Accurately diagnosing sleep disorders is essential for clinical assessments and treatments. Polysomnography (PSG) has long been used for detection of various sleep disorders. In this research, electrocardiography (ECG) and electromayography (EMG) have been used for recognition of breathing and movement-related sleep disorders. Bio-signal processing has been performed by extracting EMG features exploiting entropy and statistical moments, in addition to developing an iterative pulse peak detection algorithm using synchrosqueezed wavelet transform (SSWT) for reliable extraction of heart rate and breathing-related features from ECG. A deep learning framework has been designed to incorporate EMG and ECG features. The framework has been used to classify four groups: healthy subjects, patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), patients with restless leg syndrome (RLS) and patients with both OSA and RLS. The proposed deep learning framework produced a mean accuracy of 72% and weighted F1 score of 0.57 across subjects for our formulated four-class problem., Comment: Paper is offered by the publisher as Open Acess: https://www.mdpi.com/1424-8220/20/9/2594

- Abstract
A longitudinal science intervention with students from ethnic-racial underrepresented groups in an urban area examined the roles of intervention participation and STEM relationships in implicit and explicit science identity and attitudes and social belonging. Across a four-week geoscience program, Black, Latinx, and Native American/Alaskan Native (87.5%) students (N = 97; M[subscript age] = 15.27; female = 44%) from low socio-economic backgrounds engaged in hands-on activities, field trips, group projects, and listened to diverse speakers. During the intervention, students had the opportunity to form relationships with teachers and near-peer mentors (undergraduate STEM students). Participants exhibited increases in positive explicit and implicit science attitudes, identity, and social belonging. Also, psychosocial support from teachers and near-peer mentors developed over time, but near-peer mentorship uniquely explained changes in science identity and social belonging. Positive changes in implicit and explicit attitudes and explicit science identity were further qualified by past academic performance--only low, compared to high, achieving students benefited the most from the intervention. The present intervention provides evidence that immersing ethnic-racial minority high school students in an engaging science program with supportive STEM relationships promotes science-based cognitions that have implications for persistence in STEM.

Just recently, the class of all Einstein-Maxwell fields solving simultaneously also any higher-order modification of the Eintein-Maxwell theory has been completely identified. In the present work, we argue that, in view of our recent results on nonabelian gauge fields, analogous identification can be in fact achieved for Einstein-Yang-Mills fields associated with any compact and semisimple gauge group. In particular, any such solution consists of a $VSI$ (vanishing scalar invariant) spacetime metric and a $VSI$ gauge field, both subject to a simple tensorial condition. Based on that, we are able to provide explicit form of all such solutions and interpret them as gravitational and Yang-Mills plane-fronted waves propagating in flat spacetime along the common recurrent wave vector. The results have consequences also for theories with a richer field content, which is further illustrated on 10D heterotic supergravity., Comment: 6 pages, 0 figures

We consider extension of some established techniques of study of tensor fields on Lorentzian manifolds of arbitrary dimension to non-Abelian gauge covariant fields. These are then applied to study of gauge fields with vanishing scalar curvature invariants and universal Yang-Mills fields, for which all possible higher-order corrections to the Yang-Mills equation identically vanish.

We obtain a full characterization of Einstein-Maxwell $p$-form solutions $(\boldsymbol{g},\boldsymbol{F})$ in $D$-dimensions for which all higher-order corrections vanish identically. These thus simultaneously solve a large class of Lagrangian theories including both modified gravities and (possibly non-minimally coupled) modified electrodynamics. Specifically, both $\boldsymbol{g}$ and $\boldsymbol{F}$ are fields with vanishing scalar invariants and further satisfy two simple tensorial conditions. They describe a family of gravitational and electromagnetic plane-fronted waves of the Kundt class and of Weyl type III (or more special). The local form of $(\boldsymbol{g},\boldsymbol{F})$ and a few examples are also provided., Comment: v2: a few minor changes in the text and proof of lemma B.6 slightly improved, results unchanged

We study almost universal spacetimes - spacetimes for which the field equations of any generalized gravity with the Lagrangian constructed from the metric, the Riemann tensor and its covariant derivatives of arbitrary order reduce to one single differential equation and one algebraic condition for the Ricci scalar. We prove that all d-dimensional Kundt spacetimes of Weyl type III and traceless Ricci type N are almost universal. Explicit examples of Weyl type II almost universal Kundt metrics are also given. The considerable simplification of the field equations of higher-order gravity theories for almost universal spacetimes is then employed to study new Weyl type II, III, and N vacuum solutions to quadratic gravity in arbitrary dimension and six-dimensional conformal gravity. Necessary conditions for almost universal metrics are also studied., Comment: 17 pages, final version, to appear in Phys. Rev. D

General Relativity and Quantum Cosmology - Abstract
We consider $d$-dimensional solutions to the electrovacuum Einstein-Maxwell equations with the Weyl tensor of type N and a null Maxwell $(p+1)$-form field. We prove that such spacetimes are necessarily aligned, i.e. the Weyl tensor of the corresponding spacetime and the electromagnetic field share the same \textit{aligned null direction} (AND). Moreover, this AND is geodetic, shear-free, non-expanding and non-twisting and hence Einstein-Maxwell equations imply that Weyl type N spacetimes with a null Maxwell $(p+1)$-form field belong to the Kundt class. Moreover, these Kundt spacetimes are necessarily $CSI$ and the $(p+1)$ form is $VSI$. Finally, a general coordinate form of solutions and a reduction of the field equations are discussed., Comment: 11 pages, minor changes

Sarcoidosis is a systemic granulomatous disease of unknown cause. Its clinical presentations are heterogeneous and virtually any organ system can be affected, most commonly lungs. The manifestations of cardiac sarcoidosis (CS) are heterogenous depending on the extent and location of the disease and range from asymptomatic forms to life-threatening arrhythmias as well as to progressive heart failure. Cardiac involvement is associated with a worse prognosis. The diagnosis of CS is often challenging and requires a multimodality approach based on current international recommendations. Pharmacological treatment of CS is based on administration of anti-inflammatory therapy (mainly corticosteroids), which is often combined with heart failure medication and/or antiarrhythmics. Nonpharmacological therapeutic approaches in CS cover pacemaker or defibrillator implantation, catheter ablations and heart transplantation. This review aims to summarize the current understanding of CS including its epidemiology, etiopathogenesis, clinical presentations, diagnostic approaches, and therapeutic possibilities.

General Relativity and Quantum Cosmology - Abstract
We study the geometrical properties of null congruences generated by an aligned null direction of the Weyl tensor (WAND) in spacetimes of the Weyl and Ricci type N (possibly with a non-vanishing cosmological constant) in an arbitrary dimension. We prove that a type N Ricci tensor and a type III or N Weyl tensor have to be aligned. In such spacetimes, the multiple WAND has to be geodetic. For spacetimes with type N aligned Weyl and Ricci tensors, the canonical form of the optical matrix in the twisting and non-twisting case is derived and the dependence of the Weyl and the Ricci tensors and Ricci rotation coefficients on the affine parameter of the geodetic null congruence generated by the WAND is obtained., Comment: 16 pages, section 6 added, section 7 reduced, tables 1 and 3 added, other minor changes

Increasing academic participation among students from ethnic-racial underrepresented groups in STEM yields societal benefits including ameliorating economic ramifications of the labor shortages in STEM, improving scientific innovation, and providing opportunity, access, and participation in high-status STEM fields. Two longitudinal studies with students from underrepresented groups investigated the role of active learning interventions in the development of STEM self-efficacy and intentions to pursue STEM in the future. Study 1 longitudinally tracked high school students participating in a 4-week geoscience program that applied active learning techniques ranging from hands on experiments to peer discussion. High school student participants displayed increases in self-efficacy and STEM intentions from the start to completion of the program, an effect that was observed exclusively among those who reported strong program quality. Study 2 examined the role of mentorship effectiveness with a sample of community college STEM students interested in transferring to a 4-year college. Students’ relatively strong self-efficacy and STEM intentions at the start of the semester remained stable through the end of the semester. Altogether, the present research highlights the role of positive, inclusive educational climates in promoting STEM success among students from underrepresented group members.

Compared to the previous INPOP versions, the INPOP10a planetary and lunar ephemeris has several improvements. For the planets of our solar system, no big change was brought in the dynamics but improvements were implemented in the fitting process, the data sets used in the fit and in the selection of fitted parameters. We report here the main characteristics of the planetary part of INPOP10a like the fit of the product of the Solar mass with the gravitational constant (GM$_{\odot}$) instead of the astronomical unit. Determinations of PPN parameters as well as adjustments of the Sun J2 and of asteroid masses are also presented. New advances of nodes and perihelia of planets were also estimated and are given here. As for INPOP08, INPOP10a provides to the user, positions and velocities of the planets, the moon, the rotation angles of the Earth and the Moon as well as TT-TDB chebychev polynomials at http://www.imcce.fr/inpop, Comment: accepted for publication in celestial mechanics and dynamical astronomy

Astrophysics - Solar and Stellar Astrophysics ,Astrophysics - Earth and Planetary Astrophysics - Abstract
Context. Ceres is the most massive body of the asteroid belt and contains about 25 wt.% (weight percent) of water. Understanding its thermal evolution and assessing its current state are major goals of the Dawn Mission. Constraints on internal structure can be inferred from various observations. Especially, detailed knowledge of the rotational motion can help constrain the mass distribution inside the body, which in turn can lead to information on its geophysical history. Aims. We investigate the signature of the interior on the rotational motion of Ceres and discuss possible future measurements performed by the spacecraft Dawn that will help to constrain Ceres' internal structure. Methods. We compute the polar motion, precession-nutation, and length-of-day variations. We estimate the amplitudes of the rigid and non-rigid response for these various motions for models of Ceres interior constrained by recent shape data and surface properties. Results. As a general result, the amplitudes of oscillations in the rotation appear to be small, and their determination from spaceborne techniques will be challenging. For example, the amplitudes of the semi-annual and annual nutations are around ~364 and ~140 milli-arcseconds, and they show little variation within the parametric space of interior models envisioned for Ceres. This, combined with the very long-period of the precession motion, requires very precise measurements. We also estimate the timescale for Ceres' orientation to relax to a generalized Cassini State, and we find that the tidal dissipation within that object was probably too small to drive any significant damping of its obliquity since formation. However, combining the shape and gravity observations by Dawn offers the prospect to identify departures of non-hydrostaticity at the global and regional scale, which will be instrumental in constraining Ceres' past and current thermal state. We also discuss the existence of a possible Chandler mode in the rotational motion of Ceres, whose potential excitation by endogenic and/or exogenic processes may help detect the presence of liquid reservoirs within the asteroid., Comment: submitted to Astronomy and Astrophysics

Astrophysics - Earth and Planetary Astrophysics - Abstract
We assess the ability of a solid ring to model a global perturbation induced by several thousands of main-belt asteroids. The ring is first studied in an analytical framework that provides an estimate of all the ring's parameters excepting mass. In the second part, numerically estimated perturbations on the Earth-Mars, Earth-Venus, and Earth-Mercury distances induced by various subsets of the main-belt population are compared with perturbations induced by a ring. To account for large uncertainties in the asteroid masses, we obtain results from Monte Carlo experiments based on asteroid masses randomly generated according to available data and the statistical asteroid model. The radius of the ring is analytically estimated at 2.8 AU. A systematic comparison of the ring with subsets of the main belt shows that, after removing the 300 most perturbing asteroids, the total main-belt perturbation of the Earth-Mars distance reaches on average 246 m on the 1969-2010 time interval. A ring with appropriate mass is able to reduce this effect to 38 m. We show that, by removing from the main belt ~240 asteroids that are not necessarily the most perturbing ones, the corresponding total perturbation reaches on average 472 m, but the ring is able to reduce it down to a few meters, thus accounting for more than 99% of the total effect., Comment: 18 pages, accepted in A&A

Astrophysics - Earth and Planetary Astrophysics - Abstract
In this Letter, we give new constraints on planet migration. They were obtained under the assumption that Saturn's current obliquity is due to a capture in resonance with Neptune's ascending node. If planet migration is too fast, then Saturn crosses the resonance without being captured and it keeps a small obliquity. This scenario thus gives a lower limit on the migration time scale tau. We found that this boundary depends strongly on Neptune's initial inclination. For two different migration types, we found that tau should be at least greater than 7 Myr. This limit increases rapidly as Neptune's initial inclination decreases from 10 to 1 degree. We also give an algorithm to know if Saturn can be tilted for any migration law., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, published in ApJL

In this paper, we present several gravity tests made in using the last INPOP08 planetary ephemerides. We first propose two methods to estimate the PPN parameter $\beta$ and its correlated value, the Sun J2 and we discuss the correlation between the Sun J2 and the mass of the asteroid ring. We estimate possible advance in the planet perihelia. The latest version of the planetary ephemerides developed at the Paris Observatory and at the Besancon Observatory is presented here. INPOP08 is a 4-dimension ephemeris since it provides to users positions and velocities of planets and the relation between TT and TDB. Investigations leading to improve the modeling of asteroids are described as well as the new sets of observations used for the fit of INPOP08. New observations provided by the European Space Agency (ESA) deduced from the tracking of the Mars Express (MEX) and Venus Express (VEX) missions are presented as well as the normal point deduced from the Cassini mission. Abstract Background Normative reference values for echocardiographic chamber quantification are of great importance; however, this can be challenging. Our aim was to derive these values including degrees of abnormality from a random Central European population sample with a homogeneous subset of healthy subjects. Methods We analysed echocardiograms obtained in a randomly selected population sample during the Czech post-MONICA survey in 2007/2008. Overall, 1850 out of 2273 persons of the whole sample of three districts had adequate echocardiograms (81.4%). A healthy subgroup defined by the absence of known cardiovascular disease was used to define normal reference range limits (n = 575, median age 42 years [IQR 34–52], 57% females). The whole population sample with predefined percentile cut-offs was used to define degrees of abnormality. Results Left ventricular (LV) size tended to decrease with age, while LV mass increased with age in both males and females and in both the healthy and general populations. LV dimensions were larger in males, except for body surface area-indexed LV diameter. M-mode derived LV measurements were larger and LV mass higher compared to 2D measurements. Right ventricle basal dimension was larger in males. Conclusions Our study provides reference ranges for echocardiographic measurements obtained in a healthy subgroup derived from an epidemiological study of a Central European population. Where feasible, degrees of abnormality are provided based on the whole population sample including patients with disease. Our data show that age, gender and measurement method significantly affect cardiac dimensions and function and should be always taken into account.

Background: Several studies have demonstrated the presence of the Borrelia burgdorferi (Bb) genome in the myocardium of patients with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). To further support a causal relationship between the presence of Bb in the heart muscle and the development of DCM, demonstration of the absence of Bb in the myocardium of subjects with normal left ventricular (LV) systolic function is needed. Aim: To determine the prevalence of Bb by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and electron microscopy (EM) in individuals with normal LV systolic function and no history suggestive of myocarditis. Methods: We investigated 50 patients (67 ± 9 years, 15 women) with normal LV ejection fraction (EF) ≥ 50% undergoing cardiac surgery. During surgery, four samples from the right atrial appendage were obtained and subsequently examined by PCR and EM for the presence of Bb, and by immunohistochemistry to detect inflammatory cells. Serological testing of antibodies against Bb was also performed. Results: Neither PCR nor EM detected Bb in any of the subjects. Immunohistological examination revealed myocardial inflammation in 2 individuals (4%). Serological analysis by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay demonstrated IgM antibodies against Bb in 4% and IgG antibodies in 12% of the study cohort; Western blot revealed IgM as well as IgG positivity in 14% of patients. Conclusions: The absence of Bb in the myocardium of individuals who undergo cardiac surgery and have normal LV systolic function supports the idea of Bb pathogenicity in the development of DCM.

Immunochemical methods are used not only in clinical practice for the diagnosis of a wide range of diseases but also in basic and advanced research. Based on the unique reaction between the antibody and its respective antigens, it serves to specifically recognize target molecules in biological complex samples. Current methods of labelling antibodies with elemental labels followed by detection by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) allow detection of multiple antigens in parallel in a single analysis. Using the laser ablation (LA) modality (LA-ICP-MS), it is also possible to monitor the spatial distribution of biogenic elements. Moreover, the employment of metal nanoparticle-labeled antibodies expands the applicability also to molecular imaging by LA-ICP-MS. In this work, conjugates of model monoclonal antibody (DO-1, recognizing p53 protein) with various metal nanoparticles-based labels were created and utilized in dot-blot analysis in order to compare their benefits and disadvantages. Based on experiments with the p53 protein standard, commercial kits of gold nanoparticles proved to be the most suitable for the preparation of conjugates. The LA-ICP-MS demonstrated very good repeatability, wide linear dynamic range (0.1–14 ng), and limit of detection was calculated as a 1.3 pg of p53 protein.

The proposed deep learning framework produced a mean accuracy of 72% and weighted F1 score of 0.57 across subjects for our formulated four-class problem.

International audience; AimsDilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a complex disease where genetics interplay with extrinsic factors. This study aims to compare the phenotype, management, and outcome of familial DCM (FDCM) and non‐familial (sporadic) DCM (SDCM) across Europe. Methods and resultsPatients with DCM that were enrolled in the prospective ESC EORP Cardiomyopathy & Myocarditis Registry were included. Baseline characteristics, genetic testing, genetic yield, and outcome were analysed comparing FDCM and SDCM; 1260 adult patients were studied (238 FDCM, 707 SDCM, and 315 not disclosed). Patients with FDCM were younger (P < 0.01), had less severe disease phenotype at presentation (P < 0.02), more favourable baseline cardiovascular risk profiles (P ≤ 0.007), and less medication use (P ≤ 0.042). Outcome at 1 year was similar and predicted by NYHA class (HR 0.45; 95% CI [0.25–0.81]) and LVEF per % decrease (HR 1.05; 95% CI [1.02–1.08]. Throughout Europe, patients with FDCM received more genetic testing (47% vs. 8%, P < 0.01) and had higher genetic yield (55% vs. 22%, P < 0.01).ConclusionsWe observed that FDCM and SDCM have significant differences at baseline but similar short‐term prognosis. Whether modification of associated cardiovascular risk factors provide opportunities for treatment remains to be investigated. Our results also show a prevalent role of genetics in FDCM and a non‐marginal yield in SDCM although genetic testing is largely neglected in SDCM. Limited genetic testing and heterogeneity in panels provides a scaffold for improvement of guideline adherence.

We sought to explore the relation between CVRF and the clinical characteristics of patients with HCM enrolled in the EURObservational Research Programme (EORP) Cardiomyopathy registry. Methods and results: 1739 patients with HCM were studied. The relation between hypertension (HT), diabetes (DM), body mass index (BMI) and clinical traits was analyzed. Analyses were stratified according to the presence or absence of a pathogenic variant in a sarcomere gene. The prevalence of HT, DM and obesity (Ob) was 37%, 10%, and 21%, respectively. HT, DM and Ob were associated with older age (p

Purpose. To evaluate the effectiveness of deep sclerectomy with T-flux implant (DS T-flux) in patients with pseudoexfoliation glaucoma (PExG). Methods. 20 eyes of 18 patients with medically uncontrolled PExG have undergone DS T-flux implantation. Postoperatively we evaluated the IOP values and the frequency of complications. The minimum follow-up time was 12 months (20 eyes) and the maximum 24 months (10 eyes). Results. The mean preoperative IOP was 36.8±8.7 mmHg. The IOP significantly decreased throughout all postoperative periods (P

Ophthalmology ,RE1-994 - Abstract
Purpose: To evaluate the outcomes of the hybrid technique of posterior lamellar keratoplasty (DMEK-S). Materials and Methods: 71 eyes of 55 patients enrolled in a single-center study underwent posterior lamellar keratoplasty with a hybrid lamella DMEK-S implanted using a solution implantation technique, owing to endothelial dysfunction. The outcome measures studied were visual acuity and endothelial cell density. Results: The rate of endothelial cell loss caused by surgery was 43.8%. During followups, we observed the stabilization of postoperative findings, or at minimum a very low rate of corneal endothelial cell loss. The UCDVA and BCDVA dramatically improved postoperatively. The rebubbling rate in our group of patients was 61.9%. We replaced the lamella due to its failure or malfunction in 17 patients (23.9%). Conclusion: In summary, DMEK-S combines the advantages of DSEK/DSAEK and DMEK. The central zone of bare Descemet’s membrane and endothelium allows for very good visual outcomes, and the peripheral rim allows for better manipulation of the lamella during implantation. It is an effective method of treating the endothelial dysfunction of various etiologies, but the high complication rate needs to be addressed before widespread implementation of the technique in the future.
