24. Neutral rains at Athens, Greece: A natural safeguard against acidification of rains

Abstract

Samples of all rains in a period from October, 1998 to January, 1999 at Athens, Greece, were collected. The pH values of almost all of these rains clustered in a high range of 7.0-7.5, with no relation between pH and their SO42-, NO3- and Cl- contents. In addition, a few rains with low contents of chemical components similar to pure water also were observed, giving a pH (approx. 5.5) of rain caused by dissolution of only atmospheric CO2 in it. These results indicate that the level of air pollution of Athens by human activity has become lower during the last decade, restoring the neutral condition of rain in this area. Furthermore, the Ca contents and Ca/Mg ratios in these rains, as well as their chemical and isotopic behavior, suggest that particles of calcium carbonate taken in as dust act as a neutralizer of rains. The dust must be derived not only from the urban area of Athens but also from its environs or areas distant from it. Such a mechanism causing universally neutral rains throughout the rainy season at Athens must have worked as a natural safeguard against rains acidified naturally and artificially from ancient times up to recent years, keeping the remains of ancient Greece in a good state of preservation during such a long period. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. 26. Environmental geochemistry of soils and waters of Susaki area, Korinthos, Greece

Abstract

Soil and water samples were collected from the Susaki area of Korinthos and analysed for heavy metals in order to evaluate their environmental impact. The geology of the studied area includes ultrabasic rocks and Neogene and Quaternary deposits whereas magnesite veins are found within the ultrabasic rocks. In the north part of the studied area post volcanic emissions of H2S, CO2 and H2O vapor continue to the present day. All the samples were analysed for heavy metals by the ICP method. The element ranges (in υg g-1) for soil samples are: Cu 11-63, Pb 5-256, Zn 21-604, Ni 183-2665, Co 12-124, Mn 456-1434, As 5-104, Sr 44-730, V 21-84, Cr 163-2346, Ba 48-218, Zr 3-41, Y 3-13. The meals Pb, Zn, Ni, Co, Cr, Fe, Cu, Mn, As and Sr are enriched in the Susaki soils. The element ranges for water samples are: Cu 65-103 υgL-1, Pb

40. Gallbladder cancer associated with cholesterosis.

Abstract

We report herein two cases of carcinoma in situ of the gallbladder associated with cholesterosis. The patient in case 1 was an 81-year-old man who underwent a cholecystectomy for cholelithiasis. The resected specimens revealed gallbladder cancer in the fundus which was diagnosed histologically as mucinous carcinoma. Other findings included 13-mm, 12-mm, and 5-mm polypoid lesions in the neck of the gallbladder which macroscopically appeared to be cholesterol polyps, but histologically demonstrated carcinoma in situ with cholesterosis. The patient in case 2 was a 76-year-old man in whom ultrasonography revealed a highly echogenic, elevated lesion in the gallbladder. Cholecystectomy was performed, and a 33 x 28-mm papillary, elevated lesion with cholesterosis was resected from the neck of the gallbladder. Histologically, this was demonstrated to be papillary adenocarcinoma in situ with cholesterosis surrounded by glandular dysplasia. The distribution of the carcinomas and cholesterosis in both of these patients suggests that the adenoma or carcinoma of the gallbladder had occurred first. Then, the tumor epithelium absorbed cholesterol from the bile, and foamy cells were produced. Thus, when treating cholesterol polyps, it should be remembered that it is often difficult to distinguish between cholesterol polyp and gallbladder cancer with cholesterosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We report a rare case of gallbladder cancer associated with a common bile duct neuroma, and a cystic liver lesion with histologic findings similar to an inflammatory pseudotumor, in a patient who had had no previous abdominal surgery. The patient was a 62-year-old man whose major complaint was fever. Ultrasonography and a computed tomography scan revealed gallstones, an elevated lesion in the gallbladder, and a cystic liver lesion. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography demonstrated stenosis of the common bile duct. Cultures of the cystic fluid and gallbladder bile were positive for Staphylococcus aureus. The patient underwent hepatectomy (inferior S4, S5, and S6), cholecystectomy, resection of the common bile duct, and right hemicolectomy. The resected specimens revealed gallbladder cancer with the microscopic appearance of a papillary adenocarcinoma, and a 12 x 4.5 x 3.5 cm cystic liver lesion with a wall 7 mm thick. Histologic studies of the wall of the cystic liver lesion revealed infiltration by histiocytes and plasma cells, and the presence of fibrous connective tissue, which findings are characteristic of inflammatory pseudotumors. Abstract

Correlations among identically charged pions were measured for pions produced in p p collisions at 360 GeV/c using the EHS spectrometer. The effective radius for pion production was determined to be 1.02±0.20 fm with a chaoticity factor 0.32±0.08. We attempted to obtain the radii in the directions parallel and perpendicular to the beam axis and found no difference between them. No multiplicity dependence of the radius was observed at this energy. A peak near zero in the four momentum transfer distribution showed significant deviation from a single Gaussian. The results of an analysis of the three like pion enhancement were consistent with those for two pions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A dog with juvenile acinar atrophy of the pancreas had degranulation and loss of the acinar cells. Transitional features from normal to degranulation were seen. Electron microscopically, the atrophic pancreas mainly consisted of epithelial cells of duct system, islet cells and multivesicular cells. Juvenile atrophy of the canine pancreas [1] is characterized by pancreatic enzyme deficiency in young dogs in association with a non-inflammatory lesion of the pancreas. Clinically there is polyphagia, weight loss, steatorrhea, diarrhea and coprohagia.

Abstract

A study of the properties of charm particles produced in 360 GeV/c p-p interactions is reported. The experiment was performed using the high resolution hydrogen bubble chamber LEBC in association with the European Hybrid Spectrometer at the CERN SPS. Details of the exposure and operation of the spectrometer are given and the methods used to extract the charm data are presented. The essential physics results on the decay properties (lifetime, branching ratios) as well as on the hadroproduction properties (cross sections forD, ",F, ?c,D, correlations between charm particles) are given.

Abstract

A dog with juvenile acinar atrophy of the pancreas had degranulation and loss of the acinar cells. Transitional features from normal to degranulation were seen. Electron microscopically, the atrophic pancreas mainly consisted of epithelial cells of duct system, islet cells and multivesicular cells.Juvenile atrophy of the canine pancreas [1] is characterized by pancreatic enzyme deficiency in young dogs in association with a non-inflammatory lesion of the pancreas. Clinically there is polyphagia, weight loss, steatorrhea, diarrhea and coprohagia.

48. Immunolocalization of steroidogenic enzymes P450scc, 3βHSD, P450c17 and P450arom in the corpus luteum of the Hokkaido brown bear (Ursus arctos yesoensis) in relation to delayed implantation

Abstract

The objective was the immunocytochemical localization of steroidogenic enzymes in the corpus luteum of Hokkaido brown bears during the period of delayed implantation. Cholesterol side-chain cleavage cytochrome P450 (P450scc), 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (3βHSD), 17α-hydroxylase cytochrome P450 (P450c17) and aromatase cytochrome P450 (P450arom) were localized as biosynthetic sites of pregnenolone, progesterone, androgens, and oestrogens, respectively. Ovaries containing corpora lutea were obtained from three mature bears during the expected delayed implantation period and ovarian sections were immunostained by the avidin–biotin–peroxidase complex method using polyclonal antibodies generated against steroidogenic enzymes of mammalian origin. P450scc and 3βHSD were localized in all luteal cells, whereas P450c17 (0.4–5.1% of 1000 cells) and P450arom (7.1–11.2% of 1000 cells) were localized in only a few luteal cells. These data suggest that luteal cells contain steroidogenic enzymes required for progesterone synthesis but also have a minimum capability for synthesizing androgen and oestrogen during the delayed implantation period in Hokkaido brown bears.
