This study investigates the buildup of nine Potentially Toxic Elements (PTEs) in agricultural soils, sources of contamination, ecological risks index, and health risks. All samples from four subdistricts contained detectable levels of nine PTEs, with iron, copper, arsenic, cadmium, and lead concentrations surpassing permissible limits. Natural and anthropogenic activities are revealed as the sources of PTEs. The potential ecological risk index of PTEs is very high. The weekly intake of Pb, As, Ni, Mn, Cd, and Fe in children and adults surpassed the safe intake limits. The findings call for a comprehensive environmental protection plan to safeguard public health.

Storage of rice for a certain period of time can lead to decrease in the quality of rice, hence the purpose of this study was to determine the effect of storage method and duration on total sugar content, starch, and preference level of Inpari 43 GSR white rice and black rice Sembada Hitam varieties. The research was conducted at the Food Biochemical Chemistry Laboratory, Faculty of Agricultural Technology, Gajah Mada University The stage of this research is to cook the rice, and the storage time in two ways inside and outside the rice cooker is 0, 9, 18, and 27 hours, respectively. Then tested for sugar content, starch and level of preference. The increase in starch content increased at 9 hours of storage in Inpari 43 GSR and Sembada Hitam varieties and a decreased at 18 and 27 hours. Based on the test of preference for color, aroma, taste and texture, panelists preferred 9 hours of storage in the rice cooker both on rice Inpari 43 GSR and Sembada Hitam because more suitable for consumption.

Sorghum is an important food crop commodity in the midst of climate change conditions and the threat of a global food crisis. Sorghum, which has an adaptive advantage to all land conditions, is suitable for use as a food substitute for rice and wheat. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the economic value, farmers’ perceptions, and specific strategies for developing sorghum in Central Java and Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The research was conducted in Wonogiri Regency, Central Java, and Gunungkidul Regency, Yogyakarta from September to November 2022. The research was carried out through the observation of 120 respondents with indicators of farming characteristics and farmers’ perceptions of sorghum development, as well as focus group discussions (FGD) and depth interviews with indicators of internal and external factors for sorghum development. The analysis used is benefit cost (BC) to evaluate the economic value of sorghum farming, the Likert scale to determine farmers’ perceptions of sorghum, and Strength Weak Opportunity Threat (SWOT) to determine specific strategies for developing sorghum. The results showed that sorghum farming is feasible to develop in Wonogiri Central Java and Gunungkidul Yogyakarta because it provides a profit value greater than production costs with a BCR value of >1. The perception of farmers in Central Java regarding the development of sorghum is included in the very good category with an average value of 3.31, and the perception of farmers in Yogyakarta is included in the good category with an average value of 2.55. The operational policy strategy for developing sorghum in Wonogiri Central Java and Gunungkidul Yogyakarta is an expansion strategy (S-O).

Bacterial leaf blight (BLB) caused by Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo) is an important disease in rice plants worldwide, including in Indonesia. The use of resistant variety against BLB is the best effort in disease control because it is considered as the most effective and environmentally friendly. This study aimed to evaluate the resistance of local varieties, red rice (cv. Sembada Merah) and black rice (cv. Sembada Hitam), against Xoo compared to white rice variety (Ciherang), commonly cultivated by the farmers. The study was conducted in a greenhouse and arranged in Factorial of Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 5 replications and 2 treatment factors: variety (Sembada Hitam, Sembada Merah, and Ciherang) and inoculation (with and without inoculated by Xoo bacterial suspension). Xoo inoculation was performed by clipping the leaves that close to the reproductive phase when the heading begins to be produced. The disease intensity and Area Under Disease Progress Curve (AUDPC) over two weeks were used to determine the level of resistance of the tested plant varieties. The results showed that black rice and red rice had better levels of resistance against BLB compared to white rice. At two weeks after inoculation, Sembada Hitam had the lowest AUDPC value followed by Sembada Merah, while the Ciherang had the highest AUDPC value and was categorized as a susceptible variety to Xoo.

Rice production in the karst dryland is still low, due to soil characteristics that lack nutrient availability. Meanwhile, upland rice has received less attention, and it has not been used to its full potential. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of various combinations of inorganic fertilizers, poultry manure, and upland rice varieties on the production and economic value of karst dryland in Gunungkidul, Yogyakarta. This experiment was arranged in a factorial design, with inorganic fertilizers, poultry manure, and upland rice varieties set in a randomized block design with three replications. The first factor was a combination of inorganic and organic fertilizer rates: 72 N kg ha−1 + 26 P2O5 kg ha−1 + 25 K2O ha−1 + 3 t ha−1 organic, 92 N kg ha−1 + 36 P2O5 kg ha−1 + 30 K2O kg ha−1 + 2 t ha−1 organic, 112 N kg ha−1 + 46 P2O5 kg ha−1 + 35 K2O kg ha−1 + 1 t ha−1 organic. The second factor is the upland varieties of Inpago 8, Inpago 10, and Inpago 12 and lowland variety Inpari 42 Agritan GSR, as checked. Based on the study, we concluded that the combination of 92 N kg ha−1 + 36 P2O5 kg ha−1 + 30 K2O kg ha−1 + 2 t ha−1 poultry manure fertilizers with Inpago 8 resulted in an IDR profit of 23,586,000 ha−1, and it is the most recommendable fertilizer and variety combination to be developed in the karst dryland, in consideration of land fertility and sustainability.

This research studied the genetic parameters of the pigment characters of rice. The experiments were conducted in two stages: establishment of base population through crossing between black rice with white rice and F1s were grown in the green house and F2 seeds in the field. Analysis of the suitability of segregation ratio calculated with the chi squared formula and the degree of dominance could be seen from the comparison between the dominant predictive value [h] and the additive predictive value [d] were carried out with SAS 9.2 software. The results showed that the character of purple pigment was controlled by two mutually complementary dominant genes with recessive epistasis (9:3:4) which follow the model of additive×additive ([m][d][i] and dominant×dominant ([m][d][l]) interaction. The action of black/purple pigment gene of rice was perfect dominance which was directed to the parent with purple pericarp pigment (black rice).

The aim of this research was to know the heterozygosity of F2 generation from black rice and white rice crossing using microsatellite marker. The research material consisted of F2 Sx G plant population from black rice (S) and white rice Situbagendit (G) crosses, female parent of black rice (S), male parent of white rice (G), chemical and organic fertilizer, chemicals and tools for molecular activity and 3 microsatellite markers related to color properties (RM 220, RM 224 and RM 252). All of plant populations (generation F2, parent female, parent male) were planted in fields up to harvest. Young leaves (30 days after planting) all of plant populations were molecularly analyzed using 3 microsatellite markers (RM 220, RM 224 and RM 252). Stages of this activity include DNA isolation, PCR reaction, and visualization of PCR results using Metaphore Agarose Gel Electrophoresis. The results showed that the percentage of the number of individual plants showing heterozygous pattern in F2 S × G plant generation was 50% (RM 220); 40% (RM 224) and 60% (RM 252), so the RM 252 microsatellite marker was effectively used as a DNA-assisted selection tool on the crossbreed of black rice with white rice.

Banana is one of the tropical fruits that people like because it tastes good and contains good nutritional value that beneficial for health. The content of vitamin C and total sugar are an important character to complete the morphological characterization of banana accession that can be utilized by breeders in choosing accession as parent. The study aimed to determine the content of vitamin C and total sugar on 31 accessions of banana collection of Banana Germplasm Plants of Yogyakarta. The research was conducted at Banana Germplasm Plantation and Laboratory of Agricultural Technology Production of Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta from January to December 2016. The results indicated that 31 banana accessions showed their susceptibility to vitamin C content 60.42 + 39.22 mg / 100 g and total sugar 22.06 + 16.01%. High standard deviation values indicate the large diversity of banana accessions that were characterized, indicating that the accessions of each characterized banana were separate accessions of one another.

Black rice has a high anthocyanin content in the pericarp layer, which provides a dark purple color. Anthocyanin serve as an antioxidant that control cholesterol level in the blood, prevent anemia, potentially improve the body's resistance to disease, improve damage to liver cells (hepatitis and chirrosis), prevent impaired kidney function, prevent cancer/tumors, slows down antiaging, and prevent atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. Exploration results at AIAT Yogyakarta, Indonesia from 2011 to 2014 obtained 18 cultivar of local black rice Indonesia. The names of the rice are related to the color (black, red or purple) formed by anthocyanin deposits in the pericarp layer, seed coat or aleuron. The objective of the study was to classify several types of local black rice from explorations based on the total anthocyanin content. The study was conducted by clustering analyzing the total anthocyanin content of 18 local black rice cultivars in Indonesia. Cluster analysis of total anthocyanin content were done using SAS ver. 9.2. Clustering dendogram shows that there were 4 groups of black rice cultivars based on the total anthocyanin content. Group I consists of Melik black rice, Patalan black rice, Yunianto black rice, Muharjo black rice, Ngatijo black rice, short life of Tugiyo black rice, Andel hitam 1, Jlitheng, and Sragen black rice. Group II consists of Pari ireng, Magelang black hairy rice, Banjarnegara-Wonosobo black rice, and Banjarnegara black rice. Group III consists of NTT black rice, Magelang non hairy black rice, Sembada hitam, and longevity Tugiyo black rice. Group IV consist only one type of black rice namely Cempo ireng. The grouping result indicate the existence of duplicate names among the black rice namely Patalan with Yunianto black rice, and short life Tugiyo with Andel hitam 1 black rice.

Many studies report on the role of Phyllanthus niruri as an anti-inflammatory and there are variations in the results in every research, so a meta-analysis study is needed to obtain accurate results. This study aims to conduct a meta-analysis of the effect of Phyllanthus niruri as an anti-inflammatory. This study uses a meta-analysis research design with data collection from 12 databases. The screening process was carried out according to PRISMA, then analyzed using Comprehensive Meta-Analysis Version 3 (CMA3). Funnel plot and Egger's test were used as methods to measure publication bias. The articles used were 438 articles from various research journals. After going through screening, as many as 5 articles were eligible to be incorporated in the meta-analysis. Data were analyzed using a random effect model to calculate standardized means difference (SMD). The cytokines analyzed were TNF-a and IL-6 because both were discussed in at least 3 studies. Phyllanthus niruri affected the reduction of inflammatory cytokines with an effect size of SMD on TNF-a is -17,611 (95% CI -29,347, -5,875; p=0.003) and IL-6 is -3,263 (95% CI -5,403, -1,222; p = 0.003). The results of this meta-analysis strengthen the concept/theory that Phyllanthus niruri has the potential as an anti-inflammatory by reducing the inflammatory cytokines TNF-a and IL-6. AbstractThe research aims to investigate the Cadmium (Cd) contamination in rice fields within Sleman Regency due to its potential environmental and human health impact. The study was conducted from January to June 2023 and involved collecting soil samples from 23 irrigated rice fields within Sleman Regency with a grid sampling approach. Composite soil samples were created by blending five individual sub-samples from the cultivated layer (0-20 cm). The Cd levels in these samples were investigated using the Atomic Absorption Spectro-photometer (AAS) method. The findings revealed that all the sampled rice fields in Sleman Regency exceeded the critical limit of Cd concentration. The analysis of contamination factors (CF) and potential ecological risks (Er) indicated that the Cd contamination in Sleman Regency had reached a highly polluted level, carrying potential ecological risks. The extent of Cd contamination, primarily resulting from human activities (EF > 1), fell within the severe to extreme range (I-geo = 4-5). As a result, remediation measures are required to address the Cd contamination in Sleman Regency’s rice fields. These findings call for reducing the usage of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and fungicides. Many studies related to the therapeutic effect of black garlic (BG) have been carried out on cancer, diabetes, neurodegenerative, cardiovascular, dyslipidemia and other diseases. This investigation was conducted to examine the effect of BG supplements on the lipid profile and blood glucose of rats fed a customary diet (non-high fat diet). A fermented black garlic product was extracted by a maceration method and its phytochemical components were analyzed using LCMS. Black garlic extract was given to healthy rats with a normal feed for 14 days. Twenty-four rats were divided into 4 groups of 6 rats. As a control, group A was given aquadest (placebo), and groups B, C, and D were given BG extract at a dose of 15 mg/kg BW, 30 mg/kg BW, and 45 mg/kg BW, respectively. On day 15, blood was taken from the retro-orbital plexus of the rats to measure the total levels of cholesterol, High-Density Lipoprotein-Cholesterol (HDL-C), Triglyceride (TG), Low-Density Lipoprotein-Cholesterol (LDL-C) and glucose. Black garlic made by fermentation at 80oC for 8 days contained more monosaccharides, disaccharides and oligosaccharides than fresh garlic. Black garlic contained 32 types of organosulfur compounds, and the 5 most abundant compounds were allicin (5.813%), allin (4.993%), isoallin (3.77%), cycloalliin (3.163%) and (-) S-allyl-L-cysteine (2.022%). Black garlic extract administration was able to maintain blood glucose homeostasis in rats fed a normal diet (non-high fat diet). Levels of total cholesterol, triglyceride, and LDL-C were significantly decreased in groups administered black garlic compared to the control group, whilst the level of HDL-C increased significantly in groups administered black garlic compared to the control group. Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) is an essential food crop for more than 750 million people in tropical and sub-tropical dry climates of Africa, India, and Latin America. The domestic sorghum market in Indonesia is still limited to the eastern region (East Nusa Tenggara, West Nusa Tenggara, Java, and South Sulawesi). Therefore, it is crucial to carry out sorghum research on drylands. This research aimed to investigate the effect of sorghum genotype and planting distance and their interaction toward growth and sorghum’s productivity in the Gunungkidul dryland, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. In addition, the farm business analysis, including the feasibility of sorghum farming, was also examined. The research used a randomized complete block design (RCBD), arranged in a 5 × 4 factorial with 3 replicates. The first treatment consisted of 5 varieties (2 high-yielding varieties (Bioguma 1 and Kawali) and 3 local sorghum varieties (Plonco, Ketan Merah, and Hitam Wareng)). The second treatment consisted of 4 levels of planting distance, namely 50 × 20 cm, 60 × 20 cm, 70 × 15 cm, and 70 × 20 × 20 cm. Analysis of variance was used to analyze the data, where Duncan’s multiple range test (DMRT) was used post hoc. Plant height, panicle height, panicle width, panicle weight, stover weight, grains weight/plot, and productivity were significantly affected by sorghum varieties (p < 0.05). However, there was no significant effect from the planting distance treatment and no interaction between planting distance and varietal treatments. Ketan Merah had the highest height, panicle length, and panicle width, while Bioguma 1 had the highest stover weight, panicle weight, grain weight/plot, and productivity. There was a significant linear regression equation, i.e., productivity = 0.0054– 0.0003 panicle height + 0.4163 grains weight/plot. Our findings on farm business analysis suggested that four out of five tested sorghum varieties were feasible to grow, except for the Ketan Merah variety. The serious problems of sandy soils for crop development are low water-holding capacity, nutrient retention, and low content of all nutrients. The objective of the study was to increase the nutrient content of sandy soil and evaluate nutrient types that mostly affect the high shallot yield with reasonable economic values. The field experiment was conducted on the upland sandy loam soil. Six treatments consisting of complete nutrients, N-, P-, K-, Mg- and S-omission tests were arranged in a randomly completed block design with four replicates. The observed parameters included soil physicochemical properties, tissue nutrient content, growth, yield, and input-output of shallot cultivation. The results showed that N, P, K, Mg and S application successfully increased shallot bulb, achieving 11.43 t ha−1 on sandy soil. The order of shallot tissue content was K > N > P~Mg > S, where the S, P, N, and Mg are limiting factors, as revealed by significantly lower relative yield (varying from 79 to 88%). The highest weight loss during storage occurred for S-omission treatment (40 to 60%), indicating insufficient S tissue is the most responsible for the quality of shallot. The complete nutrient treatment gave the highest income (7446.09 USD ha−1) with a revenue cost ratio of 2.41 compared to other treatments. The effectiveness of heavy metal-tolerant microorganisms for supporting plant growth needs to be understood before it can be used as a soil bioremediation agent. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of heavy metal tolerant microorganisms on the growth of "Narra" seedling (Pterocarpus indicus Wild). Three heavy metals-resistant (Pb, Cd, and Cu) rhizobacteria from a copper (Cu) mined-out site in Marinduque, Philippines showed plant growth promotion in vitro. A treatment combination of formula inoculant A (CuNFbM 4.1, MGR 333), B (CuNFbM 4.1, MGR 333, PbSM 2.1), and O (Uninoculated); compost (0%, 4%); and lime + inorganic fertilizer {without or with lime and inorganic fertilizer (LF0; LF1)} were applied to Narra seedlings planted on 445 mg/kg Cu-contaminated soil. Lime (2 mg/ha) and the recommended dose of soybean inorganic fertilizer were used as positive controls to evaluate the ability of inoculations and composts to promote the growth and used as positive controls to evaluate the ability of inoculants and composts to promote the growth and copper accumulation of narra in greenhouse experiments. All treatment combinations resulted in significant differences in plant height, leaf number, stem diameter, shoot and root dry weight, as well as, shoot, root Cu content, and plant Cu uptake of 13-week-old "Narra". Inoculated "Narra" could thrive better in mine-degraded soil containing 445 ppm Cu with 4% compost. Inoculant B demonstrated the best plant performance while Pseudomonas synxantha (PbSM 2.1) probably increases the plant's growth due to 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate (ACC) deaminase it produces. Accumulation of Cu was higher in the root compared other plant parts. More research is necessary to elucidate the mechanism of plant growth promotion and heavy metal re mediation by P. synxantha. The problem of rice farming in Indonesia is the increasing extent of nutrient-poor land due to the lack of addition of organic matter and continuously inundated irrigated rice fields, causing the production of greenhouse gas emissions, such as methane gas (CH4), to increase. The study aims to determine the impact of organic fertilizers and rice varieties on rice yield, methane emissions, and the feasibility of farming in nutrient-poor rice fields. The study used a randomized block design in factorial with four replicates. The first factor is the type of organic fertilizers (compost of rice straw and goat manure), and the second factor is the variety of rice (Ciherang, Inpari 20, and Inpari 30). The results showed that the productivity of Inpari 20 (8.02 t·ha−1) was significantly higher than that of Inpari 30 (6.10 t·ha−1) and Ciherang (6.91 t·ha−1). The highest yields of Harvest Dry Grain (HDG) to Milled Dry Grain (MDG) were the Inpari 20 (88.23%), Inpari 30 (86.94%), and Ciherang (85.04%). Methane (CH4) emissions were highest in the Ciherang variety (56.4 kg h−1 season−1), followed by Inpari 30 (40.8 kg h−1 season−1), and lowest in Inpari 20 (22.3 kg h−1 season−1). Compared to Inpari 30 and Ciherang varieties, the Inpari 20 variety with rice straw compost has broad development viability in nutrient-poor paddy fields (highest R/C ratio and break-even point).
