Therefore, broad-spectrum antibiotics are recommended in the treatment of hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP). However, it remains controversial whether patients with early onset, non-ventilator HAP (NV-HAP) should also be empirically treated with broad-spectrum antibiotics. We compared the clinical benefit of ceftriaxone plus clindamycin vs piperacillin/tazobactam as the initial empirical treatment of adults with early NV-HAP.Patients and Methods: Retrospective cohort study was conducted in adult patients who were diagnosed with early, NV-HAP between January 2013 and June 2017 at a community-based tertiary care hospital. Patients were eligible for inclusion if they had received empiric treatment with either ceftriaxone and clindamycin or piperacillin/tazobactam for at least 3 days. Patients with increased risk of MDR pathogens were excluded.Results: A total of 89 patients were treated with ceftriaxone and clindamycin, while 124 received piperacillin/tazobactam. There were no significant differences between the two antibiotic groups with regard to median age, sex, or risk of pneumonia. The 30-day all-cause mortality did not differ significantly between the ceftriaxone plus clindamycin and piperacillin/tazobactam groups (4.5% vs 1.6%, P=0.202, respectively). However, in multivariate analysis, clinical failure was more frequent in the ceftriaxone plus clindamycin group than in the piperacillin/tazobactam group (HR 3.316; 95% CI, 1.589– 6918, P=0.001).Conclusion: Treatment with piperacillin/tazobactam was more effective than that with ceftriaxone plus clindamycin in patients with early NV-HAP. This study supports the recent treatment recommendations that patients with early NV-HAP should be treated empirically with broad-spectrum antibiotics.Keywords: empirical antibiotics, hospital-acquired infection, pneumonia, multiple drug resistance

The lubricating properties of water have been discussed extensively for millennia. Water films can exhibit wearless high friction in the form of cold ice, or act as lubricants in skating and skiing when a liquid. At the fundamental level, friction is the result of a balance between the rate of energy generation by phonon excitation during sliding and drainage of the energy from the interface by coupling with bulk atoms. Using atomic force microscopy, we found that when H2O intercalates between graphene and mica, it increases the friction between the tip and the substrate, dependent on the thickness of the water and graphene layers, while the magnitude of the increase in friction was reduced by D2O intercalation. With the help of first-principles density functional theory calculations, we explain this unexpected behavior by the increased spectral range of the vibration modes of graphene caused by water, and by better overlap of the graphene vibration modes with mica phonons, which favors more efficient energy dissipation. The larger increase in friction with H2O versus D2O shows that the high-frequency vibration modes of the water molecules play a very important role in the transfer of the vibrational energy of the graphene to the phonon bath of the substrate.

Butterfly wings possess distinct micro/nanostructures that contribute to their vibrant coloration, light-trapping capabilities, and sensitivity to various stimuli. These complex features have inspired the creation of diverse devices and systems, such as sensors, photovoltaics, photocatalysis, and robotics. Specifically, the wing scales of the Emerald Swallowtail (Papilio palinurus) display iridescent, polarization-sensitive, and retroreflective colors due to their hierarchical structures. However, current technologies fail to mimic these natural designs fully, limiting their practical application in everyday life. In this study, we introduce a groundbreaking method for fabricating artificial wing scales that emulate the biological structure's functionality with a much simpler geometry. By integrating self-graded lossy media into metallic micro-concavity arrays, we achieve pronounced iridescent effects in both coaxial and non-coaxial arrangements, while preserving retroreflective properties. In particular, the simplified design allows for switchable color patterns based on the viewing angle. An atomistic understanding of dry-etching processes with reactive molecules is crucial for achieving geometric integrity in highly scaled semiconductor devices. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are instrumental, but the lack of reliable force fields hinders the widespread use of MD in etching simulations. In this work, we develop an accurate neural network potential (NNP) for simulating the etching process of amorphous Si 3 N 4 with HF molecules. The surface reactions in diverse local environments are considered by incorporating several types of training sets: baseline structures, reaction-specific data, and general-purpose training sets. Furthermore, the NNP is refined through iterative comparisons with the density functional theory results. Using the trained NNP, we carry out etching simulations, which allow for detailed observation and analysis of key processes such as preferential sputtering, surface modification, etching yield, threshold energy, and the distribution of etching products. Additionally, we develop a simple continuum model, built from the MD simulation results, which effectively reproduces the surface composition obtained with MD simulations. By establishing a computational framework for atomistic etching simulation and scale bridging, this work will pave the way for more accurate and efficient design of etching processes in the semiconductor industry, enhancing device performance and manufacturing precision.

Therapeutic advancements in treatments for cancer, a leading cause of mortality worldwide, have lagged behind the increasing incidence of this disease. There is a growing interest in multifaceted approaches for cancer treatment, such as chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy, but due to their low efficacy and severe side effects, there is a need for the development of new cancer therapies. Recently, the human microbiome, which is comprised of various microorganisms, has emerged as an important research field due to its potential impact on cancer treatment. Among these microorganisms, Bifidobacterium infantis has been shown to significantly improve the efficacy of various anticancer drugs. However, research on the role of B. infantis in cancer treatment remains insufficient. Thus, in this study, we explored the anticancer effect of treatment with B. infantis DS1685 supernatant (BI sup) in colorectal and breast cancer cell lines. Treatment with BI sup induced SMAD4 expression to suppress cell growth in colon and breast cancer cells. Furthermore, a decrease in tumor cohesion was observed through the disruption of the regulation of EMT-related genes by BI sup in 3D spheroid models. Based on these findings, we anticipate that BI sup could play an adjunctive role in cancer therapy, and future cotreatment of BI sup with various anticancer drugs may lead to synergistic effects in cancer treatment.

Biotin is an essential coenzyme involved in various metabolic processes across all known organisms, with biotinylation being crucial for the activity of carboxylases. BirA from Haemophilus influenzae is a bifunctional protein that acts as a biotin protein ligase and a transcriptional repressor. This study reveals the crystal structures of Hin BirA in both its apo- and holo-(biotinyl-5'-AMP bound) forms. As a class II BirA, it consists of three domains: N-terminal DNA binding domain, central catalytic domain, and C-terminal SH3-like domain. The structural analysis shows that the biotin-binding loop forms an ordered structure upon biotinyl-5'-AMP binding. This facilitates its interaction with the ligand and promotes protein dimerization. Comparative studies with other BirA homologs from different organisms indicate that the residues responsible for binding biotinyl-5'-AMP are highly conserved. This study also utilized AlphaFold2 to model the potential heterodimeric interaction between Hin BirA and biotin carboxyl carrier protein, thereby providing insights into the structural basis for biotinylation. Background: Several studies have investigated the relationship between ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). However, complex and conflicting results have generated confusion in the application of these results., Objective: We aimed to investigate whether the association between UDCA and COVID can also be demonstrated through the analysis of a large-scale cohort., Methods: This retrospective study used local and nationwide cohorts, namely the Jeonbuk common data model cohort (JBUH CDM) and the Korean National Health Insurance claim-based database (NHIS). We investigated UDCA intake and its relationship with COVID-19 susceptibility and severity using validated propensity score (PS) matching., Results: Regarding the COVID-19 susceptibility, the adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) value of the UDCA intake was significantly lowered to 0.71 in the case of JBUH CDM (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.52-0.98), and was significantly lowered to 0.93 (95% CI: 0.90-0.96) in the NHIS. Regarding the COVID-19 severity, the UDCA intake was found to be significantly lowered to 0.21 (95% CI: 0.09-0.46) in the case of JBUH CDM. It was also found that the aHR value was significantly lowered to 0.77 in the case of the NHIS (95% CI: 0.62-0.95)., Conclusions: Using a large-scale local and nationwide cohort, we confirmed that UDCA intake was significantly associated with the reduction of COVID-19 susceptibility and severity. These trends remained consistent regardless of the UDCA dosage. This suggests the potential of UDCA as a preventive and therapeutic agent for COVID-19.

We evaluated the diagnostic performance of the β-d-glucan (BDG) test (Beijing Gold Mountain River Tech) in diagnosing invasive fungal disease (IFD) and its variations among patients with different risks. Patients ≥18 years old who underwent a serum BDG test (positive cutoff value >80 pg/ml) from April 2017 through May 2018 were collected consecutively. Patients were classified into three groups: group 1, patients with host factors as defined by the prior 2008 European Organization for Research and Treatment (EORTC) criteria; group 2, those with extended host factors in 2020 EORTC criteria; and group 3, those without any risk factor mentioned in the criteria. IFD was defined by 2020 EORTC criteria, but BDG was not considered. Diagnostic performance of the serum BDG test was measured by the area under the curve (AUC) of the receiver-operating characteristic curve. Among 469 patients, 15.4% (72/469) were diagnosed with IFD (48/191 [25.1%], 14/144 [9.7%], and 10/134 [7.5%] in groups 1, 2, and 3, respectively). The BDG assay showed fair performance (AUC 0.748 [95% CI: 0.688-0.810]). Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), and negative predictive value (NPV) were 77.8%, 60.7%, 26.4%, and 93.8%, respectively. PPV was higher in group 1, and NPV was higher in group 3. Additionally, diagnostic odds ratios were 6.73, 2.88, and 5.92 in groups 1, 2, and 3. Immunosuppressant use, non-IFD/Candida colonization, and central venous catheter were associated with false positivity. The biosynthesis of cellulose, lignin, and hemicelluloses in plant secondary cell walls (SCWs) is regulated by a hierarchical transcriptional regulatory network. This network features orthologous transcription factors shared between poplar and Arabidopsis, highlighting a foundational similarity in their genetic regulation. However, knowledge on the discrepant behavior of the transcriptional-level molecular regulatory mechanisms between poplar and Arabidopsis remains limited. In this study, we investigated the function of PagMYB128 during wood formation and found it had broader impacts on SCW formation compared to its Arabidopsis ortholog, AtMYB103. Transgenic poplar trees overexpressing PagMYB128 exhibited significantly enhanced xylem development, with fiber cells and vessels displaying thicker walls, and an increase in the levels of cellulose, lignin, and hemicelluloses in the wood. In contrast, plants with dominant repression of PagMYB128 demonstrated the opposite phenotypes. RNA sequencing and reverse transcription - quantitative polymerase chain reaction showed that PagMYB128 could activate SCW biosynthetic gene expression, and chromatin immunoprecipitation along with yeast one-hybrid, and effector-reporter assays showed this regulation was direct. Further analysis revealed that PagSND1 (SECONDARY WALL-ASSOCIATED NAC-DOMAIN PROTEIN1) directly regulates PagMYB128 but not cell wall metabolic genes, highlighting the pivotal role of PagMYB128 in the SND1-driven regulatory network for wood development, thereby creating a feedforward loop in SCW biosynthesis., (© 2024 Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences.)

The present study investigated the transversal rotation of body and its relation to the horizontal movement for expert shooters and novices in a pistol aiming task. Participants stood on a force plate with an air pistol and aimed it to the centre of a target, positioned 1.4 m above the floor and 10 m away from the force plate, for 30 s as accurately as possible. The results revealed that the novice group showed greater transversal body variability represented by the free moment (FM) than the expert group. Correlation analysis showed that there is tight coupling between the FM and centre of pressure both in the anterior-posterior and medio-lateral directions for the expert group while only strong coupling of that in the anterior-posterior direction for the novice group. The findings suggest that FM is a critical factor to accurately aim the pistol on the target and there is a different postural strategy, in terms of the body motion in the transversal and horizontal space, as a function of skill level to realise success in the pistol aiming task.

Our primary purpose in this study was to determine whether trained dancers differed from untrained non-dancers in their ability to accurately control motor timing during finger and heel tapping tasks, both with and without slow isochronous auditory stimuli. Dancers and non-dancers were instructed to synchronize their taps with isochronous auditory stimuli under three conditions: 30, 40, and 50 BPM. After the synchronization phase, participants were asked to continue tapping without the auditory sequences. On the synchronization task, the tapping onset of both groups lagged behind the stimulus onset in all tempo conditions. In all conditions, dancers showed more accurate and stable beat synchronization and continuation than non-dancers. As the tempo condition slowed down (from 50 to 30 BPM), synchronization accuracy decreased while synchronization and continuation variability increased. Unlike for novices, dancers showed no difference between the finger and heel tapping synchronization tasks. During the continuous tasks, their timing accuracy was higher for heel than for finger tapping. Collectively, these findings suggest that dance training, which involves synchronizing bodily movements based on rhythm, may lead to an accumulation of experience that enhances specific sensorimotor skills related to synchronizing movements with external stimuli or continuing rhythmic movements temporally., Competing Interests: Declaration of Conflicting InterestsThe author(s) declared no potential conflicts of interest with respect to the research, authorship, and/or publication of this article.

Organisms use organic molecules called osmolytes to adapt to environmental conditions. In vitro studies indicate that osmolytes thermally stabilize proteins, but mechanisms are controversial, and systematic studies within the cellular milieu are lacking. We analyzed Escherichia coli and human protein thermal stabilization by osmolytes in situ and across the proteome. Using structural proteomics, we probed osmolyte effects on protein thermal stability, structure and aggregation, revealing common mechanisms but also osmolyte- and protein-specific effects. All tested osmolytes (trimethylamine N-oxide, betaine, glycerol, proline, trehalose and glucose) stabilized many proteins, predominantly via a preferential exclusion mechanism, and caused an upward shift in temperatures at which most proteins aggregated. Thermal profiling of the human proteome provided evidence for intrinsic disorder in situ but also identified potential structure in predicted disordered regions. Background: Age-dependent immune responses to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccinations and breakthrough infections (BIs) in young and middle-aged individuals are unclear., Methods: This nationwide multicenter prospective cohort study analyzed immune responses in participants of the ChAdOx1 (ChAd)-ChAd-mRNA vaccine group using cytometry by time-of-flight, anti-spike protein antibody (Sab) and anti-nucleocapsid antibody (Nab) titers, plaque reduction neutralization tests (PRNTs), and interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) release assays at various time points., Results: We evaluated 347 participants with an average age of 38.9 ± 9.4 years (range: 21-63). There was a significant inverse correlation between age and Sab levels after the second dose (slope - 14.96, P = 0.032), and this was more pronounced after the third dose (slope - 208.9, P < 0.001). After BIs, older participants showed significantly higher Sab titers (slope 398.8, P = 0.001), reversing the age-related decline observed post-vaccination. This reversal was also observed in PRNTs against wild-type SARS-CoV-2 and the BA.1 and BA.5 variants. IFN-γ responses increased markedly after the third dose and Bis, but showed a weak positive correlation with age, without statistical significance. Immune cell profiling revealed an age-dependent decrease in the proportions of B-cell lineage cells. The proportions of naive CD4 + and CD8 + T cells were inversely correlated with age, whereas the proportions of mature T cell subsets with memory function, including memory CD4 + T, CD8 + T EM , CD8 + T EMRA , and T FH cells, increased with age., Conclusions: Age-dependent waning of the serologic response to COVID-19 vaccines occurred even in middle-aged individuals, but was reversed after BIs. Objective: We aimed to examine the effectiveness and safety of a novel torque-controlled catheter for cerebral angiography., Methods: A total of 417 patients who underwent routine transfemoral cerebral angiography were enrolled in a randomized controlled study to compare the new torque-controlled and control group catheters. Device success was assessed on parameters such as the assessment of the common carotid artery, device rotation force, and success rate with the crossover group after the failed procedure. Four neurointerventionalists investigated the degree of satisfaction of using the new device. Superiority and non-inferiority tests of satisfaction scores were estimated for the new torque-controlled and the control group catheters., Results: The new torque-controlled catheter showed improved performance in terms of technical device success (92.79 vs. 98.09 %, P  = 0.010), crossover after technical device failure (0 vs. 86.67 %, P  = 0.004), and common carotid artery access (92.79 vs. 98.56 %, P  = 0.004). The flexibility and rotational force of the new torque-controlled catheter were higher than those of the control group catheters (75.48 vs. 100 %, P  < 0.001). No marked adverse cerebrovascular accidents or vessel damage occurred in either group during the procedure. The differences between the two groups in terms of the device rotational force and operator satisfaction were 1.836 (1.765-1.907) and 2.092 (2.000-2.183), respectively. Introduction: The long-term impact of initial immunogenicity induced by different primary COVID-19 vaccine series remains unclear., Methods: A prospective cohort study was conducted at 10 tertiary hospitals in Korea from March 2021 to September 2022. Immunogenicity assessments included anti-spike protein antibody (Sab), SARS-CoV-2-specific interferon-gamma releasing assay (IGRA), and multiplex cytokine assays for spike protein-stimulated plasma. Spike proteins derived from wild-type SARS-CoV-2 and alpha variant (Spike 1 ) and beta and gamma variant (Spike 2 ) were utilized., Results: A total of 235 healthcare workers who had received a two-dose primary vaccine series of either ChAdOx1 or BNT162b2, followed by a third booster dose of BNT162b2 (166 in the ChAdOx1/ChAdOx1/BNT162b2 (CCB) group and 69 in the BNT162b2/BNT162b2/BNT162b2 (BBB) group, based on the vaccine series) were included. Following the primary vaccine series, the BBB group exhibited significantly higher increases in Sab levels, IGRA responses, and multiple cytokines (CCL2/MCP-1, CCL3/MIP-1α, CCL4/MIP-1β, interleukin (IL)-1ra, IFN-γ, IL-2, IL-4, and IL-10) compared to the CCB group (all P < 0.05). One month after the third BNT162b2 booster, the CCB group showed Sab levels comparable to those of the BBB group, and both groups exhibited lower levels after six months without breakthrough infections (BIs). However, among those who experienced BA.1/2 BIs after the third booster, Sab levels increased significantly more in the BBB group than in the CCB group (P < 0.001). IGRA responses to both Spike 1 and Spike 2 proteins were significantly stronger in the BBB group than the CCB group after the third booster, while only the Spike 2 response were higher after BIs (P = 0.007). Among new vaccine technologies contributed to the control of the COVID-19 pandemic, ChAdOx1 nCoV-19, a chimpanzee adenovirus (ChAd)-vector vaccine expressing the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, could be administered globally owing to its low production cost and lack of a requirement for frozen storage. Despite its benefits, most recipients have reported immediate inflammatory reactions after the initial dose vaccination. We comprehensively examined the immune landscape following ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccination based on the single-cell transcriptomes of immune cells and epigenomic profiles of monocytes. Monocyte and innate-like activated T cell populations expressing interferon-stimulated genes (ISGs) increased 1 day post-vaccination with appearance of distinct subtype of ISG-activated cells, returning to baseline by day 14. Pre-treatment with oral corticosteroids effectively curtailed these ISG-associated inflammatory responses by decreasing chromatin accessibility of major ISGs, without hampering vaccine immunogenicity. Purpose: To investigate the toxicity of type I interferons (IFNs) on the ocular surface and assess their efficacy in ocular surface tumors., Methods: We examined the effects of IFN-α2a, IFN-α2b and IFN-β on corneal epithelial cells and stromal fibroblasts in vitro as well as the impact of IFN-α2a on the ocular surface in mice. Additionally, we analyzed the therapeutic and adverse effects of topically administered IFN-α2a and IFN-α2b in patients with ocular surface tumors. Risk factors contributing to side effects were explored., Results: IFN-α2a, IFN-α2b or IFN-β reduced cell viability and induced pro-inflammatory cytokines in corneal epithelial cells and stromal fibroblasts. Furthermore, IFNs enhanced the expression of major histocompatibility complex class II and CD40 in corneal epithelial cells. In mice, subconjunctival IFN-α2a injection did not induce corneal epithelial defects or opacity, nor did it reduce aqueous tears or conjunctival goblet cells. In patients, topical IFN-α2a or IFN-α2b administration decreased tumor size and prevented recurrence; however, it was associated with mild side effects, including corneal epitheliopathy and conjunctival hyperemia. These complications were associated with longer IFN use, the presence of underlying ocular surface disease and concurrent use of mitomycin C or anti-glaucoma eye drops., Conclusion: Although type I IFNs cause direct toxicity on corneal cells, they do not induce significant side effects on the healthy ocular surface. Considering its therapeutic and preventive effects, topical type I IFN is safe and effective for treating ocular surface tumors. Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the effects of subconjunctival injection of aflibercept, a soluble protein decoy for VEGFR-1 and VEGFR-2, on corneal angiogenesis and VEGFR-expressing CD11b + cells in a mouse model of suture-induced corneal neovascularization., Methods: Corneal neovascularization was induced in BALB/c mice by placing three sutures on the cornea. Immediately after surgery, either 200 µg aflibercept (5 µL) or an equal volume of phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) was administered into the subconjunctival space. Seven days after later, corneal new vessels were quantified through clinical examination and measurement of the CD31-stained area in corneal flat mounts. The levels of pro-angiogenic and inflammatory markers in the cornea were evaluated using RT-qPCR. The percentages of VEGFR-2 + CD11b + cells and VEGFR-3 + CD11b + cells were analyzed in the cornea, blood, and draining cervical lymph nodes (DLNs) using flow cytometry., Results: Subconjunctival injection of aflibercept significantly reduced the growth of corneal new vessels compared to subconjunctival PBS injection. The mRNA levels of Cd31, vascular growth factors (Vegfc and Angpt1), and pro-angiogenic/inflammatory markers (Tek/Tie2, Mrc1, Mrc2, and Il6) in the cornea were downregulated by subconjunctival aflibercept. Also, the percentage of VEGFR-3 + CD11b + cells in the cornea, blood, and DLNs was decreased by aflibercept, whereas that of VEGFR-2 + CD11b + cells was unaffected., Conclusion: Subconjunctival aflibercept administration inhibits inflammatory angiogenesis in the cornea and reduces the numbers of cornea-infiltrating and circulating VEGFR-3 + CD11b + cells., (© 2024. Background: We aimed to identify the risk factors for impaired cellular and humoral immunity after three doses of the SARS-CoV-2 vaccine. Methods: Six months after the third vaccine dose, T-cell immunity was evaluated using interferon-gamma release assays (IGRAs) in 60 healthy and 139 immunocompromised (IC) individuals, including patients with hematologic malignancy (HM), solid malignancy (SM), rheumatic disease (RD), and kidney transplantation (KT). Neutralizing antibody titers were measured using the plaque reduction neutralization test (PRNT) and surrogate virus neutralization test (sVNT). Results: T-cell immunity results showed that the percentages of IGRA-positive results using wild-type/alpha spike protein (SP) and beta/gamma SP were 85% (51/60) and 75% (45/60), respectively, in healthy individuals and 45.6% (62/136) and 40.4% (55/136), respectively, in IC individuals. IC with SM or KT showed a high percentage of IGRA-negative results. The underlying disease poses a risk for impaired cellular immune response to wild-type SP. The risk was low when all doses were administered as mRNA vaccines. The risk factors for an impaired cellular immune response to beta/gamma SP were underlying disease and monocyte%. In the sVNT using wild-type SP, 12 of 191 (6.3%) individuals tested negative. In the PRNT of 46 random samples, 6 (13%) individuals tested negative for the wild-type virus, and 19 (41.3%) tested negative with omicrons. KT poses a risk for an impaired humoral immune response. Conclusions: Underlying disease poses a risk for impaired cellular immune response after the third dose of the SARS-CoV-2 vaccine; KT poses a risk for impaired humoral immune response, emphasizing the requirement of precautions in patients.

Background: Although most impacted third molars (ITMs) are extracted in the teens and early 20s, some undergo extractions after their 40s. It is unclear whether the reasons for extraction, the degree of impaction, and complications differ in patients in an older age group compared with a younger age group., Purpose: The purpose of this study was to measure the association between age and 1) reason for extraction and 2) postoperative complications., Study Design, Setting, Sample: This was a retrospective cohort study of patients who had undergone surgical extraction of at least one mandibular ITM at a single institution. We excluded 1) age under 20 years, 2) follow-up period of less than 1 week, and 3) tooth extraction under general anesthesia., Predictor Variable: The primary predictor variable was age, classified into 3 groups (20s:20-29; 30s:30-39; over 40s: 40 and greater)., Main Outcome Variable(s): The primary outcome variables were the reason for extraction (prophylactic or symptomatic) and the presence of complications. The secondary outcome variable was type of complication (postoperative infection, dry socket, neurosensory disturbance, presenting pain over 1 month, retained root requiring secondary treatment)., Covariates: The covariates were sex, laterality of ITM, and difficulty of extraction as measured by the difficulty index, a measure based on depth, orientation, and ramus relationship/space available, with a higher score indicating greater difficulty., Analyses: χ 2 test was performed to analyze the association of categorical outcome variables and covariates. Level of statistical significance was set at P < .05., Results: Of a total of 831 eligible subjects, there were 555 (66.8%), 159 (19.1%), and 117 (14.1%) in the 20s, 30s, and over 40s age groups, respectively. The percentage of symptomatic extraction of ITM was significantly higher in the over-40 age group compared with the 20s group (92.3 vs 69.4%, (P < .001). Complication rate also significantly differed between over 40s group and the 20s group (7.7 vs 1.8%, P < .001). Difficulty index and indications for ITM extraction were significantly different between groups (P < .001)., Conclusion and Relevance: Symptoms, difficulty, and complications related to ITM increase at over 40 years of age. This study was carried out to assess the quality properties, components associated with taste and aroma of beef as a function of breed. For this purpose, steers from four Korean native cattle breeds: Hanwoo (n=10), Chikso (n=10), black Hanwoo (n=12, BHW) and Jeju black cattle (n=12, JBC) were used. The steers all were raised under identical conditions and finished at a similar age of around 30-months old. Following 24 h of slaughter, all longissimus lumborum muscles were collected and used for analysis of meat quality, fatty acids, and flavor-related components (metabolic compounds, free amino acids, and aroma volatiles). The Hanwoo presented a significantly higher intramuscular fat content (IMF, 22.85%) than the BHW (11.78%), Chikso (9.25%), and JBC (9.14%; p<0.05). The meat of Hanwoo breed showed lighter and redder color, and lower shear force value (p<0.05). The JBC presented a "healthier" fatty acid profiles as it had a higher total unsaturated fatty acids content (p<0.05). With regard to flavor-related components, Hanwoo also had higher total contents of free amino acids and metabolites associated with umami and sweet tastes, and fat-derived volatile compounds (aldehydes, alcohols, and ketones) associated with fatty aroma. It may be concluded that there was a considerable difference in the meat quality properties among breeds.
