Colletotrichum gloeosporioides (Cg), Pestalotiopsis sp. (Ps), Fusarium oxysporum (Fo), and Fusarium proliferatum (Fp) are pathogens that cause various diseases of Cymbidium kanran. Species identification based on the morphological characteristics of pathogen-infected orchids is very complex and difficult; therefore, specific and reliable diagnostic methods are needed. Here, we developed a multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay for simultaneous detection of Cg, Ps, Fo, and Fp. Four pairs of pathogen-specific primers were designed based on the internal transcribed spacer sequences of each pathogen, generating fragments of 480, 407, 321, and 279 bp, respectively. The multiplex PCR assay using these four pairs of mixed primers effectively detected the four pathogens simultaneously, with a sensitivity of 0.1 ng genomic DNA/pathogen. Application of the optimized multiplex PCR assay to symptomatic C. kanran leaf samples effectively detected single or multiple pathogens. These results indicate that the multiplex PCR developed in this study is not only a rapid and reliable method for detecting four problematic pathogens in C. kanran, but also serves as a very useful tool for early diagnosis.

Butirosins are naturally occurring aminoglycoside (AG) antibiotics featuring a 4,5-disubstituted 2-deoxystreptamine (2-DOS) with a (2S)-4-amino-2-hydroxybutyrate (AHBA) side chain. This side chain has been shown to confer resistance against AG-modifying enzymes, leading to ongoing studies on the butirosin biosynthetic pathway and the corresponding enzymes. Butirosin is produced by Niallia (formerly Bacillus) circulans and Bacillus vitellinus, with most research focused on the first strain. To date, no whole-genome analysis has been performed on B. vitellinus. In this study, we sequenced the complete genome of B. vitellinus NBRC 13296 and performed a comparative analysis of different butirosin biosyntheric gene clusters (BGCs), including those from N. circulans. The complete genome of B. vitellinus NBRC 13296 comprises a 6,331,192-base circular chromosome with GC content of 52.68%. The annotation revealed the presence of 5605 CDSs, 70 tRNA genes, 30 rRNA genes, and 3 ncRNA genes in NBRC 13296. The highest dDDH and ANI values between NBRC 13296 and the most closely related type strain, Paenibacillus chitinolyticus KCCM 41,400, were 97.8% and 98.66%, respectively. Based on these genome-based comparative analyses, we propose reclassifying B. vitellinus NBRC 13296 as P. chitinolyticus. Genome mining revealed 18 gene clusters encoding the biosynthesis of diverse secondary metabolites in the genome of B. vitellinus NBRC 13296, indicating the enormous biosynthetic potential of this strain. The predicted structural diversity of the secondary metabolites includes aminoglycosides, PKS, NRPS, PKS–NRPS hybrids, metallophores, phosphonates, terpenes, β-lactones, and RiPP peptides. We then comparatively characterized the butirosin BGCs previously studied in several N. circulans strains. Additionally, the comparative genome analysis revealed complete butirosin BGCs identified from P. chitinolyticus KCCM 41,400, P. chitinolyticus NRRL B-23119, P. chitinolyticus NRRL B-23120, P. chitinolyticus B-14908, P. chitinolyticus YSY-3.1, P. chitinolyticus JMW06, Paenibacillus sp. GbtcB18, Paenibacillus sp. HGH0039, and Paenibacillus sp. MZ04-78.2. Finally, we identified the core region consisting of BtrS, BtrN, BtrM, BtrL, BtrA, BtrB, BtrC, BtrD, BtrD, BtrE, BtrF, BtrG, BtrH, BtrI, BtrI, BtrJ, BtrK, BtrO, BtrP, and BtrV, followed by an upstream region organizing BtrQ, BtrW, BtrX, BtrY, and BtrZ in the same transcriptional direction and sequential genetic arrangement, and a downstream region organizing various proteins based on BtrT, BtrR2, BtrU, and BtrR1. Our study provides insights into the reclassification of B. vitellinus NBRC 13296 to P. chitinolyticus and suggests the need for continued studies on butirosin biosynthesis from an enzymatic perspective.

Estimating soil moisture from microwave brightness temperature is extremely challenging in densely vegetated areas. The soil moisture retrieved from the Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) measurements tends to be consistently overestimated, sometimes exceeding the saturation level of mineral soils. Therefore, the retrieved soil moisture cannot detect or monitor climate extremes, such as floods and droughts for forests, natural resource management, and climate change research. We hypothesize that the main issue is that the scattering albedo (ω) and the optical depth (τ) are parameterized solely with NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index), neglecting the polarization characteristics from vegetation structure. This study proposes a weighting factor between scattering and optical thickness, a function of MPDI (Microwave Polarization Difference Index), and applies it to both parameters simultaneously to increase the scattering effect and decrease the attenuation effect in high MPDI. The validation results based on the Climate Reference Network revealed that considering MPDI is critical in reducing soil moisture overestimation errors and obtaining more accurate soil moisture over forested regions. This results in correlation improving from 0.36 to 0.44, a decrease in ubRMSE from 0.179 to 0.125 cm³cm−³, and bias lowering from 0.127 to 0.060 cm³cm−³ in comparison with the SMAP measurements over forested regions. Editor highlights: • Optical depth increases with high NDVI and low MPDI. • Scattering albedo increases with high NDVI and high MPDI. • Increasing scattering albedo decreases brightness temperature in forward simulation. • Decreased brightness temperature in simulation resolved overestimation of SMAP SM. • L-band (1.4 GHz) radiometer measurements can assess forest soil moisture (SM).

Red beetroots, rich in betanin, may act as prebiotics and impact gut microbiota. Because the human gut microbiota is unique to each person, the effectiveness of prebiotics varies with the enterotype. In this study, we hypothesized that the effects of red beetroot powder (RP) and betanin pigment (BP) would differ depending on the enterotype. Fecal samples from 30 subjects were analyzed and categorized into three enterotypes: Phocaeicola, Prevotella, and Bifidobacterium. Feces were collected from one representative subject from each enterotype cluster for fermentation. Results showed that RP and BP affected microbiota composition and short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) production differently across enterotypes. The Bifidobacterium cluster showed significantly reduced alpha diversity, with the direction of change in the gut microbiota composition being different from that of other subjects. Additionally, SCFAs significantly increased, with the highest increase in the Bifidobacterium cluster. In this cluster, metabolic pathways related to SCFAs (i.e., starch and sucrose metabolism and glycolysis/gluconeogenesis) were altered. Conversely, Prevotella-dominant feces exhibited fewer changes in SCFAs and a lower increase in Bifidobacterium abundance than the others. These findings highlight that RP and BP elicit enterotype-specific responses in the gut microbiota composition and SCFA production, emphasizing the importance of enterotypes in personalized nutrition.

The genus Lentzea is a prolific source of bioactive and structurally diverse secondary metabolites. We isolated a novel strain, Lentzea sp. JNUCC 0626, from Hwasun Gotjawal on Jeju Island, Korea. Based on 16S rRNA partial gene sequence analysis, strain JNUCC 0626 is closely related to Lentzea isolaginshaensis NX62 (99.41% similarity), Lentzea pudingi DHS C021 (99.31%), and Lentzea cavernae SYSU K10001 (99.26%). From the fermentation broth of JNUCC 0626, we isolated 1-acetyl-β-carboline, whose structure was established using IR, HR-ESI-MS, and 1D- and 2D-NMR techniques. 1-acetyl-β-carboline was found to activate melanogenesis in mouse B16F10 cells without cytotoxicity at concentrations up to 50 μM. At this concentration, the compound increased melanin content by 27.44% and tyrosinase activity by 240.64% compared to the control, by upregulating key melanogenic enzymes, including tyrosinase, TRP-1, TRP-2, and microphthalmia-associated transcription factor (MITF), a central regulator of melanogenesis. In addition, 1-acetyl-β-carboline significantly inhibited ERK phosphorylation, reducing it by 20.79% at a concentration of 12.5 μM and by 25.63% at 25 μM. This inhibition supports the hypothesis that 1-acetyl-β-carboline enhances melanin synthesis by upregulating MITF and melanogenic enzymes via the ERK signaling pathway. This study aimed to isolate and identify 1-acetyl-β-carboline from a novel strain of Lentzea sp. JNUCC 0626, discovered in Gotjawal, Jeju Island, and to evaluate its effect on melanin production in B16F10 melanoma cells. Skin irritation tests on 32 subjects confirmed its safety for topical use, and the findings suggest that 1-acetyl-β-carboline, which enhances melanogenesis without cytotoxicity, holds promise as a therapeutic agent for hypopigmentation-related conditions or as a cosmetic ingredient.

The world is facing rapid climate change and a fast-growing global population. It is believed that the world population will be 9.7 billion in 2050. However, recent agriculture production is not enough to feed the current population of 7.9 billion people, which is causing a huge hunger problem. Therefore, feeding the 9.7 billion population in 2050 will be a huge target. Climate change is becoming a huge threat to global agricultural production, and it is expected to become the worst threat to it in the upcoming years. Keeping this in view, it is very important to breed climate-resilient plants. Legumes are considered an important pillar of the agriculture production system and a great source of high-quality protein, minerals, and vitamins. During the last two decades, advancements in OMICs technology revolutionized plant breeding and emerged as a crop-saving tool in wake of the climate change. Various OMICs approaches like Next-Generation sequencing (NGS), Transcriptomics, Proteomics, and Metabolomics have been used in legumes under abiotic stresses. The scientific community successfully utilized these platforms and investigated the Quantitative Trait Loci (QTL), linked markers through genome-wide association studies, and developed KASP markers that can be helpful for the marker-assisted breeding of legumes. Gene-editing techniques have been successfully proven for soybean, cowpea, chickpea, and model legumes such as Medicago truncatula and Lotus japonicus. A number of efforts have been made to perform gene editing in legumes. Moreover, the scientific community did a great job of identifying various genes involved in the metabolic pathways and utilizing the resulted information in the development of climate-resilient legume cultivars at a rapid pace. Keeping in view, this review highlights the contribution of OMICs approaches to abiotic stresses in legumes. We envisage that the presented information will be helpful for the scientific community to develop climate-resilient legume cultivars.

Abstract Projections of changes in extreme climate are sometimes predicted by multimodel ensemble methods that combine forecasts from individual simulation models using weighted averaging. One method to assign weight to each model is the Bayesian model averaging (BMA) in which posterior probability is used. For the cases of extreme climate, the generalized extreme value distribution (GEVD) is typically used. We applied the approach of GEV‐embedded BMA to a series of 35 years of the annual maximum daily precipitation data (both historical data and data gathered from simulation experiments for future periods) over the Korean peninsula as simulated by the models in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5). Simulation data under two Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) scenarios, namely RCP4.5 and RCP8.5, were used. Observed data and 17 CMIP5 models for 12 gird cells in Korea have been examined to predict future changes in precipitation extremes. A simple regional frequency analysis of pooling observations from three stations in each cell was employed to reduce the estimation variance and local fluctuations. A bias correction technique using the regression‐type transfer function was applied to these simulation data. Return levels spanning over 20 and 50 years, as well as the return periods relative to the reference years (1971–2005), were estimated for two future periods, namely Period 1 (2021–2050) and Period 2 (2066–2095). From these analyses, relative increase observed in the spatially averaged 20‐year (50‐year) return level was approximately 23% (16%) and 45% (36%) in the RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 experiments, respectively, by the end of the 21st century. We concluded that extreme rainfalls will likely occur two times and four times more frequently in the RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios, respectively, as compared to in the reference years by the end of the 21st century.

Accurate initial soil moisture conditions are essential for numerical weather prediction models, because they play a major role in land–atmosphere interactions. This study constructed a soil moisture data assimilation system and evaluated its impacts on the Global Data Assimilation and Prediction System based on the Korea Integrated Model (GDAPS-KIM) to improve its weather forecast skill. Soil moisture data retrieved from the Advanced Scatterometer (ASCAT) onboard the Meteorological Operational Satellite was assimilated into GDAPS-KIM using the ensemble Kalman filter method, and its impacts were evaluated for the 2019 boreal summer period. Our results indicated that the soil moisture data assimilation improved the agreement of the observations with the initial conditions of GDAPS-KIM. This led to a statistically significant improvement in the accuracy of the initial fields. A comparison of a five-day forecast against an ERA5 reanalysis and in situ observations revealed a reduction in the dry and warm biases of GDAPS-KIM over the surface and in the lower- and mid-level atmospheres. The temperature bias correction through the initialization of the soil moisture estimates from the data assimilation system was shown in the five-day weather forecast (root mean squared errors reduction of the temperature at 850 hPa by approximately 5% in East Asia).

Arthropod-borne infectious diseases cause many deaths and a major economic burden worldwide. Repellents play an important role in protecting people from infectious biting arthropods. The repellency of veratraldehyde, a known food additive, and the WJ-1041 formulation containing 10% veratraldehyde was tested against Aedes albopictus and Culex pipiens pallens females and Haemaphysalis longicornis nymphs using arm-in-cage, indoor or filter paper tests. Veratraldehyde exhibited repellency similar to or lower than that of n,n-diethyl-meta-toluamide (DEET) against A. albopictus, but in H. longicornis, the activity of veratraldehyde was better than that of DEET. The repellency of the 10% veratraldehyde solution was comparable to that of 20% DEET against the two mosquitoes. When comparing repellency between the WJ-1041 formulation (10% veratraldehyde) and 10% DEET against C. pipiens pallens, A. Albopictus and H. longicornis, the two showed similar repellency and complete protection time (CPT) values. However, there was a small difference depending on the tested insects. The absorption of veratraldehyde via skin was minimal, if at all. The pharmacokinetic parameters (Cmax and Tmax) of veratraldehyde in blood samples of rats were not different from those of the control group. Based on these results, veratraldehyde has high potential to be commercialized as a repellent agent against infectious disease-borne pests in the near future.

We investigated the effects of cooking (steaming and microwaving) and processing (freeze-drying and hot-air-drying) methods on the antioxidant activity of broccoli florets. 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH•), 2,2’-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS•), and alkyl• free radical scavenging assays were employed to assess anti-oxidant potentials. The cytoprotective effect against oxidative damage induced by H2O2 was studied using hepatocellular carcinoma (HepG2) cells. Anti-proliferative effects were assessed in MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells. L-sulforaphane in broccoli extracts was quantified using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Steam and microwave treatments caused increases in total polyphenol content (TPC), whereas the total flavonoid content (TFC) decreased following steam treatment. A slight increase in TFC was observed in the microwaved samples. Extracts of all broccoli samples showed almost identical radical scavenging and cytoprotective effects. HPLC demonstrated that steamed (3 min)-freeze-dried (F-S3) and microwaved (2 min)-freeze-dried (F-M2) samples exhibited elevated levels of L-sulforaphane. In addition, the F-S3 and F-M2 extracts displayed strong anti-proliferative effects in MCF-7 cells, which correlated with L-sulforaphane content. As we observed no significant decrease in the antioxidant activity of broccoli florets, the cooking and processing methods and conditions studied here are recommended for broccoli.

In recent decades, extremely cold winters have occurred repeatedly throughout the Northern Hemisphere, including the Korean Peninsula (hereafter, Korea). Typically, cold winter temperatures in Korea can be linked to the strengthening of the Siberian High (SH). Although previous studies have investigated the typical relationship between the SH and winter temperatures in Korea, this study uniquely focused on a change in the relationship, which reflects the influence of the Arctic Oscillation (AO) and El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO). A significant change in the 15-year moving correlation between the SH and the surface air temperature average in Korea (K-tas) was observed in January. The correlation changed from −0.80 during 1971–1990 to −0.16 during 1991–2010. The mean sea-level pressure pattern regressed with the temperature, and a singular value decomposition analysis that incorporated the temperature and pressure supports that the negative high correlation during 1971–1990 was largely affected by AO. This connection with AO is substantiated by empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis with an upper-level geopotential height at 300 hPa. In the second mode of the EOF, the temperature and pressure patterns were primarily affected by ENSO during 1991–2010. Consequently, the interdecadal change in correlation between K-tas and the SH in January can be attributed to the dominant effect of AO from 1971–1990 and of ENSO from 1991–2010. Our results suggest that the relative importance of these factors in terms of the January climate in Korea has changed on a multidecadal scale.

Understanding the response of the Earth system to CO2 removal (CDR) is crucial because the possibility of irreversibility exists. Therefore, the Carbon Dioxide Removal Model Inter-comparison Project (CDRMIP) for the protocol experiment in the Coupled Model Inter-comparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) has been developed. Our analysis focuses on the regional response in the hydrological cycle, especially in East Asia (EA). The peak temperature changes in EA (5.9 K) and the Korean peninsula (KO) (6.1 K) are larger than the global mean surface air temperature (GSAT) response. The precipitation changes are approximately 9.4% (EA) and 23.2% (KO) at the phase change time (130–150 years); however, the largest increase is approximately 16.6% (EA) and 36.5% (KO) in the ramp-down period (150–160 years). In addition, the differences are below 5 mm/day and 1 day for the precipitation intensity indices (Rx1day and Rx5day) and frequency indices (R95 and R99), respectively. Furthermore, the monsoon rainband of the ramp-down period moves northward as the earlier onset with high confidence compared to the ramp-up period; however, it does not move north to the KO region. The results suggest that reducing CO2 moves the rainband southward. However, a detailed interpretation in terms of the mechanism needs to be carried out in further research.

Estimating future sea level rise (SLR) and sea surface temperature (SST) is essential to implement mitigation and adaptation options within a sustainable development framework. This study estimates regional SLR and SST changes around the Korean peninsula. Two Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSP1-2.6 and SSP5-8.5) scenarios and nine Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) model simulations are used to estimate the changes in SLR and SST. At the end of the 21st century, global SLR is expected to be 0.28 m (0.17–0.38 m) and 0.65 m (0.52–0.78 m) for SSP 1–2.6 and SSP5-8.5, respectively. Regional change around the Korean peninsula (0.25 m (0.15–0.35 m; SSP1-2.6) and 0.63 m (0.50–0.76 m; SSP5-8.5)) is similar with global SLR. The discrepancy between global and regional changes is distinct in SST warming rather than SLR. For SSP5-8.5, SST around the Korean peninsula projects is to rise from 0.49 °C to 0.59 °C per decade, which is larger than the global SST trend (0.39 °C per decade). Considering this, the difference of regional SST change is related to the local ocean current change, such as the Kuroshio Current. Additionally, ocean thermal expansion and glacier melting are major contributors to SLR, and the contribution rates of glacier melting increase in higher emission scenarios.

Scientists occasionally predict projected changes in extreme climate using multi-model ensemble methods that combine predictions from individual simulation models. To predict future changes in precipitation extremes in the Korean peninsula, we examined the observed data and 21 models of the Coupled Model Inter-Comparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) over East Asia. We applied generalized extreme value distribution (GEVD) to a series of annual maximum daily precipitation (AMP1) data. Multivariate bias-corrected simulation data under three shared socioeconomic pathway (SSP) scenarios—namely, SSP2-4.5, SSP3-7.0, and SSP5-8.5—were used. We employed a model weighting method that accounts for both performance and independence (PI-weighting). In calculating the PI-weights, two shape parameters should be determined, but usually, a perfect model test method requires a considerable amount of computing time. To address this problem, we suggest simple ways for selecting two shape parameters based on the chi-square statistic and entropy. Variance decomposition was applied to quantify the uncertainty of projecting the future AMP1. Return levels spanning over 20 and 50 years, as well as the return periods relative to the reference years (1973–2010), were estimated for three overlapping periods in the future, namely, period 1 (2021–2050), period 2 (2046–2075), and period 3 (2071–2100). From these analyses, we estimated that the relative increases in the observations for the spatial median 20-year return level will be approximately 18.4% in the SSP2-4.5, 25.9% in the SSP3-7.0, and 41.7% in the SSP5-8.5 scenarios, respectively, by the end of the 21st century. We predict that severe rainfall will be more prominent in the southern and central parts of the Korean peninsula.

This study investigates the effects of atmosphere-ocean coupling for medium-range forecasts by using coupled numerical weather prediction (NWP) experiments based on the unified model (UM) on a case study of the 2016 heatwave over the Korean Peninsula. Atmospheric nudging experiments were carried out to determine the key regions which may have large impacts on the forecasts of the heat wave. The results of the nudging experiments suggest that key forcing from the Mongolia region gives the largest impact to this case by causing a transport of warm air from the northwest part of Korea. Moreover, the Pacific region shows an important role in the global circulation in nudging experiments. Results from the atmosphere-ocean coupled model show no clear benefit for the extreme heat wave temperatures in this case. In addition, more model development seems to be needed to improve the representation of sea surface temperature (SST) in some key areas. Nevertheless, it is confirmed that the atmosphere-ocean coupled simulation produces a better representation of aspects of the large-scale flow such as the blocking high over the Kamchatka Peninsula, the high pressure system in the northwest Pacific and Hadley circulation. The results presented in this study show that atmosphere-ocean coupling can be an important way to improve the deterministic model forecasts as the lead time increases beyond a few days.

Climate sensitivity and feedback processes are important for understanding Earth’s system response to increased CO2 concentration in the atmosphere. Many modelling groups that contribute to Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 6 (CMIP6) have reported a larger equilibrium climate sensitivity (ECS) with their models compared to CMIP5 models. This consistent result is also found in the Korea Meteorological Administration Advanced Community Earth System model (K-ACE). Idealized climate simulation is conducted as an entry card for CMIP6 to understand Earth’s system response in new coupled models and compared to CMIP5 models. The ECS in the K-ACE is 4.83 K, which is higher than the range (2.1–4.7 K) of CMIP5 models in sensitivity to CO2 change and higher bound (1.8–5.6 K) of CMIP6 models. The radiative feedback consists of clear-sky and cloud radiative feedback. Clear-sky feedback of K-ACE is similar to CMIP5 models whereas cloud feedback of K-ACE is more positive. The result is attributable for strong positive shortwave cloud radiative effect (CRE) feedback associated with reduced low-level cloud cover at mid latitude in both hemispheres. Despite the cancellations in strong negative long wave CRE feedback with the changes in high-level clouds in the tropics, shortwave CRE has a dominant effect in net CRE. Detailed understanding of cloud feedback and cloud properties needs further study.

As one of the main drivers for climate change, it is important to understand changes in anthropogenic aerosol emissions and evaluate the climate impact. Anthropogenic aerosols have affected global climate while exerting a much larger influence on regional climate by their short lifetime and heterogeneous spatial distribution. In this study, the effective radiative forcing (ERF), which has been accepted as a useful index for quantifying the effect of climate forcing, was evaluated to understand the effects of aerosol on regional climate over a historical period (1850–2014). Eastern United States (EUS), Western European Union (WEU), and Eastern Central China (ECC), are regions that predominantly emit anthropogenic aerosols and were analyzed using Coupled Model Intercomparison Project 6 (CMIP6) simulations implemented within the framework of the Aerosol Chemistry Model Intercomparison Project (AerChemMIP) in the UK’s Earth System Model (UKESM1). In EUS and WEU, where industrialization occurred relatively earlier, the negative ERF seems to have been recovering in recent decades based on the decreasing trend of aerosol emissions. Conversely, the radiative cooling in ECC seems to be strengthened as aerosol emission continuously increases. These aerosol ERFs have been largely attributed to atmospheric rapid adjustments, driven mainly by aerosol-cloud interactions rather than direct effects of aerosol such as scattering and absorption.

Study DesignA case controlled study with prospective data collection.PurposeTo evaluate the early influence and the final consequence of demineralized bone matrix (DBM) on auto-local bone as a graft enhancer in posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF).Overview of LiteratureDBM is known as an osteoinductive material; however, it has not been clearly recognized to enhance auto-local bone with a small amount.MethodsPatients who had a PLIF were allocated into two groups. Group I (70 cases) used auto-local bone chips and group II (44 cases) used DBM as an additive to auto-local bone, 1 mL per a segment. Group selection was alternated. Early assessment was performed by computed tomography at 6 months and final assessment was done by simple radiography after 24 months at least. The degree of bone formation was assessed by 4 grade scale.ResultsThe subjects of both groups were homogenous and had similar Oswestry Disability Index at final assessment. The ratio of auto-local bone chips and DBM was 6:1. The degree of bone formation at 6 months after surgery was superior in group II. However, there was no significant difference between the two groups at the final assessment.ConclusionsDBM was not recognized to enhance auto-local bone with small amount.

Ossification of the ligamentum flavum is a rare cause of thoracic myelopathy. It develops in East Asians more frequently than in people from other areas. The exact pathophysiology has not been elucidated yet; however, it largely depends on biomechanical alterations, especially changes in the tensile force. Because the spinal cord is compressed from the posterior side, the first and most common clinical manifestation is usually loss of functional gait and spastic paralysis, which develop as the spinal cord compression progresses. The choice of diagnostic imaging is T2 sagittal magnetic resonance imaging scanning. Whole spine scanning is mandatory to identify multiple areas of compression and any associated distal lumbar diseases. Fine computed tomography imaging is necessary to make a differential diagnosis and set up a precise surgical plan. Conservative treatment does not work in this disorder. Decompression surgery is the only option and prognosis after surgical treatment is better with this disorder than with other causes of thoracic myelopathy. The severity of preoperative symptoms and the time interval before surgical treatment are the most important prognostic factors.

The effects of the emissions of anthropogenic greenhouse gases (GHGs), aerosols, and natural forcing on the summer-mean surface air temperature (TAS) in the East Asia (EA) land surface in the 20th century are analyzed using six-member coupled model inter-comparison project 5 (CMIP5) general circulation model (GCM) ensembles from five single-forcing simulations. The simulation with the observed GHG concentrations and aerosol emissions reproduces well the land-mean EA TAS trend characterized by warming periods in the early (1911−1940; P1) and late (1971−2000; P3) 20th century separated by a cooling period (1941−1970; P2). The warming in P1 is mainly due to the natural variability related to GHG increases and the long-term recovery from volcanic activities in late-19th/early-20th century. The cooling in P2 occurs as the combined cooling by anthropogenic aerosols and increased volcanic eruptions in the 1960s exceeds the warming by the GHG increases and the nonlinear interaction term. In P3, the combined warming by GHGs and the interaction term exceeds the cooling by anthropogenic aerosols to result in the warming. The SW forcing is not driving the TAS increase in P1/P3 as the shortwave (SW) forcing is heavily affected by the increased cloudiness and the longwave (LW) forcing dominates the SW forcing. The LW forcing to TAS cannot be separated from the LW response to TAS, preventing further analyses. The interaction among these forcing affects TAS via largely modifying the atmospheric water cycle, especially in P2 and P3. Key forcing terms on TAS such as the temperature advection related to large-scale circulation changes cannot be analyzed due to the lack of model data.
