A study confirms the advantage of high extinction coefficient sensitizers in realizing efficient thin film solar cells. Two novel heretoteptic synthesizers coded as K-19 and K-73 are synthesized and characterized by (super 1)H NMR, FTIR, UV-vis absorption and emission spectroscopy and excited-state lifetime and spectroelectrochemical measurements.

Abstract

Three novel triphenylamine-based D-A-π-A-featured dyes (Z1–Z3) have been designed, synthesized and characterized for use in dye-sensitized solar cells. Benzothiazole was incorporated as an additional acceptor, which greatly enhanced the molar extinction coefficient of the dyes. Various conjugated linkers, such as benzene, furan and thiophene, were also introduced to configure the novel D-A-π-A framework in order to prolong electron flow and active transportation. Among all dyes, Z2 containing a thiophene linker exhibited the maximum overall conversion efficiency (η) of 4.16% (J sc = 9.27 mA cm−2, V oc = 642 mV, FF = 0.70) under standard global AM 1.5 G solar condition.

Abstract

Nitrile- and vinyl-functionalized imidazolium salts (ionic liquids) are evaluated as electrolyte in ruthenium dye-sensitized solar cells, either neat or as solutions with other ionic and neutral solvent. Good efficiencies together with excellent stabilities are obtained, indicating the potential of such functionalized systems in the design of solvent-free electrolyte for solar cells.

Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was performed to investigate the interface variation in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSC) in order to probe the photovoltaic parameter variations during the aging processes of DSC. Contrary to conventional silicon solar cells, DSC device performances were only negligibly influenced when increasing the operational temperature from ambient to 60 degree C.

Abstract

TiO 2nanotube arrays prepared by electrochemical anodization of Ti foils show impressive light to electricity conversion efficiency in the dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). The length of the TiO 2nanotube arrays (5−14 µm) was controlled by varying the anodization time from 2 to 20 h. The influence of nanotube lengths on the photovoltaic performance of DSCs was investigated by impedance. A flexible DSC using TiO 2nanotube arrays on a Ti foil as a working electrode and polyethylene naphthalate (ITO/PEN) as counterelectrode in combination with solvent-free ionic liquid electrolyte achieved 3.6% photovoltaic conversion efficiency under simulated AM 1.5 sunlight.

Abstract

Dye-sensitized solar cells have been fabricated with different kinds of TiO2films including SiO2coated and bare TiO2microparticles as light-scattering layer (LSL). Results show that the LSL barely affects the cell's dark current, whereas under illumination, it made a significant contribution to the total photocurrent. Photo-voltage decay measurements performed under bias illumination show the density of electronic states (DOS) of the LSL to be two times smaller than that of a transparent nanoparticle layer (TNL). Strikingly, DSCs fabricated from a 4.5μm thick LSL alone showed a conversion efficiency of 5% despite of being pale pink in color. This impressive performance is attributed to light containment in the LSL and a low density of defect electronic states.

Abstract

Ionic liquids are a new class of organic solvents with high polarity and a preorganized solvent structure. Very polar reactions can be carried out in these liquid in the absence of or with a controlled amount of water, and crystalline nanoparticles can be synthesized conveniently at ambient temperatures. The pronounced self-organization of the solvent is used in the synthesis of self-assembled, highly organized hybrid nanostructures with unparalleled quality. The extraordinary potential of ionic liquids in materials synthesis is described in this minireview and a physicochemical explanation is given.

Abstract

Solar energy is a promising solution to global energy-related problems because it is clean, inexhaustible and readily available. However, the deployment of conventional photovoltaic cells based on silicon is still limited by cost, so alternative, more cost-effective approaches are sought. Here we report a bifacial dye-sensitized solar cell structure that provides high photo-energy conversion efficiency (similar to 6%) for incident light striking its front or rear surfaces. The design comprises a highly stable ruthenium dye ( Z907Na) in combination with an ionic-liquid electrolyte and a porous TiO2 layer. The inclusion of a SiO2 layer between the electrodes to prevent generation of unwanted back current and optimization of the thickness of the TiO2 layer are responsible for the enhanced performance.
