A personal narrative is presented in which author shares his experience of living at his grandmother's lake house, located between Water Valley and Oxford, Mississippi during quarantine.

Several taphonomic factors influence the composition of the palynological record especially in archaeological deposits, where human activities alter the representation of taxa. Spatial analysis by a taphonomic approach to the distribution of pollen and non-pollen palynomorphs (NPP) provides useful information about intra-site spaces and environments in the Early Neolithic lakeside settlement of La Draga (Banyoles, NE Iberia). The spatial correlation of algae, lakeshore and aquatic plants and herbs with an economic value, together with eggs of intestinal parasites and spores of coprophilous fungi, evidence a humid and organic environment beneath a hut, where consumption waste is concentrated. In contrast, high values of arboreal pollen (AP) and spores of fungal indicators of soil erosion show a sub-aerial environment strongly altered by taphonomic processes in outside areas. Finally, the association of the highest values in Cerealia-t and the spatial distribution of grinding stones within Sector D identifies an area of cereal processing, proving the suitability of spatial analysis in archaeopalynology as a powerful tool for reconstructing activity areas within archaeological settlements. This study uses hedonic pricing models to examine the relationship between lake levels and property values for properties adjacent to Lake Thurmond. Lake Thurmond is located along the Savannah River Basin, bordering Georgia and South Carolina. Of the 1,030 properties from 2000-2009 for which data was reliable and available, 388 were lake front homes. The model of the effect of lake level on sales prices also includes home characteristics, home condition variables, lake attributes, and macroeconomic control variables. Results reveal a statistically significant change in sales price when the lake is closer to full pool. Results confirm that declining Lake Thurmond water levels have an impact on real estate values within some ranges below full pool. As climate variability places increasing pressure on communities, future research would benefit from further exploration into the relationship between economic activity and changing lake levels. This study selected a typical waterfront lake, the Inner Lake, as the research area. Based on field measurements and laboratory experiments, the basic properties of sediment particles were analyzed, including size, bulk and dry bulk density, and hydrostatic and hydrodynamic settling velocity. With the finite-volume method, the flux vector splitting (FVS) scheme was employed to establish a two-dimensional unsteady flow and sediment mathematical model. The underwater terrain shaping processes in the short term (2017), middle term (2020), and long term (2025) were predicted. The results showed that sediment deposition thickness will significantly increase in the Inner Lake, reaching 13.5 cm in the short term (January 2017), 28.6 cm in the middle term (January 2020), and 55.2 cm in the long term (January 2025). Owing to the strong hydrodynamic condition of the Leading Channel, sediment deposition there is the lowest, with the lake bed elevating rate at 3.92 cm ⋅ a-1 on average. The elevating rate at the northern bottomland and the southern bottomland is 54.3% higher than at the Leading Channel because of the reduction of sediment carrying capacity, and it is at a middle level at Jiaonan Gate because of the backwater effect of the tide. The average elevating rate of the whole lake is 4.50 cm ⋅ a-1 in the short term, 5.03 cm ⋅ a-1 in the middle term, and 5.32 cm ⋅ a-1 in the long term. The increase in average elevating rate indicates that sediment deposition will further affect hydrodynamic conditions and thereby accelerate the lake bed elevating process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Urban blue space is increasingly embraced by cities as a specific and valuable genre of public space, valued for its economic, symbolic and experiential place attributes and essential to sustainable urban development. This article takes up the concept of urban blue space from a design perspective, extending and exploring it through a critical social science lens. Using the reconfiguration and redesign of the central Seattle waterfront as a case example, the idea of "doing justice" is enlisted to examine not just the design opportunities and formal characteristics of the site, but also the patterns of privilege, access and regional socio-ecological equity that are raised through its redesign. After situating the extraordinary design opportunity presented by this iconic urban blue space, and the imperative to do justice to the waterfront's physical situation, the article presents the site from four additional and discrete perspectives: economic justice, environmental justice, social justice and tribal justice. By thus foregrounding the urban political ecology of the waterfront, the article demonstrates that the most important challenge of the site's redevelopment is not technological, financial or administrative, although these are real, and significant challenges, but rather, the need to construct a place that works to counter established patterns of local and regional injustice. In Seattle as in other coastal port cities, urban blue space is a shared public and environmental good, with unique and demanding governance responsibilities for its conceptualization and sustainable development. Advocates of sustainable urban development often privilege the region as a scale for coordinated action and investment. However, discourses of sustainability institutionalised through regional planning, and conflated with notions of liveability, lend themselves to recruitment by competing, and opposing, development interests. To be regionally sustainable, an individual land development should, both on-site and through its connections to other sites, contribute to overall sustainability of the region. Using examples of industrial waterfront redevelopment in metropolitan Vancouver, we show how particular urban spaces are misrepresented as lynchpins of regional sustainability. In a plan for residential redevelopment, it is claimed that sustainable redevelopment will reunite citizens with “their waterfront”, reframed as liveable, pure, clean, ecologically vital and non-industrial. At an adjacent site, it is claimed that waterfront industrial land should be protected to combat industrial sprawl. Yet, in both cases the developers have lobbied for the expansion of road transportation making the claims of regional sustainability doubtful. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

INTRODUCTION I built my first "green" structure when I was ten years old--a multilevel tree house with views of my backyard and the woods beyond. The whole thing was built from lumber cast off (with permission, honestly) from a construction site down the road and hauled in by kids with wagons. Old nails straightened with hammers, a rusty handsaw for the cuts and a rickety ladder borrowed from some kid's father got us that fort in the sky--and my first experience in recycling and reuse. Actually, I had the privilege of growing up around talented people with solid skills. My grandfather worked on the Old Ironsides renovations at the shipyard in Boston. My father taught me his renovation skills. I worked on a house build when I was fourteen with a man who was a natural at creating beautifully engineered trusses and carriers. When I was a twenty-year-old UConn student, I spent my weekends in New Hampshire helping friends build their summer home out of salvaged materials. Did the experience stick? Who knows? But this dyed-in-the-wool Yankee has always considered material reuse and recycling to be an important part of any build or renovation project. Today, I can look back on thirty-five years as a careful renovator, a thirty-year career as a DHW solar designer and installer, a solar thermal educator for the New Hampshire community college system, and a green builder long before it became fashionable. I belong to that group of "pioneers" that back in the seventies began pushing alternatives to our enormous energy appetites, despite the frustrating knowledge that what we were so right about was falling on deaf ears. Practical alternative solutions to our old ways have always been intriguing and have influenced my philosophy about building, renovating, and solar work over the years. The article focuses on the problem regarding the decision to build and pave a road along a lake located in a city park of Omicron and to install enough lights to make the walk pleasant and safe during the night. In placing the lights along the border closer to the lake, some council members feel that it will be cheaper because this side of the street is shorter than the other side. In contrast, the professors speculate that the key problem is the length of the middle line of the road, which is the line equidistant at every point from the borders. Based from their analysis, it has been found that the cost of putting the lights on the border of the road further from the lake is only a bit more than the cost of putting them along the lake.
