Abstract

Substantial experimental and theoretical efforts worldwide are devoted to explore the phase diagram of strongly interacting matter. At LHC and top RHIC energies, QCD matter is studied at very high temperatures and nearly vanishing net-baryon densities. There is evidence that a Quark-Gluon-Plasma (QGP) was created at experiments at RHIC and LHC. The transition from the QGP back to the hadron gas is found to be a smooth cross over. For larger net-baryon densities and lower temperatures, it is expected that the QCD phase diagram exhibits a rich structure, such as a first-order phase transition between hadronic and partonic matter which terminates in a critical point, or exotic phases like quarkyonic matter. The discovery of these landmarks would be a breakthrough in our understanding of the strong interaction and is therefore in the focus of various high-energy heavy-ion research programs. The Compressed Baryonic Matter (CBM) experiment at FAIR will play a unique role in the exploration of the QCD phase diagram in the region of high net-baryon densities, because it is designed to run at unprecedented interaction rates. High-rate operation is the key prerequisite for high-precision measurements of multi-differential observables and of rare diagnostic probes which are sensitive to the dense phase of the nuclear fireball. The goal of the CBM experiment at SIS100 (sqrt(s_NN) = 2.7 - 4.9 GeV) is to discover fundamental properties of QCD matter: the phase structure at large baryon-chemical potentials (mu_B > 500 MeV), effects of chiral symmetry, and the equation-of-state at high density as it is expected to occur in the core of neutron stars. The main goal was to investigate whether the indium thin oxide (ITO) layer can serve as an effective optical confinement improving operation of these devices. Simulations were performed with the aid of a self-consistent thermal-electrical-optical model. Results obtained for green- and blue-emitting lasers were compared. Abstract

We propose a new in vitro model to assess the impact of 90 Y-microspheres derived low-dose beta radiation on colorectal cancer cell line under various oxygenation conditions that mimic the tumor environment. Cancer cells (HCT116) proliferation was assessed using Alamar Blue (AB) assay after 48, 72, and 96 h. FLUKA code assessed changes in cancer cell populations relative to the absorbed dose. In normoxia, mitochondrial activity measured by Alamar Blue after 48-72 h was significantly correlated with the number of microspheres (48 h: r = 0.87 and 72 h: r = 0.89, p < 0.05) and absorbed dose (48 h: r = 0.87 and 72 h: r = 0.7, p < 0.05). In hypoxia, the coefficients were r = 0.43 for both the number of spheres and absorbed dose and r = 0.45, r = 0.47, respectively. Impediment of cancer cell proliferation depended on the absorbed dose. Doses below 70 Gy could reduce colorectal cancer cell proliferation in vitro. Hypoxia induced a higher resistance to radiation than that observed under normoxic conditions. Hypoxia and radiation induced senescence in cultured cells. The new in vitro model is useful for the assessment of 90 Y radioembolization effects at the micro-scale.

32. Numerical Investigation of the Impact of ITO, AlInN, Plasmonic GaN and Top Gold Metalization on Semipolar Green EELs.

Abstract

In this paper, we present the results of a computational analysis of continuous-wave (CW) room-temperature (RT) semipolar InGaN/GaN edge-emitting lasers (EELs) operating in the green spectral region. In our calculations, we focused on the most promising materials and design solutions for the cladding layers, in terms of enhancing optical mode confinement. The structural modifications included optimization of top gold metalization, partial replacement of p-type GaN cladding layers with ITO and introducing low refractive index lattice-matched AlInN or plasmonic GaN regions. Based on our numerical findings, we show that by employing new material modifications to green EELs operating at around 540 nm it is possible to decrease their CW RT threshold current densities from over 11 kA/cm 2 to less than 7 kA/cm 2 .

Abstract

Purpose: Thoracic aortic aneurysm (TAA) is a cardiovascular disease characterized by increased aortic diameter, treated with surgery and endovascular therapy in order to avoid aortic dissection or rupture. The mechanism of TAA formation has not been thoroughly studied and many factors have been proposed to drive its progression; however strong focus is attributed to modification of smooth muscle cells (SMCs). Latest research indicates, that microRNAs (miRNAs) may play a significant role in TAA development - these are multifunctional molecules consisting of 19-24 nucleotides involved in regulation of the gene expression level related to many biological processes, i.e. cardiovascular disease pathophysiology, immunity or inflammation., Materials and Methods: Primary SMCs were isolated from aortic scraps of TAA patients and age- and sex-matched healthy controls. Purity of isolated SMCs was determined by flow cytometry using specific markers: α-SMA, CALP, MHC and VIM. Real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was conducted for miRNA analysis., Results: We established an isolation protocol and investigated the miRNA expression level in SMCs isolated from aneurysmal and non-aneurysmal aortic samples. We identified that let-7 g (0.71-fold, p = 0.01), miR-130a (0.40-fold, p = 0.04), and miR-221 (0.49-fold, p = 0.05) significantly differed between TAA patients and healthy controls., Conclusions: Further studies are required to improve our understanding of the pathophysiology underlying TAA, which may aid the development of novel, targeted therapies. Abstract

Microtubule-targeting agents (MTA) have been investigated for many years as payloads for antibody-drug conjugates (ADC). In many cases, these ADCs have shown limited benefits due to lack of efficacy or significant toxicity, which has spurred continued investigation into novel MTA payloads for next-generation ADCs. In this study, we have developed ADCs using the MTA eribulin, a derivative of the macrocyclic polyether natural product halichondrin B, as a payload. Eribulin ADCs demonstrated in vitro potency and specificity using various linkers and two different conjugation approaches. MORAb-202 is an investigational agent that consists of the humanized anti-human folate receptor alpha (FRA) antibody farletuzumab conjugated via reduced interchain disulfide bonds to maleimido-PEG 2 -valine-citrulline- p -aminobenzylcarbamyl-eribulin at a drug-to-antibody ratio of 4.0. MORAb-202 displayed preferable biophysical properties and broad potency across a number of FRA-positive tumor cell lines as well as demonstrated improved specificity in vitro compared with farletuzumab conjugated with a number of other MTA payloads, including MMAE, MMAF, and the reducible maytansine linker-payload sulfo-SPDB-DM4. A single-dose administration of MORAb-202 in FRA-positive human tumor cell line xenograft and patient-derived tumor xenograft models elicited a robust and durable antitumor response. 35. Demographic and traditional knowledge perspectives on the current status of Canadian polar bear subpopulations.

Abstract

Subpopulation growth rates and the probability of decline at current harvest levels were determined for 13 subpopulations of polar bears (Ursus maritimus) that are within or shared with Canada based on mark-recapture estimates of population numbers and vital rates, and harvest statistics using population viability analyses (PVA). Aboriginal traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) on subpopulation trend agreed with the seven stable/increasing results and one of the declining results, but disagreed with PVA status of five other declining subpopulations. The decline in the Baffin Bay subpopulation appeared to be due to over-reporting of harvested numbers from outside Canada. The remaining four disputed subpopulations (Southern Beaufort Sea, Northern Beaufort Sea, Southern Hudson Bay, and Western Hudson Bay) were all incompletely mark-recapture (M-R) sampled, which may have biased their survival and subpopulation estimates. Three of the four incompletely sampled subpopulations were PVA identified as nonviable (i.e., declining even with zero harvest mortality). TEK disagreement was nonrandom with respect to M-R sampling protocols. Cluster analysis also grouped subpopulations with ambiguous demographic and harvest rate estimates separately from those with apparently reliable demographic estimates based on PVA probability of decline and unharvested subpopulation growth rate criteria. We suggest that the correspondence between TEK and scientific results can be used to improve the reliability of information on natural systems and thus improve resource management. Considering both TEK and scientific information, we suggest that the current status of Canadian polar bear subpopulations in 2013 was 12 stable/increasing and one declining (Kane Basin). We do not find support for the perspective that polar bears within or shared with Canada are currently in any sort of climate crisis. We suggest that monitoring the impacts of climate change (including sea ice decline) on polar bear subpopulations should be continued and enhanced and that adaptive management practices are warranted.

Abstract

The authors present the material of 520 patients with cancer of the larynx operated during 1969-1998. Most of them (60%) have had III-th and IV-th degree advanced cancer. 399 (77%) patients have had the combined treatment--laryngectomy and X-ray or Co-therapy. The 5 years survival rate of 341 patients treated during 1969-93 is presented. 5-year cures after surgery occurred in 188 patients (55%).

Abstract

The results of experimental tests performed upon 16 human stapes taken from cadavers were presented. The aim of the experiment was to define optimal parameters of laser stapedotomy. The less harmful range of argon laser energy for making the hole 0.6 mm diameter in the stape footplate was determined. There were two zones of tissue damage around the footplate's hole seen in scanning microscope. The internal area was made of carbonized tissue. The osseous tissue of the external zone had cavernous-cystic structure and lamellar stratification.

Abstract

Five cases of malignant paranasal sinus and nasopharyngeal cancer were demonstrated. They illustrated the discrepancies in the evaluation of the extensive neoplastic process using CT scanning and intraoperative examination. The limitation of CT scanning in the diagnosis of advanced malignant cancer in this region was discussed.
