analysis based on a newly developed stressor identification model, we compared the experience of stress expressed by Korean Twitter users before and during the pandemic in terms of (1) the stressors as the source of stress and (2) emotion as the manifestation of stress. Both tweet-level (N = 202,556) and user-level (N = 24,803) analyses revealed that social factors are prevalent sources of stress both before and during the pandemic. Moreover, social stressors increased the most during the pandemic. While stress from social stressors was manifested mainly as sadness before the pandemic, anger became the predominant emotional manifestation during the pandemic. Public health policies and educators should consider social stressors as the predominant source of stress during the pandemic and seek ways to prepare the public better for such threats. While the literature in the area of self-determination for youth and adolescents is well-developed, research on the acquisition of self-determination behaviours in childhood has been relatively scarce. Given that culturally and linguistically diverse families may have different understandings or definitions of self-determination behaviours, we qualitatively investigated five Korean American mothers' perceptions and definitions of self-determination education for their children with autism spectrum disorder. Using a phenomenological approach, we analysed data using the constant comparative analysis method (Glaser & Strauss, 1967). Three main themes were identified: (1) emerging perceptions of self-determination, (2) value conflicts of self-determination, and (3) mothers' cultural influence on children's development of self-determination. Background: In chronic myelogenous leukemia, reciprocal translocation between chromosome 9 and chromosome 22 generates a chimeric protein, Bcr-Abl, that leads to hyperactivity of tyrosine kinase-linked signaling transduction. The therapeutic agent nilotinib inhibits Bcr-Abl/DDR1 and can cross the blood-brain barrier, but its potential impact on neuroinflammatory responses and cognitive function has not been studied in detail.Methods: The effects of nilotinib in vitro and in vivo were assessed by a combination of RT-PCR, real-time PCR, western blotting, ELISA, immunostaining, and/or subcellular fractionation. In the in vitro experiments, the effects of 200 ng/mL LPS or PBS on BV2 microglial cells, primary microglia or primary astrocytes pre- or post-treated with 5 µM nilotinib or vehicle were evaluated. The in vivo experiments involved wild-type mice administered a 7-day course of daily injections with 20 mg/kg nilotinib (i.p.) or vehicle before injection with 10 mg/kg LPS (i.p.) or PBS.Results: In BV2 microglial cells, pre- and post-treatment with nilotinib altered LPS-induced proinflammatory/anti-inflammatory cytokine mRNA levels by suppressing AKT/P38/SOD2 signaling. Nilotinib treatment also significantly downregulated LPS-stimulated proinflammatory cytokine levels in primary microglia and primary astrocytes by altering P38/STAT3 signaling. Experiments in wild-type mice showed that nilotinib administration affected LPS-mediated microglial/astroglial activation in a brain region-specific manner in vivo. In addition, nilotinib significantly reduced proinflammatory cytokine IL-1β, IL-6 and COX-2 levels and P38/STAT3 signaling in the brain in LPS-treated wild-type mice. Importantly, nilotinib treatment rescued LPS-mediated spatial working memory impairment and cortical dendritic spine number in wild-type mice.Conclusions: Our results indicate that nilotinib can modulate neuroinflammatory responses and cognitive function in LPS-stimulated wild-type mice. Phenylketonuria (PKU) is a common genetic metabolic disorder that causes phenylalanine accumulation in the blood. The most serious symptoms are related to the brain, as intellectual disability, seizure, and microcephaly are commonly found in poorly treated PKU patients and the babies of maternal PKU. However, the mechanism of hyperphenylalaninemia on human neurodevelopment is still unclear. Here we utilized human induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived cerebral organoids to investigate the neurotoxicity of hyperphenylalaninemia. Cerebral organoids at days 40 or 100 were treated with different concentrations of phenylalanine for 5 days. After phenylalanine treatments, the cerebral organoids displayed alterations in organoid size, induction of apoptosis, and depletion of neural progenitor cells. However, phenylalanine did not have an impact on neurons and glia, including astrocytes, immature oligodendrocytes, and mature oligodendrocytes. Remarkably, a reduction in the thickness of the cortical rosettes and a decrease in myelination at the intermediate zone were inspected with the elevated phenylalanine concentrations. RNA-seq of phenylalanine-treated organoids revealed that gene sets related to apoptosis, p53 signaling pathway, and TNF signaling pathway via NF-kB were enriched in upregulated genes, while those related to cell cycle and amino acid metabolism were enriched in downregulated genes. In addition, there were several microcephaly disease genes, such as ASPM , LMNB1 , and CENPE , ranked at the top of the downregulated genes. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the predictability of breast MRI for pathologic complete response (pCR) by molecular subtype in patients with breast cancer receiving neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) and investigate the MRI findings that can mimic residual malignancy. Methods: A total of 506 patients with breast cancer who underwent MRI after NAC and underwent surgery between January and December 2018 were included. Two breast radiologists dichotomized the post-NAC MRI findings as radiologic complete response (rCR) and no-rCR. The diagnostic performance of MRI predicting pCR was evaluated. pCR was determined based on the final pathology reports. Tumors were divided according to hormone receptor (HR) and human epidermal growth factor receptor (HER) 2. Residual lesions on post-NAC MRI were divided into overt and subtle which classified as nodularity or delayed enhancement. Pearson's χ2 and Wilcoxon rank-sum tests were used for MRI findings causing false-negative pCR. Results: The overall pCR rate was 30.04%. The overall accuracy for predicting pCR using MRI was 76.68%. The accuracy was significantly different by subtypes (p < 0.001), as follows in descending order: HR − /HER2 − (85.63%), HR + /HER2 − (82.84%), HR + /HER2 + (69.37%), and HR − /HER2 + (62.38%). MRI in the HR − /HER2 + type showed the highest false-negative rate (18.81%) for predicting pCR. The subtle residual enhancement observed only in the delayed phase was associated with false-negative findings (76.2%, p = 0.016). Conclusions: The diagnostic accuracy of MRI for predicting pCR differed by molecular subtypes. When the residual enhancement on MRI after NAC is subtle and seen only in the delayed phase, overinterpretation of residual tumors should be performed with caution. The clinical characteristics and the effect of viral RNA loads on fatality in 56 patients with severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) were analyzed. The non-survival group (12 patients) demonstrated a significantly higher mean age (77 years) than the survival group (44 patients, 65 years) (p = 0.003). The survival rates were 91.7% and 8.3% in patients with Ct values ≥30 and differed significantly (p = 0.001) in the survival and non-survival groups, respectively. The survival rates were 52.4% and 47.6% in patients with viral copy numbers ≥10,000 and 94.3% and 5.7% in patients with viral copy numbers <10,000 in the survival and non-survival groups, respectively (p = 0.001). In a multivariate analysis, viral copy numbers and initial Acute Psychologic Assessment and Chronic Health Evaluation II (APACHE II) scores were identified as the factors affecting fatality (p = 0.015 and 0.011, respectively). Background: Early adulthood is a significant period for preventive depression management for a healthy pregnancy. However, previous public health initiatives have not yet emphasized preparation for a healthy pregnancy in this population. In addition, pregnancy planning has traditionally been regarded as women's responsibility, so intervention strategies may differ by gender. This study explored intentions of preventive depression management for a healthy pregnancy among unmarried college students, as well as factors influencing those intentions, by applying the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) model. Methods: For this cross-sectional survey, 828 unmarried college students aged 18–29 were recruited from a national university in Korea from July to September 2019. The chi-square test and t-test were used to compare gender differences in general characteristics, the current level of depression, and constructs of the extended TPB. Hierarchical regression was performed to identify factors influencing the intention of preventive depression management for a healthy pregnancy. Results: The intention to manage depression was significantly higher in men than in women (t = 2.36, p = 0.019). The factors affecting the intention of preventive depression management for a healthy pregnancy were components of TPB in both women and men, of which self-efficacy had the greatest effect (female: β = 0.34, p < 0.001, male: β = 0.30, p < 0.001). The current level of depression was a significant factor for women only (β = 0.10, p = 0.014). Conclusions: Our study results underscore the need for nurses to perform preventive interventions and provide directions to develop interventions to improve the intention of depression management for unmarried college students. It is necessary to intervene with all the constructs of the TPB, especially self-efficacy, for both men and women. It is also important to check and address the current depression status of unmarried female college students. An analysis of the factors affecting the intention to manage depression for a healthy future pregnancy identified the components of the Theory of Planned Behavior as influencing factors in both men and women. In particular, self-efficacy had the greatest influence. However, the current level of depression was only a significant factor among women. These findings could help nurses recognize differences in gender characteristics for the intention of preventive depression management for a healthy pregnancy, and provide evidence to develop and implement the intervention. Introduction: The health problem of postmenopausal women is emerging as an important problem due to the increased aging population. This study investigated the association between dietary inflammatory index (DII) and bone markers in postmenopausal women. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 132 postmenopausal women aged 45–70 years. The DII score was calculated using the 3-day food records and divided into tertiles according to the DII score. The lifestyle factors that could affect bone mineral density (BMD) in postmenopausal women were investigated and included the EuroQol- 5 Dimension (EQ-5D), physical activity, and eating habits. Skeletal muscle index-weight (SMIw) was used to evaluate skeletal muscle mass, and alkaline phosphatase (ALP), bone-specific alkaline phosphatase (BSALP), and phosphorus (P) measured as bone biomarkers. The BMD was measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, and the association between anthropometric, biochemistry, BMD, and DII was assessed. Results: In the anti-inflammatory group, a high intake of fiber, vitamins, and minerals was observed. After adjusting for confound factors, with higher DII score, percent body fat increased (β = 0.168, p = 0.012), and SMIw decreased linear regression analysis (β = −0.329, p = 0.037, respectively). For biochemistry, confound factors were adjusted, with higher DII score, ALP, BSALP and P decreased and DII score increased (β = −0.057, p = 0.002, β = −0.167, p = 0.004, β = −1.799, p = 0.026, respectively). The relationship between DII and BMD was not significant, but osteopenia increased as DII score increased. How and when do opportunities for political participation through courts change under authoritarianism? Although China is better known for tight political control than for political expression, the 2008 Open Government Information (OGI) regulation ushered in a surge of political-legal activism. We draw on an original dataset of 57,095 OGI lawsuits, supplemented by interview data and government documents, to show how a feedback loop between judges and court users shaped possibilities for political activism and complaint between 2008 and 2019. Existing work suggests that authoritarian leaders crack down on legal action when they feel politically threatened. In contrast, we find that courts minted, defined, and popularized new legal labels to cut off access to justice for the super-active litigants whose lawsuits had come to dominate the OGI docket. Objectives: Age‐at‐death estimation provides biological anthropologists with fundamental biographic information to help resolve various theoretical and practical questions about both individual expression and populational trends in present and past contexts. Particularly, researchers interested in reconstructing past populations' mortality profiles have favored using Boldsen and colleagues' Transition Analysis (TA2), as the method provides both methodological and statistical solutions for optimally treating traditional ordinal, categorical score data from multiple age indicators. In this article, we present an assessment of TA2 to better understand its age estimation patterns and trends when applied to a large‐scale, documented Asian skeletal sample. Materials and methods: Specifically, this study examines the patterns of error and bias of TA2 when applied to three Asian populations. We assess cumulative effects of the age estimates in mortality reconstruction, and TA2's ability to accurately characterize the effects of covariates (e.g., sex, stature) that are linked to inequal social status and differential access to resources and known to further cause mortality disparities. Results: The results show that age estimates of three age indicators (the pubic symphysis, auricular surface, and cranial sutures) combined with an informed prior produced the most accurate age estimates across all three Asian samples. Thus, the age composition of a target skeletal sample dictates the accuracy of TA2 estimates, and therefore demographic parameters. Discussion Although the exact parameter values may differ from the true values and a consistent underestimation of female age‐at‐death and survivorship is evident, TA2 recovers a realistic approximation of a mortality pattern by revealing (previously hidden) elderly individuals. Bovine testicular hyaluronidase (BTH), which accelerates the absorption and dispersion of drugs by decomposing hyaluronan in subcutaneous tissues, has been used in medical applications, including local anesthesia, ophthalmology, and dermatosurgery. The requirement of N -glycans for the activity of human hyaluronidase has been reported, and BTH has greater activity than human hyaluronidase. However, the N -glycan characteristics of BTH are unclear. From a commercial BTH source containing additional proteins, purified BTH (pBTH) was obtained using size exclusion chromatography, and the structures and quantities of its N -glycans were analyzed using liquid chromatography (LC)-electrospray ionization-higher energy collisional dissociation (HCD)-tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS). In pBTH, 32 N -glycans were identified, with 12 sialylations (39.0% of total N -glycan content), nine core-fucosylations (31.5%), six terminal galactosylations (14.6%), five high-mannosylations (13.7%), and four bisecting N -acetylglucosamine structures (7.8%). The presence of sialylated glycopeptides in pBTH was confirmed by nano-LC-HCD-MS/MS analysis. The absolute quantity of all N -glycans was calculated as 1.4 pmol (0.6 pmol for sialylation) in pBTH (1.0 pmol). The sialylation level (related to half-life, thermal stability, resistance to proteolysis, and solubility) was 24.4 times higher than that of human hyaluronidase. The hyaluronan degradation activity of de-sialylated pBTH decreased to 41.2 ± 4.2%, showing that sialylated N -glycans were required for pBTH activity as well. This is the first study to identify and quantify 32 N -glycans of pBTH and investigate their structural roles in its activity. The presence of larger amounts of sialylated N -glycans in pBTH than in human hyaluronidase suggests a greater utilization of pBTH. The rapid development of computing applications demands novel low‐energy consumption devices for information processing. Among various candidates, magnetoelectric heterostructures hold promise for meeting the required voltage and power goals. Here, a route to low‐voltage control of magnetism in 30 nm Fe0.5Rh0.5/100 nm 0.68PbMg1/3Nb2/3O3‐0.32PbTiO3 (PMN‐PT) heterostructures is demonstrated wherein the magnetoelectric coupling is achieved via strain‐induced changes in the Fe0.5Rh0.5 mediated by voltages applied to the PMN‐PT. We describe approaches to achieve high‐quality, epitaxial growth of Fe0.5Rh0.5 on the PMN‐PT films and, a methodology to probe and quantify magnetoelectric coupling in small thin‐film devices via studies of the anomalous Hall effect. By comparing the spin‐flop field change induced by temperature and external voltage, the magnetoelectric coupling coefficient is estimated to reach ≈7 × 10−8 s m−1 at 325 K while applying a −0.75 V bias. Human milk lipids provide not only energy but also indispensable bioactive components such as essential fatty acids. To establish the recommended daily intake value and guidelines for infant formula, a reference library of fatty acid composition has been generated from 4 Asian countries (South Korea, China, Vietnam, and Pakistan). Regardless of country, palmitic acid (C16:0), linoleic acid (C18:1), and linolenic acid (C18:2) were the 3 most abundant fatty acids in human milk and account for more than 75% of total fatty acids (total FA). However, there were several considerable differences between fatty acids, particularly n-3 and n-6 (omega-3 and omega-6) groups. Chinese mothers' milk had a high concentration of linoleic acid at 24.38 ± 10.02% of total FA, which may be due to maternal diet. Among the 4 countries, Pakistani mothers' milk contained a high amount of saturated fatty acid (56.83 ± 5.96% of total FA), and consequently, polyunsaturated fatty acids, including n-3 and n-6, were significantly lower than in other countries. It is noteworthy that docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in Pakistani mothers' milk was 44.8 ± 33.3 mg/L, which is only 25 to 30% of the levels in the other 3 countries, suggesting the need for DHA supplementation for infants in Pakistan. Moreover, the ratio of n-6 to n-3 was also remarkably high in Pakistani mothers' milk (15.21 ± 4.96), being 1.4- to 1.7-fold higher than in other countries. The average DHA:ARA ratio in Asian human milk was 1.01 ± 0.79. Korean mothers' milk showed a high DHA:ARA ratio, with a value of 1.30 ± 0.98, but Pakistani mothers' milk had a significantly lower value (0.42 ± 0.12). The fatty acid compositions and anthropometric data of mother (body mass index, age) did not show any correlation. The obtained data might provide information about human milk compositions in the Asian region that could benefit from setting up recommended nutrient intake and infant formula for Asian babies. An anti-inflammatory diet has many beneficial effects on cardiometabolic diseases. Constitution type of traditional Korean medicine can predict cardiometabolic risk factors. We examined the relationship between vegetable consumption and the high-sensitive C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) level on cardiometabolic risk factors in Korean adults by constitution types. Data from 1,983 eligible participants (mean age, 44.3 years) were included in the present cross-sectional study. The inflammatory status of the participants was categorized into low- (<3.0 mg/L) or high-risk (≥3.0 mg/L) groups based on their constitution types. Cardiometabolic risk factors (abdominal obesity, elevated triglycerides, reduced high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, elevated blood pressure, elevated fasting plasma glucose, and ≥2 concurrent cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) risk factors) and dietary assessment of the participants were assessed. A total of 11.1% of Tae-eumin (TE) and 4.9% of non-TE groups had a higher hs-CRP level (TE: 6.6 ± 0.2, non-TE: 8.4 ± 0.3) than a low hs-CRP level TE and non-TE (TE: 0.9 ± 0.1, non-TE: 0.6 ± 0.1). Vegetable consumption of <91.5 g/day was highly associated with a high-risk hs-CRP level (adjusted odds ratio (ORs): second tertile (T2): 2.290, (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.285–4.082); first tertile (T1): 2.474 (95% CI: 1.368–4.475), P = 0.003) compared with that of the highest (T3) in TE. Low (T1 and T2) vegetable consumption was associated with a 54–63% increased prevalence of more than two concurrent CVDs risk factors compared with that of the highest in the TE group P = 0.012 . Higher vegetable consumption greatly decreased the prevalence of CVDs risk factors by 63–86% in the low-risk and high-risk hs-CRP TE groups. Our results highlight the cardioprotective effects of higher consumption of vegetables in Korean adults with TE. Evidence-based clinical risk factor management and multifaceted approaches at the community and population levels targeting prevention in high-burden groups are recommended to reduce the premature mortality attributed to CVD. The screening rate of diabetic retinopathy (DR) is low despite the importance of early diagnosis. We investigated the predictive value of dietary glutamic acid and aspartic acid for diagnosis of DR using the Korea National Diabetes Program cohort study. The 2067 patients with type 2 diabetes without DR were included. The baseline intakes of energy, glutamic acid and aspartic acid were assessed using a 3-day food records. The risk of DR incidence based on intake of glutamic acid and aspartic acid was analyzed. The DR group was older, and had higher HbA1c, longer DM duration, lower education level and income than non-DR group (all p < 0.05). The intake of total energy, glutamic acid and aspartic acid were lower in DR group than non-DR group (p = 0.010, p = 0.025 and p = 0.042, respectively). There was no difference in the risk of developing DR according to the intake of glutamic acid and ascorbic acid. But, aspartic acid intake had a negative correlation with PDR. Hence, the intake of glutamic acid and aspartic acid did not affect in DR incidence. However, lower aspartic acid intake affected the PDR incidence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To characterize the carriage of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the gut microbiome of healthy individuals. Fecal carriage of ARGs was investigated in 61 healthy individuals aged 30 to 59 years through whole metagenome sequencing of the gut microbiome and a targeted metagenomic approach. The number of ARGs in the gut microbiome was counted and normalized per million predicted genes (GPM). In the Korean population, the resistome ranged from 49.7 to 292.5 GPM (median 89.7). Based on the abundance of ARGs, the subjects were categorised into high (> 120 GPM), middle (60‒120 GPM), and low (< 60 GPM) ARG groups. Individuals in the high ARG group tended to visit hospitals more often (P = 0.065), particularly for upper respiratory tract infections (P = 0.066), and carried more blaCTX-M (P = 0.008). The targeted metagenome approach for bla and plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance (PMQR) genes revealed a high fecal carriage rate; 23% or 13.1% of the subjects carried blaCTX-M or blaCMY-2, respectively. Regarding PMQR genes, 59% of the subjects carried PMQR, and 83% of them harboured 2‒4 PMQR genes (qnrB 44.3%, qnrS 47.5% etc.). The presence of blaCTX-M correlated with ARG abundance in the gut resistome, whereas PMQR genes were irrelevant to other ARGs (P = 0.176). While Japan boasts a universal healthcare system and state-of-the-art medical technology, healthcare has often been denied to those who do not conform to moral ideals of a deserving patient. In underclass enclaves known as yoseba (day laborers' quarter), patients have been frequently turned away or blacklisted on grounds of their abnormality and non-compliance. As much as healthcare was enmeshed in the normative bonds of family and community sanctioned by the state, yoseba men were considered as outsiders who neglected their duties of care, thus, undeserving of any form of care themselves. Focusing on the struggle for healthcare in a yoseba enclave in Yokohama over the past three decades, this paper explores how various practices of care have been improvised in this last refuge for the underclass men. The relentless endeavor pursued by local medical activists reveals how attending to yoseba patients required creative techniques of spatio-temporal attunement to make healthcare a communal project. Objectives: To clarify CT findings that predict outcome of conservative treatment in patients with non-strangulated adhesive small bowel obstruction (SBO).Methods: Unenhanced and contrast-enhanced abdominopelvic CT studies in 189 patients with adhesive SBO who had initial conservative treatment were reviewed. The CT findings included transition zone, beak signs, maximum bowel diameter, bowel diameter ratio, decreased bowel wall enhancement, increased unenhanced bowel wall attenuation, anterior parietal adhesion, bowel wall thickening, closed-loop obstruction, small bowel feces sign, whirl sign, mesenteric haziness, mesenteric, peritoneal fluid, and submucosal edema. These findings were statistically compared according to the success or failure of treatment.Results: Conservative treatment succeeded in 144 patients (76.2%) and failed in 45 patients (23.8%). At multivariate analysis, the lack of small bowel feces sign, focal, diffuse mesenteric haziness, and moderate amount of mesenteric fluid were independent findings predicting failure of conservative treatment, with odds ratios of 5.23, 5.5, 13.55, and 4.89, respectively. The presence of all significant findings showed a high specificity of 97.2% with positive likelihood ratio of 8.8. If CT scans showed none of the three significant findings, the negative predictive value was 97.6% and negative likelihood ratio was 0.08.Conclusions: The lack of small bowel feces sign, focal, diffuse mesenteric haziness, and moderate amount of mesenteric fluid are independent CT findings predicting the failure of conservative treatment in patients with non-strangulated adhesive SBO. Higher motivation could support to lead behavioral change for obese children and adolescents. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a nutrition care process (NCP)–based intervention targeted on diet and weight status in moderate to severe obese children and adolescents in Korea. One hundred four subjects (mean age: 10.95 years, body mass index (BMI) ≥97th percentile of age-sex) participated in the present study. Subjects were divided into a usual care group (UG) and a nutrition group (NG). All participants underwent nutrition education 6 times. The NG received individual access and continuous monitoring and setting goals with respect to nutritional problems. Consumption of high-calorie, low-nutrient (HCLN) food was significantly decreased (P <.05) and the Diet Quality Index-International (DQI-I) score also increased with respect to sodium (P <.001). The total self-efficacy score was increased from 9.15 to 10.14 points (P <.01). After 24 weeks, the BMI-z-score decreased from 2.27 to 2.19 in the NG (P <.05); however, no group difference was found. BMI-z-score was negatively associated with self-efficacy (β = -0.03, P <.019). NCP-based intervention might be helpful to solve dietary problems by enhancing self-efficacy and lower BMI-z-score in moderately to severely obese children and adolescents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective was to analyse bacterial composition and abundance of Clostridioides difficile in gut microbiome of patients with C. difficile infection (CDI) in association with clinical characteristics. Whole metagenome sequencing of gut microbiome of 26 CDI patients was performed, and the relative abundance of C. difficile and its toxin genes was measured. Clinical characteristics of the patients were obtained through medical records. A strong correlation between the abundance of C. difficile and tcdB genes in CDI patients was found. The relative abundance of C. difficile in the gut microbiome ranged from undetectable to 2.8% (median 0.089). Patients with fever exhibited low abundance of C. difficile in their gut, and patients with fewer C. difficile organisms required long-term anti-CDI treatment. Abundance of Bifidobacterium and Bacteroides negatively correlated with that of C. difficile at the genus level. CDI patients were clustered using the bacterial composition of the gut: one with high population of Enterococcus (cluster 1, n = 12) and another of Bacteroides or Lactobacillus (cluster 2, n = 14). Cluster1 showed significantly lower bacterial diversity and clinical cure at the end of treatment. Additionally, patients with CDI exhibited increased ARGs; notably, blaTEM, blaSHV and blaCTX-M were enriched. C. difficile existed in variable proportion of the gut microbiome in CDI patients. Core–shell Al@Al 2 O 3 , which was obtained by hydrothermal surface oxidation of Al metal particles, was used as the support in supported Ni catalysts for CO and CO 2 methanation. The core–shell micro-structured support (Al@Al 2 O 3) helped develop a highly efficient Ni-based catalyst compared with conventional γ-Al 2 O 3 for these reactions. Moreover, the deposition–precipitation method was shown to outperform the wet impregnation method in the preparation of the active supported Ni catalysts. The catalysts were characterized using various techniques, namely, N 2 physisorption, H 2 chemisorption, CO 2 chemisorption, temperature-programmed reduction with H 2 , temperature-programmed desorption after CO 2 adsorption, X-ray diffraction, inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy. Higher Ni dispersion when using Al@Al 2 O 3 as the support and the deposition–precipitation method resulted in better catalytic performance for CO methanation. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common progressive neurodegenerative disease worldwide, but its cause remains unclear. Although a few drugs can provide temporary and partial relief of symptoms in some patients, no curative treatment is available. Therefore, attention has been focused on research using stem cells to treat AD. Among stem cells, mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been used to treat the related pathologies in animal models of AD, and other neurodegenerative disease. This review describes latest research trends on the use of MSC-based therapies in AD and its action of mechanism. MSCs have several beneficial effects. They would be specified as the reduction of neuroinflammation, the elimination of amyloid-β, neurofibrillary tangles, and abnormal protein degradation, the promotion of autophagy-associated and blood-brain barrier recoveries, the upregulation of acetylcholine levels, improved cognition, and the recovery of mitochondrial transport. Therefore, this review describes the latest research trends in MSC-based therapy for AD by demonstrating the importance of MSC-based therapy and understanding of its mechanisms in AD and discusses the limitations and perspectives of stem cell therapy in AD. BACKGROUND The significance of high‐molecular‐weight glutenin subunits (HMW‐GSs) and rye translocations, and their associations with gluten strength for hard wheat used for making bread has been understood well, but remains poorly understood for soft wheat used for making cookies. The influences of HMW‐GSs and rye translocations on the dough‐mixing properties and cookie‐baking quality of soft wheat were investigated using 50 US eastern soft winter (ESW) wheat varieties possessing 14 predominant HMW‐GS profiles. RESULTS: Glu‐A1 and Glu‐B1 loci only influenced dough‐mixing properties significantly, whereas the Glu‐D1 locus influenced both dough‐mixing properties and cookie‐baking quality significantly. The subunits 1, 7* + 8 and 5 + 10 at the Glu‐A1, Glu‐B1 and Glu‐D1 loci, respectively, were associated with a long midline peak time, whereas only the rare subunits 2 + 121 at the Glu‐D1 locus exhibited significant associations with improved cookie‐baking quality of ESW wheat. The contributions of rye translocations to dough‐mixing properties and cookie‐baking quality depended on HMW‐GS profiles. Three HMW‐GS profiles (2*, 7 + 9, 2 + 121), (2*, 7 + 8, 2 + 121) and (1, 7 + 8, 2 + 121) were identified as being desirable for making large‐diameter cookies. Flour protein content, lactic acid (LA), and sodium carbonate (SC) solvent retention capacities and softness equivalence were identified as effective predictors of cookie diameter and accounted for 79% of the variation in cookie diameter. CONCLUSION: Subunits 2 + 121 have significant associations with the protein characteristics and cookie‐baking quality of soft wheat. The determination of HMW‐GS composition would be an effective tool in soft‐wheat breeding programs for quickly identifying and selecting acceptable breeding lines possessing desirable cookie‐baking potential. Dielectric capacitors can store and release electric energy at ultrafast rates and are extensively studied for applications in electronics and electric power systems. Among various candidates, thin films based on relaxor ferroelectrics, a special kind of ferroelectric with nanometer-sized domains, have attracted special attention because of their high energy densities and efficiencies. We show that high-energy ion bombardment improves the energy storage performance of relaxor ferroelectric thin films. Intrinsic point defects created by ion bombardment reduce leakage, delay low-field polarization saturation, enhance high-field polarizability, and improve breakdown strength. We demonstrate energy storage densities as high as ~133 joules per cubic centimeter with efficiencies exceeding 75%. Deterministic control of defects by means of postsynthesis processing methods such as ion bombardment can be used to overcome the trade-off between high polarizability and breakdown strength. Object: Measuring handgrip strength is a useful method to evaluate sarcopenia. No study has shown the trends of handgrip strength to weight ratio among Korean adolescents by year. This study aimed to determine the trends of handgrip strength among Korean adolescents using data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). Data of 2304 adolescents who participated in the KNHANES between 2014 and 2017 were obtained. The handgrip-to-weight ratios were categorized by age, sex, and year. Results: Handgrip strength in adolescents decreased from 28.67 kg in 2014 to 27 kg in 2017 (P for trend < 0.05). The handgrip-to-weight ratio also decreased from 51.48 in 2014 to 48.18 in 2017 (P for trend < 0.05). The handgrip strength and handgrip-to-weight ratio also decreased among boys and girls over the years 2014–2017 (P for trend < 0.05). The results of the present study indicate that the handgrip-to-weight ratio decreased in Korean adolescents from the years 2014 to 2017, and a declining overall ratio indicates a decrease in the health status among Korean adolescents. DNA has been widely investigated as a carrier for drug delivery. Here, we describe a macroscopic DNA film that has been generated enzymatically. This DNA film was subsequently coated with thrombin (TB) using an aptamer–protein interaction, to expedite hemostasis over a large area. The DNA film coated with TB (DNA patch) significantly improved plasma hemostasis by acting as a coagulative scaffold for TB, as well as carrying localized TB. Effects of metal promoter on CO and CO 2 methanation were examined over Ni-M (M = Mn, Ce, Zr, Mg, K, Zn, or V)/Al@Al 2 O 3 catalysts prepared by the co-impregnation method. Ni-M (M = Mn, Ce, or Zr)/γ-Al 2 O 3 catalysts were also investigated for comparison. The prepared catalysts were characterized with a variety of techniques such as N 2 physisorption, CO 2 chemisorption, H 2 chemisorption, temperature-programmed reduction with H 2 (H 2 -TPR), temperature-programmed desorption of CO 2 (CO 2 -TPD), X-ray diffraction (XRD), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and in-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS). Among different promoters, Mn, Ce, Mg, V, and Zr are beneficial to enhance both CO and CO 2 methanation activity due to the improvement of the Ni dispersion. The Ni-V/Al@Al 2 O 3 catalyst performs the highest CO methanation activity due to the largest Ni sites. However, it is not the best one for CO 2 methanation among tested catalysts because of the much decrease in CO 2 adsorption capacity. The promotional effect of Mn is the most remarkable for both CO and CO 2 methanation. On the other hand, the negative effect of K and Zn was observed on both CO and CO 2 methanation by the small number of active Ni sites and the decrease in the amount of basic sites. The CO 2 methanation mechanism over Ni-Mn/Al@Al 2 O 3 catalyst is elucidated by the transform route: adsorbed carbonate species – formate species – methane under hydrogenation process. Scenario-based technology roadmaps (TRM) have been used to analyse future uncertainties in the technology planning phase. However, there is a limitation in the existing related studies that the internal and external factors of the increasing uncertainty of the future are not considered. In response, this study proposes a framework that analyses the textual big data to understand the relationship between factors that may affect future uncertainty and build a TRM through scenarios based on these relationships. To do this, Fuzzy Cognitive Map technique, which analyses causal relationships between various factors in fuzzy graph form, is incorporated into TRM. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed framework, an illustrative case study was conducted using real data for an unmanned aerial vehicle. Purpose: To compare the non‐invasive keratographic tear film break‐up time (NIKBUT) and the location and pattern of non‐invasive keratographic tear film break‐up between normal group and each group of three dry eye disease (DED) subtypes. Methods: We enrolled 55 normal subjects and 250 patients with DED, who underwent tear meniscus height and NIKBUT measurements using the Keratograph® 5M. Ocular surface parameter assessments such as the fluorescein tear break‐up time, ocular surface staining, Schirmer's test, and lid margin and meibomian gland examinations were performed, and the ocular surface disease index was determined. These parameters, including the proportion of the first tear film break‐up location and simultaneous multiple tear film break‐up pattern, were compared amongst the normal and DED subtypes. Results: Aqueous‐deficient dry eye disease (ADDE) and ADDE/meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) subtypes showed lower NIKBUTs than those of the normal group, whilst NIKBUTs of the MGD subtype did not differ from those of the normal group. The NIKBUTs showed a good diagnostic ability in diagnosing dry eye except MGD only. The occurrence of the first tear film break‐up in the central location was significantly higher in both the ADDE and ADDE/MGD subtypes, comprising approximately 40% in both subtypes (p < 0.001). The proportion of a simultaneous multiple tear film break‐up pattern was higher in the ADDE and ADDE/MGD subtypes, at 60.9% and 45.5%, respectively (p < 0.001). Background: Unnecessary prolonged treatment with biologic agents for Crohn's disease (CD) patients with endoscopic complete remission (CR) might increase the opportunistic infections. Purpose: To evaluate computed tomography enterography (CTE) findings obtained on CD patients achieving endoscopic CR after anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α therapy. Material and Methods: Thirty-six consecutive patients with CD who had received anti-TNF- α therapy and undergone pre-and post-therapy CTE and ileocolonoscopy were initially enrolled. CTE was performed with a standard-dose enteric-phase scan. Eleven patients were excluded due to a mismatch of follow-up intervals or a long interval (>2 weeks) between CTE and ileocolonoscopy; additionally, five patients were excluded due to surgical intervention during the follow-up period. Therefore, 20 patients finally were analyzed. Two blinded readers evaluated the pre-and post-therapy CTE images by consensus for active inflammation, i.e. mural hyperenhancement, mural thickening (thickness > 3 mm), mural stratification, and increased peri-enteric fat attenuation in the rectum, colon, and terminal ileum. Endoscopic CR indicated mucosal healing identified by ileocolonoscopy and served as the reference standard. Results: Nine patients with 16 bowel segments showed endoscopic CR. Ten of those segments showed residual abnormalities including mild mural hyperenhancement (9/16, P = 0.03), mild mural thickening (6/16, P < 0.001), and both findings (5/16, P < 0.001) on post-therapy CTE. The non-CR group (11 patients; 17 bowel segments) showed a higher concordance rate with post-therapy CTE (88%, 15/17) than did the CR group (38%, 6/16) (P = 0.004). Conclusion: Residual mild mural hyperenhancement and mild mural thickening were seen on post-therapy CTE in over half of the bowel segments showing endoscopic CR. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

After exploring the transnational awareness of young students, the authors follow one student from first grade into high school. Adam is Muslim American, bilingual in Arabic and English, and learning French. He is an avid soccer player, but most of all, he has a perspective on the world that is expansive, inclusive, and curious. Adam has lessons to teach not only his peers but also his teachers.
