This essay will study the relationship of religion and politics in the context of two specific liturgical practices. These practices originate in the historical congregations formed during the Liberation Theology movement in Latin America and in the context of the neo-Buddhist Ambedkarite movements in India. The idea of the congregation will be articulated with the liturgical logic of “public service” in so far as the Greek word(s) for liturgy refers both to the physical assembly of citizens and the structural capacity for creating a space for the “common.” Coupling congregation with the collective sharing of a “common feeling” (Ambedkar) provides the essential material for a political analysis of two historical societies of the global South. In the case of Chile, from the time of the reign of Pinochet, political resistance came from several quarters, including that of the Christian religion, not as practiced by the Church but as a subversive challenge posed by Liberation Theology. The Ambedkarite conversion from Hinduism to Buddhism in 1956 created a strange conjuncture, wherein conversion both signified liberation from the erstwhile religious oppression of the Hindus and the entry into a new form of communitarian thought. But the future of such an act of conversion could only be realized in history if the forms of thought of a new Buddhism were to be actualized in real ethical-political practices of a people called Dalits, which means being oppressed. This paper will confront the precarious task of a comparative analysis of incommensurable situations and affirm the political universalism of a world-historical tradition of the oppressed/Dalit.

Seeing the world through the eyes of the marginalised has been a consistent theme in modern Latin American theology. When Latin American Liberation Theology first emerged, evangelical theologian René Padilla expressed a shared concern over the problem of poverty, but also warned that certain elements therein clashed with evangelical hermeneutics. Consequently, he called for a circular approach that would maintain a tension between the crisis of the moment and the authority of biblical revelation. In the twenty-first century, liberation discourse has expanded into postcolonial critique on indigenous culture and identity, including a stream known as Liberation Pluralism. Evangelicals share many of the same concerns. But as they engage with the discourse, there is an ongoing need to heed Padilla's warning. This article argues that evangelicals today can engage in postcolonial and liberation discourses, but that this should be carried out with that same circular hermeneutic which Padilla first proposed. This paper analyzes the development and consolidation of anticommunist discourse in the General Conferences of the Latin American Episcopate (CELAM), from Rio de Janeiro to Aparecida. It adopts a critical perspective to examine the construction of the "messianic fraternity" myth—an ideological narrative contrasting Christian ideals of community and redemption with Marxist principles of class struggle and revolution, which served as a central axis for the Church's rejection of communism in Latin America. Grounded in a critical analysis of the CELAM's final documents, this study identifies the theological, political, and social underpinnings of this stance, situating it within the historical and geopolitical dynamics that positioned the Church as a key counterforce to Marxism in the region. It also examines how anticommunist positions shaped pastoral strategies, particularly in relation to social movements like liberation theology, and reinforced an episcopal identity centered on defending Christian values against a perceived global ideological threat. Though denied access to advanced biblical study programs for many years, African American clergy and their churches have a long history of giving primacy to the Bible as their normative resource for opposing racial injustice. In an examination of whether an emphasis on spirituality might strengthen the social work profession, this writing explores the history of social work and the limits of the prevailing biopsychosocial framework. The author argues for the use of spiritual principles to inform social work practice. Spirituality as an essential dimension of professional service offers social workers a substantial approach to individual, community, and systemic change. Additionally, the article concludes that implications for intersecting spirituality and social work are present for education and especially critical in the pursuit of social justice. While there is a need for future literature studying the impact of spirituality at various points of practice, this article, positing social work as ministry, is a starting place. The article "Basic Ecclesial Communities in the Philippines: Histories and Stories of a Pilgrim Church" is a locally published compendium that documents the historical narratives of Basic Ecclesial Communities (BECs) in the Philippines. It is a collaborative effort between De La Salle University and the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines, supported by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts and the Lumina Foundation. The book compiles stories from 32 dioceses across the Philippines, highlighting the beginnings and ongoing journeys of BECs as told by local leaders in various Philippine languages. The long-studied theological concept of Christology is re-examined. Two new books have been published and are reviewed. The first draws on South American Liberation Theology and argues that any new developments in understandings of Christology must originate from reflective listening to the ways in which poor people and communities approach the biblical text. The second book develops issues first raised at the Girton Conference of 1921 organised by what was then called the Modern Churchman's Union. After debating Christology in Liberal Theology then and now, it draws on feminist theology, Hindu and Buddhist theology and Palestinian Liberation Theology. Arguments pursued concern a no longer "white" Jesus, colonialism and imperialism and the ways in which the powerful have used Christianity as a controlling and unifying force for their own ends. Raymond Williams's concept of the "structure of feeling" aims to describe the shared experiences, attitudes, and emotions of social groups at specific historical moments. However, this theory has been criticized for lacking a rigorous theoretical framework, clear definitions, and boundaries, as well as for failing to adequately explain its interaction with mainstream ideology. This paper attempts to address these issues through the lens of the Brazilian Liberation Theology movement. The "structure of feeling" established by Brazilian Liberation Theology departed from the traditional hierarchical system of the Church, aligning itself instead with emerging cultures and the practices of grassroots church communities. Under the repression of the military government, the mainstream Church began to accept certain aspects of Liberation Theology rather than viewing it solely as radical and threatening. Although Liberation Theology gradually waned after the fall of the military regime, its adjusted "structure of feeling"—devoid of its radical elements but still focused on social justice and poverty—profoundly impacted the global Catholic Church. The experience of the Brazilian Liberation Theology movement illustrates that a "structure of feeling" can transcend the dichotomy between consciousness and materiality and the crux lies in individuals discovering and asserting their own existence; such a "structure of feeling" can either emerge from within existing ideologies or challenge them directly; its relationship with mainstream ideology is significantly shaped by specific historical contexts; certain facets of emerging emotions are selectively incorporated into mainstream ideology, typically in ways that mitigate their more radical implications. The future of women in the Catholic Church, and indeed of the Church itself, is a point of heated contention. This article explores how the climate emergency is causing Catholics not only to reposition the human subject in relation to the natural world, but to re-evaluate and redefine the nature of the actors within it. Within this emerging sphere of Catholic environmentalism, institutional priorities have been slowly reconfigured, allowing arguments for greater liturgical inclusivity to resurface in novel ways. This preliminary study initiates an exploration into a novel informal Islamic teacher education programme developed by a community organisation. The presented case study explores the Afghan Muslim inspired Hayat Foundation's communal educational initiative, the Marefat programme. The programme, derived from Islamic educational theoriesis 'imbued with notions of reflective, critical, and reflexive thinking', which are designed to recognise the individual levels of development for every educator and simultaneously elevate their efficacy, agency, and person. Adopting an interpretivist-narrative methodology conveyed through a dialogical approach, this study focuses on the lived experiences of this social-welfare organisation by seeking to decipher the teleological nature of the programme. This examination is guided by three questions which seek to identify its intended audience, the specificity of the issue it attempts to address, and the approaches it has adapted to implement its programme. The findings suggest that the overarching purpose of this educational initiative is to foster empowering liberatory pedagogical responses to counter oppressive narratives in the reading of the Islamic tradition. The assassination of Ignacio Ellacuría and seven others at the Universidad Centroamericana José Simeon Cañas (UCA) in San Salvador in 1989 has had a deep and profound impact on the world-wide Jesuit community and the Catholic Church. His philosophy and theology of liberation have been carefully studied, as has his vision and operation of the UCA which was rooted in the preferential option for the poor. This preferential option for the poor at UCA was practised at a time of extreme oppression of the ordinary people and during a brutal civil war in El Salvador. Most academic study of the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament in North America has been done from a White European or North American perspective. Post-graduate schools have predominantly required students to read works written by White authors, and the vast majority of professors are White. However, the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament also has a long history of interpretation by non-White and Majority World thinkers, and their contributions need to be more widely acknowledged and employed in studying the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament. This article surveys the contributions of Black Hebrew Bible/Old Testament scholars on the book of Exodus. Black scholars employ a variety of methods and approaches as they engage with the biblical text. We consider these approaches by category, beginning with textual criticism and translation before exploring works that focus on Africa in the Bible, those that draw on African or African American context, and those that highlight issues of gender or the perspectives of liberation theology. In this article, we argue that public theologians have a rich tradition from which to argue for the right to self-determination of the Palestinian people. In particular, Dietrich Bonhoeffer's resistance to the co-opting of Christianity by the Nazi regime is frequently cited in theological circles as an exemplar. Yet, we find major public figures and theological societies, such as the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, and the United Kingdom's Society for the Study of Theology (SST) to be wanting in this regard. From an examination of Welby's comments on the Israeli bombardment in Gaza, and the SST's response to our open letter and the lament from Palestinian Christians, we argue that theologians are failing. We draw on Palestinian liberation theology and anticolonial theologies to argue that the work of liberation is the raison d'être of theology and requires political activism. Pope Francis has been widely portrayed by the popular media as a 'revolutionary left-wing' Pope, owing to his open stance on same-sex relationships and his harsh criticism of capitalism. His South American background has also led the media to casually associate him with the tradition of liberation theology, whose methodology is deeply influenced by Marxism. In this article, I argue that Pope Francis's public theology is neither a Marxist theology nor a liberation theology, as some critics have suggested. In contrast, his theology is an assemblage of the critical heritage of Catholic social thought, Franciscan theology of the poor, Argentine theology of the people, and Ignatian pastoral theology. This article aims to analyse and explore the historical struggle of Islam in the liberation of the ummah, especially the liberation of Bilal bin Rabbah. This article uses qualitative research with a phenomenological approach. The primary data source of this article was literature related to the story of Bilal bin Rabbah. At the same time, secondary data used comprised scientific articles, books of tafsir, and a range of books and reports related to the theme of the discussion. The results show that the story of Bilal bin Rabbah contains heroic liberation values in opposing the injustice of the Jahiliyah period. Liberation theology in Islam emphasises the values of social justice, freedom, and resistance to all forms of oppression. The life story of Bilal bin Rabah is a clear example of the application of these values, illustrating the firmness of faith, resistance to inequality, and struggle against oppression. In addition, Islam also provides indicators as a marker that the human being is free. The indicators are: Freedom of religion, Freedom of opinion and expression, Individual freedom, Economic freedom, Freedom from oppression and injustice and Freedom in education. This article argues that theology (systematic or otherwise) is ultimately grounded in (religious) experience. To that end, I methodologically demonstrate that theological inquiry cannot coherently be pursued without attention to people’s experience of the divine/sacred. Thus, this article stands as a methodological development and defense of a family of theological viewpoints that I call context-attentive theologies. In order to do so, I examine the writings of three authors whose different approaches to the problem of divine revelation will help me to clarify the meaning of context-attentive theology: Jean-Luc Marion, H. Richard Niebuhr, and Gustavo Gutiérrez. I proceed in four steps. First, I provide an account of context-attentive theology through an examination of the task of theology. Second, I focus on Marion’s phenomenology of revelation to ascertain to what extent it incorporates contextual analysis. Third, I turn to Niebuhr’s account of revelation, which I construe as a context-attentive theology shaped by the “historical turn.” Fourth, I turn to Gutiérrez’s liberation theology to show how Niebuhr’s “radical reconstruction” within the context of the historical turn is further radicalized by liberation theology, which I take as a prime example of context-attentive theology.

Like other forms of theology, Black Theology emerges out of the critical thinking, reflection, and Christian practices of African American people. Theology is generally developed out of Christian people's experiences at different times. Since theology is not mentioned in the Bible, people would continue to formulate theologies using scripture to answer their theological questions. This article discusses African Americans' questions, thinking, and reflection through their Christian experience and a few responses to Black Theology in the United States. Since the emergence of Black Theology, there have been questions and criticism raised by European theologians. Black Theology and Black Power (BTBP) features liberationists who are devoted to resisting liberalism's realpolitik. The decolonial implications of their devotion illustrate the necropolitical frame of reference BTBP foreshadows. Section one describes liberation as the method Black theology uses to dismiss liberal politics that displace Black death. The ideals that established conditions for norms regarding death and life are political and, as the second section shows, emblematic of liberal theories that emphasise the inviolability of the individual. The last section explains the importance of French critical theory to necropolitics through the concepts biopolitics and homo sacer. Francophone theoretical accounts of necropolitics should be celebrated neither as a novel nor as a fatalistic way to affirm decoloniality and die, sacrificially. This article problematises the inward-looking approach adopted by classical Pentecostalism in a South African context. A literature review on White-led classical Pentecostal churches reveals that in their early development, these churches were inward-looking and only concentrated on their theology of Spirit baptism, evangelism, and eschatological expectations. This inward-looking approach made classical Pentecostalism passive in response to socio-economic and socio-political issues. Issues such as racial segregation and economic challenges are highlighted here to demonstrate classical Pentecostalism's non-engagement. The aim of this article is the rationale the benefits for classical Pentecostal churches in broadening their ways of engaging with South African society. This can be done by learning from African Independent Pentecostal Churches whose theology on socio-economic and socio-political issues is exceedingly outward-looking. These lessons have implications for Blackness as they demonstrate that Black leaders can change their circumstances without the supervision of Whiteness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Can social groups, as social groups, sin? Can they be judged? There is an ambivalence in late 20th-century Catholicism in this regard, between a form of personalism on the one hand, in which only individuals are persons and hence moral subjects, and traditional Thomists along with revisionary liberation theologians on the other. This paper argues that we can accommodate the worries of the first group with the more robust social ontology implied by the second. This social ontology can be found both in the work of contemporary analytic philosophers and, inchoately at least, in traditional Aristotelianism, and it allows us to give a more precise account of the metaphysics of structural sin than the alternatives. Liberation Theology, as a contemporary theology that emerged in the 20th century, is still in the current debate regarding the epistemology and methodology of theology. Its influence continues to have great relevance worldwide, for example, through the Theology of the People, which we analyze here in its main concepts. We make a formal approach to its method based on its epistemological foundations, in order to account for its theory arising from Christian praxis. In the description of its most important aspects, we highlight the role of its relations with philosophy and science. To do so, we focus on the contributions offered by the Brazilian author Agenor Brighenti and the Argentine thinker Juan Carlos Scannone. The 1980s in Latin America were the time of return to democratic rule, but also of the emergence of new forms of organization and participation. The ways of political participation and subjectivation changed during this time. There is little research that has addressed the historical development of the ideas of the social movements that emerged during this period. In Argentina, the role that Ecumenism and Liberation Theology played in the conceptualization of social movements is often overlooked. We argue about the existence of a Christian political-ideological matrix, understood as a tradition of objectification of the social and political, underlying what has been called the social left. This paper will focus on one way of re-imagining Catholic ethics through the praxis of accompaniment, especially in situations that lend themselves to moral dilemmas and potential justifications of significant harm. The growing integration and shared discourse of scholars from the global south with those from the global north has given rise to deeper ethical insight about the praxis of accompaniment. In turn, I analyze some predominant ways of wrestling with justifications of significant harm or violence, particularly recent contributions by Lisa Sowle Cahill and Kate Jackson-Meyer on moral dilemmas. I build on their contributions by critically reflecting on the praxis of accompaniment in particularly difficult moral situations. I argue that accompaniment offers a way forward that is consistent with and illuminates our dignity as well as the Love of Christ. Many marginalised young people in Guatemala City, one of the poorest and most dangerous cities in the world, face a bleak future. Faced with poor prospects, many turn to the Mara youth gangs, where crime and drug abuse are part of everyday life. The Pentecostal churches offer an alternative to the power of the Mara gangs. They offer safe spaces for young people as they are respected by the Maras. In this way, they open up a path to resocialisation and rehabilitation. However, the rehabilitated young people also criticise the Pentecostal churches, especially the neo-Pentecostal churches, which promote the prosperity gospel. On the one hand, the article reflects on the ambivalent role of Pentecostal churches for marginalised young people and, on the other hand, points to the relevance of a politically motivated liberation theology that is committed to a just society in this world. Augustine has long set the 'gold standard' for any theology of the city. However, in the Americas, Thomas Aquinas' De regimine principum exerts a greater practical and political influence as it was the basis for the instructions of Spanish and Portuguese crowns to the conquistadores. Colonial city architecture and urban planning followed Christian medieval principles and deliberately excluded indigenous villages, enslaved peoples, the urban poor and other religions from urban imaginaries in the Americas. This medieval (colonial) theology of the city has failed the peripheries of the Americas, as it has trapped theology in an instinctively negative attitude towards the city. This essay, firstly, establishes the legacy of colonial Christian imaginaries of the city in the Americas and explores the Christian political contributions to that worldview. Secondly, it presents a decolonial concept of the city in the Americas (specifically through a presentation of the city of Rio de Janeiro) – fostering an inclusive and just imaginary – based on the potential of the peripheries and insights from liberation theology. This potential of the periphery resists racist, authoritarian and exclusionary definitions of the periphery which are instinctively negative in the theological literature. The essay highlights the relevance of the cultural movements gathered around the so-called area of the Catholic Dissent in relation to the first reception of Freire's pedagogy in Italy, starting from the early Seventies. Actually, the cultural space representing the Catholic Dissent represented a privileged area in the endorsement of Freire's Pedagogy of the Oppressed within the Italian context. In so far, the reception of Freire's perspectives on education contributed to strengthen the reasons for the rejection of an oppressive system of education dependent on the exertion of the Power. Religions play a key role in shaping our worldviews, values, and behaviours and this includes our interactions with the environment. Fuelled by the development of the technocratic paradigm, Christianity has historically received a bad reputation for perpetuating anti-environmental views. Nonetheless, the development of ecotheological strands and the emergence of faith-based organisations focusing on climate justice have aided in producing the much-needed environmental reformulations. As such, this paper seeks to provide a broad overview of the role of Christianity in shaping worldviews, from those hindering environmental action to more contemporary ecotheological approaches discussing climate change, particularly Pope Francis' encyclical Laudato si'. Christianity's preparedness to navigate climate change will be theorised in relation to empirical evidence and the work of European faith-based organisations, as well as the methodological opportunities that the field of ecolinguistics can offer to inform effective communication.
