A density wave (DW) is a fundamental type of long-range order in quantum matter tied to self-organization into a crystalline structure. The interplay of DW order with superfluidity can lead to complex scenarios that pose a great challenge to theoretical analysis. In the last decades, tunable quantum Fermi gases have served as model systems for exploring the physics of strongly interacting fermions, including most notably magnetic ordering, pairing and superfluidity, and the crossover from a Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superfluid to a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). Here, we realize a Fermi gas featuring both strong, tunable contact interactions and photon-mediated, spatially structured long-range interactions in a transversely driven high-finesse optical cavity. Above a critical long-range interaction strength DW order is stabilized in the system, which we identify via its superradiant light scattering properties. We quantitatively measure the variation of the onset of DW order as the contact interaction is varied across the BCS-BEC crossover, in qualitative agreement with a mean-field theory. The atomic DW susceptibility varies over an order of magnitude upon tuning the strength and the sign of the long-range interactions below the self-ordering threshold, demonstrating independent and simultaneous control over the contact and long-range interactions. We present an experimental system for Rydberg tweezer arrays with ytterbium (Yb) atoms featuring internal state manipulation between the ground ${}^1$S$_0$ and the metastable ${}^3$P$_2$ states, and single-photon excitation from the ${}^3$P$_2$ to Rydberg states. In the experiments, single Yb atoms are trapped in two-dimensional arrays of optical tweezers and are detected by fluorescence imaging with the intercombination ${}^1$S$_0 \leftrightarrow {}^3$P$_1$ transition, and the defect-free single atom arrays are prepared by the rearrangement with the feedaback. We successfully perform high-resolution ${}^1$S$_0\leftrightarrow {}^3$P$_2$ state spectroscopy for the single atoms, demonstrating the utilities of this ultranarrow transition. We further perform single-photon excitation from the ${}^3$P$_2$ to Rydberg states for the single atoms, which is a key for the efficient Rydberg excitation. We also perform a systematic measurement of a complex energy structure of a series of D states including newly observed ${}^3$D$_3$ states. We study a Fermi gas with strong, tunable interactions dispersively coupled to a high-finesse cavity. Upon probing the system along the cavity axis, we observe a strong optomechanical Kerr nonlinearity originating from the density response of the gas to the intracavity field and measure it as a function of interaction strength. We find that the zero-frequency density response function of the Fermi gas increases by a factor of two from the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer to the Bose-Einstein condensate regime. The results are in quantitative agreement with a theory based on operator-product expansion, expressing the density response in terms of universal functions of the interactions, the contact and the internal energy of the gas. This provides an example of a driven-dissipative, strongly correlated system with a strong nonlinear response, opening up perspectives for the sensing of weak perturbations or inducing long-range interactions in Fermi gases., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures

Cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) manipulates the coupling of light with matter, and allows for several emitters to couple coherently with one light mode. However, even in a many-body system, the light-matter coupling mechanism was so far restricted to one body processes. Leveraging cavity QED for the quantum simulation of complex, many-body systems has thus far relied on multi-photon processes, scaling down the light-matter interaction to the low energy and slow time scales of the many-body problem. Here we report on cavity QED experiments using molecular transitions in a strongly interacting Fermi gas, directly coupling cavity photons to pairs of atoms. The interplay of strong light-matter and strong inter-particle interactions leads to well resolved pair-polaritons, hybrid excitations coherently mixing photons, atom pairs and molecules. The dependence of the pair-polariton spectrum on interatomic interactions is universal, independent of the transition used, demonstrating a direct mapping between pair correlations in the ground state and the optical spectrum. This represents a magnification of many-body effects by two orders of magnitude in energy. In the dispersive regime, it enables fast, minimally destructive measurements of pair correlations, and opens the way towards their measurements at the quantum limit and their coherent manipulation using dynamical, quantized optical fields.

We report on the fast production and weakly destructive detection of a Fermi gas with tunable interactions in a high finesse cavity. The cavity is used both with far off-resonant light to create a deep optical dipole trap, and with near-resonant light to reach the strong light-matter coupling regime. The cavity-based dipole trap allows for an efficient capture of laser-cooled atoms, and the use of a lattice-cancellation scheme makes it possible to perform efficient intra-cavity evaporative cooling. After transfer in a crossed optical dipole trap, we produce deeply degenerate unitary Fermi gases with up to $7 \cdot 10^5$ atoms inside the cavity, with an overall $2.85$ s long sequence. The cavity is then probed with near-resonant light to perform five hundred-times repeated, dispersive measurements of the population of individual clouds, allowing for weakly destructive observations of slow atom-number variations over a single sample. Strong quantum correlations in matter are responsible for some of the most extraordinary properties of material, from magnetism to high-temperature superconductivity, but their integration in quantum devices requires a strong, coherent coupling with photons, which still represents a formidable technical challenge in solid state systems. In cavity quantum electrodynamics, quantum gases such as Bose-Einstein condensates or lattice gases have been strongly coupled with light. However, neither Fermionic quantum matter, comparable to electrons in solids, nor atomic systems with controlled interactions, have thus far been strongly coupled with photons. Here we report on the strong coupling of a quantum-degenerate unitary Fermi gas with light in a high finesse cavity. We map out the spectrum of the coupled system and observe well resolved dressed states, resulting from the strong coupling of cavity photons with each spin component of the gas. We investigate spin-balanced and spin-polarized gases and find quantitative agreement with ab-initio calculation describing light-matter interaction. Our system offers complete and simultaneous control of atom-atom and atom-photon interactions in the quantum degenerate regime, opening a wide range of perspectives for quantum simulation., Comment: Updated references

We report our experimental results on the collisional physics between non-S-state atoms (ytterbium (Yb), effectively a two-electron system, in the metastable ${}^3\mathrm{P}_2$ state) and S-state atoms (lithium (Li), an alkali metal, in the ground state). At low magnetic fields, by measuring inelastic interspecies collisional losses in the double quantum degenerate mixture we reveal the strong dependence of the inelastic losses on the internal spin states of both species and suppressed losses in stretched state configurations. Increasing the magnetic field up to 800 G we further investigate the magnetic field dependence of the collisional interactions. There, smoothly increasing inelastic losses are observed towards higher fields. The combined knowledge of both the magnetic field and the spin state dependence of the collisional losses of this prototypical mixture system of non-S-state and S-state atoms provides a significant step forward towards controllable impurity physics realized in the Yb-Li ultracold system., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

We present experimental results on the inelastic and elastic interspecies interactions between ytterbium (Yb) in the metastable ${}^3\mathrm{P}_2$ state loaded into a deep optical lattice and spin polarized lithium (Li) in its ground state. Focusing on the $m_J = 0$ magnetic sublevel of Yb(${}^3\mathrm{P}_2$), bias magnetic fields between 20 G and 800 G are investigated and significantly enhanced inelastic collision rates with high magnetic fields are found. In addition, by direct spectroscopy of the Yb Mott-insulator immersed in the Li Fermi gas an upper boundary of the background scattering length of the Yb(${}^3\mathrm{P}_2, m_J=0$)-Li(${}^2\mathrm{S}_{1/2}, F=1/2, m_F=+1/2$) system is estimated, revealing the absence of useful Feshbach resonances. Experimentally the spin dependence of inelastic collisions between ytterbium (Yb) in the metastable 3P0 state and lithium (Li) in the Li ground state manifold is investigated at low magnetic fields. Using selective excitation all magnetic sublevels mJ of 174Yb(3P0) are accessed and four of the six lowest lying magnetic sublevels of 6Li are prepared by optical pumping. On the one hand, mJ-independence of collisions involving Li(F=1/2) atoms is found. A systematic mJ-dependence in collisions with Li(F=3/2) atoms, in particular suppressed losses for stretched collisional states, is observed on the other hand. Further, mJ-changing processes are found to be of minor relevance. The span of observed inelastic collision rates is between 1*10^{-11} cm^3/s and 40*10^{-11} cm^3/s, and a possible origin of the observed behavior is discussed., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

We establish an experimental method for a detailed investigation of inelastic collisional properties between ytterbium (Yb) in the metastable ${}^3\mathrm{P}_2$ state and ground state lithium (Li). By combining an optical lattice and a direct excitation to the ${}^3\mathrm{P}_2$ state we achieve high selectivity on the collisional partners. Using this method we determine inelastic loss coefficients in collisions between $^{174}$Yb(${}^3\mathrm{P}_2$) with magnetic sublevels of $m_J=0$ and $-2$ and ground state $^6$Li to be $(4.4\pm0.3)\times10^{-11}~\mathrm{cm}^3/\mathrm{s}$ and $(4.7\pm0.8)\times10^{-11}~\mathrm{cm}^3/\mathrm{s}$, respectively. Absence of spin changing processes in Yb(${}^3\mathrm{P}_2$)-Li inelastic collisions at low magnetic fields is confirmed by inelastic loss measurements on the $m_J=0$ state. We develop an optical lattice system for an ultracold atomic gas mixture of ytterbium (174Yb) and lithium (6Li), which is an ideal system to study disorder and impurity problems. We load a Bose-Einstein condensate of 174Yb into a three-dimensional optical lattice and observe the interference patterns in time-of-flight (TOF) images. Furthermore, we perform a laser spectroscopy of 174Yb in an optical lattice using the ultra-narrow optical transition 1S0-3P2 in both cases with and without 6Li. Due to the weak interspecies interaction, we do not observe the clear influences of 6Li in the obtained interference patterns and the excitation spectra. However, this is an important first step of optical control of atomic impurity in ultracold fermions. We also measure the polarizabilities of the 3P2 state of 174Yb atoms in an optical trap with a wavelength of 1070 nm. We reveal that the polarizability can be tuned to positive, zero, or the same as the ground state, which are useful for certain applications., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures
