This study aimed to identify the risk factors associated with CINV development in Chinese breast cancer patients receiving doxorubicin and cyclophosphamide chemotherapy.Methods: Data from 304 patients enrolled in 3 previously reported prospective antiemetic studies were included. Multivariate logistic regression models were used to predict risk factors associated with CINV occurrence. Additionally, the likelihood of treatment failure in relation to the number of risk factors in individual patients was evaluated.Results: Multivariate analysis of the entire study group revealed that obesity status (defined as body mass index/= 25.0 kg/m2) and the use of olanzapine/aprepitant- or NEPA-containing anti-emetic regimens were associated with a high likelihood, while a history of motion sickness was associated with a lower likelihood, complete response (CR), and “no nausea” in the overall phase. A history of vomiting during pregnancy was also associated with a lower likelihood of an overall CR. Patients with an increasing number of risk factors had a higher likelihood of treatment failure and shorter time to first vomiting. Those who did not achieve CR and “no nausea” in the first cycle were less likely to achieve these parameters in the subsequent cycle of chemotherapy.Conclusion: The present study confirmed previously reported risk factors for CINV in Chinese breast cancer patients receiving doxorubicin and cyclophosphamide. Further optimization of CINV control is required for patients with identifiable risk factors; olanzapine/aprepitant- or NEPA- containing prophylaxis are the preferred contemporary anti-emetics regimens for Chinese breast cancer patients undergoing doxorubicin and cyclophosphamide chemotherapy.Keywords: cytotoxic, nausea and vomiting, olanzapine, aprepitant, NEPA

Developing strategies to systematically increase the critical current, the threshold current below which the superconductivity exists, is an important goal of materials science. Here, the concept of quantum phase transition is employed to enhance the critical current of a kagome superconductor CsV 3 Sb 5 , which exhibits a charge density wave (CDW) and superconductivity that are both affected by hydrostatic pressure. As the CDW phase is rapidly suppressed under pressure, a large enhancement in the self-field critical current (I c, sf ) is recorded. The observation of a peak-like enhancement of I c, sf at the zero-temperature limit (I c, sf (0)) centered at p* ≈ 20 kbar, the same pressure where the CDW phase transition vanishes, further provides strong evidence of a zero-temperature quantum anomaly in this class of pressure-tuned superconductor. Such a peak in I c, sf (0) resembles the findings in other well-established quantum-critical superconductors, hinting at the presence of enhanced quantum fluctuations associated with the CDW phase in CsV 3 Sb 5 ., (© 2024 The Author(s). The kagome metal CsV[Formula: see text]Sb[Formula: see text] is an ideal platform to study the interplay between topology and electron correlation. To understand the fermiology of CsV[Formula: see text]Sb[Formula: see text], intensive quantum oscillation (QO) studies at ambient pressure have been conducted. However, due to the Fermi surface reconstruction by the complicated charge density wave (CDW) order, the QO spectrum is exceedingly complex, hindering a complete understanding of the fermiology. Here, we directly map the Fermi surface of the pristine CsV[Formula: see text]Sb[Formula: see text] by measuring Shubnikov-de Haas QOs up to 29 T under pressure, where the CDW order is completely suppressed. The QO spectrum of the pristine CsV[Formula: see text]Sb[Formula: see text] is significantly simpler than the one in the CDW phase, and the detected oscillation frequencies agree well with our density functional theory calculations. In particular, a frequency as large as 8,200 T is detected. Pressure-dependent QO studies further reveal a weak but noticeable enhancement of the quasiparticle effective masses on approaching the critical pressure where the CDW order disappears, hinting at the presence of quantum fluctuations. Our high-pressure QO results reveal the large, unreconstructed Fermi surface of CsV[Formula: see text]Sb[Formula: see text], paving the way to understanding the parent state of this intriguing metal in which the electrons can be organized into different ordered states., Competing Interests: Competing interests statement:The authors declare no competing interest.

The performance of the Xpert Xpress CoV-2/Flu/RSV plus and Alinity m Resp-4-Plex Assays were evaluated using 167 specimens, including 158 human respiratory specimens and 9 external quality assessment program (EQAP) samples. For respiratory specimens, CoV-2/Flu/RSV plus exhibited perfect agreement with the standard-of-care (SOC) methods (Cohen's κ: 1, 100% agreement). The overall positive and negative percent agreement (PPA and NPA) were 100%, with 95% confidence intervals of 96.50 to 100% and 85.70 to 100%, respectively. On the other hand, Resp-4-Plex revealed an almost perfect agreement with the SOC methods (Cohen's κ: 0.92, 97.71% agreement). The overall PPA and NPA were 100% (95.76 to 100%) and 88.46% (70.20 to 96.82%), respectively. For EQAP samples, the results of CoV-2/Flu/RSV plus (9/9) and Resp-4-Plex (4/4) were concordant with the expected results. The experimental limit of detection of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) was the lowest (25 copies/mL for both methods), and that of the respiratory syncytial virus was the highest (400 copies/mL for CoV-2/Flu/RSV plus and 100 copies/mL for Resp-4-Plex). Threshold cycle (Ct) value correlation showed a large positive linear association between CoV-2/Flu/RSV plus and Resp-4-Plex, with R-squared values of 0.92-0.97, and on average, the Ct values of CoV-2/Flu/RSV plus were higher than that of Resp-4-Plex by 1.86-2.78, except for Flu A1 target (-0.66). To conclude, the performance of both assay was comparable to the SOC methods for both upper and lower respiratory specimens. Implementation of these rapid assay may reinforce the diagnostic capacity for the post-pandemic co-circulation of SARS-CoV-2 and other respiratory viruses.

Retinal blood vessels structure analysis is an important step in the detection of ocular diseases such as diabetic retinopathy and retinopathy of prematurity. Accurate tracking and estimation of retinal blood vessels in terms of their diameter remains a major challenge in retinal structure analysis. In this research, we develop a rider-based Gaussian approach for accurate tracking and diameter estimation of retinal blood vessels. The diameter and curvature of the blood vessel are assumed as the Gaussian processes. The features are determined for training the Gaussian process using Radon transform. The kernel hyperparameter of Gaussian processes is optimized using Rider Optimization Algorithm for evaluating the direction of the vessel. Multiple Gaussian processes are used for detecting the bifurcations and the difference in the prediction direction is quantified. The performance of the proposed Rider-based Gaussian process is evaluated with mean and standard deviation. Our method achieved high performance with the standard deviation of 0.2499 and mean average of 0.0147, which outperformed the state-of-the-art method by 6.32%. Although the proposed model outperformed the state-of-the-art method in normal blood vessels, in future research, one can include tortuous blood vessels of different retinopathy patients, which would be more challenging due to large angle variations. We used Rider-based Gaussian process for tracking blood vessels to obtain the diameter of retinal blood vessels, and the method performed well on the "STrutred Analysis of the REtina (STARE) Database" accessed on Oct. 2020 (https://cecas.clemson.edu/~ahoover/stare/). To the best of our knowledge, this experiment is one of the most recent analysis using this type of algorithm.

Background: While others have reported severe acute respiratory syndrome-related coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2) seroprevalence studies in health care workers (HCWs), we leverage the use of a highly sensitive coronavirus antigen microarray to identify a group of seropositive health care workers who were missed by daily symptom screening that was instituted prior to any epidemiologically significant local outbreak. Given that most health care facilities rely on daily symptom screening as the primary method to identify SARS-CoV-2 among health care workers, here, we aim to determine how demographic, occupational, and clinical variables influence SARS-CoV-2 seropositivity among health care workers., Methods: We designed a cross-sectional survey of HCWs for SARS-CoV-2 seropositivity conducted from May 15th to June 30th 2020 at a 418-bed academic hospital in Orange County, California. From an eligible population of 5,349 HCWs, study participants were recruited in two ways: an open cohort, and a targeted cohort. The open cohort was open to anyone, whereas the targeted cohort that recruited HCWs previously screened for COVID-19 or work in high-risk units. A total of 1,557 HCWs completed the survey and provided specimens, including 1,044 in the open cohort and 513 in the targeted cohort. Demographic, occupational, and clinical variables were surveyed electronically. SARS-CoV-2 seropositivity was assessed using a coronavirus antigen microarray (CoVAM), which measures antibodies against eleven viral antigens to identify prior infection with 98% specificity and 93% sensitivity., Results: Among tested HCWs (n = 1,557), SARS-CoV-2 seropositivity was 10.8%, and risk factors included male gender (OR 1.48, 95% CI 1.05-2.06), exposure to COVID-19 outside of work (2.29, 1.14-4.29), working in food or environmental services (4.85, 1.51-14.85), and working in COVID-19 units (ICU: 2.28, 1.29-3.96; ward: 1.59, 1.01-2.48). Amongst 1,103 HCWs not previously screened, seropositivity was 8.0%, and additional risk factors included younger age (1.57, 1.00-2.45) and working in administration (2.69, 1.10-7.10)., Conclusion: SARS-CoV-2 seropositivity is significantly higher than reported case counts even among HCWs who are meticulously screened. The kagome metal CsV 3 Sb 5 features an unusual competition between the charge-density-wave (CDW) order and superconductivity. Evidence for time reversal symmetry breaking (TRSB) inside the CDW phase has been accumulating. Hence, the superconductivity in CsV 3 Sb 5 emerges from a TRSB normal state, potentially resulting in an exotic superconducting state. To reveal the pairing symmetry, we first investigate the effect of nonmagnetic impurity. Our results show that the superconducting critical temperature is insensitive to disorder, pointing to conventional s -wave superconductivity. Moreover, our measurements of the self-field critical current ( I c , sf ), which is related to the London penetration depth, also confirm conventional s -wave superconductivity with strong coupling. Finally, we measure I c , sf where the CDW order is removed by pressure and superconductivity emerges from the pristine normal state. Our results show that s -wave gap symmetry is retained, providing strong evidence for the presence of conventional s -wave superconductivity in CsV 3 Sb 5 irrespective of the presence of the TRSB.

Quantum materials exhibit intriguing properties with important scientific values and huge technological potential. Electrical transport measurements under hydrostatic pressure have been influential in unraveling the underlying physics of many quantum materials in bulk form. However, such measurements have not been applied widely to samples in the form of thin flakes, in which new phenomena can emerge, due to the difficulty in attaching fine wires to a thin sample suitable for high-pressure devices. Here, we utilize a home-built direct laser writing system to functionalize a diamond anvil to directly integrate the capability of conducting electrical transport measurements of thin flakes with a pressure cell. With our methodology, the culet of a diamond anvil is equipped with a set of custom-designed conducting tracks. We demonstrate the superiority of these tracks as electrodes for the studies of thin flakes by presenting the measurement of pressure-enhanced superconductivity and quantum oscillations in a flake of MoTe 2 .

Objectives: This is a prospective study evaluating NEPA in patients with breast cancer (the NEPA group), who received (neo)adjuvant AC chemotherapy (consisting of doxorubicin 60 mg/m 2 and cyclophosphamide 600 mg/m 2 ). The primary objectives were to assess the efficacy and safety of NEPA in controlling chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV). The secondary objectives were to compare CINV between the NEPA group and historical controls (the APR group) who received aprepitant in an earlier prospective randomised study., Patients and Methods: 60 patients participated in the NEPA group; 62 were in the APR group. Eligibility criteria of both groups were similar, that is, Chinese patients with breast cancer who were treated with (neo)adjuvant AC. NEPA group received NEPA and dexamethasone; APR group received aprepitant, ondansetron and dexamethasone. Individuals filled in self-reported diary, visual analogue scale for nausea and Functional Living Index-Emesis questionnaire., Results: Within the NEPA group, 70.0%, 85.7% and 60.0%, respectively reported complete response in the acute, delayed and overall phases in cycle 1 AC. When compared with the historical APR group during cycle 1 AC, NEPA group achieved significantly higher rates of complete response, complete protection, total control, 'no significant nausea' and 'no nausea' in the delayed phase; similar findings were noted in the overall phase with significantly better quality of life. Superior efficacy of NEPA was maintained over multiple cycles. COVID-19 has swept across the globe since 2019 and repeated waves of infection have been caused by different variants of the original SARS-CoV-2 (wild type), with the Omicron and Delta variants having dominated recently. Vaccination is among the most important measures in the absence of widespread use of antivirals for prevention of morbidity and mortality. Inactivated virus vaccine has been abundantly used in many countries as the primary two-dose regimen. We aim to study the safety and immunogenicity of CoronaVac (three-dose inactivated virus vaccine) and the BNT162b2 (two-dose inactivated virus vaccine followed by an mRNA vaccine) booster. Both CoronaVac and BNT162b2 boosters are generally safe and have good immunogenicity against the wild type SARS-CoV-2 and the Delta variant with the majority having neutralizing antibodies (NAb) on day 30 and day 90. However, the BNT162b2 booster is associated with a much higher proportion of positive NAb against the Omicron variant. Only 8% of day 30 and day 90 samples post CoronaVac booster have NAb against the Omicron variant. In addition, more BNT162b2 booster recipients are having positive T-cell responses using interferon gamma release assay. In places using inactivated virus vaccine as the primary two-dose scheme, the heterologous mRNA vaccine booster is safe and more immunogenic against the Omicron variant and should be considered as a preferred option during the current outbreak.

Background: There is limited work on the impact of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) on quality of life (QoL) in adriamycin-cyclophosphamide (AC)-treated patients with breast cancer. The objectives of the study were the following: (a) to confirm if symptoms of CINV led to lower QoL during AC; (b) to evaluate the pattern of changes in patients' QoL during multiple cycles of AC; and (c) to assess if the QoL in an earlier cycle affected the QoL in subsequent cycles of AC., Materials and Methods: This is a secondary pooled data analysis that included 303 Chinese patients with breast cancer who received 1,177 cycles of adjuvant AC in three prospective antiemetic studies. QoL data were based on Functional Living Index-emesis (FLIE) scored over three to four AC cycles. CINV symptoms assessed included "no significant nausea" (NSN), "significant nausea" (SN), "no vomiting" (NoV), "vomiting" (V), and complete response (CR)., Results: Across all AC cycles, the mean scores for the FLIE nausea domain for patients who experienced NSN versus SN were 10.92 versus 53.92, respectively (p < .0001), with lower scores indicating better QoL; the mean scores for the FLIE vomiting domain for patients who experienced NoV versus V were 1.44 versus 19.11, respectively (p < .0001), with similar results across subsequent cycles. Analysis of the effect of the QoL in cycle 1 on the QoL of subsequent cycles revealed the following: for the nausea domain, among patients who had cycle 1 FLIE scores ≥ versus < the mean, the corresponding scores in cycle 2 were 6.87 versus 36.71 (p < .0001); whereas those for cycle 3 were 7.07 versus 36.87 (p < .0001); and those for cycle 4 were 5.92 versus 21.48 (p < .0001). Similar findings were observed for the vomiting domain. Netupitant + palonosetron- or aprepitant/olanzapine-based antiemetics had significantly better QoL outcomes., Conclusion: CINV had a significant impact on the QoL of patients with breast cancer treated with AC over multiple cycles., Implications for Practice: In this post-hoc analysis of three prospective studies on chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV), quality of life (QoL) using contemporary antiemetic regimens in Chinese breast cancer patients receiving doxorubicin-cyclophosphamide (AC) was evaluated. During the first and subsequent AC cycles, QoL was significantly better for patients who did not experience vomiting or significant nausea. QoL in an earlier cycle affected the QoL in subsequent AC cycles. Furthermore, recent regimens involving olanzapine/aprepitant or netupitant-palonosetron were associated with a positive impact in QoL. Charge density wave (CDW) instability is often found in phase diagrams of superconductors such as cuprates and certain transition-metal dichalcogenides. This proximity to superconductivity triggers the question on whether CDW instability is responsible for the pairing of electrons in these superconductors. However, this issue remains unclear and new systems are desired to provide a better picture. Here, we report the temperature-pressure phase diagram of a recently discovered BiS 2 superconductor La 2 O 2 Bi 3 AgS 6 , which shows a possible CDW transition at T * ∼ 155 K and a superconducting transition at T c ∼ 1.0 K at ambient pressure, via electrical resistivity measurements. Upon applying pressure, T * decreases linearly and extrapolates to 0 K at 3.9 GPa. Meanwhile, T c is enhanced and reaches maximum value of 4.1 K at 3.1 GPa, forming a superconducting dome in the temperature-pressure phase diagram., (© 2021 IOP Publishing Ltd.)

The emergence of high transition temperature ( T c ) superconductivity in bulk FeSe under pressure is associated with the tuning of nematicity and magnetism. However, sorting out the relative contributions from magnetic and nematic fluctuations to the enhancement of T c remains challenging. Here, we design and conduct a series of high-pressure experiments on FeSe thin flakes. We find that as the thickness decreases the nematic phase boundary on temperature-pressure phase diagrams remains robust while the magnetic order is significantly weakened. A local maximum of T c is observed outside the nematic phase region, not far from the extrapolated nematic end point in all samples. However, the maximum T c value is reduced associated with the weakening of magnetism. No high- T c phase is observed in the thinnest sample. Our results strongly suggest that nematic fluctuations alone can only have a limited effect while magnetic fluctuations are pivotal on the enhancement of T c in FeSe.

The structural flexibility at three substitution sites in LaFeAsO enabled investigation of the relation between superconductivity and structural parameters over a wide range of crystal compositions. Substitutions of Nd for La, Sb or P for As, and F or H for O were performed. All these substitutions modify the local structural parameters, while the F/H-substitution also changes band filling. It was found that the superconducting transition temperature [Formula: see text] is strongly affected by the pnictogen height [Formula: see text] from the Fe-plane that controls the electron correlation strength and the size of the [Formula: see text] hole Fermi surface (FS). With increasing [Formula: see text], weak coupling BCS superconductivity switches to the strong coupling non-BCS one where electron correlations and the [Formula: see text] hole FS may be important.

Objective: Chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) are common with doxorubicin-cyclophosphamide (AC) chemotherapy. Recommended antiemetic regimens incorporate neurokinin-1 receptor antagonist (NK1RA), 5-hydroxytryptamine type-3 receptor antagonist (5HT3RA), corticosteroid, and dopamine antagonists. This post-hoc analysis compared results of 3 prospective antiemetic studies conducted among Chinese breast cancer patients who received (neo)adjuvant AC, in order to identify optimal antiemetic prophylaxis., Methods: A total of 304 patients were included: Group 1, ondansetron/dexamethasone (D1); Group 2, aprepitant/ondansetron/dexamethasone (D1); Group 3, aprepitant/ondansetron/dexamethasone (D1-3); Group 4, aprepitant/ondansetron/dexamethasone (D1-3)/olanzapine; and Group 5, netupitant/palonosetron/dexamethasone (D1-3). Antiemetic efficacies of Groups 3, 4, and 5 during cycle 1 of AC were individually compared with Group 1. In addition, emesis outcomes of patients in Groups 3 and 5, and those of Groups 2 and 3, were compared., Results: When comparing efficacies of a historical doublet (5HT3RA/dexamethasone) with triplet antiemetic regimens (NK1RA/5HT3RA/dexamethasone) with/without olanzapine, complete response (CR) percentages and quality of life (QOL) in overall phase of cycle 1 AC were compared between Group 1 and the other groups: Group 1 vs. 3, 41.9% vs. 38.3% ( P = 0.6849); Group 1 vs. 4, 41.9% vs. 65.0% ( P = 0.0107); and Group 1 vs. 5, 41.9% vs. 60.0% ( P = 0.0460). Groups 4 and 5 achieved a better QOL. When comparing netupitant-based (Group 3) with aprepitant-based (Group 5) triplet antiemetics, CR percentages were 38.3% vs. 60.0%, respectively ( P = 0.0176); Group 5 achieved a better QOL. When comparing 1 day (Group 2) vs. 3 day (Group 3) dexamethasone, CR percentages were 46.8% and 38.3%, respectively ( P = 0.3459); Group 3 had a worse QOL., Conclusions: Aprepitant-containing triplets were non-superior to doublet antiemetics. Netupitant-containing triplets and adding olanzapine to aprepitant-containing triplets were superior to doublets. Netupitant/palonosetron/dexamethasone was superior to aprepitant/ondansetron/dexamethasone. We report the fabrication of a solution-processed n-type Thin Film Transistor (TFT) with current on/off ratios of 10 4 , a turn-on voltage ( V ON ) of 1.2 V and a threshold voltage ( V T ) of 6.2 V. The TFT incorporates an insoluble and intractable dielectric layer ( k = 7-9) prepared in situ from solution-processed and then photopolymerised ligand-stabilised, inorganic/organic TiO 2 nanorods. A solution processed zinc oxide (ZnO) layer acts as the semiconductor. The new surface-modified TiO 2 nanorods were synthesised using a ligand replacement process with a monolayer coating of photopolymerisable 10-undecynylphosphonic acid (10UCYPA) to render them both soluble in common organic solvents and be photopolymerisable using UV-illumination after having been deposited on substrate surfaces from solution and drying., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts to declare., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.)

Objectives: Chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) are distressing symptoms. This randomized study evaluated the antiemetic efficacies of standard antiemetic regimen with/without olanzapine., Patients and Methods: Eligible patients were chemotherapy-naive Chinese breast cancer patients who were planned for (neo)adjuvant doxorubicin/cyclophosphamide. Antiemetic regimen for all studied population included aprepitant, ondansetron and dexamethasone; patients were randomized to Olanzapine (with olanzapine) or Standard arms (without olanzapine). Patients filled in self-reported diaries and completed visual analogue scales for nausea, as well as Functional Living Index-Emesis questionnaires. Blood profiles including fasting glucose and lipids were monitored., Results: 120 patients were randomized. In Cycle 1 doxorubicin/cyclophosphamide, the Olanzapine arm had significantly higher rates of "Complete Response" than the Standard arm: 65.0% vs 38.3% in the overall period (p = 0.0035), 70.0% vs 51.7% in the acute period (p = 0.0397) and 92.9% vs 74.2% in the delayed period (p = 0.0254). Olanzapine arm also had significantly higher rates of "No significant nausea" and "No nausea" during all 3 time-frames and better QOL. Similar findings were also revealed throughout multiple cycles. Pre-study abnormalities in glucose and lipids occurred in 39.7% and 34.2% of the studied population respectively; there were no differences in these parameters between the two arms at end-of-study assessment., Conclusion: The addition of olanzapine to standard aprepitant-based antiemetic regimen provides clinically meaningful improvement in controlling CINV. This was associated with a positive impact on QOL and tolerable toxicity profiles among Chinese breast cancer patients receiving doxorubicin/cyclophosphamide chemotherapy. Chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) are highly distressing symptoms for cancer patients undergoing cytotoxic chemotherapy. This dataset was obtained from a homogenous group of Chinese breast cancer patients who were uniformly planned to receive a highly emetogenic (neo)adjuvant chemotherapy regimen, consisting of doxorubicin and cyclophosphamide (commonly known as AC). Patients were being randomized to one of the two antiemetic regimens: aprepitant, ondansetron and dexamethasone with (the Olanzapine arm) or without olanzapine (the Standard arm). Patients underwent self-reported diaries and questionnaires to record their nausea and vomiting symptoms, use of rescue medication as well as their quality of life (QOL). The primary and secondary endpoints have focused on efficacy analysis during the first cycle of AC chemotherapy; the results have been reported in The Breast [1]. In this Data in Brief article, we provide outcome of the analysis of data collected during multiple cycles of chemotherapy. The bulk electronic structure of T&#95;{d}-MoTe&#95;{2} features large hole Fermi pockets at the Brillouin zone center (Γ) and two electron Fermi surfaces along the Γ-X direction. However, the large hole pockets, whose existence has important implications for the Weyl physics of T&#95;{d}-MoTe&#95;{2}, has never been conclusively detected in quantum oscillations. This raises doubt about the realizability of Majorana states in T&#95;{d}-MoTe&#95;{2}, because these exotic states rely on the existence of Weyl points, which originated from the same band structure predicted by density functional theory (DFT). Here, we report an unambiguous detection of these elusive hole pockets via Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) quantum oscillations. At ambient pressure, the quantum oscillation frequencies for these pockets are 988 and 1513 T, when the magnetic field is applied along the c axis. The quasiparticle effective masses m^{*} associated with these frequencies are 1.50 and 2.77 m&#95;{e}, respectively, indicating the importance of Coulomb interactions in this system. We further measure the SdH oscillations under pressure. At 13 kbar, we detected a peak at 1798 T with m^{*}=2.86m&#95;{e}. Relative to the oscillation data at a lower pressure, the amplitude of this peak experienced an enhancement, which can be attributed to the reduced curvature of the hole pockets under pressure. Combining our experimental data with DFT+U calculations, where U is the Hubbard parameter, our results shed light on why these important hole pockets have not been detected until now.

Novel bichalcogenides with the general composition (Li 2 TM)ChO (TM = Mn, Co; Ch = S, Se) were synthesized by single-step solid-state reactions. These compounds possess cubic anti-perovskite crystal structure with Pm3̅ m symmetry; TM and Li are disordered on the crystallographic site 3c. According to Goldschmidt tolerance factor calculations, the available space at the 3c site is too large for Li + and TM 2+ ions. As cathode materials, all title compounds perform less prominent in lithium-ion battery setups in comparison to the already known TM = Fe homologue; e.g., (Li 2 Co)SO has a charge density of about 70 mAh g -1 at a low charge rate. Nevertheless, the title compounds extend the chemical flexibility of the anti-perovskites, revealing their outstanding chemical optimization potential as lithium battery cathode material.

We report the synthesis of the first stable, solution-processable and photocrosslinkable hybrid organic/inorganic titanium dioxide nanorods as 'hairy rods' coated with phosphonate ligands with photoreactive coumarin groups located in a terminal position. The relationships between the chemical structure of the diethyl-ω-[(7-oxycoumaryl)- n -alkyl]phosphonate ligands on the ligand exchange rate (LER) and the solubility of the resultant ligand-stabilized titanium dioxide nanorods in organic solvents are elucidated. These TiO 2 nanorods, with an organic ligand coating, are short enough (aspect ratio = 5-8) to be dissolved in chlorobenzene at high concentrations, but long enough to form lyotropic nematic liquid crystals. These colloidal solutions are used to deposit a thin, uniform layer of hybrid organic/inorganic TiO 2 nanorods with their long axes in the plane of a flat, smooth substrate through a self-organization process. Standard photolithographic patterning creates an insoluble dielectric layer of the desired thickness, smoothness and uniformity and with a dielectric constant of sufficient magnitude, k = 8, suitable for the fabrication of multilayer, plastic electronic devices using solution-based fabrication techniques, such as ink-jet printing, used in roll-to-roll manufacturing., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts to declare., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.)

Two novel compounds, LiCu Ch ( Ch = Se or Te), were synthesized by direct reaction between elements in closed ampules inside corundum crucibles. Both compounds are highly air-sensitive and possess an anti-PbClF crystal structure, which contains Cu Ch layer analogues to the Fe[As/Se] layers in Fe-based superconductors. In electrochemical battery cells, Li can be almost completely extracted from LiCuSe, but the reverse reaction is only partly successful and Li 2 Se and Cu 2- x Se are formed instead. LiCuSe exhibits a temperature independent and slightly positive magnetic susceptibility. From 7 Li NMR measurements, the activation energy of the Li ion diffusion process is about 0.5 eV but is slightly lower for LiCuTe as compared to LiCuSe. Also, the small and almost temperature independent NMR shifts of the 7 Li nucleus indicate the absence of Pauli paramagnetism in these compounds, consistent with a 3 d 10 full valence state of the Cu ions.

Narrow-band photoconductivity with a spectral width of 0.16 eV is obtained from solution-processed colloidal ZnO nanocrystals beneath the band-edge at 2.25 eV. A new model involving electron transfer from deep defects to discrete shallow donors is introduced to explain the narrow spectrum and the exponential form of the current rise and decay transients. The defects are tentatively assigned to neutral oxygen vacancies. The photocurrent responsivity can be enhanced by storage in air, and this correlates with the formation of carbonate surface species by capture of carbon dioxide during storage. This controllability is exploited to develop a low-cost and scalable photolithographic approach to pixelate photodetectors for applications such as object discrimination, sensing, etc. The spectral response can be spatially patterned so that dual (ultraviolet and green) and single (ultraviolet only) wavelength detecting ZnO pixels can be produced on the same substrate. This presents a new sensor mode with applications in security or full color imaging.

Small single crystals of Sr 2 Fe 3 Ch 2 O 3 (Ch = S, Se) have been synthesized by flux methods, and bulk materials have been obtained by solid state reactions. Both compounds are isostructural to the compound Sr 2 Co 3 S 2 O 3 (space group Pbam), which contains a novel hybrid spin ladder: a combination of a 2-leg rectangular ladder and a necklace ladder. The 2-leg ladder acts as a well-defined magnetic entity, while intimate magnetic coupling to the necklace ladder induces three successive phase transitions in the range of 40-120 K in each composition (Ch = S or Se), as revealed by Mössbauer spectroscopy, thermodynamics, and magnetometry. The complex magnetic behaviors can be explained by the unique spin-lattice topology.

Through single-step solid-state reactions, a series of novel bichalcogenides with the general composition (Li 2 Fe)ChO (Ch = S, Se, Te) are successfully synthesized. (Li 2 Fe)ChO (Ch = S, Se) possess cubic anti-perovskite crystal structures, where Fe and Li are completely disordered on a common crystallographic site (3c). According to Goldschmidt calculations, Li + and Fe 2+ are too small for their common atomic position and exhibit large thermal displacements in the crystal structure models, implying high cation mobility. Both compounds (Li 2 Fe)ChO (Ch = S, Se) were tested as cathode materials against graphite anodes (single cells); They perform outstandingly at very high charge rates (270 mA g -1 , 80 cycles) and, at a charge rate of 30 mA g -1 , exhibit charge capacities of about 120 mA h g -1 . Compared to highly optimized Li 1-x CoO 2 cathode materials, these novel anti-perovskites are easily produced at cost reductions by up to 95% and, yet, possess a relative specific charge capacity of 75%. Moreover, these iron-based anti-perovskites are comparatively friendly to the environment and (Li 2 Fe)ChO (Ch = S, Se) melt congruently; the latter is advantageous for manufacturing pure materials in large amounts.

From stoichiometric amounts of CaO, Fe, and Se, pure powders and single crystals of quaternary [Formula: see text] can be obtained by solid-state reaction and self-flux growth, respectively. The as-synthesized compound exhibits a polymorphic crystal structure, where the two modifications have different stacking sequences of [Formula: see text] layers. The two polymorphs have similar unit cells but different crystal symmetries (Cmc2 1 and Pnma), of which the former is non-centrosymmetric. Fe is divalent (d 6 ) and high-spin, as proven by X-ray spectroscopy, Mössbauer spectroscopy, and powder neutron diffraction data. The latter two, in combination with magnetic susceptibility and specific heat data, reveal a long-range antiferromagnetic spin order (T N = 160 K) with a minor spin canting. CaFeSeO is an electronic insulator, as confirmed by resistivity measurements and density functional theory calculations. The latter also suggest a relatively small energy difference between the two polymorphs, explaining their intimate intergrowth.

Graphene oxide (GO) resistive memories offer the promise of low-cost environmentally sustainable fabrication, high mechanical flexibility and high optical transparency, making them ideally suited to future flexible and transparent electronics applications. However, the dimensional and temporal scalability of GO memories, i.e., how small they can be made and how fast they can be switched, is an area that has received scant attention. Moreover, a plethora of GO resistive switching characteristics and mechanisms has been reported in the literature, sometimes leading to a confusing and conflicting picture. Consequently, the potential for graphene oxide to deliver high-performance memories operating on nanometer length and nanosecond time scales is currently unknown. Here we address such shortcomings, presenting not only the smallest (50 nm), fastest (sub-5 ns), thinnest (8 nm) GO-based memory devices produced to date, but also demonstrate that our approach provides easily accessible multilevel (4-level, 2-bit per cell) storage capabilities along with excellent endurance and retention performance-all on both rigid and flexible substrates. Via comprehensive experimental characterizations backed-up by detailed atomistic simulations, we also show that the resistive switching mechanism in our Pt/GO/Ti/Pt devices is driven by redox reactions in the interfacial region between the top (Ti) electrode and the GO layer.

We report on the syntheses and characterizations of single crystalline and polycrystalline Sr 2 Co 3 S 2 O 3 with a novel crystal structure type. It contains Co-O 2-leg rectangular ladders and necklace ladders. The two ladders share common legs and construct a hybrid spin ladder. A rare meridional heteroleptic octahedral coordination is found for the Co 2+ ions in the 2-leg ladder. Within the necklace ladders, the Co 2+ ions are in trans-octahedral coordination. An antiferromagnetic order is observed at T N  ~ 267 K, while a broad maximum in magnetic susceptibility is found below T N . This relatively high ordering temperature among Co-based ladder compounds is related to the highly anisotropic mer-coordination of the Co 2+ ions. The trans-octahedrally coordinated Co 2+ ions, on the other hand, corresponds to the possible short-range magnetic correlations through dimers with an effective . This results in a rare situation that spin ordering and spin dimers coexist down to 2 K.

Background: Palliative cancer patients suffer from high levels of distress. There are physiological changes in relation to the level of perceived distress., Objective: To study the efficacy of 5 minutes of mindful breathing (MB) for rapid reduction of distress in a palliative setting. Its effect to the physiological changes of the palliative cancer patients was also examined., Methods: This is a randomized controlled trial. Sixty palliative cancer patients were recruited. They were randomly assigned to either 5 minutes of MB or normal listening arms. The changes of perceived distress, blood pressure, pulse rate, breathing rate, galvanic skin response, and skin surface temperature of the patients were measured at baseline, after intervention, and 10 minutes post-intervention., Results: There was significant reduction of perceived distress, blood pressure, pulse rate, breathing rate, and galvanic skin response; also, significant increment of skin surface temperature in the 5-minute MB group. The changes in the 5-minute breathing group were significantly higher than the normal listening group., Conclusion: Five-minute MB is a quick, easy to administer, and effective therapy for rapid reduction of distress in palliative setting. There is a need for future study to establish the long-term efficacy of the therapy.

Increased urinary albumin excretion is not simply an aftermath of glomerular injury, but is also involved in the progression of diabetic nephropathy (DN). Whereas Toll-like receptors (TLRs) are incriminated in the renal inflammation of DN, whether and how albumin is involved in the TLR-related renal inflammatory response remains to be clarified. Here, we showed that both TLR2 and TLR4, one of their putative endogenous ligands [heat shock protein 70 (HSP70)] and nuclear factor-κB promoter activity were markedly elevated in the kidneys of diabetic mice. A deficiency of TLR4 but not of TLR2 alleviated albuminuria, tubulointerstitial fibrosis and inflammation induced by diabetes. The protection against renal injury in diabetic Tlr4(-/-) mice was associated with reduced tubular injuries and preserved cubilin levels, rather than amelioration of glomerular lesions. In vitro studies revealed that albumin, a stronger inducer than high glucose (HG), induced the release of HSP70 from proximal tubular cells. HSP70 blockade ameliorated albumin-induced inflammatory mediators. HSP70 triggered the production of inflammatory mediators in a TLR4-dependent manner. Moreover, HSP70 inhibition in vivo ameliorated diabetes-induced albuminuria, inflammatory response and tubular injury. Finally, we found that individuals with DN had higher levels of TLR4 and HSP70 in the dilated tubules than non-diabetic controls. Thus, activation of the HSP70-TLR4 axis, stimulated at least in part by albumin, in the tubular cell is a newly identified mechanism associated with induction of tubulointerstitial inflammation and aggravation of pre-existing microalbuminuria in the progression of DN., (© 2015. Late fusion is one of the most effective approaches to enhance recognition accuracy through combining prediction scores of multiple classifiers, each of which is trained by a specific feature or model. The existing methods generally use a fixed fusion weight for one classifier over all samples, and ignore the fact that each classifier may perform better or worse for different subsets of samples. In order to address this issue, we propose a novel sample specific late fusion (SSLF) method. Specifically, we cast late fusion into an information propagation process that diffuses the fusion weights of labeled samples to the individual unlabeled samples, and enforce positive samples to have higher fusion scores than negative samples. Upon this process, the optimal fusion weight for each sample is identified, while positive samples are pushed toward the top at the fusion score rank list to achieve better accuracy. In this paper, two SSLF methods are presented. The first method is ranking SSLF (R-SSLF), which is based on graph Laplacian with RankSVM style constraints. We formulate and solve the problem with a fast gradient projection algorithm; the second method is infinite push SSLF (I-SSLF), which combines graph Laplacian with infinite push constraints. I-SSLF is a l∞ norm constrained optimization problem and can be solved by an efficient alternating direction method of multipliers method. Extensive experiments on both large-scale image and video data sets demonstrate the effectiveness of our methods. In addition, in order to make our method scalable to support large data sets, the AnchorGraph model is employed to propagate information on a subset of samples (anchor points) and then reconstruct the entire graph to get the weights of all samples. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first method that supports learning of sample specific fusion weights for late fusion.

Organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) incorporating grid transparent conducting electrodes (TCEs) with wide grid line spacing suffer from an inability to transfer charge carriers across the gaps in the grids to promote light emission in these areas. High luminance OLEDs fabricated using a hybrid TCE composed of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS PH1000) or regioregular poly(3-hexylthiophene)-wrapped semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (rrP3HT-SWCNT) in combination with a nanometre thin gold grid are reported here. OLEDs fabricated using the hybrid gold grid/PH1000 TCE have a luminance of 18 000 cd m(-2) at 9 V; the same as the reference indium tin oxide (ITO) OLED. The gold grid/rrP3HT-SWCNT OLEDs have a lower luminance of 8260 cd m(-2) at 9 V, which is likely due to a rougher rrP3HT-SWCNT surface. These results demonstrate that the hybrid gold grid/PH1000 TCE is a promising replacement for ITO in future plastic electronics applications including OLEDs and organic photovoltaics. For applications where surface roughness is not critical, e.g. electrochromic devices or discharge of static electricity, the gold grid/rrP3HT-SWCNT hybrid TCE can be employed.

Insertion of CS2 into the thermally unstable nickel(III) hydride [PPN][Ni(H)(P(o-C6H3-3-SiMe3-2-S)3)] (1), freshly prepared from the reaction of [PPN][Ni(OC6H5)P(C6H3-3-SiMe3-2-S)3] and 4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-1,3,2-dioxaborolane (HBpin; pin = OCMe2CMe2O) in tetrahydrofuran at -80 °C via a metathesis reaction, readily affords [PPN][Ni(III)(κ(1)-S2CH)(P(o-C6H3-3-SiMe3-2-S)3)] (2) featuring a κ(1)-S2CH moiety.

A network of fibers comprising orthorhombic molybdenum trioxide (α-MoO(3)) crystals were synthesized using paper as template via a biomorphic approach. The template was completely removed by annealing the sample at 600°C for 5 min. Monoclinic MoO(3) was formed and consequently converted into orthorhombic α-MoO(3) after prolonged annealing. Three milligrams of the biomorphic α-MoO(3) could degrade up to 90% of a methyl violet aqueous solution with a concentration of 20 mg/L under normal visible light. The size of the α-MoO(3) grains and the porosity of the biomorphic sample affected catalytic performance.

Two-dimensional metallic broadband absorbers on a SiO(2)/Ag/Si substrate were experimentally studied. The absorptivity of such structure can be increased by tailoring the ratio of disk size to the unit cell area. The metallic disk exhibits a localized surface plasmon polariton (LSPP) mode for both TE and TM polarizations. A broadband thermal emitter can be realized because the LSPP mode is independent of the periodicities. By manipulating the ratios and disk sizes, a high-performance, wide-angle, polarization-independent dual band absorber was experimentally achieved. Aims/hypothesis: Substantial evidence suggests a link between elevated inflammation and development of insulin resistance. Toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2) recognises a large number of lipid-containing molecules and transduces inflammatory signalling in a variety of cell types, including insulin-responsive cells. Considering the contribution of the fatty acid composition in TLR2-depedent signalling, we hypothesised that the inflammatory signals transduced by TLR2 contribute to insulin resistance., Methods: Mice deficient in TLR2 were used to investigate the in vivo roles of TLR2 in initiating and maintaining inflammation-associated insulin resistance and energy homeostasis., Results: We first recapitulated the observation with elevated expression of TLR2 and inflammatory cytokines in white adipose tissue and liver of ob/ob mice. Aged or high-fat-fed TLR2-deficient mice were protected from obesity and adipocyte hypertrophy compared with wild-type mice. Moreover, mice lacking TLR2 exhibited improved glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity regardless of feeding them regular chow or a high-fat diet. This is accompanied by reductions in expression of inflammatory cytokines and activation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) in a liver-specific manner. The attenuated hepatic inflammatory cytokine expression and related signalling are correlated with increased insulin action specifically in the liver in TLR2-deficient mice, reflected by increased insulin-stimulated protein kinase B (Akt) phosphorylation and IRS1 tyrosine phosphorylation and increased insulin-suppressed hepatocyte glucose production., Conclusions/interpretation: The absence of TLR2 attenuates local inflammatory cytokine expression and related signalling and increases insulin action specifically in the liver. Thus, our work has identified TLR2 as a key mediator of hepatic inflammation-related signalling and insulin resistance.

A series of 3-O-acylated (-)-epigallocatechins were synthesized and their inhibition of steroid 5α-reductase was studied. They were prepared from the reaction of EGCG with tert-butyldimethylsilyl chloride followed by reductive cleavage of the ester bond. The resultant (-)-epigallocatechins penta-O-tert-butyldimethylsilyl ether was esterified with different fatty acids then desilylated to provide the corresponding products. The activity of 3-O-acylated (-)-epigallocatechins increased with the increasing carbon numbers of the fatty acid moiety, reaching maximum for 16 carbon atoms (compound 4h) with an IC50 of 0.53 μM, which was ∼12-fold more potent than EGCG (IC50=6.29 μM). Introduction of monounsaturated fatty acid provided the most potent compound 6 (IC50=0.48 μM), which showed moderate anti-tumor activity in vivo., (Copyright © 2010 Elsevier Masson SAS. Protein farnesyltransferase inhibitors (FTIs) have shown clinical responses in hematologic malignancies, but the mechanisms are unclear. To better understand potential mechanisms of action, we have studied effects of the FTI tipifarnib on inflammatory responses in vitro and in vivo. In a human leukemia cell line THP-1, tipifarnib inhibited lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced transcription of chemokines [monocyte chemotactic protein (MCP)-1 and MCP-2], cytokines [interleukin (IL)-1beta, IL-6, and interferon (IFN)beta], signaling molecules (MyD88 and STAT-1), proteases [matrix metalloproteinase (MMP-9)], and receptors (urokinase receptor). Tipifarnib also inhibited LPS-induced secretion of MMP-9, IL-6, MCP-1, and IL-1beta in THP-1 cells. In primary human peripheral blood mononuclear cells, dose-dependent inhibition of LPS-induced tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha, IL-6, MCP-1, and IL-1beta by tipifarnib was observed with no evidence of cytotoxicity. Similar results were obtained in vivo in a murine model of LPS-induced inflammation, where pretreatment with tipifarnib resulted in significant inhibition of TNF-alpha, IL-6, MCP-1, IL-1beta, and MIP-1alpha production. Tipifarnib had no effect in vitro or in vivo on LPS-induced IL-8. Studies in THP-1 cells to address potential mechanism(s) showed that tipifarnib partially inhibited LPS-induced p38 phosphorylation. Tipifarnib significantly inhibited inhibitory subunit of nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-kappaB) (IkappaB)-alpha degradation and p65 nuclear translocation induced by LPS, but not by tumor necrosis factor-alpha, IL-1alpha, or toll-like receptor (TLR)2 ligand, suggesting that the target for inhibition of NF-kappaB activation was exclusive to the LPS/TLR4 signal pathway. The extent of IkappaB-alpha degradation inhibition did not correlate with inhibition of Ras farnesylation, indicating that Ras was not the target for the observed anti-inflammatory activity of tipifarnib. Our findings differ from those for other FTIs, which may have relevance for their dissimilar activity in specific tumor repertoires.

Toll-like receptors (TLRs) recognize molecular patterns preferentially expressed by pathogens. In endosomes, TLR9 is activated by unmethylated bacterial DNA, resulting in proinflammatory cytokine secretion via the adaptor protein MyD88. We demonstrate that CpG oligonucleotides activate a TLR9-independent pathway initiated by two Src family kinases, Hck and Lyn, which trigger a tyrosine phosphorylation-mediated signaling cascade. This cascade induces actin cytoskeleton reorganization, resulting in cell spreading, adhesion, and motility. CpG-induced actin polymerization originates at the plasma membrane, rather than in endosomes. Chloroquine, an inhibitor of CpG-triggered cytokine secretion, blocked TLR9/MyD88-dependent cytokine secretion as expected but failed to inhibit CpG-induced Src family kinase activation and its dependent cellular responses. Knock down of Src family kinase expression or the use of specific kinase inhibitors blocked MyD88-dependent signaling and cytokine secretion, providing evidence that tyrosine phosphorylation is both CpG induced and an upstream requirement for the engagement of TLR9. The Src family pathway intersects the TLR9-MyD88 pathway by promoting the tyrosine phosphorylation of TLR9 and the recruitment of Syk to this receptor.

Background: Kocuria, previously classified into the genus of Micrococcus, is commonly found on human skin. Two species, K. rosea and K. kristinae, are etiologically associated with catheter-related bacteremia., Case Presentation: We describe the first case of K. kristinae infection associated with acute cholecystitis. The microorganism was isolated from the bile of a 56-year old Chinese man who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy. He developed post-operative fever that resolved readily after levofloxacin treatment., Conclusion: Our report of K. kristinae infection associated with acute cholecystitis expands the clinical spectrum of infections caused by this group of bacteria. With increasing number of recent reports describing the association between Kocuria spp. and infectious diseases, the significance of their isolation from clinical specimens cannot be underestimated. A complete picture of infections related to Kocuria spp. will have to await the documentation of more clinical cases.
