Liger is an adaptive optics (AO) fed imager and integral field spectrograph (IFS) designed to take advantage of the Keck All-sky Precision Adaptive-optics (KAPA) upgrade to the Keck I telescope. Liger adapts the design of the InfraRed Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) for the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) to Keck by implementing a new imager and re-imaging optics. The performance of the imager is critical as it sequentially feeds the spectrograph and contains essential components such as the pupil wheel, filter wheel, and pupil viewing camera. We present the design and structural analysis of the Liger imager optical assembly including static, modal, and thermal simulations. We present the fabrication as well as the full assembly and characterization plan. The imager will be assembled bench-top in a clean room utilizing a coordinate-measuring machine (CMM) for warm alignment. To ensure optimal performance, the imager will be characterized in a test cryostat before integration with the full Liger instrument. This comprehensive approach to characterization ensures the precision and reliability of the imager, enhancing the observational capabilities of Liger and W.M. Keck Observatory.

Time to an event of interest over a lifetime is a central measure of the clinical benefit of an intervention used in a health technology assessment (HTA). Within the same trial multiple end-points may also be considered. For example, overall and progression-free survival time for different drugs in oncology studies. A common challenge is when an intervention is only effective for some proportion of the population who are not clinically identifiable. Therefore, latent group membership as well as separate survival models for groups identified need to be estimated. However, follow-up in trials may be relatively short leading to substantial censoring. We present a general Bayesian hierarchical framework that can handle this complexity by exploiting the similarity of cure fractions between end-points; accounting for the correlation between them and improving the extrapolation beyond the observed data. Assuming exchangeability between cure fractions facilitates the borrowing of information between end-points. We show the benefits of using our approach with a motivating example, the CheckMate 067 phase 3 trial consisting of patients with metastatic melanoma treated with first line therapy.

Liger is a next-generation near-infrared imager and integral field spectrograph (IFS) planned for the W.M. Keck Observatory. Liger is designed to take advantage of improved adaptive optics (AO) from the Keck All-Sky Precision Adaptive Optics (KAPA) upgrade currently underway. Liger operates at 0.84-2.45 $\mu$m with spectral resolving powers of R$\sim$4,000-10,000. Liger makes use of a sequential imager and spectrograph design allowing for simultaneous observations. There are two spectrograph modes: a lenslet with high spatial sampling of 14 and 31 mas, and a slicer with 75 and 150 mas sampling with an expanded field of view. Two pick-off mirrors near the imager detector direct light to these two IFS channels. We present the design and structural analysis for the imager detector and IFS pick-off mirror mounting assembly that will be used to align and maintain stability throughout its operation. A piezoelectric actuator will be used to step through $\rm3\,mm$ of travel during alignment of the instrument to determine the optimal focus for both the detector and pick-off mirrors which will be locked in place during normal operation. We will demonstrate that the design can withstand the required gravitational and shipping loads and can be aligned within the positioning tolerances for the optics., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, 3 tables

Liger is a second generation near-infrared imager and integral field spectrograph (IFS) for the W. M. Keck Observatory that will utilize the capabilities of the Keck All-sky Precision Adaptive-optics (KAPA) system. Liger operates at a wavelength range of 0.81 {\mu}m - 2.45 {\mu}m and utilizes a slicer and a lenslet array IFS with varying spatial plate scales and fields of view resulting in hundreds of modes available to the astronomer. Because of the high level of complexity in the raw data formats for the slicer and lenslet IFS modes, Liger must be designed in conjunction with a Data Reduction System (DRS) which will reduce data from the instrument in real-time and deliver science-ready data products to the observer. The DRS will reduce raw imager and IFS frames from the readout system and provide 2D and 3D data products via custom quick-look visualization tools suited to the presentation of IFS data. The DRS will provide the reduced data to the Keck Observatory Archive (KOA) and will be available to astronomers for offline post-processing of observer data. Liger is an adaptive optics (AO) fed imager and integral field spectrograph (IFS) designed to take advantage of the Keck All-sky Precision Adaptive-optics (KAPA) upgrade for the W.M. Keck Observatory. We present the design and analysis of the imager optical assembly including the spectrograph Re-Imaging Optics (RIO) which transfers the beam path from the imager focal plane to the IFS slicer module and lenslet array. Each imager component and the first two RIO mechanisms are assembled and individually aligned on the same optical plate. Baffling suppresses background radiation and scattered light, and a pupil viewing camera allows the imager detector to focus on an image of the telescope pupil. The optical plate mounts on an adapter frame for alignment of the overall system. The InfraRed Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) is the first-light client instrument for the Narrow Field Infrared Adaptive Optics System (NFIRAOS) on the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT). Now approaching the end of its final design phase, we provide an overview of the instrument control software. The design is challenging since IRIS has interfaces with many systems at different stages of development (e.g., NFIRAOS, telescope control system, observatory sequencers), and will be built using the newly-developed TMT Common Software (CSW), which provides framework code (Java/Scala), and services (e.g., commands, telemetry). Lower-level software will be written in a combination of Java and C/C++ to communicate with hardware, such as motion controllers and infrared detectors. We present observations of ionized gas outflows in eleven z$ =1.39-2.59$ radio-loud quasar host galaxies. Data was taken with the integral field spectrograph (IFS) OSIRIS and the adaptive optics system at the W.M. Keck Observatory targeting nebular emission lines (H$\beta$, [OIII], H$\alpha$, [NII] and [SII]) redshifted into the near-infrared (1-2.4 \micron). Outflows with velocities of 500 - 1700 km\,s$^{-1}$ are detected in 10 systems on scales ranging from $<1$ kpc to 10 kpc with outflow rates from 8-2400 M$_\odot$yr$^{-1}$. For five sources, the outflow momentum rates are 4-80 times $L_{AGN}$/c, consistent with outflows being driven by an energy conserving shock. The five other outflows are either driven by radiation pressure or an isothermal shock. The outflows are the dominant source of gas depletion, and we find no evidence for star formation along the outflow paths. For eight objects, the outflow paths are consistent with the orientation of the jets. Yet, given the calculated pressures, we find no evidence of the jets currently doing work on these galactic-scale ionized outflows. We find that galactic-scale feedback occurs well before galaxies establish a substantial fraction of their stellar mass, as expected from local scaling relationships., Comment: 39 pages, 18 figures, 7 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

Liger is a next-generation near-infrared imager and integral field spectrograph (IFS) for the W.M. Keck Observatory designed to take advantage of the Keck All-Sky Precision Adaptive Optics (KAPA) upgrade. Liger will operate at spectral resolving powers between R$\sim$4,000 - 10,000 over a wavelength range of 0.8-2.4$\mu$m. Liger takes advantage of a sequential imager and spectrograph design that allows for simultaneous observations between the two channels using the same filter wheel and cold pupil stop. We present the design for the filter wheels and pupil mask and their location and tolerances in the optical design. The filter mechanism is a multi-wheel design drawing from the heritage of the current Keck/OSIRIS imager single wheel design. The Liger multi-wheel configuration is designed to allow future upgrades to the number and range of filters throughout the life of the instrument. The pupil mechanism is designed to be similarly upgradeable with the option to add multiple pupil mask options. A smaller wheel mechanism allows the user to select the desired pupil mask with open slots being designed in for future upgrade capabilities. An ideal pupil would match the shape of the image formed of the primary and would track its rotation. For different pupil shapes without tracking we model the additional exposure time needed to achieve the same signal to noise of an ideal pupil and determine that a set of fixed masks of different shapes provides a mechanically simpler system with little compromise in performance., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, 1 table

Liger is a next generation adaptive optics (AO) fed integral field spectrograph (IFS) and imager for the W. M. Keck Observatory. This new instrument is being designed to take advantage of the upgraded AO system provided by Keck All-Sky Precision Adaptive-optics (KAPA). Liger will provide higher spectral resolving power (R$\sim$4,000-10,000), wider wavelength coverage ($\sim$0.8-2.4 $\mu$m), and larger fields of view than any current IFS. We present the design and analysis for a custom-made dewar chamber for characterizing the Liger opto-mechanical system. This dewar chamber is designed to test and assemble the Liger imaging camera and slicer IFS components while being adaptable for future experiments. The vacuum chamber will operate below $10^{-5}$ Torr with a cold shield that will be kept below 90 K. The dewar test chamber will be mounted to an optical vibration isolation platform and further isolated from the cryogenic and vacuum systems with bellows. The cold head and vacuums will be mounted to a custom cart that will also house the electronics and computer that interface with the experiment. This test chamber will provide an efficient means of calibrating and characterizing the Liger instrument and performing future experiments., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

The InfraRed Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) is a first-light instrument for the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) that will be used to sample the corrected adaptive optics field by the Narrow-Field Infrared Adaptive Optics System (NFIRAOS) with a near-infrared (0.8 - 2.4 $\mu$m) imaging camera and integral field spectrograph. To better understand IRIS science specifications we use the IRIS data simulator to characterize relative photometric precision and accuracy across the IRIS imaging camera 34"x34" field of view. Because the Point Spread Function (PSF) varies due to the effects of anisoplanatism, we use the Anisoplanatic and Instrumental Reconstruction of Off-axis PSFs for AO (AIROPA) software package to conduct photometric measurements on simulated frames using PSF-fitting as the PSF varies in single-source, binary, and crowded field use cases. We report photometric performance of the imaging camera as a function of the instrumental noise properties including dark current and read noise. Using the same methods, we conduct comparisons of photometric performance with reconstructed PSFs, in order to test the veracity of the current PSF-Reconstruction algorithms for IRIS/TMT., Comment: SPIE 2020, 16 pages, 10 figures, 4 tables

We present detailed observations of photoionization conditions and galaxy kinematics in eleven z$=1.39-2.59$ radio-loud quasar host galaxies. Data was taken with OSIRIS integral field spectrograph (IFS) and the adaptive optics system at the W.M. Keck Observatory that targeted nebular emission lines (H$\beta$,[OIII],H$\alpha$,[NII]) redshifted into the near-infrared (1-2.4 \micron). We detect extended ionized emission on scales ranging from 1-30 kpc photoionized by stars, shocks, and active galactic nuclei (AGN). Spatially resolved emission-line ratios indicate that our systems reside off the star formation and AGN-mixing sequence on the Baldwin, Phillips $\&$ Terlevich (BPT) diagram at low redshift. The dominant cause of the difference between line ratios of low redshift galaxies and our sample is due to lower gas-phase metallicities, which are 2-5$\times$ less compared to galaxies with AGN in the nearby Universe. Using gas velocity dispersion as a proxy to stellar velocity dispersion and dynamical mass measurement through inclined disk modeling we find that the quasar host galaxies are under-massive relative to their central supermassive black hole (SMBH) mass, with all systems residing off the local scaling ($M_{\bullet}-\sigma~$,$M_{\bullet}-M_{*}~$) relationship. These quasar host galaxies require substantial growth, up to an order of magnitude in stellar mass, to grow into present-day massive elliptical galaxies. Combining these results with part I of our sample paper (Vayner et al. 2021) we find evidence for winds capable of causing feedback before the AGN host galaxies land on the local scaling relation between black hole and galaxy stellar mass, and before the enrichment of the ISM to a level observed in local galaxies with AGN., Comment: 31 pages, 18 figures, 7 tables. We present a study of the HD 165054 astrometric calibration field that has been periodically observed with the Gemini Planet Imager. HD 165054 is a bright star within Baade's Window, a region of the galactic plane with relatively low extinction from interstellar dust. HD 165054 was selected as a calibrator target due to the high number density of stars within this region ($\sim 3$ stars per square arcsecond with $H<22$), necessary because of the small field-of-view of the Gemini Planet Imager. Using nine epochs spanning over five years, we have fit a standard five-parameter astrometric model to the astrometry of seven background stars within close proximity to HD 165054 (angular separation $< 2$ arcsec). We achieved a proper motion precision of $\sim 0.3$ mas/yr, and constrained the parallax of each star to be $\lesssim 1$ mas. Our measured proper motions and parallax limits are consistent with the background stars being a part of the galactic bulge. Using these measurements we find no evidence of any systematic trend of either the plate scale or the north angle offset of GPI between 2014 and 2019. We compared our model describing the motions of the seven background stars to observations of the same field in 2014 and 2018 obtained with Keck/NIRC2, an instrument with an excellent astrometric calibration. We find that predicted position of the background sources is consistent with that measured by NIRC2, within the uncertainties of the calibration of the two instruments. In the future, we will use this field as a standard astrometric calibrator for the upgrade of GPI and potentially for other high-contrast imagers., Comment: 25 pages, 12 figures

We present new observations of the planet beta Pictoris b from 2018 with GPI, the first GPI observations following conjunction. Based on these new measurements, we perform a joint orbit fit to the available relative astrometry from ground-based imaging, the Hipparcos Intermediate Astrometric Data (IAD), and the Gaia DR2 position, and demonstrate how to incorporate the IAD into direct imaging orbit fits. We find a mass consistent with predictions of hot-start evolutionary models and previous works following similar methods, though with larger uncertainties: 12.8 [+5.3, -3.2] M_Jup. Our eccentricity determination of 0.12 [+0.04, -0.03] disfavors circular orbits. We consider orbit fits to several different imaging datasets, and find generally similar posteriors on the mass for each combination of imaging data. Our analysis underscores the importance of performing joint fits to the absolute and relative astrometry simultaneously, given the strong covariance between orbital elements. Time of conjunction is well constrained within 2.8 days of 2017 September 13, with the star behind the planet's Hill sphere between 2017 April 11 and 2018 February 16 (+/- 18 days). Following the recent radial velocity detection of a second planet in the system, beta Pic c, we perform additional two-planet fits combining relative astrometry, absolute astrometry, and stellar radial velocities. These joint fits find a significantly smaller mass for the imaged planet beta Pic b, of 8.0 +/- 2.6 M_Jup, in a somewhat more circular orbit. We expect future ground-based observations to further constrain the visual orbit and mass of the planet in advance of the release of Gaia DR4., Comment: 29 Pages, 23 Figures. Accepted to AJ

We present the first spatially resolved scattered-light images of four debris disks around members of the Scorpius-Centaurus (Sco-Cen) OB Association with high-contrast imaging and polarimetry using the Gemini Planet Imager (GPI). All four disks are resolved for the first time in polarized light and one disk is also detected in total intensity. The three disks imaged around HD 111161, HD 143675, and HD 145560 are symmetric in both morphology and brightness distribution. The three systems span a range of inclinations and radial extents. The disk imaged around HD 98363 shows indications of asymmetries in morphology and brightness distribution, with some structural similarities to the HD 106906 planet-disk system. Uniquely, HD 98363 has a wide co-moving stellar companion Wray 15-788 with a recently resolved disk with very different morphological properties. HD 98363 A/B is the first binary debris disk system with two spatially resolved disks. All four targets have been observed with ALMA, and their continuum fluxes range from one non-detection to one of the brightest disks in the region. With the new results, a total of 15 A/F-stars in Sco-Cen have resolved scattered light debris disks, and approximately half of these systems exhibit some form of asymmetry. Combining the GPI disk structure results with information from the literature on millimeter fluxes and imaged planets reveals a diversity of disk properties in this young population. The $\sim500$\, Myr A2IV star HR 1645 has one of the most significant low-amplitude accelerations of nearby early-type stars measured from a comparison of the {\it Hipparcos} and {\it Gaia} astrometric catalogues. This signal is consistent with either a stellar companion with a moderate mass ratio ($q\sim0.5$) on a short period ($P<1$\,yr), or a substellar companion at a separation wide enough to be resolved with ground-based high contrast imaging instruments; long-period equal mass ratio stellar companions that are also consistent with the measured acceleration are excluded with previous imaging observations. The small but significant amplitude of the acceleration made HR 1645 a promising candidate for targeted searches for brown dwarf and planetary-mass companions around nearby, young stars. In this paper we explore the origin of the astrometric acceleration by modelling the signal induced by a wide-orbit M8 companion discovered with the Gemini Planet Imager, as well as the effects of an inner short-period spectroscopic companion discovered a century ago but not since followed-up. We present the first constraints on the orbit of the inner companion, and demonstrate that it is a plausible cause of the astrometric acceleration. This result demonstrates the importance of vetting of targets with measured astrometric acceleration for short-period stellar companions prior to conducting targeted direct imaging surveys for wide-orbit substellar companions., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures. We present a revision to the visual orbit of the young, directly-imaged exoplanet 51 Eridani b using four years of observations with the Gemini Planet Imager. The relative astrometry is consistent with an eccentric ($e=0.53_{-0.13}^{+0.09}$) orbit at an intermediate inclination ($i=136_{-11}^{+10}$\,deg), although circular orbits cannot be excluded due to the complex shape of the multidimensional posterior distribution. We find a semi-major axis of $11.1_{-1.3}^{+4.2}$\,au and a period of $28.1_{-4.9}^{+17.2}$\,yr, assuming a mass of 1.75\,M$_{\odot}$ for the host star. We find consistent values with a recent analysis of VLT/SPHERE data covering a similar baseline. We investigated the potential of using absolute astrometry of the host star to obtain a dynamical mass constraint for the planet. The astrometric acceleration of 51~Eri derived from a comparison of the {\it Hipparcos} and {\it Gaia} catalogues was found to be inconsistent at the 2--3$\sigma$ level with the predicted reflex motion induced by the orbiting planet. Potential sources of this inconsistency include a combination of random and systematic errors between the two astrometric catalogs or the signature of an additional companion within the system interior to current detection limits. We also explored the potential of using {\it Gaia} astrometry alone for a dynamical mass measurement of the planet by simulating {\it Gaia} measurements of the motion of the photocenter of the system over the course of the extended eight-year mission. We find that such a measurement is only possible ($>98$\% probability) given the most optimistic predictions for the {\it Gaia} scan astrometric uncertainties for bright stars, and a high mass for the planet ($\gtrsim3.6$\,M$_{\rm Jup}$)., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures. We present a revision to the astrometric calibration of the Gemini Planet Imager (GPI), an instrument designed to achieve the high contrast at small angular separations necessary to image substellar and planetary-mass companions around nearby, young stars. We identified several issues with the GPI Data Reduction Pipeline (DRP) that significantly affected the determination of angle of north in reduced GPI images. As well as introducing a small error in position angle measurements for targets observed at small zenith distances, this error led to a significant error in the previous astrometric calibration that has affected all subsequent astrometric measurements. We present a detailed description of these issues, and how they were corrected. We reduced GPI observations of calibration binaries taken periodically since the instrument was commissioned in 2014 using an updated version of the DRP. These measurements were compared to observations obtained with the NIRC2 instrument on Keck II, an instrument with an excellent astrometric calibration, allowing us to derive an updated plate scale and north offset angle for GPI. We have obtained Hubble Space Telescope STIS and NICMOS, and Gemini/GPI scattered light images of the HD 191089 debris disk. We identify two spatial components: a ring resembling Kuiper Belt in radial extent (FWHM: ${\sim}$25 au, centered at ${\sim}$46 au), and a halo extending to ${\sim}$640 au. We find that the halo is significantly bluer than the ring, consistent with the scenario that the ring serves as the "birth ring" for the smaller dust in the halo. We measure the scattering phase functions in the 30{\deg}-150{\deg} scattering angle range and find the halo dust is both more forward- and backward-scattering than the ring dust. We measure a surface density power law index of -0.68${\pm}$0.04 for the halo, which indicates the slow-down of the radial outward motion of the dust. Using radiative transfer modeling, we attempt to simultaneously reproduce the (visible) total and (near-infrared) polarized intensity images of the birth ring. Our modeling leads to mutually inconsistent results, indicating that more complex models, such as the inclusion of more realistic aggregate particles, are needed., Comment: 29 pages, 18 figures, ApJ accepted

The Gemini Planet Imager (GPI) contains a 10-hole non-redundant mask (NRM), enabling interferometric resolution in complement to its coronagraphic capabilities. The NRM operates both in spectroscopic (integral field spectrograph, henceforth IFS) and polarimetric configurations. NRM observations were taken between 2013 and 2016 to characterize its performance. Most observations were taken in spectroscopic mode with the goal of obtaining precise astrometry and spectroscopy of faint companions to bright stars. We find a clear correlation between residual wavefront error measured by the AO system and the contrast sensitivity by comparing phase errors in observations of the same source, taken on different dates. We find a typical 5-$\sigma$ contrast sensitivity of $2-3~\times~10^{-3}$ at $\sim\lambda/D$. We explore the accuracy of spectral extraction of secondary components of binary systems by recovering the signal from a simulated source injected into several datasets. We outline data reduction procedures unique to GPI's IFS and describe a newly public data pipeline used for the presented analyses. We demonstrate recovery of astrometry and spectroscopy of two known companions to HR 2690 and HD 142527. NRM+polarimetry observations achieve differential visibility precision of $\sigma\sim0.4\%$ in the best case. We discuss its limitations on Gemini-S/GPI for resolving inner regions of protoplanetary disks and prospects for future upgrades. We present a statistical analysis of the first 300 stars observed by the Gemini Planet Imager Exoplanet Survey (GPIES). This subsample includes six detected planets and three brown dwarfs; from these detections and our contrast curves we infer the underlying distributions of substellar companions with respect to their mass, semi-major axis, and host stellar mass. We uncover a strong correlation between planet occurrence rate and host star mass, with stars M $>$ 1.5 $M_\odot$ more likely to host planets with masses between 2-13 M$_{\rm Jup}$ and semi-major axes of 3-100 au at 99.92% confidence. We fit a double power-law model in planet mass (m) and semi-major axis (a) for planet populations around high-mass stars (M $>$ 1.5M$_\odot$) of the form $\frac{d^2 N}{dm da} \propto m^\alpha a^\beta$, finding $\alpha$ = -2.4 $\pm$ 0.8 and $\beta$ = -2.0 $\pm$ 0.5, and an integrated occurrence rate of $9^{+5}_{-4}$% between 5-13 M$_{\rm Jup}$ and 10-100 au. A significantly lower occurrence rate is obtained for brown dwarfs around all stars, with 0.8$^{+0.8}_{-0.5}$% of stars hosting a brown dwarf companion between 13-80 M$_{\rm Jup}$ and 10-100 au. Brown dwarfs also appear to be distributed differently in mass and semi-major axis compared to giant planets; whereas giant planets follow a bottom-heavy mass distribution and favor smaller semi-major axes, brown dwarfs exhibit just the opposite behaviors. Comparing to studies of short-period giant planets from the RV method, our results are consistent with a peak in occurrence of giant planets between ~1-10 au. We discuss how these trends, including the preference of giant planets for high-mass host stars, point to formation of giant planets by core/pebble accretion, and formation of brown dwarfs by gravitational instability., Comment: 52 pages, 18 figures.
