1. Projected future changes in the cryosphere and hydrology of a mountainous catchment in the upper Heihe River, China

Abstract

Climate warming exacerbates the degradation of the mountain cryosphere, including glacier retreat, permafrost degradation, and snow cover reduction. These changes dramatically alter the local and downstream hydrological regime, posing significant threats to basin-scale water resource management and sustainable development. However, this issue is still not adequately addressed, particularly in mountainous catchments. We developed an integrated cryospheric–hydrologic model, the FLEX-Cryo model, to comprehensively consider glaciers, snow cover, and frozen soil and their dynamic impacts on hydrological processes. Taking the mountainous Hulu catchment located in the upper Heihe River of China as a case study, we utilized the state-of-the-art climate change projection data under two scenarios (SSP2-4.5 and SSP5-8.5) from the sixth phase of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6) to simulate the future changes in the mountainous cryosphere and their impacts on hydrology. Our findings showed that under the medium-emission scenario (SSP2-4.5) and high-emission scenario (SSP5-8.5), by the end of the 21st century, the glacier will completely melt out around the years 2051 and 2045, respectively. The annual maximum snow water equivalent is projected to decrease by 41.4 % and 46.0 %, while the duration of snow cover will be reduced by approximately 45 and 70 d. The freeze onset of seasonally frozen soil is expected to be delayed by 10 and 22 d, while the thaw onset of permafrost is likely to advance by 19 and 32 d. Moreover, the maximum freeze depth of seasonally frozen soil is projected to decrease by 5.2 and 10.9 cm per decade, and the depth of the active layer will increase by 8.2 and 15.5 cm per decade. Regarding hydrology, catchment total runoff exhibits a decreasing trend, and the tipping point of glacier runoff occurs approximately between 2019 and 2021. Permafrost degradation will likely reduce the duration of low runoff in the early thawing season; the discontinuous baseflow recession gradually transitions into linear recessions, and the baseflow increases. Our results highlight the significant changes expected in the mountainous cryosphere and hydrology in the future. These findings enhance our understanding of cold-region hydrological processes and have the potential to assist local and downstream water resource management in addressing the challenges posed by climate change.

Abstract

The emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted the health behaviors of people around the world, including their physical activity patterns. Intuitive exercise, a facet of one’s relationship with physical activity, is defined as one’s awareness, mindset (positive versus negative), and mindfulness when engaged in movement. The study’s purpose was to explore whether self-reported physical activity and psychological mindsets around exercise changed during the pandemic. College students (n = 216) described their relationship with exercise before and during the pandemic through anonymous completion of the Intuitive Exercise Scale (IEXS) and open-ended questions to provide in-depth contextualized responses about exercise habits. Participants reported significantly higher scores on intuitive exercise during the pandemic, such as on the Body Trust subscale (M = 3.43), compared to pre-pandemic levels (M = 3.20), p < 0.001. Moreover, varied themes related to physical activity were uncovered such as exercising for fun, exercise influenced by emotion, and loss of motivation to exercise. Important takeaways of the study include the diversity of responses to the pandemic (i.e., some participants reported an increase in physical activity levels and more positive exercise attitudes while others experienced the opposite), the need to promote self-care, and the need for positive coping strategies.

Abstract

Although lithium is widely used in current practice to treat bipolar disorder (BD) and treatment-resistant major depressive disorder (MDD) among older adults, little is known about its efficacy and tolerability in this population, which is generally excluded from randomized clinical trials. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of long-term use of lithium among older adults with BD and MDD.Data from the Cohort of individuals with Schizophrenia and mood disorders Aged 55 years or more (CSA) were used. Two groups of patients with BD and MDD were compared: those who were currently receiving lithium versus those who were not. The effects of lithium on psychiatric (i.e., depressive symptoms severity, perceived clinical severity, rates of psychiatric admissions in the past-year), geriatric (overall and cognitive functioning) and physical outcomes (i.e., rates of non-psychiatric medical comorbidities and general hospital admissions in the past-year) were evaluated. All analyses were adjusted for age, sex, duration of disorder, diagnosis, smoking status, alcohol use, and use of antipsychotics, antiepileptics or antidepressants.Among the 281 older participants with BD or MDD, 15.7% were taking lithium for a mean duration of 12.5(SD = 11.6) years. Lithium use was associated with lower intensity of depressive symptoms, reduced perceived clinical global severity and lower benzodiazepine use (all p 0.05), without being linked to greater rates of medical comorbidities, except for hypothyroidism.Data were cross-sectional and data on lifetime history of psychotropic medications was not assessed.Our results suggest that long-term lithium use may be efficient and relatively well-tolerated in older adults with BD or treatment-resistant MDD.

Abstract

International audience; Objective: In addition to heredity, exposure to early-life adversity is an important predisposing risk factor of suicidal behaviour. Although the association between Childhood Trauma (CT) and suicide risk is well documented, interactions between CT and suicidal behaviour in Treatment-Resistant Depression (TRD) populations have received little coverage. This study aimed to evaluate i) association between CT and suicidal behaviour in a TRD population, and ii) the role of personality traits and impulsiveness as potential factors of mediation in these associations.Methods: Patients were recruited from a cohort of the French network of TRD expert centers. Depressive symptom severity, CT, suicidal behaviour, personality traits, and impulsiveness were assessed with the Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS), the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), the Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale (CSSRS), the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV, the Big Five Inventory, and the Barratt Impulsivness Scale (BIS) respectively.Results: Among the 256 patients with a baseline CTQ, in relation to suicide risk for the current depressive episode, we found an association with the total CTQ scores mediated by the intensity of the current episode in a model adjusted for age and sex (total effect: β = 0.171; p = 0.011, direct effect: β = 0.135; p = 0.043; indirect effect: β = 0.036; p = 0.048). Focusing on CT subtypes, we detected an association between suicide risk and physical neglect in a model adjusted for age and sex (β = 0.301; p = 0.002), without any mediation by the intensity of the current episode. There was no mediation effect from personality traits nor impulsiveness. With regards to CSSRS to assess suicidal ideation, we did not find any association with the total CTQ score and CT subtype scores.Conclusion: We report a strong association between suicidal behaviour and CT (in particular childhood physical neglect) in a TRD population.

Abstract

International audience; BACKGROUND: Findings from efficacy trials of group psychoeducation (PE) for bipolar disorders (BD) led to its inclusion in evidence-based guidelines as a first-line mandatory treatment. However, pragmatic trials and observational studies are needed to determine its real-world effectiveness, impact on outcomes deemed important to patients and to clarify potential mediators of any benefits. METHODS: Individuals with BD were offered the opportunity to participate in 20h of PE and asked to complete pre- and post-intervention ratings of symptoms, knowledge about BD, medication adherence, and illness perception. A priori, two key patient outcomes were identified (social functioning and self-esteem); sample attrition due to dropout or relapse was recorded. RESULTS: Of 156 individuals who completed the pre-PE assessments, 103 completed the program and post-PE assessments. Only 4 of 53 dropouts were associated with BD relapse. Post-intervention, the PE completers demonstrated a statistically significant improvement in social functioning (p = 0.003, Effect Size (ES) = 0.26) and a trend towards improved self-esteem (ES = 0.14). Whilst there were significant changes in medication adherence (p = 0.002, ES = 0.28), knowledge of BD (p < 0.001, ES = 1.20), and illness perception (p < 0.001, ES = -0.37), mediational analysis demonstrated that only change in illness perception was associated to change in functioning (p=0.03) with no contribution from changes in knowledge of BD or medication adherence. CONCLUSIONS: In real-world settings, over 60% individuals completed 10-session course of PE. After controlling for demography and baseline clinical state, change in illness perception, rather than change in knowledge or medication adherence, emerged as a potential mediator of some benefits of PE.

Abstract

Little is known about the respective effects of depression and cognitive impairment on quality of life among older adults with schizophrenia spectrum disorder.We used data from the Cohort of individuals with Schizophrenia Aged 55-years or more (CSA) study, a large multicenter sample of older adults with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder (N = 353). Quality of life (QoL), depression and cognitive impairment were assessed using the Quality of Life Scale (QLS), the Center of Epidemiologic Studies Depression scale and the Mini-Mental State Examination, respectively. We used structural equation modeling to examine the shared and specific effects of depression and cognitive impairment on QoL, while adjusting for sociodemographic characteristics, general medical conditions, psychotropic medications and the duration of the disorder.Depression and cognitive impairment were positively associated (r = 0.24, p 0.01) and both independently and negatively impacted on QoL (standardized β = -0.41 and β = -0.32, both p 0.01) and on each QLS quality-of-life domains, except for depression on instrumental role and cognitive impairment on interpersonal relations in the sensitivity analyses excluding respondents with any missing data. Effects of depression and cognitive impairment on QoL were not due to specific depressive symptoms or specific cognitive domains, but rather mediated through two broad dimensions representing the shared effects across all depressive symptoms and all cognitive deficits, respectively.Because of the cross-sectional design of this study, measures of association do not imply causal associations.Mechanisms underlying these two broad dimensions should be considered as important potential targets to improve quality of life of this vulnerable population.

Abstract

Barong cave, located in West Java, Indonesia, is one of the caves within the cultural heritage site of Pawon cave, which has the potential to have been a human settlement based on the artifacts found there. However, the site has faced challenges such as vandalism, lack of proper management and preservation efforts, and the negative impacts of limestone mining. Terrestrial Laser Scanner (TLS) have gained attention as a tool for cave measurement and documentation, but there is limited research on their use for cultural heritage preservation in Indonesian caves. This study focuses on documenting and creating a 3D model of Barong cave using TLS, with a specific exploration of the intensity values of point cloud data obtained from TLS near-infrared wave. Data acquisition was successfully carried out, resulting in detailed digital models of the cave. Although manual identification of vandalism using TLS was limited, our study demonstrated the potential of TLS as a tool for identifying vandalism in caves. Further research, including the development of augmented reality and virtual reality applications for museums and education, and automated identification of markings on 3D point cloud data using intensity values for cave art, requires further development.

Abstract

It is well known that the standard doses of a given drug may not have equivalent effects in all patients. To date, the management of depression remains mainly empirical and often poorly evaluated. The development of a personalized medicine in psychiatry may reduce treatment failure, intolerance or resistance, and hence the burden and costs of mood depressive disorders. The Geneva Cocktail Phenotypic approach presents several advantages including the “in vivo” measure of different cytochromes and transporter P-gp activities, their simultaneous determination in a single test, avoiding the influence of variability over time on phenotyping results, the administration of low dose substrates, a limited sampling strategy with an analytical method developed on DBS analysis. The goal of this project is to explore the relationship between the activity of drug-metabolizing enzymes (DME), assessed by a phenotypic approach, and the concentrations of Venlafaxine (VLX) + O-demethyl-venlafaxine (ODV), the efficacy and tolerance of VLX. This study is a multicentre prospective non-randomized open trial. Eligible patients present a major depressive episode, MADRS over or equal to 20, treatment with VLX regardless of the dose during at least 4 weeks. The Phenotype Visit includes VLX and ODV concentration measurement. Following the oral absorption of low doses of omeprazole, midazolam, dextromethorphan, and fexofenadine, drug metabolizing enzymes activity is assessed by specific metabolite/probe concentration ratios from a sample taken 2 h after cocktail administration for CYP2C19, CYP3A4, CYP2D6; and by the determination of the limited area under the curve from the capillary blood samples taken 2–3 and 6 h after cocktail administration for CYP2C19 and P-gp. Two follow-up visits will take place between 25 and 40 days and 50–70 days after inclusion. They include assessment of efficacy, tolerance and observance. Eleven french centres are involved in recruitment, expected to be completed within approximately 2 years with 205 patients. Metabolic ratios are determined in Geneva, Switzerland. By showing an association between drug metabolism and VLX concentrations, efficacy and tolerance, there is a hope that testing drug metabolism pathways with a phenotypical approach would help physicians in selecting and dosing antidepressants. The MARVEL study will provide an important contribution to increasing the knowledge of VLX variability and in optimizing the use of methods of personalized therapy in psychiatric settings. Abstract

The application of Apple LiDAR is now being researched in a variety of fields. Several research projects have been conducted to provide an answer, including those focused on heritage documentation, forest inventory, and geoscience applications. In cave, it is common practice to photograph with a digital camera equipped with photogrammetric techniques and a terrestrial laser scanner. The focus of this study is on how the iPad Pro M1 2021 can generate a point cloud that describes the graffiti on the cave walls. This investigation was carried out in Barong Cave, West Java, Indonesia. Scanning with iPad Pro M1 2021 was completed using three applications: 3D Scanner App, EveryPoint, and SiteScape. Point cloud of each application is analyzed using M3C2 plugin in CloudCompare. Based on this research, SiteScape is the best application to use. It can be concluded that the LiDAR iPad is suitable for use in caves and can capture detailed information about cave walls.

Abstract

Ecosystems in arid areas are fragile and are easily disturbed by various natural and human factors. As natural tracers widely exist in nature, stable isotopes can be valuable for studying environmental change and the water cycle. From 2015 to 2020, we took the Shiyang River basin, which has the highest utilization rate of water resources and the most prominent contradiction of water use, as a typical demonstration basin to establish and improve the isotope hydrology observation system. The data in the observation system are classified by water type (precipitation, river water, lake water, groundwater, soil water, and plant water). Six observation systems with stable isotopes as the main observation elements have been built. These include river source region, oasis region, reservoir channel system region, oasis farmland region, ecological engineering construction region, and salinization process region; meteorological and hydrological data have also been collected. We will gradually improve the various observation systems, increase the data of observation sites, and update the data set yearly. We can use these data to research the continental river basin ecological hydrology, such as surface water evaporation loss, landscape river water cycle impact of the dam, dam water retention time, oasis farmland irrigation methods, and the atmosphere, such as the contribution of inland water circulation to inland river precipitation, climate transformation, below-cloud evaporation effect, and extreme climate events, which provides a scientific basis for water resources utilization and ecological environment restoration in the arid area. 12. Evaporation, infiltration and storage of soil water in different vegetation zones in the Qilian Mountains: a stable isotope perspective

The processes of water storage have not been fully understood in different vegetation zones of mountainous areas, which is the main obstacle to further understanding hydrological processes and improving water resource assessments. To further understand the process of soil water movement in different vegetation zones (alpine meadow (AM), coniferous forest (CF), mountain grassland (MG) and deciduous forest (DF)) of mountainous areas, this study monitored the temporal and spatial dynamics of hydrogen- and oxygen-stable isotopes in the precipitation and soil water of the Xiying River basin. The results show that the order of soil water evaporation intensities in the four vegetation zones was MG (SWLslop: 3.4) > DF (SWLslop: 4.1) > CF (SWLslop: 4.7) > AM (SWLslop: 6.4). The soil water in the AM and CF evaporated from only the topsoil, and the rainfall input was fully mixed with each layer of soil. The evaporation signals of the MG and DF could penetrate deep into the middle and lower layers of the soil as precipitation quickly flowed into the deep soil through the soil matrix. Each vegetation zone's water storage capacity of the 0–40 cm soil layer followed the order of AM (46.9 mm) > DF (33.0 mm) > CF (32.1 mm) > MG (20.3 mm). In addition, the 0–10 cm soil layer has the smallest soil water storage capacity (AM: 43.0 mm; CF: 28.0 mm; MG: 17.5 mm; DF: 29.1 mm). This work will provide a new reference for understanding soil hydrology in arid headwater areas.

Abstract

An accurate treatment of first episodes in schizophrenia and bipolar disorders has a significant impact on compliance and prognosis. However, existing therapeutic guidelines may be poorly respected and may concern only typical clinical situations. Medical attitudes in clinical practice have been collected and structured on the basis of small interactive meetings (Focus Group [FG]), and a synthesis of practical attitudes has been compared with updated guidelines. The FG method applied to treatment initiation in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder is seen as complementary to evidence-based guidelines. It reveals that, in a reflexive manner, clinical attitudes are often more diverse and frequently consider first treatments after global evaluation, taking more into account external factors such as clinicians' experience, patient's history and willingness, clinical setting, and environment. A symptomatic approach is sometimes preferred, and a better alliance is always considered as a main objective. The FG method could be a supplementary support to continuous medical education.

Objectives: To compare patients with and without a history of suicidal attempts in a large cohort of patients with bipolar disorder and to identify variables that are associated with suicidal behavior. Methods: European Mania in Bipolar Longitudinal Evaluation of Medication (EMBLEM) is a two-year, prospective, observational study that enrolled 3,684 adult patients with bipolar disorder and initiated or changed oral treatment for an acute manic/mixed episode. Of those, 2,416 patients were eligible for the two-year follow-up. Only baseline characteristics were studied in the present study, included sociodemographic data, psychiatric history and comorbidities, history of suicide attempts, history of substance use problems, compliance with treatment, inpatient admissions, and functional status. Symptom severity was assessed using the Clinical Global Impression-Bipolar Disorder (CGI-BP) scale, the Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS), and the 5-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD-5). A logistic regression model identified baseline variables independently associated with a history of suicidal behavior. Results: Of the 2,219 patients who provided data on their lifetime history of suicide attempts, 663 (29.9%) had a history of suicidal behavior (at least one attempt). Baseline factors associated with a history of suicidal behavior included female gender, a history of alcohol abuse, a history of substance abuse, young age at first treatment for a mood episode, longer disease duration, greater depressive symptom severity (HAMD-5 total score), current benzodiazepine use, higher overall symptom severity (CGI-BP: mania and overall score), and poor compliance. Resume Il n’y a pas de consensus entre les professionnels de sante sur la prise en charge de l’anorexie mentale du jeune patient. Neanmoins, un groupe d’experts britanniques (NICE, 2004), s’appuyant sur les resultats d’etudes controlees, a propose certaines recommandations therapeutiques. La prise en charge mise en œuvre dans le service de psychopathologie de l’enfant et de l’adolescent de l’hopital Robert-Debre (Paris) s’appuie sur ces recommandations. Elle repose une strategie pluridisciplinaire prenant en compte la dimension medicale, la dimension nutritionnelle et la dimension psychologique du trouble. Parmi les modalites therapeutiques pratiques appliquees dans le service, la restauration ponderale, la psychotherapie familiale et l’absence de separation systematique avec la famille en sont les principales. Elles prennent en compte les specificites de ces patients, tres jeunes, que sont la necessite de maintenir le lien avec les proches ainsi que la poursuite de la croissance staturale, conditionnee par la restauration ponderale. Les soins s’organisent prioritairement et initialement en ambulatoire mais peuvent deboucher sur une hospitalisation. Cette prise en charge s’inscrit dans la duree et necessite la mise en place d’un suivi ambulatoire soutenu a l’issu de l’hospitalisation, impliquant le medecin traitant et un psychiatre de ville.

Abstract

Understanding the differences and control factors of stable water isotopes in the soil–plant–atmosphere continuum (SPAC) of different vegetation zones is of great significance in revealing hydrological processes and regional water cycle mechanisms. From April 2018 to October 2019, we collected 1281 samples to investigated the stable water isotopes' changes in the SPAC of three different vegetation zones (alpine meadows, forests, and arid foothills) in the Shiyang River basin. The results show the following: (1) precipitation plays a major control role in the SPAC. From alpine meadows to arid foothills, the temperature effect of precipitation isotopes increases as altitude decreases. (2) From the alpine meadow to the arid foothills, soil water isotopes are gradually enriched. (3) Alpine meadow plants are mainly supplied by precipitation in the rainy season, and forest plants mainly utilize soil water in the dry season and precipitation in the rainy season. The soil water in the arid foothills is primarily recharged by groundwater, and the evaporation of plant isotopes is strong. (4) Temperature and altitude are potential factors that control the isotopic composition of the SPAC. This research will help in understanding of the SPAC system's water cycle at different altitudes and climates in high mountains.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: We set out to evaluate the prognostic factors in cervical adenocarcinoma metastatic to lymph nodes. STUDY DESIGN: We performed a retrospective review of 40 patients with cervical adenocarcinoma and lymph node metastasis from 1976 to 1996. RESULTS: Thirty-four patients had adenocarcinoma, and six had adenosquamous carcinoma. Median survival was 50 months. The median survival for patients with stage I disease was 69 months. Stage at diagnosis, treatment with radical hysterectomy, and receiving adjuvant therapy were associated with prolonged survival. A trend toward improved survival was noted with the use of concurrent radiation and chemotherapy as an adjuvant therapy. CONCLUSIONS: Adenocarcinoma metastatic to the lymph nodes does not have a uniformly poor prognosis, especially with early-stage disease. Improved survival was observed with the use of adjuvant therapy, specifically the use of combined chemotherapy and radiation after radical hysterectomy. Abstract

BackgroundThe clinical and dimensional features associated with suicidal behaviour in bipolar patients during euthymic states are not well characterised.MethodsIn a sample of 652 euthymic bipolar patients, we assessed clinical features with the Diagnostic Interview for Genetics Studies (DIGS) and dimensional characteristics with questionnaires measuring impulsivity/hostility and affective lability/intensity. Bipolar patients with and without suicidal behaviour were compared for these clinical and dimensional variables.ResultsOf the 652 subjects, 42.9% had experienced at least one suicide attempt. Lifetime history of suicidal behaviour was associated with being a woman, a history of head injury, tobacco misuse and indicators of severity of bipolar disorder including early age at onset, high number of depressive episodes, positive history of rapid cycling, alcohol misuse and social phobia. Indirect hostility and irritability were dimensional characteristics associated with suicidal behaviour in bipolar patients, whereas impulsivity and affective lability/intensity were not associated with suicidal behaviour.LimitationsThis study had a retrospective design with no replication sample.ConclusionsBipolar patients with earlier onset, mood instability (large number of depressive episodes, rapid cycling) and/or particular addictive and anxiety comorbid disorders might be at high risk of suicidal behaviour. In addition, hostility dimensions (indirect hostility and irritability), may be trait components associated with suicidal behaviour in euthymic bipolar patients.

Abstract

An accurate treatment of first episodes in schizophrenia and bipolar disorders has a significant impact on compliance and prognosis. However, existing therapeutic guidelines may be poorly respected and may concern only typical clinical situations. Medical attitudes in clinical practice have been collected and structured on the basis of small interactive meetings (Focus Group [FG]), and a synthesis of practical attitudes has been compared with updated guidelines. The FG method applied to treatment initiation in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder is seen as complementary to evidence-based guidelines. It reveals that, in a reflexive manner, clinical attitudes are often more diverse and frequently consider first treatments after global evaluation, taking more into account external factors such as clinicians' experience, patient's history and willingness, clinical setting, and environment. A symptomatic approach is sometimes preferred, and a better alliance is always considered as a main objective. The FG method could be a supplementary support to continuous medical education.

The controlled environment soil‐core microcosm unit (CESMU) methods embody a collection of techniques that began with soil sampling in the field and continued throughout the laboratory investigation of chemical fate, migration, and transformation in site‐specific soils; it was a cost‐effective investigative methodology that could be used to screen chemical materials before initiating high‐cost environmental field studies. Intact soil cores were collected in the field using a hydraulically controlled probe, delivering intact soil‐cores with minimal disturbance directly into high‐density polyethylene pipe (10.3‐cm ID). The inert polyethylene pipe was an effective hydrophobic barrier that remained an integral part of the soil‐core column, obviating subsequent transfers of soil. Abstract

There are no official guidelines for the treatment of anorexia nervosa in young patients. Some recommendations have been proposed by a group of British experts (N.I.C.E., 2004), based on results from controlled studies. Our inpatient care unit takes into account the different dimensions of anorexia nervosa in this subgroup of young patients and proposes an integrated approach including medical care, nutritional care, and psychological care, as suggested by the N.I.C.E. recommendations. We attempt to take into account variables that are unique to these young patients. More specifically, we insist on weight restoration that will permit adequate growth and we do not systematically separate the patient from his or her family. In addition, family therapy or counseling is systematically provided. The aim of this approach is to support parents, to provide psychoeducational guidance, and to help the family acquire new behaviors and new ways of understanding the eating disorder. Most patients are treated on an outpatient basis, but inpatient care is offered when the patient displays severe medical conditions or a severe comorbid psychiatric illness. Anorexia nervosa is a protracted disorder that requires multidisciplinary outpatient medical follow-up, including the intervention of a general practitioner and a psychiatric team.

Abstract

Benign cystic mesothelioma is a tumor characteristically found in women during the reproductive years. These tumors are infrequently found after castration or menopause, suggesting some degree of hormonal sensitivity. Such aspects of the tumor suggest a potential role for antiestrogens as medical management and an alternative to radical surgery. We treated a 19-year-old woman with a symptomatic pelvic mass secondary to a recurrent benign cystic mesothelioma 2 years after radical surgery with the antiestrogen tamoxifen. An initial reduction in volume and arrest of growth was followed by stabilization in size and disappearance of symptoms. Therapy was continued for 18 months with no change in the volume of the cystic structure. The patient continued to be asymptomatic. Periodic surveillance with quantitative digital radiography for bone density showed no change in bone mineral density. Serum testing for liver function studies was normal throughout treatment. This case suggests that antiestrogens may have a role in the medical management of these rare estrogen-dependent neoplasms. The initial reduction in size and arrest in growth further suggest extreme sensitivity of this tumor to manipulation of the hormonal milieu. Therapy with the antiestrogen tamoxifen in this setting may provide an option for long-term medical management in cases of symptomatic recurrent cystic mesotheliomas.

Abstract

The neuroendocrine protein secretogranin II is the precursor of several neuropeptides, including secretoneurin and a novel 66-amino acid peptide, EM66, the sequence of which has been highly conserved across the vertebrae phylum. The presence of EM66 has been detected in the adult and fetal human adrenal gland, as well as the rat pituitary and adrenal glands. The present study aimed to explore a possible neuroendocrine role of EM66 by analysing its occurrence and distribution within the jerboa hypothalamus, and its potential implication in the control of feeding behaviour. High-performance liquid chromatography analysis of jerboa hypothalamic extracts combined with a radioimmunoassay of EM66 revealed a single peak of immunoreactive material exhibiting the same retention time as recombinant EM66. Immunocytochemical labelling showed that EM66-producing neurones are widely distributed in several hypothalamic regions, including the preoptic area, the suprachiasmatic, supraoptic, parvocellular paraventricular and arcuate nuclei, and the lateral hypothalamus. Food deprivation for 5 days induced a significant increase in the number of EM66-containing neurones within the arcuate nucleus (105% increase) and the parvocellular aspect of the paraventricular nucleus (115% increase), suggesting that EM66 could be involved in the control of feeding behaviour and/or the response to stress associated with fasting. Altogether, these data reveal the physiological plasticity of the EM66 system in the hypothalamus and implicate this novel peptide in the regulation of neuroendocrine functions.

Background: Benign cystic mesothelioma, a tumor characteristically found in women during the reproductive years, is rare after bilateral oophorectomy or menopause, suggesting hormonal sensitivity. Case: We treated a 17-year-old woman with a rapidly increasing and symptomatic benign cystic mesothelioma with a long-acting GnRH agonist. A rapid and continued reduction in volume corresponded to the induction and maintenance of a hypoestrogenic state over a 6-month period. However, the subsequent addition of a combination of estrogen and progestin (known as add-back therapy) resulted in a gradual increase in cyst volume, which progressed after discontinuation of all therapy. Resumption of GnRH-analog therapy alone reduced cyst volume again, and the patient underwent surgical removal. Conclusion: Long-acting GnRH agonists may have a role in the conservative management of these rare neoplasms. The reduction in volume concomitant with a hypoestrogenic state and regrowth with addition of add-back therapy further suggest extreme sensitivity of this tumor to one or both hormones.

Abstract

Accurately assessing the impact of groundwater exploitation on land subsidence can provide scientific support for decision-makers. This article establishes a groundwater–subsidence model in a typical area using the land subsidence characteristics of Tongzhou, China, and subsequently classifies a land subsidence early warning zone based on the land subsidence rate. Results show that land subsidence occurred throughout the whole Tongzhou District. The land subsidence that developed to the west of Liuzhuang, Tongzhou city and Taihu was the most serious The maximum annual subsidence rate reached 120 mm a−1 under the current groundwater extraction conditions, and the early warning level for land subsidence reached its highest level. If the pumping of groundwater was reduced by 50 % in the second and the fourth aquifers and by 60 % in the third aquifer, the land subsidence early warning level would be largely reduced and would meet the requirements for land subsidence control.

To analyze the generation of different ground fissure disasters, two typical ground fissures were selected. With geological survey and exploration data, the spatial characteristics of the Songzhuang and Gaoliying fissures were investigated. The different occurrence factors for the Songzhuang and Gaoliying fissures were analyzed based on geological structure and groundwater. The conclusions contain are as follows. The affected body of the Songzhuang fissure exhibits obvious tensile deformation, and it is not contact with buried faults. The fracture-affected body of the Gaoliying fissure shows obvious vertical dislocation and shear, and this is compounded with buried faults. The distribution characteristic of the Songzhuang fissure was controlled by the tectonics and the normal fault, while the buried fault not only control the distribution feature of the Gaoliying fissure but also controlled its deformation characteristic. A buried fault is the geological background for the formation of the Gaoliying fissure. The long-term exploitation of groundwater has caused the horizontal deformation of the soil and the rigid rotation of stratum in the subsidence edge. Both of them are the reason for the tensile deformation. Due to the activities of buried faults and differential subsidence in small areas, the affected bodies of the Gaoliying fissure showed vertical dislocation and shear deformation.

Abstract

Pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP), a novel peptide of the secretin/glucagon/vasoactive intestinal polypeptide superfamily, has been initially characterized in mammals in 1989 and, only 2 years later, its counterpart has been isolated in amphibians. A number of studies conducted in the frog Rana ridibunda have demonstrated that PACAP is widely distributed in the central nervous system (particularly in the hypothalamus and the median eminence) and in peripheral organs including the adrenal gland. The cDNAs encoding the PACAP precursor and 3 types of PACAP receptors have been cloned in amphibians and their distribution has been determined by in situ hybridization histochemistry. Ontogenetic studies have revealed that PACAP is expressed early in the brain of tadpoles, soon after hatching. In the frog Rana ridibunda, PACAP exerts a large array of biological effects in the brain, pituitary, adrenal gland, and ovary, suggesting that, in amphibians as in mammals, PACAP may act as neurotrophic factor, a neurotransmitter and a neurohormone.

Abstract

We have recently found that, in the frog adrenal gland, endozepines are present in chromaffin cells and we have shown that the triakontatetraneuropeptide TTN is a potent stimulator of corticosteroid secretion in vitro. In the present study, we have investigated the transduction mechanisms mediating the corticotropic effect of TTN on adrenocortical cells. Incubation of adrenal explants with graded concentrations of TTN induced a dose-dependent increase in cAMP formation, but did not affect polyphosphoinositide metabolism. Pretreatment of adrenal cells with the protein kinase A inhibitor H-89 markedly reduced the stimulatory effect of TTN on corticosterone and aldosterone secretion by perifused cells, whereas the phospholipase C inhibitor U-73122 did not affect the TTN-evoked stimulation of corticosteroid output. Incubation of adrenal cells with cholera toxin abolished the stimulatory effect of TTN on steroid secretion. Administration of a brief pulse of TTN (10(-6) M) in the vicinity of cultured adrenocortical cells induced a robust increase in the concentration of intracellular calcium ([Ca2+]i). Repeated pulses of TTN resulted in a gradual attenuation of the responses, indicating the existence of a desensitization phenomenon. Incubation of the cells with the T-type calcium channel blocker mibefradil significantly reduced the TTN-evoked [Ca2+]i increase, whereas the L-type calcium channel blocker nifedipine and the N-type calcium channel blocker omega-conotoxin GVIA had no effect. Incubation of adrenal cells with H-89 markedly reduced the stimulatory effect of TTN on [Ca2+]i. The involvement of calcium in steroid secretion induced by TTN has also been investigated. Administration of mibefradil significantly reduced the TTN-evoked stimulation of steroid production, whereas nifedipine was devoid of effect. Taken together, these data indicate that in frog adrenocortical cells, the endozepine TTN stimulates cAMP formation and calcium entry through T-type calcium channels. The effects of TTN on the adenylyl cyclase/protein kinase A pathway and calcium influx both contribute to the stimulatory action of the peptide on corticosteroid secretion.

Abstract

The biochemical characteristics and the distribution of pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP) binding sites have been investigated in the brain of the frog Rana ridibunda by using [(125)I]PACAP27 as a radioligand. Membrane-binding studies revealed the existence of high-affinity receptors for frog PACAP38 and PACAP27. In contrast, the [Des-His(1)]PACAP38 analogue had a much lower affinity and vasoactive intestinal polypeptide did not produce any displacement of the binding. Autoradiographic labeling of frozen brain sections revealed that the highest concentrations of PACAP receptors were located in the olfactory bulb, pallium, striatum, habenular nuclei, ventromedial thalamic nucleus, corpus geniculatum, posterior tubercle, dorsal part of the magnocellular preoptic nucleus, tectum, and the molecular cell layer of the cerebellum. Moderate binding was observed in the septum, in most parts of the thalamus, the dorsal hypothalamic nucleus, the median eminence, the ventral nuclei of the tegmentum, the torus semicircularis, and the interpeduncular and isthmi nuclei. The present data provide the first biochemical characterization and anatomic distribution of PACAP binding sites in the brain of a nonmammalian vertebrate species. The widespread distribution of specific PACAP receptors in the frog brain suggests that the peptide does not act solely as a hypophysiotropic factor, but likely fulfills neurotransmitter functions, neuromodulator functions, or both.

Abstract

Molecular cloning of secretogranin II (SgII) in phylogenetically distant species has recently revealed the existence of a highly conserved 66-amino acid peptide flanked by preserved pairs of basic residues. This observation suggested that this peptide, named EM66, which had not been described to date, could be an important processing product of SgII. The aim of the present study was to investigate the possible occurrence of EM66 in the human adrenal gland. The EM66 peptide was generated in Escherichia coli, which was programmed to make a fusion protein containing the human EM66 sequence. The affinity-purified fusion protein was used to raise polyclonal antibodies in rabbits. The free EM66 peptide was obtained by cleavage of the fusion protein followed by high performance liquid chromatography purification. Immunohistochemical analysis using the EM66 antibodies revealed intense labeling of adrenochromaffin cells in the adult adrenal medulla and the fetal adrenal gland. A sensitive and specific RIA was developed and applied to the detection of EM66-like immunoreactivity in extracts of adult adrenal medulla and whole fetal adrenal gland after high performance liquid chromatographic analysis. A major immunoreactive species exhibiting the same retention time as recombinant EM66 was detected in both adult and fetal adrenal extracts. Taken together, these data demonstrate that posttranslational processing of SgII actually generates EM66 in the adrenal gland. The strong conservation of the amino acid sequence of EM66 in the vertebrate phylum and the occurrence of the mature peptide in both fetal and adult chromaffin cells suggest that EM66 could play an important physiological role in the human adrenal gland.

Abstract

International audience; The distribution and pharmacological properties of pituitary ad-enylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP) receptors were studied in the fetal human adrenal gland during the second trimester of gestation. Autoradiographic studies, using [ 125 I]PACAP27 as a ra-dioligand, revealed that PACAP-binding sites are exclusively located on chromaffin cells of adrenals from fetuses 14 –20 weeks old. Biochemical characterization of binding revealed the occurrence of a single class of PACAP-binding sites with a dissociation constant value of 0.32– 0.74 nmol/L and a binding capacity of 0.30 – 0.81 pmol/mg wet tissue. PACAP27 and PACAP38 were equipotent in competing for [ 125 I]PACAP27 binding (IC 50 0.28 – 0.64 nmol/L and 0.15– 0.81 nmol/L, respectively), and the Hill coefficients were close to 1. In contrast, vasoactive intestinal polypeptide was much less efficient in displacing the tracer (IC 50 4 –362 nmol/L), and the Hill coefficients were less than 0.6. PACAP38 induced a dose-dependent increase in cAMP production in fetal human adrenal cell suspension (ED 50 0.07 0.02 nmol/L), as well as in cells maintained in culture for 5 days (5.4 1.8 nmol/L). In constrast, PACAP38 induced a modest increase in inositol phosphate formation. These data indicate that type I PACAP receptors are present in the early stages of the human me-dulla organization during the process of migration of chromaffin cells from the periphery to the central part of the gland. The present results suggest that PACAP could be involved in the regulation of the human adrenochromaffin cells during ontogenesis. (J Clin Endocrinol Metab 83: 1299 –1305, 1998)

Abstract

Patients with gynecologic malignancies may develop metastases throughout the neuraxis. Cervix-related carcinomatous meningitis is a distinctly unusual clinical event with only two previous cases reported in the English medical literature. We review clinical, radiographic, and pathologic findings of a woman with advanced adenocarcinoma of the uterine cervix, whose course was complicated by leptomeningeal metastases. Carcinomatous meningitis occurs in the setting of rapidly advancing systemic disease and represents a terminal complication of cervical cancer.

Abstract

Introduction Residual symptoms (RS) are common in bipolar disorder. There is no clear consensus on how RS are defined, and individual clinicians may have their own perceptions of this clinical problem. Objective The aim of this study is to define RS and to describe their management using a qualitative analysis. Methods A qualitative study was conducted. Data were collected from five focus groups including 41 psychiatrists all over France. An interview guide was used, including questions about definition of RS, their assessment and influence on the management of bipolar patients. Content analysis was used to identify themes emerging from the focus groups. Results There was no consensus among participants regarding an explicit definition of RS. The definition appears to be multifactorial, interactive and scalable. It is based both on the psychiatrist's therapeutic objectives and patient's complaints. Eight major RS was identified: suicidal risk, emotional dysregulation, compliance, cognitive impairment, sleep disorder, functional disability, complaints from the patients and the development of comorbidities. Content analysis underlines the fact that: standardized tools are not used in clinical practice; RS are a constant preoccupation; they justify optimisation of medication and adjustment of visit frequency. Conclusions Qualitative study is helpful to define and describe RS. Identifying RS is an important way of achieving implementation strategies and improve management of bipolar patients.

Abstract

Thirty-four patients with epithelial carcinoma of the ovary were entered into a trial of adjuvant intraperitoneal P-32 following induction chemotherapy and a negative second-look laparotomy. The breakdown by initial Stage was Stage IC, 5; Stage II, 3; Stage III optimal, 22; and Stage III suboptimal, 4. Previous treatment consisted of 4-12 cycles (median 6) of cisplatin or carboplatin-based combination chemotherapy. Fifteen millicuries of P-32 were instilled via a Tenckhoff catheter placed at the time of second-look laparotomy. Because of a 22% incidence of bowel injury in the first 23 patients, the P-32 dose was reduced to 12 mCi in the last 11 patients. To date, there have been no bowel injuries at the lower dose. Eighteen of the 34 (53%) patients have relapsed with a median time to relapse of 20 months and a median follow-up for all patients of 31 months. There has been no difference in the relapse rate between a dose of 12 and 15 mCi. Intraperitoneal P-32 does not appear to reduce the relapse rate following a negative second-look laparotomy. The incidence of bowel injury is dose dependent and is higher than that seen in patients treated as an adjuvant following initial surgery without subsequent chemotherapy or second-look laparotomy.

39. New molecular evidence for surface and sub-surface soil erosion controls on the composition of stream DOM during storm events

Abstract

Storm events are responsible for more than 60 % of the export of dissolved organic matter (DOM) from headwater catchments due to an increase in both the discharge and concentration. The latter was attributed to changing water pathways inducing the mobilization of DOM from the surface soil horizons. Recent molecular investigations have challenged this view and hypothesized (i) a contribution of an in-stream partition of organic matter (OM) between eroded particles and the dissolved fraction and (ii) the modification of the composition of soil DOM during storm events. To investigate these assumptions, soil solutions in the macropores, surface runoff and stream outlet were sampled at high frequency during three storm events in the Kervidy–Naizin catchment, part of the French critical zone observatory AgrHyS. The molecular composition of the DOM was analysed by thermally assisted hydrolysis and methylation (THM) with tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH) coupled to a gas chromatograph and a quadrupole mass spectrometer. These analyses highlighted a modification of the DOM composition in soil solution controlled by the water-table dynamic and pre-event hydrological conditions. These findings fit with the mechanism of colloidal and particulate destabilization in the soil macroporosity. The different behaviour observed for lignins, carbohydrates and fatty acids highlights a potential chemical segregation based on their hydrophobicity. The composition of surface runoff DOM is similar to the DOM composition in soil solution and could be generated by the same mechanism. The DOM composition in both soil solution and surface runoff corresponds to the stream DOM composition observed during storm events. On the basis of these results, modifications of the stream DOM composition during storm events seem to be due to surface and sub-surface soil erosion rather than in-stream production.

Thirty-nine previously untreated patients with stages III and IV ovarian carcinoma were treated with debulking surgery, followed by alternating combination chemotherapy with cisplatin, Adriamycin (Adria Laboratories, Columbus, Ohio), and cyclophosphamide (PAC); and hexamethylmelamine, cyclophosphamide, methotrexate, and 5-fluorouracil (HexaCAF). Of 19 patients with measureable disease at the onset of therapy, ten (53%) had at least a partial response to chemotherapy. Seven (18% of total) patients were found to be pathologically free of disease at secondlook surgery, but four patients relapsed 19 to 31 months after initiating therapy. The median progression-free survival period of all 39 patients entered into the study is 12 months, and the median crude survival is 21 months. The PAC/HexaCAF alternating combination chemotherapy regimen may be administered with moderate toxicity, but the treatment results are not superior to those reported for PAC or HexaCAF alone in advanced ovarian carcinoma.

41. Carcinoma of the cervix and pregnancy

Abstract

All patients with cervical cancer diagnosed during pregnancy at Jackson Memorial Hospital, the University of Miami School of Medicine, from 1960–1970 have been reviewed. There are 122 patients in this group; 99 had carcinoma in situ and 23 had invasive cancer. The prevalence rate for carcinoma in situ during pregnancy, was 0.192% and for invasive carcinoma, 0.046%. Of the patients, 95% had a Class III or higher Papanicolaou smear which led to the diagnosis. This is a young population in that the mean age was 29.6 years. Therapy for Stage 0 carcinoma and Stage IA (microinvasive) carcinoma was total hysterectomy, whereas radical hysterectomy with pelvic lymphadenectomy was recommended for Stage IB/IIAcarcinoma of the cervix. Radiotherapy was utilized for more advanced disease or in patients with contraindications to surgery. The importance of adequate follow-up is emphasized in that six patients with carcinoma in situ during pregnancy were found to have invasive carcinoma at a later date and two patients with invasive carcinoma had progression of their disease when treatment was delayed. The survival rate with radical operation during pregnancy for Stage IB and IIA carcinoma has been 90% in 10 patients followed nearly 3 years or longer. An additional four patients had radical operation in the follow-up period and all four are clinically free of recurrent cancer at the present time. Major complications were high in those patients treated with primary radiotherapy, and of the five patients who were so treated, four have died, one with recurrent carcinoma and the other three from complications of radiotherapy. An additional three patients were treated with primary radiotherapy during the intrapartum period. In this group two have died of recurrent cancer while one remains clinically free of cancer.

Abstract

Oil from sunflowers grown in southern U.S. was compared with cottonseed and palm oils for frying potato chips. Chips fried in each oil were evaluated by chemical and sensory methods at 2-wk intervals during 10 wk storage at 31°C. At each evaluation interval, sensory scores did not differ markedly among chips fried in the three oils. Flavor of chips from all oils decreased in quality during storage at the same rate and differed significantly between chips stored 0 and 10 wk. However, quality deterioration was not clearly defined as rancidity by the panel. In general, chemical and sensory analyses of the potato chips and of heated oils indicated no difference in the performance of the oils.

Abstract

Prior to 1971, adenosis and primary adenocarcinoma of the vagina were unusual entities. Since then, a marked increase in both processes has occurred, felt to be related to maternal ingestion of Diethylstibestrol (DES) and other estrogenic compounds during the first trimester, with subsequent abnormalities in female off-spring. To date, there are over 170 cases of adenocarcinoma reported, and there may be as many as one million patients with adenosis. Treatment of benign adenosis is somewhat of a controversy but adenocarcinoma is treated with surgery, radiation or a combination thereof, depending upon the specifics of the patients. Four patients are presented, one treated surgically and three with radiotherapy, all with complete remission over one to two years. It behooves all physicians caring for young women to be aware of these disease processes for the maximum therapeutic benefit to be achieved.

Abstract

Secretoneurin (SN) is a novel bioactive peptide that derives from the neuroendocrine protein secretogranin II (SgII) by proteolytic processing and participates in neuro-immune communication. The neuropeptide pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP-38) dose-dependently stimulates (EC(50) approximately 3 nM) SN release (up to 4-fold) and SgII gene expression (up to 60-fold) in cultured bovine adrenochromaffin cells. The effect of PACAP on both SN secretion and SgII mRNA levels is rapid and long lasting. We analyzed in this neuroendocrine cell model the transduction pathways involved in both SN secretion and SgII gene transcription in response to PACAP. The cytosolic calcium chelator BAPTA-AM and the nonselective calcium channel antagonist NiCl(2) equally inhibited both secretion of the peptide and transcription of the SgII gene, indicating a major contribution of calcium influx in PACAP-induced SN biosynthesis and release in chromaffin cells. Inhibition of protein kinase A (PKA) or C (PKC) also reduced PACAP-evoked SN release but did not alter the stimulatory effect of PACAP on SgII mRNA levels. Conversely, application of mitogen-activated protein kinase inhibitors suppressed PACAP-induced SgII gene expression. The effect of PACAP on SgII mRNA levels, like the effect of the PKC stimulator 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA), was not affected by cycloheximide, whereas the effects of the PKA stimulator forskolin or cell-depolarization by high K(+) were significantly reduced by the protein synthesis inhibitor. PACAP and TPA both increased the binding activity of the SgII cAMP response element to trans-acting factors present in chromaffin cell nuclear extracts, which are recognized by antibodies to activator protein-1-related proteins. These data indicate that SN biosynthesis is regulated by PACAP in chromaffin cells through complex signaling cascades, suggesting that SN may play a function during trans-synaptic stimulation of the adrenal medulla.

45. Pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide and its receptors: from structure to functions.

Abstract

Pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP) is a 38-amino acid peptide that was first isolated from ovine hypothalamic extracts on the basis of its ability to stimulate cAMP formation in anterior pituitary cells. PACAP belongs to the vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP)-glucagon-growth hormone releasing factor-secretin superfamily. The sequence of PACAP has been remarkably well conserved during the evolution from protochordate to mammals, suggesting that PACAP is involved in the regulation of important biological functions. PACAP is widely distributed in the brain and peripheral organs, notably in the endocrine pancreas, gonads, and respiratory and urogenital tracts. Characterization of the PACAP precursor has revealed the existence of a PACAP-related peptide whose activity remains unknown. Two types of PACAP binding sites have been characterized. Type I binding sites exhibit a high affinity for PACAP and a much lower affinity for VIP whereas type II binding sites have similar affinity for PACAP and VIP. Molecular cloning of PACAP receptors has shown the existence of three distinct receptor subtypes, the PACAP-specific PAC1 receptor, which is coupled to several transduction systems, and the two PACAP/VIP-indifferent VPAC1 and VPAC2 receptors, which are primarily coupled to adenylyl cyclase. PAC1 receptors are particularly abundant in the brain and pituitary and adrenal glands whereas VPAC receptors are expressed mainly in the lung, liver, and testis. The wide distribution of PACAP and PACAP receptors has led to an explosion of studies aimed at determining the pharmacological effects and biological functions of the peptide. This report reviews the current knowledge concerning the multiple actions of PACAP in the central nervous system and in various peripheral organs including the endocrine glands, the airways, and the cardiovascular and immune systems, as well as the different effects of PACAP on a number of tumor cell types.

Abstract

In this paper cerium oxide (CeO2) nanoparticles with 200-300 nm in diameter were synthesized via a precipitation method using ammonia water and oxalic acid as precipitant, respectively. The as-prepared CeO2 nanoparticles were characterized by means of different techniques including X-ray, scanning electron microscopy and FT-IR. The effect of calcine temperature and precipitant on the crystal size and morphology were discussed. The results showed that the shape of CeO2 nanoparticles prepared is strongly dependent on the precipitant. The average particle size as well as the crystallite size increased with increasing the calcine temperature. The structure of the na noparticles was fluorite-type structure in the samples.

Abstract

Recent years, as the urgent demands of the state and society for high-resolution aerial images and large-scale DLG (Digital Line Graphic), UAV borne low-altitude Photogrammetry system are used more and more widely. Combining the application of UAV system in Shanxi for collecting the 1:1000 scale DLG, in this paper, the main steps and key technologies of UAV system for lower altitude aerial photogrammetry are introduced. In this passage, we took an area of Shanxi as the survey area, acquired 1024 aerial images of the survey area. After the calculation of aerial triangulation, we get the plane accuracy of the encrypted points is 0.21 m and the height accuracy of encrypted points is 0.35 m, could meet the accuracy of 1:1000 scale mapping. It can be seen that the UAV system for low altitude photogrammetry has its own advantages in acquiring high resolution aerial images and large scale DLG, and UAV system has a great development prospects.

Abstract

Between 1966 and 1978, 201 patients with adenocarcinoma of the endometrium were treated at two hospitals in San Diego. Of these patients, 161 had disease limited to the corpus at the time of diagnosis. The majority of these patients received external whole-pelvic irradiation, followed as soon as possible by simple extrafascial hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy. When this treatment method was used, actuarial survivals of 95% for Stage I disease were achieved. Also reported is the low incidence of wound complications in the group of patients operated soon after cessation of irradiation. The patients treated in this fashion had good survival rates, little morbidity from the adjunctive irradiation, and fewer wound complications than previously anticipated.
