Non-Hermitian degeneracies, also known as exceptional points (EPs), have been the focus of much attention due to their singular eigenvalue surface structure. Nevertheless, as pertaining to a non-Hermitian metasurface platform, the reduction of an eigenspace dimensionality at the EP has been investigated mostly in a passive repetitive manner. Here, we propose an electrical and spectral way of resolving chiral EPs and clarifying the consequences of chiral mode collapsing of a non-Hermitian gated graphene metasurface. More specifically, the measured non-Hermitian Jones matrix in parameter space enables the quantification of nonorthogonality of polarisation eigenstates and half-integer topological charges associated with a chiral EP. Interestingly, the output polarisation state can be made orthogonal to the coalesced polarisation eigenstate of the metasurface, revealing the missing dimension at the chiral EP. In addition, the maximal nonorthogonality at the chiral EP leads to a blocking of one of the cross-polarised transmission pathways and, consequently, the observation of enhanced asymmetric polarisation conversion. We anticipate that electrically controllable non-Hermitian metasurface platforms can serve as an interesting framework for the investigation of rich non-Hermitian polarisation dynamics around chiral EPs.

An acoustic plasmonic mode in a graphene-dielectric-metal heterostructure has recently been spotlighted as a superior platform for strong light-matter interaction. It originates from the coupling of graphene plasmon with its mirror image and exhibits the largest field confinement in the limit of a nm-thick dielectric. Although recently detected in the far-field regime, optical near-fields of this mode are yet to be observed and characterized. Direct optical probing of the plasmonic fields reflected by the edges of graphene via near-field scattering microscope reveals a relatively small damping rate of the mid-IR acoustic plasmons in our devices, which allows for their real-space mapping even with unprotected, chemically grown, large-area graphene at ambient conditions. We show an acoustic mode that is twice as confined - yet 1.4 times less damped - compared to the graphene surface plasmon under similar conditions. We also image the resonant acoustic Bloch state in a 1D array of gold nanoribbons responsible for the high efficiency of the far-field coupling. Our results highlight the importance of acoustic plasmons as an exceptionally promising platform for large-area graphene-based optoelectronic devices operating in mid-IR.

Exceptional points, also known as non-Hermitian degeneracies, have been observed in parity-time symmetric metasurfaces as the parity-time symmetry breaking point. However, the parity-time symmetry condition puts constraints on the metasurface parameter space, excluding full examination of the unique properties that stem from an exceptional point. Here, we thus design a general non-Hermitian metasurface with a unit cell containing two orthogonally oriented split-ring-resonators with overlapping resonance but different scattering rates and radiation efficiencies. Such a design grants us full access to the parameter space around the exceptional point. The parameter space around the exceptional point is first examined by varying the incident radiation frequency and coupling between split-ring resonators. We further demonstrate that the exceptional point is also observable by varying the incident radiation frequency along with the incident angle. Through both methods we validate the existence of an exceptional point by observing unique level crossing behavior, eigenstate swapping under encirclement and asymmetric transmission of circularly polarized light., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Metamaterials, artificially engineered materials consisting of subwavelength unit cell, have shown potentials in light manipulation with their extraordinary optical properties. Especially, topological metamaterials possessing topologically protected surface states enable extremely robust control of light. Here, we demonstrate extremely broadband topological phase in a photonic topological metamaterials with double helix structure. In particular topological surface states are observed for all the frequencies below a certain cut-off, originating from a double Weyl point at zero frequency. The extreme bandwidth and robustness of the photonic topological metamaterial are beneficial for practical applications such as one-way waveguide and photonic integrated systems but also advantageous in design and fabrication since the only necessary condition is to satisfy the effective hyperbolic and chiral properties, without entailing strict periodic arrangement.

Manipulating the polarisation of light is crucial for sensing and imaging applications. One such aspect in particular is selective transmission of one circular polarisation (spin) when light is transmitted through a medium or a device. However, most present methods of achieving this have relatively low efficiency and selectivity, whilst high selectivity examples rely on lossy and complex three-dimensional helical or multilayer structures. Here, we propose a dielectric metamaterial approach for achieving spin-selective transmission of electromagnetic waves, utilizing spin-controlled constructive or destructive interference between two Pancharatnam-Berry (PB) phases in conjunction with propagative dynamic phase. The dielectric metamaterial, consisting of monolithic silicon herringbone structures, exhibits a broadband operation in the terahertz regime whilst obtaining a spin-selective efficiency upwards of 60%. The extraordinary electronic properties of graphene, such as its continuously gate-variable ambipolar field effect and the resulting steep change in resistivity, provided the main thrusts for the rapid advance of graphene electronics. The gate-controllable electronic properties of graphene provide a route to efficiently manipulate the interaction of low-energy photons with massless Dirac fermions, which has recently sparked keen interest in graphene plasmonics. However, the electro-optic tuning capability of unpatterned graphene alone is still not strong enough for practical optoelectronic applications due to its nonresonant Drude-like behaviour. Here, we experimentally demonstrate that substantial gate-induced persistent switching and linear modulation of terahertz waves can be achieved in a two-dimensional artificial material, referred to as a metamaterial, into which an atomically thin, gated two-dimensional graphene layer is integrated. The gate-controllable light-matter interaction in the graphene layer can be greatly enhanced by the strong resonances and the corresponding field enhancement in the metamaterial. Although the thickness of the embedded single-layer graphene is more than 'six' orders of magnitude smaller than the wavelength (< {\lambda}/1,000,000), the one-atom-thick layer, in conjunction with the metamaterial, can modulate both the amplitude of the transmitted wave by up to 90 per cent and its phase by more than 40 degrees at room temperature. More interestingly, the gate-controlled active graphene metamaterials show hysteretic behaviour in the transmission of terahertz waves, especially when fabricated with multilayer graphene, which is indicative of persistent photonic memory effects.
