Abstract: International audience; OBJECTIVE: To elaborate a clinical practice decision tree for the choice of the first disease modifying antirheumatic drug (DMARD) for untreated rheumatoid arthritis of less than six months' duration. METHODS: Four steps were employed: (1) review of published reports on DMARD efficacy against rheumatoid arthritis; (2) inventory of the information available to guide DMARD choice; (3) selection of the most pertinent information by 12 experts using a Delphi method; and (4) choice of DMARDs in 12 clinical situations defined by items selected in step 3 (28 joint disease activity score (DAS 28): < or =3.2; >3.2 and < or =5.1; >5.1; rheumatoid factor status (positive/negative); structural damage (with/without)-that is, 3 x 2 x 2). Thus, multiplied by all the possible treatment pairs, 180 scenarios were obtained and presented to 36 experts, who ranked treatment choices according to the Thurstone pairwise method. RESULTS: Among the 77 items identified, 41 were selected as pertinent to guide the DMARD choice. They were reorganised into five domains: rheumatoid arthritis activity, factors predictive of structural damage; patient characteristics; DMARD characteristics; physician characteristics. In the majority of situations, the two top ranking DMARD choices were methotrexate and leflunomide. Etanercept was an alternative for these agents when high disease activity was associated with poor structural prognosis and rheumatoid factor positivity. CONCLUSIONS: Starting with simple scenarios and using the pairwise method, a clinical decision tree could be devised for the choice of the first DMARD to treat very early rheumatoid arthritis.

Abstract: International audience; A set of hydrogenated nanostructured silicon films consisting of Si nanoparticles with a dense phase embedded in an amorphous matrix are analysed by means of several spectroscopic tools. Medium and short range order are determined by Raman spectroscopy and the average coordination versus the hydrogen content is measured from x-ray absorption spectroscopy. The improvement of transport properties such as the normalized photoconductivity with respect to that of hydrogenated amorphous silicon is explained by an inhomogeneous distribution of constraints in the samples. Our results on the order at different scales agree well with the paracrystalline model and suggest a well relaxed host matrix.

Abstract: International audience; Integrase (IN) inhibitors are the newest class of antiretroviral agents developed for the treatment of HIV-1 infections. Merck's Raltegravir (RAL) (October 2007) and Gilead's Elvitegravir (EVG) (August 2012), which act as IN strand transfer inhibitors (INSTIs), were the first anti-IN drugs to be approved by the FDA. However, the virus develops resistance to both RAL and EVG, and there is extensive cross-resistance to these two drugs. New "2nd-generation" INSTIs are needed that will have greater efficacy against RAL- and EVG-resistant strains of IN. The FDA has recently approved the first second generation INSTI, GSK's Dolutegravir (DTG) (August 2013). Our current article describes the design, synthesis, and evaluation of a series of 1,8-dihydroxy-2-oxo-1,2-dihydroquinoline-3-carboxamides, 1,4-dihydroxy-2-oxo-1,2-dihydro-1,8-naphthyridine-3-carboxamides, and 1-hydroxy-2-oxo-1,2-dihydro-1,8-naphthyridine-3-carboxamides. This resulted in the identification of noncytotoxic inhibitors that exhibited single digit nanomolar EC50 values against HIV-1 vectors harboring wild-type IN in cell-based assays. Importantly, some of these new inhibitors retain greater antiviral efficacy compared to that of RAL when tested against a panel of IN mutants that included Y143R, N155H, G140S/Q148H, G118R, and E138K/Q148K.

Abstract: Process-history based methods are very commonly used for fault diagnosis and detection. However their efficiency is closely related to the quality of the measured data. In noisy environments, they usually fail particularly for incipient faults. This paper is an attempt to determine an analytical model allowing to estimate a theoretical threshold for fault detection based on the Fault to Noise Ratio (FNR). This model is developed using the Kullback-Leibler Divergence (KLD). For feature extraction, the used data are previously processed through Principal Component Analysis (PCA). The model is validated with simulated data and the results are so far very encouraging.

Abstract: In this paper, an innovative control strategy for hybrid power sources dedicated to automotive applications is detailed. First, an analysis of classical hybrid architectures using fuel cell (FC)/supercapacitors is presented. Then, an analysis of load requirements for automotive applications is proposed. A new control strategy of a single converter, based on a cascaded control loop with a decoupling strategy in the frequency domain, is fully explained. Finally, experimental results on a Ballard proton exchange membrane FC are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract: International audience; Dans cet article trois approches pour représenter les cycles d’hystérésis avec le modèle de Preisach sont proposées. La première s’appuie sur une expression analytique de la fonction de distribution. La seconde décompose le plan de Preisach en domaines élémentaires. Avec la troisième approche, c’est la forme intégrale de la fonction de distribution qui est utilisée. Pour étudier ces approches, des cycles d’hystérésis de tôles à grains non orientés ont été identifiés et les résultats comparés avec l’expérience.

Abstract: Dynamic reprogramming of gene regulatory networks (GRNs) enables organisms to rapidlyrespond to environmental perturbation. However, the underlying transient interactionsbetween transcription factors (TFs) and genome-wide targets typically elude biochemicaldetection. Here, we capture both stable and transient TF-target interactions genome-widewithin minutes after controlled TF nuclear import using time-series chromatin immunoprecipitation(ChIP-seq) and/or DNA adenine methyltransferase identification (DamID-seq).The transient TF-target interactions captured uncover the early mode-of-action of NIN-LIKEPROTEIN 7 (NLP7), a master regulator of the nitrogen signaling pathway in plants. Thesetransient NLP7 targets captured in root cells using temporal TF perturbation account for 50%of NLP7-regulated genes not detectably bound by NLP7 in planta. Rapid and transient NLP7binding activates early nitrogen response TFs, which we validate to amplify the NLP7-initiatedtranscriptional cascade. Our approaches to capture transient TF-target interactions genomewidecan be applied to validate dynamic GRN models for any pathway or organism of interest.

Abstract: A method is proposed to estimate the characteristics of the power flux supplied to an anode and a cathode in Ag-SnO2submitted to an AC electric arc with a maximal value of the arc current intensity about 400–500 A and an arc duration about 4–5 ms. It is based on the one hand on the observation by optical microscopy and Electron BackScatter Diffraction (EBSD) of the area melted by the arc, thus making it possible to evaluate the depth and radius melted, and on the other hand on a thermal modelling allowing to estimate an equivalent voltage (proportionality coefficient between the intensity of the arc current and the received power) and the power flux surface density.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper, the intermittent control is proposed for switched reluctance machine drive to both increase the efficiency and decrease the cost of the traction system for low-cost electric vehicles. With the purpose of maintaining the average machine torque required by the load, the intermittent control imposes a higher phase torque during a shorter time. The simulation and experimental results achieved with three different switched reluctance machines show that the intermittent control increases the system efficiency by reducing the converter losses and the core losses. Additionally, three different strategies of the control have been proposed to analyze their impact automotive application based on the criteria of efficiency, machine vibration and torque pulsation. It can also be easily applied for any switched reluctance machines using average-torque-control-based methods.

Abstract: International audience; In this work, the coupled control of the lateral and the longitudinal dynamics of an autonomous vehicle is addressed. As a first step, a multi-body modeling technique is used to develop a four wheeled vehicle planar model. This technique considers the vehicle as a robot consisting of articulated bodies. The geometric description of the vehicle system is derived using the modified Denavit-Hartenberg parameterization and then the dynamic model of the vehicle is computed by applying a recursive method used in robotics, namely Euler-Lagrange based Algorithm. The validation of the developed vehicle model was then conducted using an automotive simulator, the Scaner-Studio simulator. The developed vehicle model is then used to derive coupled control laws for the lateral and the longitudinal vehicle dynamics. Two coupled controllers are proposed: In the first controller, the control is realized using Lyapunov control techniques while in the second one an Immersion and Invariance with sliding mode approach is used. Both of the controllers aim to ensure a robust tracking of the reference trajectory and the desired speed while taking into account the strong coupling between the lateral and the longitudinal vehicle dynamics. In fact, the coupled controller is a key step for the vehicle safety handling, especially in coupled maneuvers such as lane-change maneuvers, obstacle avoidance maneuvers and combined maneuvers in critical driving situations. The developed controllers were validated in simulation under Matlab/Simulink using experimental data. Subsequently, an experimental validation of the proposed controllers was conducted using a robotized vehicle (Renault-ZOE) present in the Heudiasyc laboratory within the Equipex Robotex project.

Abstract: Due to their inherent advantages such as low cost, robustness and wide speed range, switched reluctance machines (SRMs) have attracted great attention in electrical vehicles. However, the vibration and noise problems of SRMs limit their application in the automotive industry because of the negative impact on driver and passengers&rsquo, comfort. In this paper, a new control method is proposed to improve the vibratory and acoustic behavior of SRMs. Two additional control blocks &mdash, direct force control (DFC) and reference current adapter (RCA)&mdash, are introduced to the conventional control method (average torque control (ATC)) of SRM. DFC is adopted to control the radial force in the teeth of the stator, since the dynamic of the radial force has a large impact on the vibratory performance. RCA is proposed to handle the trade-off between the DFC and ATC. It produces an auto-tuning current reference to update the reference current automatically depending on the control requirement. The effectiveness of the proposed control strategy is verified by experimental results under both steady and transient condition. The results show that the proposed method improves the acoustic performance of the SRM and maintains the dynamic response of it, which proves the potential of the proposed control strategy.

Abstract: The flow characteristics and pollutant dispersion around building are investigated numerically using three RANS turbulence closure models, i.e. Standard k–ɛ model, Realizable k–ɛ and RNG k–ɛ model. Two physical configurations are considered in this study: a single isolated obstacle and two obstacles forming an idealized street canyon. Numerical simulations are performed with OpenFOAM® source code which utilise the finite volume method to solve the transport equations of mass, momentum, turbulent kinetic energy and turbulent dissipation rate. When numerical results were compared to wind tunnel experiments, it was found that the RNG k–ɛ turbulence model yielded the best agreement with experimental data. Moreover, the coefficients of the RNG k–ɛ turbulence model were adapted to better predict the flow characteristics in the urban boundary layer. The results obtained using the appropriate model show good agreement with experimental measurements for velocity flow profile and turbulent kinetic intensity. The prediction of pollutant dispersion reveals that in addition to the Reynolds number, the emission location plays an important role in the pollutant concentration distribution.

The physical link is magnetic coupling. The cylindrical volume of the glasstags involves ahigh sensitivity to the magnetic field orientation. As the bats areflying, the tags equivalent surfaces are considered with a randomorientation. Using complementary coils principle enables todetect fruitfully the glasstags in two perpendicular orientationsnamed HM (horizontal mode) and VM (vertical mode). Wepropose the design of a flexible reader antenna structure bymeans of an adhesive copper tape fixed on a cloth. The prototypeis designed after CST simulations and empirical formulaevaluations. Measurements show a good agreement with themodelling and tests of detection are performed with theproposed reader antenna. By comparison with a commercialantenna, the prototype reaches the highest volume of detectionin both HM and VM modes and fulfills the targeted distance ofdetection.

Abstract: This paper deals with a control principle designed to allow remedial strategies for Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) drives. The scope of the paper is focused on three-phase machines and it aims to present a simple and easy to tune control scheme for the system while it operates in degraded mode, namely when only two out of the three phases are operational. Compared to existing control strategy dedicated to degraded mode, this work proposes an innovative one using new reference frames. Based on two innovative transformations applied respectively to the currents and the voltages of the system, the proposed control scheme allows, in degraded mode, the decoupling control of the states of the system and leads to continuous controller references during system steady states. These properties lead to a very straightforward control scheme based on independent PI controllers and to high static and dynamic performances. The parameters setting of the controller is quite simple whatever the degree of magnetic coupling between the two remaining motor phases. A laboratory test bench has been built to establish a proof of concept of the suggested remedial strategy. It is based on a three-phase open-end-winding permanent magnet machine fed with a power inverter made of three full H-bridge. This experimental setup enables to validate the main operations of the ac motor drive under degraded mode operation: torque control, speed change. Switching between healthy mode and faulty mode is also performed successfully using this setup.

Abstract: Recent advances in design techniques promote the development of concurrent engineering to reduce the time and cost of the design cycle. This is particularly necessary for mechatronic design which involves several disciplines. But companies have to address challenges associated with collaboration and reuse. The mechatronic design evolves from the system level to the multiple-disciplinary level. This requires that system engineers and disciplinary engineers collaborate closely for an integrated and continuous product development process. However, the heterogeneity of tools used in system level and disciplinary level with the lack of a common knowledge basis creates a gap between them. Thus, the focus of this paper is to develop a knowledge management framework suitable for mechatronic concurrent design and capable to harmonize the overall design cycle. Our contribution lies in structuring knowledge at the system and disciplinary levels to ensure the traceability between them. Our methodology called Collaborative Design Process and Product Knowledge (CDPPK) is detailed with the associated meta-model. A demonstrator is also presented and applied successfully to a collaborative industrial scenario concerning the Electronic Throttle Body (ETB).

Abstract: International audience; Band gap engineered smart three terminal solar cell: new perspectives towards very high efficiencies in the silicon world Abstract : We present the design of a new architecture of three-terminal (3-T) photovoltaic tandem solar cells. It combines an interdigitated back contacted (IBC) bottom lateral subcell with a heterojunction vertical top cell. In this concept, the two subcells can work independently and there is no need for tunnel junctions. It is particularly well suited to silicon back contact subcells and to various types of top cell materials from III-V compounds or perovskites. The working principle is detailed here using as an example a p/i III-V front stack onto n-type silicon IBC bottom cell. We perform 2D modeling using realistic material input parameters and show how interface bandgap engineering can improve the tandem cell efficiency up to a reachable 35% value. The proposed cell concept named BESTT (bandgap engineered smart silicon three-terminal) cell can be realized with less technological steps and at a lower cost compared to the conventional four-terminal process.

Abstract: International audience; We report on the application of a new contactless method based on eddy currents with a view to characterizing some transport properties of a large range of semiconductors. The innovative approach of this work consists in measuring the impedance of the coil by reflectometry using a broadband multicarrier test signal. The device works well with silicon wafers with a constant conductivity over a wide frequency range. Because of their electrical conductivity and high optical transmittance in the visible and near-IR regions of electromagnetic spectrum, indium tin oxide (ITO) films have motivated great interests in experimental studies and technological applications. The estimation of their electrical conductivity is a key point to develop these devices. On this paper we show that the setup can be used for the frequency characterization of ITO and AsGa nanolayers wich exhibit a frequency dependent behavior. The low frequency measurement are found in agreement with the classical four point probe setup.

Abstract: We have previously reported how semiconducting and amorphous Y-Ba-Cu-O (a-YBCO) can perform fast and sensitive infrared pyroelectric detection. We recall first these performances for planar and trilayer a- YBCO structures. We then consider migration to THz sensing by using a planar antenna. To minimize the antenna to device impedance mismatch, a- YBCO THz conductivity was measured. The conductivity, obtained by parallel plate waveguide time-domain spectroscopy, is 50 to 150 S/m (0.2 to 1.2 THz range). Antenna structures are suggested for both planar and trilayer devices.

Abstract: International audience; High-frequency injection (HFI) is an alternative method to estimate permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) rotor position using magnetic saliency. Once the maximum fundamental electrical frequency and the power converter switching frequency are set, the HFI voltage amplitude tuning is generally based on trial and error. This paper proposes a methodology to select the appropriate high-frequency signal injection voltage amplitude for rotor position estimation. The technique is based on an analytical model taking into account the noise in the voltage supply to derive the resulting currents containing the information on the rotor position. This model allows setting the injection voltage amplitude that leads to the maximum acceptable position error for a given signal-to-noise ratio and a speed range. The approach is validated with the analytical and the global drive models through extensive simulations. Experimental results on a 1-kW PMSM drive confirm the interest of the proposed solution.

Abstract: International audience; This research deals with the discrimination between conditions of faults in rolling element bearings based on a global spectral analysis. This global spectral analysis allows to obtain spectral features with significant discriminatory power. These features are extracted from the envelope spectra of vibration signals without prior knowledge of the bearings specific parameters and the characteristic frequencies. These extracted spectral features will then be the global spectral signature produced by the bearing faults. Since the signature produced by the faults in bearing balls is very weak, and hard to be detected and identified, this paper proposes the linear discriminant analysis as part of the global spectral analysis method in order to improve the diagnosis of ball faults. The application on experimental vibration data acquired from bearings containing different types of faults with different small sizes shows the proficiency of the overall method. The Bhattacharyya distance is used to confirm the efficiency of the obtained results.

Abstract: International audience; In mechatronic design, the exchange of data between stakeholders from different disciplines is necessary to ensure efficient and simultaneous engineering. Designers from all disciplines involved need to adopt new approaches to design, which facilitate concurrent collaboration. A new method based on Knowledge Based Engineering is presented in this work. The method has two key features. First, to support the designers in the different steps of the design cycle. And second, to reuse the design results and adapt them to requirement changes. Our contribution lies in adapting KBE application roles to mechatronic design. This method allows collaborative engineering and can reduce considerably the design time and cost. The method is then illustrated through its application to the design of an Electronic Throttle Body control system

Abstract: In this work, new gelled electrolytes were prepared based on a mixture containing phosphonium ionic liquid (IL) composed of trihexyl(tetradecyl)phosphonium cation combined with bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide [TFSI] counter anions and lithium salt, confined in a host network made from an epoxy prepolymer and amine hardener. We have demonstrated that the addition of electrolyte plays a key role on the kinetics of polymerization but also on the final properties of epoxy networks, especially thermal, thermo-mechanical, transport, and electrochemical properties. Thus, polymer electrolytes with excellent thermal stability (&gt, 300 &deg, C) combined with good thermo-mechanical properties have been prepared. In addition, an ionic conductivity of 0.13 Ms&middot, cm&minus, 1 at 100 &deg, C was reached. Its electrochemical stability was 3.95 V vs. Li0/Li+ and the assembled cell consisting in Li|LiFePO4 exhibited stable cycle properties even after 30 cycles. These results highlight a promising gelled electrolyte for future lithium ion batteries.

Abstract: It is generally taken for granted that the bulk minority carrier lifetime in uncompensated phosphorus-doped silicon (Si) wafers is stable under illumination. In contradiction with this long-time belief, we report on a fast and significant lifetime degradation under light soaking for Czochralski wafers sampled from the top ingot end. We demonstrate that defect formation also proceeds during carrier injection by forward biasing Si heterojunction solar cells made from such wafers, suggesting a carrier-induced degradation rather than merely light-induced. The involved bulk defect is shown to preferentially form at the wafer center, where double Thermal Donors are in high concentration. The role of Thermal Donors is investigated further and the obtained preliminary results support their involvement in the reported carrier-induced degradation.

Abstract: A multiscale model for the behaviour of ferroelectric polycrystalline materials under electro-mechanical loading is proposed. It is based on an energetic description of the equilibrium at the single crystal scale using a statistical estimate of the ferroelectric domain structure. A self-consistent scheme is then used to establish the behaviour of polycrystalline materials. The approach is anhysteretic but hysteresis effects can be added afterwards so as to obtain butterfly ferroelectric loops. It is applied to a tetragonal Lead Zirconate Titanate (PZT). The model allows the investigation of crystallographic texture effects on the overall behaviour and provides an estimate of internal stresses within the material. By way of an example a {100} fibre texture is predicted to generate as much as 150% more longitudinal strain and 33% more electric induction at 1 MV/m compared to an isotropic polycrystal. © 2014 The Authors. A nodal discontinuous Galerkin method is adopted for the spatial discretization of the nonlinear system satisfied by the components of the electric field. Explicit developments are used to construct boundary conditions to avoid the modeling of a volume around the superconducting sample. A modified Newton iterative method is introduced for solving the discrete system. Numerical examples on a 2-D superconducting plate and a 3-D superconducting cube are computed. Distributions of a component of the current density are presented and differences in the diffusive process are highlighted. The penetration time and losses are compared with those obtained with an A-V formulation solved by a finite-volume method.

Abstract: LGEP 2014 ID = 1513; International audience; The knowledge of superconducting filaments magnetization is an important issue of the LHC main magnets design during the construction at CERN. A new method for modeling a superconducting strand, which consists of several concentric layers of the filaments, is proposed in this paper. The numerical results obtained using the finite-element method demonstrate the coupling and decoupling behaviors between the superconducting filaments via the resistive matrix. The comparison with the earlier work on the superconductor modeling is presented and discussed.

Abstract: International audience; This paper presents an evaluation of the EMFs in the human body exposed to the wireless inductive charging system of electric vehicles such that the compliance of this charging system with respect to human EM exposure limits can be examined. A magnetic resonance imaging-derived and high-resolution model of the human body is used. An exposure assessment of a representative wireless inductive charging system, under a limited set of operating conditions, is provided to estimate the induced EMFs. The numerical analysis is performed with the finite element method. Numerical modeling of the system next to a standing human model shows that the EM exposure limits can be absolutely satisfied even when the transmitter coil is very close to the body. Furthermore, the worst configuration for the exposure evaluation of the wireless charging system is taken into consideration. This paper provides a useful guideline for the industry to develop inductive charging systems following the safety standards of radiation protection.

Abstract: International audience; Due to mass constraints, composite materials are possible candidates to replace metal alloys for electromagnetic shielding applications. The design of standard metallic shielding enclosures often relies on finite-element calculations. But in the case of composite materials, the strong dependence on the shielding properties to the microstructure makes the finite-element approach almost impossible. Indeed meshing the microstructure would imply a huge number of elements, incompatible with usual computational resources. We propose in this paper to develop homogenization tools to define the effective electromagnetic properties of composite materials at microwave frequencies. The ratio between the characteristic size of the microstructure and the wavelength is shown to be a key parameter in the homogenization process. The effective properties can then be used as an input for electromagnetic compatibility standard tools, designed for homogeneous media.

Abstract: International audience; This paper aims to provide Hardware/Software (Hw/Sw) codesign guidelines for system-on-chip field-programmable gate array-based sensorless ac drive applications. Among these guidelines, an efficient Hw/Sw partitioning procedure is presented. This Hw/Sw partitioning is performed taking into account both the control requirements (bandwidth and stability margin) and the architectural constraints (e.g., available area, memory, and hardware multipliers). A nondominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II) is used to solve the corresponding multi-objective optimization problem. The proposed Hw/Sw partitioning approach is then validated on a sensorless control algorithm for a synchronous motor based on an extended Kalman filter. Among the nondominated implementation solutions supplied by the NSGA-II, those that are considered as the most interesting are synthesized. Their time/area performances after synthesis are compared with success to their predictions. In addition, one of these optimal solutions is also tested on an experimental setup.

Abstract: International audience; In this article, we present the design and construction of a micropump exhibiting a nontraditional pumping principle whose design is achievable at very low scales. The operation is based on the action of a mechanical traveling wave deforming the bottom wall of a flexible channel containing a fluid. The paper treats for the first time the influence of the traveling wave parameters on the performance of the pump with the help of finite element simulations. The results obtained from the simulation are subsequently used for the dimensioning of the linear ultrasonic traveling wave actuator that drives the device. Finally, a very simple channel-reservoirs structure was conceived to test the device. At this point, several measurements of flow rate and back pressure were carried out to estimate the performance of the prototype for different values of wave amplitude. The article finishes with a comparison between the numerical and experimental results and a brief section of discussion and conclusions.

Abstract: We present a hybrid tri-axes magnetometer designed to measure weak magnetic fields in space from DC (direct current) up to a few kHz with a better sensitivity than fluxgate magnetometers at frequencies above a few Hz. This magnetometer combines a wire-wound ferromagnetic ribbon and a classical induction sensor. The nature of the wire-wound ferromagnetic ribbon sensor, giant magneto-impedance or magneto-inductance, is discussed. New configurations of wire-wound ferromagnetic ribbon sensors based on closed magnetic circuits are suggested and the hybrid sensor is described. The electronic conditioning of the wire-wound ribbon makes use of an alternating bias field to cancel the offset and linearize the output. Finally we summarize the main performances of the hybrid magnetometer and we discuss its advantages and drawbacks. A prototype has been built and was part of the scientific payload of the NASA rocket experiment CHARM-II (Correlation of High Frequency and Auroral Roar Measurements) launched in the auroral ionosphere. Unfortunately the launch campaign ended without any noticeable magnetic event and the rocket was eventually launched on 16 February 2010, through a very quiescent arc in the magnetic cusp and no wave activity was detected at frequencies observable by the hybrid magnetometer.

Abstract: International audience; The aim of this paper is to investigate the glow discharge in its diffuse and filamentary regime, and to study its transition to arc in argon at 100 mbar. The structure of the discharge is observed in correlation with its electrical signals in both static and in dynamic modes. Glow discharges were identified with a positive column that can be fully diffuse, fully filamentary, or a mix of the two with the filamentary part of the column always attached to the anode. Spontaneous transitions between glow discharges and arcs have also been observed and their dynamics are studied. Using high-speed imaging, the transition between glow and arc discharge was identified as the occurrence of two distinct phenomena: a propagation mechanism in the positive column and a constriction of the cathode root. An evaluation of the duration of each phenomenon as a function of electrode gap and current intensity was obtained. The duration of the constriction of the cathode root is found to be on the order of tens of nanoseconds and the duration of the propagation mechanism in the range 50-550 ns.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper, planar printed-circuit board (PCB) transformers with different winding arrangements are presented. Three different arrangements of the primary and the secondary meander-type windings are designed and fabricated. The electrical parameters of the transformers for all three designs are analyzed and compared. A significant increase of inductance of the primary and the secondary winding is achieved with an appropriate meander-type winding arrangement. In the frequency range of interest, the inductance is approximately 145 nH for the first design, whereas the inductance is approximately 1250 nH for the second and the third design. The coupling coefficient is 0.14 for the first design, whereas it is around 0.9 for the second and the third design. The transformer of the proposed design is to be used in low-power DC/DC converters; therefore, the core with high permeability Ferroxcube 3C90 was chosen. In addition, the transformers of the same winding arrangements were tested with Ferroxcube 3F3 core.

Abstract: International audience; The use of composite materials for electromagnetic shielding applications contributes to the effort of structure lightening in aerospace industry. In these materials the strong interaction between the electromagnetic field and the microstructure makes the standard numerical tools difficult to implement. Indeed these methods would involve an excessive number of degrees of freedom to describe details of the microstructure. An efficient way to overcome this problem is the use of homogenization techniques providing the effective properties of heterogeneous materials. These effective properties can then be introduced in standard numerical tools to estimate the behavior of shielding enclosures. A recent paper proposes an extension to microwave frequencies of quasistatic homogenization methods. It introduces a characteristic length for the microstructure in the case of a square array of circular 2-D conductive phases embedded in a dielectric matrix. In this paper, a method to identify this length parameter is proposed for random microstructures.

Abstract: International audience; The magnetic permeability of magnetic materials highly depends on mechanical stress. Stress state is usually multiaxial and has a significant effect on the performance of electromagnetic devices. In this paper a three-parameter analytical model for the stress dependent permeability of magnetic materials is proposed, based on a simplified energetic description of magneto-elastic behaviour. The proposed approach also provides a new equivalent stress for magnetic behaviour in the low-field and low-stress regime.

Abstract: International audience; The key constituent of silicon heterojunction solar cells, the amorphous silicon/crystalline silicon heterojunction (a-Si:H/c-Si), offers a high open-circuit voltage (Voc) potential providing that both the interface defect passivation and the band bending in the c-Si absorber are sufficient. We detail here analytical calculations of the equilibrium band bending in c-Si (ψc-Si) in Transparent Conductive Oxide (TCO)/a-Si:H emitter/c-Si absorber structures. We studied the variation of some electronic parameters (density of states, work function) according to relevant experimental values. This study introduces a discussion on the optimization of the doped emitter layer in relation with the work function of the TCO. In particular, we argue on the advantage of having a highly defective (p)a-Si:H emitter layer that maximizes ψc-Si and reduces the influence of the TCO on Voc.

Abstract: International audience; Thermally Stimulated Current (TSC) measurement, well known technique for trap level detection, was applied to derive the density of occupied states in organic solar cells. The device structure is Glass/ITO/P3HT:PCBM/Al. Analysis of the TSC spectra allows to determine the Fermi level position from the edge of the nearest band (LUMO or HOMO) (~ 0.42 eV). At that time, TSC peaks cannot be evaluated due to multiple traps that contribute to the current signal. In order to achieve a rough picture of the trap structure, Fractional TSC (FTSC) method was applied. The procedure is based on multiple temperature cycles which evaluate activation energies for different ranges of temperatures. The results reveal several plateaus, pointing out the presence of four trap levels (0.12 eV, 0.16 eV, 0.20 eV and 0.35 eV). Additionally, a curve-fitting procedure is done in order to characterize the trap parameters and achieved with five trap levels (0.059 eV, 0.12 eV, 0.14 eV, 0.20 eV and 0.35 eV) in Gaussian or exponential distribution. Four of them are in complete agreement with measured FTSC ones. Those results are very well correlated with our other characterizations by Admittance Spectroscopy (AS). The results presented here show that, in spite of the chemical differences between inorganic materials and conjugated polymers, FTCS technique can still be applied to determine the density of occupied states in these materials, as long as care is taken. Polymers are low-mobility materials with large concentrations of deep impurities.

Abstract: In this paper we first present a comparison between two grating techniques, the oscillating photocarrier grating (OPG) and the moving grating technique (MGT). The common origin of both techniques suggests that they should give the same experimental data. In this work we present measurements performed with both techniques and show their equivalence. Regarding the fact that the OPG method uses a lock-in amplifier to measure the photocurrent, while the MGT uses an electrometer due to its dc nature, we show that these techniques can be used in a complementary way, using the benefits that each one of them offers. Moreover, we present measurements of the density of states (DOS) of an amorphous silicon sample, which were made using a range of temperatures that are only achievable using both techniques. We also present a brief summary of the theory supporting these techniques, and we outline future research to improve the DOS estimation. Fil: Ventosinos, Federico. Abstract: International audience; In this paper we present new 3D numerical model to calculate the vertical and the guidance forces in high temperature superconductors taking into account the influence of the flux creep phenomena. In the suggested numerical model, we adopt a new approach of the control volume method. This approach is based on the use of an unstructured grid which can be used to model more complex geometries. A comparison of the control volume method results with experiments verifies the validity of this approach and the proposed numerical model. Based on this model, the levitation force's relaxation at different temperatures was also studied.
