Abstract

Abstract Here we show, for the first time, spontaneous cortical spreading depolarization (CSD) events – the electrophysiological correlate of the migraine aura – in animals by using the first generated familial hemiplegic migraine type 3 (FHM3) transgenic mouse model. The mutant mice express L263V‐mutated α1 subunits in voltage‐gated NaV1.1 sodium channels (Scn1aL263V). CSDs consistently propagated from visual to motor cortex, recapitulating what has been shown in patients with migraine with aura. This model may be valuable for the preclinical study of migraine with aura and other diseases in which spreading depolarization is a prominent feature.

Abstract

Abstract The Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) is a proposed future high-luminosity linear electron-positron collider operating at three energy stages, with nominal centre-of-mass energies s $$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 380 GeV, 1.5 TeV, and 3 TeV. Its aim is to explore the energy frontier, providing sensitivity to physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM) and precision measurements of Standard Model processes with an emphasis on Higgs boson and top-quark physics. The opportunities for top-quark physics at CLIC are discussed in this paper. The initial stage of operation focuses on top-quark pair production measurements, as well as the search for rare flavour-changing neutral current (FCNC) top-quark decays. It also includes a top-quark pair production threshold scan around 350 GeV which provides a precise measurement of the top-quark mass in a well-defined theoretical framework. At the higher-energy stages, studies are made of top-quark pairs produced in association with other particles. A study of t̄tH production including the extraction of the top Yukawa coupling is presented as well as a study of vector boson fusion (VBF) production, which gives direct access to high-energy electroweak interactions. Operation above 1 TeV leads to more highly collimated jet environments where dedicated methods are used to analyse the jet constituents. These techniques enable studies of the top-quark pair production, and hence the sensitivity to BSM physics, to be extended to higher energies. This paper also includes phenomenological interpretations that may be performed using the results from the extensive top-quark physics programme at CLIC.

Abstract

Abstract A new design of a detector plane of sub-millimetre thickness for an electromagnetic sampling calorimeter is presented. It is intended to be used in the luminometers LumiCal and BeamCal in future linear e$$^{+}$$ + e$$^{-}$$ - collider experiments. The detector planes were produced utilising novel connectivity scheme technologies. They were installed in a compact prototype of the calorimeter and tested at DESY with an electron beam of energy 1–5 GeV. The performance of a prototype of a compact LumiCal comprising eight detector planes was studied. The effective Molière radius at 5 GeV was determined to be (8.1 ± 0.1 (stat) ± 0.3 (syst)) mm, a value well reproduced by the Monte Carlo (MC) simulation (8.4 ± 0.1) mm. The dependence of the effective Molière radius on the electron energy in the range 1–5 GeV was also studied. Good agreement was obtained between data and MC simulation.

Abstract The Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) is an option for a future $${\mathrm{e}^{+}}{\mathrm{e}^{-}} $$ e + e - collider operating at centre-of-mass energies up to $$3\,\text {TeV} $$ 3 TeV , providing sensitivity to a wide range of new physics phenomena and precision physics measurements at the energy frontier. This paper is the first comprehensive presentation of the Higgs physics reach of CLIC operating at three energy stages: $$\sqrt{s} = 350\,\text {GeV} $$ s = 350 GeV , 1.4 and $$3\,\text {TeV} $$ 3 TeV . The initial stage of operation allows the study of Higgs boson production in Higgsstrahlung ( $${\mathrm{e}^{+}}{\mathrm{e}^{-}} \rightarrow {\mathrm{Z}} {\mathrm{H}} $$ e + e - → Z H ) and $${\mathrm{W}} {\mathrm{W}} $$ W W -fusion ( $${\mathrm{e}^{+}}{\mathrm{e}^{-}} \rightarrow {\mathrm{H}} {{\nu }}_{\!\mathrm{e}} {\bar{{\nu }}}_{\!\mathrm{e}} $$ e + e - → H ν e ν ¯ e ), resulting in precise measurements of the production cross sections, the Higgs total decay width $$\varGamma _{{\mathrm{H}}}$$ Γ H , and model-independent determinations of the Higgs couplings. Operation at $$\sqrt{s} > 1\,\text {TeV} $$ s > 1 TeV provides high-statistics samples of Higgs bosons produced through $${\mathrm{W}} {\mathrm{W}} $$ W W -fusion, enabling tight constraints on the Higgs boson couplings. Studies of the rarer processes $${\mathrm{e}^{+}}{\mathrm{e}^{-}} \rightarrow \mathrm{t} {\bar{\mathrm{t}}} {\mathrm{H}} $$ e + e - → t t ¯ H and $${\mathrm{e}^{+}}{\mathrm{e}^{-}} \rightarrow {\mathrm{H}} {\mathrm{H}} {{\nu }}_{\!\mathrm{e}} {\bar{{\nu }}}_{\!\mathrm{e}} $$ e + e - → H H ν e ν ¯ e allow measurements of the top Yukawa coupling and the Higgs boson self-coupling. This paper presents detailed studies of the precision achievable with Higgs measurements at CLIC and describes the interpretation of these measurements in a global fit.

Abstract

IEEE transactions on nuclear science 67(10), 2263 - 2272 (2020). doi:10.1109/TNS.2020.3019887, A novel monolithic pixelated sensor and readout chip, the compact linear collider tracker detector (CLICTD) chip, is presented. The CLICTD chip was designed targeting the requirements of the silicon tracker development for the experiment at the compact linear collider (CLIC) and has been fabricated in a modified 180 nm CMOS imaging process with charge collection on a high-resistivity p-type epitaxial layer. The chip features a matrix of $16\times 128$ elongated channels, each measuring $300\times 30\,\,\mu \text {m}^{2}$ . Each channel contains 8 equidistant collection electrodes and analog readout circuits to ensure prompt signal formation. A simultaneous 8-bit time-of-arrival (with 10 ns time bins) and 5-bit time-over-threshold measurement is performed on the combined digital output of the 8 subpixels in every channel. The chip has been fabricated in two process variants and characterized in laboratory measurements using electrical test pulses and radiation sources. Results show a minimum threshold between 135 and 180 e$^−$ and a noise of about 14 e$^−$ rms. In this paper, the active sensor depth is investigated in the monolithic small collection-electrode technology demonstrator CLICTD. Charged particle beams are used to study the charge-collection properties and the performance of devices with different thicknesses both for perpendicular and inclined particle incidence. In CMOS sensors with a high-resistivity Czochralski substrate, the depth of the sensitive volume is found to increase by a factor two in comparison with standard epitaxial material and leads to significant improvements in the hit-detection efficiency and the spatial and time resolution., Published by North-Holland Publ. Abstract

Nuclear instruments & methods in physics research / A 1006, 165396 (2021). doi:10.1016/j.nima.2021.165396, The CLIC Tracker Detector (CLICTD) is a monolithic pixel sensor. It is fabricated in a 180 nm CMOS imaging process, modified with an additional deep low-dose n-type implant to obtain full lateral depletion. The sensor features a small collection diode, which is essential for achieving a low input capacitance. The CLICTD sensor was designed as a technology demonstrator in the context of the tracking detector studies for the Compact Linear Collider (CLIC). Its design characteristics are of broad interest beyond CLIC, for HL-LHC tracking detector upgrades. It is produced in two different pixel flavours: one with a continuous deep n-type implant, and one with a segmented n-type implant to ensure fast charge collection. The pixel matrix consists of 16 �� 128 detection channels measuring 300 ��m �� 30 ��m. Each detection channel is segmented into eight sub-pixels to reduce the amount of digital circuity while maintaining a small collection electrode pitch. This paper presents the characterisation results of the CLICTD sensor in a particle beam. The different pixel flavours are compared in detail by using the simultaneous time-over-threshold and time-of-arrival measurement functionalities. Most notably, a spatial resolution down to (4.6��0.2) ��m is measured. A time resolution down to (5.8��0.1) ns is observed, after applying an offline time-walk correction using the pixel-charge information. Abstract

Journal of Instrumentation 17(05), P05022 (2022). doi:10.1088/1748-0221/17/05/P05022, The Compact Muon Solenoid collaboration is designing a new high-granularity endcap calorimeter, HGCAL, to be installed later this decade. As part of this development work, a prototype system was built, with an electromagnetic section consisting of 14 double-sided structures, providing 28 sampling layers. Each sampling layer has an hexagonal module, where a multipad large-area silicon sensor is glued between an electronics circuit board and a metal baseplate. The sensor pads of approximately 1.1 cm$^{2}$ are wire-bonded to the circuit board and are readout by custom integrated circuits. The prototype was extensively tested with beams at CERN's Super Proton Synchrotron in 2018. Based on the data collected with beams of positrons, with energies ranging from 20 to 300 GeV, measurements of the energy resolution and linearity, the position and angular resolutions, and the shower shapes are presented and compared to a detailed Geant4 simulation., Published by Inst. of Physics, London

Abstract

The use of Trastuzumab (Herceptin), a monoclonal antibody (mAb) targeting HER2/neu, results in an increased median survival in Her2+ breast cancer patients. The tumour mutational burden and the presence of tumour infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) clearly correlate with response to trastuzumab. Here, we investigated if the immunogenicity of the transplantable rat-neu+ tumour cell line (TUBO) derived from a BALB/c-NeuT primary tumour is associated with the response to anti-neu mAb therapy. We compared the TUBO tumour outgrowth and tumour infiltrating T cells in isogenic (BALB/c-NeuT) and non-isogenic (WT BALB/c) recipient mice. Furthermore, therapeutic efficacy of anti-neu mAb and the contribution of T cells were examined in both mouse strains. The outgrowth of untreated tumours was significantly better in BALB/c-NeuT than WT BALB/c mice. Moreover, tumour infiltrating T cells were more abundantly present in WT BALB/c than BALB/c-NeuT mice, showing that the TUBO tumour was more immunogenic in WT BALB/c mice. In TUBO tumour bearing WT BALB/c mice, anti-neu mAb therapy resulted in an increase of tumour infiltrating T cells and long-term survival. When T cells were depleted, this strong anti-tumour effect was reduced to an outgrowth delay. In contrast, in TUBO tumour bearing BALB/c-NeuT mice, treatment with anti-neu mAb resulted only in tumour outgrowth delay, both in the presence and absence of T cells. We concluded that in immunogenic tumours the response to anti-neu mAb therapy is enhanced by additional T cell involvement compared to the response to anti-neu mAb in non-immunogenic tumours.

Abstract

Journal of Instrumentation 16(04), T04001 (2021). doi:10.1088/1748-0221/16/04/T04001, The CMS experiment at the CERN LHC will be upgraded to accommodate the 5-fold increase in the instantaneous luminosity expected at the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) [1]. Concomitant with this increase will be an increase in the number of interactions in each bunch crossing and a significant increase in the total ionising dose and fluence. One part of this upgrade is the replacement of the current endcap calorimeters with a high granularity sampling calorimeter equipped with silicon sensors, designed to manage the high collision rates [2]. As part of the development of this calorimeter, a series of beam tests have been conducted with different sampling configurations using prototype segmented silicon detectors. In the most recent of these tests, conducted in late 2018 at the CERN SPS, the performance of a prototype calorimeter equipped with ���12,000 channels of silicon sensors was studied with beams of high-energy electrons, pions and muons. Abstract

Journal of Instrumentation 16(04), T04002 (2021). doi:10.1088/1748-0221/16/04/T04002, As part of its HL-LHC upgrade program, the CMS collaboration is developing a High Granularity Calorimeter (CE) to replace the existing endcap calorimeters. The CE is a sampling calorimeter with unprecedented transverse and longitudinal readout for both electromagnetic (CE-E) and hadronic (CE-H) compartments. The calorimeter will be built with ���30,000 hexagonal silicon modules. Prototype modules have been constructed with 6-inch hexagonal silicon sensors with cell areas of 1.1 cm2, and the SKIROC2-CMS readout ASIC. Beam tests of different sampling configurations were conducted with the prototype modules at DESY and CERN in 2017 and 2018. Abstract

The High Luminosity phase of the Large Hadron Collider will deliver 10 times more integrated luminosity than the existing collider, posing significant challenges for radiation tolerance and event pileup on detectors, especially for forward calorimetry. As part of its upgrade program, the Compact Muon Solenoid collaboration is designing a high-granularity calorimeter (HGCAL) to replace the existing endcap calorimeters. It will feature unprecedented transverse and longitudinal readout and triggering segmentation for both electromagnetic and hadronic sections. The electromagnetic section and a large fraction of the hadronic section will be based on hexagonal silicon sensors of 0.5-1 cm2 cell size, with the remainder of the hadronic section being based on highly-segmented scintillators with silicon photomultiplier readout. The intrinsic high-precision timing capabilities of the silicon sensors will add an extra dimension to event reconstruction, especially in terms of pileup rejection. First hexagonal silicon modules, using the existing Skiroc2 front-end ASIC developed for CALICE, have been tested in beams at Fermilab and CERN in 2016. We present results from these tests, in terms of system stability, calibration with minimum-ionizing particles and resolution (energy, position and timing) for electrons, and the comparisons of these quantities with GEANT4-based simulation. © 2018 CERN for the benefit of the CMS collaboration.. Abstract

The Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) is an option for a future e+e- collider operating at centre-of-mass energies up to 3 TeV, providing sensitivity to a wide range of new physics phenomena and precision physics measurements at the energy frontier. This paper is the first comprehensive presentation of the Higgs physics reach of CLIC operating at three energy stages: sqrt(s) = 350 GeV, 1.4 TeV and 3 TeV. The initial stage of operation allows the study of Higgs boson production in Higgsstrahlung (e+e- -> ZH) and WW-fusion (e+e- -> Hnunu), resulting in precise measurements of the production cross sections, the Higgs total decay width Gamma_H, and model-independent determinations of the Higgs couplings. Operation at sqrt(s) > 1 TeV provides high-statistics samples of Higgs bosons produced through WW-fusion, enabling tight constraints on the Higgs boson couplings. Studies of the rarer processes e+e- -> ttH and e+e- -> HHnunu allow measurements of the top Yukawa coupling and the Higgs boson self-coupling. Abstract

The UA2 experiment at CERN is currently upgrading its apparatus to take advantage of the higher accelerator luminosity to be provided from November 1987. The first large particle tracking detector using scintillating optical fibres will form a major part of this upgrade. The detector is built by the Cambridge, CERN and Saclay groups. The Scintillating Fibre Detector is a cylinder of radius 38 to 44 cm, composed of 60000 plastic optical fibres of length over 2 m. The 1 mm diameter fibres are optically clad and aluminised, and are arranged in 24 layers. The detector will be used to track charged particles produced in pp interactions, and also contains a lead converter to cause neutral and charged electromagnetic particles to shower. The signals from the fibres are amplified, multiplexed and digitised by 32 readout chains. These consist of: • —A large aperture, de-magnifying image intensifier, providing a gain of ∼ 40000. Extremely fast phosphors are employed for the three stages, to match the short time (4 ps) between particle interactions; • —Charge-coupled devices (CCDs) converting the optical image into a single train of electrical pulses for 2000 fibres. A novel use of the anti-blooming electrode of the CCD enables unwanted images to be cleared in • —A Fastbus digitiser, which processes the video signal, providing a large degree of data reduction. A full-scale prototype of 960 fibres with readout has been tested in a particle beam. It has demonstrated a good spatial resolution of the tracks (

Abstract

The HARP resistive plate chamber (RPC) system was designed for time-of-flight measurement in the large-angle acceptance region of the HARP spectrometer. It comprised 46 four-gap glass RPCs covering an area of 8 m 2 . The design of the RPCs, their operation, intrinsic properties, and system performance are described. The intrinsic time resolution of the RPCs is 127 ps leading to a system time-of-flight resolution of 175 ps. It is argued that gross differences between pion and proton timing in multi-gap timing RPCs, reported recently in the literature, do not exist.

The HARP spectrometer that took data at the CERN Proton Synchrotron in 2001 and 2002 had as large-angle detector system a Time Projection Chamber (TPC) surrounded by Resistive Plate Chambers. The design of the TPC, experience with its operation, and its good physics performance are described. The successful recovery from track distortions arising from inhomogeneities of the electric and magnetic fields in the TPC volume is discussed.

Abstract

International audience; This paper is a review of recent progress of RD53 Collaboration. Results obtained onthe study of the radiation effects on 65 nm CMOS have matured enough to define first strategies toadopt in the design of analog and digital circuits. Critical building blocks and analog very frontend chains have been designed, tested before and after 5–800 Mrad. Small prototypes of 64 64pixels with complex digital architectures have been produced, and point to address the main issuesof dealing with extremely high pixel rates, while operating at very small in-time thresholds in theanalog front end. The collaboration is now proceeding at full speed towards the design of a largescale prototype, called RD53A, in 65 nm CMOS technology

A time-of-flight system based on 46 multigap glass resistive plate chambers has operated for 2 years in the HARP experiment at the CERN PS. The system covers an area of 10m(2) and comprises 368 readout channels. Abstract

The decays W --> ev and Z --> e+e- are studied in ppBAR collisions at square-root s = 630 GeV. The products of production cross section and branching ratio are measured as sigma(W)e = 682 +/- 12 +/- 40 pb and sigma(Z)e = 65.6 +/- 4.0 +/- 3.8 pb. The results are in good agreement with O (alpha(s)2) calculations of the production cross sections. Many systematic effects cancel in the ratio, R = 10.4 +/- 0.6(0.7) +/- 0.3, which can be used to give an indirect measurement of the total width of the W boson: GAMMA(W) = 2.10 +/- 0.13 +/- 0.09 GeV. The width gives a limit on the top quark mass, m(top) > 53 GeV (95% CL), which is independent of the top decay mode.

Abstract

Results on the cross section for the production of electron pairs in ppBAR collisions at square-root s = 630 GeV are presented. The measured value is sigma = 405 +/- 51 (syst.) +/- 84 (syst.) pb, in the invariant mass interval 10 < m < 70 GeV. The results are compared to recent theoretical calculations which include O(alpha(s)2) QCD contributions. The comparison of these data with those of lower energy experiments show approximate scaling as a function of the variable square-root tau = m/ square-root s.

Abstract

We report on a direct search in NOMAD for a new 33.9 MeV/c^2 neutral particle (X) produced in pion decay in flight, pi-->mu_X followed by the decay X -->nu e^+e^-. Both decays are postulated to occur to explain the time anomaly observed by the KARMEN experiment. From the analysis of the data collected during the 1996?1998 runs with 4.1×10^19 protons on target, a single candidate event consistent with background expectations was found. The search is sensitive to a pion branching ratio BR(pi-->muX >3.7×10^-15, significantly smaller than previous experimental limits.

Abstract

Results from the nu_tau appearance search in a neutrino beam using the full NOMAD data sample are reported. A new analysis unifies all the hadronic tau decays, significantly improving the overall sensitivity of the experiment to oscillations. The "blind analysis" of all topologies yields no evidence for an oscillation signal. In the two-family oscillation scenario, this sets a 90% C.L. allowed region in the sin^2(2theta)-Delta m^2 plane which includes sin^2(2theta) nu_tau oscillation hypothesis results in sin^2(2theta)

Abstract

Backward proton and $\pi^-$ production has been studied in $\nu_{\mu}CC$ interactions with carbon nuclei. Detailed analyses of the momentum distributions, of the production rates, and of the general features of events with a backward going particle, have been carried out in order to understand the mechanism producing these particles. The backward proton data have been compared with the predictions of the reinteraction and the short range correlation models.

Abstract

The Λ polarization in νμ charged current interactions has been measured in the NOMAD experiment. The event sample (8087 reconstructed Λ 's) is more than an order of magnitude larger than that of previous bubble chamber experiments, while the quality of event reconstruction is comparable. We observe negative polarization along the W -boson direction which is enhanced in the target fragmentation region: Px(xF 0)=−0.09±0.06(stat)±0.03(sys) . These results provide a test of different models describing the nucleon spin composition and the spin transfer mechanisms. A significant transverse polarization (in the direction orthogonal to the Λ production plane) has been observed for the first time in a neutrino experiment: Py=−0.22±0.03(stat)±0.01(sys) . The dependence of the absolute value of Py on the Λ transverse momentum with respect to the hadronic jet direction is in qualitative agreement with the results from unpolarized hadron–hadron experiments.

Abstract

The $\Lambda$ polarization in $\nu_\mu$ charged current interactions has been measured in the NOMAD experiment. The event sample (8087 reconstructed $\Lambda$'s) is more than an order of magnitude larger than that of previous bubble chamber experiments, while the quality of event reconstruction is comparable. We observe negative polarization along the $W$-boson direction which is enhanced in the target fragmentation region: $P_x (x_F 0) = -0.21 \pm 0.04 \mbox{(stat)} \pm 0.02 \mbox{(sys)}$. In the current fragmentation region we find $P_x (x_F 0) = -0.09 \pm 0.06 \mbox{(stat)} \pm 0.03 \mbox{(sys)}$. These results provide a test of different models describing the nucleon spin composition and the spin transfer mechanisms. Abstract

In the context of a two-flavour approximation we reinterpret the published NOMAD limit on ν μ → ν τ oscillations in terms of ν e → ν τ oscillations. At 90% C.L. we obtain sin 2 2θ eτ 5.2×10 −2 for large Δm 2 , while for sin 2 2 θ eτ =1 the confidence region includes Δm 2 2 / c 4 .

Abstract

With additional data and improved algorithms, we have enhanced the sensitivity of our appearance search for $\numunutau$ oscillations in the NOMAD detector in the CERN-SPS wide-band neutrino beam. The search uses kinematic criteria to identify $\nutau$ charged current interactions followed by decay of the $\tau^-$ to one of several decay modes. Our ``blind'' analyses of deep-inelastic scattering data taken in 1996 and 1997, combined with consistent reanalyses of previously reported 1995 data, yield no oscillation signal. For the two-family oscillation scenario, we present the contour outlining a 90\% C.L. confidence region in the $\sin^22\theta_{\mu \tau} - \Delta m^2$ plane. At large $\Delta m^2$, the confidence region includes $\sin^22\theta_{\mu\tau}\ \ 1.2\times10^{-3}$ (a limit 3.5 times more stringent than in our previous publication), while at $\sin^22\theta_{\mu \tau}=1$, the confidence region includes $\Delta m^2 1.2$ eV$^2$/$c^4$.

Abstract

By focusing on the notion of electronic document, we differentiate two evolutions which are useful to distinct titles: on the one hand are the documents, which have value of reference. Its administrator will take care to preserve its integrity and its context of production which is strongly significant. On the other hand are resources, evolutionary elements by nature, which the user must be able to appropriate and who must thus be placed at the disposal so that the production is erased, to focus on a logic of exploitation and service.

Abstract

NOMAD is a neutrino oscillation experiment designed to search for ντ appearance in the CERN-SPS wide band νμ beam. Signal detection relies on the identification of ντ charged current interactions using kinematic criteria. The analysis of the 1995 data sample yields no oscillation signal. Combining all studied τ decay modes, a limit of sin 2 2θ μτ 4.2×10 −3 is obtained for large Δm2 at the 90% confidence level.

Abstract

We present our new measurement of the cross-section for charm dimuon production in neutrino iron interactions based upon the full statistics collected by the NOMAD experiment. After background subtraction we observe 15 344 charm dimuon events, providing the largest sample currently available. The analysis exploits the large inclusive charged current sample - about 9 x 10(6) events after all analysis cuts - and the high resolution NOMAD detector to constrain the total systematic uncertainty on the ratio of charm dimuon to inclusive Charged Current (CC) cross-sections to similar to 2%. We also perform a fit to the NOMAD data to extract the charm production parameters and the strange quark sea content of the nucleon within the NLO QCD approximation. We obtain a value of m(c)(m(c)) = 1.159 +/- 0.075 GeV/c(2) for the running mass of the charm quark in the (MS) over bar scheme and a strange quark sea suppression factor of kappa(s) = 0.591 +/- 0.019 at Q(2) = 20 GeV2/c(2)., We extend our grateful appreciations to the CERN SPS staff for the magnificent performance of the neutrino beam. Abstract

De novo germline variants in several components of the SWI/SNF-like BAF complex can cause Coffin-Siris syndrome (CSS), Nicolaides-Baraitser syndrome (NCBRS), and nonsyndromic intellectual disability. We screened 63 patients with a clinical diagnosis of CSS for these genes (ARID1A, ARID1B, SMARCA2, SMARCA4, SMARCB1, and SMARCE1) and identified pathogenic variants in 45 (71%) patients. We found a high proportion of variants in ARID1B (68%). All four pathogenic variants in ARID1A appeared to be mosaic. By using all variants from the Exome Variant Server as test data, we were able to classify variants in ARID1A, ARID1B, and SMARCB1 reliably as being pathogenic or nonpathogenic. For SMARCA2, SMARCA4, and SMARCE1 several variants in the EVS remained unclassified, underlining the importance of parental testing. We have entered all variant and clinical information in LOVD-powered databases to facilitate further genotype-phenotype correlations, as these will become increasingly important because of the uptake of targeted and untargeted next generation sequencing in diagnostics. The emerging phenotype-genotype correlation is that SMARCB1 patients have the most marked physical phenotype and severe cognitive and growth delay. The variability in phenotype seems most marked in ARID1A and ARID1B patients. Distal limbs anomalies are most marked in ARID1A patients and least in SMARCB1 patients. Abstract

We present a search for neutrino induced events containing a single, exclusive photon using data from the NOMAD experiment at the CERN SPS where the average energy of the neutrino flux is ≃25 GeV. The search is motivated by an excess of electron-like events in the 200-475 MeV energy region as reported by the MiniBooNE experiment. In NOMAD, photons are identified via their conversion to e + e - in an active target embedded in a magnetic field. The background to the single photon signal is dominated by the asymmetric decay of neutral pions produced either in a coherent neutrino-nucleus interaction, or in a neutrino-nucleon neutral current deep inelastic scattering, or in an interaction occurring outside the fiducial volume. All three backgrounds are determined in situ using control data samples prior to opening the 'signal-box'. In the signal region, we observe 155 events with a predicted background of 129.2±8.5±3.3. We interpret this as null evidence for excess of single photon events, and set a limit. Assuming that the hypothetical single photon has a momentum distribution similar to that of a photon from the coherent π 0 decay, the measurement yields an upper limit on single photon events, Physics Letters B, 706 (4-5), ISSN:0370-2693, ISSN:0031-9163, ISSN:1873-2445

Abstract

A report is given of the experimental studies on lead/fibre calorimetry of the RD1 research and development project. To match the LHC physics requirements for a highly segmented and accurate electromagnetic energy measurement and for an acceptable hadronic performance, the 1992 RD1 program opted for longitudinally segmented calorimeter prototypes. The electromagnetic prototypes comprised 4 × 4 cm 2 cells with a high sampling fraction of 1.8:1. Coarse hadronic prototypes were constructed using 1 mm fibres inserted in 3 mm diameter plastic tubes. The production procedures are discussed and test beam results are presented. Reports are also given on calibration studies, on radiation hardness studies and on the development and tests of new light detectors.

Abstract

A measurement of the gluon structure fusion using direct photon events observed with the UA2 detector in p p collisions at √ s =630 GeV is presented. The x -range covered by this analysis is between 0.049 and 0.207 and the Q 2 range is between 280 GeV 2 and 3670 GeV 2 . The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 7.14 pb −1 . The results are found to be in good agreement with the gluon distributions measured in deep inelastic scattering experiments extrapolated to the UA2 Q 2 values.

Abstract

The lateral profile of the energy deposition in a prototype of a lead and scintillating fiber calorimeter, constructed in the framework of the LAA project at CERN, has been measured for both electromagnetic and hadronic showers in the energy range from 5 to 150 GeV. The distributions are well described by analytic functions whose parameters allow one to determine the radial scaling of the shower development. In the electromagnetic case, the data are compared to Monte Carlo calculations. Estimates of the lateral leakage outside of the detector are made as well as calculations of the average π 0 content of hadronic showers and event-to-event fluctuations in this electromagnetic component. A method is developed whereby knowledge of the hadronic shower profile can be used to determine the relative calibration constants of neighboring towers in such a calorimeter.

The process pp→evγ+X is studied as √s=630 GeV. The observed signal is used to extract a direct measurement of the parameters κ and λ which define the magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole moments of the W boson and therefore the WWγ coupling. We find κ=1+2.6−2.2 and λ=0+1.7−1.8 and their 95% confidence limits −3.5

Abstract

A search has been made for scalar leptoquark pair production with the upgraded UA2 detector at the CERN p p Collider at √s = 630 GeV, investigating decays of the leptoquark into a quark and either an electron or an electron neutrino. From an event sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 13 pb−1 a lower limit has been determined for the mass of first generation leptoquarks, yielding 67 GeV (95% CL) for a scalar leptoquark decaying with a 50% branching ratio into a quark and an electron.

Abstract

We present a study of exclusive neutral pion production in neutrino-nucleus Neutral Current interactions using data from the NOMAD experiment at the CERN SPS. The data correspond to $1.44 \times 10^6$ muon-neutrino Charged Current interactions in the energy range $2.5 \leq E_{\nu} \leq 300$ GeV. Neutrino events with only one visible $\pi^0$ in the final state are expected to result from two Neutral Current processes: coherent $\pi^0$ production, {\boldmath $\nu + {\cal A} \to \nu + {\cal A} + \pi^0$} and single $\pi^0$ production in neutrino-nucleon scattering. The signature of coherent $\pi^0$ production is an emergent $\pi^0$ almost collinear with the incident neutrino while $\pi^0$'s produced in neutrino-nucleon deep inelastic scattering have larger transverse momenta. In this analysis all relevant backgrounds to the coherent $\pi^0$ production signal are measured using data themselves. Having determined the backgrounds, and using the Rein-Sehgal model for the coherent $\pi^0$ production to compute the detection efficiency, we obtain {\boldmath $4630 \pm 522 (stat) \pm 426 (syst)$} corrected coherent-$\pi^0$ events with $E_{\pi^0} \geq 0.5$ GeV. We measure {\boldmath $\sigma (\nu {\cal A} \to \nu {\cal A} \pi^0) = [ 72.6 \pm 8.1(stat) \pm 6.9(syst) ] \times 10^{-40} cm^2/nucleus$}. Abstract

We have studied the muon neutrino and antineutrino quasi-elastic (QEL) scattering reactions ($\nu_\mu n\to \mu^- p$ and $\bar{\nu}_\mu p\to \mu^+ n$) using a set of experimental data collected by the NOMAD collaboration. We have performed measurements of the cross-section of these processes on a nuclear target (mainly Carbon) normalizing it to the total $\nu_\mu$ ($\bar{\nu}_\mu$) charged current cross-section. The results for the flux averaged QEL cross-sections in the (anti)neutrino energy interval 3-100 GeV are $\sigma^{qel}_{\nu_\mu} = (0.92 \pm 0.02 (stat) \pm 0.06 (syst))\times 10^{-38} \cm^2$ and $\sigma{qel}_{\bar{\nu}_\mu} = (0.81 \pm 0.05 (stat) \pm 0.08 (syst))\times 10^{-38} \cm^2$ for neutrino and antineutrino, respectively. The axial mass parameter $M_A$ was extracted from the measured quasi-elastic neutrino cross-section. The corresponding result is $M_A = 1.05 \pm 0.02 (stat) \pm 0.06 (syst) GeV$. It is consistent with the axial mass values recalculated from the antineutrino cross-section and extracted from the pure $Q^2$ shape analysis of the high purity sample of $\nu_\mu$ quasi-elastic 2-track events, but has smaller systematic error and should be quoted as the main result of this work. Our measured $M_A$ is found to be in good agreement with the world average value obtained in previous deuterium filled bubble chamber experiments. The NOMAD measurement of $M_A$ is lower than those recently published by K2K and MiniBooNE collaborations. However, within the large errors quoted by these experiments on $M_A$, these results are compatible with the more precise NOMAD value., Comment: 26 pages, 18 figures, submitted to Eur.Phys.J.C

Abstract

The large sample of W→eν events collected by the UA2 experiment at the CERN pp collider between 1988 and 1990 has been used to determine the strong coupling constant α s . From a measurement of the ratio of the production rate of W events with one jet to that with no jets, α s has been extracted to second order in the MS scheme: α s (M 2 w )=0.123±0.0.18( stat .)±0.017 ( syst .) .

Abstract

The ratio of branching fractions of theW decaying to τ ande leptons is measured using $$\bar pp$$ collisions at $$\sqrt s = 630$$ GeV. The ratio of the electroweak charged current couplings to theW is then determined to beg /g =0.997±0.056 (stat.)±0.042 (syst.). The decay modeZ→τ+→τ+ is observed and also found to be consistent withe-τ universality.

Abstract

A study of the two-jet mass spectrum measured with the UA 2 calorimeter has revealed a signal from hadronic decays ofW andZ bosons above a large background. Production and decay properties of the signal have been measured. The combined production cross-section σ·B(W, Z → two jets) is 9.6±2.3 (stat.)±1.1 (syst.) nb, compared with an expectation of 5.8 nb calculated to order αs2. A limit on the production cross-section of additional heavy vector bosons decaying into two jets is given as a function of the boson mass.

Abstract

This paper reports on the charged pion production yields measured by the SPY/NA56 experiment for 450 GeV/c proton interactions on beryllium targets. The present data cover a secondary momentum range from 7 GeV/c to 135 GeV/c in the forward direction. An experimental accuracy ranging from 5 to 10\%, depending on the beam momentum, has been achieved, limited mainly by the knowledge of the beam acceptance. These results will be relevant in the calculation of neutrino fluxes in present and future neutrino beams.

Abstract

We present a measurement of the muon neutrino–nucleon inclusive charged current cross section, off an isoscalar target, in the neutrino energy range 2.5 ⩽ E ν ⩽ 40 GeV . The significance of this measurement is its precision, ±4% in 2.5 ⩽ E ν ⩽ 10 GeV , and ±2.6% in 10 ⩽ E ν ⩽ 40 GeV regions, where significant uncertainties in previous experiments still exist, and its importance to the current and proposed long baseline neutrino oscillation experiments.

Abstract

The transverse momentum distributions ofW andZ bosons produced in\(\bar pp\) collisions at\(\sqrt s = 630 GeV\) are examined. Comparisons are made with QCD predictions, and good agreement is found. The fraction ofW bosons produced withpT>25 GeV is found to be 3.8±0.6(stat)−1.3+0.9(syst)%.
